Cry Freedom (1987). South African journalist Donald Woods is forced to flee the country after attempting to investigate the death in custody of his friend, the Black anti-Apartheid activist Steve Biko.
The strength of this film really hinges on Denzel Washington's charisma, and you feel that when the story deviates from him in its (long) second half. Kevin Kline is a good actor, but as the movie pulls further and further away from its own politics and purpose and becomes what's effectively an escape film, you really feel the disconnect between its two halves. A shame, because it has its moments and the chapter of history it seeks to explore is one not so often told. 5/10.

Born To Kill COMPLETE SERIES 2005-2016
“Going back to the age-old Nature vs Nurture debate, a good way to think about it is that genetics provide an individual with a spectrum and the individual’s environment, developmental and otherwise, determines where you lie on it. A predisposition may lie dormant for eternity, but feed it a stressful environment and increased risk factors such as malnourishment and trauma, and it will manifest. Clinical facts must be tempered with ethical concerns when applying science to society.” Source

John Wick was in the house yesterday. He brought his Briley 3 gun comp shotgun with him. Probably one of the nicest Benelli M2’s we have ever seen. Carbon fiber extended mag tube, trigger work, skeletonized handguard. Check Briley Shotguns out they are probably the premier 3 gun outfits around. John Wesley Donaldson, 32, is in custody for today’s stabbing murders of his mother and a sister-in-law, and the critical stabbing of another sister-in law.
Donaldson was taken into custody by Specialized Investigations Division undercover detectives at 3:35 p.m. after they saw him drive into a motel parking lot near the intersection of Charlotte Pike and White Bridge Road.
Investigation by Homicide Unit detectives shows that Donaldson knocked on the door of his mother’s apartment in the Highland on Briley complex, 2131 Elm Hill Pike at approximately 11 a.m. When his 9-year-old nephew opened the door, Donaldson entered enraged and attacked his mother, Jacqueline Pritchett, 56, with a knife. After fatally stabbing her, Donaldson began stabbing his sister-in-law, Genell Stewart-Tuggle, 29, as she attempted to shield the 9-year-old and Donaldson’s 7-year-old niece from harm. Stewart-Tuggle was critically injured and is being treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The children were unharmed.
Detectives are working to understand the motive. They were told that Donaldson was recently told to stay away from his mother’s apartment. Donaldson was convicted of domestic assault against a girlfriend, aggravated assault against a first responder, and aggravated burglary in 2019. He received two 4-year sentences. Donaldson was convicted of robbery in 2017 and received a 3-year sentence.
Donaldson was transported from the scene of his arrest to General Hospital for treatment of a hand laceration he apparently received during one of the attacks. Arrest warrants charging Donaldson with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder have been issued.(scoopnashville)

When producer and director Richard Attenborough's Gandhi finally achieved its UK release in 1983, it marked the end of a twenty year battle to make the film.
The idea was first presented to Attenborough by an Indian civil servant in the early 1960s, years before his first directorial project, Oh What A Lovely War.
Early on, two actors considered for the title role in Gandhi (believe it or not) were Alec Guinness and Albert Finney, both of whom declined, suggesting that Mohandas Gandhi should be played by someone with at least some south Asian heritage. (Interestingly, Alec Guinness was favoured by father and daughter Indian Prime Ministers, Pandit Nehru and Indira Gandhi, and went on to play Professor Godbole in David Lean's A Passage to India in 1984.)
The battle for funding continued for years, until eventually UK film company Goldcrest steamed in with the money and the project finally got off the ground. Attenborough was given total control over casting and the final edit, but was implored not to cast an unknown actor in the title role, with John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins in the frame as possible leads. It was Michael Attenborough (Richard's son) who spotted Ben Kingsley playing on stage with the RSC, and he was duly cast in spite of reservations, including from screenwriter John Briley.
During the filming, in which a record was set by the use of over 250 000 extras in a scene, a significant investor pulled out, and Goldcrest executives went on a desperate global search, only just managing to secure enough additional funding to complete the movie. For a while, there was a very real danger the project would collapse.
Gandhi went on to win eight Academy Awards: best picture, best actor, best director, best screenplay, best cinematography, best art direction, best costume and best editing.
Richard (Baron) Attenborough, a Life Peer since 1993, died in 2014, aged 90.
(Some background thanks to recollections of Michael Attenborough as told to BBC Radio Four's Film Programme)

unbleached cotton, a caution to the rest
But one morning after school had called and all seemed quiet, a shocking circumstance occurred. Betty Briley came in dressed in indigo-blue, with short skirt and nankeen pantalettes.       She made a great contrast between the back-wood girls in their long, scant skirts. The larger boys drew down their heads behind their slates and snickered; and Nat and Towhead put their heads close together and whispered, very low: but it broke the rules of the school. The teacher’s back was turned, too, but she heard all the same; and the way she jerked those little urchins off their seats into the middle of the room was a caution to the rest. She demanded an explanation of what they were saying; but they were so frightened that they could not have told if they would, and would not if they could.       For punishment she thrust them down on a seat between some little girls — and one was Better Briley. It seemed a terrible disgrace. A flogging with those hickory wisps would not have seemed half so bad. It proved to be one of those never-to-be-forgotten lessons learned in the first days of school.       The excitement soon died away, and it was not long before every girl in the country went into pantalettes. John Brown had many a puttering job dipping short lengths of unbleached cotton in his vats, after hides were taken out. Tan bark made durable nankeen color, and was thought to be cheaper.       The circuit preacher came around every four weeks to hold meeting in the new schoolhouse, instead of in the deacon’s barn, which seemed more sanctimonious. For his dedication sermon he took for his text; “And a little child shall lead them,” and Nat wondered if it could be that the teacher meant Betty Briley; but he noticed that he did not say anything about pantalettes.
ex Permelia Corey Thomson (whose name appears not on title page, but in prefatory note), her How the Coreys Went West : Fifty Years in Crossing the Continent (Press of Frye & Smith, San Diego, Cal., 1908) : 78-79 (78) : link (Harvard copy) same (but University of California; Bancroft Library copy) via hathitrust : link the latter bears presentation inscription : “For dear Miss Scripps in memory of Mother. / Estelle Thomson, Adelle Thomson / 1917.”
in chapter 24 “Bound for the Land of Sunshine,” Rufus Corey late in life takes his family out to “the bay region of San Diego county in Southern California, and they settled on a ranch in one of the valleys, in an adobe house shaded by a great pepper tree...” near the border with Mexico.
re: Estelle and Adelle Thomson, came across this letter to the editor of The Desert Magazine 2:12 (October 1939) :
Hollenbeck Home,                         Los Angeles, California Dear Mr. Henderson:       We had never seen a copy of “Desert Magazine” unti three weeks ago — then a friend found one of February 1939 in a wastepaper truck — and brought it to us. We polished it and found it a jewel.       In addition to being 93 and blind I have a broken bone and live in a wheelchair. My sister who is 84 takes care of me. She has not time to read . . . So we have five readers, who read such books as Longstreth’s “Laurentians,” all by Shackleton, “Land of Little Rain,” Mary Austin, etc. With our books we have traveled almost all civilized lands and some uncivilized. You may imagine how the “Desert” appealed to us.       We found one current “Desert” issue, August, visited nearly every second hand magazine shop in Los Angeles and finally were rewarded with December 1937, July ’38 and May ’39. For some we paid fifty cents a copy. They were worth it! But we exhausted the supply.       Fifty years ago I roamed over much of the wild land around San Diego and Tiajuana for Philadelphia “Times” and “Press.”       My sister retired after 30 years as head cashier at Hotel del Coronado, with the advent of automobiles, coached thousands of guests (El Centro bound) as to the “jump” of sidewinders. Estelle Thomson. by Adelle Thomson.

(The far more-detailed version is on FB; link in bio) “Tragedy In Alaska – Remembering the USS Worden” 80 Years Ago, Today: (Tue) Jan 12, 1943, Amchitka Island, the Aleutians, off Alaska: In June 1942, the Japanese invade Kiska and Attu Islands. It is the only invasion of American Soil during the war, and the first since the War of 1812. The US had to retake the islands as soon as possible, which is no easy feat as the Aleutians are 1000 miles long, and the Japanese were at the far end. And while a Japanese loss, it ties down 140,000 US troops, and resources badly needed elsewhere. This protracted 14-month fight at The Top Of The World was very bloody. In the middle is empty Amchitka – the US realized they could squeeze airstrips on it, so today’s landing in Constantine Harbor, is unopposed, but not without disaster. The harbor is filled with uncharted, submerged, razor-sharp rocks – one of which rips the hull of the veteran destroyer USS Worden (DD-352, Farragut-Class, Pics 1-4) Her engine room floods, killing power and leaving her dead in the water. A tow-line from another ship snaps; heavy winds drive her hard on the rocks. She begins to break apart in the waves. Photos 5-10 show her final moments. Her Commander orders the crew to abandon ship as huge, freezing waves wash him overboard. He was rescued, unconscious. Worden has a total crew of some 220 Officers and Sailors. Small boats from ships and the invasion help pluck them from ship and sea. It is so brutally cold their oil-soaked clothes are frozen solid. A head count reveals 14 men are dead. Three die after rescue, one body later washes up, and ten more are never found. They are: EM3c John A. Anderson, age 21 S1c Leland F. Bass, 25 EM3c Don A. Blue, 31 F1c Keith L. Briley, 22 RM3c Robert W. Keiser, 19 S1c Francis D. Musgrave, Jr. (Unknown) F1c William F. Reddeman, 22 F2c Leo L. Schultz (Unknown) S1c Stephen S. Seltz, 28 S1c Harvey J. Senne, 22 F2c Willard E. Shinabery, 19 F3c Jerome J. Wolshock, 20 WT1c Charles F. Wood, 24 S1c John H. Wright, 28 They are part of the list of 1,400 Americans who are killed in the Aleutian Campaign. Cortez Rice Biography                               Cortez Rice Wiki
A 16-year-old Morris boy has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder after shooting a Shorewood woman twice in the back of the head, Assistant District Attorney Russel Baker said.
Cortez Rice is accused of shooting Beverly A. Lambert, 25, of Shorewood on Thursday afternoon as she picked up her 22-month-old baby from kindergarten. Grundy County Coroner John Callahan said Lambert was taken to Morris Hospital and pronounced dead at 6:55 p.m. Baker said Rice was looking to go to Walmart on Thursday afternoon. He knocked on the door of a neighbor who threatened him with her bulldog to get him out of her house. Lambert came to pick up her son, left her car running to keep it cool and, as she walked to the door of the nursery, was shot twice in the back of the neck with a 9mm pistol, according to court testimony . . The babysitter locked herself with the children inside the house until the police arrived. At around 4:25 p.m. Thursday, Morris police were notified of a shooting in the 500 block of Twilight Drive, said Stan Knudson, Morris's public information officer. The Morris Police Department, along with surrounding law enforcement, were able to locate the suspect using license plate inspection cameras, Knudson said. Grundy County Sheriff Ken Briley advised people to take shelter near the 2400 block of Twilight Drive on Thursday afternoon due to reports of an active gunman, but the recommendation was rescinded around 7 p.m. . Rice escaped in Lambert's vehicle and, using flock camera technology, police were able to arrest him in Joliet, Grundy County District Attorney Jason Helland said. "Sheriff's Deputies located the suspect last night," said Will County Sheriff's Deputy Chief Dan Jungles. “He was driving the vehicle he stole from the victim. When the police attempted to arrest him at a traffic stop, he fled on foot. A short foot chase began and was later stopped.
"A firearm was found in the path he was walking in. The vehicle and the 16-year-old suspect were returned to Morris."
Rice, who is 16, will be tried as an adult and faces up to 40 years in prison. He is being held at the River Valley Detention Center in Joliet. His bail was set at $5 million. Sue Rezin, Vice President of the Illinois Senate, responded to the incident: "First of all, I would like to send my sincere condolences to the family and friends of the young woman who lost her life in yesterday's horrific crime. Unfortunately, although Morris is known to be a safe community, the crimes Violence has increased across the state and, sadly, we have seen violence spread to communities like Morris. "Fortunately, the people of our community are being served by brave men and women who responded quickly and professionally to yesterday's incident. However, it is imperative that we do more to assist law enforcement in the entire state to address the growing violence. We must provide them with all the necessary resources, including real consequences, to deter people from committing violent crimes." Read the full article
