Year-End Poll #11: 1960
Tumblr media
More information about this blog here
To quote a song from a certain John Waters adaptation, "Welcome to the 60's." And to mark the occasion, here's some songs from that decade of sex, drugs, and rock and roll! Woo!
So our modern perceptions of any given decade are rarely exhibited by the Billboard Hot 100 charts, especially when the decade is only just starting. I have my own thoughts on when the 60's truly comes into its own, but we'll get to that later. In the meantime, the top hits of 1960 wouldn't seem that out of place in the 1950s. Compositions, traditional pop, and doo-wop. Elvis is back on the charts after his time in the military.
However, there is one song featured in this poll that was truly a sign of where pop music was heading. If anyone can't figure out which one it is, don't worry. The same song will return in a future 1960s poll.

I figured I'd join on the Spotify Wrapped bandwagon. I like the older stuff--there's just something about that era. I don't know what, but I'm infatuated with the music, media, fashion, but moreso the music. Rock and roll/rockabilly and classic country are my favorite genres among others. Of this list, I'll briefly mention: Jim Reeves is my comfort artist, his music is a soothing balm, and that voice of his is just like warm honey. 💜 Sanford Clark on the other hand, I think is extremely underrated and 100% deserves a listen!!

November 6, 1954
Elvis performed at the Shreveport, LA Louisiana Hayride.
Scotty, Bill and Elvis are forced to cover other artists, since they only had 2 singles out of their own. So this night Fool Fool Fool, I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry and Sittin’ On The Top Of The World were sung in this show.
Since Elvis was still underage Vernon And Gladys had to sign for another contract running for one year. Elvis would get $18 per show and Scotty and Bill $12 each.
the other acts were Slim Whitman, Johnny Horton, Jim Reeves, Jimmy C Newman, J.E & Maxine Brown, Lump Lump Boys, Betty Amos, Jack Ford, Circle 6 Ranch Boys, Jeanette Hicks, Buddy Attaway, Hoot & Curley and Jerry & Dido Rowley.

Daar Doer In Die Bosveld – Nico Carstens
My Hartlief – Nico Carstens There are a number of version of this song out there, most have vocals attached to them, however, I have gone back to the original instrumental piece by Nico Carstens. I say the original but am open to correction on that. It appears on Carstens’ album ‘My Hartedief’ but I have not been able to find a year for that, so there may well have been others that went before.…

A Deck of Cards
This blog is based on nostalgia and facts, although it could not be verified who made the cards. However, the pictures in the blog are of real deck of cards which were made by one or more prisoners in Japanese captivity, it is not known where exactly though and who made them. They were stored in a box, which must have been used later to store the cards. The box originally contained American-made…

Two for Tuesday 8/9/2023 Jim Reeves and Faron Young  #twofortues
This his week’s Two for Tuesday songs are classic country songs. Four Walls by Jim Reeves and Hello Walls by Faron Young Both songs tell the story of a man who is alone at home with nothing but wishes and regrets for companionship, while his partner is either out on the town having a good time without him or has left him for someone else. They have a hopeless longing for what they can never have…

Not simply a tune...
I know that bloganuary is over, but I have every intention to finish the outstanding writing prompts that I missed out on. I fell into a mental funk which came unannounced and that caused some derailing on my part. However, I will not allow a depressive state to dictate my life. The need to rise above adversity keeps me going. So many songs and the poems that I wrote speak to me, but a song that…
