Types of dumplings in China

Prior to my arrival to China, I only knew about wonton and jiaozi, which I assumed to similar to pelmeni.

As it turned out, there is no end to the variations of dumplings, so here are some of the most common dumplings in China that I've come across so far!

饺子 - jiǎozi These are thin veggie or meat filled dumplings, and they can be steamed, boiled or fried but I've only tried the steamed variety so far which is pretty tasty. They somewhat resemble pelmeni, but the tast is noticeably different.

馄饨 - húntún (wonton) These dumplings are similar to jiǎozi but thinner and they're usually eaten in soup.

生煎包 - shēngjiānbāo These are slightly crispy, fried dumplings usually with a pork-filling。

锅贴 - guōtiē These dumplings are the crispy-ish type, deep-fried and steamed with various fillings like veggies and meat.

水饺 - shuǐjiǎo They're quite similar to the 锅贴, but these dumplings are boiled (note the 水) without the frying.

小笼包 - xiǎolóngbāo These are steamed buns, usually filled pork but they can also have other fillings like veggies and seafood.

Honourary mentions： These aren't dumplings, but they're adjacent enough imo.

肉包子 - ròubāozi These are biggish steamed buns with a meat filling. I have these for breakfast and they're really good.

菜包子 - càibāozi Same as the ròubāozi, but with veggies and also pretty tasty.

I find it somewhat funny how the vast majority of adaptations of Sun Wukong leave out that the Monkey King HAD A WIFE. a fucking wife that he KIDNAPPED AND FORCED TO BECOME HIS BRIDE.

She literally appears singing about this :'D before Nezha and his father rescue her.

and while I was learning about this, I couldn't help but think about the songs from Calypso, from Epic: the Musical (another recent hyperfixation) and in some way relate it to Monkey Kid.

after all, LMK's Wukong knows that the things he did when he was young were QUESTIONABLE to say the least (he literally said it) and that he regrets many things, and I wondered what his dynamic would have been like in that case with Jiaozi (his "wife ").

and that is precisely why I relate it to Love in Paradise in a certain way.

Like, we know that this Wukong definitely had good intentions, which were initially driven by good reasons, but which became more and more selfish, so here perhaps he could have brought Jiaozi to Flower Fruit Mountain as a direct response to 1- monkey logic + 2- after his trip to the west he needed a way to deal with loneliness and 3- demonic courtship is WILD.

Anyway, I can see this more (ONLY IN LMK) as a response to mourning and handling loss (the Brotherhood? Macaque? is up to your interpretation) and that he really doesn't know how to manage/communicate his emotions in a healthy way.

Imagine being Jiaozi, being taken from your comfortable princess life overnight, waking up in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE with a monkey man who is too... friendly to be a kidnapper?

Like, lmk's Wukong acts just like Calypso, with a lot of familiarity, his normal confident post-trip to the West self, explains the situation to Jiaozi (but in a much friendlier way than it really is) and she's like "uh HELL NO" but there really isn't much to do against the literal Monkey King, THE SAGE, THE EQUAL TO HEAVEN, and poor Jiaozi is having a full-blown crisis while Wukong doesn't understand why she's so distraught, don't she understand him? They have everything they want and need in the mountains!

Ironically other texts also described Wukong as a "spoiling husband who gave a lot of clothes/food/things to his wife" and that was probably the route he took after the beginning, Wukong has a lot of trash, but he was more than willing to share with Jiaozi as long as she was happy, that she wanted him back...love him Back.

He JUST doesn't understand the seriousness of the matter that KIDNAPPING YOUR SPOUSE REALLY IS...until Nezha and His Father come along.

Now, I don't think Wukong is stupid even before that happens, he would see Jiaozi's clear anguish, her sadness, the desire to return to her old life with her family, and although he consoles her and such, he is having a crisis, This is supposed to be normal, right? So why does he feel so bad when he sees her so distressed?

The glass fills slowly but surely.

I don't think he was a bad husband Per se, like I said, he was very pampering and such (maybe even Jiaozi sees him in a certain positive light, even if not as a husband, because of his good deeds of the past), but he had a big problem with taking things too lightly and not dealing adequately with his emotions.

so when he receives the ultimatum from Nezha and company, he has a very Im not Sorry for Loving You moment.

in which he does just that, he explains to Jiaozi that he let her go with Nezha, that he regrets having made her go through all this just out of selfish fear, and he very much regrets not regretting loving her even so (many years of being alone screwed him up a little head, so this type of interaction definitely marked his isolation even more in the future).

Even if in lmk Jiaozi doesn't keep track of him or anything like that, she makes it clear to him that she couldn't love him the way he wants her to love him. and it hurts, but it hurts good. because he learns from it.

(PS, it would be quite ironical if this Jiaozi marry Nezha of all people lol)

waaaaaaa I just love finding parallels between my hyperfixations, I will soon publish another one, but it will be much fluffier and from this same fandom.

I have so many random photos on my phone, on Chinese New Year Eve and during New Year. As continuation from previous post, for non Chinese who are not familiar with Chinese New Year event.

1. Eight Treasure Tea: Raisins, Red Dates, Roses, Winter Gourd, Longans, Peanuts, Wolfberries, Tea. Imported from China. 2. Dried plum sweets.  3. Dim Sum. In the center is the best fried pork I’ve ever tasted.  4. Pork Dumpling (Jiao zi) 5. Mala Fried Noodles with pork slice. Mala is seasoning made from Sichuan chili and incorporate 5 spices: Star Anise, Fennel Seeds, Sichuan Peppercorns, Whole Cloves, Cinnamon Stick.     6. Braised Bamboo Shots, Braised Pig Intestine, Herbal Chicken, Seaweed.  7. Chrysanthemum Tea. Herbal drink for health, since my childhood.  8. Yu Sheng. I do not celebrate New Year with Yu Sheng this year. Yu Sheng is fish salad, celebrated by ethnic Chinese in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia. The big portion is meant to be eaten together by several people with chopsticks.  9. Lion Dance. Performed by two people, jumping from one pole to another. By historically, there was a story of Emperor saved from nightmare by creature resembles lion dancing to chase away evil spirit in the Emperor’s dream. Afterwards, the Emperor declared the lion as the symbol of luck in China. The music is very loud, I warned you. 

And the last, of course, Ang Pao (Red Envelope) 

with money inside. Angpao is Hokkien Chinese language. Ang means red. Pao means envelope. Hong bao is the version in pinyin Mandarin Chinese language. 

The tradition of giving angpao by married couple to unmarried, even though the receiver is adult with stable income but unmarried, so yes, not for kids only. Unmarried adult with income is not allowed to give angpao. Giving angpao is meant to be showing care to others and sharing happiness to other people by giving fortune. Red colour is meant to chase away evil spirit and bringing luck in Chinese culture.

La esposa de Sun Wukong en El Viaje al Oeste y Lego Monkey Kid(TRADUCCION)

me parece algo divertido como la gran mayoria de adaptaciónes de Sun Wukong dejan de lado que el Rey mono TENIA UNA ESPOSA. una fucking esposa que el SECUESTRO Y OBLIGÓ A CONVERTIRSE EN SU NOVIA.

Literalmente ella aparece cantando sobre esto:'D antes de que Nezha y su padre la rescaten.

y mientras aprendia sobre esto, no pude evitar pensar en las canciones de Calypso, de Epic: the Musical(otra reciente hiperfijacion) y en cierta forma relacionarlo cok Monkey Kid.

después de todo, el Wukong de LMK sabe que las cosas que hizo de joven fueron QUESTIONABLES cuanto poco(literalmente lo dijo) y que se arrepiente de muchas cosas, y me preguntaba como hubiera sido su dinamica en ese caso con Jiaozi (su "esposa").

y justamente por eso lo relacióno con Love in Paradise en cierta forma.

tipo, sabemos que este Wukong definitivamente tenia buenas intenciones, que inicialmente eran impulsadas por buenas razones, pero que se fueron haciendo cada vez mas egoístas, por lo que aqui talvez podria haber traido a Jiaozi a la Montaña del Fruto Floral como una respuesta directa a 1- logica de mono + 2- después de su viaje al oeste necesitaba una forma de lidiar con la soledad y 3- el cortejo demoniaco es SALVAJE.

de cualquier manera, puedo ver esto mas(SOLO EN LMK) como una respuesta al luto y manejo de la perdida(¿la hermandad?¿Macaque? queda a tu interpretación) y que realmente no sabe manejar/comunicar sus emociones de manera saludable.

imagínate ser Jiaozi, que te saquen de tu acomodada vida de princesa de la noche a la mañana, despertar en MEDIO DE LA NADA con un hombre mono que es demasiado... amigable para ser un secuestrador?

tipo, Wukong de lmk actua tal cual como Calypso, con mucha familiaridad, su yo confiado normal post-viaje al Oeste, le explica la situación a Jiaozi (pero de forma mucho mas amigable de lo que realmente es) y ella esta como "uh NO" pero realmente no hay mucho que hacer contra el literal Rey mono, EL SABIO, el IGUAL A LOS CIELOS, y la pobre Jiaozi esta teniendo una crisis en toda regla mientras Wukong no entiende porque esta tan angustiada ¿no le entiendio?¡tienen todo lo que quieran y necesitan en la montaña!

irónicamente otros textos también describian a Wukong como un "marido consentidor que le regalaba muchas prendas/comida/cosas a su esposa" y probablemente esa era la ruta que tomo después del inicio, Wukong tiene mucha basura, pero estaba mas que dispuesto a compartir con Jiaozi con tal de que ella estuviera feliz, que le quisiera devuelta...

SIMPLEMENTE no entiende la gravedad del asunto...

ahora, no creo que Wukong sea estúpido incluso antes de que eso pase, veria la clara angustia de Jiaozi, su tristeza, las ganas de regresar a su vieja vida con su familia, y si bien el la consuela y tal, esta teniendo una crisis, se supone que esto es normal ¿no? ¿entonces porque se siente tan mal cuando la ve tan angustiada?

el vaso se va llenando lentamente pero seguramente.

no creo que el fuera un mal espos Per se, como dije, era muy mimador y tal(puede que incluso Jiaozi lo vea bajo cierta luz positiva, incluso si no como esposo, por sus hazañas), pero tenia un gran problema con tomarse las cosas muy a la ligera y no lidiar de forma adecuada con sus emociones.

por lo que cuando recive el ultimatum de Nezha y compania, tiene un momento muy Im not Sorry for Loving You.

en el que justamente hace eso, le explica a Jiaozi que la dejara irse con Nezha, que lamenta haberle hecho pasar por todo esto solo por un miedo egoista, y lamenta mucho no arrepentirse de quererla aun asi(muchos años estando solo le jodieron un poco la cabeza, por lo que este tipo de interacción definitivamente marco aun mas su aislamiento en el futuro).

incluso si en lmk Jiaozi no le guarda recores o algo por eo estilo, le deja en claro que no podria quererlo de la forma en la que el quiere que ella lo quiera. y duele, pero duele bien. porque aprende de eso.

waaaaaaa simplemente me encanta encontrar paralelismos ente mis hiperfijaciones, pronto públicare otra, pero sera mucho mas fluff y de este mismo fandom.

Steam-frying dumplings

Instructions:

Heat-up oil in a pan, just enough to cover all surfaces.

Place dumplings, flat side on the bottom.

After the bottom side turns light brown (1-2min), pour in cold water— enough to cover 1/3 of the dumplings. Immediately cover with the lid.

Uncover when the water evaporates completely, or after 8 minutes.

Cook another 30 to 60 seconds to crisp up if preferred.
