One of my favorite moments in all of TV history has to be the episode of Boston Legal when Jerry goes back to Crane Poole and Schmidt. He begs for his job back and he is talking to Shirley (or as he calls her “Shirl”) and he is talking about how the decision that he’s going to potentially be allowed to come back has put a song in his heart. Shirley asks him to hum a few bars and it’s the fucking start to the theme song and so we get to hear Jerry’s cover for the theme. Ugh, *muah*, it’s so good.

You’re not disabled, Jerry. You’re a very abled man who happens to have Asperser’s and a few eccentric ticks, but you’re intelligent. And you’re mainstream. And when it comes to finding a romantic partner? It’s simply wrong for you to reduce your playing field to people who suffer mental disorders…. You need to start setting your sights a little higher.
…. Love is the most inexplicable, unscientific, irrational of all phenomena. The only thing we know for sure is it can happen to anyone. It usually does. For you to be moping around with the idea it never will for you is simply unacceptable.
Katie Lloyd (Boston Legal 4x10 “Green Christmas”)
These precious cinnamon rolls needed some serious love. Think I might be their only fan and I don’t understand why. 😥 They even made it to actual cannon and everything.

I had another idea after finally seeing Defending Jacob & re-watching all of Boston Legal (forgot how good it is!)... What if after everything Andy went through he left the DA's office for a fresh start & a new life. He ends up at the prestigious Boston law firm of Crane, Poole, & Schmidt. How will he adjust to the eccentric world of Alan Shore, Jerry Espenson, Shirley Schmidt, & Denny Crane?
PS... Part 2 of my "Friends, Just Friends" (Stephen Strange x Y/N, Bucky Barnes x Y/N) story will be up this weekend! Yay!

boston legal!
bold of you to assume I remember all the names lol but I'll try
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most) → well that's easy: Alan Shore
scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped) → Tara Wilson, I'd die for her
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave) → I'm gonna cheat a little and say Ellenor Frutt from The Practice because I am bitter and sad that she never showed up on Boston Legal despite being one of my fav characters in the entire DEKCU (David E. Kelley cinematic universe) and having one of the most interesting dynamics with Alan Shore out of everyone
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week) → Jerry Espenson, can't wait to rewatch that whole friendship with Alan develop again
poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave) → I guess we gotta put Denny Crane here, right?
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason) → that judge that always says "jibber jabber" and the Ken doll Brad Chase
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell) → the cowboy lawyer guy who always calls Alan a hoot

Some of my favourite TV show characters (cuz I’m bored)
This post talks about and may include spoilers from the following TV shows:
House MD
Person of Interest
Castle
Boston Legal
The Good Doctor
Hustle (BBC)
Tumblr media
Gregory House (House MD)
House is incredibly smart and witty. Though he pretends not to care, deep down he does - he just shows it in unique ways. Unfortunately his logical approach to life has negative consequences, such as concluding that he is better off alone. Thankfully by the end of the show, he realises that he has Wilson. He is someone who is incredibly important to him and he would willingly throw his life away for him.
Tumblr media
James Wilson (House MD)
My favourite House MD character. Wilson seems like a very normal person on the outside - caring, empathetic, respectful - but you soon find out he is incredibly chaotic. He is also, for better or worse, fiercely loyal to House. He does whatever it takes to try and make House happy, even if that means showing tough love at times. But he’s always down to get involved in a bit of chaos, even if he denies this in the show for a while.
Tumblr media
Robert Chase (House MD)
Yeah, most of these are from House MD cuz it’s my favourite show. Also, I’m mostly referring to Chase post-divorce. I know that sounds grim, but before he is more of a target and tends to feel down because of it. But later on in the series, he stops caring about House’s taunting and actually embraces it - and it’s hilarious. Also he’s attractive but like shh.
Tumblr media
Harold Finch (Person of Interest)
Finch is smart and helps people just like House, but his efforts aren’t as easily seen or appreciated. A very private person, Finch uses his wealth and knowledge in order to help people who otherwise wouldn’t receive help. And what does he get out of it? Pretty much nothing other than contentment. He even acknowledges that his job will eventually end with him being killed, but he continues to save people anyway.
Tumblr media
Ryan & Esposito (Castle)
Honestly my favourite part of Castle. These two are incredibly chaotic and often have to be reigned in by Beckett. But even though they’re both wildly chaotic (especially when Castle encourages them), they’re also both very caring people. Not only do they care for Beckett and are loyally protective of her, but they also deeply care about one another (as seen in the episode where they get trapped in a building together). Sure, they argue sometimes, but they both (platonically) love each other greatly.
Tumblr media
Alan Shore (Boston Legal)
Another incredibly loyal friend (I’m sensing a pattern), Alan would go to the ends of the earth for his friends (literally) and also gets very defensive when something happens to those he cares about. Of course, he often says the wrong things because he is a very “ends justify the means” sort of guy, but deep down he loves his friends, especially Denny.
Tumblr media
Katie Lloyd & Jerry Espenson (Boston Legal)
A very wholesome duo. Jerry is someone who struggles with autism and also possibly Tourette’s syndrome, but Katie is one of the only people in his life to not consider him different for it. She encourages Jerry, supports him and even mimics his tics in order to draw attention away from him. Even when they were in a platonic relationship, they deeply loved each other as friends, caring about when the other was hurt. Just…a very wholesome duo. I love wholesome duos almost as much as chaotic ones.
Tumblr media
Shaun Murphy (The Good Doctor)
Admittedly I haven’t finished The Good Doctor. Actually I’m not very far into it at all and I keep forgetting to continue watching it, but Shaun is just a very relatable character for me. He values honesty and finding the correct answer, but often people underestimate him. He struggles a lot but still does his best to overcome his stresses and do the best he can do. Since I haven’t watched much of the show, I don’t really have much else to comment about him sadly.
Tumblr media
Danny Blue (Hustle BBC)
Yeah, this show is virtually unknown, but I don’t watch many TV shows. Danny Blue is confidence in himself and often feels undervalued by his team, but he is secretly very intuitive when it comes to his, uhh, “job” as a conman. Sure, he acts like a giant child most times, but he is loyal and smart. He just doesn’t always come across that way. I just find him entertaining, okay?
xxx
Anyways, I don’t really watch many TV shows…so this is about all I got. Oops-

red shirt wielding a red swingline
That sang to my soul.
And sweet Harper! I like her a lot, and I hope she haunts Our Heroes all season. [She and Rowena could be such friends - though I see that path ending in a “...but Debbie! Pastels?” place.] I was getting a real strong Buffy vibe off of her. The actress was looking and sounding like a shadow cast by Sarah Michelle Gellar and the whole scenario might have been written by Jane Espenson.
Dick’s Red Rooster, decorated with all those cocks, though, that’s 100% SPN. Dean made such a point of affirming his orientation with that slice o’ pie before they could leave. And Jack was all, “what? why? I don’t understand why you need me to affirm your dessert posturing through imitation, I’m two.”
Has anyone gotten a chance to ask Jerry Wanek about all the sidewalk statuary that’s been popping up in the cold opens over the past few years? Like, did they hire an in-house bronzer or something?

One of my favorite quotes, albeit from a TV show, about freedom of religion in America via /r/atheism
Submitted August 21, 2021 at 06:15AM by pushyplateau (Via reddit https://ift.tt/3syl7MS) One of my favorite quotes, albeit from a TV show, about freedom of religion in America
So this quote is from a scene in a show called Boston Legal, starring James Spader (Blacklist, Ultron) and William Shatner (Star Trek). The scene in question is about a case surrounding a Scientologist in which a former law partner of Spader's character fires a new attorney from the firm because he finds out he's a Scientologist. Here's what Alan Shore (Spader) had to say:
I'm getting a little tired of this Freedom of Religion thing. When did religion get such a good name anyway? Be it the Crusades, the Reformation, genocides, the troubles in Northern Ireland, the Middle East, mass slaughters supposedly in the name of Allah and then of course the obligatory reciprocal retributions. Hundreds of millions of people have died in religious conflicts! Hitler did his business in the name of his Creator, 9/11 was an act of religious extremism, it's our greatest threat today, Holy Jihad. If we're not ready to strip religion of its sacred cow-status, how about we at least scale back a LITTLE on the Constitutional dogma exalting it as all get-out?
Your client was fired because he entered into an at-will employment contract. He acted like a complete loon, and he now tries to cloak himself in a constitutional amendment that is as overplayed as it is misapplied! Everybody should get to believe in God. Pray to his God, worship his God, of course. But to impose him on others, to victimize others in His name, the Founding Fathers of THIS country set out to prevent persecution, not to license it! And for Jerry Espenson [Shore's partner] struggling with his law practice to make ends meet, don't tell me he's not victimized when one of his lawyers bounces around telling clients and other attorneys that, according to his most recent electro-psychometer reading, he's getting closer to immortality, at which point he'll be able to leave his body and talk to zebras!
At a certain point, we have to say ENOUGH with this freedom of religion crap! Yuck!

CW: transphobia
Season three of Boston Legal continues to disappoint. At the moment, my issue is with Clarence/Clarice.
In episode 2, the show introduces a loud, sassy character named Clarice. She's depicted as a crossdresser - a personality for the "base" character, Clarence, to express confidence and be more comfortable in his own skin.
Being Clarice explicitly gives this character a level of comfort and confidence that being Clarence does not. In fact, every time Clarence is shown outside of this persona, he's painfully shy and barely able to function in society. And yet, one of the characters in Boston Legal sees fit to discredit Clarice as an expression of Clarence, and forces him to fulfil the role of Clarence against his better wishes.
I see Clarice as transgender - the only time they appear to be comfortable in their own skin, it's as Clarice. While the intent of this character and plotline seems to be building someone up so they can stand on their own two feet, it very much feels like a trans character getting shoved back into the closet and being forced to perform their socially acceptable self.
Now, the character of Clarice/Clarence is already pretty problematic in how they were introduced. Clarice was introduced because she was fired from work for taking maternity leave. She's referred to multiple times as a man who's overstepping the boundaries of goodwill and good taste for the sake of this "Clarice" character and at the expense of her workplace, and the goal of the episode is to put Clarice to rest and have this character live as Clarence.
That's despite the liberation and comfort that Clarice affords this character and the severe shyness and doubt that holds the character back as Clarence. Not to mention - one of the conditions they list for taking Clarice back at the end of the episode is that she can't use the women's bathroom.
The reason I'm making this post is because the show is now doubling down on this. Clarence has reappeared - he applied at Crane, Poole and Schmidt as Clarice, and the same character who discredited that aspect of him says that she'll only hire Clarence - not Clarice. And now the fallout of Clarence's re-emergence is making itself known, because as Clarice he was a part of a woman-only gym.
I'm watching an episode where Clarice is revealed to have been a part of a woman-only gym for seven years - a gym where the clientele understood that Clarice was AMAB, but accepted her anyway. And because these recent circumstances have resulted in Clarice living as Clarence, they've terminated his membership because it's a woman-only gym.
Clarence is understandably upset about this, and he goes to his boss (who's the one pushing for Clarence to stay as Clarence, not to be Clarice). And as his lawyer, this character is now suing the woman-only gym for gender discrimination.
So, we have:
A gym exclusively for women who accepted an AMAB person who identified as a woman
A person pushing for that AMAB person to cease their "performance" of a woman, to the point of telling them multiple times to take off the wig and speak to them as a man
That coerced decision alienating the support structure of that AMAB character and leading to negative consequences for them
The person who's pushing for this masculine presentation "helping" this character by taking the alienated support structure to court over discrimination
This stands out so much because by punishing a group for letting a female-presenting person into the group and not serving them when they're presenting as male, it's likely setting up the message that they shouldn't have accepted a man into their group for presenting as a woman.
It opens the door for a "male intruder" mindset.
Which, in relation to trans people, is really fucking gross.
I know that Clarence is a mainstay from this point on, and I'll have to see how his character is presented. Jerry Espenson has been retconned ever since he first appeared - just recently, he revealed himself to be like a human polygraph machine, which is explicitly mentioned as being a new detail. As Clarence gets more development, I'll consider the character as a whole.
But I'm not pleased with how the show is treating this character. For all intents and purposes, they found liberation and acceptance in their community as Clarice. Now that the main cast is pushing them to live as Clarence and give Clarice up, to their great discomfort, the supportive community who accepted them as Clarice is showing cracks. Seeing that personality being suppressed and to see their support structure failing is an incredibly fucked up thing to witness.
And again - it feels so wrong after that season one episode with Jim O'Heir. That was an excellent episode of television, especially for the time. This Clarence/Clarice storyline feels like a giant step back in comparison. But again - I'll take the broader storyline into account.
