more golden sun tips
1. the game wants you to keep track of how many djinn a character has on standby when you're gearing up for a summon. you can lose spells mid battle bc you used enough djinn that your character went down a rank and that shit sucks.
ostensibly this is supposed to be a risk v reward thing to prevent you from spamming summons at every boss battle, but in practice this is really only a problem to worry about when you're doing optional stuff like crossbone isle and the endgame superbosses in TLA, and if your designated healer loses their good healing psynergy (eg jenna's basic class loses access to the party-wide aura healing psynergy if more than 4 djinn go to standby/recovery, so if she's your healer you NEED to keep track)
2. i do in fact recommend the optional stuff, especially in TLA because the best summons are locked behind those superbosses.
3. in TLA you're gonna find a bunch of shit like tear stones and sylph feathers that have "forgeable" in their item descriptions and the game does not tell you what this means. i will.
you give these to a character named sunshine in the town of yallam on oseania, after you get the boat. you give these to him one at a time, and he will turn them into weapons and armor for you. what you get is completely random, as several things can be forged from the same material, and it auto saves when you give him the item to prevent save scumming, at least in the original game. the switch has suspend points that you can use to save scum.
sunshine's wife says it'll take a while for him to finish, but leaving town and re-entering or spending a night at the inn will get it done instantly.
there are also several rusty weapons that will always give you the same result when you give them to him.
4. some djinn in both games can be found in the actual overworld map and encountered as monster spawns. the game does not tell you this explicitly. lucky for you, they have very specific areas of the map that they will spawn in. i highly recommend looking up guides with pictures.
5. make getting djinn your top priority, especially in the first game. not only do they give you stat boosts and increase the rank of your class, and not only do you get sick summons and effects from using them in battle, but to get the absolute best summon in TLA you NEED to transfer a save over from the first game with all 28 of those djinn, bc you need those 28 plus the 44 in TLA to even access the dungeon it's in.
6. the superboss guarding the best summon is the cheapest motherfucker on planet earth. he will use your djinn against you and tear you up like tissue paper
But! he is in theory beatable. he follows a set sequence of moves, only differing in very specific circumstances (skipping 'break' if you don't have stat buffs, 'haunt' if everyone is haunted, and using psynergy at all if he's been blocked). he will start the battle from somewhere in that sequence, and then go thru each action in turn
the wiki has an exceptionally good page on him including strategies to beat him and the complete sequence of moves he uses. use it.
7. use that wiki in general. it's the good one that isn't on fandom
8. if you open up the battle mode lobby in TLA and talk the NPC in the southwest corner while holding down either the L or R buttons (she's the one that says "i like my men macho"), instead of her usual dialog she'll say "you have a song request?" and a tiny menu will open up. congratulations! this is the game's sound test menu. if a track has played at least once on the file you used to enter the lobby, you can play it here! even more if it's one that has transfer info from the first game!
this has no use at all but this effectively turns your switch into an mp3 player that only plays golden sun music, and was the only way to listen to the soundtrack before yt and if you couldn't find a site that had ripped it and put it up for download

Which lesbo fart porn do you like? Is there any that you watch over again?
There's honestly so many, it's not even funny.
I like these two long Selena Loca compilations, one of which has her naked, playfully dancing around while farting constantly, and another that has her pants halfway down and omg you can see her cheeks rippling when she farts like in a cartoon (its really fucking good) and omg there's some of her farting in the bathtub and ripping long farts in her underwear/naked
Then there's a comp of Jenna Kitten farting in red, lacy underwear (lacy underwear, my beloved), and sometimes she pulls them down halfway (uuuggggghhhhhh!!!!!!) and FUCKING BLASTS THESE REALLY GOOD BASSY FARTS THROUGH HER FAT CHEEKS OMG holy shit its great
along with bassy farts, I also really like this one by Emma Ink where she's wearing a really short, white dress and she's ripping these really long, long, long farts through her naked cheeks, like dude, they're barely even 10 seconds apart and she'll rip one 30 second blast after another like she's just constantly churning gas.
Then there's this one where this woman (i think her name is Mandy) where she spreads her cheeks in front of the camera and keeps ripping small toots back to back and ends it with a loud, airy fart, and she's so playful and confident about it
Then there's LoveRachelle (HOOOOOOOO BOOOOOOOY!) NO MATTER WHAT VID IT IS, ITS GONNA MAKE ME CUM! Seriously she's gotta be my favorite, and sometimes she even farts so hard and long she sharts herself. Her gas is so loud and explosive. My fave one is her lying on her stomach and reading while farting, and the one with her ripping wet farts while sitting with just underwear.
Oh and Natasha F is really good cause all her farts are sbds (which are sooooo fucking hot) and she had one of her farting after eating chili dogs and omg her first fart is just a large, quiet gust of wind from her ass omfg you even see her asshole open up before releasing that
But that was just the solo stuff. lets get on to the girl on girl
there's one of these two women (i think one is just called Queen of Farts) and they're both wearing black tank tops and skin colored pantyhose while blasting these really gross, rank farts. THEY EVEN PUT THEIR ASSES TOGETHER AND FART! Those are SOOOOOOOOOOOO fucking good. I LOVE seeing that in fart porn. I've seen plenty of that stuff on twitter
Then there's two of this ssbbw sitting on the face of a skinny girl and totally dominating her with her gas. The farts are small, but the reactions she gets out of the skinny girl are really what gets me. I wish i remembered the names of the women though. i think one of them is names Kasey or Kelsey
There's also a lot of fart audios I like, but there's soooooooooooo many there, I'd rather not waste more time listing them all. Thanks for asking though

Ranking Echo routes based on how much of his project Chase actually gets done.
Jenna's route: I don't think there's a single scene where Chase does shit with his project, jack diddly squat. But tbf he was too busy looking for Carl, being tortured, exhuming decades old corpses, and the like to be worried about schoolwork.
TJ route: He does a tiny bit more work but spends way more time sabotaging his friendships and then committing murder to get much done.
Leo route: He spends three hours in the library looking up stuff and had a couple of scenes doing camerawork, but then Brian happened.
Carl route: Finds a bunch of historical records and research articles in Carl's house, does manage to do a report on Echo but only a year after the fact. Haunted house bullshit would do that to you.
Flynn route: Multiple scenes of Chase doing camerawork in different locations, extended scenes of him looking through town hall records. Boy was dedicated here.

Must be a slow news day, as Time Magazine just ran this little filler.
Jenna Coleman's Victoria comes in at the bottom of the list, "as chaste as it gets" - which is true. I remember when the show was first being promoted there was talk about this being sex-filled, TV-MA stuff - Jenna's equivalent of Billie Piper's Secret Diary of a Call Girl, which provided plenty of "thrills" for Rose Tyler fans. What we got was an excellent show, to be sure, but pretty much PG-rated except for a couple of small bodice-ripping scenes involving Margaret Clunie near the end and a skinny-dipping scene involving Tom Hughes that got blurred out by PBS to keep the TV-PG rating intact. I wouldn't call Victoria a kid's show, but I remember either Jenna or creator Daisy Goodwin going to an event where children cosplayed as the queen. You don't get that sort of thing with Fifty Shades of Windsor Castle. LOL

In the past few weeks I read “My Roommate is a Vampire” by Jenna Levine. Paranormal Romance. Published 2023.
This was a Christmas gift from my brother. It was fun and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It’s similar in a lot of ways to a book I read last year, “How to marry a millionaire vampire”, it’s got a lot of the qualities I liked about that book, and a lot of the same flaws.
This book is fun, silly, sexy, and it doesn’t take itself to seriously. The narrative was first person singular, from the female perspective. Fortunately the girl wasn’t annoying so i didn’t mind it. This book had a lot of non prose in it, stuff like letters, text conversations, emails and newspaper clippings being incorporated into the story. It was a choice I really liked and kept me reading.
I thought the vampire’s power set was cool, being unable to enter homes without express permission, casting glamours, and sometimes having other powers like flight and conjuring random fruit.
There were a lot of references to other vampire media, which were ok, and some references to social media, wich were sparse enough that they didn’t bother me.
My main isue with this book was the ending. The conflict was foreshadowed throughout the story, so it’s not like it came out of nowhere, but it appeared very fast, escalated quickly, and was quickly and easily resolved. I feel like it could have used an extra chapter or two, and had a more exciting conclusion. I feel like the author should have used the vampire hunters that were hinted at for the conclusion instead. A sequel was teased at the end, so perhaps that will be the conflict in the second book.
I liked this more or less the same as “How to marry a millionaire vampire” so it gets the same ranking.
7/10

Well I did watched all 13 series of modern who and here's what I have to say
I quiet liked this version of the show, but I maybe biased because this version of the show got me into the show. I do like that they improved the relationships between the Doctor and their companions. Murray Gold did a fantastic score of the show. I like that some companions help hold the Doctor accountable for the stuff they do. Personally I loved the idea of RTD making the Doctor last of the time lords and having him deal with the fact he was responsible, but I kinda of wished that part wasn't lead onto until later down the line. In fact kinda wished it was revealed in the 50th with the secret regeneration.
One grip is that there were too many tragic endings for the companions. I didn't like that the Daleks got less scary. Also a minor grip is that chibnall forgot the Cybermen already solve their death sutition with them adopting to people attacking then.
Now on to my Doctor rankings
7. 13th Doctor(Jodie Whittaker) 6. 11th Doctor (Matt Smith) 5. War Doctor(John Hurt) 4. 9th Doctor(Christopher Eccleston) 3. 10th Doctor(David Tennant) 2. Ruth Doctor(Jo Martin) 1. 12th Doctor(Peter Capaldi)
Tumblr media
Since compqnions play major roles of this version of the show. So here are my top 5 companions
5. Bill Potts(Pearl Mackie) 4. Graham O'Brian(Bradley Walsh) 3. River Song(Alex Kingston) 2. Wilfred Moffatt(Bernard Cribbins) 1. Clara Oswald(Jenna Coleman)
Tumblr media
Just gonna add a pic of Cribbins as a tribute
Tumblr media
Finally top 5 episode based on the incarnations (sorry to Ruth anf War, but they are only shown for a brief time)
5. Dalek 4. Village of the Angel's 3. Blink 2. Heaven Sent 1. Vincent and the Doctor

❔ will literally send this always
send ❔ and i’ll list a couple muses that i’d like to throw at yours! / always accepting
Brooke: logan. someone who is not into the glitz and glam lifestyle and is really caved in on herself... but also has some sam energy and i just think brooke taking her under her wing would be A Lot. Nima. I just got the enemies to lovers movie vibe of like Nima being this super hot chick at some elite party that brooke sees. don't ask. that was the au that popped into my head. the knife strap under her dress and everything. Stef. stef and lena watching out for brooke and continuing to check in on her after she goes to new york.
Allison: Cedric. i don't particularly care about him coming back to life but these purposes i think in a teen wolf setting him somehow coming back and them both dealing with that.. sure ! why not. theo burns. wait they would be so hot. theo gets turned at the end right and it goes against everything that he has ever known. he'd be so freaked out by allison being alive, too. them being hunters in similar types of indoctrination.. yea. Marian. she's died before and came back because people messed with time. I think they should bond.
Clary: okay but. Reina. Tristian. Gideon. They all Work?? idk if you have a tas verse for clary but i think they could all make sense. we can add in libby and bother holly for nico and have some sort of nyuma thing going on with clary. cedric. besties. i just know they'd be besties. Lydia. i need to rewatch sha/dowhunters. maybe a seelie. that tracks. maybe just merge lore. idk!
Alina: june. moving up the ranks of the first army. probably anti grisha originally bc well. her parents probably discovered one of the many secrets that led to them getting killed and grisha getting blamed. so then she was raised with those negative opinions and realizes hey that's fucked up. rich. probably doesn't realize how much struggle there is because she was raised way closer to the king. propaganda type stuff. sonya. i can see sonya and nina having very similar arcs. I think her being a healer instead of a heartender, but that same kind of corruption of your powers. lydia. lydia as a grisha who was experimented on also makes sense.
Alexis: thea. i don't know how they would meet but thea in s2 has some stuff that makes me think of alexis losing her wealth idk. serena. they grew up around each other / knowing each other. jenna. unclear how they would meet but I think they'd be neat.
Pam: sylvie. not liking the idea of people not liking them. they could go out to brunch. jacinda. maybe they meet because pam goes to her restaurant or something. friends! peyton. maybe she works as an intern there for a little bit while in school or s/t.
Mindy: serena. ivy league stuff. based off her wiki personality it seems like they would also get along great. jake. they can bond over watching a basketball game in a restaurant. this makes me laugh a little bc you told me her boyfriend is bryan at one point but i maintain. juliet. she was a fertility researcher so !! any of my grey's muses. i think that could be fun.

The Dominators
A pretty average serial, not bad but also not necessarily strong either; tbh I don't have much to say about the actual serial itself
Once again we've missed a lot due to missing episodes: the introduction of Lethbridge-Stewart, the first appearance of the sonic screwdriver, Victoria's departure and Zoe joining the cast. Thankfully there aren't too many more missing episodes
The sexism is really starting to show here, even more so than it did in the First Doctor's era imo. Yes, Susan, Vicki, and Dodo were largely damsels in distress but they all had some influence on the plot and were treated with respect to their autonomy. And Barbara was genuinely fantastic
With the Second Doctor we have: Polly, who was introduced as being a great people person but relegated to just making coffee for the men as they talked, and Victoria, who I don't think had a single impact on any plots she was in until her final episode where she's so good at screaming she defeats the sound-sensitive aliens
I have really high hopes that Zoe will be different; she's introduced as a mathematical genius from the future who can calculate complex equations in her head. And she did a lot of that in this serial, her first as a companion. She helped the Doctor figure out what powered the Dominator ship and, while the plot involving the council of elders or whatever kind of fizzled out, she was well-written in her scenes with them as well
That being said, I did notice that in her very first serial they changed her out of her cool space outfit and into a piece that showed as much thigh and chest as they could get away with in the 60s. Which makes me think about how recently all of the actresses cast to be companions have been classically Hollywood beautiful and have their appearance commented on by the characters often. Which then also makes me think about how later companions also have the reputation of being cast to be little more than eye candy
Which, to be honest, if they're written well I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing! Billie, Freema, Karen, and Jenna are all extremely beautiful women but their characters are also strong enough on their own merits and their story arc doesn't revolve around being "something for the dads" as has been said about previous companions.
I'm just hope that Zoe (and Wendy as an actress) get the treatment that modern companions got but I have plenty of reasons to doubt she will unfortunately. As it is now though, I'm enjoying her and Jamie and the Second Doctor quite a lot
Also, I forgot to rank last seasons episodes but there's only two so its an easy fix
The Enemy of the World. Cool idea with some really great twists, genuinely fantastic stuff
The Tomb of the Cybermen. A pulp science fiction story that I would have liked if it hadn't included all the negative elements of pulp as well

Be Mine Superstar / Emmerdale / Taikan Yoho
selections from my week in media [8-14 october 2023]
[anticipating]
Elseworlds (DC) - DC is bringing back the Elseworlds line next year, one of my favorite things ever.
System Collapse by Martha Wells - the newest Murderbot Diaries book (another full-length novel) comes out in November
[listening]
"Buppha" / Worawit Kiyapate
"On My Own" / The People's Thieves
"With UNIVERSE" / Pentagon
[loving]
Yoh finally learned to make good curry and we all cooed.
[reading]
The Mysteries by Bill Watterson and John Kascht - Watterson returns to publishing with a fable
They'll Talk About Us by finalizer - Red White and Royal Blue fluff
[watching]
Be Mine Superstar - Finished up the last four episodes just to get it off my list and was pleasantly surprised how good the ending was.
Beyond Evil - Rewatching because it's amazing and fits this time of year (Happiness is also on that list).
Emmerdale - Rewatched the beginning of Aaron and Robert's storyline in 2015. Robert really was the worst back then (did Aaron ever find out about the assassin Robert hired??). Aaron was so in love so fast and sick over it. My favorite tag, "the angst it is delicious" sums them up so well.
My Journey To You - Still slowly working my way through the last episodes and am currently paused on episode 19's fantastically horrifying revelation.
Ranking Every Adaption of The Thing / coldcrashpictures video essay - With a few exceptions, I can't deal with horror (I don't like being frightened and cannot handle a lot of jump scares or gory visuals). I'm a movie fan though, and there's a lot of really interesting stuff in the genre that I like to learn about. It's even better when the writer clearly loves the work they're discussing, like this essay. It's about an hour and well worth a watch/listen.
Taikan Yoho (My Personal Weatherman) - The last episode was everything I was hoping for. Communication, some sexy times, and more communication. Yoh and Segasaki are joining the ranks of couples that I wish we could see more of as their relationship develops and matures over time. I love them.
Bonus: a short list of books from my TBR if you're looking for something to read (Goodreads links provided)
Thornhedge by T Kingfisher - novella, horror, fairy tale
Starter Villain by John Scalzi - novella, first person pov, humor, cat on the cover
Forged By Magic by Jenna Wolfhart - novel, fantasy, cozy, romance
City of Bones by Martha Wells - novel, fantasy, sc-fi, dystopia
The Water Outlaws by S.L. Huang - tome, historical, fantasy, queer

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Theme Songs - Worst to Best
With the series winding down and only a few episodes to go, I wanted to look back at the shows four theme songs and share my thoughts. And given how there’s only four of them and lists are fun, let’s make it a worst to best list.
So enjoy...that!
4. You Do/You Don’t Want to be Crazy
youtube
I’m sorry to start this list on a downer, but from the moment I first heard this song, I hated it and that has not changed one bit since it initially aired. Musically and lyrically, it’s ugly, not having a central beat of its own and changing five times in the span of thirty seconds. The four personas relate to Rebecca’s feelings vaguely at best and are more a reflection of society’s views on craziness, giving it an unavoidable distance from Rebecca that the other theme songs just don’t have. it’s too short to really take form in the way the show wants it too. But most importantly, while every other theme song reflects the feelings of Rebecca consistently as they pertain to the entire season, this song only reflects Rebecca during the season’s first four episodes. Following that, Rebecca’s stance on craziness is simply that she doesn’t want to be crazy, but because she takes her diagnosis as “crazy,” it’s something she has to deal with. And any positiveness that comes from her diagnosis is not understood in the show in the same way as it’s understood by the two personas who are for craziness. I will say this though: The sets, costumes, and visuals are fantastic, selling the respective tones they’re going for flawlessly. I just wish they weren’t in this song because they’re so detailed and cool! They all deserve their own numbers!
3. Meet Rebecca!
youtube
Okay, now that that burst of negativity is out of the way, let’s get positive! I think the writers of this theme song really knew what they were doing here. Rebecca’s personality throughout not only the entire season, but in the series as a whole is infused in this song. The complexities of Rebecca’s character -- not just sweet, generous, snarky, sarcastic, but ultimately, like Rebecca herself, too hard to ultimately summarize with just a handful of words -- is both funny and makes for a good introduction to the character (Ultimately what a theme song hopes to accomplish). We see her insecurities as it shows how she’s compared to someone cooler and who seems to have her shit more together. And what I like the most about this theme song is its ending. Not only are other Rebecca’s lines hilarious and something that keeps the theme song fresh every time, but there’s something deeper to it as well. We see this ideal other Rebecca deconstructed from the ultimate cool girl ideal she is set up to be with every building episode while simultaneously through both the theme song and show proper making Rebecca a more complicated and nuance woman -- making her the actual “cool” one of the two. The costuming also shows this contrast -- Rebecca’s colors are a dark and brooding blue (Something normally classified as a cool color, showing a bit of subtlety for the changes that these women undergo as to their portrayals by the theme songs) while other Rebecca is wearing more of a conventionally cooler bright red dress) Finally, the music itself is great -- borrowing from sitcoms from the 80′s and 90′s. The use of horns as well as the introductory nature of the lyrics is a nice callback that completely works and paints the series as the more complex comedy that it is.
What are numbers 2 and 1? Go below the cut to find out because this is getting a lot longer than I expected!
2. I’m Just a Girl In Love
youtube
This is another theme song that I didn’t like upon first hearing it, but that’s more the fault of me loving the original theme song and being given no warning that it would be changed every season. And over the course of the season, it grew on me and by the end of the season, I was regularly singing it and even made a cute video of Trent’s equivalent to the song with my puppy! But anyways, let’s talk about the song itself. This season is very much a spiral for Rebecca’s character and this song perfectly incorporates the uncomfortable feeling both the audience and her friends have because of it. The music is a callback to the old classical musicals that Rebecca loved growing up and to basically one episode ago. Betty Boop always comes to my mind because of the uses of pink, black, and red all throughout the number as well as the 20′s dresses. The lyrics are perfect in that they are a list of how NOT to handle love and they retain this amazing level of absurdity throughout the song. Additionally, I love the focus on the backup dancers during the final few lines of the song, showing a level of disbelief and possible panic on their faces as they sing a song they know isn’t true. AND I like the foreshadowing that comes from Rebecca literally breaking Josh’s heart through her spiral. But the most important point for me is how the theme song was incorporated into the show. While in the first season, that incorporation was played as a joke, that could not be more turned on its head for the second season. Those lyrics are more than just ones she created to cement her love of Josh, but are callbacks to excuses Rebecca’s mother made for her after it was revealed that Rebecca was a former arsonist, the biggest twist of the show by far. The lyrics to an already disturbing, albeit bouncy song become downright horrifying with this revelation and something we enjoyed to a large extent now kind of makes us sick, but in a really good and complicated way! And it makes going back to this song equally complicated and therefore leaves the longer lasting impact.
1. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
youtube
...So throughout numbers 4-2, even when I had bad things to say about the songs, I still HAD more to say about them that was more than meets the eye (pardon the reference).
Buuuuuutt here’s the thing: I don’t really have that for the initial theme song, or at least, not as much as I did for the previous two theme songs mentioned.
So why’s it number 1?
I really tried to justify to myself to put “I’m Just a Girl In Love” as the top spot. It definitely would’ve made me seem smarter for the points made about the number as a whole and would make this list seem more objective than my current choice.
Ultimately though, I couldn’t. But still, let me explain myself, if you will for why I love it.
“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” (the song, not the show) is very much “what you see is what you get,” but what you see is pretty freakin’ great!
First, I love the visuals. I ADORE cartoons, the animation for the theme song is simplistic, but clean and fluid all the same. Greg, Josh, Daryl, Heather and Paula look cute in their cartoony designs. And hey! The visuals say a lot about Rebecca’s more simplistic viewpoint on the decision to uproot her life and move halfway across the country, so there’s a hot take for you! The cartoon visuals lack dimension, whereas Rebecca doesn’t, making her the only three-dimensional character in an otherwise two-dimensional world in her more subconscious opinion (I can’t see her consciously thinking that about her friends). It makes her journey to West Covina seem like more of a fairy tale or a sitcom than the big and somewhat consequential choice that it was and has the added bonus of deconstructing that lack of dimension throughout the season.
Second, I love the line “the situation’s a lot more nuanced than that.” I love the line so much that it’s my blog’s header! It’s all at once foreshadowing for the underlying deepness of Rebecca’s character pertaining to her past and insecurities, an excuse that she makes up for being confronted about a very simple yet gigantic life-altering decision made for awkward at best reasons, and a promise to the viewer that the series beyond just Rebecca herself is more nuanced than the title gives it credit for. Besides being a musical, I hear that people are drawn away from this series because of its title, and I think the writers of this song were deftly aware of that. So this singular line -- not sung -- is a plea for new viewers (Something this song can reasonably expect given that its in its first season) to give the show a chance to say more than it initially appears to. That’s honestly downright bold of a show to do and I admire that level of self-awareness on display!
Third and finally, I honestly just like the song. There’s a fun upbeat rhythm to it that I just love clapping along to. The lyrics are fast and get across the general idea of the series in an exciting way. It’s kind of like being on a short but sweet roller coaster. It starts out exciting with the buildup and drop (The story of how Rebecca got to West Covina) and then chugs along the rest of the track, but in a fun way (The lines about how Rebecca’s a crazy ex-girlfriend). it’s the song I sing along to the most and is nice to come back to as a seasoned viewer because -- hey, look how far we’ve come!
()()()()()()()()()()()
So that’s the list! What did you think? Let me know because I literally ALWAYS want to talk about this show and I can’t wait to see how it finishes out!
Anyway, nothing else to say but...BLAM!

Locus Araunah
Surprise! Jenna Moran visual art.
Tumblr media
hat tip to the “Ross Draws” and “Proko” youtube channels for essential guidance throughout the process of drawing this.
(Transcript and explanation:
TEXT BOX: IF you are visiting Argentina, do not travel to anywhere on the map marked as either Paris or “Locus Araunah.” Stolen imperfectly from the mortal world in 1954 by Araunah, Magister of the Dark, this city is magical and glorious but no longer congenial to human life. Its residents are principally dryads and elves---it being acceptable to the Dark for these inhuman fey to live---with a smattering of other faery folk. A small overclass/underclass of humans preside like Victorian nobility over the high society of the Chancel, but they’re born knowing that eventually they’ll have to kill themselves for their master’s pleasure, so they don’t take much joy in their social standing. Neither will you, should you travel there and be inducted into their ranks!
IMAGE: two figures at a landing on an outdoors spiral staircase. One has a jumble of flowers for a head and a garment corseted with vines. The other is a human woman. The human is wearing mourning veils, but from late enough in mourning that they’re behind the head rather than in front, and holding a handkerchief with a notable dark spot. She is looking out, past a break in the iron raliing, towards a lake or the sea.
EXPLANATION: In Nobilis 1st, "the Dark” was a divine faction with name and some details inspired by Susan Cooper’s “the Dark is Rising” series. Over the course of development, partly to differentiate them from fallen angels, they wound up taking on a specific association with human suicide. In third edition they picked up some redeeming features---becoming advocates for human agency in contexts outside of death as well, and switching from “humanity is a blight” to “we like these people, just, they’ve got to die”---but they still leaned pretty heavily into the original associations. Thus, Araunah, whose Chancel (pocket dimension) is meant to be pretty cool and magical and urban fantasy-like ... but also awful, and with some nasty industry/weapons manufacture/pollution-type elements mentioned outside the context of this box.
Starting with Glitch and continuing forward into the planned 4th edition I’ve dropped the Susan Cooper reference entirely; what was the Dark is now the Game, and what was the Light is now the Rule. ... but Xavid, who did the new layout for the 3rd edition when I was stalling out on it, wanted to keep to the old text whenever possible, and I felt like that wasn’t the kind of thing where I should overrule people, so ... the text is unchanged.
(3e to be re-released when: I have updated the last of the early-draft art stuff for the inside; when I have finished my comments on the current layout draft, which I’m doing as I update the art; and when the version that results after any changes based on those comments has been run past a few extra sets of eyes.)

TØP Weekly Update #142: A Formidable Album (5/21/21)
Tumblr media
So... how 'bout that album release week?
There's so much to cover; the release of nine new songs, the hype that's building for the World's Best Band to return to the stage, and (if we're able to come up for air) the massive speculation of what the future brings for our band.
I'm gonna get right into it, laying out my thoughts regarding this bold new album and covering all the most notable news from the week. I'll be sharing my (mostly) positive opinions about Scaled and Icy under the Read More line; I hope they're the start of a fun conversation with all of y'all who have stuck around through this last year.
Scaled and Icy Review
Tumblr media
First, my general thoughts on the album: It's good! Really good. Do I think it's a no-skip like Vessel or a cohesive piece of art like Trench? Absolutely not! But it's also not the potential misfire that I worried that we might be getting when I first heard "Saturday" (more on that later); I think all of the songs are at least good, and some of them are downright great tracks that hold up with anything else that our band has ever released. It is also indisputably very different, but I think that generally works pretty well. Many of the songs evoke '60s rock or Britpop sounds and structures that you can tell Tyler is still trying to navigate, but I think he does a very solid job at adapting them to suit his strengths- namely his lyricism and knack for melody- rather than change to suit them. Unfortunately, this does result in a bit of square-peg-in-round-hole syndrome at times; most of the rap verses on the album feel like they're here just to fulfill an obligation to fans who would be mad if they weren't here, and most of the songs that use them are the weakest ones in the project.
"Good Day" plays a major role in getting the rest of the album to work as well as it does. Its gradual ramp-up, introducing the sound that will be used throughout the rest of the album. Its playfulness belies its message about how one can project a somewhat false optimism for oneself in the midst of tragedy: the type of dark stuff in a bright package that Tyler is so so good at. It's perhaps not an instant classic, but I am excited to see how it comes across when it's eventually used as a show-opener. 9/10
I've of course already discussed "Shy Away"; an anthemic, inimitably catchy track that I just wish had a bit more going on under the hood. Still going to be so good to hear thousands of voices scream "An 'I LOVE YOU' that isn't words!" someday. 9.5/10
"Choker" definitely took a little bit to grow on me. I think part of that was a bit of disappointment from over-inflated expectations and the environment I was in when I first heard it. With further listens, I fall more and more in love with the melody of the song... well, most of it. Like the rest of this album, the biggest weakness in the song is when Tyler tries to tick the box of having a rap verse; it just feels really out of place, unfinished, and almost amateurish, and it doesn't end the song on the note that it really should. Without it, it'd be one of my favorites on the album; with it, "Choker" is a solid 8.5/10.
Speaking of unfinished-sounding songs really hurt by their rap verse: "The Outside". There's a definite something to the vibe of the song, but that seemingly nonsensical verse is one of the two weakest parts of the entire project for me. The way the song meanders only adds to the feeling that there wasn't as much energy and attention paid to it compared to other parts of the project. It's pretty easily my least favorite track on Scaled and Icy, and the only one I might regularly skip. I've also seen plenty of people saying it's the best song on the album, so please tell me why I'm wrong! 6.5/10
"Saturday", as mentioned above, had me really nervous about this album. Like "Choker", it's grown on me a bit since I first heard it, in part because it fits better with the context of the rest of the album. However, this one really does feel undercooked lyrically and overreliant on the novelty of using a disco-inspired sound that seems to chase trends more than almost any other TØP track. The inclusion of that very sweet audio clip from Jenna boosts the song in some ways, but also adds to the disappointment in others; there are many other songs on this project that would be more worth surrendering time watching Friends. Thankfully, those come next. 7/10
"Never Take It" is fascinating. I never thought I'd hear a Rolling Stones-style song from Tyler Joseph featuring a gd guitar solo of all things, and it actually sounds pretty great. However, I also predict that this song will see some of the greatest critical scrutiny out of all the songs on the album. The lyrics seem to be Tyler's criticism of the media for playing up division in our society, but he's extremely vague when discussing which entities are spreading said division and ultimately recommends that people "educate yourself, but never too much". I'll be honest: maybe it's the fact that it sounds like something my dad would listen to, but it feels like this would get tons of play on Fox News. Since it makes specific reference to the events of last summer, it's hard not to feel like song is at least partially inspired by Tyler's brush with cancellation last year. Maybe I'm reading too deeply into it, but those reservations come from the song's lack of specificity, which is an issue of songwriting more than politics. They hold me back from truly loving a song that still manages to be one of the most exciting the band has ever put out. 8.5/10
"Mulberry Street" seems like the perfect realization of the entire album's intended tone. It is so pleasant, so lush while also simply produced, full of great lyrics, metaphors, and imagery. It really brings the whole project together, even if it's missing That One Line to really move this up to the top tier of the canon. 9.5/10
"Formidable" is the best song on the album and one of two songs I would truly rank in the top tier of the band's canon. Extremely pleasant and brimming with well-crafted lines to make your heart swoon. Jenna (and Rosie) is (are) a lucky gal(s). Or is it about Josh? Who's to say? 10/10
"Bounce Man" is just plain wild. I think Tyler's smuggling someone to Mexico to escape the feds? The playfulness of it all really covers up any frustration I might have with the clarity; it makes it clear that there's not really stakes here, just vibes. 8.5/10
"No Chances" sees the album take a turn that I'm sure the Reddit Clique is going to have an absolute field day with; it and "Redecorate" both sound quite different from the rest of the album and evoke enough elements of Trench to make me think that's it's actually possible that all this 'SAI is Propaganda' stuff might actually have something to it... until I actually pick apart the lyrics, then I'm even more confused. The song has some of the best rapping on the album, though that's not saying much (the feng shui line is a groaner right out the gate) and the gentle pre-chorus is really pleasant. I still haven't made up my mind on whether the chorus is effective or just plain goofy. This one might get worse or better on repeat listens, impossible to say for now. 7.5/10
"Redecorate" rounds out the album by opening with a Clancy quote (Tyler, you bastard), firmly setting this as a coda to Trench more than the album we just listened to. The rest of the song is really storytelling, with Tyler describing a bunch of people who are struggling deeply. The idea of "redecorating" here stands for how they are faced with the option to clean and resort their own spaces and lives or leave that to their loved ones to do after they're gone. By the time it gets to the album's name drop, you begin to wonder how much of this is potential autobiographical of the last year. It's moving stuff, a callback to some of the great strengths of the band's discography. 10/10
If I average those scores all up, this project ranks below almost every album among the Pilots discography on my rating scale, very narrowly edging out Self-Titled. That's still a very solid 8.6. Scaled and Icy is a very good album on first listen. We'll see how I feel about it after having a little more time to sit with it, but I've rambled enough: let's move through the rest of the week's news.
Other News
Tumblr media
Of course, there was a lot else going on this week! To accompany the release of "Saturday", Zane Lowe over at Apple Music dropped an interview with Tyler. As usual, Zane did a pretty solid job of getting to the heart of the craft and the creation process. However, Tyler also wound up skirting a lot of the questions to just talk more about how much he loves being a dad, which makes me happy; if the cost of getting a little less attention and mental energy devoted to the music is that little girl getting all of his attention, that's honestly preferable for me.
The album rollout is not even close to over. Later today, the concert will be streamed live. It's our first real performance that we've gotten from the band since 2019, but the previews that we've seen have completely exceeded any of my expectations, and really anything that we've seen from the band. It appears that they've transformed the entire arena (which I think is the ol' Schott at Ohio State) into a whole TØP world, with different sets laden with Easter eggs and a cast of backup dancers. If the website can hold up to the traffic (and I acknowledge that might be a big ask), this could really live up to Tyler's promise of this being the best livestreamed concert ever.
Oh, and this guy dyed his hair pink.
What a time to be a fan. Catch you all tomorrow.
Power to the local dreamer.
