Rebel ship draft

Haven't posted in a while, I've missed the raw energy of tumblr!!! I've been super busy setting up the preproduction of Skyrealms which will go to production soon - but today I'm super excited to share with you this Rebel ship lost in the Outer Rim draft. Isn't it good?!!! The art is by Holly Jenka, she's an amazing artist and if you don't know her art I totally recommend to check it, especially if you dig Sci-Fi. So actually this is just the first bit of a bigger illustration, that will feature two ships.

Holly is making it for an upcoming bundle of tabletop RPG zines I'll be publishing with The Lost Bay Studio. I've been publishing a few bundles already, and this is going to be pretty much the most ambitious project I've worked on, we're talking about 20 zines/pamphlets by 10+ designers

As you can probably tell the art has a vintage touch, we're are taking inspiration from covers of 70s Sci-Fi books.

I don't want to spoil the bundle, but I'm super excited by all the art/content that is produced for it, so I'll try to share a few previews. Have a great weekend folks!!!

FusionFall Headcanons: Tech Drones

Needless to say, it came as a terrifying shock when fusion spawns took over these machines and they turned on the Earthlings working with them. Many underground tunnels were destroyed in an effort to keep the majority of drones from reaching more pivotal areas inside of Dexlabs. They still pose the biggest danger to the company, focused primarily on burrowing into Dexter’s old laboratory for secrets/equipment.

The series of insectoid machines were created by Dexter primarily for construction work. What with property damage being so common in the world of FusionFall, these machines could speed up the repairs to large cities. The Tech Drones were the first in this series and, being more ant-like, their focus was to carry heavy loads and assist in underground jobs like with sewers or the tunnels that connect Dexlabs with his original lab in Tech Square.  

In much rarer circumstances, the Tech Drones were sometimes used for rescues as well in the event of a building’s/tunnel’s collapse. This is due to the drones mimicking an ant’s behavior to “play Jenka” with dirt, in this case safely removing debris without touching anything load-bearing--decreasing the likelihood of a greater collapse.

Since they already had a strong, mobile body to work with, these fusion monsters aren’t as amalgamated as others. You can see fusion matter leaking from gaps and breaks in their bodies, but that’s about it: They’re not pieced together from scrap or random objects. Only in cases where they’ve revived multiple times from battle do you really see any heavy wear-and-tear and those more amalgamated aspects. Sadly, Dexter and his scientists did too good a job when making the drones, so taking them down can be a challenge...

This wear-and-tear, in one sense, actually caused the drones overall to regress by the time of the events of the Future--a big contrast to the typical evolution of fusion monsters. Production on them was cut short during the war, with Earthlings taking on more of the grunt work for repairs as they did in the past since Fuse’s army could just keep taking over heavy equipment. In short, they were running out of new bodies to work with. This is why we only see the Doom Drone in the Past, which had originally been an improved form of the Tech Drone. Described as “smarter, stronger, and meaner,” they were in much better condition; however, they gradually fell into disrepair/a weakened state. 

With a little work from Fuse’s army, it would be possible to create an even stronger version of the Tech Drone. Nevertheless, they never did. It was likely seen as more trouble than it was worth to rework the drones for combat specifically, since they still aren’t the strongest of his monsters, so Fuse’s intention was to let them gradually “die out” on their own.

An early danger they posed on the public was simply the fact that they carried the Dexlabs’ name. At the start of the war, civilians who saw them could easily mistake the Tech Drones for what they were before fusion spawns took them over, accidently putting themselves in harm’s way.     

Unlike real ants, the Tech Drones’ “mandibles” are really more for show, so they primarily attack with their forelegs in jabbing/piercing motions--typically rearing up to strike smaller opponents from above, as seen in concept art. While some can move in groups, thankfully, they also don’t exhibit as strong a swarming habit as real ants do either. If they do swarm in large numbers, it’s recommended that you get some distance as fast as possible. 

For however many Tech Drones may be on the surface, it’s possible to still find them underground, rummaging through abandoned sewers/tunnels and creating new ones in fusion lairs. This creation of new tunnels acts as a secondary role for them, channeling fusion matter through the earth at an increased rate.

Reading girl genius and *fond sigh* the Jaeger as a whole are a work of art. Also Higgs seems really interesting, mentally speaking, because I think he may be the only one to really remember and understand that the Jaeger were humans. Like yeah obviously the Jaeger themselves remember that they were humans at first but after all this time they're basically a different race. Same for the humans, I think not everyone knows that the jaegers were humans but those who do definitely don't... Get that they were The Same Kind Of Beings, once. But Higgs is reminded every day that Jaeger and humans share a, well, not exactly a common ancestry but uh do you see what I mean? And his understanding of what it means to be a humans and what it means to be a Jaeger must be very different from every human and Jaeger and I want to psychoanalyse the fuck out of him (sorry for the rant, but you're the only girl genius blog I follow hahaha)

this is really neat to read because, like, i headcanon higgs as juggling "very good at humaning because i'm faking it via observing them like a scientist in a feather suit" and "i am not jaeger enough!!! WHEN WILL MY HORNS COME IN [/dysphoria]". like in my head he's totally not seeing himself as human but he knows other people DO see him as human and he accepts it grimly because it's mission-essential and at least his brothers KNOW BETTER and accept him as the jaeger he is inside, but at the same time he yearns.

he's like a trans boy with D-cups. it's very ungood. :(

also he's oldish for a jaeger so his memories of being human are probably old and faded, for all that he's likely using them a lot as references.

so in my head he understands what it's like to be a human a LOT better than most jaegers, but the way an explorer understands a very strange mountain tribe. he doesn't truly feel like one of them more than in passing. playing cards and shooting the shit? yeah, but then the "repeal boarders" alarm rings and he notices he's all calm and happy and they're very much not and whoa dissonance.

i think two jaegers who understands humans very well would be jenka (undercover as a socialite XD) and mamma gkika, who has a bar with both human clients and employees. but gkika at least gets to play "no, i'm playing a jaeger lady role for the bar's theme, i'm not really a jaeger wink wink lol" whereas higgs and jenka have to totally immerse themselves into the roleplaying and the predicting.

.............. it would be all kinds of hilarious to write a teaming-up fic from an outside POV on some human who only knows them as the mysterious and friendly lady jenka and some random low-ranked airman but has to stay with them for foiling-a-plot purposes and keeps seeing them almost slip up. XDDD
