“Gretchen, stop trying to make Dean Winchester happen. It’s not going to happen.” OR: a list of characters that are ACTUALLY bisexual from pretty decent TV shows for all us salty sailors.

Criteria 4 this lyst: A) character is either THE main character or a primary character (secondary or a main in a larger ensemble cast). B) their bisexuality is confirmed in narrative. Or barring that, it isn’t just a wink and a nod/subtle suggestion, and is made fairly explicit. C) their bisexuality isn’t just a one off/dropped point/something that gets glossed over, and actually is significant to that character and/or future plot lines. and D) I, personally, both like the show and am ok with the portrayal of their bisexuality en narrative.

Some characters weren’t included on this list because I couldn’t force myself to get through the show or I really couldn’t be bothered to start watching all ten thousand seasons of it despite whatever A+ bi character debuts in season 10. And since this is supposed to be an actual rec list...

Waverly Earp - Wynonna Earp (surprisingly fun and funny show for the budget they’re working with)

Ethan Chandler - Penny Dreadful (yes he has sex with a dude. Yes that is absolute confirmation of bisexuality imo. But it’s just a throwaway thing in the story and other than that one scene has absolutely no bearing on anything else so. Eh.)

Jack Harkness + Ianto Jones + Toshiko Sato - Torchwood (is this “good television?” No. Is it still fun in a low budget and frequently obnoxious scifi kind of way? Sure. Did I watch most of it? Yes. Most of it.)

Honorable mentions:

James Flint + Anne Bonny + Max - Black Sails (debatable - they all p gay. The take home is that this is a very iconic and queer show and u should be watching it)

Villanelle - Killing Eve (debatable. She also p gay)

Will Graham - Hannibal (I like to think so but, debatable)

[1/2] Thanks to you I FINALLY began watching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and I'm just SO thankful for this show, especially for Darryl and "Getting Bi". To finally have a character not just saying they "don't like labels" or "are flexible", but really using the word "bisexual" is so refreshing (and in the same song destroying all those harmful prejudices against bi people, wow!). This is seriously the greatest bi-representation I've ever seen. I'm so happy that we get more and more openly bi characters

[2/2] …on TV and I think it’s great that it’s finally not only young bi women, but also positive representation for bi men (like James Flint on Black Sails, Magnus Bane on Shadowhunters, Jack Harkness & Ianto Jones on Doctor Who/Torchwood), but Darryl Whitefeather as a middle-aged bi guy really stands out for me (I love him and White Josh so much). Has anyone on the Fandomentals ever written about him (or generally the increasing better portrayal of bi people)?

No, we haven’t. Julia wrote about Paula, but I think we had been talking with someone who was going to do season reviews of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend so we were holding off on more stuff. I need to check on that... We’ve written plenty about Black Sails, too, but not this particular angle.

That said, this is definitely an angle I appreciate (I almost had some more angry bisexual yelling at an ask I received yesterday, but held off), especially given past portrayals where, like you said, there’s an allergy to the word, or it’s something like how Thirteen was for 99% of House’s run—she’d hook up with girls when she was spiraling, but her serious relationships would be with men. Luckily they gave her the right end-note there.

In general I want to write about Crazy Ex Girlfriend as a followup to my “missing Jewish women”, but there’s something to be said for the broader representation in that show, as surprising as it might be. “Gettin’ Bi” is brilliant, especially because it tackles every misconception (though it is a bit more into the gender dichotomy than I’d prefer). The only way I’ll ever allow myself to get married is if that provides the soundtrack.
