BLUE BEETLE (Minor Spoilers)
I was unsure if I wanted to see “Blue Beetle”. Is it one of the last of the old DCEU movies? Or, as suggested by recent articles, the first of the new DCU films under James Gunn and James Safran.
Well, the movie was green lit by Warner in 2021 to be part of mid-budget films to be released exclusively on HBO Max. But with the regime change… and lucky for it, with Safran as a producer, it got a theatrical release date.
As I’m not a fan of Warner/Gunn’s new direction for DC Comics movies, I hesitated. But because the Blue Beetle features the Jaime Reyes version of the character, Warner’s first Mexican superhero, I felt I should at least see it.
First, does this feel like an introduction to a new DC Universe? Flat out, No. The story is set in a fictional city in the Florida Keys, and except for very minor passing references to Batman, Superman, and the Flash, there is no sense of the outside world and the heroes that might inhabit it. So this movie is largely standalone and could exist in any of DC’s multiverses (included the Arrowverse).
What sets this movie apart from other superhero movies is its focus on “La familia”. We have Jaime, his sister, mom and dad, Uncle Rudy, and Nana the abuelita - and they all love each other very much.
This is both good and bad, because like the Shazam-Family in Zachary Levi’s films, Jaime is never on a solo mission. He has to share a lot of screen time and plot with his family.
As Superhero family go, this one is extraordinary… Tio Rudy (played by George Lopez) is a veritable tech genius (someone actually refers to him as Doc Brown). And Nana? She’s played by well known Mexican actress Adriana Barraza. Her character was once a “revolucionista” who can handle a machine gun twice her size. As I don’t recall any revolutions in Mexico in the past 50+ years, maybe in her youth grandma traveled to Nicaragua in the 1980s to fight with the Contras.
These additions are meant to be playful, but each needs a setup, and an arc and conclusion which make the movie less and less about Jaime.
Xolo Maridueña is charming as Jaime. His devotion to his family is his defining trait. Once the alien scarab takes over his body, he’s constantly trying to stop it from killing anybody. An odd juxtaposition because in Tio Rudy’s and Abuelita’s action scenes, they don’t hesitate killing (remember that machine gun?).
Susan Sarandon plays a generic corporate villain and offers nothing special. Her #1 henchman is played by Raoul Trujillo. He eventually becomes a red version of the Beetle (don’t you hate it when the villain becomes a copy of the hero). He and Jaime have many fight scenes (CGI versus CGI like in the Iron Man movies).
The ending gets bogged down in too many fight scenes:
Jaime’s sister versus generic henchmen
Tio Rudy versus generics henchmen
Abuelita versus generic henchmen
Jaime versus generic henchmen
Jaime versus Raoul Trujillo (twice at the end and at least 4 times across the movie).
In all, I thought “Blue Beetle” was just “okay”. Certainly better than “Quantumania” and “Thor L&T” but not has good as either WW movie or the recent Flash (which I enjoyed quite a bit).
NOTE:The plot references the Golden Age Blue Beetle (Dan Garrett) and the Silver Age version (Ted Kord) but neither appear. But we do get to see Kord’s airship, the Bug, in action.
Post Credit Scenes: Shortly after the credit start, there is a scene referencing Ted Kord. At the very end of the credits, there is another bit that is not worth waiting for (trust me!). And there are NO cameos by any other heroes or actors.
Best Line:
“My name is Sanchez, pendeja!”

The Case for Blue Beetle
A hero for the rest of us
Tumblr media
Jaime Reyes has a lot on his shoulders.
It’s an awkward place he’s been put in, by multiple factors. He stands amidst a rebooted universe, the vanguard in a world defined by the legacy of the big-name heroes that have come before him. Superman. Wonder Woman. Batman. The Flash. Aquaman. Cyborg. All of them have had their name in big marquee lights, and the first go at a cohesive DC film universe... failed. It’s not for lack of effort. Zack Snyder is as high effort as it gets. I really loved both Wonder Woman movies (YES EVEN WONDER WOMAN 1984, DON’T @ ME). But... it’s a universe that stumbled as soon as it was born. Man of Steel was a fine first outing, albeit with creative decisions that I didn’t really gibe with. However, Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice was a colossal failure in almost every respect (and source of much personal anguish, but that’s a post for another day). Following that has been hit or miss, and the less said about David Ayers’ Suicide Squad, the better. But since The Flash hit the reset button on the cinematic universe, the question for all the comic fans is: what next? Where can we go from here?
And that leads us back to Jaime.
Before I go into spoiler territory, I’ll speak in broad strokes. This is a solid film. I really, honestly think it’s great and stable ground from which to build out a larger universe, but more than that, it’s the first one of these in a while that felt like it was about something. There were strong cohesive themes about family, legacy, capitalism and (failed) revolution, growing up, and navigating different cultures throughout. I’m not in the habit of giving out grades or scores, and honestly I don’t care for them. Grading is for chumps anyways. The movie speaks for itself in so many ways, and is so well-crafted, I can’t recommend it high enough. If you’re tired of superhero fare, that’s fine—the story is good enough divorced from the cool effects and sci-fi silliness of the genre. But I digress. Give it a watch. It’s fun and has given me a lot to chew on. VAYA CON DIOS, MUCHACHOS.
The Boy who would be Bug
--SPOILERS BELOW--
Jaime Reyes is a young man with frankly too much on his mind. Coming off the heels of graduating from undergrad, he comes home to the fictional Floridian city of Las Palmeras to be with his family and start his life. (Note: In the comics, Reyes is from the actual city of El Paso, Texas, which gives his setting an entirely different vibe which frankly is disappointing, but that is probably the only major change in adaptation that bugged me, which is small potatoes if we are being honest.) But Las Palmeras itself is a parable, a city divided between the rich and the rest of us. The Reyes family tells him upon arrival (and after eating some local tacos) that the family is losing the house. Rent got jacked up, and the patriarch had a heart attack and can no longer run the family auto repair shop. So, Jaime and his sister Milagro scramble to find jobs, low-paying service work for the richest and most powerful family in the city, the Kords.
The Kords, in contrast to the Reyes family, is one defined by their internal division. Where the Reyes family is instantly warm, boisterous, giving, caring, and supportive of all efforts of the respective members, the Kords are broken in multiple ways. In many ways, it’s a mirror to the Stark family of the Marvel universe: the dead patriarch built a weapons manufacturing company, the successor son wanted to get away from that in favor of more consumer-friendly tech, and in the wake of his disappearance, the overlooked sister Victoria Kord has steered the company back to its domineering and destructive roots as a weapons contractor for the US government.
A fresh take on an old structure
I think it’s impossible to talk about this movie apart from its relation to Iron Man. I’m sorry, it’s about a person who wears a super powered high-tech suit of armor and fights against a usurper who wants to continue weapons proliferation and western hegemony. That’s the plot! That’s the text! It’s built on the same bones, and you’d be foolish to not see it. However, divorced from that rough sketch, the difference is all in the protagonist, and how they relate to family. Tony Stark is an individual, largely at odds with everyone else including his loved ones. He didn’t know how to be a person, let alone a person in connection with others. He had lived his life as a rich kid, and I’m sorry, that breaks your brain a bit.
But the protagonist here did not come from a rich family. He came from an immigrant family, one that emerged out of the revolutions south of the border and escaped from them to find a new life in the US, and they have spent the past 3 generations trying to live the American dream. And finally, the American Dream has swallowed them whole. They live in a poor neighborhood slowly being gentrified by the rich, epitomized by the Kords. They are on the brink of destruction in a world that’s straining from the stress of the capitalist system on the margins of the imperial core, and they are not going to make it without a miracle. So, this is a different kind of story, built on the spine of the Iron Man model.
Coincidences happen. Jaime walks in on a feud between Victoria, current CEO of Kord Industries, and Jennifer, the lone, orphaned daughter of the missing-in-action Ted Kord, the former CEO who was interested in wacky inventions rather than weapons. Jaime tries to intervene, to be the hero he is inside, but reality is far less accommodating, and this action gets him and his sister fired.
Little Bug, Big Impact
For people on the bottom of the economic ladder, escaping your situation is largely impossible. But dammit, Jaime wants to stand up for people, and so he does what’s right, even if it comes at personal cost. That’s the through-line of the film. You do what’s right because it’s right, not because it will win you praise or security. You stick up for people, and you support your family.
Jennifer catches up with Jaime, offers to keep in touch with him, and the two make plans to meet up the next day. Wacky hijinks ensue, and Jaime winds up in possession of an alien artifact that reacts to him, yadda yadda yadda, and wouldn’t you know it, the Scarab chooses Jaime to bond with, and becomes a symbiotic high-tech super suit. You know the tropes, you know how it goes. BUT. You see this all from the perspective of Jaime and his family. When Jaime’s clothes burn off, and he bursts through the ceiling, you understand “Oh, shit, that’s some serious property damage in this rental house.” Later you even see the tarp over the hole, and the poorly re-built table that got broken in the chaos. It’s little touches like that in the film that remind you “Oh, this is the kind of world that has consequences. Problems happen, and they keep having ripple effects.”
We learn later that the Scarab was something that Ted Kord was looking for, because you see, he was secretly The Blue Beetle II, the successor to Dan Garrett, the original Blue Beetle, and original owner of the Scarab. The Scarab never chose Ted, but Ted carried on the legacy of the name. We know this because Jaime’s Uncle gives us the backstory—Blue Beetle was his favorite hero. He was “if Batman had ADHD.” Batman with a sense of humor. An inventor who was into heroics because it was right, but also because it was fun.
That’s a crucial thing I think is worth dwelling on. It’s a statement of the kind of legacy that the DC movies as a whole need to wrestle with. The last time we saw heroes, it was very self-serious. Little levity, and even less color. Superman was a grimacing beacon of power, and a reluctant messiah. Batman was an uber-fascist terrorist. Wonder Woman was a world-weary soldier who saw the worst of humanity. It was a Dark Universe filled with Serious Heroes.
Now, the first outing in this brand-new rebooted DCU? You get a kid who stumbles into it all. You get someone whose very name is defined by his color! Blue Beetle. It’s a goofy kind of name for a kind of outlandish character, but it’s one that fits. He’s a bug. He’s not a messiah, or a dark avenger, or a warrior princess. He’s a kid. A kid with the world on his shoulders. A kid who lives with his family on the ground level, not in a skyscraper or a Batcave or a fortress of solitude. He’s a kid from the poor side of town who got a lucky break and wants to fight for the little guy. That’s a statement. That’s a proper introduction to a new world. Yeah, all these titans and gods exist, but their problems rarely intersect with ours. The billionaire downtown who wants to buy up all the land in the old neighborhood? The one who wants to sell weapons of war and doesn’t care about the people that get in the way? The one who sees people as little more than test subjects or obstacles to getting profit? That’s the villain.
Rudy, Jaime’s uncle, says that he loved the Blue Beetle because he was “one of us.” That is what he meant for him, and it’s a legacy that follows the name. Jaime is now the bearer of that legacy, and that’s not meant to be a burden but a challenge. And the best part is? He’s not doing this alone.
A Family Bug
See, at some point Jaime gets captured, naturally. And who is there to bail him out? His family. All this time he’s spent trying to save and support them has not gone unnoticed. They take a bug-shaped tank, a bunch of weapons, and liberate him, while Jaime gets another shot at confronting the big bads. The final super-suit having goon gets a backstory—wouldn't you know, he’s a product of the warmongering that Victoria Kord stoked in Latin America—and it’s through empathy, relatability, and love that Jaime is able to defeat him. Strength is not in power. It’s in you and your family having each other and supporting the little guy.
I say we failed Blue Beetle, because it kind of came and went this year, didn’t it? It had the bad luck of being in the middle of a historic writer’s/actor's strike, and so promotion was stifled. But it’s also a C-list hero that nobody had ever heard of, with the biggest actors in it being Susan Sarandon and George Lopez.
The thing of it though, is that kind of was how Iron Man started too. Iron Man, before the 2008 film, was a C-tier superhero. Robert Downey Jr. was a has-been washed-up actor. Yet it exploded in popularity. I wish Blue Beetle got the same treatment. It deserves a second look. It’s fun, energetic, and has real stakes and real story to it. It has a lot to say about our current moment from the position of living at the margins of society, and I really can’t help but say that we need it right now. We need fun. We need hope. But more than anything, we need solidarity. Love, empathy, solidarity—these are the things which give us strength. And that’s what Blue Beetle has in spades.

'Blue Beetle': Latino Culture Reigns Supreme in Long-Needed Superhero Departure
'Black Panther' proved there was an immense audience for movies based on diverse comic book characters. Will DC's latest also deliver at the box office?
— Steve Appleford | August 11, 2023
Tumblr media
As a young comic book writer and fan in 2006, Josh Trujillo was immediately captivated by a new take on an old second-tier superhero, the Blue Beetle. Less important than the character’s powers and ancient scarab technology was the name behind the mask: Jaime Reyes, a high school kid from a Latino home in El Paso, Texas, grappling with his new capabilities amid the usual teen angst.
Traditionally, most superheroes from DC and Marvel were dependably square-jawed and Caucasian, but this was something different. “The fact that his name was Jaime —that’s something you rarely saw in comics at the time, and even now, it’s relatively rare,” says Trujillo, a Los Angeles-based creator who now writes the character for DC Comics. “I kind of became obsessed with learning everything I could about him.”
Now, the character is the latest superhero to lead a live-action feature film, Blue Beetle, directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, with Xolo Maridueña (the hit Netflix series Cobra Kai) in the title role. The August 18 release from Warner Bros. Pictures will face a variety of constituencies, including fans outraged by last year’s cancellation of Batgirl, which had been anticipated as the first superhero film starring a Latina actor, Leslie Grace. Blue Beetle also lands after disappointing box office numbers in June for The Flash, which some blamed on allegations surrounding its star, Ezra Miller. Others suggest, not for the first time, that the superhero genre is simply running out of steam.
For many of those eagerly awaiting Blue Beetle, its arrival as a commodity could not be less relevant to its value as a cultural statement, regardless of fallout from The Flash. Superhero fans from Latino neighborhoods across the country are openly anticipating the film, which stars a mostly Latino cast, including George Lopez and Adriana Barraza, with Susan Sarandon as a ruthless villain named Victoria Kord.

“Everybody’s really excited about this in the community,” says Frederick Luis Aldama, author and professor of humanities at the University of Texas at Austin, where he teaches courses in comics studies and Latino pop culture. “The support is going to be because, for the first time, we have a Latino superhero who is the protagonist — he’s the one carrying the story. And we haven’t had that in the past.”
Aldama, who has adopted the nickname “Professor Latinx” (a takeoff on X-Men’s Professor X), noted his disappointment that the film relocates Jaime from the borderlands of El Paso for the fictional Palmera City. But he appreciates that in the comics, and in the movie trailer he saw a month ahead of the film’s release, Jaime “didn’t lose his Latino-ness” after being transformed into the Blue Beetle. “It was very much still a part of his identity and his struggle.”
Before Blue Beetle, the first major superhero film to feature a Latino lead character was 2018’s animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, winner of that year’s Oscar for animated feature, with a kid named Miles Morales in the Spidey mask. It was followed by this year’s sequel Across the Spider-Verse. Last year, Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness included a teenage Latina superhero named America Chavez. And in The Flash, the central role of Supergirl was played by Colombian American Sasha Calle.
Most likely, the castings aren’t so much about social justice as reading the room. In 2021, Latinos made up 24 percent of the U.S. moviegoing audience, according to a study by the Motion Picture Association. “Within the Latino community, there’s always been excitement for colorful characters and larger-than-life heroes,” says Trujillo, who also created an openly gay version of Captain America for Marvel. “You see that in luchador [wrestling], right? You see it in even telenovelas. There’s this larger-than-life element that people are really drawn to in our community.”
With the new DC Universe brand of superhero films, television, and video games still a full year away, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has declared that the movie’s incarnation of Blue Beetle is “the first DCU character” of the new regime. What exactly that portends for future films with Blue Beetle was left vague, but the film seems destined to rise and fall on its own, unconnected to any of the major DC heroes. It’s also arguable that Maridueña is much better known for Cobra Kai and better positioned to lead a film than The Flash’s Miller had been.

“He looks just like Jaime Reyes, and we all know he can act,” says Trujillo. “The special effects and the action, it feels very youthful. It feels very fresh. I think a lot of people who might be turned off by the heavier continuity of the superhero movies will be able to find something new and something they can really take ownership of in the Blue Beetle movie.”
The negativity emanating from Batgirl’s cancellation continues to resonate. The company line from the newly merged Warner Bros. Discovery was that the film was unreleasable, though the move was widely seen as a Machiavellian choice by CEO David Zaslav in order to take an easy $90 million write-off, turning the mogul instantly into DC’s least popular supervillain.
Zoe Saldana, a star of three popular movie franchises — Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Trek, and Avatar — called the cancellation a “truly atrocious act from a studio.” And filmmaker Kevin Smith, normally a dependable booster for the comics properties he adores, noted that it was “an incredibly bad look to cancel the Latina Batgirl movie. I don’t give a shit if the movie was absolute fucking dogshit — I guarantee you that it wasn’t,” pointing to the sterling bona fides of the film’s codirectors, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, on the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel.
The Batgirl cancellation drew the attention of U.S. Representative Joaquin Castro of San Antonio, who was already critical of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. Castro was one of four members of Congress in April to urge the Department of Justice to investigate the merger. “I don’t see how it’s been beneficial to many people,” Castro says.
That said, Castro is already looking forward to Blue Beetle and has met with the director and star, with plans to rent a theater in his working-class “bread and butter” district to share the film with members of his community. “I and many others were concerned at the time of the Batgirl announcement that the same thing would happen with Blue Beetle. I’m glad that it didn’t,” he says. “It’s important for the Latino community because Latinos have been excluded from Hollywood, by and large, in front of and behind the camera.”
Castro has also been active in promoting Eva Longoria’s streaming comedy-drama Flamin’ Hot and attended a screening at the White House. He says these films follow generations of Hollywood stereotypes of Latinos and other communities, if they’re shown onscreen at all. “So Blue Beetle, where you have a Latino who
is a superhero, is a striking departure from the usual Hollywood fare of Latino as gangbanger, as ‘illegal,’ as criminal. And that means a lot.”
The movie was already in production when Trujillo began writing his recent comic book miniseries Blue Beetle: Graduation Day, which is set for rerelease in book form in time for the movie’s debut. He says it is the first American mainstream superhero comic to be created by an all-Latino team, including Spanish artist Adrian Gutierrez. He was given bits and pieces of information from the movie to incorporate into his storyline but hasn’t seen the film. He hopes to attend the premiere and bask on the “blue carpet.”
“I’ll be there day one, regardless,” he says of the Blue Beetle movie. “I do think there’s a bit of a rising tide, and DC in particular has done a really good job of embracing the Latino community. I’m really grateful that DC’s been on board for it from the very beginning.”

why did you call Jackson a "white guy" on twitter? Colton Haynes has Native American descents, therefore Jackson is canonically a POC. If you apply the "Tyler Posey is half Mexican so Scott is Mexican too even though Scott McCall was written as a white guy in the script and his race is never even mentioned in the actual show" logic to Scott, then you have to apply it to Jackson, Theo, Erica, Derek and other characters too. Otherwise you are just a hypocrite
1. Colton Haynes may have 1/32 or 1/64 Cherokee ancestry, but he is not a member of Cherokee Nation. Moreover, he himself never claims that ancestry; the source is something that someone (it could be pretty much anyone) put on his fucking IMDB page. Listen to ACTUAL NATIVE PEOPLE about this: because actual Native people have written about why Colton Haynes isn't Native, and their voices are the important ones here.
2. That post I linked by @/capricornsicle addresses Tyler Hoechlin as well: he claimed Native heritage once, on twitter, in 2012 (not even a specific tribe, just "Native American"), but said he was still researching & it's never come up again. More importantly, he does not claim membership in any First Nation. Therefore, he isn't Native and neither is Derek Hale.
3. Scott and Melissa being Mexican *IS* brought up in the show, actually. I believe the refs to it start during season 3a.
4. I said literally nothing about Theo Raeken during the past few days of talking on Twitter about the harassment campaigns against me and others back in the Teen Wolf fandom of old—the ones that, among other results, pushed me back into active suicidal ideation and pushed a 19-year-old Black girl to not only leave the fandom but to also leave tumblr entirely because she couldn't get away from the 30-something white woman who resented being asked to NOT SAY THE N-WORD—nor did I say anything about Cody Christian's heritage.
4a. Nor would I have said anything about either of them because Cody Christian isn't white. He is a member of the Penobscot Nation.
5. If your argument for bringing up Erica is that her last name is Reyes, then either: a. you're showing your own ignorance, because Latinx people can be white. "Latinx" is a complex ethnocultural designation that includes both white people (e.g., Cameron Diaz) and BIPOC (e.g., Gina Torres, Zoë Saldana, Benjamin Bratt, Jaime Camil, Guillermo Diaz, Kandy Muse/Kevin Candelario, queer icon Javier/Harvey Guillen);
or b. showing your own hypocrisy, because if your argument is that Erica is supposed to be a BIPOC character, then you should still be pissed off that a white actress was cast to play her. (Literally, the only thing I can find on Gage Golightly's heritage is "white." Not even "1/4 Polish, 1/3 Scottish, 1/3 Irish, 3/17s German" or something. Just "white.")
6. Trying to prove that the Teen Wolf fandom was never a hot mess of racism and harassment……by sending me anonymous harassment that is also massively racist. Bold move.
Tumblr media
7. Congrats on getting anon privileges revoked for everybody. I'm not dealing with the garbage I went through back then again. (For that matter: are you bringing twitter shit over here because I have you blocked over there or something? Because that happened with some dude who brought twitter shit to my AO3 comments a while back so he could block-evade, and if that's the case………please get a life?)
8. I'm not in the Teen Wolf fandom anymore. I haven't been for YEARS. I only spoke up about long-buried Teen Wolf fandom wank to help explain a common site of confusion between people who experienced or witnessed the bullshit of the Teen Wolf fandom, and people who talk about "antis" and "pro-shippers" in the sense of "people who harass, stalk, suicide-bait, etc. other fans on the Internet over which fictional characters they want to kiss, make erroneous allegations of pedophilia over people shipping two unrelated adults who the anti doesn't personally approve of, etc." and "people who don't do that."
I spoke up because I've seen that confusion A LOT, in multiple contexts. I've actually tried to speak up about it multiple times before; this past weekend is just the only time when one of the big names in contemporary fandom ""discourse"" [wank] actually listened. In all of my threads about what happened back then, I tried to be very clear that the people behind the harassment were not indicative of how the entire Sterek fandom behaved, that many people in the Sterek fandom didn't realize what was going on because the narrative got spun and the victims of the harassment got vilified so hard, and that I was not attacking Sterek or people who ship it, only discussing how I and others were targeted for YEARS of harassment by people who did ship it, all because we: a. said that bigotry was wrong and undermined the idea of making fandom inclusive for everyone; and b. shipped things other than Sterek.
None of this should be controversial. If you want me to actually say something controversial: I think Lady Camden is fine? On the current season of Drag Race? But she's not some Robbed Goddess who's being unfairly overlooked by the judges just because she hasn't won every challenge or because she got rough critiques during the girl group challenge. She's just a talented queen who is doing fine in the challenges, but outside of the soap opera challenge, in my opinion, hasn't had as many standout moments as a lot of the Drag Race fandom seems to think. She's just fine, y'know?
There, I have been controversial for you.
Now kindly shoo and leave me alone.

Title: Jaime Reyes Drabble 1 Summary: I noticed that the Jaime Reyes tag was over saturated with a particular ship (admittedly one that I love) and decided it wasn’t fair to the fans who like Jaime but not said Ship, and decided to write a series of Short Stories centered on Jaime. Real summery: Jaime struggles with a Math Test and gets to know Khaji-Da a little better. Word count: 343 Also! I know some people have trouble with the weird Japanese emojis, but I used some of those in here anyways. If you don’t want to see those, I apologize but this is not the fic for you. [Are you sure you do not require my help, Jaime Reyes?] Khaji-da asked, as Jaime glared at the stats test in front of him. He knew he should’ve done his homework the night before, and that he should’ve studied a little. Heck, he’d even been planning to, before Kaldur sent him off on a wild goose chase they’d gotten from an anonymous tip. He hated solo missions, especially since the Team no longer counted Blue Beetle as a single person, but rather as a pair, thus putting him on so many more missions without anyone other than his Scarab as backup. [I am helping.] Khaji decided, when Jaime messed up on something he knew well, again. ‘No, Khaji!’ Jaime thought desperately, as he lost feeling in his arm. ‘No! Your handwriting is different than mine!’ Sadly, Khaji couldn’t hear his thoughts. Not yet. They were not quite combined enough for Khaji to be able to do that. He did, however, do his best to copy Jaime’s handwriting, and because he was an AI working through a flesh and blood body, he managed it fairly well. The Scarab also talked through what he was doing as he did it, so Jaime basically went through the introductory lesson again. [Khaji-Da, I know all of this, I just didn’t have time for a refresher and didn’t sleep well!] Jaime thought, petulantly. [… Jaime Reyes, I heard that.] Khaji said, expressing surprise. [We will have to celebrate this.] [I suppose we will, but can I please have my arms back?] Jaime asked, managing to think in the same way as before. It was slightly different than thinking into the telepathic link, or thinking to not say something on same. It was very different from thinking normally. [(╹◡╹)] Jaime added, when Khaji-Da complied, letting Jaime take back his test. [I was not aware we could use… those.] Khaji said. [Neither was I, I was trying to think in a regular smiley face.] Jaime added. [Now, what’d’ya say we finish this together?] [( ̄^ ̄)ゞ] Khaji agreed.

I know there are people who criticize others for liking characters like Kuvira, Azula, Zuko, Jet etc. and yes I do understand that they have done a lot of bad things. But the thing is, they are fictional characters. They are villains. They are supposed to be bad (idk about Jet tho, people seem to hate him for no reason sometimes).
So here is a list of characters who have done bad things but people don’t get criticized for liking them. I have explained some of them, not all. Some of these characters are from shows or movies I haven’t even watched, but I know they aren’t good.
DISCLAIMER: I do not support bullying others for liking certain characters. You are free to like the character you want, but I also expect you to recognize the things they have done. If you bully someone for liking a certain character, you are scum. Ok thank you, now for the list
Octavia Blake (Cannibal, burned down the hydrofarm to get people march to the Shallow Valley)
Bellamy Blake (Murdered hundreds of Trikru soldier while they were sleeping, left his sister to die)
Lexa kom Trikru (Betrayed Clarke at the end of season 2, almost killed Raven and was ready to let Octavia etc die in Tondc)
Echo/Ash kom Azgeda (Killed multiple participants in the last conclave so that her people would win, almost killed Octavia (by accident tho))
Clarke Griffin (Has killed a lot of people, killed Bellamy because of a notebook she didn’t even take with her)
Raven Reyes (Uh those people who died inside the generator in season seven. Yeah that’s on her)
Finn Collins (Killed a village of grounders because he thought they had Clarke)
John Murphy (He’s a thief, has hurt people to survive)
Emori (A thief, lied her way out of testing the radiation and an innocent man died instead of her)
King Roan
Charmaine Diyoza (A terrorist, forcefully took over the Shallow Valley, kept Abby and Kane “prisoners” for her own good)
Abby Griffin (A cannibal, outed her husband to the council and got him excecuted, electrocuted Raven)
Lincoln kom Trikru
Thelonious Jaha (Do I have to explain this one)
Becca Franco/ALIE
Josephine Lightbourn
Damon Salvatore (Rapist, murderer, liar, manipulator)
Stefan Salvatore
Klaus Mikaelson (Honestly, I don’t need to explain this one either)
Elijah Mikaelson
Rebecca Mikaelson
Honestly the whole Mikaelson family
Katherine Pierce (Did anything to survive, hurting people on the way of doing so)
Loki
Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader
Kylo Ren
Bucky Barnes
Catra
Hordak
(Entrapta. In closed captions because I really understand why she kinda switched sides but anyway)
Scorpia
Double Trouble
Varrick and Zhu Li
Billy Hargrove
Derek Hale
Draco Malfoy (Racist, a death eater)
Actually the entire Malfoy family
Bellatrix Lestrange
Sirius Black
Severus Snape (Outed Lupin, a death eater, literally stalked Lily, he wasn’t in love with her, he was just obbsessed, bullied literal children)
Dumbledore
Tate Langdon (He’s a... School shooter. That should be enough)
Honestly I don’t remember anything about American Horror Story but the show has a lot of questionable characters that a lot of people love so basically all of the characters from the show should be on this list
Allison Dilaurentis
Mona Vandervaal
Daryl Dixon
Negan (I shouldn’t have to explain this one)
Cersei Lannister
Jaime Lannister
Victor Strand
Azula, Zuko, Kuvira, Jet etc fans don’t deserve to get hated on when there are characters like the ones listed above who people can love without being criticized. I don’t care if the characters listed above are “misunderstood”, “hurt”, “traumatised” or whatever, so are Azula, Zuko, Kuvira and Jet. You don’t get to pick and choose who you are going to hate and then love one of the characters listed above.
Feel free to add more characters.

Salt of the Earth ~ 002
Salt of the Earth by MsMoon
Chapter 2 ~ Inquiring Minds
Chapters: 2/?
Chapter Navigation: 1, 2,
Fandom: Young Justice
Rating: ExplicitWarnings: Angst, Feeling? Violence?
Relationships: Maybe I was a little hasty in my last post...but no. She’s still 14, and this is Gen.
Summary: After responding to an incident, members of the team are saved by an unknown metahuman. But no protocols are in place to deal with the series of unfortunate events that assail Anitia Moore. What exactly should the team do when a someone with powers needs training but doesn’t want to be a member of the team?
The Warehouse that Nightwing had jokingly hoped would become more of a warehome didn't pan out, but it did serve a purpose. It was now the perfect front for Zeta tube convergence, and the team often met there before returning to their new HQ. With the League fully operational, space had been made for them. Technically, they were still in Mount Justice, albeit several levels underground. The perfect place for a new secret bass was beneath the bones of the old one.
Conner stood at a comfortable distance behind Robin, partially amazed at the consistent clacking blips and bloops the boy's fingers made as they pianoed their way across the screen.
Tim was even more of a technology buff than Dick had been…. and that's saying something.
Most of the others had filed out after the initial report had been filed... Kaldur had left Tim to his own investigative processes.
Robin had leapt immediately into scanning the crystal and data mining for additional images to pull from. Conner stayed behind because he was invested. La'gaan as well, though he was pacing, arms crossed, staring at his own feet. Dick, Jaime, and Bart had joined them, all three of them staring intently at the computer screen as Tim typed.
Thanks to traffic cams on the bridge, Tim had managed to get several awkward camera angles of the fight… not that it helped to identify the freak with the masks and the staff. He was well and truly covered. That meant they had to look at details for him.
"What's that on his staff?" Jaime asked, pointing to a single slip of orange on the edge of his staff.
Tim's eyes flick to the screen before even more furious typing. The shot is mostly static, he's walking. Nothing more. The computer freezes the image and zooms in, but it blurs.
"Impossible to say at this resolution." Robin muttered. "Something inlaid into the wood, maybe." A minute shake of his head accompanied that inquiry before he moved on entirely. The query had been cataloged, but there was too much to consider to waste time on it.
"What have you gotten so far?" Nightwing asked.
"Computer puts him at 6ft 4." Robin reported. "Around… 250 pounds, give or take." He sighed heavily. "Due to multiple masks, we can't even hope for a facial recognition. And every bit of his skin is covered… Superboy says his eyes were green."
"So, no distinguishable marks, but he has green eyes."
"Exactly."
"The woman?"
"Anyone else think she looks like Milla Jovovich?" Jaime asked, tilting his head to the side. "I mean, she's tan, but… in the face and all.."
"I see it." Bart said, his head also tilted to the side. "The white hair's a bit much."
"Computer has her around 130 pounds, and she's…" he squinted, looking a little more closely at the readout. "... 5 foot 9?... a little under."
"Damn. That's tall." Impulse rattled. "And not just because I'm short. Don't say it's cause I'm short. That's tall."
"It's above average." Superboy said with a shrug. "It's really light for so tall…"
Robin muttered under his breath, frustrated by the lack of data. "We have a clear shot of her face, but no matching facial recognition."
Conner stares at the shot Robin's referring to, the one of her suspended in mid air... Her face is open, unobscured, and utterly surprised. He remembers that face, and how quickly it shifted to fear... fear that she was hurting him.
"Nothing in the DMV database?" Nightwing asked, his voice reflecting shock.
"Nothing."
Nightwing turned to Superboy. "You were closest to her. Did she sound international?"
Superboy shook his head. "No. She definitely sounded American."
"Hey, look at this." Robin hunkered down, enlarging a camera on top of the bridge.
The angle was awkward due to a previous strike. It was tilted downward, but the angle suddenly became perfect when the masked freak jumped up there… the bottom of his staff was directly in front of the camera. Robin froze the image and flipped it to reveal bright orange letters that spelled out the word…..
"Virgin?" La'gaan asked.
"Virgil." Nightwing corrected.
"Did that asshole steal that staff from some guy named Virgil?" Jaime asked.
Robin shrugged, typing 'Virgil' above the guy's figure.
"Dude… really?" Bart asked.
"We've already got a Virgil…" Jaime reminds.
"It's the only name we have to go with at this point." Robin said with a shrug. His attention snapped to a popup screen to his right as the computer flashed the words 'Possible Match' and '98%'. "Fingerprints!"
"What now?" Conner asked.
"The rock? The clear Kryptonite? It had three fingerprints on it!" he said as he tapped the link under the word 'match'. "The computer's found a viable…"
They all stared as the image of a tiny, mousy-haired girl came up in sharp contrast next to the woman it had matched her to.
"No way…" La'gaan murmured, his eyes drifting between the two, his arms hanging listlessly at his sides.
"She's like… four feet tall!" Bart yelped, trying hard not to laugh (and failing).
"Who is she?" Nightwing asked.
"Anita Lilian Moore." Robin recited the words in a more robotic monotone than Red Tornado.
Nightwing stared at the images. They all stared at them. "Uh… go back to the security footage and… see if you can find this girl anywhere on, near, or around the bridge around the time of the incident."
Robin's fingers sprung to life, entering in new search parameters into the recognition software.
"What are you thinking?" Conner asked.
Dick shrugged, reaching for his cell phone. "We know that the other one could turn invisible…" he sighed as Superboy's eyes narrowed. Even he could see that Dick felt like he was reaching.
"Transformation, maybe?" Jaime ventures.
"Maybe…" Nightwing scoffed. "Stranger things have happened."
"Recognized, Batman 02." The imminent arrival of the Dark Knight was immediately followed by, "What do you have so far?"
"Fingerprints from the woman, but… they belong to this girl." Nightwing reported.
"We have confirmation." Robin announced. He pointed to an area where pedestrians could walk on the bridge. While her frame was slight, she was certainly there. Taking photos of the view over the water before the attack.
Kaldur joined them. "That is always good to hear." Dick repeated Robin's findings to Kaldur, while Batman glared at the images on the screen.
The puzzle pieces were clearer, but...but he still wasn't entirely sure how they all fit together. They needed more intel.

a decade of self recs
i’d like to invite anyone who wants to to participate in this exercise along with me!
this is a self rec and a reflection on a fic from each year of the decade
fandoms include: percy jackson, adventure time, a song of ice and fire, girl meets world, gravity falls, young justice, the flash, my hero academia, the mcu, and the handmaid’s tale.
2010: I didn’t even know what fanfiction was! oh my gosh i was a baby!
2011:
I Won’t Ever Leave You Alone
Fandom: Percy Jackson
Pairings: Percy/Annabeth
Summary:  What happens when Percy's sent to the Roman Camp and flat out does not want to remember his past? Can it have a happy ending? It's my first fan fiction and I hope you enjoy.
A.N: This WAS the first fanfiction that I ever wrote. It was bad. It’s STILL bad. however... if I didn’t ever write this one, then I never would have gotten less bad. That’s important!
2012:
The Ice Prince
Fandom: Adventure Time
Summary:  "Some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice" Robert Frost. The lonely ice prince wonders a frozen wasteland of his own creation, searching for companionship he will never be fortunate enough to find, with only vague recollections and half memories as comfort. Drabble Ice Prince!Finn
A.N: this fic is actually shorter than the author’s note I wrote for it, but... I’m not going to lie. The atmosphere work is really great and the wording flows really nicely. I’m proud of this little piece. I think out of everything that I wrote that year, it shows my potential the best.
2013:
Hot Chocolate Heals All Wounds
Fandom: Percy Jackson
Pairings: Reyna/Annabeth and past Percy/Annabeth
Summary:  Moving on is never easy, but with hot chocolate, love, laughter and Reyna by her side, Annabeth might just manage.
A.N: 2013 was where I really started to take off as a fic writer. I improved drastically over the course of the year, but I still think that this fic that I wrote during the summer is the closest to my heart. It’s the first of my “ladies getting over trauma together and falling in love” genre.
It’s not as good as I remember it being, and oh lordy. the smut.. the smut is bad. But there’s a lot of potential here, and I can still look back on it fondly.
2014:
The River Rushes On
Fandom: A Song of Ice and Fire
Pairings: Catelyn/Cersei
Summary: The official reason that she is sent to Riverrun is so that she can learn to be a proper lady alongside Hoster’s daughters. The unofficial reason, of course, is that Tywin found his golden twins having sex.
Or, the one where all good things end, but life continues.
A.N: I had a bit of debate going between this one and a sansaery fic that I wrote that year, but I decided that this HAD to be the choice. Catelyn/Cersei is a pairing that I came to on my own, but I ended up really loving because of the friends I made through the pairing. While this might not have been might best writing of the year, I feel like it was a formative enough experience that it overrides that.
honorable mention: like the songs, a tragic sansaery au where sansa was a traveling singer
2015:
Caged
Fandom: A Song of Ice and Fire
Pairings: Sansa/Margaery
Summary:  In an alternate universe where many of the members of the Westerosi elite are magical creatures, the Lannisters seal Sansa Stark's wolf form deep within her. Margaery Tyrell vows to break the spell.
A.N: this is where we get into fics that I might actually recommend to someone. This one was one of the last fics that I wrote during high school, and it was inspired by our class reading of Macbeth and the emotional turmoil of getting ready to head off to college. There’s still some stuff I’m REALLY proud of in there. The spell ingredient “blood of a lover, willingly drawn” is still fantastic, the dream is still chilling, and I honestly sometimes think of adapting this premise into an original story.
honorable mentions: a guide to coming out, the girl meets world edition
her heart’s duet, the mabifica soulmate’s au
2016:
Over the Shadowy Hills
Fandoms: Young Justice
Pairings: Artemis/Zatanna
Summary: Wally is dead, but Artemis isn't. She's trying to learn how to deal with that.Featuring: Bart Allen, product placement Netflix isn't paying me for, blatant symbolism, and snaibsel sweaters.
A.N: 2016 was a REALLY hard one. I wanted to put like, 3 star wars rebels fics, but i’m holding myself to my one fic per year policy, and if it’s one fic for year... then it has to be over the shadowy hills.
one of my other friends helped me work this into a fic that i could be really proud of, and it’s the better version of the same fic type as “hot chocolate heals all wounds” from a couple years earlier. i’m still really pleased with the way that this one panned out and i couldn’t leave it out of a best list,
the honorable mentions:  you were someone, once the winter soldiered! ezra fic that helped me become friends with @bodhimcbodeface, the ketbine soulmate au where sabine drew dicks all over her face, and then there’s the mirialan!ezra au.
2017:
you, me, and the flash makes three
Fandom: The Flash
Pairings: Cisco/Iris, eventual Cisco/Barry/Iris
Summary: When Barry Allen wakes up from his coma, he finds out that Iris is dating Cisco. He tries really hard to dislike the guy, but Cisco makes it really hard. He's a likable dude.Things get more complicated from there.
A.N: i have a few others that i would have liked to put for this year, but i saw “you me and the flash makes three” and then i was like. well shit. i can’t pick anything else. this fic is a little under 15k and it’s really one of my favorite things that i’ve ever written. it’s a little cheesy and at parts feels a little clunky, but i think that the way that i was able to hit the most important emotional beats for season one of the flash and flesh out all the relationships within an ot3 outweigh that.
honorable mentions are: how to fall in love with your mark, the bluepulse fic where bart allen realizes that he can’t kill jaime reyes and
mantis prays to oregon, the guardians of the galaxy vol. 2 fic where mantis is ego’s biological child, but that somehow makes everything worse
2018:
Ad Astra Per Aspera
Fandom: My Hero Academia
Pairings: Ochako/Bakugo
Summary:  Ochako sees none of herself in Bakugo’s pure rage, her sheer confidence. Bakugo holds up an enormous middle finger to the world and says come and get it. She’s harsh. She’s loud. She’s angry. She doesn’t say what’s on her mind; she shouts it.If she’s being completely honest, Ochako is a bit in awe with her.People might not like her, but they take her seriously. Bakugo grabs them by the throats, pulls them in and says “I am woman, hear me roar."
Sequel to "knights in shining armor"
A.N: 2018 was the year that I embraced the gender bend and started writing bildungsromans that deal with coming of age and trying to puzzle out wtf being a person and gender even are. I’m really pleased with all of them, but this is my favorite. Partially because I think it’s the most well-written, partially because I like the motifs the best, but mainly because it taught me a lot about myself and my writing.
Also it accidentally got me to ship kacchako, which is something I appreciate.
honorable mentions: hers, not his: the fem!todoroki one where she learns that sometimes telling your dad to fuck off isn’t worth giving up the things that you love
gimme a boost over heaven’s gate, the one where eleanor and tahani end up on the same talk show together. then bone. then become better people
2019:
Paint a New Horizon
Fandoms: A Song of Ice and Fire
Pairings: Sansa/Margaery and abusive Sansa/Joffrey
Summary:  Sansa is a painter. The moment that she meets Joffrey he becomes her muse. After they get married she starts to see his true colors unfold in front of her and she loses her passion. Then she meets Margaery. Her presence changes everything, and reignites a passion for painting and for life that Sansa thought was long buried. It’s too bad that leaving Joffrey isn’t an easy task.
A.N: this fic is 23k of my sweat and tears. i know that it’s kind of a weird premise, but this was the most gripping writing i’ve done all year. it was exactly right for me at that moment.
however, it does spell a bit of a turning point in my writing and life. in the past, i have written short fics that i could get posted fairly quickly. this fic was the result of multiple weeks of work when i was off school, not working much, and focusing mainly on... writing this damn thing. moving forward, i’m going to have to try to figure out a way to keep up my motivation and drive with longer projects when i don’t have the time to dedicate to HUGE chunks of work at one time when i also know i’m not going to get the instant gratification of kudos immediately after a long writing sesh. i know that sounds silly, but this is the first year where the majority of the fics i wrote WERE longer.
while i’m very pleased with all of these longer fics, it does mark a shift that i will just have to learn how to deal with.
honorable mention: A Woman’s Place, the handmaid’s tale time travel fix it fic

“Kids with cool powers and PTSD”
I’m still laughing at that comment. And trying to figure out what it means. But its so funny.
Was a comment on that joke post about how much I dislike the protags of Code Lyoko and Animorphs.
Like? Yes? They are sad children with powers? I’ve watched/read both things? I know who the protags are?
And like? ‘kids with cool powers and ptsd’ is a sentence that can define like 90% of all child protagonists in fiction? The Lyoko Warriors and Animorphs are literally not unique?
Like Zak Saturday (The Secret Saturdays)? The Burners (Motorcity)? Tony Jones, Edyn, Strag (Magi-Nation)? Martin Mystery and Diana Lombard (Martin Mystery)? The Get Down Brothers and Soul Madonnas [no powers but who cares](The Get Down)? Eva/Molly, Jordon, Aikka (Oban Star Racers)? The main cast of Spider Riders? The Teen Titans and friends (Teen Titans)? The many casts of Digimon? Them kids in Avatar the Last Airbender? Jade and Paco in Jackie Chan Adventures? The kids in Xiaolin Showdown? The kids in that new Voltron show? The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (old live action movies, 2003 cartoon, and most recent 2d cartoon)? The kids in Three Delivery? Jaime Reyes, his friends, and sister in this first comic run? Manny from Empowered [def not a childrens series but I read it as a kid so]? Ed, Al, Mei, Ling, and Lan Fan from FMA? The Marvel Runaways? Coraline and Wybe (multple versions of Coraline)? That kid and those teenagers from Train to Busan? And more that I can’t recall in the moment!
Guess what those characters? All kids! All different amounts of fucked-up, had fucked up shit happen to them, and/or probably need hugs and therapy! Some have cool powers or tech or just skills and survival instincts! Some of them had the fate of the world on their shoulders! Or just the fate of the local China Town. Or just looking out for their own lives and those of the people close to them. Some of them are fuckbois. Some of them are brats. Some are just kinda dumb. A few of them are very morally questionable.
But guess what? I like them. I want to see them thrive and succeed in whatever they’re trying to do.
My like and affection was fucking earned. Not just b/c they happen to be sad kids. Sad kids are a dime a dozen.
To earn my respect and affection either they have to be very well written on the whole to make me care about the characters no matter what they do. Or the characters are strong enough to be a draw on their own despite being surrounded by shit or average writing.
Animorphs is poorly written. Animorphs is bad. Its iconic yes, but like fucking Naruto is iconic and there are very few people who are able to delude themselves into thinking that Naruto is good. And guess what? I don’t give a shit about the characters! I’m not rooting for those cunts. I am actively baffled that they haven’t died yet from their own stupidity. Cassie and Tobias being the worst shit stains of human beings on the team.
I would never ever say that Code Lyoko is bad or poorly written. B/c Code Lyoko is still one of the better cartoons I’ve ever watched. Lamo, i’m just not a kid anymore. I notice details. The warriors are just kinda jerks and not good people and not fun enough to make up for that. And frankly a decent chunk of the shit they’re going through is self inflicted from their selfish decisions. And its a lot more fun to root for the angry AI trying to kill these cockroach motherfuckers.
HAhahahahaha
heh
(was also reminded about those bitching posts that go ‘yall say you want complex flawed characters/shows/whatever and then bitch when you get one’ and its like. Yeah, we want complex flawed characters/shows/etc the one you’re defending just happens to be shit.)

Hard To Separate (Bluepulse Fanfic)
((Disclaimer: Guys guys I did a Bluepulse Fanfic thingi. I mean it's not very well written because what can you expect from a 12 year old with English not being my native language and with me writing this at 1 am. It's not smut btw, don't worry. (Word Count: Approximately 1650) Enjoy!)) Jaime and Bart were out in the desert where they could destroy rocks or make each other's self portrait masterpiece from the rocks. But of course, that was too good to happen. Blue Beetle, or what was left of him, fell on his knees and closed his eyes. He pressed his hands to the sides of his head. "Get out!", he screamed in pain. "Jaime!", Bart's voice sounded so distant. Bart didn't stop running until he found himself in front of Jaime. He fell on his knees in front of the older boy. Both were in pain, except Bart's pain wasn't visible. It never was. Jaime opened his eyes slowly to see the boy in front of him, looking like he was tearing up inside. "B-Bart?", he asked and tried to stand up. He couldn't. His muscles weren't doing what he wanted them too. He was losing control over the Scarab and he knew it. Khaji Da was silent. But there was still those other voices talking and screaming and crying in the back of his head. So many voices, that it sounded like buzzing. He couldn't hear his thoughts. Knowing someone will end up hurt, he looked straight into Bart's eyes and said, "Bart, run!". Bart's eyebrows raised but his body didn't move. "No.", he said, "I'm not leaving without you. I'm not running away.". Jaime growled. The voices were getting louder and louder but they were still too many of them for Jaime to understand what they were saying. "Bart, please. What are you waiting for?! Go. I'm losing control.", Jaime tried to keep it together but it was stronger than him. Stronger than Khaji Da. Stronger than the Scarab. The Reach. "T-Than I'll help you get it back!", Bart was shaking, probably unconsciously. He put his hand on the older boy's shoulder gently. Jaime could feel his hand trembling. For less than a second, the voices got quieter. "Jaime, you've got this.", Bart tried to ensure him softly, probably not sure himself. Nothing could ensure Jaime, not even Bart. He knew he didn't have much time. He was hoping to hold it for a little longer. Just enough for Bart to leave but the goddamn boy was still there. Suddenly all the voices stopped. Bart didn't see it coming, did he? Blue Beetle's arm turned into a big blade. It went through Bart's stomach like a knife through butter, quicker than the Speedster could ever imagine. Bart's eyes widened as he gasped. The blade went out faster than he could blink. Its blue and black tip was bloody. Bart looked down to the wound and then back to Blue Beetle...Or whoever was standing in front of him. The younger boy could still feel the cold metal inside him. He knew that wasn't Jaime anymore but he gently reached out his hand and slowly put it on Jaim- I mean, Blue Beetle's cheek. A simple action of affection that didn't matter anymore. He then fell to the ground and blacked out. He didn't know how long had passed since then. He woke up suddenly. He looked around. Familiar faces. He recognized them but he didn't care. He tried to stand up but a few arms put him back down. He saw Dinah and Dick at first. Then he saw Superboy and M'gaan, then Logan. He tried to take a deep breath but something was wrapped really tight around his stomach and chest. He looked down to see a wide dressing covering a big part of his upper body. "You're awake!", Miss Martian exclaimed. He put his head  down really fast so it banged against whatever it was that he was laying on. "W-Where is Jaime?", he asked although he felt he already knew the answer. "We... Don't know yet.", Dick looked away. He wasn't surprised that was the first thing Bart asked. Superboy looked at Dinah and asked quietly, "Do we tell him?". "I might be impaled but I'm not deaf yet.", Bart barely spoke out. "Tell him.", Dinah nodded. "We think that Jaime is still somewhere there, deep down. Because he inserted the whole blade inside you in such a precise way it couldn't affect any important organs.", Superboy said. This gave Bart the last spark of hope he needed. "Bart, don't you even think about it. You're not going after him, under any circumstances. Not until you recover completely.", Nightwing said just before Bart even tried to stand up once more. He closed his eyes in surrender. That was some sick nightmare. And the worst part was he couldn't wake up. "Track him. Find him.", Bart said, "He needs your help way more than I do.". "We have direct orders from Batman- ", Nightwing started but Bart cut him off. "Since when are we following orders?", Bart snapped back bitterly. "Superboy, M'gaan.", Nightwing said without moving his eyesight from Bart, "Inform the team. Dinah, I'd like you to stay here.". Dinah nodded while Superboy and Miss Martian left the room. Bart sighed. Nightwing turned to him, "What happened there?!". "I don't know.", Bart wasn't a good liar. He remembered every second of it until he blacked out. "Bart.", Nightwing came closer, "How did he stab you? You're a Speedster. Why didn't you run away?". Bart looked away , "I wanted to help him.". He unconsciously clenched his fist. "And risk your life while helping him?! Certainly not a good idea.", Nightwing responded in a mixture of anger and concern. He walked to the door and stopped in front of it. "Batman and the League are dealing with the Reach.", he said without turning around to face Bart or Dinah, "Thought you might want to know.". Bart was so grateful for this little piece of knowledge. He knew that if the League is doing a mission instead of the team, then it was serious. Dinah pulled a chair and sat down close to Bart. "Can you tell me what happened? Every little memory or detail can help us and the League finding a way to defeat Blue Beetle. Without hurting Jaime. The Rannians kindly offered their help and thanks to them, now Green and Black Beetle are in a prison on Rann. The Reach are going to be easy for the whole League, which means only Jaime is left.". "Wait.", Bart thought to himself, "The whole League?". "Nothing I tell you will be helpful", Bart said sadly. "Batman to the Watchtower.", a big hologram of Batman appeared, "Report.". "The Impulse is awake.", Dinah said. "Blue Beetle has been caught. We're bringing him in.", Batman reported back. Bart's heart skipped a beat, "Don't hurt him!". Both Dinah and Batman looked at him. He cleared his throat, "Um, I mean, Jaime Reyes might still be somewhere inside him.". "How are we going to process?", Dinah turned back to Batman. "Bring him in.", Batman responded. "What?!", Impulse and Dinah said in the same time. "Yes!", Bart smiled and stood up. He got a little dizzy but he'd never admit it. The hologram dissappeared as suddenly as it appeared. Dinah helped him stand up. Bart appreciated how strong she actually was. She led him into a big room. In the other side of the room Blue Beetle was tied up with long metal chains around his neck, his feet, his arms and his stomach. There were two destabilizers in case the chains don't work. He was trying to free himself like crazy. Bart would've gone straight to him if there wasn't a big thick glass between them. "Can he see us?", Bart asked. "He's not supposed to be able to.", Dinah said but just as she said it, Blue Beetle looked at Bart and stopped pulling away. Dinah looked at Bart, "I think he sees you.". "I think so too.", Bart responded, "So, uh... What do I do now?". "Talk to him. He can hear us.", Dinah suggested. "Right. Uh... Jaime, I know you're in there. That's why I'm here.". Blue Beetle fell to his knees again. So did Bart. He got strong flashbacks from the last time they saw each other. Bart slowly pressed his palm to the cold thick glass. He didn't hear or see and neither did Blue but the whole team filled the room. Blue slowly pressed his palm to the glass just like Bart. His palm was bigger than Bart's. "There he is.", Dinah said quietly. Some of the team members gasped. Both of the boys knew that they had fallen deeper than they'd ever expected. Slowly the Armor started dissolving until it wasn't Blue Beetle anymore. It was just Jaime. And let it be noted that his palm was still bigger than Bart's. The warm brown eyes quickly found the green sparkling ones. They'd never been happier to see each other. Bart didn't hesitate to vibrate his molecules through the glass. His lungs felt like they were on fire, he forgot he was wounded. He also forgot Jaime was still chained up. Bart wrapped his arms around Jaime's neck and pressed his lips to his. "Jaime Reyes, the Impulse's guard is down. I suggest immediate attack would be more effective.", the first time Jaime was happy to hear Khaji Da in the back of his head. Bart and Jaime didn't even hear the team cheering excitedly or Batman sending orders to Nightwing and Dinah to set Jaime free from the chains. Once they separated Jaime was put into scanning to see if any of the Reach's tech was left inside him or the Scarab and Bart was put back into recovery because Jaime might've gotten cured but that didn't apply to Bart. Man, that would totally leave a scar. Also, let it be noted that the two were hard to separate. ((Feel free to comment your opinion/constructive criticism, I appreciate it))

Bendis is moving to DC y’all
Tumblr media
DC has Marvel’s highest seller writer, Brian Michael Bendis, the mind behind Marvel hits like Modern day Spider-man and Peter Parker, Jessica Jones, and the revival of Luke Cage. Miles Morales, and Riri Williams. The man that weave interpersonal and intense storylines such as Peter’s first and failed attempt at tacking the Kingpin and Avengers spending most of their time playing poker.Love him, hate him, or wish he would stop dragging on arcs, this is undoubtedly big news in comic circles.
Now, I have been a big follower of Bendis. I have read all 160 issues of Ultimate Spider-man and the 40 plus issues of Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-man. I read Daredevil, Moon Knight,Guardians of the Galaxy and stopped reading Guardians of the Galaxy, regrettably Civil War II, Age of Ultron, Alias, and so much more. So I know Bendis’s strengths and weaknesses as a writer. I know his quirks and tendencies.Like how random characters who have up to a point have been depicted as protestant or non-religious just randomly start using Yiddish slang(Peter Parker and fucking Mary Jane randomly say tuchas a lot).
With that said, the question on everyone’s mind is what is he going to write?  As a connoisseur of Bendis’s bullshit, I can say that Bendis specializes in grounded characters. “A super hero that is grounded? What sense does that make?” I know right, but he has been kicking DC’s ass for nearly two decades so it is something of a speciality of his that people are willing to consume in bunches. And quite frankly, it is a good hire because DC, in general, when it comes to heroes, they write heroes as symbols and not heroes as ordinary people. Marvel writes heroes as people and because they are people, they become symbolic if that makes sense.
What I mean by grounded, I mean characters with daily middle to low class lives. People on their grind trying to work a 9-5 in the day and put on costumes and beat up thugs during the night. He is also great a noir and crime fiction, gritty or not so gritty. So the type of Superheroes that fight crime on a relatively low level. Street crime fighters.
We did some discussion and agreed Jaime Reyes would thrive under Bendis’s pen because he is pretty much Peter Parker except instead of Spider-bite, dude gets a hostile alien implant. It has been said that the character has been struggling and sales so Bendis’s name recognition would work.
Batman? Sure. Bendis did make a great Daredevil run, some would say it was his magnum opus, and Batman is Daredevil without the idealism and riches. Honestly, the only Batman I accept is DCAU and has nothing to do with Kevin Conroy as it does have to do with people writing the character as this infallible borderline sociopath that just does not kill. The problem with this is that Bruce Wayne is rich and you can just glance at Bendis’s Invincible Iron Man run and see how quickly he ditched the character in favor of a more down to Earth Riri Williams.
Now honestly, I think Superman is a bad idea. Bendis likes personable characters and Superman is a symbolic character. A symbol whose significance worn thin because he was supposed to be emblematic of American immigration in that even with his homeworld destroyed and essentially being an alien, he is still American as anyone. Yes, Bendis being Jewish and Superman being derived from Hebrew mythology would make you think it’s a match made for heaven, but the issue is that in spite of Clark’s mundane life, Clark Kent’s life is modeled after trying to be Clark Kent, a normal person, and less like Superman. If Superman gets pissed and has a bad day, we got Injustice like totalitarian rule. Superman’s entire struggle is that he has so much power that in everything he does, he has to walk around eggshells. It’s a world of cardboard for him. And that is okay. I am not knacking him, but in terms of superheroes, Bendis is out of his element. or would be.
Bendis is not great with narratively busy comics. I know this because if there are too many plots going on at once, he starts making characters talk in his voice, and so they are out of character. He does not explain things and just wants to get to the next moment. Read Civil War II and Age of Ultron for examples of this. These events are emblematic to why you should not give this man very complicated and heavy stories. Do not give him Justice League. It is a bad idea.
So we have narratively condensed, everyman characters with an aspect of crime noir. These are what brought Bendis to the dance.
@ubernegro
While I’m not as much a Bendis connoisseur, he’s been always around at Marvel, shaping it whenever he went, around the same time I came back to comics as a teenager. In fact, he’s been such a stable of Marvel for so long the sudden news he is jumping ships sounds so bizarre to me I’m half expecting to find out somebody spiced my coffee with drugs and this is all a hallucination. This is not the first time a writer unexpectedly jumped ships but might be the largest one since Grant Morrison had enough of being treated like shit by X-Men editorial and that one even Joe Quesada didn’t see coming before they announced it. It makes me worried how bad exactly are things at Marvel that even a company powerhouse like Bendis is leaving.
I’ve been checking out other sites and aside 4chan tearing itself over like they always do, it’s also trending on Twitter, with people like Tom King openly welcoming him with warm arms while others, like Gail Simone, are making their own guesses what he will get. In fact, here is hers:
Tumblr media
Which is as far away from everything said above as possible. I mean, nothing speaks “grounded” like a team of aliens in far future.... buuuut apparently Bendis once admitted he would want to write a Legion book one day. I’m almost hoping DC really got Hickman, with whom they were apparently in talks, to do a Legion book instead and I’m not a fan of Hickman.
Back to the predictions, I agree that Batman might not be the best fit for Bendis. But I also think that one of his strengths is how rich the setting and supporting cast he provides. I could totally see him on a book about one of more grounded Batfamily members, like Red Hood and the Outlaws or maybe someone who don’t have a book right now (Azrael or Batwing?) or maybe even one of the villains. I could actually see him try Nightwing at some point, if given good editor it could be a midpoint between his Spider-Man and Daredevil books.
Gotham also proved it can be a solid backdrop for a series about normal humans in an absolutely batshit, no pun intended, setting. Gotham Central and Gotham Academy, with solid, beloved runs, really prove it. And while I wouldn’t trust Bendis with Renee Montoya or Maggie Sawyer, I could see him taking over Rebirth of Gotham Central, especially as he always got along with Ed Brubaker, one of its original co-creators. On the other hand, they might try to give him some street-level character like the Question, whom they messed up in New 52, to Rebirth.
Jaime is also a possible choice, as his book has been struggling to have good sales and seems to be sadly heading the way of Superwoman, with a writer change that in the latter’s case was followed by cancellation announcement. Bendis is the kind of writer who could bring to Jaime numbers Dan DiDio would want right now.
Which brings me to I think an important question - who managed to catch him? If Dan DiDio, then Bendis might join crew working on his pet project, Dark Matter imprint. And considering how much people compare Teriffics to Fantastic Four, Damage to Hulk and Sideways to Spider-Man already, this would be a whole new level of sticking it to Marvel. ESPECIALLY if he gets on Sideways, whom DiDio is co-writing with different writer every arc - first being Justin Jordan, second the abovementioned Morrison.
On the other hand, Bendis is friends with Geoff Johns, who, according to rumors I heard, is apparently in a bit of a power struggle with DiDio and had gotten an upper hand thanks to Rebirth. And when you consider what project Johns is working on right now. And what characters will it likely introduce to DC Universe. And who in comics inevitably come to mind when you think of terms like “grounded”, “narratively condensed”, “flawed”, “everyman” and “crime noir”.

you still being hypocrite, coward, liars scoundrels and communist and you believe in these bad directors like JUSTIN HALPERN and PATRICK SCHUMACKER that these scoundrels produces thinking that eco-terrorist ,PAMELA ISLEY, POISON IVY like savior ,healthy and heroine and blame and demonize the SUPERMAN, KAL-EL, CLARK KENT, THEODORE KORD,BLUE BEETLE ,MICHAEL CARTER, BOOSTER GOLD and WALLY WEST , FLASH and how much shame and disgust do I have about you?
When I saw the preview for this with "hypocrite, liar, coward" I assumed it would be about my dyke and feminist crimes, so I was pretty thrilled upon realizing it's about fictional scoundrel PAMELA ISLEY.
I assumed this guy meant Joel Schumacher and was gonna say I'm actually not really a fan of that portrayal but after googling the other name I found out they're producers for the new Harley Quinn cartoon which leads me to believe this is actually at least a little about dyke crimes.
(Also Jaime Reyes is MY blue beetle. Also also nobody cares about booster gold. fuckin geek)

Title: Jaime Reyes Drabble number two

Summary: Jaime has a chat with one of his cousins, and Khaji-Da doesn’t know how to handle it.

Word count: 568

Disclaimer: The cousin is an OC, and slightly modeled after a friend of mine. The other cousin mentioned is also an OC and is supposed to be purely herself. Any other similarities to persons real or fictional is purely because I can’t realize where my inspirations come from. “Hey, dude, long time no see!” Jaime looked up at the familiar voice and beamed at his cousin. “I almost felt like you were avoiding me!”

“What? No,” Jaime protested, greeting the other boy with a hug. “I was just busy with work, honest.”

Hector, Jaime’s cousin took a step back, raising his eyebrows. “We go to the same school, live in the same neighborhood, and normally hang out at least twice a week for a family gathering. I haven’t seen you in like six months.”

[Actually, it has only been just under four months, Jaime Reyes.] Khaji said. Hector didn’t know about Khaji, or that “work” was being Blue Beetle.

“Chill, Primo, it wasn’t that long.” Jaime said. “But, I have been skipping on family stuff way more than I’d like, I’ll admit. From what I’ve heard, though, there’ve been a lot of arguments.”

“Debates on whether or not Blue Beetle is a hero have gotten a little heated. Only your parents like him anymore, of the adults.” Hector shrugged, and the pair started walking. Jaime tucked his phone in his pocket. “The girls and I don’t really think it needs to be argued. If he’s a hero, he’ll keep being a hero. If he’s not, the Justice League’ll fight him. Easy as pie.” Hector chuckled.

[This Scarab finds the Hector Cousin’s words threatening; Recommendation: sonic cannon.] Khaji-Da declared.

“That’s cool. I’d like to think Blue Beetle might one day join the Justice League.” Jaime said. “I mean, he’s pretty strong, and now that he doesn’t have to listen to the Reach, I’m sure his only goal is to do his best for the planet.”

Hector hummed, considering this. “We still don’t know why he worked for the Reach though, do we?”

“Didn’t he like, say that the armor that allows him to be Blue Beetle was created by them or something? I dunno.” Jaime shrugged. “I wouldn’t work for those bugs willingly.”

[As you and the other youths are fond of saying, same.] Khaji chimed in, causing Jaime to chuckle slightly.

Hector looked at him curiously.

“Oh, I have a second brain now. He’s in an external casing on my back and is screaming at me to shut up in case you take this seriously.” Jaime grinned, and his cousin laughed, hard. “I didn’t think you’d believe that.” Jaime joked.

“Ah, you always have had such a weird sense of humor, Primo. Anyways, where are you going? I’m on my way to Jasmine’s.” Hector patted Jaime’s shoulder, wiping a tear from his eye.

Jaime shrugged. “I’ve been asked to head to work. It’s not urgent, but the boss thinks I can help translate something, or at least that my second brain can.” He made it sound like he was teasing, and Hector laughed a little more. “Anyways, this is where I peel off. Dinner’s at Jas’s tonight?”

“Yup, six thirty, like always. You coming?” Hector asked.

“If I can.” Jaime agreed.
[You told the Hector cousin far too much!] Khaji hissed, as Jaime and Hector gave each other a brief wave before turning to go their own ways.

“Yeah, yeah.” Jaime muttered. “Look, do we want to look at the hieroglyphs or not?”
[… Hurry up to the Watch Tower, Jaime Reyes. The Egyptian hieroglyphs are amusing.]
“What was that about AIs not having feelings?” Jaime teased, ducking into where the zeta was hidden.
[Shut up.]

“In the comic book industry you work for your comic book, panels, characters, and if they (Comic Book publishers and editors) see the popularity then they’ll see that and take notice but either way the community plays a huge role on bringing awareness.” - Chris Sanchez
The Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) is Chicago’s take on comic book conventions and one of the city’s most memorable events to attend. C2E2 takes place at McCormick Place during the Spring season and on the weekend of April 6th-8th we rejoiced with panels touching on topics such as students working with comic mediums, cosplaying on a budget, diversity in cosplay, as well as #BlackComicsMonth.
Many wonderful artists, along with television and movie stars - like Mark Millar, Phil Lamarr, R.L Stine, and Chicago’s favorite Svengoolie - get to feel that nostalgia with fans, especially those  intent on meeting, greeting, and experiencing everything at C2E2. The event makes any comic book geek flip with joy and wonder, especially when meeting their idols, and you can’t help but let that 7 year-old in you jump out and cry with glee.
When attending the convention, one walks into a whole new world that disconnects from the outside and separates itself from other industries. This convention merges diverse communities and different worlds into one while enabling  guests and cosplayers to be themselves, full of creativity, love, and enthusiasm for their craft and work.
Delving into the diverse communities of C2E2 provides an opportunity to cross paths with others while also gaining valuable knowledgeable especially through its many informative panels. As an example, as I wandered around to find a panel that felt close to home and close to my heritage, I stumbled upon one in a small hidden room. There, I was able to experience and take in the Latin genre panel, “Hispanics in Comic Books,” hosted by Chris Sanchez and John Marroquin. In the discussion, the artists provide a glimpse into this exciting movement that is gaining momentum in indie comics. They explained how Hispanic and Latino characters are being created and portrayed within the comic industry.
This panel shed some light on creating and opening up the culture within the market. It also taught those in attendance some aspects of Latin American history. Sanchéz and Marroquín questioned if it’s the comic book communities ability to merge these fascinating characters filled with culture which are then fleshed out as characters that are already well known in the Comic Book community. With existing Hispanic comic book characters, a few are not able to become well known or form their own story, and a small percentage barely become fan-favorites of the community. Even if they do, they are portrayed as an anti-hero, anti-villain, or just a villain. On a brighter note, some of these anti-characters might just make it as criminals who are trying to change their life around…. nonetheless, they are still criminals.
As they mentioned:“Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel), Lunella Lafayette (Moon Girl), Miguel O'Hara (Spider-Man 2099), Miles Morales (Spider-Man), Robbie Reyes (Ghost Rider), Jaime Reyes (Blue Beetle) are well great and wonderful characters, but when are we able to see them in the big screen?”
The irony continued when they gave  citeful data, on the top three characters in movies of 2014, we (latinos) displayed the Hispanic Thug, the Latino Cop, and the Sexy Latina Woman. “I love Ant-Man, but look at his friend Luis (Michael Peña), he plays a criminal. Yes, he is funny in the movie, but he is representing a thief and a criminal. When can we see a Hispanic Superhero on the big screen or even TV Shows?” Marroquin added.
Tumblr media
After talking briefly with attendees, Marroquin then touched upon the power that the Hispanic community has, oblivious about the artists, illustrators, and even publishers being aware of this great community, there is still no voice that is being amplified and demand for these characters.
Engaging further in the topic, Sanchez added that being part of the comic book community is a business, but it is a business that that kids, teens and geeks still read and value. He followed that by remarking on how comic books are now the big topic and a great source of income in the film industry. For example, within the competitive world of Marvel and DC Film, the Black Panther movie (about a Marvel Superhero and King of Wakanda, a fictional African nation in the Marvel Comics) grossed $1.2 billion during its theatrical run. As Marroquin followed, “African-Americans are very vocal about their superheros. When can we (Hispanics) raise our voice? Chicago has a big Hispanic community with a lot of love, but where is the voice?”
When it was time for audience participation and opening the floor for questions, the attendees were curious about racial stereotypes. One fan asked, “How can we as fans and creators change or eliminate the stereotypes of these diverse characters labeled as villains or anti-heroes?” In which, Sanchez responded, , “Make new characters without stereotypes. Bring new characters and new stories. We don’t need characters who don’t have father figures, or characters who live in the hood.”  He continued, “Look at Moon Girl as an example.”
At first glance, it is very true. Often people from the community praise upon characters close to them, meaning a superhero without  a father, or living in the ghettos or “hood,” which makes some people feel close to that character. That is great for character development and for diversity but that itself is just labeling a majority of the Hispanic characters as people from those places or those who reside in harsh living conditions. A lot of these storylines, unfortunately, are being created by caucasian male writers and illustrators because that is how they see us.
One attendee also asked about the origin and creation of these characters and why they are never fully Hispanic, African, or of other descents. It seems to be  always half this and half that aka half-and-half-ethnicities.Then Marroquin questioned, “Is it our fault, as in our community? Do we speak up about it? What should we do?”
Tumblr media
Finalizing the panel, Marroquin and Sanchez touched on how culture is perceived within movies, comic books, and video games. They brought up two movies that acknowledged that Hispanic culture has been in filmmakers thoughts - “The Book of Life” (20th Century Fox) and “Coco” (Walt Disney). Both are distinctive films attracting the Hispanic community, but only one grossed well and created a vocal fan base while attracting a younger audience. Sanchez added, “It’s great to see ‘Coco’ being appreciated and supported by the community, and from other communities. Just look at the numbers! ‘Coco’ did great in Mexico and Japan! So seeing the support from everyone is amazing. Cultures should support other cultures, I agree 110%.”
Marroquin added on how different cultures can accept and support other cultures without racial stereotypes and generalizations, “I want it to become normal to the point that no one notices.”
I personally came to the realization that the Hispanic community has been active in the comic book world for awhile. Within the fan base, the forums, and the powerful characters, the love and support for diverse characters, and a wide range of cultures, is there, however, the community should be more vocal about their admiration for these characters in the film industry.
Evidently, Hispanic roots have and will continue to grow within this industry and it is just a matter of time, with continued support, for more of these superheroes to flourish.

Members of the media and press were invited to a media launch for Wattpad under the TV5 network last April 25 at the Isabela Ballroom at Shangri-la Makati.
Being a Gilas fan, I was so happy to find out I would meet the coach of Gilas 5 in person and I took a quick video of TV 5’s interview with him here:
Official photo of the interview from Wattpad FB page:

As the show returns to your television screens, be prepared for an all new exciting set of stories that everyone – especially millennials can surely relate to! May it be falling in love with a best friend, a love story with a dark twist or a love triangle, you name it, Wattpad Presents will have it.
To make sure that every scene is created with the highest production value, episodes will be produced by production houses known for quality films and commercials – Unitel and Firestarter, to name a few. The comeback of Wattpad Presents will also feature more popular titles and authors from varied genres like rom-com, romance with a bit of action, and even romantic horror stories.
To give you a glimpse of what’s in store for your Saturday Night Kilig Sesh sa Wattpad, here are the first four stories that will be featured:
(1) “Destined” written by Blue Maiden, which has reads of 22.4 M and the Wattys 2015 winner. The story involves a love triangle that will also leave a question to viewers “Who do you choose? The one you love or the one who loves?” The premiere episode, which promises to give everyone a “kilig” experience, stars former theater actress Sarah Carlos as Kayla; Ben Isaac, who was Dubbed as one of Chalk Magazine’s Hottest Male Celebs, as Kean; indie actress Kate Alejandrino as Krystal, and Candy Cutie Raphael Robes as Dwayne. Jaime Habac Jr., director of “Im drunk, I Love You”, will direct the premiere episode.
(2) “Just the Benefits” written by Beeyotch, which reached 28.9M reads. The story is about a power couple who still find themselves still drawn to each other after breaking up, so they’ve decided to keep it casual and just enjoy the benefits without any labels.
(3) “Unlucky I’m in love with my Bestfriend” written by Stupidlyinlove, with 38.1 M reads and was published by Summit Pop Fiction. The story is about BFFs Zandra and Zendrick. As time goes by, Zandra finds herself falling in love with her bestfriend.
(4) “Special Section” written by Onneechan, with 17.5 M reads. This is a story about a very controversial high school “Special Section” wherein strange series of events occurred with a romantic mix.
