"We're supposed to be sympathizing with Ed in the toe autocannibalism scene, not Izzy."
Hey, maybe consider that your inability to feel sympathy for a character that has mostly been a slapstick fail henchman being mutilated and tortured says more about you than the intention of the creators.

I wasn't even an Izzy enjoyer at first, not really. I thought he was a cool antagonist and Con did a good job playing him, that was about it.
Then Izzy antis tore the fandom into pieces and made it one of the most unsafe, uncomfortable and racist communities I've been part of and I became one out of spite. I'll never forgive you for ruining what was supposed to be a show about love and redemption.

I hope it does get cancelled. Izzy Hands stans don't deserve a second season.
?!?!? You want a culturally revolutionary show that has changed the lives of tons of queer people made by a cast and crew of talented passionate creators (who are currently in the process of making the second season and would be devastated to have that stripped from them) to be cancelled because you dislike a portion of the fandom? Grow up seriously, this is the most chronically online take I’ve ever seen. Also I thought I made it clear in my hot takes post that I find Izzy discourse absolutely insufferable, I’m not the person you should’ve sent this ask to. Everyone who felt seen by Our Flag Means Death deserves a second season. It’s the one thing that’s giving so many of us hope and joy in such a bleak time, it would be cruel to say someone doesn’t deserve that for such a stupid and inconsequential reason
I really hope you’re joking, and I thought that I implied this already but I’ll say it again so that everybody hears me; DO NOT BRING IZZY DISCOURSE TO MY BLOG. I engage in fandom because I love having a space where I can analyze and discuss my favorite TV shows with people who love them just as much as I do, I don’t engage in fandom so that I can argue with people over pointless shit on the internet. So please keep me out of that. This can go for any other ofmd discourse as well

I don’t understand the people that keep replying to those “hey it’s fucked up to harass people for liking Izzy” posts with complaints about Izzy as a character. Like it’s nearly fucking pathological, they see the word “Izzy” and must criticize him/his fans. The conversation is not about that, it is not about a fictional character. The conversation is about the real fucking people who are being harassed!

Btw isn’t Ed the abuser? Izzy was loyal to Ed till the end + was supportive of him retiring. He only wanted Blackbeard back bc they are pirates. They would all fucking die if he didn’t get his shit together. Ed is the one who lied to Izzy and changed up the plans continuously. Ed is the one who basically fucking manipulated him and left every responsibility to him instead of helping him out. Ed is the one who cut off his fucking TOE. I adore Stede x Ed but don’t let Ed’s usual demeanor fool you because he has two sides and it’s portrayed throughout the entire show.
meep i see what you’re saying - i think the inherent violence of piracy and like the norms of the show make me squick about using the labels of abuser or abusive? i think ed and izzy and stede all do shitty things cuz they’re shitty pirate guys and it’s fun to watch teehee
i think there’s a tendency to like … make ed’s character very clean and perfect bc we like sanitized queer rep? and with stede too? and i think that’s sad bc they’re all so like flawed and silly and trying really hard but also PIRATES!! maiming!! burn the ship cuz i’m a little bitchy gay!!!
idk its a weird line to be chilling on with like violence and silly and piracy and trying to be better and i think that’s why i really like the show and have difficulties being like. “online” about it? i feel like there’s commentary in the show about queer rep that comes from some online spaces … but also i don’t know teehee - i think the strength of the show is its queerness and ultimately where people feel disappointed that it is not nicer

regarding the latest 💿🐎:
it's wrong to assume people's sexualities or gender identities irl
in most shows, it is safer to assume a character is cishet in order to prevent being queerbaited, even though it's always ok to headcanon a character as queer
but our flag means dead is a QUEER rom-com
it's safe to assume a character is queer if that's what is hinted in the show or interviews. and to think that being cishet is the norm is just... sad :/

laughing so hard about that anon.... the funniest part is that they give huge Izzy energy! I can picture Izzy writing the same angry non sense about Stede
Izzy Hands, tears streaming down his angry little face, penning a diary entry like "STEDE FOCKIN BONNET IS A FOCKIN BAD PIRATE, HE'S REPRESSED AND HE SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THE OCEAN"

-_- yeah, nuance in media is important.
But commenting death threats on a random teenagers crack fanfiction for not properly considering the racial nuances of the source material while writing their silly fun story is NOT HELPFUL. Just found that the last fic in a series I've been really enjoying starts with paragraphs of notes apologizing. Nothing in the story justified that. What the fuck are y'all doing. I feel so bad for this kid.
Yes, Izzy hands is a horrible bad man. Yes, there is racial nuance in his relationship with Blackbeard. We can have a discussion of that nuance. No, i do not want to see writers or artists who redeem Izzy attacked. He's an interesting character, a character people feel lots of different ways about, and that's fucking fine.
But like. Stop holding fanworks to insane standards. People deserve to write light hearted comedy about ofmd, which is itself a comedy. I'm so mad and sad for this person. What, exactly, is so hard about don't like don't read.

I’ll probably make a long, rambling post about it later, but the idea that we aren’t supposed to sympathize with Izzy is ridiculous.
We absolutely are supposed to sympathize with Izzy, and I know this because the camera keeps focusing on his face during emotional moments. We wouldn’t have shots of Izzy’s eyes filling with tears after Ed shoves his hand away or Izzy frowning and contemplating after Ed goes to get drunk after messing up his date prediction if we weren’t supposed to be invested in his emotions.

Pictured: a flat villain character that is meant to inspire only hate, apparently.

actually can we stop talking about “deserve” when it comes to characters dying in fiction. not everything is a fable with a moral lesson to be learned. romeo and juliet didn’t “deserve” to die. bambi’s mom didn’t “deserve” to die. izzy dying in the finale doesn’t mean ofmd is saying that certain types of queer people “deserve” to die. fictional death can serve more narrative purposes than just punishment for the character doing the dying.

The thing about OFMD is that not a single character is genre aware. Stede thinks he's in fucking Bridgerton on a Boat; Ed thinks he's in a soap opera; Izzy thinks he's in the fucking Bible and he's Judas. None of them know they're in a slapstick comedy. That's why the stakes are all over the place and why they all take themselves so seriously while doing the most batshit insane stuff and then get angry at each other about it. Izzy's sitting over here going, "I am your most devoted follower. I am the only person who loves you enough to betray you." Ed's response is, "Yes, it's me...thought I died?...well think again... " and Stede is standing between them like, "Ours shall be a spring wedding!"

Can someone pls explain to me why people think Izzy hands is a racist? Did I miss something? I’m Māori + Carribean and I literally see nothing racist about his actions in the entire show. Is this just white fans overreacting to shit or an actual issue?
i’ve seen many takes in many different ways - bipoc voices are 1000% the only ones we should be listening to !
