I know I am going to regret this, but « You're throwing away our history like it meant nothing. » for the prompt game? *insert puppy eyes*

I am going to be fickle and write you FLUFF for that one. Auctioneer!Magnus AU for no particular reason other than I think it's hilarious.

(It's a car auction. Because Jace is a car salesman. A very nice one who does not cheat people! But still. For context, a car auction like the one I'm writing is basically a giant hanger with open doors on both sides that the cars that are for sale drive through. There's an individual auctioneer at each lane; they have a stand in the middle so they can look down on see all the potential bidders.)

All the dealers know Magnus' name. (Everyone in the building always knows his name.) Even if he wasn't him, even if he didn't say hello to everyone and learn their names and dress to impress -- with a lift of his chin whenever someone starts to get that look in their eyes, daring them to say something about his clothes or his make-up or his attitude, gifting them a toothy smile when they wince and back down -- Magnus always introduces himself at the start of every sale and whenever he moves to a new lane of cars, just like he's supposed to.

Though he makes sure he announces himself extra loud and clear and proud and with a wink towards his favorite buyer whenever he's there.

Alec, from Lightwood Motors. Magnus always says his full name, Alexander, watches to see the tiny hint of a smile that tucks in the corner of Alec's mouth when he does.

Magnus likes the way it rolls off his tongue, never uses just 'Alec' or his dealership's name like the other auctioneers who recognize him every week, never references him by his shirt or jacket or the color of the adorable knit beanie and finger-less gloves he wears when it's cold, not even by any of the bidder numbers he puts on the back of his binder, a neat grid against the dark blue leather, no leftover bits and pieces from last week's badges behind them like half the other dealers.

Alec is meticulous. Precise. Focused on his plan, on what he's doing, on exactly how much he thinks a vehicle is worth. He'll make a counter-offer occasionally when there's no one else bidding against him and the seller wants a little more, but he never jumps back into the bidding after he says no. Never lets another bidder push him up just one more time when he's bidding on a popular vehicle. It's the worst possible trait in a buyer from the auction house's perspective, of course, but Magnus finds it charming.

Magnus finds everything about Alec charming. His height, the contrast between his pale skin and his messy black hair, his ridiculous eyelashes that Magnus can't even blame on mascara, the way he can either scowl or smile just with his eyebrows. The incredibly neat handwriting Magnus has glimpsed when he's taking notes, how he double-checks the run list in his binder for every car, every time, just to be sure, the slight hint of teeth visibly pushing against his bottom lip whenever he's doing extra math in his head, the fact that he's never on the phone with the owner but always has final say on his bids himself.

The way he has never once made Magnus wait for his next bid, ready with the faintest tip of his chin (up with an echoing lift of his eyelids for yes, down and to the left as his eyes almost close for no) as soon as Magnus is looking at him.

Well. That's not quite true. Magnus always has half an eye on Alec. But Alec always bids as soon as it's his turn, always keeps track of who else is bidding, whether it's online or someone else on the floor, never gets behind, never loses his place. Not even when the auction is training a new clerk, and the display is periodically a step or two behind.

(Magnus suspects that Alec is, in fact, completely focused on Magnus, that he enjoys seeing Magnus as much as Magnus enjoys seeing him, but Magnus refuses to attempt to quantify it to prove himself right. He's certainly never going to ask.

Because then he might prove himself wrong, and that would be... unfortunate.)

He refuses to admit to anyone here, or himself, refuses to admit even to Cat or Ragnor on the rare occasions they pretend to care about cars, (only because they care about him, as they're much more likely to appreciate his stories about estate sales or art auctions, but those are specialty events, and he quite likes the steady loop of car auctions every week, NYC to Jersey to Delaware and back), that every time he sees Alec in his lane there's a greedy little voice in the back of his head saying 'mine'.

Which is stupid, he knows it's stupid, he knows Alec buys other cars from other sellers, not just the ones Magnus works for, that he is only in Magnus' lane every week because it's his job, but Magnus can't seem to stop the voice.

And the other buyer from Lightwood is never in his lanes.

Lydia is always impeccably put together, cool and pale and blonde and beautiful, wearing sleek slacks or a pencil skirt most weeks regardless of the weather, an engagement ring glinting on one finger and a single gold chain around her neck. She doesn't quite reach Alec's shoulder, even in her sensible pumps, and the sight of them standing side-by-side comparing notes would be slightly amusing on those grounds. Except they can both judge someone with a single lifted eyebrow at 10 paces, and there are few people with the nerve to survive that.

Magnus only works with Lydia if he's giving a break or covering for an auctioneer on leave. And even then he sometimes thinks he sees Alec in the lane across the way, glancing back as if he's thinking 'mine' too, as if he'd rather be there than let his co-worker bid with Magnus.

Magnus is ridiculous, is what he is, but that's alright. Alec doesn't seem to mind. He's still got that almost dimple every week when Magnus introduces himself at the start of the sale.

Until Alec's not there.

One week happens, now and then, and Magnus sighs sadly to himself and does his (less pretty than usual) job.

But Alec's not there the next week either, or the one after that, and Lydia is, Lydia is bidding in his lane. She doesn't stay there like Alec mostly did; he was tall enough he could cover two lanes only by switching which way he leaned, and only occasionally bothered to walk somewhere else.

Lydia is hopping lanes, walking back and forth, looking for whatever vehicles she's saved on her list. She occasionally even looks flustered, which is a rare occurence for her, she's generally terrifyingly competent, but she is trying to cover all eight lanes by herself, and that is, for most of the larger dealerships, a two or three person job. (Big Mike's usually has four buyers, but that's because Mike Jr. is a terrible micromanager and takes up half their time second-guessing them.)

Magnus is afraid to ask her about Alec, isn't sure how to approach her or what he'd say even if he did: 'Hi, we've never technically met, but where's tall, dark, and handsome, I miss him?'

Obviously he could just ask why she's covering by herself, but he's afraid he'd fail entirely at sounding casual, and then he'd be right back at 'please share personal information about your co-worker with a sort-of stranger?'

He looks up the Lightwood Motors website on his break but there's nothing out of order there, and Alexander's head shot is on the about page; he's a Lightwood too, fancy title and general manager of something or other, and Magnus clicks it closed, too flustered to read it properly.

Not just some random buyer, not just Magnus' favorite, it probably all had been in Magnus' head, and it ought to be a relief that he'd never said anything to anyone, never approached Lightwood directly, never embarrassed himself by acting like they knew each other when it was just sales banter, only professional camaraderie while surrounded by car exhaust.

Too much car exhaust over the years had damaged his judgement?

He didn't quite believe himself, but he tried. What else was there to do?

Magnus got a call from the Florida office of his management agency; Lorenzo was out for some sort of family emergency, could he cover an auction down there for a few weeks?

It was the day after his Delaware auction, which was the shortest one already, and Florida was an easier flight than California, which he'd done when Malcolm retired until they could find someone more local, so he said yes.

His first week he got moved off the lane he'd prepared for, and ended up selling for Lightwood Motors. The agent on the floor was from the auction, so no luck there, and the seller from the dealer was online.

Just his luck. Jumped south six states and he was still getting teased by the lack of his favorite pretty boy. “And who do we have with us from Lightwood?” Magnus asked before their first car. “I don't suppose it's Alexander?”

The online agent literally keysmashed in the chat box, and Magnus tilted his head. The clerk at the computer even let loose a giggle; she'd apparently never seen that before either.

[Sorry, this is Jace.] The second chat message was more normal. [Alec doesn't do sales, just buys. But it's nice to meet you, Magnus.]

“You too,” Magnus managed without sounding at all disappointed, and once again he did his job.

It was only later that he realized he hadn't introduced himself after Lightwood Motors had gotten online; they'd been the third seller in his lane. Had that 'Jace' just been listening to the lane before he signed in, or had that keysmash meant more than Magnus realized, did he recognize an auctioneer who knew Alexander rather than Alec?

Was Magnus being even more ridiculous this time? Or was it maybe not just in his head?

Only now he had to wait three whole days until he'd be back at the NYC auction and could make himself ask Lydia directly.

Only when he got to work on Monday, he didn't have to look for Lydia. There was Alexander, leaning against the wall beside the employee entrance, all long legs and ducked head and hands rubbing together.

Magnus almost tripped over his new boots and stopped with a mortifyingly audible stutter of heels against concrete.

Alexander looked up, and his expression softened, but it wasn't a smile, not quite, Magnus didn't know what it was, or what was happening, or why Alexander was specifically here where the dealers generally weren't and, "what?"

Alexander shrugged, making Magnus realized he must have said something out loud, even if he couldn't now remember what.

"Could we?" Alexander's head tilted, just as eloquent with his eyebrows as he'd always been when bidding, and Magnus followed him over to what had once been a smoker's nook, an old empty ashtray around the corner with an ugly green awning to protect it from the worst of the wind or rain.

"Mr Lightwood," Magnus began, which wasn't at all what he'd wanted to say, but he wasn't sure how to start anything else. He stopped as soon as Alexander winced.

"I suppose I deserved that."

Magnus opened his mouth, and shut it again. "I am very confused, Alexander."

That time he got a smile, and he couldn't help but smile back.

"Is it weird to say I've missed you?" Alexander glanced sideways at him, his hands still pressing against each other in what seemed to be a nervous tic. "I mean, we've never even introduced ourselves, but..."

Magnus reached out, and let one hand slide between Alexander's long fingers. His smile widened as he felt Alec's thumb start to rub against one of his rings rather than digging into Alec's other hand again.

"You're throwing away our long and meaningful history! I introduce myself to you every week, and you're just ignoring that? I'm offended."

Alexander snorted, and Magnus grinned in delight, ignoring how his hand felt almost chilly as Alec's fingers slipped free now that he'd stopped fidgeting. "There you are, I thought you had a sense of humor."

"You're probably the only one."

"I don't know, Lydia smiles when you roll your eyes at the other dealers, that seems promising."

Alec's head tilted, and this time Magnus couldn't tell what his eyebrows were saying. "You noticed that?"

I always notice what you're doing. Magnus wasn't sure he should say that. He just hummed instead.

"So I was, uh." Alec stopped. He was, perhaps, flushing very slightly pink. "I kept wanting to send you pictures while I was gone, but I don't, we don't. I only even know your last name because you're registered on the website, I mean--"

"Alexander!" Magnus cut him off, not sure he'd be able to survive any more of the delight that was rising up through his chest as if to drown him. "Did you look me up online?"

Alec's eyes widened, and his mouth opened but nothing came out. He was definitely starting to blush, but he looked almost horrified rather than anything more enjoyable for either of them, so Magnus kept going before Alec thought that was a problem. "I did that too, how did you think I knew you were an actual Lightwood rather than just a Lightwood dealer?"

Alec's mouth closed, and there, there was that almost smile again, the edge of his mouth tucking in tight and giving a hint of a dimple. "We're maybe a pair of idiots."

Magnus laughed. "I guess we are. Give me your number, pretty boy, and tell me more about those pictures, and all mutual idiocy will be forgotten?"

Alec handed over his phone, already open to an add contact screen, and shook his head ruefully. "I don't even know how you managed to say 'pictures' like that."

"It's a gift," Magnus said. He finished putting in his number, sending a heart-emoji as a message to himself before he gave the phone back so he'd have Alec's number too.

Alec glanced down, his smile widening for a moment before he put his phone back in his pocket. "I hate to disappoint you but I was driving cross-country with my little brother for one last 'adventure' before moving him into his dorms, so the pictures are entirely child-friendly."

"Aww," Magnus let out before he could stop himself. "That's so sweet. Did you take pictures of giant balls of twine and slightly out of focus mountains and diners surrounded by fields of corn?"

Alec blinked. "That's pretty accurate, actually."

"And you wanted to send them to me?" Magnus' voice was softer than he'd intended, not really teasing at all. "Really?"

"Every one." Alec reached a hand out and Magnus held it, both of them clearly doing it on purpose this time. “Join me for an early dinner after the sale, and I'll show them to you?”

Magnus almost swooned, and didn't even attempt to hide it. "It's a date, Alexander."

The fact that some people seem to think Ed was genuinely healing during the breakup-robe era and that Izzy is what made him swing so hard into the Kraken is literally driving me insane.

Was he trying? Maybe. More likely he was in denial and repressing the worst of it. Which is why, when it did all explode, it hit more like a nuke than a firework.

But like. If he was healing at all, he wasn’t nearly at the stage some people seem to think he was. He wouldn’t have been capable of becoming the Kraken if he had been, regardless of how ‘mean’ Izzy was being (’mean’, god this is fucking ridiculous, they’re pirates, they’re all mean Izzy’s just blunt).

No, Izzy didn’t help. He threatened to leave, he reminded Ed of the necessity of Blackbeard (no -- shut the fuck up -- listen to me, Blackbeard is important. Izzy doesn’t just want him back because he’s horny for violence not opening that can of worms but god is that read twenty types of wrong too. Blackbeard is their meal-ticket, he’s their armor. At this point, nobody wants to risk going up against Blackbeard, and there’s safety in that. In such an dangerous profession, whatever safety you can get is absolute necessity.), he brought up the one thing that was hurting him the most, in a particularly painful way.

But he didn’t make him do anything. Ed has his own agency. For the love of christ please stop infantilizing Ed for the sake of demonizing Izzy. And just. In general. He’s not, and has never been, a precious uwu baby who has never hurt people or wanted to. He’s fucking Blackbeard and you don’t get to be Blackbeard if you don’t ‘love a good maim’.

It does such a disservice to the character to pin all his faults on Izzy. It flattens them both (and Stede too, since, if it’s all Izzy’s doing, he doesn’t have to reckon with Ed’s fucked choices and how he feels about them).

hey, you were saying that you don't think izzy should've died and that you didn't agree with his character arc for reflected upon reasons. is it okay to ask what those reasons are? you just always have interesting opinions about tv and i'd love to know about this one

oh hi! well i'm happy to share my thoughts since you asked so politely lol i just didn't share them earlier bc when there's discourse ppl act so vile sometimes

anyways. izzy hands huh. multi-faceted, complicated, very intense character. let me begin by saying the fact that david jenkins and con o'neill managed to do a total 180 on izzy in terms of how the audience reacted to him between s1 and s2 without fundamentally ruining his character is astounding!! i think the whole point of izzy has always been the fact that he's a man who tends to hold on too tight to the stuff that gives him a semblance of safety (even though that stuff is usually pretty traumatic lol) and across s2 we see him slowly loosening his grip on blackbeard. the fact that it was precisely blackbeard's brutal return that made izzy realize both him and ed were in too deep really just adds to how awesome the writing was this season.

and now, just to clarify: i didn't say i disagreed with his character arc, but with the way it was executed. as in, i think izzy's journey was perfectly well written and acted out by con (please give that man an award), and up until the finale it was actually very well executed!! it's the last plot device that i disagree with.

killing off izzy was a bold choice, and a very common way in which writers both show redemption and pull poignant reactions from the audience, which is ultimately what any show strives for!! for the audience to feel deeply about certain characters or stories. i think ppl have forgotten that and focused so much on wanting everything to be emotionally "clean" and lacking of controversy. guys!! the whole of fiction isn't supposed to cater to everyone!! that's why it's fiction!! it can be manipulated by creators and audience alike and each individual piece is supposed to be different. if you don't like emotional ups and downs in the media you consume that's understandable, but don't condemn the pieces of media that do have it. simply don't watch if you don't like it. i personally like these feelings, the ugly, and the dirty, and the unfair, and the painful, the human!!! it's part of the experience and they did it well this season.

even with that in mind though, i think death was only one of the many options through which they could've symbolized izzy finally letting go of blackbeard and the toxicity that name represented for all of them. i get how 'i wanna go' as a show of the deliberate decision izzy is making to escape from the emotional turmoil of ruthless piracy is trying to make his death seem like a way for him to rest, but. it's a pretty definitive rest and i think it wouldn't have been necessary, considering that one of the main things izzy learns this season is that you can spend years in a terrible environment but it's still never too late to pursue something softer for yourself and for the people you love. he says it, too: 'it's about belonging'.

as much as it is understandable to have wanted to take the way of the tragic and unexpected, for the sake of impact and to heighten the significance of what izzy has become this season, it would've been nice to see him stare at a long, happy future with the new family he's acquired aboard the revenge. ed let go of blackbeard without it meaning he had to renounce to the rest of his life for it, why couldn't izzy? it would've been wonderful to see all those years of life experience as a pirate reconcile with the reality that they're not dependent on isolating yourself from others. for izzy to have become captain, or even frenchie's first mate, would've been an excellent seal to his story, even leaving a future full of possibility to further explore how his character gets acquainted with his new way of looking at the world.

izzy put it that way: it is about letting go of ego for something larger. and his death can mean many things simultaneously, but it can also mean that without his ego he couldn't live. which. i do disagree with, so.

i don't know!!! i just think about it many different ways!! like in this post specifically i chose to see it under a different light than what i'm currently writing, and neither of those opinions cancel each other out; they can coexist!! that's the fun thing about fictional media interpretation!! it's also why we have devices like fanfiction and fanart and meta!! the fact that something played out in a specific way on screen doesn't mean it's set in stone as something good or bad, there are always shades of grey.

hey ! it's not a weird question, honestly i'm flattered that anyone wants to hear my silly little opinions. so thank you for asking ! disclaimer that these are just my own personal thoughts regarding izzy's whip that he carries on his hip during the kraken era. they're all informed by (& i think consistent with) canon, but i do pull a lot of backstory out of thin air just for funsies.

first, we should note that flogging-as-punishment was more common aboard navy vessels than pirate ships during the age of piracy, though certainly not unheard of for pirates as well. we should also bear in mind that ed doesn't have any flogging scars, whereas izzy seems to have many. it is my personal headcanon that izzy was in the navy previously, & thus he likely earned lashings while in the navy, whereas ed did not.

& we could simply end there. or if you're me, you could look at the apparent several different layers of scarring on izzy's back, implying multiple separate floggings, & decide to make it Much Worse for fun !

one of the few pirates who does seem likely within the canon to dole out floggings as punishment was the notoriously cruel hornigold, who we know ed sailed with after joining piracy. we know that calico jack sailed with them as well (we don't see his back so we don't know if he has flogging scars), & i personally think that izzy must have sailed with them as well after deserting the navy in order to make the timeline of his sailing with ed for >20 years make sense.

considering that this puts them all in an environment where flogging was likely on the table, this makes it all the more compelling that ed's back is lash-free. especially given that i really don't see ed as the kind of person to never rebel, never once get into trouble (even while under calico jack's influence), never do a thing that warranted punishment from hornigold. however, given his trauma & hallucination-hornigold's behavior in the gravy basket, i think it's very possible that ed simply suffered other, more "creative" punishments under hornigold. & to that end, given ed's clear discomfort with violence, inflicting violence, especially on someone he was close to, would be a punishment in itself for ed.

what's more is that if we allow that perhaps ed was a gifted sailor & pirate who eventually excelled enough be appointed hornigold's quartermaster/first mate, it would then become part of ed's duties to dole out the punishments — including floggings. & at this point i think that you can see where i'm going with this.

in my mind, one of the reasons for the discrepancy in their flogging scars could be because izzy "took" ed's flogging punishments under hornigold's orders. while ed was the one holding the whip, it was absolutely meant to be punishment for both of them, with the dual purpose of punishment & helping to make ed "toughen up."

but what hornigold likely didn't know is that izzy is a masochist who actually likes the pain. & izzy is also an "if i can't be useful who am i" ass bitch who sees taking a flogging from & for ed as an act of service, & the responsibility of being the one to take on pain for him as a kind of intimacy. he's a fucked up lil guy who processed it in a fucked up way, & he didn't hate it all nearly as much as ed did, even tho he was the one that ended up bleeding.

which means that once they broke off from hornigold & ed became captain & izzy became his quartermaster/first mate, the floggings would have likely stopped. because of course they did, because ed hated them. & actually, it would become izzy's job to dole out punishments to a disobedient crew member. but the thing is that if ed didn't order a flogging (which he wouldn't, because he hated them), then i just don't think izzy would willingly dole them out.

this could be a whole separate post (which i'm sure others have already made better than i could), but i don't think izzy enjoys handing out physical violence. we see him engage in physical violence only when he feels it necessary, & prefers, like ed, to hide behind the threat of violence wherever possible. in s1 we see him threatening violence, & delegating violence to fang & ivan, & even using the powers of the navy to apply violence (which he argues as being "a humane way of ending things" for stede). but aside from the duel with stede & one light smack to black pete's head which doesn't appear to hurt & is played for laughs, he does nothing to personally harm anyone in s1 — an important distinction i think for someone whose last name is literally hands. & i'm firmly in the camp of thought that izzy is not a sadist, does not particularly enjoy inflicting violence, & does not want to be the person holding the whip. he would do it, if ed ordered it of him. but ed doesn't, so he doesn't.

so then we get to the referenced post & what is, to me, the ultimate question here : why then is izzy wearing the flogger during the kraken era, given that it was nowhere to be seen in s1 & does not stay after the kraken is gone? why does it come back out during the kraken era if izzy doesn't use it?

well, this could be many things. some people have pitched that ed started using it on izzy himself, but i'm not personally feeling that. ed doesn't like to hurt izzy, he only does it when he feels trapped or pushed into it, & flogging izzy would have been a traumatic thing for him to endure while on hornigold's ship. instead, i think that making izzy carry the whip is a way of ed calling out izzy's "weakness." in 1.10, izzy essentially called ed weak ("namby pamby"). in izzy's mind this meant that ed is no longer capable of inspiring fear & obedience in the crew, & thus incapable of keeping them safe. but what ed heard was "you are being too openly emotional &, crucially, not violent enough."

but ed is one of the only people that knows that izzy has a similar aversion to violence as he does. so ed making izzy carry the whip (which, i'm compelled to repeat, it would be izzy's duty as first mate to hand out punishments, including floggings) is like a constant reminder to izzy that he could use it on the crew, it's even his duty to use it on the crew. yet he won't. it's ed saying if i'm weak, then so are you. it's ed saying you want to be this? then be it, & making him confront the fact that he won't. it's ed daring izzy to do what he did, what izzy is now telling him to do again, & izzy failing to rise to his challenge. it's ed making izzy carry around a reminder of the simple fact that if ed is weak, then izzy is weak too.

the spectre of blackbeard, which izzy says was the both of them, was essentially a blanket threat of violence they used to protect themselves. & if you accept my backstory & headcanons for them, then when framed against the floggings that ed was forced to deliver unto izzy in their youth, we can see blackbeard as a through-line not only for the floggings of the past but for violence & piracy itself — something that izzy doesn't particularly like any more than ed does, but clings to out of fear long after ed was ready to be rid of it all.

“Oh, come on now, Izzy.” Stede huffs as he positions the makeshift sled on top of the large, somewhat steep snowy hill. “Where’s the harm in a little fun? We’re pirates, aren’t we? And the pirating life is full of all sorts of dangers and risks! How can this be any worse?” Because he was Stede Bonnet. And Stede had quite the way when it came to getting himself hurt. He was a man that did things he really probably shouldn’t. He was a man that thought he could something when he really probably couldn’t. And didn’t. And right now, it was all about having fun!

okay i'm genuinely confused by this. chicago fire and grey's anatomy and bones and criminal minds and chicago med all have episodes of the same length (approx 40-45 mins). so can someone please explain to me how chicago med fails constantly to give us more than ten minutes of the characters' personal lives each episode. how is that possible

It's framed as a character experiencing trauma, yes, but i really think that character is Ed. He just said he doesn't want to do fucked up things like that anymore, but now he has to. If you saw the scene by itself, you might think Izzy is the victim, but in the context of the series he is definitely not. Izzy is an abusive sub.

Anon, tell me something, what power does Izzy have over Ed? I have some things to say about the rest of what you said but I really feel like we gotta focus on this 'abuse' allegation.

What power does Izzy hold over Ed? Socially? Physically? Emotionally? He may have some level of societal power over him, given that he's a white man and Ed is not but, like, so's half the ship. So's Stede. And Izzy doesn't use that power over Ed anyway.

'Oh, but he sicced the navy on him!' Ed wasn't supposed to be there. Izzy tried to get him off the ship before they got there.

Also, Izzy is a pirate. A known pirate and Blackbeard's first mate. Do you think, white man or no, he'd have had any bargaining power over Ed's fate at the hands of the navy if he wasn't doing Chauncey a favor by giving him Stede? The only reason they were willing to let Ed go is because Chauncey was in charge and he wanted Stede more than he wanted Blackbeard. If Chauncey hadn't been there, or had seen a bigger picture, they would have all been hanged. All. Including Izzy.

Other than that? Izzy has no power over Ed. The crew like Ed and hate Izzy, even Fang and Ivan. Ed is the only reason Izzy isn't anchored at the bottom of the ocean by the end of ep 9. He didn't even have to do or say much of anything, just ask Izzy for tea, and the rest of the crew let Izzy go. They like Ed.

Physically? Ed's bigger than him. Izzy may be 'the world's best swordsman' but like, in a fight? I'd put my money on Blackbeard. Hell, I'd put my money on Ed. In a swordfight I'd put my money on Ed. Izzy doesn't want to hurt Ed. He doesn't want to kill him. The whole point of everything he does is to keep him (and himself by proxy) alive.

Emotionally? Probably the closest to be honest, but still, not quite. Cause, here's the thing, Ed ignores Izzy. A lot. Even (and especially) when it comes to important stuff. He's dismissive over Izzy's frustration and confusion over their lost crew and of Izzy's concern about the Spanish intending to kill them. He fully could have told him he already had a plan but he didn't because he wanted to re-assert his own authority and genius. He wasn't trying to impress Izzy (Stede and crew? Yeah, not Izzy tho.) he was reminding him why he's the boss.

His insults don't hold weight. If Ed was being emotionally abused by Izzy don't you think he might have had a different response to Izzy's 'You're just an insane, unpleasant, shell of a man who's merely posing as Blackbeard'? Like, it might have cowed him and he'd be apologetic? Or it might have triggered him into anger and violence instead of a teasing smirk and a 'That's Blackbeard, I'm Stede, remember?'?

He can't even manipulate Ed because Ed is gonna do what he wants regardless. 'I don't think he's worth your time.' 'He doesn't want to meet.' 'Seemed to [know who you are], yeah.' 'You can "suck eggs in hell" were his exact words, I believe.' All attempts to get Ed to not try and meet this guy, all failed.

So how, Anon, with this extreme lack of power in all aspects with regards to Ed, is Izzy in any position to be his abuser?

He's an asshole. They all are. They're fucking pirates.

He's toxic. They all are. They're fucking pirates.

But he is fundamentally incapable of being an abuser to anyone aboard the Revenge, let alone Ed, because he doesn't have the power to be an abuser.

Now, as to the rest of this.

You think Ed, who 'loves a good maim', who is depressed because he's lacking 'drama and chaos' in his life of 'being the best at piracy', who is upset that, when they see Blackbeard's flag, people surrender, that Ed, is the one who is traumatized by that experience? Not, say, the person who the traumatic violence is being inflicted upon?

Anon, did we watch the same show?

'To be honest it can be a bit of a drag. I don't know if I wanna go back to the old days. Just, drinking rum all day and biting the heads off turtles, making some poor bloke eat his own toes as a laugh.'

That's not 'I don't want to do fucked up things anymore.', Anon. That's 'I find these things boring now.'. It's kind of why 'What makes Ed happy is [Stede]' is important? Because Stede is novel. He's new. Ed isn't bored with him. Even the things he's used to that feel boring now don't when he's with Stede because he gets a new perspective through Stede. Anyway, I digress, the point is: Ed's not traumatized by the 'fucked up things', he's bored by them because they've become monotonous and he doesn't have to try anymore.

'Now he has to.' Says who? Izzy? The man who was about to get tossed off the ship tied to an anchor before Ed came back? The crew was perfectly fine with turning the ship into a damn traveling circus, no maiming/murdering/plundering required.

Anon, I get it. I get it if Ed is your favorite character, and maybe you project on him a little, so it hurts to see people say he's a bad person but like, he's Blackbeard. He's a bad person. Doesn't mean he's not relatable. Doesn't mean he's not likeable. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy him as a character. But relatability and likeability and being a good character does not a 'poor abuse victim' make. He's responsible for his own decisions. He's responsible for his own actions.

'If you saw the scene by itself, you might think Izzy is the victim,' I have seen the series, several times over, in its entirety, Anon. I have the context, Izzy is the victim in this scene. And Ed is not a victim of Izzy in any context.

Izzy the character is beloved and by the writers and within the show. If they wanted him to suck and be unloved they would've directed Con differently or cast a different actor. Con didn't even audition for Izzy, Jenkins saw his audition for another character and asked him to read for Izzy instead. Your hate of Izzy is biasing you to authorial intent and ruining the show for you, not the other way around.

You are free to your opinion, so are the folks who worked on the show, as am I.

This is obviously in response to this post I just made earlier, but, as I literally said in that post: I know.

I am aware that the people who worked on this show liked the character and wanted to do a redemption for him. And just as you accuse me of being blinded by my Izzy-Hate, they (and you) can be blinded by Izzy-Love, there is no subjective metric to see which side is more "correct." I simply expressed an opinion that his redemption was rushed.

I never bash Con's portrayal of the character. I never say he did his job incorrectly. I never even say that Izzy shouldn't get a redemption arc. I also never go and tell people they are wrong when they post happy things about Izzy, even though I don't like him.

People are allowed to like his character, I even acknowledge that in the tags under "I know I'm not an Izzy-Enjoyer so it's not catered to me. I know some people are excited this is how it's working out. Good for them." I'm happy you seem to be enjoying how the show is handling his character, congratulations, I wish that was how I felt about it, it'd be nice.

As I also state that those are just my barebones opinions being posted and I am currently writing up more while I rewatch to explain myself further, in which I do look into Izzy as a character deeper than "he was an asshole in S1" for your information.

But my biggest point is that it felt rushed from where we left off in Season 1 and I wish we'd been given the screen time to explore more of that part in-between the seasons where the crew makes the decision to be more open to him. I just wanted more development and evidence of growth, a reason for Jim to have accepted him as an important member of the crew, a reason for Frenchie to have comforted him like he did.

We didn't get that. And maybe it's the fault of the cast and crew having too much fun with each other they've gotten a little divorced from the events of season 1, maybe it's the fault of the studio not giving them enough time to show it even if it was scripted and had to be cut to fit in the episode amount, maybe it's no one's fault.

But, I went through the trouble to even tag that post "Izzy Critical" so folks who do like him have the option to block the phrase if it improves their experience on the internet. Feel free to try that if it'll help you. But I am going to continue expressing my opinions and analysis on shows I like, because it's fun and I love this medium of storytelling.
