An island, a regatta, and a tile

This is the beautiful Izaro island:

Located near the coast, nowadays it's a deserted island that has become a reservation for birds. Legend goes that the towns of Mundaka and Bermeo had been fighting for years since both thought the island should belong to them; neighboring village Elantxobe decided to be a unbiased judge in the regatta that would decide where the island belonged to: the winner could claim Izaro as its own. The time to start rowing would be the first singing of the cock.

Bermeo won the regatta, but Mundakans accused them of lighting up bonfires to make their cock sing earlier and have an advantage. Be it as it may, everybody accepted the result and from then on Izaro island belongs to Bermeo.

Every July 22nd the people of Bermeo set sail to the island and, before its shores, the mayor throws a tile to the sea saying: "Honaino heltzen dira Bermeoko itsuginak", which means "The leaks of Bermeo reach up here". Tiles, leaks?? Yes, because in Basque tradition, a house didn't end in the walls but in what eaves protected. This way, Izaro is metaphorically below the roof of Bermeo.

After this ceremony, the citizens of Bermeo keep on their celebration in Mundaka and Elantxobe, where the mayors give their makila to the mayor of Bermeo, naming them mayor for this special day.

It's an amazing day of fraternity and joy for all the inhabitants of these three fishermen towns, and the hundreds that visit them on this day!!

this week, in the spanish singing program operación triunfo, they sung escriurem, a song by catalan singer miki núñez - more specifically, they sung the version of the song he did with basque singer izaro, in catalan and euskera.

in operación triunfo it was sung by chiara, who is from menorca and thus speaks the menorquín dialect, very different from miki's barcelonese one (i don't speak catalan and still noticed the changes from the original to chiara's one); and martin, from the metropolitan area of bilbo (specifically getxo). for what i've seen people comment, his town doesn't really have many basque speakers, and his dialect is the one they learn at school, the most neutral one. izaro is from gipuzkoa (more specifically from mallabia) so i imagine they have different dialects as well, i haven't listened enough to the bilingual version to really get the differences but i'm sure a more trained ear will be able to do so!

Putting him here too because I absolutely love him

The courtesy of my partner irl (and my partner in crime when working on this comic), This is the design of Izaro, an irrational monster from our horror themed project. His mind is an echo of the person he used to be, and he's very irritable and prone to violent outbursts. After becoming a monster, his being is reduced to repeating the motions of his previous self, but instead of performing body modifications, his four arms perform grotesque art with sinew and flesh of anything unfortunate enough to cross the threshold of his lair.
