(Apologies this is long and rambley)

So ive been thinking on a peer-made trait-based 'diagnostic model' (not for disorders but neurodiverse traits), rather than the way the DSM and ICD do it and what that would look like and if it would be a good idea to propose as an alternative that focuses the patients unique experiences over theorized model boxes with misleading names.

Ive been growing increasingly discontent with how the ICD and DSM both categorize disorders, and the completed alternate models ive seen that already exist are not much better honestly, and worse for my specific brainfuckery. The alternate models that only focus on one section are just that- focused on one specific experience. Monotropisim as an alternate autism model can never be fully realized in the bubble it exists as a theory in. Plurality has like 50 different theory models and half of them aggressively ignore common reported experiences because they don't work with their unverified personal gnosis theory of everything, and the other half are likewise mostly incomplete. Trauma/cause-based models ignore genetic/from birth issues as a known cause of mental illness/developmental disorder and also consider everything trauma to the point of diluting the term.

I figured the best option would be to group traits by perceived experiences or related phenomena, with overlap, and the best way to do that accurately would be to make the 'diagnostic codes' combinable infinitely. (ex- a category that is 'unusual sensory experiences' with synthesia, hypo and hyper sensitivity to stimuli, needing to regulate with the sensory system (stimming) to high degrees, hallucinations of any kind, voice hearing(would also go under the plural category when consistent and personlike in presentation), visual snow, etc and each trait is a unique string of characters you can stack under the category string to create a larger string that describes your experiences quickly and concisely).

(The groupings are still all up in the air and id want to get a lot of perspective before cementing it, but I do want to put synthesia and hallucinations and visual snow all together because they are adding a Weird experience and its sensory based stuff others cannot perceive)

And then I realized that this is just the Geek Code but for neurodiversity,,

Im STILL not sure if that makes it a bad idea or not honestly.

On one hand the way the DSM and ICD are set up is NOT actually that great, and being able to shorthand a list that describes things better and doesnt pathologize people as having 'asshole liar personality disorder' or whatever would be fantastic, on the other it is also clunky, people are gonna be pissed about how I am categorizing things contrary to how the DSM and ICD group things (autism and schizophrenia and plurality are all holding hands and kissing with tongue), and it may more strongly encourage people to share very private information online via sharing their string code of every last neuroweirdness they have (which I do NOT want people doing for safety reasons).

So I just went 'hm, whos a cool antipsych person who may have more insight than I do about trying to make a peer-made description system for those who dont want to use the DSM or ICD to describe their experiences', and I thought of you, so thoughts? Is it feasible? Is it a good idea to try? I have like 500 million projects and I REALLY shouldnt add a new one of this magnitude, but I feel like its an important idea to at least float around first.

Hey anon! My answer got pretty long, so I'm going to put it under the read more.

I actually know a few people doing something like this--the founding director of Neuromancers started a project like this (not much has been happening with it lately, bc everyone is so busy with other organizing commitments and life, but if we ever get back to it i'm really excited about it. you could join the discord for Neuromancers and ask about the project if you want to join). I'm a known DSM hater and think that both the DSM and ICD and most biomedical models of mental illness as well as the "evidence based" processes of diagnosis are so fundamentally flawed, oppressive, and are in no way culturally relevant to the vast majority of people. a lot of us are still going to use that terminology as a shorthand because it's the most accessible and understandable in our current society, but that doesn't necessarily mean we all like it or agree with the way it's formulated in the DSM.

Honestly, I'm always a big fan of mad/mentally ill/neurodivergent people creating more ways of understanding ourselves and creating more resources for us to use. I think that there's never going to be one right model that works for every experience or than can encompass everyone. And I think that there's so much value in really deconstructing and dismantling the DSM--understanding exactly how disorders are currently categorized, the evidence behind it, the lack of evidence behind it, what clinicians and researchers are saying about these diagnoses, how we actually experience these diagnoses in practice, how diagnoses change through history, things like that. It can be super crucial to build our own understandings of just how these diagnoses were shaped in the first place so that we can understand what it would mean to dismantle and build alternative models that feel more affirming for us. I think your idea of trying to group more by traits rather than strict disorder criteria is something that might resonate with a lot of people!

that being said, i think that it is such a large and difficult project and also something that is almost impossible to make universal--there are so many factors going into everyone's experience with madness/mental illness/neurodivergence, and different labels are going to resonate with different people for different reasons. it's hard to predict what language or models will catch on with different people, and not all types of language or models are accessible to everyone. i guess for me i just think it can be helpful to go into projects like this without the expectations that this will necessarily be able to replace the DSM for everyone, and instead thinking more about how this can be a valuable tool for providing more options and ways of thinking about madness/mental illness/neurodivergence! even if it doesn't work for everyone or is only applicable to certain types of traits and variations, i think that this type of creation of knowledge is so, so valuable. i hope that makes sense!

some other related concepts that your ask reminded me of was @bioethicists principles of liberatory antipsychiatry. Charlie identifies the right to your own explanatory model as a key principle of liberatory antipsychiatry, and that liberatory antipsychiatry should affirm and build upon those individual models, and respect that as a way of healing. I think that's a really important insight, and to me makes a lot of sense. We all have the right to draw from our own experiences + minds, as well as use existing knowledge, science, and disability community experience in order to create alterative labels, models, and frameworks for our madness/mental illness/neurodivergence. I honestly feel like I've created my own hyperspecific model of madness for my own bodymind, and that framework has been super helpful for figuring out how to live with my madness. Idk how helpful it would be for anyone who isn't me, but having my own particular explanatory model was crucial for helping me heal.

It also reminds me of the way this really amazing peer support network for people living with schizophrenia in Japan called Bethel House, who developed a framework for radical peer support and healing. This article talks about the concept of tōjisha-kenkyū, which in English would get translated as something like "self directed diagnosis" or maybe "political education," and it seems kind of similiar to English concepts about self diagnosis.

"Self-reflection is at the heart of this practice. Tōjisha-kenkyū incorporates various forms of reflection developed in clinical methods, such as social skills training and cognitive behavioural therapy, but the reflections of a tōjisha don’t begin and end at the individual. Instead, self-reflection is always shared, becoming a form of knowledge that can be communally reflected upon and improved. At Bethel House, members found it liberating that they could define themselves as ‘producers’ of a new form of knowledge, just like the doctors and scientists who diagnosed and studied them in hospital wards. The experiential knowledge of Bethel members now forms the basis of an open and shared public domain of collective knowledge about mental health, one distributed through books, newspaper articles, documentaries and social media." (Japan's radical alternative to psychiatric diagnosis, Satsuki Ayayais and Junko Kitanaka, ).

Anyway, thought I'd share those things to sort of point you in the direction of other people thinking about madness outside of the DSM. if you end up doing any more thought or creation for this idea, def feel free to share with me! I love seeing all the ways people take apart the DSM and build our own knowledge, and would love to keep updated.

The problem comes down to not beeing able to move effectivly thorough files just like in hacking *sections tag to divide the web-site

-now the plan is to alter the json file to allow me permisson to the image folder after the link didnt work else play with bash for other alterations to the file In Unix-based systems like Linux and macOS, the user can use the “sudo” command to run the command with administrative privileges. In Windows, the user can right-click the Command Prompt or PowerShell and select “Run as administrator”.

18)ToDo list I got it to work but the trade off was all my linux files got deleted,therefore I'm starting over.

the first project is the simple todo list,I wwant to make this one nicer than the first one I did I plan on adding css and java script so it workes the inistal layout I want is a decorated background with a list that takes off taskes that are finished moving said task fromn one side of the list to the other side of the list This issue I;m currently having is an html issue. From doing some projects the issue I have is always a small technincal detail or syntax issues. The more boxes better control so the issue is what technicallity do I need to insure my list transfer infomation as well as takes info in -I have no idea how to get the program to hold onto input value,then display it.Only thing holding me from finishing right now -I think the problem is I didn't add a display box for the code Where I'm at: Have a basic setup for the website -I need my info to be taken in by the display box -then displayed on the website,once task is done it adds itself to the second half of the website 1)header 2)box1 inital info original diplay 3)box2 where finished task lays -I need display boxes javascript not linking to html page,this was the hurdle that has been fucking me over all day. While syntax is correct the program still hasn't worked problem fro the past reoccured asked for permisson for the javascript file,first it said it didn't exist then I needed permission I still can't get that syntax correct for the terminal

6/01 -since I couldn't get the javascript to work and I restarted all the files in my linux folder my next course of action was to delete vs and try my luck with another ide,plans were holted after putting in my javascript in my repl.it finding out my syntax was indeed wrong

-but now i'm not so sure becasue I tried another basic web design program from youtube with correct syntax and it didn't load correctly somehow I think it's my computer at this point -after re-opening the apllication 2/3 of it worked -this time javascrirpt and html,not css -like with the to do list css,html not javascript -I feel like giving up on full stack development but I have learned to much to not have an Idea on what needs to be done.I can vividly describe and analyze the problem just can't put it together

I am going to start app development on vs and come back to full stack development

6/10 After downloading the framework .Net and discovering the difference between visual studio code and visual studio I wanted to develop at least one of the each programming application made possible with the framework(including machine learning/ai) including but not limited to Flutter development. currently struggling to understandings of the sync capabilities of git hub with visual studio code( what I have) also I saw the flutter development intro video I am really just out of the woods intermediate of beginner and am steadily heading to intermediate currently stuck on trying to finish this web application tutorial terminal commands for web application,branch work

therefore you and me post-production notes (or: murphy’s law as a project that has been two years in the making)

ive had this idea for ‘therefore you and me’ and Fritz ever since i first played CindPhenon. nothing ever fell into place until i played Evermore though, so here we are!

drafting this project was pretty easy tbh (see: hubris). the parallel imagery and everything about the lyrics was right up my alley aha.

fun thing with the lyrics: TadanoCo uses ‘要る (iru)’ in the line ‘Which do you want (iru)? Or do you want neither (iranai; aka negative form of ‘iru’)?’

‘ 要る ‘ as a verb can mean ‘to be wanted’ or ‘to be needed’.

hence, the line can also be read: ‘Which do you need? Or do you need neither?” or any other variation of the verb’s usage.

it’s halfway through drawing the lineart that murphy’s law began. 1) i drew ~15 panels on the wrong dimensions, and had to redraw them all (lol), re-grey tone (LOL), and re-ink (LOLOL). it was not a fun three days.

then i lost momentum because of lunar new year (happy late lunar new year btw! happy year of the ox :”) )

anyway: the moment i regained momentum for the project again, i hit a roadblock in the form of overconfident, sloppy drafting (see: hubris is my downfall).

because of the lack of clear drafting for certain panels (and changes to previous panels), i had to redraft two different sections of the PV while keeping in mind that there was the bridge still to be drafted. fun !

i decided to simplify the bridge. can you believe it was supposed to be another animation. i can’t. so i scrapped it.

(slight tangent. Evermore’s release honestly cleared up a lot of uncertainty regarding the direction of the PV and whether or not to include Fritz’s mother (who I still fondly call Beatrice). im really happy the PV never came to fruition before Evermore’s release, as im not sure i would have done half as good a job without Evermore’s content.)

back to the hubris of proceeding with a messy draft - there was a lot of push and pull internally for me as to how much i should keep to the original PV and how much i should just put my spin on things. i ended up doing a bit of half-and-half, i think.

but really, it only delayed things as i ended up redrafting and having multiple drafts of certain panels haha//

the last two choruses were honestly my favourite parts to draw. the shift from Varg’s clothes and colours to Fritz, Fritz’s acceptance of Varg and the soft way Varg looks at Fritz (and no one else). there’s something cathartic about acceptance and acknowledgement. i think that’s what i aimed to really capture.

also: in between drawing all the panels, murphy’s law 2) my Evermore itchio game file ? got deleted off my computer ?

it’s a very old, barely functional brick so im lowkey unsurprised but at the same time it was a crazy experience and setback when i needed to reference certain scenes. oh, and Steam decided to not download Evermore too. i still haven’t fixed that one. haha. ha.

i have screenshot posters to thank for uploads of certain CGs, although im still pretty sure its best not to post a ton of those publicly at one shot?

also, i had to scrap the recreation of the famous ‘did you love Varg’ scene because of this aha. looking back now, i think it worked out.

(another tangent: using referencing as an excuse, i actually took the opportunity to replay Fritz’s route for the third time. i ended up checking nothing at all and falling in love with the masquerade scene again.)

up till the very end, im still not sure if everyone got that the line “You are love itself.” was meant to be said by Lucette to Fritz. i colour-coded Lucette with her own unique blue for the PV, which was the same hue as the line. i hope that it got across, aha.

with that said, video production was a whole entanglement in and of itself. i think murphy’s law really took up a hammer and swung hard at this stage.

timing was actual hell. im usually not this bad at it, but this project in particular was tricky bc TadanoCo uses a lot of background beats that aren’t overt, which his PV also matches - i think? or maybe im just not good at recognising beats from lack of video/music production haha//

hence there were certain scenes i was stuck at and kept revising because i wasnt clear where the beat was meant to be, what transitions i should use, and when the transitions should be.

subtitling was actually really fun! until i rendered my first version and realised all the subtitles were completely off and blurry.

turns out my project properties were different from my video properties, hence the off-alignment. huh. didnt know those were Actual Things(tm).

also, quick tip to all vid-making amateurs like me out there: you may have to double the dimensions of the font’s media properties if you dont want them to come out fuzzy. another thing i didnt know lol.

anyway all this lead to: me needing to spend another evening to redo subtitles. haha. it was not a fun two back-to-back 3am nights + extra evening afterward.

in between all this was countless rendering tests to guess-and-check what’s causing numerous errors in the video btw.

and with those rendering tests came: glaring mistakes in the panel art that i only now spotted and had to fix, and refix, and refix again. then reimport into sony vegas, put it into the video, render and double check if it’s alright. rinse and repeat countless times ! haha ! PV making is fun !

i think i nearly redid a certain scene with the exact same panels once. like i said: not a fun two 3am nights.

that said: i dont know how all this technical issues (and more) popped up and were resolved over two 3am nights and one evening. im not about to question it either.

at this point: panel art - fixed ! subtitling all redone ! render works fine, everything checks out.

i make the mistake of uploading it directly to yt instead of leaving it unlisted first.

murphy’s law 3) when im watching the vid on yt, the yellow parts in the second verse were completely unable to be seen.

panic put it on unlisted. people are already watching it and leaving (very sweet) comments. panic delete it.

btw if you’re one of the first three commenters reading this: thank you for the quick response !! it means a lot and made me really flustered in a good way :”))

cue me re-colouring those scenes, redo-ing the section and oops, is that a panel in the masquerade scene where Fritz literally is missing his mask ???

i think i lost my mind entirely at this point. from then on i was fueled by spite to complete this cursed project.

at thereforeFINAL.mp4, (version five of the full PV, version maybe 10-11 of all the rendered videos, including tests) finally. finally it is done.

i upload it.

the end !

(except, not really. because here you are at post-production notes detailing the worst luck i’ve ever had with PV making.

i learnt a lot from this though, and honestly on hindsight i should have learnt all these from my first PV but nothing went wrong at this magnitude so i kinda just...shelved it aha//

but really, im relieved it turned out well, and that i took the time to redo scenes until i was satisfied. for a PV that’s been waiting in the background for two years now, i think this is the least it deserves.

if the comic about Fritz and Varg (which i referenced in one of the last choruses, i wonder if anyone caught that?) was meant to be a love letter to Fritz’s route, i think this PV ought to be a tribute to the character himself.

although - hm, this isn’t quite as good a tribute to Fritz as it is to his route, maybe? i don’t know, haha ! maybe it’s just myself wanting to make excuses to create more for him//

i was thinking of continuing on about the PV and it’s significance to Fritz and Varg, but hm. maybe not on this post. maybe some other one, some other time.

but at it’s core, at it’s simplest, most raw - i think i just wanted to explore what it means to Fritz to ‘want’ and to ‘need’ with this PV.

How do you feel about Rogue One's tower archive?

Oh, this has been on my mind (no joke) since the movie came out. Mind you, I’ve only watched the movie and haven’t read the book so there may be details in there that aren’t here. I’m planning to listen to the audiobook soon.

I love the concept of it. I love how utilitarian it is for its purpose of having secret, controversial plans and documents from the Empire. There’s a giant vertical structure containing what amount to hard drives (but are actually tape drives! more on that later) in an assumedly well-categorized system as we saw in the movie.

Now, mind you, I love how it worked out. It just did. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have questions or find faults in this.

Taking a cue from BSG and having nothing networked?

We can assume that the drives are not accessible to computers within the control area (or throughout the rest of the base). If they were (and, you know, power were still available), I have little doubt that Jyn and Cassian would have had K-2 transfer the plans to a separate disk (or perhaps internal memory) and gone from there. Instead, they had to physically locate the drive, remove it, and take it with them on their trip to the dish.

I can see how this would be beneficial. A member of the Empire who had sudden sympathies for the Rebellion wouldn’t be able to access any plans from a simple workstation. Droids could not be reprogrammed to look for the plans from a remote socket (as we’ve seen in Rebels with Chopper being reprogrammed and remote controlled).

But I also feel like this would lead to a slightly less-than-efficient workplace. Think about it. If you needed to check on a detail, you’d have to go to the archive, get the plans manually (and you probably had to have sought out someone who has the correct permissions), load it into a console, and go from there. Then reverse the process.

Doesn’t that seem just a bit inefficient to you? No? Just me? Oh.

Encryption? Is that a thing?

No, really. This baffles me.

We see in the movie that Jyn grabs the drive, takes it up to the dish, has a bit of a struggle with Krennic, and then jams the drive in to a receptacle and calls it a day. The plans begin to transmit immediately without so much as a confirmation or request of access.

UH. UH. UHHHHHHH.

HOW DID THIS SYSTEM GET DESIGNED AND APPROVED

I have encryption on my drive and I don’t store nearly as sensitive files as the plans to a superweapon. But after obtaining the drive, there’s no concern about needed a special code or a keycard that would decrypt the drive during that session. Did the Empire really assume that just since they’re on Scarif, they can trust all their systems no matter how they’re accessed? Then why weren’t the drives networked?

I honestly don’t have an answer or solution for this. I just wonder how this could be.

Why were these drives physically so freaking huge?

The easiest reasoning would be that, as with actual real-world technology that is military-grade, there’s a lot of protection on these devices from shock, sand/dust/dirt, water, radiation, and so on. We can easily come to the conclusion that the size of the drive is not the way it is because of the storage requirements of the plans.

(And guess what, my assumptions were right! I hadn’t cracked open the Rogue One Visual Guide until having written this and the following paragraph.)

The Death Star plans are more than likely the most complex set of plans that the Empire had stored in the Citadel Tower. Think about it. You have a 120 kilometer wide space station and plans that detail every room, every floor, every section and subsection. They detail everything from weaponry placements to power couplings to water and sewage pipes. And it’s not just the final plans. The Visual Guide says the data tape has the earliest “exploration” plans (more than likely as seen in Episode II) to the final schematics. We can also assume that any communication about it is stored in there as well.

Sidenote: also in the Visual Guide, it says that the data tape had a capacity of 512 million exanodes. What are exanodes? Who the hell knows! Other than a billion billion nodes if the Star Wars universe uses the same numerical prefixing system that we do, we don’t know what a single node can store. A node could be the equivalent of a single bit (meaning on or off), a single byte (storing a single character), or something more because I would assume Star Wars is beyond traditional computing and is definitely using something equivalent or better than quantum computing.

But what confounds me is why they used such a physically large (and potentially volatile) tape drive inside the enclosures. At the end of Rogue One when Vader is storming through the Rebel Cruisers, the plans are transferred to a super slim data card from the ship’s computer that then carries us into Episode IV. How did the Rebellion get all the data from this giant drive onto this tiny card? We can assume that the Rebellion’s technology limits are not nearly as high as the Empire due to lack of resources so that’s not the answer.

Perhaps the answer as to how the plans moved from a large tape drive to a slim card is as easy as Jyn only transferred the final plans to the Rebellion and didn’t bother with the conversations or earlier plans. And this is probably the answer as further along in the timeline, there are no mentions of other valuable data used from the transfer such as security codes, planet locations, and so on.

How fast is the data transfer?

NOTE: Lots of hypothetical talk here, as everything is. And I can’t really make assumptions so this is mostly me wondering out loud.

Let’s hop back to Scarif’s surface for a moment. The plans couldn’t be transferred through the planetary shield normally. This is why the Rebellion used a Hammerhead corvette to send two Star Destroyers into the shield. The shield wasn’t taken down completely but the amount of energy and force it had to deflect from the impact of those ships made it attenuate enough where the signal from the dish on the planet could breach the shield enough and make a successful transfer to the ships in orbit.

As mentioned above, we’ll assume that only the final plans were transferred. In this scene, it took 33 seconds to transfer completely. We can assume this is in real time because while the scene plays between the surface and the ship, dialog continues at a normal pace. If you were transferring a completely full data tape, the bandwidth would be 15 million exanodes per second. That’s huge. But as mentioned above, I don’t believe that the entire of the tape being transferred.

We don’t know how much space each version of the plan took on the drive as well. Did the engineers have something similar to a git repository system where with each revision, only the parts that changed are uploaded? Or did a full set of plans get uploaded with each revision? With a project as complex as the Death Star, I’d go with the former. That means there could be hundreds of thousands of revisions stored.

So, really, I’ve got nothing on how fast the data transfer from that satellite is. This is just me rambling. Hope you enjoyed it.

No, this is something that annoys me. And I could be completely overthinking this because it’s not mentioned in the movie. But here I go.

Everybody knows you should have a backup of your data and then a backup of your backup. For something as critical the plans to your superweapon battle station, I hope to the maker that you didn’t just have those plans in that one location.

The Empire has essentially unlimited resources. Practically unlimited planets they could create data facilities on. Why they seemingly had the archives limited to just one planet is beyond my comprehension. They destroyed their own data facility that contained thousands of projects without so much as batting an eye. Tarkin gave the order and done. No blowback, no concerns, nothing. So perhaps there is a secondary data facility somewhere in the galaxy and I’m just ranting for no reason.

But I also wouldn’t put it past the Empire to have a single place for their data. After all, Tarkin didn’t give a damn about that small flaw that couldn’t possibly ruin his moment of triumph.

Above ground?

I get that you’re on an ocean planet and basically built on top of the majority of the land mass in that specific area. But you chose to build your facility above ground. The data tower is more than likely in the middle of that spire. That doesn’t worry you? Stop the ignorance of “nothing can get through this shield.”

Wouldn’t you rather take the precaution of building underground and making sure that water couldn’t possibly find its way in than have the risk of some ship crashing into the spire and destroying the entire archive? It wouldn’t even have to be an enemy. It could very well be a freighter that loses control on the approach to land.

I’m not going to attribute these as faults to the writers (though they probably are) but more to the stupidity of the Empire when it comes to making sure that they are secure. They are so large, it hurts and is practically their downfall. When you get large enough, you overlook these sorts of things. They probably have their justifications but for an Empire with practically unlimited resources, well…

FINAL EVALUATION

When i was told that the FMP was going to be based on Survive/Thrive my attention immediately went to a rogue like game. Because of their mechanics, they always tend to be a fight for survival in the beginning and as you get further into the game and you get more items it becomes more of a thrive situation and you can coast through the game enjoying the run you have built. I wanted to create this kind of atmosphere in my game but i never got to add in abilities into the game, instead i went for a game demo and the player feels like they need to survive from the beginning and as they get more comfortable with the controls they can have fun with it and thrive.

The research i have done in my project has been semi-consistent throughout the project, sometimes i would focus my efforts on developing the game and then the research posts would begin to lack but i feel that i have done sufficient research to back up my design choices and to show why i made these decisions, as they heavily influenced the game. Because most top down rogue likes control in the same manner, researching three of the most popular ones has given me insight onto what the players are looking for in that type of game, generally its difficulty and having to be persistent through a seemingly impossible task and so i wanted to portray this in my game but without being completely unforgiving, i wanted to allow progression at a slowed rate to keep the players playing the game once they have given it a try.

The primary research i did into playtesting my game was conducted through a questionnaire, i chose this method because it is a quick way to get immediate feedback from your audience to be put to use as soon as you find a general consensus within each answer. Using this method i did find out a lot about my game from a different perspective and i hadn’t really considered things that were suggested to me until i performed the research. I could have chose a different method such as a focus group and in that i could pitch ideas to the group and get them to bounce ideas between each other and back to me but i feel i made the right decision, but i could have possibly done both.

For secondary research i looked at similar products, what those games do that i can use as influence on my own game and how these features/aspects communicate with the player. For general game mechanics i looked at three of the most popular game in the rogue like community and explained their mechanics and what they did that was unique. I also looked at how the games similarities made each game more user friendly for the audience and how the unique features of each game gave the player something new when playing each game, and then from this i explain how i can use this information when developing my game by using mechanics that the community know and love and adding my own unique mechanics to give players a fresh feel and something new to play. I also looked at a similar product outside the rogue like genre in Dark Souls (FromSoftware, 2011)

During pre production i first created a Gantt chart so i could organise the work that i was going to do by order, so that I knew when i was going to what work. I believe that i had created the Gantt chart effectively and realistically but unfortunately, I seemed to neglect using it for the most part as i found that i wanted to be more flexible when i was doing my work and focusing on what needed doing because i felt that the Gantt chart didn’t have enough time for creating the game. Because of this i feel that i didn’t use the Gantt chart properly and ended up ignoring it altogether even after a halfway evaluation but i can understand its importance when creating a game because it keeps you to a schedule and focuses you throughout the development of the game.

Another part of pre production was completing the GDD and the proposal. As i am working in a group and am focusing on the coding element of development, I am limited to the sections mechanics and gameplay. This means that i will have to be really detailed so that i hit the grading criteria as i don’t have all of the sections to complete. For gameplay i talked about the console that the game will be played on, the controls that will be used and if there will be controller support, i also talked about the style of the game in terms of controls and how it is a classic twin-stick shooter in homage to the rogue like genre. For the mechanics i explained how the game is going to feature different elements for the player to interact with, for example an ability or going into buildings. I actually had a little trouble with this section and had to rewrite it because, originally, i wrote about mechanics in terms of code but i was told this was incorrect and that i should look into a book called level up by Scott Rogers where he explains what the term mechanics actually means and using this i rewrote the section. I am pretty happy with pre production as a whole but the only thing i would want to improve if i did the FMP again would be not to rush through the pre production just to get to production as i feel that has had a negative impact on the product as a whole because i didn’t properly plan out how i was going to make the game, i just started making it without making a proper plan aside from the research plan and Gantt chart.

Production is the section where i am equally proud of my work but also feel like ive let myself down because i wanted to create this huge project within the short space of time we had and created too much of an idea in my head without actually making all of it so i feel that its all gone to waste, but at the same time i am really happy with the way the game turned out in its current state because i only used GML to make the game without using any pre made attributes of game maker, i learned alot for future use and also got to put into practice some skills i learned previously. I documented every part of the games creation with skeleton code and screenshots in a production diary that also explains what each part of the code does to prove i know what i have created. There are some bugs that would really get on my nerves and i would spend alot of time trying to fix them with no avail and this would set me back in terms of the games development and i think this is why i didnt get alot more done than i wanted as i didnt account for bug fixing in my pre production, and would definately add a section into the gantt chart exclusively for that element in the future.

To conclude my final evaluation i think that, on a whole, i am proud of the work that i have done all things considered and i feel like i worked hard in everything from the research to the game itself and am throughly pleased with the way it turned out, but of course there are things that wish i had done differently or things that i wanted to do but never did as ive highlighted previously. I am particularly happy with my research because i actually really enjoyed carrying it out, it was really interesting to look more in depth at games ive played for years and find out things about them i never even considered, i also liked letting people play test the game and getting their feedback because i never really realised how satisfying it is to communicate well with the players of the game, in the sense that you make something you hope the players will understand and connect with and when you see it happen first hand it really drives you to keep working with the game and the players.

Over the course of my senior year in college, I've been hard at work on a visual novel dubbed Streams of Nurture. As both a passion project and academic piece, Streams of Nurture represents an interesting case study for transforming one of my most ancient interests, food production, into an interactive affair that combines the dramatic qualities of an entertainment title with a real-world topic characteristic of serious games. In other words, I wanted to leverage the concept of "learning through play" to create a game that felt both purposeful and engrossing.

With my project officially submitted to the Worcester Polytechnic Institute database, I can now share with you the report detailing the development cycle for the visual novel. Throughout the coming weeks, I shall be publishing a subsection of the paper penned for Streams of Nurture. Each part will focus on a particular design and production aspect of the game, from the way the storytelling was conceived to the iterative art process that governed the title's presentation.

This week's post in a series of design articles explains the general production cycle of Streams of Nurture. If you're interested in reading about the pre-production, narrative and audiovisual phases for my visual novel, feel free to peruse the first, second and third articles I published on my title’s development process.

NOTE: I didn't single-handedly develop the game. Although I handled the narrative design, coding and writing for Streams of Nurture, my partners Liam Miller and Dave Allen were wholly responsible for the art and audio respectively. As such, the pronoun "we" will be used to acknowledge their invaluable contribution to this project.

Project schedule

In terms of scheduling, Streams of Nurture shares some similarities with other projects conducted within and beyond WPI’s game design major, while still embodying its fair share of quirks. On one hand, most of the visual novel’s major development milestones were set and achieved throughout three academic quarters. However, the individual parts that constitute it (story, art, sound, and playtesting) were not built concurrently. Instead, each of us worked full-time on the project without taking any classes across two different academic quarters to plug in the major pieces, with the first half of the spring semester being dedicated to the polish pass.

For the narrative, Michel spent the entirety of Fall 2016 organizing the documentation created for the game’s story and subsequently writing the basic dialog that expounded details about the aquacultural process. The lines Michel penned also contained figments of his personality in the characters that he would further flesh out in future quarters since he wished to get the practical details in first before finding ways to trim it and make the writing tighter and more coherent. In short, he adopted an iterative approach to storytelling so that the revisions to the dialog would not affect the overall structure and pacing of the narrative he wished to impart.

As for the art, the process of designing, developing and polishing was roughly planned to fit within each quarter the team was working on the project. Fall 2016 was when ideas were being formed and set in stone for the following semester to collect photographs, produce drawings, complete the style transfer processes per each image and drawing, then finally polish what was needed. Liam was not officially registered for the project until the end of 2016, but given the project being dependent on just two people (at the time), he felt the earlier the team began work, the better. The busiest quarters were those consisting of developing and implementing the art (late Fall 2016 and early Spring 2017), given the abundant number of scenes and characters. The workload proved more intensive than anticipated, and lasted well into Spring 2017.

Source control and backups

To ensure that the work updated properly across different devices and would not get lost to hard crashes and corrupt drives, the team made use of a cloud-based BitBucket repository, using SourceTree as a Windows client (see Figure 40).

These tools allowed us to upload (“push”) and download (“pull”) changes to the visual novel’s script and assets, based on files stored in a BitBucket folder maintained on our PCs. As an additional precaution, the team and advisors regularly backed up the project folder on several flash drives kept in different locations to minimize the possibility of having our progress vaporized by a mangled repository.

Thankfully, the data for Streams of Nurture worked seamlessly with BitBucket and SourceTree, and we never encountered any issues that stalled development of our project.

Communication

Along with updating changes to the game’s script and audiovisual assets, the team also met at least twice a week throughout the 2016-17 academic year to report any progress with the art, writing and other design elements. Such meetings occurred between the students and advisors in the game design suite in Salisbury Labs on weekdays and solely among the developers at the Gordon Library on weekends.

During those gatherings, we brainstormed potential ideas for our game that could be incorporated further down the line, such as additional visual flourishes and subplots that would flesh out the characters even more (e.g. flashback sequences hinting at the protagonist’s hazy relationship with their dad). The team also relayed concerns about hitting particular milestones within the academic year, such as getting rid of all the placeholder art and polishing all of the character lines to make them sound more natural and dramatic.

Outside of the aforementioned meetings, the team also made use of the chat service Slack (see Figure 41) to share updates and comments that would affect the final version of the game, such as last-minute changes to the art and additional information on the salmon industry. The channel we created for our purposes (VN_MQP) included several sub-sections: design, general, look-and-feel, meetings, random and audio. This allowed us to keep the chat box clean and relevant, which led to faster responses to questions about Streams of Nurture’s condition.

Skeleton

During the fall semester, the entire team focused on building the visual novel from the ground-up using the research and references we documented to get a solid sense of how the game would look, sound, and feel as the player progresses through it.

Given the sheer size and scope of the project, we knew that we had to undertake an iterative approach to the development of our title. This meant that we first had to create rough versions of the art and script before we could polish everything so that they matched the vision we laid out from the beginning.

So before we got started churning out the audiovisuals and written content for the title, Professors Moriarty and Sutter sat down with us to discuss the step-by-step process we would go through in terms of creating the basic structure and design for Streams of Nurture. This skeletal framework (see Figure 42), which served as the substrate upon which we would plug in more polished versions of the artworks and dialog, was comprised of placeholder assets and scripted scenes that made the visual novel entirely playable from start to finish.

For the art, we made use of Photoshop to generate grayboxes that had the names of the asset and their (sub)directories explicitly baked onto them. These files would allow us to substitute finalized artworks for the blank images that initially corresponded to the background scenes in Streams of Nurture. This approach also applied to the characters themselves, who were depicted as front-/left-/right-facing black silhouettes standing in their respective onscreen positions.

Narrative-wise, the key was to incorporate as much relevant information about the different farming methods and techniques the player would be exploring (see Figure 43), as well as the various personalities inhabiting the game world. Macro and micro details about the aquacultural appliances such as the real-life Thermolicer and words denoting the kinds of emotions characters would feel rather than outright utter in the final game were par for the course in terms of producing functional dialog that advanced the plot, but had yet to possess more characteristic essence.

Having a skeleton from the outset proved most beneficial for future iterations of the game, as the team was able to make quick and effective modifications to the code without harming the visual novel’s overall story structure and artistic integrity.

Polishing

During the holiday break, the team decided to proceed to the next stage in the development process: the polish pass. With the placeholders having served their purpose of getting the title to work from a technical perspective, the time came for us to bring the narrative and artistic components of Streams of Nurture up to a level that would make it attractive to the average player all across the board.

In terms of dialog, the primary goal was to trim down any unnecessary lines and scenes that bogged down the pacing of the game and made the title feel bloated in parts. Not only that, but the team also wanted to alter the dialect for each of the characters so that they sounded more unique and convincing. Originally, their vernacular was too uniform and sophisticated for them to feel believable, instead sounding pretentious and unnatural. With the help of the character profiles, though, Michel was able to distinguish each individual from one another through their speech patterns and general demeanors (see Figure 44). The process of doing so took a little over two months to accomplish, and the result was a considerably leaner and meaner narrative that communicated information more concisely and, in some ways, wittily.

With the art, polishing backgrounds and characters came down to adjusting minor yet vital details about the subject matter of the scene, tending more specifically to what was being portrayed through the dialog, and of course cleaning up any abnormalities in the illustrations for the sake of achieving a more professional look. To elaborate upon this, any feature in the backgrounds that either did or did not belong in the scene was either added or removed. One mentionable polishing factor that came into play twice while working on the art were the tweaks and changes that Alter was making, which would often change their resolution output or manipulate their algorithms to fine-tune how style was transferred. These changes produced noticeable differences in stylized backgrounds before Alter updates and changes, making it mandatory to redo each of the images we had already finished. Other than that, cleaning a few drawings of character borders was one small yet vital part of the polishing process to produce the most appealing visual novel we could.

For sound and playtesting, Spring 2017 was when both components were being extensively worked on after several months of delay. Like the narrative and art, audio benefited from the same iterative process that defined much of the title’s development cycle. By adding and fine-tuning musical layers for the game’s main theme and sourcing references for the sound effects, Dave was able to put together a compact but potent soundscape that provided the right amount of atmosphere complementing the town of Duntale and its surroundings.
