you do not have to answer this!! I'm using you to confess my dubious feelings for the Percy Jackson series bc you also expressed like some weird feelings about it, and I kind of thought the series was untouchable bc of how much everyone I see fawns over it, and I have GOT to get this off my chest to someone who might get what I'm saying. But I have major issues with the writing/premise/series bc it's just feels so deeply colonized and it's bothered me since it FIRST came out and everyone in middle school and high school was reading it and teachers were assigning it. Like the whole premise for the Greek gods being in the US is that they follow Western "progress" and it completely disregards all the amazing things Indigenous did and our way of life, and also removes the importance of place-based culture for both Greek stories and Native peoples (like okay all the Greek stuff moved to the U.S. but wth happened to all our spiritual figures?? The story completelya cts like Native people weren't here and didn't have complex beliefs and ways of life connected to the land, and the gods were just free to take over here with no issues). As a mixed Indigenous kid it just rubs me wrong in all the worst ways and the academic systems love affair with Greek and Roman stuff and Rick Riordan's sheer popularity has been forcing this stuff in my face foreveeeerrrr 😭😭 I was surprised to see your tags about the fandom being weird before too tho since I don't interact with it, so I hope you don't mind this ask and just know I kinda feel the same way!! Ok thanks bye sorry for the rant.
BRO I HAVE HAD THIS RANT ON HAND FOR A LONG TIME ITS OKAY!!!!!!!!!
I THINK IF HEARD ABOUT THIS ACTUALLY. but you explained it way better. like when i first read percy jackson ok fine i was 11, i obviously caught onto the ableism and such but i did not catch onto this until i thought about it when i got older. you're super right. the whole thing about ww2 being caused by demigods was the weirdest shit ever i literally did not remember reading it until i read lightning thief again last year. why did hitler need to be child of hades. THAT IS QUITE LITERALLY HOW PERCY DESCRIBES HADES WHEN HE SEES HIM. LOOKING LIKE HITLER. then what you're saying how they move with the places that are the most progressive and basically take over..... like it's just ..... incredibly misplaced and insensitive.
but about the fandom being weird (its literally encouraged by riordan's book tbh), in heroes of olympus, hazel is a black girl from lousiana in the 1930s?? or 40s idk anyways i think she dies and then nico brings her back. whatever, everyone draws her lightskin and with orange hair, and super skinny, (which she's from louisana. shes darkskin and does not have "caramel" hair i hate white men sometimes.) and shes like 13 btw and in a relationship with frank whos like 16. weird as hell and everyone thinks theyre so sweet. and also rick cannot write meaningful young women. and especially not girls of color. like its WEIRD how piper is portrayed as some pick me girl she constantly feels the need to express shes not like the Aphrodite girls. and rick had to make it weird with aphrodite anyway by making them a whole stereotype of snobby boys and girls who love putting on makeup. they had drew, an asian girl & counselor of aphrodite, straight up mean to piper bc she likes jason. like for no other reason. drew only wants to participate and go on the quest because of jason. and other stereotypes like making leo, latine, be super flirty.
and lets really talk about how annoying annabeth was about the blondes are dumb stereotype because, girl we can talk about misogyny and people not letting you do things because of it, but lets also talk about how you are TWELVE, and the blonde stereotype is tired. i never liked annabeth, she was really tone deaf as someone whos half black. OH AND FRANK. they had this weird ass arc where they implied he was fat because of lack of confidence? like when he got confident he, lost weight... because of a blessing of mars? i dont even know.
like as i get older its more and more annoying to see it. i literally rolled my eyes when i saw rick talking about colorblind casting when people got mad about annabeth. he could of said anything else. how this could reconceptualize annabeth's arc around misogyny and now racism. and purposely alter her character to fit this new black annabeth. but no. people treat colorblind casting as a pinnacle of progressiveness.

Let’s not revise history clawdeen has always been lightskinned. Lightwashing her further isn’t okay but you can’t tell me clawdeen wolf is a dark skinned black girl. I would love it if she was but she’s not
Also I do think people need to appreciate g3 I’d the first time she’s ever been played by a black woman her og voice actor was white which is So Racist. A white woman putting on a fake blaccent to portray a sassy black girl? Die.
Frankly this is the blackest she’s ever been even if she is lightwashed. Not that it’s not a problem but thank god she’s not played by a white woman anymore
Now, who said she was darkskin? all we've been talking about is the act of making her lighter than she used to be and I think its weird that you're put off and sooo hung up at the thought of people implying that clawdeen was darkskin. why is there so much disdain that you had rush and say 'she was never darkskin 🙄' all because people said.... they've made her lighter?
the live action movie had her being portrayed by a racially ambiguous actress and the reboot dolls have lightened her EVEN MORE. and knowing that a lot of what was in the movie was carried over to the lore of the show and dolls proves that clawdeen is supposed to be lighter than she has been in the past
and people thinking clawdeen was darkskin is justified when in the movies she was darker than some of the dolls they produced for her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
just like sasha from bratz, she was made darker in the movies but her dolls sometimes came in different shades but she is clearly closer to howleen's tone than anything else
now right now im going to use stock images of clawdeen but its very clear that they are either trying to use lighting to make her lighter on purpose or she is genuinely now lighter than before so don't take my word for it but something is definitely something going on
(Image order: G3 Innovation series (2022), G3 Basics series (2022), G1 reproduction doll (2014), G1 School's Out (2011), G2 How do you boo? (2016))
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and you're right it is a good thing that clawdeen is finally voiced by a black woman but what people mean by 'lightskin-ifaction' is now that her skin is lighter her entire personality has changed that matches the idea that all lightskin girls are soft and delicate while darker skinned black girls are aggressive and rude and sassy. why couldn't she be darker and be shy and nerdy?
I just want to clarify i am very happy she is finally being called black and I don't hate clawdeen as character, but I am criticising mattel.
and monster high fans who are upset at the colourism have every right to brush this off, this isn't something petty like not liking the clothes the dolls are in like other fans are complaining about people should not have to accept acts of antiblackness just because they finally admit clawdeen is black (even though she is technically biracial which is even more colourist because they're really looking for a reason for clawdeen to be lighter.... how can a werewolf be half human half werewolf when THAT'S WHAT THEY ARE 😭)

does it change how u feel about him? /gen
oh absolutely not, i just know theres a lot of people who feel a quarter black isnt black enough, and itll make it harder to get through to those weirdos who are like trying to reinvent blood quantas because i guess they think this time itll work. here in the caribbean were way less strict about ancestry because the entire region is one huge melting pot of indo-, sino- and afro-caribbean people along with european ancestry so technically the largest ethnic group is mixed but we mostly call ourselves black. its weird to me because like, we acknowledge the fact that there is a generational trauma to blackness EXCEPT for whitepassing people.
like they obviously experience a privilege and it is definitely a distinct privilege from colorism but imo while its an advantage to have the choice to reject and dismiss your ancestry and family in exchange for an easier life that doesnt exactly sound like a white experience, yk? i feel like its more complicated than "you look white therefore you are white" and i dont get the black american obsession with gatekeeping blackness. i fully understand we dont want anymore rachel dolezals, believe me, but as someone who, despite being fully black, has been gatekept from blackness, i think its a bigger problem when people who are black are denied their own identity and experience. like why are you telling us certain activities are whites only? why are you segregating us on the white mans behalf?
i remember this girl, she was lightskin and had type 3 hair, asking what bonnets are for on tiktok, and she didnt speak aave, and it was really obvious to me that she was either neurodivergent or just didnt have much experience with other black people. but people saw her immediately as someone who resented her blackness and not someone whos experience with blackness is different to theirs asking a genuine question. she got a lot of hate from people telling her she was being condescending and she eventually responded with a video, holding back tears, explaining that she lived in alaska and moved around a lot and tiktok was basically her only access to her community.
like i think theres a conversation to be had about whitepassing privilege and about the privilege of "acting white" or "sounding white" as someone who has the latter, but these are not the same thing as being white. i definitely grew to resent my blackness but it wasnt because i felt superior, it was because i was either hated by people who thought i rejected it or loved by people who thought i rejected it, despite the fact that i was trying to embrace it in my own unique way. like i think this is an expression of white supremacy within our own community, and its part of the reason why the first step is often "you can be black and ____?!" you can be black and gay, black and trans, black and punk, black and whatever the hell you want to be, and express both at the same time, but we police how people can be black and therefore we dont get to see that. like i know for a fact these folks would probably be the type to bully rico nasty before she got big.
like with halsey, she is white passing, 100%, this is not a pete wentz scenario, if she doesnt tell you shes black, you wouldnt ever know. i dont know if she lays much claim to blackness, but i do know growing up in new jersey with a visibly black parent isnt going to be raindrops on roses, and i do know being in touch with your black ancestry in and of itself gives you more empathy towards the black experience. like that shampoo thing, one can definitely argue that thats not something she has to face. but is it really a bad thing if someone else repeats something you said so that people will hear it? was she claiming it as her struggle? i dont know, and i dont think she should. but it is the struggle of people in her life, so whats wrong with calling attention to it?
idk. this is a longer answer than you asked for. no it doesnt change how i feel about pete, hes not whitepassing.

it’s the way that after i stopped rping with blogs that have mostly/only white fcs, my interactions dropped .. like so much - immediately.
the amount of blogs i unfollowed when i made the decision.. and the lack of new blogs Ive followed since. i know the indie krp tag can be problematic but it’s the only place i know of to interact with poc muses exclusively, even if it is a bit limiting. i know it’s not a popular decision and that there is only one other person i’ve heard of also doing this (the blog that inspired me to) but it just like - confirms what i’ve always known about the rpc and it makes me feel ........... icky? sad?
this has been my creative outlet for almost 10 years now and only now have i decided to take away the white-centric lens of the internet and choose my own way. i don’t know what the goal of this rant is but i’ve never felt so .. alone? i guess? it’s normal for rpers to feel unwanted sometimes, but just the massive shift i’ve felt. it’s a redundant question but how many rp blogs are only/mainly white fcs? white is One race in the entire world and it feels like on here thats still the only race getting glorified- it’s weird and i see it every time i go in the indie tag. pages and pages of white faces with the sprinkling in of a lightskinned poc featured on every blog, how many zendayas do we need? and don’t get me wrong, zendaya is beautiful but is she the only one of my people that yall like to see? is she or any other token picked up from some mainstream show the only black girl its ok to play??
like id like to genuinely talk to some white only multi muses and ask them- you have like 10+ muses and not ever did a poc stand out to you? why? genuinely, why? it’s a clear pattern of who gets picked as the white fc of the month and sure i can bitch and moan in pms about it but it really breaks my heart every time i see it.
it feels/felt like the moment i decided to filter who i rp with- at first it was slow and it was clear people hadn’t read my rules. i get it, it takes a moment. but now? radio silence. i don’t feel like i’m asking for a lot. i shouldn’t have to ask at all. i’ve never felt silence like this.

So since Monster High might have a come back, and those uninspired dolls have officially been released...
Sus Rasict things Monster High has done
1. White washed an Egyptian character
Cleo looks so white when she's based off of Egyptian royalty. Yall can't even tell me she's tan or anything like that she looks plain white
If you don't think they whitewashed her you can't deny monster high participated in colorism. Cleo our main boo who the audience is supposed to cheer for is lighter then her sister which we are supposed to hate. Her sister is occasional the antagonist.
Tumblr media
2. Over sexualize their black character
Yall can try all you want to tell me otherwise but clawdeen was dressed more scandalous then the rest of the dolls. In the anime version of Monster High clawdeen says something along the lines of "One of the cute things about me is my short revealing skirt."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mattel let that slide by. Many black characters get over sexualized.
https://www.blackburncenter.org/post/2019/02/20/the-historical-roots-of-the-sexualization-of-black-women-and-girls
Can we just stop sexualizing little poc girls. I remember as a child putting clawdeen skirt on her and trying to pull it down a bit , so it wouldn't show too much. When I tried to pull it down it just went down all her legs.
3. Not good at representing indigenous people skin tone.
In MH they do have indigenous based designs but they don't necessarily reflect the way indigenous people look. A little girl can't pick up the doll and say "hey this doll looks like me" and I think all little girls would like to see them self in things they like. Also a lot of poc end up hating that they aren't lighter. It would be nice if they could see their skin represented in a doll.
Dont tell me that oh it wouldn't work with these monsters because the monster doesn't have skin blah blah blah blah. MH has designed black coded vampires and white coded werewolfs before.
Tumblr media
Also I'm so tired of companies having so many white people than sprinkling some black people and calling it a day cause they met the "diversity quota". I'm honestly thinking now that they just put Clawdeen in to say they have a poc doll."Look at how diverse we are." If they really where diverse they would not have white washed a Egyptian character in the first place.
4. They just have whitewashed many more characters
First is Gigi Grant, Middle Eastern people can be light skinned but they're are also "tanned" middle eastern people. MH already got a whole ton of white characters. It would not hurt to just give Gigi some melanin.
Another whitewashed character is Marisol Coxi
Her doll and doll art fur/skin is light pink
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But in the webisodes she looks like a black coded character
Tumblr media
Idk why they changed the way she looks in one media from the other. Just let us have more poc dolls!
Third is Honey Swamp its possible she is simply a lightskined person which is perfectly fine. But it seems like monster high just likes to deny us melanin enriched dolls.
5. The Tiki
They never had a tiki Monster High character that looked like the rest of the MH dolls. Which would have been nice to see but alas it was stolen from us. The tiki where just a plot device for a MH movie Escape from Skull Shores. They don't ever tease the tiki or anything like that, thank goodness. At the beginning of the movie they just follow these white man's orders , which is very sus.
Another weird thing, is in a different movie Scaris City of Frights Cleo accidently destroys the whole village. Then Skelita (an indigenous based character) tells her to apologize to the tiki but instead Cloe is all like "Hah I dont apologize." then she manipulates the tiki into building a ship for her. That unnecessary scene just leaves a bad taste.
Honestly its sad how the tiki are always being manipulated. I think the media should stop using poc as mere plot devices.
6. Having a white character based off poc aesthetic
Monster high gave Jane Boolittle a jungle aesthetic. They state that she never knew her origins. Honestly I think they are trying to go for a Tarzan type of story. "Oh no us rich white people who decided to explore a jungle and brought our kid with us too..... for some odd reason ..... have had something tragic happen to us. Now our child is alone only to be raised by animals ahhhhwww." Later she gets adopted by another researcher/explorer. MH if you are gonna base a character on the "jungle aesthetic" maybe base it off ohh idk people who actually live in the jungle and not some rando white girl!!
I'm so tired of these stupid colonial based stories first with that werid white con-man in Skull Shores and now these white explorers!! I can't.
(Also Jane being a whole stalker is not cute. Her being a stalker endorses that behavior. A kid might see that and be like "wow she's stalking but that's okay because she's shy uwu. " pls never stalk anyone ever. )
If we ever cancel a Monster High character it should be Jane Boolittle.
7. "Race" jokes
I thought monster high was supposed to be about accepting people but the amount of times a monster from a different race has made a race joke on another monster is not even funny. The discrimination and horrible jokes Ghoulia had to hear right in front of her face is so sad. I think its honestly teaching kids to make/be tolerant with rasict jokes.
Tumblr media
"Uhhhhhnnnhhhhng I'm a mummie"
For example when Duce made a joke on mummies doing" zombie motions". Like you got the wrong race and a inaccurate stereotype dummy. These writers were stupid. 😑
I dont think we should cancel MH just Jane Boolittle or anything like that. But if monster high comes back and they still haven't addressed/fixed these issues we should definitely fight them.💖

do u pass as a white person? is that why ppl refer to u as a white girl? or is it just bc you came from a more privileged background?
i pass to the point where people are legitimately shocked and dont believe me when i say im mixed. im pretty white bc my mom’s super white and my dad’s side is lightskinned anyway. its also probably factors in that i came from a more privileged background because the public school system i grew up in is basically equal to the private schools where most of my classmates grew up.
its like, weird but it ended up ostracizing me on two levels that you wouldnt typically think one would be ostracized for, but because it was the direct opposite of the makeup of the community i was “too different” and kinda seen as like, invading even tho i have every right to be here bc im mixed but also bc im third gen for my university
ive had a couple conversations w kids who i wasnt friends with last year but am now and they were like “yeah we didnt really like you because you were the smart white kid and it was like, why are you here”
addition: my major also factored into it. i was a psci major which was all black but my bf who’s white is a chemistry/pharmacy major didnt have any issues bc the vast majority of the non-black kids are chem/bio/pharm majors so he didnt really stand out as much as i did in liberal arts where everyone is black
