Hey there! and yeeesss, i’m so glad you’re gonna give anime a try! there are so many good stories and plots in anime which dont exist in western media so it’s a great mode of entertainment! so as for recs, lemme copy and paste my previous list and update it to answer your question!

Currently watching:

Neon Genesis Evangelion - i admit it has a slow buildup but be patient because you will really find it intense and see how it’s not your typical mecca anime. so far, i think it seems to be a deconstruction of the genre and has alot of psychological themes

Boku no Hero Academia - it’s a recent anime and it’s really good! i think it’s on course to becoming a really big anime that will last many seasons at this rate. the story is about a world where majority of the inhabitants are heroes cause they have quirks (powers).. and the premise is that the main character doesnt have one but he wants to be a hero so watch and see how the story unfolds!

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures (currently on Stardust Crusaders) - macho anime with an excellent plot! the guys are hot haha and many of the memes are in japanese so watch the original subbed but if you prefer not to read, the dub isnt bad. it’s very memey but the story is really entertaining and has unpredictable moments

One Punch Man - a parody of a superhero anime. tbh this isnt really binge-watch material cause it’s like a running gag and the story unfolds after episode 5 so i’ve just been watching this during my cardio days in the gym. but it’s really funny and a good anime

Hunter X Hunter - this anime is popular and it’s about hunters. so the beginning has the protagonist wanting to be a hunter and then he meets some fellow hunters along the way. it’s one of the highest rated anime in MyAnimeList (the RottenTomatoes equivalent of the anime world) so yeah check this out!

Recently watched:

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (Battle Tendency) - SONO CHI NO SADAMEEE JOOOOOOJOOOOOOOOOOOOOO the type of anime that’ll get you wanting to go to the gym and lift. that being said, it has a really amazing story

Shingeki no Kyojin / Attack on Titan - it’s the Game of Thrones of anime imo.. like it’s so GOOD.. it will just make you gag after every episode!!! it’s so intense and there are really badass characters. and the plot is really brilliant. like if you think season 1 was like WHAT THE FUCkk.. wait til season 2! this anime is crazy and exciting. not for the faint-hearted tbh cause it can be graphic and disturbing (also dont get attached. they could die!) but yeah, this anime is popular true and some say it’s overrated but that’s because it really deserves all the recognition and success it has for its amazing plot

Love Live! School Idol Project - i honestly just watched this like out of curiosity and just for kicks. i was not expecting to love it but after episode 3, i was like wait??? wasnt this anime supposed to be fun?? why am i crying?? so yeah, it’s super good, touching, entertaining and sweet! and the songs are really catchy and good.. TBH this anime is like so gay since there are no men (except Honoka’s dad) so yeah it passes the Bechdel Test with perfect score

Love Live! Movie - the conclusion to the anime!

Love Live! Sunshine - i watched this like a few months after finishing Love Live! cause i loved the original girls and i was worried i wont like these girls.. but honestly, you will appreciate them. and it’s EVEN GAYER.. and is soo good too!

Rurouni Kenshin - i think i watched this anime twice/thrice.. It’s so suspenseful. it’s about samurais. and this anime made me interested about Japan’s history. it’s kind of a period drama with amazing fight sequences. and it’s critically acclaimed. it’s my father’s all-time favourite anime

Rurouni Kenshin OVA - it’s a prequel. also more violent and tragic than its anime counterpart.. like it’s really different from the series. but it’s so good. you’ll find out how Kenshin got his iconic X mark from here!)

Ghost Stories - THE DUB IS A MASTERPIECE! THE SUBBED IS SHIT. TRUST ME. the DUB is the popular one too cause it’s the superiour version. You really have to see this one. the anime bombed in Japan so the english dubbers got all the rights for the anime and they gave the go signal for the dubbers to do whatever the fuck they want and the end result is fucking hilarious. it shits on the Scary Movie Franchise tbh

Puella Magi Madoka Magica - i swear do not be deceived.. it is a really intense and surprisingly dark anime with excellent plot twists

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun - super funny anime. if you need a laugh, this will really lift you up. i watched the first two episodes in sub and dub back to back.. and i can vouch that the voice actors for the English dub are excellent. it’s actually even funnier.. but if you prefer subs, then that’s fine. it’s just the lines are more humorous, expressive and have more variety :) Nozaki’s voice is also attractive in the dub.. it’s still very Nozaki imo. this anime pokes fun at the shoujo manga yet still has romantic elements. it’s mostly comedy though

Jigoku Shoujo / Hell Girl - angst, tragedy, philosophical anime analysing humanity’s hatred, need for vengeance, and suffering. Futakomori or the 2nd season is my favourite but it’s worth finishing the entire series. 3rd season is very painful to watch though and you dont have to watch that one tbh if you dont want to lol

Yu Yu Hakusho - occult, spirit world, ghosts, and fighting. you most probably have heard of this

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters - 1st series starring Yugi. iconic!

Digimon - can be very intense! better than Pokemon imo

Cardcaptor Sakura - this is also suspenseful. like the premise is essentially that Sakura has to catch all the “monsters” that were freed from this book. and it’s up to her to “capture” them and put into cards. magic, fantasy, and beautiful animation

Ranma ½ - this was so funny but the ending was disappointing cause it got cancelled apparently.. i really hope this will go out of limbo and give us a proper ending like InuYasha did but i doubt it

I don’t remember if i finished these but I watched a lot of episodes enough to recommend it and will rewatch them soon to relieve memories. I’m pretty sure I tuned in though and watched like 80%:

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (i feel like i actually finished this. idk why my memory is hazy concerning this anime. this is so popular. you should’ve heard of this iconic anime somehow. i watched and tuned in but i don’t remember how or when i stopped)

Tsubasa Chronicles (it’s like a spin-off of Cardcaptor Sakura but they’re like all grown up and the plot is different)

i’ve always been into like.. not horror per se, because i hate most horror movies, but creepy or disturbing things? there’s no way to describe it that isn’t embarrassing lmao. the perfect example is all the imagery in hellblade: black rot slowly creeping through her veins up her arm, huge warrior men with branches, antlers, and feathers growing in the place of heads, piles of too-large burned corpses writhing, charred hands reaching through walls, a rotting man with a flayed back, a woman half scorched and half covered with etchings.

i couldn’t figure out why i’ve always been into stuff like this. i don’t like horror - the gore and the suspense make me sick and i just can’t stand it. but i love creepy images like this, especially if i’m reading about it or it’s done artfully in a visual medium. (as a better known example, the feet of the wife & child dangling in gladiator. young me loved that shit - not loved it in a ‘oh hell yeah they dead as fuck’ kinda way. but i loved feeling sad about it?? and the image stuck with me, how beautifully framed it was in spite of it being so horrifying and tragic)

and i think (think being the key word, it is past midnight and i’ve been having too many Revelations™ lately, so take this with a grain of salt) - i think it’s because i have a lot of really dark shit in my brain (obviously, i run a mental illness blog lmao) and it’s really comforting to see dark and disturbing things in a beautiful way?? not in a romanticizing kinda way. but.. all this horrible stuff in my mind is just like sludgy goop that sloshes around up there. even that description is making sense of it - it’s chaotic, it has no form, no healthy outlet, it’s just meaningless negativity that takes over.

so seeing evil or bad things that are framed tragically and sometimes beautifully or at least aesthetically.. it’s really comforting in a way? especially when the images are personifications of mental illness. like inside my head it’s just “DEMONIC SCREAMING 24/7 [BASS BOOSTED]” that hurts all the time and is terrifying, but i can make sense of a creepy deer skull on a walking corpse or w/e. it’s tragic and beautiful, not like in my head where it’s all tragic and hellish nonsensical neverending ugly chaotic nightmares. if that makes any sense

idk i realize this sounds really 3edgy5me and i hate that 12 year old me would probably make the same argument about a picture off deviantart of a goth girl with running eyeliner holding a black rose but. i was feeling weird about how much i was into the hellblade imagery and this line of logic comforts me

also as a sidenote i wish horror was more about the imagery & artful visuals and not jumpscares and gore bc i’d be so fuckin into it (i recently watched the witch and loveddd it, more horror like that movie and hellblade thank u)

also disclaimer: i only like this stuff when it’s fiction. if i ever see a disturbing image from irl, like pictures from disasters, i wanna vom. there are so many times i’ve been exposed to really horrifying images from real life and been mentally scarred. thought that was an important distinction to make. my hyperempathy is too intense for that shit lmao fiction only please

ROAD TO THE OSCAR MAYER WIENER AWARDS 2K19

First Reformed, 2017 (dir. Paul Schrader)

Nominated for: Best Original Screenplay

ok well uuhhh. so u know how my plan was to watch as many oscar-nominated films this past week as possible before the awards show tonight. well. that uuhhhh didnt happen my dudes. and not for lack of trying either!! i searched high and low for theaters still showing The Favorite and all the show times I could find were while i was still at work, and its not available for rent on amazon video yet. in fact i ran into this problem with a lot of the movies i wanted to see; theaters just werent showing them really. which kinda doesnt make any sense cause u’d think movie theaters would jump at the opportunity to make extra money by showing oscar-nominated movies before the awards show for people who wanna check out the nominees.

one movie i WAS able to find to rent on amazon video was First Reformed, one of a few movies on the noms list who only got one or two noms total. paul schrader, the writer and director of this flick, previously directed timeless classics such as Raging Bull and Taxi Driver. schrader became famous because of these two films for creating fantastic character studies, and i gotta say he lives up to his reputation with First Reformed. its a dark, sometimes surreal, and layered look at the life of a priest who’s been through some tough shit, who now works for a large religious conglomerate preaching at a tiny “tourist trap” church that is known by the other preachers in Abundant Life as the “souvenir shop”. his encounter with the husband of a woman who attends First Reformed sends him spiraling into self-doubt and questioning his own religion, and it all culminates in one final tragic scene that plays out like an emotional punch to the stomach

ill get back to that later but i’ll touch first on the things i really like about this film. acting overall is very solid, but ethan hawke really delivers something fantastic with the character of reverend toller. im kinda surprised he didnt get a best actor nom?? cause i thought he was really great. ethan hawke is one of those actors thats been in a lot of stuff, but i can never remember WHAT i’ve seen him in, i just know hes a good actor who usually delivers solid performances. amanda seyfried is in this too and she did pretty good, her performances for me always kinda range inbetween really good and not so great and here shes more towards the “really good” side.

now another area where this movie got snubbed FOR SURE was the cinematography category cause this movie just looks divine. a lot of use of natural lighting, lots of playing around with shadows and high-contrast lighting, dynamic framing of scenes. and the movie is shot in an interesting aspect ratio of 1.37:1 (almost a perfect square) that i thought was a cool touch, it almost kinda closed things in so ur focus remains on the characters and their actions instead of the setting so much if that makes any sense. idk it was unique and tried some different things which i feel makes it deserving of a cinematography nom but i guess the academy didnt feel the same way??

ok so the nom that it actually DID get, best original screenplay, is without a doubt this movie’s strongest asset. the story is just.... so fucking smart, and so well-paced, dialogue feels natural but still leaves an impact, and the way this movie progresses into pure suspense by the end doesnt really hit u out of nowhere but still is jolting enough to really make u pay attention and sweat a little. like.... holy shit. this movies ending is so intense. its not quite a horror movie but it kinda has some horror movie-ish moments in that it evokes such a visceral response from the viewer. i know it was pretty disturbing for me at least, and it takes a lot to get me truly disturbed.

shit i mean this movie was really good!! after watching it im surprised its only got one nomination. i suppose i could see there being some mixed feelings about how this movie ends, because its pretty surreal and its unclear if what is going on is actually whats happening or if its metaphorical/an illusion/etc. but really thats the only issue i had with it. guh idk man im like kinda expecting tonights awards ceremony to be a bit of a shit show but we’ll see what happens.
