funniest part about people writing self inserts for miguel where he gives pet names in spanish is that miguel in the comics never struck me as someone who uses Spanish regularly if ever... like sure you can blame that on peter david not wanting to use Spanish too much since he's a gringo but also it's easy to think it's cause he spent a lot of his teen years outside of home and he just doesn't have a good relationship with his mom. we don't even see him speaking Spanish with Gabi either

Some thoughts about if RTC was ever adapted to a film and what I think would be interesting:
First of all Karnak as an actual animatronic or puppet, it's doable
Each of the choir kids' songs would be visually different as well as different music styles
Hype up Jane's creepiness, they could put a lotta effort into the makeup
The kids would still be the backup performers, but their costumes can be more intricate, not just their school uniforms with accessories
WTWN would be very much exaggerated, like a mix between a pop music video, a gameshow, and an influencer's travel video, it would feel too staged and perfect, very much trying to hype up Ocean and push down the others
Noel's Lament would be in black and white, very much inspired by old cinema, particularly French tragedies, for obvious reasons, somewhat gloomy, but also oddly beautiful, plus a film could go all out with the costumes for this one, bonus if they change how the film is shot specifically for this song to emphasise the old cinema vibes
TSIA is just an over the top music video, not in the same way WTWN is tho, it's flashy but it's like a music video made by a small youtuber (for obvious reasons), feeling a bit homemade but they rock it
Talia would completely contrast TSIA and be exceedingly beautiful, think gorgeous paintings and historical romance films, it would absolutely be about a wedding, just completely opposite to the flashy materialistic TSIA
tbf TSIA/Talia could also be like a mini romance film, going from Mischa living his awesome life, to meeting her in the club, then getting married
SABM would be 100% like early sci-fi films, including cheesy effects and costumes, I want Ricky's outfit to look absolutely over the top as well, inspired by some 70s/80s prog rock looks, give him a cape, and incorporate his mobility aids there's so much potential
TBoJD would be very gothic, with minimal colours, portraying a tragic funeral for the mystery victim, attended by faceless guests and the choir, until the music picks up
bc its such an iconic part of the show, Jane would still fly around, and the setting would become a surreal interpretation of the cyclone accident, the one memory and subsequently the one defining factor Jane has to reflect on
Sugar Cloud would be a celebration, hyping up Constance and her newfound joy in life, a stage in the sky where she can freely perform and dance with her friends
The recorder solo stays as her giving someone the mic and the rest headbanging to it
I feel like it has potential to be really cool but also they could just as easily ruin it,
Finally Ocean would be the obligatary mainstream singer casting, and WTWN would be really hyped up and it would be really cursed

I noticed on your post of trans girl movies (thank you btw!) that you'd created your own subtitles for Surrender Dorothy and how-- how did you do that? Did you use a certain software? How did you incorporate it into the film file?
I currently create captions but I'm restricted to the company's software so I've never actually added them on my own/to my own files, but I'd love to be able to create subs for myself and others. If you have time, I would hugely hugely appreciate some advice. If not, that's okay, have an awesome day. (I'm off to watch some movies now lol)
Yeah! It was my first time doing it!
I used Subtitle Edit. Which is free and open source. I didn't like it at first, but it actually kinda rocks (I say while having zero points of comparison). It has a semi built in video player and waveform viewer, so you can pretty easily sync things up.
And I didn't REALLY incorporate them into the video file (depending on how you mean it). I'm sure I could have (MKV files are capable of holding non hard coded subtitles), but I just left the subtitles as a separate file. As long as your SRT file has the same file name (other than the extension) as your video file then most video players (like VLC or MPC-HC) will load it up automatically.
Someone had already uploaded a (lower quality) copy of Surrender Dorothy to YouTube too, so I ripped the automatically machine generated subtitles from that to use as a starting point. I'm not sure how much time it saved though. Obviously it misinterpreted a lot of things, but even when the text and timing was technically right it would merge lines together or split them up weirdly. Tho I mean even my version of the subtitles are still jank in places. I might do another pass eventually to fix up a few things.
It was a cool project! I'd be into doing it again, but most movies already have professionally made subtitles (that can be easily found on google for pirating) and it's time consuming enough that it'd have to be for something that I really love and rewatch often.

After entering my second year of art school a few weeks ago, I have been assigned to translate a written book into different types of media. The book I have read for this is Films Die Nergens Draaien, a Dutch children's novel about time travel and, for me, about grief and having sympathy for the things people went through in the past.
For me, this was a very deep and highly personal movie, as the main character, Cato, struggles with having little to no relationship with her father, a man ridden with grief and depression over having lost his wife at his daughter's birth. Even tho this last part luckily isn't something I have experienced in my family, I do have no relationship with my father aside of resentment for treating me, my mother and brother the way he does.
Because of this, Cato was a very intriguing character to design, but as I've learned, there needs to be a balance between personal things and technical things when adapting a story that intrigues you. There needs to be something personal, of course, otherwise there wouldn't be any heart to it, but it wouldn't be the story it was meant to be in the first place.
Tumblr media
See here some of my experiments when designing Cato; I made her, after struggle to find a way to incorporate the time travel part of her story into her design, resemble those old grandfather clocks in small parts of her character. Her face has the characteristics of the clock self and the silhouette has the shape of the stand of the clock, which was really cool to work with.
Tumblr media
Here is her current final version! As of now I'm working on storyboards for both a small comic and a booktrailer, whose final versions, if everything goes well, should both be finished around the end of october (sobs very loudly we got so little time for these assignments)
As for the tags! @otwdfanfic as you asked to see some of my work for this project (and update as to it being translated into different languages, I'm pretty sure they're doing that rn? Saw some stuff about it online!) and @rosiethedragongeek for the art!

I seen some folks voiced disdain over the lack of CG cutscenes in game and all of them being in trailers but someone mentioned its prob due to the day and night cycle included in the game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the two instances of Sonic and Amy cutscene that was seen it looks like it takes place at differnet times between daylight and early night. (tho keep in mind top one is lower quailty and unfotunately prob not gonn have a better ver since they banned filming due the giltch)
Considering this and the fact the animation are greatly improved from what I’ve seen, I don’t mind and looks ot be really cool. They wanted to put this kind of system in Sonic 06 and I’m glad there finally to incorporate into a game.

Ok another thing!
I really like how... feminine Jack is. It's sort of an extension of his manic-pixie-dream-boy status. He's kind, soft-spoken and Rose generally makes him pretty nervous (though he's socially talented enough to work through that really well). This particularly stands out to me during their sex scene. I think it's my favourite sex scene of all time, actually. That may be a weird thing to have, but still. Rose is the one who initiates it ("Put your hands on me, Jack" is a GREAT line) and we immediately see Jack at the most nervous he's ever been. Then when they're done he's literally shaking so Rose asks if he's okay, and then SHE holds HIM as they (mostly Jack tho) calm down.
The movie is so conventional and so unconventional at the same time which speaks to its genius.
Reversal of gender roles isn't something that didn't exist before Titanic though. (and I KNOW that's not what you're saying here, but hear me out) LMA has done it in 1860s!!!!!!!! Greek mythology deals with gender themes (where do you think the term hermaphrodite came from?) In my opinion, Titanic didn't handle the concept in an innovative enough manner (and everybody knows I'm a BIG fan of that concept). It's cool! It's great! Blockbusters introduce the wider audience to great many things, but that doesn't mean they should be praised for every remotely unconventional idea that's a part of the story they're trying to tell. (making the already existing concept your own? that's another thing entirely and I LOVE IT!) What makes a good movie for me is taking what's already there and crowning it with your own unique perspective. What you're praising Titanic for is actually what I appreciate about Lady Bird (2017). It makes you think that it's all about tropes and cliches and everything that's stereotypically meant to speak to the female audience, but then it surprises you and does this fantastic spin on everything you've ever known without disregarding the tropes completely. But it's not just about simultaneously defying and celebrating the tropes (and here's the main difference), it's about this very personal viewpoint that Gerwig incorporated into the film. It's kinda like when you're adapting a book, you shouldn't try to make the movie resemble the source material (because that's NEVER gonna work, you simply can't meet everyone's expectations), you should make it resemble your own understanding of the source material. That's what makes it feel more personal to the viewer. Titanic didn't feel personal to me despite being meant to appeal to people. My point is: it's a movie that was made to be liked and appreciated which yes, isn't inherently a bad thing, but maybe I'm just too into modernism and avant-garde to appreciate that. It really is a personal preference! I like it better when the art I'm consuming doesn't make a big deal out of itself and ends up hitting the emotional mark without meaning to. (the main goal is usually to send some kind of message that tends to be controversial in some way) I don't like it when movie directors assume I'm going to relate to something because "everybody relates to it in some way". You CAN'T know that. (it puts a pressure on people, like you have to be a part of that specific circle or you're not human enough or whatever) This feels like that literature discussion about supposedly pointless overanalysing of motifs or claiming that classic lit is inherently difficult to read or whatever... Maybe it's not just propaganda coming from the male dominated world, maybe I LIKE long discussions on life and death and politics in my movies. (and just because something is problematic in one regard, it doesn't mean it has no significant value or worse, that it shouldn't be explored. you can always learn! from everything!) Which doesn't mean that I don't like a good coming of age story about a teenage girl. Or spend my time watching a teen soap. Or that somebody can't enjoy a romantic comedy if they love Dostoyevsky. Or that these art branches necessarily cancel each other out. (I'm referring to some of the points you made earlier, sorry for drifting away djsjdkkd)
What you can always do in film is present your own unique perspective and celebrate that uniqueness. That's something people can connect with, regardless of the topic. If it makes its way to the heart of ONE person, it's a winner. And Titanic is definitely a winner in that respect! It just didn't get to me. And that's fine too.
Also! The intention behind a certain line doesn't make the line itself good (same goes for film in general)!!!!!! "Put your hands on me, Jack" is just... it's funny. I laughed when I heard it. This movie is just... way better in theory. I LOVED what you had to say about the ideas that went into it, but I didn't really catch that on screen. Both the characters and their love story failed to be compelling in my eyes, the aesthetics got in the way of that even if it wasn't supposed to. That's what happened if you ask me. Oh and disliking traditionally feminine tropes and plot directions and things such as grand romantic gestures or melodramatic confessions of love doesn't immediately mean that you're sexist or have internalized misogyny? Society is responsible for giving those things a bad rep, but disliking them doesn't always have to go beyond disliking them.
I'm making a lot of points here and I'm not wearing my contacts, dear tumblr forgive me. (I don't need you to, I'm just trying to be polite dhjdjdi)

fnaf movie spoilers thoughts below:
I love love LOVED the movie it had a perfect horror tone geared with children audience in mind, I did think it could do with more scares though I understand it couldn't do gore it would have had a few good scares (I loved foxy running hehe)
I saw so many cool easter eggs like in the hooligan killing scene chica being of course in the kitchen but also bonnie being in his hallway. real cool
i dont need to say how much i love matthew lilliard and his return to horror i will worship and his unique way of acting is perfect for a film with this kind of audience
I didn't like vanessa BECAUSE i feel like if you were going to have her there i would have appreciated much more unhingedness from her than just following her dads orders i would want to see more of her being much more unstable (dont get me wrong she was but i want to see her GIVING the off putting) also idk why but most of her lines just didnt fit right they felt the most unnatural
aunt was a bit too evil and her plot didnt make enough sense to me! her lawyer was funny though
with the kids.. the tonal shift between them being goofy kids and killer animatronics wasnt executed well enough even tho the juxtaposition is certainly welcomed! like and them blindly following purple guy due to memory loss wasnt enough for me. i liked more the idea of them being like animals, their ghosts holding a child's tragedy but evolving from that into something terrible (i LOVED the fort scene tho, it was just really sweet and the puppets were great at looking both scary and cute) i think in general im more into a faceless nameless feel for the kids ghosts.
on that note golden freddy should have been much more hyped and MUCH more incorporeal. i didnt like golden freddy basically being an aware child and also in some form the most evil one. i like GF having the most animosity but it withered away with more screentime. for golden freddy specifically i just feel like less is more. the "its me" had me yelling but it would have been served best with more anticipation!!

Hawkeye Episode 1 Thoughts
It’s good to be back.
Okay, although the first two episodes are out, I’m only gonna watch episode 2 tomorrow.
Knew there was gonna be a flashback to show how Hawkeye inspired Kate. Was hoping for something CA: Winter Soldier-related (totally not because that’s in my fic), but the Battle of New York is the more obvious choice, I guess.
TOTALLY CALLED BRIAN D’ARCY JAMES AS KATE’S DAD! (Insert lame, slightly tasteless 13 Reasons Why joke here)
Damn, they’re really not subtle with the “fall out of the sky”, are they? How many times did they say that? like three? four?
Why does Vera Farmiga look different here? Is she de-aged?
okay. It’s Chitauri time.
I LOVE love love how they incorporated some Avengers footage and we get to see Clint doing that new falling-off the roof thing from a different angle.
Honestly, if aliens attacked my city, half of me would be like “this is so cool!”
Okay, so what’s going to happen - oh Derek’s dead.
wait, that ruins my fic idea!! ARGH!! No more Derek beating up a guy at night.
But I’m here for Vera Farmiga Eleanor Bishop being Kate’s primary parenting figure, tho. Even if she turns out to be evil later.
There’s no way he’s actually dead, Brian D’Arcy James is billed as main cast, right? (Just checked IMDb - it says he’s in it for 5 eps)
Absolutely loving this intro sequence. Straight out of a comic book! And it makes it very clear: this is KATE’s show.
Very conspicuously avoiding showing what has replaced Avenger’s Tower, I see.
Rogers: the Musical goes on for SUCH a long time and I’m here for every second of it. So damn hilarious to see Clint’s expressions.
I’m surprised that not many people are recognising Clint. At a show about HIM. Only a little girl and not, like, the people sitting next to him? And the way she waves at him makes it seem like he’s there undercover, too!
...Ant-Man?!?! Payoff for Scott, I guess. He’s famous now! Now everyone will wanna take pictures with him!
So the show hasn’t explained Clint’s hearing loss yet. But i’m going with the Avengers Facility blowing up and damaging his ears.
Is this the first time that we have scene in the toilet in the MCU?
I’m slightly bothered by Clint’s kids’ ages in this.
According to google it’s been about 3.5 years between the filming of this show (early 2021) and Endgame (late 2017).
Hawkeye is Christmas 2024. Since all three kids were snapped, they’ve only aged about 1 year since we last saw them at the start of Endgame.
Okay, at least Lila looks like she hasn’t aged 3 years. And Nathaniel still somehow looks like a realistic 4-year-old, I guess. But man, Cooper looks like a grown-ass man now. He’s taller than his dad. Puberty must have hit him hard in 1 year.
Just “rich people things” montage for like, 10 minutes. (Then Kate slaying for another 10 minutes)
LUCKY THE PIZZA DOG LUCKY THE PIZZA DOG LUCKY THE PIZZA DOG
Can’t tell if Armand (III) and Jack are father and son. Wouldn’t Jack be called Armand IV, then???
Can the Russian mobsters not tell that it totally doesn’t look like Clint in the Ronin suit?
LUCKY EATING PIZZA
Kate is so badass.
Kinda cool to see Clint fight without a bow and arrow. He (was) still a trained S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, y’all.
Final thoughts: Lucky/10. IMDb says Episode 2 is even higher-rated so I can’t wait for tomorrow.

I think I am the only one who hates the idea of TLOU getting a tv show. I feel like removing interactivity just won’t be the same, TLOU works because it’s a video game. If people are excited don’t let me take away the excitement from you. Moments like Ellie saving Joel and my ass( I am separating us because even tho I control him, I am not him) during encounters, Joel and I spending hours searching for comics, at the end of the game, when you have to kill the doctors, I couldn’t do it, I waited there for 10mins waiting something else to happen, that conflicting emotion won’t be replicated in the tv show. And also, it’s the same story, sure, they will add new scenes but at the end, overall, it’s still the same story and I literally have no interest in watching the tv show when I just the story in the games are way more impactful
Thoughts under the cut. A disclaimer since last time I posted about the show a few anons got shitty: These are personal thoughts and feelings. Not discourse. Cool? Cool.
I'll be honest, anon. I feel the same way. Television adaptations never go over well, most of the time it's a grab for money from HBO they pump in a lot of their own opinions and water down the final product. Most shows go on longer than necessary to prolong their ability to sell merchandise. Look at GOT and The Walking Dead. The networks lock in these shows before the story is finished and it leads to creative differences causing the writers to leave and the network to have full creative control over a story that isn't theirs. They care about the bottom line, not the characters or the world that someone spent a portion of their life making. The Last of Us stops being Naughty Dog's and is subject to the will of an algorithm. Didn't test well with audiences because it got a little to real? That's fine we'll rework a few scenes. I will say the only thing I hope for is world lore. I really want to know more about certain infected, as long as the writing source is Neil. I am happy for the actors who are getting cast, I think they'll do a decent job most of them I've seen in other films and shows and they're all solid.
That being said, a show takes so much away from the original material. There is no way to articulate the way I felt after the first game, no way to make me feel the deep gut feeling of helplessly watching Joel betray Ellie's trust like that. To lie to her after everything. The way my heart raced when I was trying to escape David as Ellie. The entirety of Left Behind leaving me crying because by the end, I loved Riley just as much as Ellie. Even the comics allow for more controlled yet engaging story telling. The plot set out beforehand and it unfolds and wraps up neatly giving us insight to Ellie's past, while also expanding the world of the game without taking away anything. We know what's going to happen to her and yet we're still engaged.
I do hope for the best for this venture. It's a story that has been an important part of my life and helped me through some difficult times as well as put me in the orbit of some wonderful people. I understand that the franchise is going to take some hits. Ones that Naughty Dog has hopefully considered and weighed, many people will get into the series and want to play, many will not care about the source material. People who have played the games might not support the show, they also might. Time will tell. Not knocking anyone who is excited for the show, that's perfectly fine to be hopeful for more content and to support the actors and writers. I'll probably find a stream for some of the lore if this is how they want to incorporate new information, but deep down I'd rather a few DLCs and a Part III before I see a series.

Got any good vampire facts?? (this can range from real to like,, headcanons idk)
I have a few but I haven’t looked much into the lore and history surrounding vampires, so these won’t be super in depth
The reason vampires got the trait of not showing up in mirrors is because old fashioned mirrors were backed with silver, which is something that hurts them, so they would be able to see themselves in current mirrors
I’m p sure this is the same reason they got the don’t show up in photos thing too, somth w old cameras or film or somth tho again not an expert
I have a hc that I haven’t developed that much that there are base things you can use to fight all vampires (like stakes, silver, garlic, invitation, sunlight, etc.), but that any religious defenses are based on the religion of the vampire before they were turned. I just think that would be cool since it doesn’t make sense for Christian holy tuff to be the only kind that works, and also because it would open up a whole new world of creative vampire fighting based on different practices.
I think having different species or types of vampires is cool, so that you can incorporate more powers and stories from around the world without muddying or overpowering one character
John Polidori wrote The Vampyre, which was a book that set in place many of the modern tropes and ideas around vampirism, shaping the modern world of vampire media and indirectly influencing the 1987 movie The Lost Boys, which stars Alex Winter, the same actor that played Polidori in the movie Haunted Summer one year later :-)

Things I Watched/Listened/Read These Past Few Days
So, I had a rather stressful month due to an assignment deadend - things are ok now - and I have decided I would watch or read or listen to any media I could, at least once a day, to cool down.
The movies on this post are the ones I watched to cope with the stress. I will be talking more about them as each of them go, if I liked them or not and etc. This is not a critical post, though, it's more... idk personal.
1. The Secret of Kells
Tumblr media
It is Cartoon Saloon's first movie ever. It's story is simple and you may not understand the importance of the Book of Kells without some historical background, but you will be able to enjoy it either way. My favorite scene is when Aisling starts singing and aaaaaaa it's too much. Gorgeous.
My only problem though... was that one black character's design. It seemed too close to the Black FaceTM. I got kinda turned off by it.
2. Wolfwalkers
Tumblr media
Yeah, I know, I know I should have watched it in a manner to support the artists the way they deserve to be supported and I really wish I could have done that. Either way, it is a beautifully animated film and to anyone able to afford Apple TV+, I highly beg you to support this movie and watch it. There is a HEART to it, a soul I've been missing in animated movies and only occasionally see.
You may think you figured out the entire plot from the trailers, but there is one aditional plot tied to it involving Mébh and I enjoyed the surprise of it. The movie is beautifully animated, I love the accents the characters have even if I need to force myself more to understand them - you see, I am not a native speaker and always listened more to a 'standard' american accent so hearing irish for the first time was hard. I figured it out though!! Am really proud.
Pleasepleaseplease support this movie is what I'm saying.
3. Ponyo
Tumblr media
IT'S SUCH A CUTE STUDIO GHIBLI MOVIE I SHOULD HAVE WATCHED IT SOONER AJSJDJEJEWJD
I wish we could have known more about Ponyo's family, but other than that I really enjoyed seeing what happened on-screen and how it was delivered. It's a cute tale. Manages to be creative and simple at the same time??? Don't expect much more than cute and simple and GORGEOUSLY ANIMATED though
4. The Old Guard
Tumblr media
Listen, I know they did it very differently than the comics - but sometimes you just want to see some immortal gays being badass you know :,)
It's hard to point what I love more about the movie. Cinematography, the creative idea (although we should thank the comic writers for that), the characters, their struggles, representation and they even ground the immortality superpower. I don't know how they do that but every action scene is tense even if you know they can not die. You just wonder if they will be ok. I don't know how they did that!
5. Oliver Twist (2005)
Tumblr media
I do not know the public reception of this, but I have been curious as to Oliver Twist since I heard of Disney's Oliver and Company inspiration. Therefore, once Prime added it then the oportunity came and I really liked it. I know it is narrated with a humorous tone but I do feel like it's descriptions of the horrors the main character faces were all right, I might as well have learned something.
It follows what many already know as the book - I haven't read it personally, therefore I do not know if it is a trustworthy adaptation - and we have Edward Hardwicke. Just. Edward Hardwicke.
6. The Mystery of the Sleepy Hollow
Tumblr media
I did enjoy this movie, doesn't mean I liked everything about it. I did think the main character jumped into conclusions often, as if the script could not decide if he should be competent or incompetent and it really bothered me. I do am a sucker for a mix between horror and mystery, though, and thus did not mind watching this one at Halloween night.
Also, main character passes out at least 4 times in this thing - can you see this is based on gothic literature yet?
THE DECAPITATIONS THO JAIDBEIEMGKEKENFWJW THE BODIES LOOKED LIKE LITTLE AMONG US DEAD CREWMATES SJEKEKWKEKRKEKRKKRKE
7. BBC Radio 4's "A Study in Scarlet"
Tumblr media
It's a nice adaptation with many aditional moments that really warm your heart. Reading Holmes being excited is one thing - listening is a whole other and I love how his voice sounds in this one. He speaks fast but it's easy to understand and hIS TONE OF VOICE IS HIGHER THAN YOUR USUAL ADAPTATION, LIKE WATSON CONSTANTLY POINTS OUT IN THE BOOKS
Stamford gets aditional moments aswell, and they are great.
8. Upside Down
Tumblr media
I have been curious about this movie since my father watched it back in 2013. I remembered the name and the basic premise for all these years - because I thought it was unique. I never watched it before because I thought it would be a cheesy romance movie bUT-
It has an unique worldbuilding and I love it. I even liked how the camera angles made me kinda umconfy because can you imagine talking to someone who's upside down LMAO. It's world have limits too, and I really appreciate that.
I simply did not understand how can someone get pregnant in Eden's situation but 😳 who am I to question 😳. I also wish Eden could have had more of a presence too, like I wish I could have seen more of her even with her amnesia :( I felt she had one of the weakest characterizations. I wish we could have seen Adam and Eden talking to each other more, seeing they slowly grow into lovers. I also didn't like how much exposition it had as well, like I did not understand the first 5 minutes of the movie at ALL.
Still enjoyed it tho. It's just... kinda average but thats ok i guess
9. Bojack Horseman S04EP09 “Ruthie”
Tumblr media
Massive comfort episode! I must have watched Ruthie more than any other Bojack Horseman episode, to be honest.
This episode is just a huge bad day for Princess Carolyn and the way she copes with it and how it is incorporated into the story is... beautiful and tragic. I love Princess Carolyn-centered episodes, and even though this one isn't compared to the trend this series has of making a fantastic Episode 11 for each season, it is still enjoyable and sad. That and I did have a small giggle at the miscarriage jokes, I'm so fucking sorry.
10. Brooklyn 99 Pilot Episode
Tumblr media
(Of course this image is not from that episode I just find this scene funny)
I had watched Brooklyn 99 before - but it's been a long time since I've seen the first episode that ever aired. I really enjoyed it and it did make my mother and I chuckle a little bit.
God, I need to keep up with this series again; it's been such a long time since I stopped watching due to stress getting in the way lmao
Part 2 will come as soon as I finish another 10 days 😊

First of all, congratulations on 100 followers! 🎉🥳 That is such a milestone.
I love that this particular side blog of yours is for original studyblr content, that's why I follow it, because you only want to see the same reblogged post so many times. 😆
Anywho, my question is, since you're in India - what would you like to see the western studyblrs incorporate more regarding Indian culture? Like, do you have music, films, or books you could recommend that we try so that we know a bit more about India, its people, and its culture?
My own personal knowledge is sporadic history, food, and some hits from various Bollywood films...and Bahubali since it's on Netflix in my country, so I'm slowly watching it. And that y'all have snakes like we have ants/spiders.
And then for a less broad question that is geared more towards you specifically, what is it about math and physics that you love so much? Like what about them drew you towards them?
thank you so much!!!
yeah i understand what you're talking about XD. i made this blog to document my journey in the next two years, and maybe even later on!
my answer kinda turned into an essay, so the people who want to, can read it under the cut :D.
wow. that's such an interesting question!!
a preface that i want to give is: india is a very vast country with a mix of so many different cultures, that one person cannot possibly know about all the little nuances of each other's cultures. so whatever answer i give, it is from my personal experience, and it is not meant to invalidate the experiences/opinions of others!!
i think india is perceived to be an extremely conservative and traditional country, where people are extremely religious. and though that is true for certain people and families (as is true in all other countries as well), it does not apply to everyone. there are many people who don't really fit into the stereotype of being "indian". so i think the first thing for anyone is to familiarise themselves with any culture that they want to engage with, try to be open minded, and try to learn. (i think this applies to every culture/social group in the world).
another thing that i really don't like about the representation of india in hollywood movies is that it is always portrayed as an extremely poor nation (see: slumdog millionare), which is really, really not true. there are a lot more dimensions to india than being a poor country. there are a lot of places in india which look like a western country, but they're not shown in movies for some reason.
bollywood movies are thought to be all about dancing and music and illogical plots, and that misconception sticks, though there are many movies with pretty illogical plots in hollywood as well. a lot of the movies which are propagated as the best movies are really not the best. some of my favourite bollywood movies are:
anand (1971) : it's the story of a man with terminal cancer, and how he lives his last few months. really heartfelt, touching, and please get ready to cry a lot.
masoom (1983) : it's about a young boy who is the illegitimate child of a really rich man, who doesn't know that he has a boy. it's about how he adjusts to his father's life and family after his mother passes away. a very unique story.
taare zameen par (2007): this is maybe the first movie which talked about dyslexia in kids, and about the faults in our education system. another touching movie. i think it was called "like stars on earth" outside of india.
3 idiots (2009): i think this is one of the most famous bollywood movies of all time. it's about the pressure present on the students in engineering colleges in india. it talks about the undue stress put on students and subsequently, the rising rates of suicide. i'd call it a dramedy.
bajrangi bhaijaan (2015): this is another dramedy. really heartfelt, it is about a mute child who is separated from her mother when visiting india from pakistan.
some other movies which are considered classics, but i haven't watched them yet are:
pyaasa (1957)
mother india (1957)
kaagaz ke phool (1959) - or any guru dutt movie really.
guide (1965)
andhadhun (2018)
some other mentions of the top of my mind are:
hera pheri (2000)
golmaal (1979)
golmaal 3 (2010)
chak de india (2007)
sholay (1975) - this is one of the cult classics in india. extremely loved an famous.
drishyam (2015) (i've only watched the reamke, which was in hindi... the original is in malayalam)
jo jeeta wo sikandar (1992)
chichhore (2019) is cool as well.
the problem is, much of the humour of these movies might be lost in translation  :(. also, you might come across a certain amount of misogyny, so please proceed accordingly!!!
i gave you an entire movie rec because i think that while we watch a movie from our own region, we don’t really see how our culture is embedded into it. but if someone, who is experiencing it for the first time, sees those movies, they can point out a lot of different things that we take for granted.
i think more than wanting other people to incorporate elements of the indian culture into their posts, what matters is trying to understand how different, yet similar a culture can be millions of miles away from you.
Also, about Bahubali!! I think Bahubali was made by absorbing a lot of the Indian (especially Hindu) epics. It has a lot of elements of Mahabharata (which is an epic I strongly recommend, not as a religious text, but because all the characters in it are deeply flawed. hence, i think it's a very realistic story.) i enjoyed Bahubali as well XD
food is a very big part of indian culture, and the variety in it is extreme. so many varying tastes that tasting a new dish feels like an experience.
we do have snakes, but not in urban areas. if you live near a forest/in an area with a lot of trees, yes, there can be snakes, but usually, the insects that cause the most nuisance are ants, lizards, cockroaches and spiders.
i think i really like math and physics because i find them interesting. there's just something about explaining the phenomena of the world with just these two tools that intrigues me. i love all sciences, and i do take avid interest in history, philosophy and political science (tho i don't express my opinions online), but i think what made me choose physics and math was the wonder i feel while studying them (i know, very cheesy). but, frankly speaking, i think it also depends on the environment you are brought up in. my family is pretty maths-y and science-y and i grew up in that environment, hence i think i developed an inclination to it.
also: if you find anything that i said wrong, please tell me and i’ll correct it!!

Hi I love your blog layout it so tidy!! Also would it be alright if I got a bnha matchup please?. My pronouns are she/her and I'm bisexual. My personality type is ISTJ, I'm a sagittarius sun, scorpio moon and libra rising. To the public I'm pretty closed off/reserved but with my friends I'm brave, loyal and love to laugh. I don't trust easily and I'm pretty cautious of everyone so I try to keep out of the way.
My hobbies include gymnastics which I did competitively and won a few medals, I also do figure skating and have leveled up pretty quickly at that. I workout everyday because even though I dont compete now I still want to improve and if anything I'm better now than I was back then.
I like indie music, horror movies mainly psychological, nature and wildlife and the peace and quiet it brings. I hate loud, busy places, untidy, dirty things and people messing up my routine.
My love language is quality time like I just wanna be around that person a lot. I think the love language that speaks to me most is probably also quality time, like the fact that they would want to be around me willingly seems so unfamiliar I love the idea of it. Also words of affirmation or physical touch, I'm awkward at giving those but receiving them would make me melt cause I'm not really used to any of it. My ideal dates are simple things like going on walks at like 3am or dancing in the livingroom or movie nights just cheap simple things like that.
hope that's okay sorry it kindof long :)

Easily, Kirishima is one of BNHA’s most easygoing, compassionate characters. His heart is big and always in the right place. Based off of your description and his own array of traits, I think he is the perfect character for you! Like, almost a little too perfect. A Sagittarius and a Libra (Kirishima’s sun sign!) are said to be very compatible and harmonious. Even better, it’s also said that people are often drawn to others who have their sun sign in the ascendant—Kirishima being a Libra sun and you being a Libra rising! To make things even more fantastic, perfect, and everything in between, Kirishima’s MBTI (according to The Personality Database) is ESFP. Guess what? ISTJ’s and ESFP’s are said to be extremely compatible! Of course, he’d find your inner demeanor to be extremely attractive. As he is naturally social, he wouldn’t mind your reserved nature and would pursue you in both friendship & romance regardless. Your outer shell would only lead him to appreciate your comical inner-self even more! He’d greatly admire your bravery and loyalty as well—it’s not something you see often anymore, after all. He’d try to bring the best out of you as naturally as possible, letting you do the same to him. Easily, he’s the most supportive boyfriend you could ever get! This man would adore you with patience, admiration, and sheer love, all with his own cheesy, dorky flair. I imagine Kirishima is careful in love, yet just as bold as the sun. He’s grounded, but on his most passionate days, his admiration can never be paralleled. You’d simply make him weak in the knees with every glance you’d spare him!
𖥸 Your music taste simply infects him. Imagine him listening to indie music with you 🥺🥺 your head in his lap as he plays with your hair- omg!! he loves to just sit and vibe with you. Nothing can compare to the fun you have on your chilliest days- he loves spending time with you in little ways like that
𖥸 Workout dates!! He’s infatuated with you for many reasons, but one of them is because you work out. The dude literally thinks it’s the coolest thing in the world and he adores working out with you. It’s easily his kryptonite lol
𖥸 Kiri has no concept of grace, so he is extremely impressed with your gymnastics and figure skating skills!! He could watch you do your thing for hours tbh. Like, slack-jawed and wide-eyed. In fact, I think he’d try to incorporate more nimbleness to his moves even though such a feat is kinda difficult when you can turn into rock. You gotta give him some credit tho- we all know he can be a little too opportunistic!! Just imagine him tripping all over himself because he wants to be nimble like you- that little blush on his face as he apologies for being a dummy- aww 💕💕
𖥸 Simply the king of casual dates. Sure, he’d love to spoil you with the stars and more, but he knows you like it calm- fr, you two are actually the cutest when it comes to staying up late and just messing around with no care in the world 💕 also, nature dates? Small picnics in the park?? I bet he’d love to go hiking with you. He likes to point out cool flowers or pretty weeds whenever you two are outside for even the shortest amount of time
𖥸 He loves watching horror movies with you.. even though they scare him a little bit LMAO- but just cuddling with you as your favorite movie plays in the background is simply heaven to him. Maybe you can turn him into a psychological horror buff!!
𖥸 He is also the king of words of affirmation~ the dude loves to remind you about how much you mean to him and how confident you make him feel within himself
You two really are couple goals imo 💕💕💕

In my opinion, I feel that Mina is the perfect match for you!! First lets get some compatible basics out of the way. Like our good friend Kirishima above, Minas MBTI is also an ESFP (according to the personality database lol). As we know, ESFPs tend to be the most compatible with ISTJs. To add onto that, Mina just so happens to be a Leo!! Leos and Sagittarius's are often compared to soulmates and having a twin flame like connection! It’s a little scary how well you two fit each other, personality dynamics and all. Though you may have been cautious and quiet at first meet, Mina most likely pestered and wiggled her way into your life! She loves making new friends anyhow, and saw no issue in going out of her way to talk to you every chance she could. Now becoming your girlfriend later on would just be an added bonus for her! You better believe she finds your bravery admirable, it drives right up her alley. The two of you would make an absolute power couple, even a fan favorite!! Often, she’d make jokes or even play along with ones that you make in return, just to be able to hear your laughter. It fills her stomach with butterflies and she’s near falling apart at the seams with every melodic giggle. Get ready to be showered in compliments and praise, that’s this girls specialty, and she’d happily fluster you any day with her sickeningly sweet words.
𖥸 Mina would probably ask you to spar with her a lot. Practicing new moves and quirk related techniques. God knows she loves staying active, and doing something she deems this fun with someone she loves. It makes the moment even more worth while. With your experience in gymnastics, you’d find that you’re able to run circles around this girl with your skill. Afterwards she’d probably offer a massage to ease any sore muscles.
𖥸 Now as much as Mina would probably prefer a night on the town as a date, she would not think twice about choosing a secluded casual option for your comforts sake. Be that stargazing or even staying in to watch one of those horror films  that you love oh so much over popcorn and sodas. (She’s actually terrified of them, and has a weak stomach, but she’d never tell you that.)
𖥸 Aimless car drives. Picture the sun setting, painting the sky in a soft pink and an orange hue flickering off of the distant buildings. Your preferred indie song blaring through the speaker while the two of you belt out the lyrics. Neither of you can hear each other over the sound of the wind rolling in through open windows, or how high she cranked the volume. You’ll definitely have to be the one to turn it back down, she can’t help but love loud music, even if the music wasn’t intended to be loud in the first place lol.
𖥸 Don’t be surprised if she comes to you one day with a gift bag in hand. Every time she goes into a store she has to come out with something that reminds her of you. She’s not even aware of it either until you point it out. This could range from something as simple as your favorite drink to a giant teddy bear that she claimed resembled you. The possibilities are endless.
𖥸 My word is she in love, infatuated even. That one night she caught you dancing about in the kitchen, probably making a late night snack, she couldn’t look away. In fact, she still thinks about it from time to time. How happy and carefree you looked lip-syncing the lyrics, in the silliest kinds of pjs you owned. She tried to sneak her way in, trying her best to not to make you jump in surprise, though she probably failed with how eager she actually zoomed in. Her love for dancing couldn’t go unnoticed here, oh no, not now. She brought you in close with a twirl under her arm, her smile the widest you’ve seen it. Her flirty nature, only for you, had her compliments laced with sugar and honey. Who knows how long the two of you spent dancing and goofing off to your playlist in that darned kitchen.
Gosh the two of you make me squeal!! There’s absolutely no way you aren’t made for each other!

butterflyslinky replied to your post “Good morning kids! We're going to see CATS the cinematic musical...”
I'll ask cause I'm on the fence--is it the type of movie a person could go see on their own, or do you need a group of (probably intoxicated) friends along to make it fun?
I mean, I’m maybe not the best person to ask because I love going to the movies alone, so I think any movie is a fun movie to see alone. That said, I went with my parents, who are in their mid-sixties, and we had a good time without being drunk or “friends” as it were (I mean I love my parents but they are not my peer/colleague group).
niennanir replied to your post “Good morning kids! We're going to see CATS the cinematic musical...”
You... do get that nearly all musical theater is crack fic? Right? Otherwise it would be opera.
You say that as if nearly all opera isn’t crack of some kind. :D
sewickedthread replied to your post “Good morning kids! We're going to see CATS the cinematic musical...”
Really want to read the review by the parents
Mum thinks it’ll win Oscars. :D She liked Skimbleshanks the best because it was an extended tap number and she’s a tap dancer, and she also liked what they did with Idris Elba’s eyes. She thinks it should get attention for “makeup” but I think it probably only counts as effects since it’s CGI. She did NOT care for Taylor Swift, thought she was flat and it was weird she was wearing shoes when most of the cats weren’t, except for ballet toe-shoes and tap shoes.
catchandelier replied to your post “Good morning kids! We're going to see CATS the cinematic musical...”
The review might say “it was bizzare and horny” but the real OGs know it was always weird and horny
Plus, I mean, actual cats are kind of weird and horny. A lot of what seems to have been read as “horny” is just like...the incorporation of cat body language.
One of my favorite moments of the whole film was a “cat” moment by Ian McKellan, and I’m glad they got at least one hairball joke in :D
ranuel replied to your post “Good morning kids! We're going to see CATS the cinematic musical...”
I went to see the traveling production and own the DVD of the London show. I'm swinging between excitement and dread they messed it up. The stage costumes did look better then the CGI but we really haven't got a decent look at the dancing yet.
I thought the dancing was great. There were a couple of duds -- Rebel Wilson didn’t do her number any favors, but it more had to do with HOW she was awkward than THAT she was awkward. I do think a lot of people thought some of the dancing was CGI, but I think the dancing itself was all human, which is pretty cool.
rsfcommonplace replied to your post “Good morning kids! We're going to see CATS the cinematic musical...”
A friend of mine and I are thinking of going too, just to throw popcorn.
See, I think that would be fun but also you should wait until the end of the run or until you can pirate and watch at home -- I know a lot of people want to go to make fun of it and I 100% get that, but the rest of the theater might be there to see it because they like Cats or musical theater or their kids or parents do. Like, I was there with my parents who very earnestly wanted to see it, and they would have been really upset if other people were spoiling their moviegoing experience. Even at 10:30 on a Sunday it was us, an elderly couple in front of us, a couple of people there on their own, and like FOUR families with kids.

SAM HAVE YOU SEEN ‘THE NINE LIVES OF CHRISTMAS’ THO???
No, I haven’t even heard of this one! I’ll keep an eye out. :D
timetravelingvampire replied to your post “My parents are literally debating what Hallmark Christmas movie to...”
Did you buy them the hallmark monopoly game? I can’t wait to see their reactions on Christmas.
OH MAN that would have been SUCH A GOOD GIFT! I didn’t think of it!

SHE WENT TO WORLD MARKET, SAM! which is where I work....
That could be it! At any rate, now we know the tiki bar shops at World Market too...
katestamps replied to your photo “A week ago some friends and I went out to a local tiki bar, where they...”
And now I have to find gingerbread cordial (holiday gnome is optional).
I have to admit I would not have been nearly as into getting the drink as I was if the gingerbread cordial hadn’t been mentioned.

THE POSITIVE & NEGATIVE; Mun & Muse - Meme.
fill out & repost ♥
Tumblr media
Mun note: I’m gonna put this below the cut cause it’s a biiiig tag. But if you do read it, hmu honestly cause I’ve love to chatting.
And if you do it? Let me know! I love learning about people’s connection to their muses, new or old.
My muse is:   canon / oc / au / canon-divergent / fandomless /
Is your character popular in the fandom?  YES / NO.
Is your character considered hot™ in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK.
Is your character considered strong in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK (Mixed impressions depending on who you ask and how you ask it I reckon.)
Are they underrated?  YES / NO.
Were they relevant to the main story?  YES / NO.
Were they relevant to the main character?  YES / NO / THEY’RE THE PROTAG.
Are they widely known in their world?  YES / NO.
How’s their reputation?  GOOD / BAD / NEUTRAL.
How strictly do you follow canon?
OG Canon, By default, up until Zack’s canonical death, I follow canon very muchly. (That doesn’t mean I’m not open to earlier plotted divergence though!) If the overall plot ends with death, then I’m alright with that, I love the handing on of the torch from Angeal to Zack to Cloud. My goal is to never minimize that. But for interactions beyond the end of Crisis Core, I have two particular verses that I absolutely adore based on already established lore and my own head-canons for how Zack would continue.
OG Canon Remake Canon, while it’s nice for options and I don’t mind it, on a technical front I think it weakens the ongoing plot for other characters who then wouldn’t have been forced to grow so much themselves. I enjoyed the remake, but regarding Zack it’s not my cup of tea. I’ll write remake by request, but it’s not my default.
SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutual.
His genuine care for those around him with unrelenting selflessness is both heartwarming -and heart-wrenching.
Zack’s journey from naivety about the world and events around him to recognizing the harm of the organization he’s been directly a part of. He grows in both substance and maturity as he’s increasingly forced to reckon with reality.
Chasing after an idea which is realized but not how he once imagined it.
While Zack is strong, he’s most certainly not the strongest. I enjoy playing with weakness.
Almost relentless optimism. How he pushes onward to continue trying to pick up the pieces. Additionally as such a genuine character and I hope that love comes through in my portrayal.
Look. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
But on a personal my muse front, despite my love for him I love putting him in situations where I get to break him down to build back up again because that’s his strength as a character.
Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?).
His early naivety and blind loyalty to ShinRa. (IMO tho, you gotta have a ‘from’ in order to have a ‘to’)
Puppy goofy himbo dummy. (At least, that’s how some people see him.)
Almost relentless optimism.
Some feel he draws away from Cloud’s story.
Just-
Look again.
What inspired you to rp your muse?
Have you ever had a time when you’re watching or playing something and there’s just a character you really identify with like, not just ‘oh, me’ - but beyond that in an almost scary way? For where I was in life and what I was going through, Zack was exactly that for me, and I fell in love with how kept pushing through.
So that was four years ago, and I RP’d him privately within friend groups. Said friends of course moved on from the fandom and I just quietly always wanted to come back to him, there were so many things I’d come up with that I hadn’t gotten to using yet in writing.
So late last year when a friend decided to get into FF7 I made my blog(s) to join them. :3 I did go on hiatus when 7R came out to avoid spoilers as I didn’t have access to a console through the lockdown in my country to play, but I’ve finally returned. (And now you have like a million blogs shgjfjkasghfd.)
What keeps your inspiration going?
On a personal note, Zack’s been an intrinsic part of my life for the past four years. Even when friend groups moved on from the fandom in waves coming and going, he’s never really gone from my life because I live in a fairly small country and he’s one of two cosplays I’m known for here in con/geek circles. (I’ve even Cosplayed him for an official event! <3)
On a writing front, honestly, as I said before, I love the way he keeps on keeping on no matter what’s thrown at him. I don’t want his journey to end. I want him to fall again and again but also to conquer those shortcomings and rise stronger.
That doesn’t have to make him the strongest in body, but in mind that makes him a personal hero for me at least so he’s forever an inspiration. Despite the labels applied to his dream, (See my URL) the pursuit as such defines him admirably.
Some more personal questions for the mun.
Give your mutuals some insight about the way you are in some matters, which could lead them to get more comfortable with you or perhaps not.
Do you think you give your character justice?  YES / NO.
Do you frequently write headcanons?  YES / NO. (I have a terrible habit of keeping most of em in my head, but they do exist. I’m trying to get better at posting them casually. I know they're good at helping prospective RP partners work out openings for interactions. ;; )
Do you sometimes write drabbles?  YES / NO. (Honestly this is usually what happens when I do try to do a HC post, It becomes a drabble incorporating it instead. Whoops?)
Do you think a lot about your Muse during the day? YES / NO.
Are you confident in your portrayal?   YES / NO.
Are you confident in your writing?  YES / NO.
Are you a sensitive person?  YES / NO.
Do you accept criticism well about your portrayal?
Criticism and Critique. Boy oh boy. That’s gonna be a pass, please.
Unsolicited criticism sucks. That’s not what I’m here for, nor many of us I expect. Miss me with that anxiety spike. I’ve done study in writing for films. I know a lot of technical stuff. But I also enjoy switching that off and allowing things to happen. I’m also a performer, and the the improvisational and spontaneous reactionary side is just as important as the plotted. I’m here for fun to explore what I want with other like minded people. Not for criticism.
‘Hey have you thought about ___’ - that’s okay. If we grow together, cool, that’s great! In fact, it kinda leads into the next question.
Do you like questions, which help you explore your character?
Yeeee! Please. Just be aware I’m sometimes slow with my inbox though I am getting better at this!
If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why?
Unless it’s something that clashes between our two muses like a death or lack-thereof, or important shared-background things that needs discussing, I don’t think there’s much reason for it to be brought up. My headcanons exist for the general purpose of ‘without outside influence, this is my default.’ - that’s it. Sometimes they just aren’t relevant.
If it’s simply ‘I don’t like this this idea’ see the next answer.
If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it?
If someone does, please don’t tell me. You can go write him yourself or find another closer to how you perceive him. My portrayal is my own, and I don’t need to conform to your idea of what Zack would do or say. Neither of us need to waste energy on this.
If someone really hates your character, how do you take it?
If it’s my muse, fine. But don’t get aggressive at me about it. I’m also a Genesis mun, so I get the rivalry. But cool your jets.
Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors?
Sure. In fact please. Honestly, @ RP partners, I don’t mind if you quietly fix em yourself. Dyslexia’s an uphill battle. I’ll often edit posts after the fact if I notice my own mistakes, so sure. But @ Readers, please don’t get at my RP partners grammar. This is consent for my writing, not theirs. Though also don’t be a pick-apart grammar police just to get to me. Have some sense about it. ;)
Do you think you are easy going as a mun?
I can be very talkative. Honestly if that surprises you despite my choice of muses with Zack and Gen then gaia help you. So uh, heads up on that. If I haven’t talked to you yet, the key word is ‘yet’ - I’m just working out where to start or for something to react to.
That’s about it, congrats for filling out!
Tagged by:  @lifedxbt tagged me for returning from hiatus so I should probably do this. :p Tagging: Uhhhhh, it big. Do if want? Yay. (It took me two hours)

rotj: my thoughts
positives and negatives. spoilers ahead
so, i wasn’t gonna write one of these but i felt i needed to get some stuff off my chest so i can move on. i was just gonna pretend this movie didn’t happen but i think i can come to eventually accept that it did now that i’ve had time to digest everything.
POSITIVES:
- honestly... from my first viewing there isn’t a lot i like. but i’m sure this will improve the more i watch the film and actually have the chance to form an opinion on more things within such a hectic onslaught of information. - i laughed. c3po and that little fixer dude were genuinely funny (to me). dio (sp?) was super cute too. tbh i never cared much for droids (my obi-wan is coming thru here) but i actually enjoyed them so that’s a win for me - very pretty film. visually spectacular.  - fast-paced. not boring for a second (to me). kept me entertained. - rey’s yellow lightsaber. i actually liked this even tho it doesn’t match up with current canon (yellow being for temple guards). it reminded me of bastila and i was just waiting for her to show it off as a double-sided saber... which i didn’t get but it still looked like it was built for it so i’ll take the win. - the idea of palpatine being powerful again but it would have been cool to see a younger version of himself - rey and ben teaming up and the intimate moment they shared which felt genuinely beautiful and was one of the highlights for me
now here’s the ISSUES i have off the top of my head, some of them having been mentioned on this blog before:
- the trio. everyone else has already said it. forced and uncomfortable. it felt like they were setting up a love triangle for the first half of the movie as well, which was weird. when they had poe and rey have those ‘moments’ or when they bickered with each other i was like ‘they better not be tryna spring up some hanleia dynamic on us for the last film between these two’ especially while also baiting finnrey (which is never touched upon again after the first half of the movie, yikes)
- towards the end of the film, i turned to the person next to me and said “this reminds me of a video game plot” - i couldn’t pinpoint exactly why that was, but it was just a feeling. and not a deep, thorough video game plot either. another reviewer said something similar. it’s just... very shallow, expository and it feels like it’s dragging you and the characters through very railroaded and forced missions/battles. i mean at the start they’re really just looking for something, going to someone, that person says they need to talk to someone else for the thing, they go to another person, etc. which is a type of mission device used in games as well. it also felt to me like one of those japanese otome games where rey is the bland female character that all the male characters fall for (poe, finn, kylo) and she gets her pick of which one she wants to romance, which was cringe.
- i didn’t hear the characters. i only heard what they were forcing the characters to say in order to progress the plot or explain the plot. the characters themselves became faceless inserts for exposition. so many times i heard a character say something and thought... that was a jarring piece of dialogue that seems both out of character and unnatural to say at that point in time.
- although i said being fast-paced could be a positive, it was largely a negative for me. at one point it felt like slide transitions were happening at minute intervals. a major plot point would be revealed and then no time is given to process, it’s onto the next major scene. this left everything feeling very rushed and messy, which i believe is due to half the film being cut for time constraints.
- each character is either twisted into an unrecognisable character, or ignored/not given the time they deserve. rey? blank slate female protag with a famous bloodline and who barely reacts to the things going on around her (leia dying, ben dying, she disregards her ‘friends’ on multiple occasions). like others, i always defended rey’s abilities, but this film is too much. she has been made a mary sue. finn? rendered nothing but the ‘friend’ pining after a girl and only briefly gets time with his own story which is never fully explored in this film by any means. poe? turned into a grumpy, seemingly jealous ‘friend’ with a shady past that felt like they were trying to make him the ‘han solo’ of the trio rather than going with what we already know about his character. leia? now this is hard, and i respect what they tried to do, but i still felt like her death could have been done a bit better rather than the quick ‘shock’ moment it was. also the stuff with luke training her is a no for me. way too shoe-horned and part of what made leia cool to me was that she was a skywalker but didn’t need to be a jedi. her powers were elsewhere. kylo? don’t get me started. rose? who? she may as well not have been in this movie with the way they ignored her character and showed how little the other characters care about her. it broke my heart.
- rey palpatine? though i’m a rey kenobi fan, i was happy with rey nobody. i liked what it stood for. i didn’t mind the idea of rey palpatine in theory, but the way they force-fed this to us in the film rather than building it up left a bad taste in my mouth and i’m going to have to pass on it. if they wanted to have her related to palpatine, they should have just made her a clone imo. it would have matched with what was being built up prior (in tlj with the clones in the cave), it would have explained her ties to the dark side, it would have completed the palpatine/skywalker poetry, and it would have still been congruent with her being a ‘nobody’ since that’s essentially what clones are seen as in star wars. also we wouldn’t have to think about the fact palpatine got laid. laboratories were already set up in jakku by palpatine. cloning itself was shown in rots anyway (snoke) so?
- although i’ve wanted ben to be redeemed... it still felt too rushed in this film. also, he does display some toxic tendencies as kylo ren towards rey (trying to manipulate her to go with him) which didn’t sit well with me but i didn’t really see ben/kylo ren in his scenes sometimes anyway, since he was also forcibly used to give exposition to us/rey. i did like his scene with his mother and father in the film but i just needed more than that to really feel his redemption rather than the quick switch we got.
- i originally wasn’t okay with the whole ‘bringing someone back to life through the force’ thing since i always liked the idea palpatine was just saying that to honeypot anakin, but decided i’m willing to accept it as a unique ability they had for each other due to their force bond. but then... ben dies anyway. and it’s done in such a way that leaves you feeling ‘wtf just happened?’. it was random, forced, didn’t feel necessary and it just... happened. no one reacted to it. he wasn’t referred to or mentioned after this. the last skywalker goes out just like that. poof. okay. so was this a shock death or was jj genuinely trying to appease people who didn’t think ben deserved redemption or to live? either way ben lived such a sad, cruel, manipulated life that his death seemed unfair and we’re all supposed to think this movie is hopeful and celebrate a few minutes later? i don’t think so. in fact, everything that happens after that scene feels incredibly uncomfortable because of the massive tonal shift.
- the kiss. ok don’t hate me. i enjoy reylo. but i honestly think the kiss wasn’t exactly... needed? maybe it was just because everything else felt so forced but it felt a little forced in this scene for me. for me, the hug ben gave rey just beforehand spoke more volumes of their intimacy. i did mention their intimate moments above as a positive, so i still like this overall moment (in addition to the moment rey heals him). but the hug spoke enough to me that it would have been nice to keep it more subtle yet obvious enough (thanks to their acting) that they cared deeply for one another. but then again, this is what i felt before i knew ben died, so. idk. i guess it would suck for ben to die without having kissed rey? how about just don’t kill ben off. have them hug instead of kiss and then leave us to fill in the gaps as they both live. how about that.
- the rey skywalker thing is embarrassing. and rey ended up alone in the desert... just how she started. i just can’t. by the time this came on the screen i was ready to leave. i only stayed because i HOPED there would be an after credits showing her on the falcon, or her training finn to be a jedi, or her speaking with any of the force ghosts (luke or ben or anakin).
- speaking of which. why were there no force ghosts in the scene where she fights palpatine? we just get voices? that scene really lacked impact and the whole fight sequence just felt blah. palpatine came back super strong and then he was gone in moments. there should have a) been force ghosts or some kind of visual presence of the jedi to help rey whether physically or just boosting morale and b) ben should have fought palpatine with her.
- why is rey alone in the desert? i honestly didn’t think this meant she was going to be a hermit until i came online and saw that’s what everyone else thought. but just... why? why is she not passing on the jedi ways she fought to keep alive? or the knowledge she has gained/kept in the sacred jedi texts she stole? surely not. surely that is her plan. surely ben saved her not just because he loved her but also because she can carry on the skywalker legacy NOT by dying alone in a desert but by training new jedi. (which, again, SHOULD HAVE BEEN FINN AS THE FIRST NEW JEDI!) or better yet, a new type of jedi that don’t follow toxic ways but that incorporate both the light and dark side of the force like she does? and calling THEM skywalkers? but nope. instead she ended up back where she started. except with less personality this time.
- i can’t talk enough about how cool it would have been to have jedi!finn at the end. talk about coming full circle from the promo baits they had for TFA of finn with the lightsaber. AT LEAST GIVE US THIS.
- the whole movie just felt like a massive disrespect to the previous film. everything rian built was trampled on, retconned or ignored. say what you want about tlj and rian, but this is what happens when you ignore or try to retcon the preceding film whether you like it or not. everything feels messy and the plots get screwed up. this movie would have been largely different (better) had they not tried so hard to pretend tlj didn’t exist. even if you didn’t like it, take the plot and mould it into something you do like. don’t just toss it aside and lose all sense of continuity between the films. i don’t blame jj for this exactly, but rather the disney committee that were too afraid to acknowledge tlj’s existence due to the reception it got from fans and thus felt the need to have jj ‘fix/retcon’ things rather than build upon/improve things.
- oh yeah hux. that happened, i guess. i thought it was weird and it kinda sucked that they did that. who cares about the new guy? general pride or whatever? no one. surely making general hux more menacing couldn’t have been THAT hard. but no. we get a rather silly death instead. alright. at least he can forever be known as the petty king of star wars.
- there’s probably more. i could write an essay but i’m getting tired of complaining already so i’m leaving it here. if you happened to read this far and want to talk about it with me some more, my DMs are open!
overall, i just hope some canon content is going to be released, either in the form of a book or a comic, that explores more of this following the movie. i want to know more about finn’s story. i want to see whether rey does stay on tatooine or whether she trains jedi. i want to see whether she communicates with ben through the force, or just, y’know, any closure on that would be nice. i want to see the director’s cut with the other half of the movie. then, perhaps, i will know peace.
