New Boruto's chapter, opinions and incongruences
Alright, it's been a while since I wrote on my blog guys so let's take a look at the news regarding the recent chapter of Boruto and everything that is currently happening within the fandom. So, what bothered me the most is the way in which they are totally nerfing characters with great potential just to give more space to the protagonist in this case (I'll post some images of the clash between Boruto and Kawaki to make you understand). Kawaki is one of my favorite characters and probably one of the best written at least until the time skip; because to make Boruto more powerful and more attractive (oh yes, it wasn't just Eida enough, Delta will also have a crush on him, everyone must love Boruto, are you kidding??) you have to somehow eclipse the other characters? Are you out of ideas or what? but oh well, we see that as soon as Kawaki gets angry and activates Karma, which consequently resonates with the other, Boruto has difficulty because he can't control his power and runs away (wait, let me understand. You know it's the your strength, you know that the enemy uses that kind of power in battle, you have trained hard over the years and you still don't know how to handle it. Exactly what kind of training have you done? I might be strange at this point, I don't know what to tell you. Then why do these two only think about clashing if they could temporarily team up against their common enemy (i.e. these Tree Jenga people who are invading the village)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let's move on, let's get to the crucial point of the chapter i.e. the discovery that Jenga's target is no longer Naruto but rather his daughter Hima as she perceives the power of the nine-tailed fox's chakra, Shikadai asks why Hima and Jenga replies that he doesn't even know what it has to do with it the daughter with the fox spirit and that the world is strange... after which the chapter ends with Hima coming face to face with a mini Kurama? it is not clear who this individual is, whether a reincarnation of Kurama or a new spirit of the nine-tailed fox, we hope to have more detailed explanations in the next chapter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, what I and not only I wonder is: how does Hima have the fox chakra? For fans it makes sense since she is NH's daughter and since she was conceived with Naruto's sperm some of his chakra flowed into her.. WTF??? I would like to remind you that in Naruto OG Naruto himself was born without any type of fox chakra inside himself but it was sealed from him by Minato (and we are talking about a son born to a jinchūriki mother so he could very well have inherited part of it as it was with the mustache) so, whatever is said there is no way to approve this theory. Hima cannot have inherited the fox chakra because she is the daughter of Naruto and Hinata. Let's move on to the second hypothesis, that is, a possible reincarnation of the bijiu (we know that the bijiu, being pure clusters of chakra, once they or their jinchuriki dies, tend to dissipate and then reform over time and re-establish the balance of the tailed beasts and up to here ok) but as we well know, already with the Byron mode Kurama himself told Naruto that all his chakra would be consumed and burned so here too there is no way that it could have reformed over time or at least not the same type of chakras. Seriously guys, people read and interpret things the way they want without worrying about logic and common sense... I understand that you like the idea of Hima with the fox chakra (yes, I admit, the idea is not bad ) but also try to make sense of things if you are a true fan because here I only see a lot of contradictions just to make Naruto's daughter more powerful out of nowhere and obviously give more prominence to the work. The only possible explanation I can give is that it is a birth of a new spirit of the nine-tailed fox which is not Kurama and which for some strange reason had remained hidden in the Ten-Tails since the individual says he must be careful if the decadedoda doesn't leak everything? But how is it possible that neither Naruto nor Kurama have ever perceived the presence of this spirit? Well, tell me what you think, maybe you can find more plausible answers. Finally, we are thinking of using Pierrot's seasonal adaptation for anime currently on hiatus (this also includes Boruto); one of the producers of the studio thinks that by using this method the profit and success in sales and popularity will be greater than that achieved by an annual anime (this was hypothesized due to the success of the Bleach and Demon slayer series which used this method) . But as I already said, these are only hypotheses, nothing is confirmed and in any case I don't think that the success and popularity of a series can depend on the type of adaptation. That's all for now... by by

Sasuke was going to die for Naruto in the first arc! Sasuke was screaming during VoTE2 because he couldn't kill Naruto calmly! By the end of Naruto he admitted how much their bond means to him! Naruto is the only one he kept in touch with after the show ended! Forget reacting to Naruto's supposed death, he's not even acknowledging it? What in the world...
😭😭 you're SO right..
And we could add to that even many, many other things like Sasuke training so hard to accomplish a goal determinedly and yet Naruto constantly gets in the way because he's his weakness! His focus shifts towards Naruto when he's around distracting him from even his fights resulting in practical mistakes whereas we wouldn't see those otherwise with Sasuke. There are contradictions alright! For example during the reunion. Hugging Naruto.. hug-ging!! Feeding him knowing what the consequences would be for him and his own goal, but not being able to stop himself regardless because.. Na-ru-to!
Tumblr media
Sasuke self sabotages his own goals for the sake of Naruto's tummy rumble. He can't even stand seeing him like that, risking the chances of training as Konoha Shinobi. A belief he has at the time which is the only way that'll make him stronger. He has to lie to Kakashi and Sakura because he's worried for Naruto's safety and it is embarrassing to say it out loud so he says he goes for a walk only to find and scold Naruto who has been training out in the woods and skipping his meal during the LoW-arc.. only for them to come back together arm-in-arm dirty and smiling, having trained together all night ;-;
He goes out of his way multiple times to protect Naruto even at times when it certainly wasn't needed.
Tumblr media
Naruto would've been fine, Sasuke already was in terrible condition and yet.. his body moved on his own to catch him anyway. Pakkun even points it out too.
There is so much dramatics and emotion during scenes with Sasuke where Naruto is mentioned later on too.. even if they're not together. He smiles fondly when he's at the 'Great Naruto bridge', he overreacts when Sai doesn't mind his business, Naruto's resolve.. speaks literal volumes.
Even in 'Gaiden', this is Sasuke's reaction to Naruto getting stabbed:
Tumblr media
even though he knows Naruto would be able to heal easily as Kurama also points out later calling him pathetic (LOL).
If anything... 'Boruto' and certainly Naruto and Sasuke as adults should've progressed and developed even more in any sense- particularly in regard to their bond.
Tbh I was kinda curious to see where 'Boruto' was going with its story because I did see a lot of potential from the first few Chapters. Technology, cheating... there is so much you can do with it!!! Aaaannnddd they completely ruined it all.
Shame.
Tumblr media
... well.. I never fully watched that scene tbh. About Kurama.. that makes me too sad. So I wouldn't know. Sasuke in that scene With Naruto on his lap, that I HAVE seen and I think that is appropriate.. not because I love.. well seeing that, but also the relief on his face was just enough, no? They have to be very carful with his expressions because showing too much doesn't suit him either- but like Nonee above said... at least acknowledge it? 😰 And then.. or anything.. something.. gosh..

Making this blog has honestly been so freeing
All my life, how I viewed myself was only through others' eyes. I acted as they expected me to, so much so that I convinced myself it was me doing it, instead of a mask I put on so much it became part of me
I was called a bear once in elementary school, and over the years more people called me one and time after time I was linked to things regarding bears, so much so that I thought I had to be a bear if people said I was, even forcing myself, when I had no identity, to attach to the humans who raised me (I'm still fairly certain the man is of bearman blood). Because if I didn't know myself, others had to know the true me, right?
I'd been a bear for years because others saw me as one so much I eventually saw myself as one, and even before joining the therian community in 2022, started thinking like bears, acting like bears, seeking bears. In high school, I was listening to bear vocalizations and clicked the distressed cub one and had to stop immediately because I got such vivid memories of a worried bear mother running through a forest looking for her cub, the resulting panic attack making me sick for the rest of the day, that I thought it had to be a former life instead of maybe a random memory from something or someone else rather than my own, that was triggered by the sound
And it's like that with so many identities. I cling to what others see me as, and want me to be, changing myself for them. The me of today is made of what others wanted me to be and do, expected me to be and do. I changed myself so others would like me and to fit in, and lost myself in the process. I think even being a dragon, or rather the dragon equivalent of a polar bear, was still clinging to it, even badger was clinging to the bear
But fox? Nobody has ever called me one. And yet, I've found foxes all the time, ever since I was a kit. Most of all, foxes and kitsune/"spirit foxes" as the West would call them, even if they are one and the same. First was Kyuubi/Kurama in Naruto. Then in movies, like Yobi the Five-Tailed Fox. In books, one that particularly spoke to me when I read it in elementary school, being "Le renard qui cherchait le printemps", the story of an arctic fox born completely white, rejected by his family because he stood out too much in the middle of his littermates and could potentially attract danger, helped by an old crow to look for a place he can be happy and safe. Video games, loving Vulpix and Ninetales since I saw them in Pokémon HGSS, then Zorua (and Zoroark) when it was first shown to this world, and both regional forms, or Ara Haan from Elsword being one of my mains
And over the years I kept regularly looking again and again for anything with kitsune/"spirit foxes", manga, anime, movies, books, video games, music, even today. I didn't know why I loved them. I just knew I did, and they felt like family, and even Mama from when we first indirectly came in contact over 15 years ago was inherently linked to them. I was never able to answer why they were my "favorite yokai" because they just were. I've never particularly felt an attachment to the western view of foxes, either. It feels off
But. Loving to trick, prank and scare humans. Hiding oneself behind a mask or an illusion. Never actually feeling like a human but only like something else disguising as one, appearing normal but cast out for feeling off. Never feeling a sense of belonging anywhere with humans, only with animals and anything other than human. Feeling, knowing deep somewhere, those supposed to be my family never actually were. Only Mama. The closest thing to a home, the old, traditional Japan I read about in books, saw in manga and video games two or three centuries ago or more. The familiarity of foxes through an eastern lens, of Oinari-sama, and even though I'm not religious in the human sense, Shinto does seem similar to my own beliefs, from what I know of it
Not a bear because others see me as one. Not draconic because of the Great Goddess being in my body. A fox because my soul knows, it's what it's telling me, and has been ever since I was a kit, but I couldn't understand, convinced I couldn't be what others didn't see me as. Now I feel stupid because if I'm using an illusion or transforming, appearing human, of course humans can't see what I really am

I’ve been rewatching Naruto Shippuuden. Simply because the whole anime finally has German synchronization and I can finally watch the whole deal. But I don’t know where I stopped due to that, so I’m rewatching until then.
It feels weirdly nostalgic. The pre-timeskip is definitely more nostalgic and meaningful to me, but Shippuuden is starting to give real follow-up vibes.
However... I didn’t intend to be taken by nostalgic feelings. I finally want to see the rest of the scenes with Kurama and how the hell all the friendly shenanigans with him developed. The German dub never got that far, it was fucking frustrating. Especially because I always loved that cocky devil attitude of his.
I was mad for the longest time when I found out. Like, an evil monster degraded to some tsundere. Some... circumstances made me take that personally. Thinking that could not be possible, that it must have been really stupid development.
I never looked deep into it. Always picked up snippets here and there, of people drawing fanart and giving their 2 cents. But I want to change that now. I finally want to see the full development. The complete reasons. The whole interactions. Give me the whole development, the whole story, all the dialogs. It’s frustrating to want that it so badly, but the anime pacing is just so fucking bad.
However... I had read about how Boruto treated him. Since I heard so much bad stuff, I just read the summary on the wiki after reading about his death, which shocked me a lot.
After so many years. Naruto has been going since my youth. It played a major role in my mental development. Thus reading how they killed off Kurama was devastating. It seemed so pointless. And I’m hoping that some background information from Shippuuden will hopefully make me interested in watching Boruto, maybe. I already know how Shippuuden ends. I know the main plot points throughout the whole show. But I’m still determined to pick up tones that shape up everything more consistently for me.
Because what I’ve heard so far, I can totally understand the anger toward the development. I just have one major issue with all the voices. They mostly care about the human cast. Yet I also saw that the Bijus do play a major role. And that’s the part that interests me personally more than the human characters, but that I never see discussed much. The Bijus get portrayed with feelings, can speak the human language, and get recognized as a being that deserve similar respect. So why the fuck are they not talked about much? That is something that I’m very much interested in to find out when watching Shippuuden.
Did they get way less screentime than I’m thinking, because I was so focused on them, thus the content seemed much bigger thanks to the fans? Or do a lot of the fans just completely ignore that matter in favor for the human cast? Or is just a general favor of them being more relatable, because they have human shapes?
I’m not saying that the human cast doesn’t deserve the attention. But I’m of the opinion that the Bijus deserve the same kind of attention, due to their role.
Due to the lack of attention, I’m prepared ot get disappointed by abadonment of the plotpoint. Or maybe abadonment is a bit too harsh of a word, but to only treat it as the actual stupid plotpoints that I always thought it would.
I want to convince myself that I can still project the development of the co-existence with the Biju into my current life, due to nostalgic feelings. But I’m prepared to be disappointed in that regard. I know it’s a very selfish wish, something that I developed in my own head, thus there’s nothing wrong with it developing differently if the author intended it differently.
However. It should still make sense. The way the Bijus are introduced, they definitely deserve more attention and respect later on. That’s the least I’m hoping for.

Kurama Falls for You | HC
Tumblr media
A/N: Unedited headcannon/ drabble type thing, I might consider editing in the future. It’s my first post so I hope it’s okay ! >////<
Summary: Basically what it would be like for Kurama to fall for you! ♡
Warnings: None ! Fluffy baby
Tumblr media
First he regards you much in the same way he has all human women
Sure you’re cute. But a lot of girls are cute. The main difference being that you didn’t blatantly fawn over him the way they always did.
You had a life outside of him. You had interests, a family, friends. You were able to go whole conversations without turning to include him or even talk about him at all.
It was curious. Even so, it’s not like he thought of himself as the center of the universe anyway.
It started after he made a simple joke. He’s always making those subtle jokes to himself. They usually go over everyone’s head; Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Botan not exactly being the intellectual type, and Hiei of course occasionally getting it, but not being the type to laugh anyway. But this time you were there hanging with the group. He laughed to himself as usual, only this time looking up to meet your gaze. Finding that coy smirk and a small giggle. That eye contact electrifying. A little secret that only the two of you were in on.
He starts to seek you out for conversation after that. Knowing that no one could really be his equal in intellect, he opens the floor to more abstract thinking. Creative critical thinking.
And you’re weird. Oh, you’re super weird. Who even comes up with that type of stuff. Oh, but you’re so unique. In all his 200 years of living as a demon (and 25 as a human), no one has ever made him laugh as hard as you. Or come up with as many unique, creative, weird-ass ideas as you. No, you’re totally different. A complete freak. Just like him.
He usually doesn’t like opening up to anyone, about his former or current life even.
But he can’t help telling you everything, just knowing you’ll have a unique take on things he had always considered so mundane. You’re like judgement-free therapy.
He starts finding small ways to touch you. The more he gets to know you the more your skin starts to feel like a magnet to him. At first its just the graze of your fingers as he hands you something. Resting his hand on the small of your back to guide you somewhere. Brushing the hair out of your face. Resisting the urge to cup your face and pull your mouth closer to his.
And he’ll catch his thoughts straying like that. You become so tempting to him. But he’s not the type to take things the easy way. No, he’d rather play in this little limbo for as long as he can until either his resolve breaks and he takes you, or he ultimately loses interest. His little plaything.
You start to pick up on the strange way Kurama’s been acting.
You love hanging out with all the guys, even Hiei can be fun sometimes. But there’s something different about Kurama. He can follow along with all the quick witted comments you make, even adding on to them. Sometimes a conversation among the group will end up with you two going on and on about something without even realizing that the others are just staring at the two of you in your own little world.
He has common sense. Something you think a majority of people are lacking in these days. And he’s a bit of a jokester; while he seems like someone who should be the voice of reason, the practical one, the parent of the group, he often does silly things, almost like he’s hoping to get caught or find himself in trouble. What a troublemaker, you think to yourself with a smirk. Surprised to see that no one else has caught on. It was his sense of humor that first caught your attention about him.
He occasionally plays little pranks on you. Like messing with you while you’re eating, tripping you up while you’re walking, or crashing your selfies. No one believes you though.
“Kurama? There’s no way! He’s not the silly type. He’s too smart for that shit!”
He gives you those innocent bright green eyes, “I’m sorry if I’ve caused you any harm (Y/N), but Yusuke is right, I couldn’t possibly have done those things.” He gives you that coy, fox-like smirk once Yusuke’s back is turned.
You glare at him with your own little smile and a shake of the head, vowing to get him back.
It seemed like a little harmless flirting at first. Genuinely enjoying each other’s company.
Things took a turn when he overhead someone bad mouthing you in the hall. A coworker or classmate. You were in the other room, listening to them talk their shit and tell each other about how much of a whore you were making of yourself spending all that time with Suichi. How you were such a freak, a weirdo, a slut, just trying to get into the boss’s pants. Fat, ugly, stupid (Y/N).
Normally you would have stormed in there and called them on all their bullshit. But this time you just listened. Stirring your coffee from the break room, a small earshot away. Tears forming in your eyes as you realized you were truly alone. And no one could ever possibly like you.
That is, until you heard Suichi’s voice. The cold, demonic look in his eyes sent shivers down their spine. They could never possibly know you. They could never hope or dream to be as brilliant as you, as gorgeous as you. He went on and on defending your honor, commanding them to leave and never fucking say your name again before he did something he would regret.
As you heard the sound of their footsteps as they ran off, you turned the corner to enter the hall where Kurama was standing, a bit stunned to see you. “You...Kurama...” you sniffed.
He was by your side in a second, cupping your face and brushing a tear away with his thumb. His green eyes as hard as steel. “I won’t let anyone talk about you like that.” There’s a moment of hesitation where you’re just looking into his eyes, memorizing the features of his face, before he presses his lips against your forehead and releases you to walk away.
You bite your bottom lip. You might like Kurama.

I heard there were rumors about Naruto being developed into seinen after Shippuden. Wouldn't that have been wonderful? I think it was such a wasted opportunity for another amazing experience. We wouldn't have any child marriages, or that recycled bs Boruto. And a challenge for Kishimoto. Although I am not sure about that last one, he kind of lost the plot towards the end there.
But even so, what a wasted opportunity.
What's your take? What could have been the implications of that?
Am just going to take this ask as an heartful rant!!!!!! 😊😊😊😊
Just because of this ask, I decided to dig deeper into his past interviews and found things that even confirmed my opinions even stronger.
Damn you!!!! Kishimoto!!!!
Thanks to you @sneezemonster15 🤩🤩🤩. LOL. Because When your speculation becomes true, you will experience some satisfaction which is immeasurable.
[[Anything I am going to cite from an old interview, after this line of the post is something I got to knew only today. Which means I never knew about these interviews before. Probably SNS shippers knew about these long back but to me it’s a new thing.]]
I heard there were rumors about Naruto being developed into seinen after Shippuden. Wouldn't that have been wonderful?
I never heard of such development and even if they do, they already did a lot of damage in the name of Boruto. And I don't think they can tell anymore story after Shippuden in a convincing way.
For me, Shippuden is in and of itself looks like a big seinen based Manga because I believe there were certain themes which were told in part 2 that are simply not suitable for a 12 year old to comprehend. Even I was overwhelmed by such plots because it really questioned my world view.
I mean, what can a 12 year old understand about Hatred or World peace which Nagato planned to implement or Itachi's pain? Yeah, there may be very few who could understand but majority don’t and hence we could see some part of fandom who still thinks ‘Sasuke should have left alone and made to start a new Village as a Revolution, or he should’ve destroyed Konoha to dust’. Any mature audience who consumed various media and have a broad world view would never spout such nonsense. Because the real world wouldn't work that way.
he kind of lost the plot towards the end there.
He didn’t actually. I believe he was made to create that Kaguya plot as a thread to continue Borutoverse. It may not be his idea. I am just speculating. Because Kishi is a damn genius in dropping threads much earlier in the story.
Example, Uchiha Madara.
When Sasuke and Naruto battled in VoTE1, I was wondering about the statues as to who might they be?. Then Kakashi slightly hinted us that the statues represents the men who created Konoha, but they were fighting until the very end for some reason. Similar to how Naruto and Sasuke fought there. And when Madara’s name was dropped for the first time when Sasuke suppressed Kurama, it just got only better.
So, I think Kaguya was a plot which was created right when Naruto was decided to pair up with Hinata and have a baby who will lead the Next Generation. When the series was going on and on about Sharingan, all of a sudden it took a U-Turn towards Byakugan. I was like, ‘Who the fuck cares about Byakugan anyway?’
Then it all made sense after looking at the abomination called ‘Boruto’, where all the Aliens were seen having Byakugan. So, It feels like he lost the plot. But I really think he was forced to.
So far, whatever I wrote till now was my observation.
That Damn Kishimoto gave an interview long back which proved my hunch right.
Tumblr media
So, You see, he was never interested in a sequel series to happen. He was just forced to.
Do you know what was the real ending he aimed for?
In many of my posts, I wrote about how SNS was a carefully constructed bond which Kishimoto paid a lot of attention to. I mean, there’s no way we can call the chapter 698 as a Retconned one. Every clues and hints were already there.
It seems that the bastard confessed about this 15 years ago, in 2006 Shonen Jump Interview and again in 2015 NYCC comic con.
He didn’t talk about Ships and shits in any of these interviews. He already planned the ending long back when he finished Part 1. The ending with Naruto and Sasuke doing Reconciliation Seal with Hashirama and Madara statues by visualizing everything into details and that too in freaking 2006.
[[Click the picture to see the full view]]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reconciliation of Naruto and Sasuke was something Kishi planned long back after finishing part 1. He even visualized all the panels in detail and that's the ending he was striving towards.
It seems, he never planned about pairings and stuffs ahead as many shippers would like to claim. I am not saying he planned SNS as the endgame couple either. But I honestly think, Kishi wished for an ending similar to Chapter 699. Like without any pairing trash, finishing off with Naruto and Sasuke sharing their dreams and hopes together.
And this is what I’ve been screaming in all my posts... That I speculate, I guess, I believe and so many similar words... that Kishi always wanted to finish with Chapter 699 and Chapter 700 feels like an afterthought.
But anyways, with Studio persuaded him into pair up his Main Characters, he was asked to write Boruto Script for one last time and it seems, that’s the only movie where he wrote the entire screenplay from A to Z. He said that Boruto movie is the ‘Pinnacle of his career’. Does it mean, ‘The Last’ movie was not his pinnacle, eh???
And what do I always scream about Boruto series in every posts?
That I feel like Naruto and Sasuke seems to Babysit Boruto like a parent.
And that’s what he wanted to finish as the last chapter of Naruto.
Tumblr media
I mean throughout the movie, there were no trace of Hinata and Sakura playing any major role in their Child’s life, instead Sasuke is seen talking fondly about Naruto to his Son, I mean Naruto’s Son. So, If he envision drawing 2 guys taking care of a child as the last chapter, then what was he trying to say?
This Kishimoto is just too sinister!!!
And it seems, he dissed ‘The Last’ movie subtly in his own words. Like almost he claims he had no part in that movie. Well, I always had my doubt regarding that movie. Never expected Kishi would say this.
Couple of days ago, I made a post about, how Kishi never gave 2 fucks about Sakura from the beginning. I analyzed that post based on my observation by carefully reading through panels in the initial chapters and his motivations to draw the panel in a certain way. That gave me an idea of what Kishi’s style of designing a character. I never knew about this Interview thing, when I wrote that post.
It seems, in an Interview, he pretty much confirmed my view about him.
Tumblr media
Kishi’s assistant was posed with a question, ‘How every character, no matter how bad they are, gets redeemed in some way?’
To which he answered, ‘Before even making a first appearance, Kishi will lay out how he wants the character to be, what it’s personality traits are, what was it about to do.’
So, Kishi really never planned to make Sakura redeemable. Her fate was sealed when she unveiled her grand dream in chapter 4 before her teammates.
What I would like to conclude is,
Kishi developing anything after Shippuden will not have his full heart. So, that development based on Seinen may not be true.
Kishi planned Chapter 698 long back when he completed Part 1. He even visualized every panels about how it is going to be. So, probably Chapter 699 is where Kishi intended to end the series. Hence, the abomination you were made to see in Boruto is not his idea.
He never planned about pairings unless he was asked to. Hinata was the popular one and he just went with it. It’s not like he always intended for Naruto to end up with Hinata.
Tumblr media
When he was asked to write a story about Boruto, he envisioned Boruto movie as the final chapter of Naruto series, if only he had the opportunity to draw this as a manga. In this movie, Naruto became an Hokage, Sasuke is a Shadow Hokage, Naruto’s son was adopted by Sasuke. Hinata and Sakura were the bench warmers.
It seems to me that Kishi somehow wants to place Naruto and Sasuke as the face of this series towards the end. He knew that he can't make them as an official couple and when things didn't go as he planned he made them into an unofficial couple who takes cares of a boy with all the care.
Geez!!! I wish I were wrong😏😏😏😏. But all these interviews proves that I was right about many things without even realizing it was there.

Kurama: A fearsome and cruel character?
I want to talk about how people view Kurama as a character and enemy throughout the series. I found a thread on reddit that can be found here. And while I mostly agree that Kurama is the most dangerous “non-villain” character in YYH, there are some things I highly disagree with and I want to explain them with phrases the users said and why I disagree with it.
(Please note, that I just want to share my view of Kurama and why I don’t agree with some of the points regarding of (maybe their lack of knowledge behind these scenes) the situation they called out for Kuramas “rutheless” and showing no mercy. I don’t want to attack or offend any of the posters of reddit or people who share the same opinion of Kurama, I just want to clarify some points that didn’t get mentioned)
Secondly, he's ruthless. While Kurama might seem like an intelligent man, one who is good with words, he's easily the least sensitive non-villain character in the series. Kuwabara probably takes the spot as the most sensitive and biggest heart out of the crew, even Hiei has his sensitive moments with his sister and Mukuro and has a great arc that develops his humanity, and Yusuke was never really lacking humanity in the first place despite being a delinquent. He still has a sense of justice. But Kurama...he's straight up asked in the Dark tournament if he believes in mercy and the dude just straight up said..."no"
I agree that Kuwabara has the biggest heart and even Hiei shows some mercy sometimes, but the user totally leaves out, that Kurama has a really big heart for his family and his friends, and this friends include Yusuke and the others. Kurama would never let them get hurt without getting angry and punish the enemy for hurting his friends. He also had some human nature moments from the moment he met Yusuke for the first time. Hiei and Kurama are both influenced by Yusukes kindness and learned to understand humans. And let’s not forget, that the person in the example, where Kurama didn’t showed mercy, was Roto. The filthy little bastard that used Kuramas mother / family to take advance in battle. And if there is one thing, we have learned about Kurama: Do. Not. Fuck. with. his. mother. Or family. Don’t do this. He’ll lose all his good natured sides if you put someone in danger, that Kurama is bond with. Let’s be honest here, it’s just natural to protect the ones you love. Everyone would react the way Kurama react when his family is put in danger. Kurama hadn’t killed Roto, if he hadn’t pulled this dirty trick. Kurama has mercy. He really has and it’s shown several times while he fought. He even says to one of his enemies: “I’ll help you… But not by death, this world has enough of that. You can keep your life as long as you change the way you live it. It’s never too late, believe me.” Kurama even says it: It’s never too late to change, he went through this change aswell. Just because he rarely shows mercy with his enemies is just because his enemies were threats that has to be rid of.
He pretty much kills everybody he comes in contact with too, there really is no mercy.
Genbu dies. The only person in the Dark Tournament that he doesn't kill is Ura Urashima and that's because someone kills him first. He makes Kaito lose his soul in the word game, kills the game master...
There's a lot of people Kurama has killed, when they could of been spared in some way. To be fair, not a lot of the people he faces deserves mercy, as they either are in a situation where death is the only way out, or they're threatening his mother, but the point still stands.
Hiei was capable of showing mercy to a man who beat and tortured his sister, of whom he swore his life to protect. Kurama hasn't ever shown that kind of mercy.
He doesn’t kill everybody. Genbu is a bad example, everyone of the Sacred beasts died. Besides.. almost every enemy the group faced died o_O Thats the nature of these old shonen anime. Killing your enemies. I don’t like this handling of enemies but.. you can’t blame Kurama for killing his enemies when everyone killed their enemies too. It was just.. how the show handled antagonists. He also didn’t killed Gama, Gama died from blood loss and exhaustion because he wanted to attack Kurama with his blood to make him weak for his next fight. Hell, Kurama even warned him about his attacks: “No, don’t. You will die, when you continue like this.” Does that look like “he has no mercy” to you? I can’t really remember the case with Kaito, but I absolutely guarantee that he didn’t wanted to kill the Game Master boy. He felt terrible afterwards (and if we face the truth, he had no other choice as to kill the boy. It was either him or the boy and if Kurama had died at that phase, the others weren’t able to stop Elder Toguro. Speaking of which, Kurama had no mercy with him because he made him “kill” a child. That’s the main reason why Kurama seemed to have no mercy when he trapped Toguro in the eternal torture plant. And not because Kurama is a sadistic asshole who enjoys killing and making others suffers. All his “merciless” actions came from emotional decisions and only shows how much he cares for what he does and what others do. Kurama never killed someone as “non-chalantly” as Hiei killed Zero in the Dark Tournament. And ... about “Hiei showing mercy to the man who beat and tortued his sister”.. Uhm.. Nope. Hiei would’ve beaten him to death if Kurama hadn’t intervened by telling Hiei, that it’s forbidden for a demon to kill a human and the punishment from Koenmas father would be so frightening that even Hiei stopped his personal vendetta. That’s what actually happened during those episodes.
I feel like the comments are cut short in only showing Kuramas resulted actions and not why he acted this way in the first place.
I won’t say the people are completely wrong, Kurama is a quite complex and mysterious character. But he is not evil. He cares for his friends and he even cares for humans, like he even decided not get attracted to humans anymore after what happened to Maya, a person who was in love with him, but he didn’t loved her back. Despite that he didn’t loved her, he thinks it’s his own fault that she was dragged into this and to save other humans from being used against him, he decided not to get close to them anymore. That actually sounds quite compassionate and kind.
Of course, he’ll show his enemies another side of him. A more cruel side, but only because his enemies are pure evil. He never even fought someone who was at the “good” side, aside from Yusuke at the beginning. And if we recall what happened, he haven’t even fought him. He begged Yusuke to let him have the mirror until he wished for his mothers life and then giving it back and hand himself in. All other of his enemies tried to kill him and were evil. It is his right to defend his life and showing no real mercy when his enemies don’t have mercy too. He may be a good guy, but that doesn’t mean he is naive enough to let an evil and dangerous creature live until something happens.
I dunno, maybe my thoughts are just because I like him, but.. You know guys, I’ve been told that I have a very good grasp for characters and portray them In-character (Canons and even OCs that are not mine. I wrote several commissions for people and I only had a briefing of the OC and they said I did an amazing job in writing their personality. So.. maybe my grasp for Kurama is not bad either..), so I hope my opinion makes sense.
It’s just not true that Kurama is more ruthless as Hiei. Kurama is the reason why Hiei is not that merciless anymore.

Anon Request
Tumblr media
Hi! I’m incredibly sorry I got to this so late but I am so excited to get started on this, thank you for requesting! (Gifs are not mine)
Also warning, there may be the occasional swear words.
Mizuki:
Tumblr media
Alright, Mizuki is known for having some sort of obsession over things and people that he likes.
Especially when he deems them cute.
Especially x2 when he knows that that they’re here to stay with him.
So when he meets his s/o for the first time, he immediately notices your height first. I mean you’re so cute???
He also imagines you as his own personal pocket pet that humans are always gushing about? Like, he’s tempted to turn you into one of them.
Then he realizes that’s creepy and he’s not trying to do that since he’s learning from Nanami so…
He’s very bubbly and openly shows his enthusiasm whenever you come around the shrine with Nanami.
He absolutely loVeS the height difference between you and him. I mean, he’s 5'8 which he doesn’t consider very tall so to find a guy that’s shorter than him with looks to boot? He’s in.
He tries not to get overzealous when talking about his life story since he doesn’t want you to get scared of him.
He purposely left out the part where he trapped Nanami in his own God’s shrine but you knew anyway.
He likes to hold your hand and compare their sizes because he finds that interesting that yours may or may not be significantly shorter than his.
He teaches you how to play the flute in the most cringeworthy way possible like when he puts his fingers on top of yours while he’s behind you?
Yeah, cringeworthy but slightly sweet.
He loves to hover over you when you’re doing something like cooking or reading a book without you noticing just so he can scare you.
That little shit
He occasionally likes to scoop you into his arms for a hug and then randomly lift you up because he’s feeling extra that day.
Or maybe he just had a bad day.
Speaking of bad days, he always likes it when his s/o clings to him for a bit and reassures him that they’re not leaving since, again, attachment issues.
Mizuki, although obsessive at times, doesn’t actually get too jealous of when you hang around other guys or girls.
I mean, he wouldn’t like it if you spent more of your time with them than him but he’s not stingy with you, if that makes sense lmao.
But he definitely wouldn’t allow you to hang around Tomoe and Kurama too much. Having Tomoe’s scent on you is enough, he doesn’t need that crow’s scent on you as well.
I don’t know, apparently scent is important to him and his scent on you also sort of repels other demons and/or akashi from getting too close.
Kanato:
Tumblr media
Ok, hear me out.
Kanato is 5'4. I’m not saying there aren’t any guys under 5'4 but they’re rare to find
So if he does encounter any male below his height, he is immediately amused. (And somewhat interested, let’s be honest.)
If you aren’t, that’s ok. You still get his attention somehow. If you’re obnoxiously loud, your style is interesting, or you’re great in the art like writing or singing, you’ll get him interested to some extent.
I feel like Kanato is one of the last of the brothers to accept he’s even remotely interested in men in that regard. Like, borderline homophobic.
Honestly it probably stems from something incredibly superficial like he doesn’t find men, “conventionally cute.”
When he does eventually come to terms with it, he’d probably invite them over for a tea party with sweets and tea.
Given that it would be you playing butler because he’s suddenly found of having a cute guy serving him.
He’ll be the type of guy to ask you out by threatening you so…not entirely romantic but if you like the dude, I won’t judge.
The relationship is not so toxic(?) It’s just where one is more high maintenance than the other and so you kinda have to bend over backwards a lot.
I mean, he does like you but it’s just different? He either can’t show it properly or does not show it at all.
Admittedly, there are times where he just disregards teddy’s existence in exchange for cuddling you when he’s tired.
You also coax him into sleeping earlier so you could cuddle. (He’ll complain and thrash about like a child but he does it less the more you ask.)
He enjoys your body temperature way too much.
Might even sneak in a little nibble since he liked your warmth way too much to the point he wanted to feel more.
Plus, your size makes it perfect for him to cuddle you. To him you’re not too big and not too small, just right for him.
It will probably take a while before you can actually kiss him or anything.
When it does happen though, expect it to be messy and maybe one or two of his brothers peeping in his room to watch you two.
They’ll probably photograph that, just saying.
Tamura:
Tumblr media
Warning, slight ns¿fw ahead
Lmao, you gave me the power of choice so here he is. (This entire post will probably get taken down because of this gif ffs.)
Since he’s gay in canon, or just generally is comfortable with guys in every sense of the word, I thought he’d be the most likely love to have a short s/o.
I feel like Tamura is the type of guy that absolutely loves anyone shorter than him and will tease the ever loving shit out of them. If they’re quiet and reserved or really loud, outgoing and a tease, you’ve probably got yourself a blue-haired shark after you.
He’s also a tsundere type so he definitely won’t be the one to initiate any type of conversation between you two.
Of course, let’s say you came to their, “after school club” during visiting hours, he’d be super over-protective because he feels like you probably didn’t know what their club was for.
And now that the other members know who you are, they won’t leave you alone since they know for a fact their little Tamu likes you.
Toono is probably a great friend for you since you’re in the same class.
So is Yaguchi.
You’ve known Yaguchi since you were kids so you know the real, “Yacchan.”
You also know Kashima which is pretty cool for you since he’s a great friend and confidant but not so cool for poor Tamu-chan.
If you do like Tamura, it would be an interesting scenario for the rest of Yaribu to witness.
You like Tamura and are jealous of Yacchan while Tamura likes you and is jealous of Kashima.
You hang around Kashima mainly because you’re both pretty new to the whole, “liking boys” scene and tell each other your insighits.
Tamura has no excuse to talk to you but with the help of Toono and Kashima, they both secretly pull the strings to make you see each other more than before.
When you do start going out, it’s a little hard for him since he wants to be loyal to you but he kind of needs to do his business in the club.
But if you assure him it’s fine, he’ll be wary but at least he has your consent.
He kind of abstains from sex? He probably only uses toys now on others instead of actually giving them a good pegging.
If it does start to get a little out of hand, like Tamura still doesn’t serve for the club properly, Akemi will probably force you to be recruited.
He doesn’t really like initiating a lot of the romantic or affectionate stuff but he does like it when you give him little kisses here and there throughout the day
or quick hugs,
Or just a simple affectionate touch on his face to assure him that the day will pass by fast and you’ll see him later.
There would definitely be a time where his s/o told them they’d have, “a fun time” when they got to their dorms.
Turns out they were just going to watch a movie.d
Is Tamura disappointed? Yes.
But will he wait until you’re ready? Fuck yeah.
~○~○~○~○~○~○~○~○~○~○~○~○~○~○~○~○~
Thank you for requesting! This was so fun to write but it’s my first time writing for male readers. Feel free to critique it if you find something too off and I’d be glad to change it.
Requests are open folks!

Note
I want to ask, even though this has nothing to do with your story, though I’m a huge fan of lucky child and daughters of destiny, I’m curious do you have any pointers on how to write for Yoko? I feel as though you had his demon side down pact when you wrote him in daughters of destiny. I’m stuck on my own story with him and Kuronue. I feel as though I’m getting neither one right.
So the good thing about Kuronue is that he’s a pretty underdeveloped character since he literally only appeared in the YYH full-length movie, AND most of his appearances are actually an impostor (which means he might not be 100% in character, anyway) OR take place in a warped memory of Kurama’s that isn’t actually accurate to what occurred in his past... so however you write him, you can pretty much say it’s in-character because no one really knows what Kuronue’s personality is supposed to be like in the first place. I’d focus on crafting your perfect version of Kuronue rather than focusing on what others would consider in-character. This is good news!
Youko Kurama is a little more fleshed out, which means he’s a bit tougher to write insofar as accuracy goes. But the good thing is that he, too, also doesn’t appear in YYH except for a handful of times, and we see very little of him from his pre-Shuichi days. (AKA, his present-day appearances might be suffering from Shuichi’s  influence, so who’s to say it’s accurate to his Olden Days Self, anyway?) Many writers rely on fanon and fandom-accepted headcanons to piece his personality together, and they’re not wrong to do so. In fact, doing so comes with many advantages, because it means that you have some wiggle room when it comes to his characterization.
I personally went about characterizing him by reverse-engineering his personality using present-day-Kurama’s personality as a starting point. The present-day Kurama is pretty soft-spoken (AKA he gets quiet when he’s angry, rather than yelling), very smart, cares deeply for his friends, has a tongue-in-cheek and understated sense of humor, will do whatever it takes to win (although he’s got a conscience; see his fight with Amanuma) and is pretty humble (or rather, he’s not a braggart and can admit when he’s wrong or beaten).
So the question becomes this: Which of these behaviors did he learn from his human experience, and which ones were present before he died and transplanted his soul into a human body? Strip away the humanity, and all that remains is Kurama’s demonic self.
The intelligence is common to both of them. So is the ruthlessness when it comes to winning, not to mention his quick wit.
And what’s different? Personally, I think he learned humility AFTER his demise, because his death proved he wasn’t the high and mighty legendary bandit he thought he was. Youko Kurama probably has more arrogance than present-day Kurama.
I think he learned his kindness and loyalty from his human life. He pretty easily betrayed Yomi, after all. Youko likely makes decisions and alliances based on what benefits him, rather than on what benefits both himself and his friends. He’s got a self-serving streak, in that regard.
Kurama’s humility and understated sense of humor were probably developed in his human life. Youko is more likely to rub his victories in his adversary’s faces and taunt them with his superiority. They’re both very quick-witted and sharp with their words, but Youko is more likely to use them in a transparently mocking way (see Youko Kurama ‘Bang!’ insult during the Karasu fight and present-day-Kurama’s comparatively gentle tongue-in-cheek remarks when he pokes fun at his friends).
And his conscience? Probably not something he had a lot of in his old life. Where present-day-Kurama can make the hard calls (like killing Amanuma) his old self likely wouldn’t hesitate or feel remorse afterward the way present-day-Kurama did after he killed a child to save the world.
There are many more traits we could go over, but I think the following equation will pretty much steer you down the right path when it comes to Youko Kurama’s characterization:
[Kurama] - [Human Influence] = Youko Kurama
Tumblr media
I hope this helps, and thanks for the awesome ask!! Best of luck on your story; rooting for you! ♥

Fall Into Me
Becoming Open and close is a series of collisions. Hiei hates the journey. (about 2.500 words. friendship/gen)
*****
They hadn't known each other that long, or at least he hadn't known them all of them that long. He had only known them as a group for one mission, and honestly, that was enough to have Hiei wishing he had never accepted the deal from Koenma to avoid some time in hell.
Hell would be less annoying.
Glancing a sideways glare at Kurama, he wondered privately how the fox wasn't losing his mind at his other two teammates' very existence.
He had been a human for too long perhaps.
Hiei closed his eyes at the sound of Yusuke and Kuwabara laughing, the two pushing against each other in the late light of the day. The reasons why Hiei was growing slowly more aggravated continued in their childish antics, noisily bantering with one another with no regard to their other exhausted teammates.
"Aren't you two tired? It's late and we've got a bit of a walk to get back to civilization tomorrow," Kurama asked, tone light and eyes dancing.
'Of course, he's amused by the nonsense,' Hiei thought darkly, glaring at the redhead for all he's worth.
"Ah sorry Kurama, we bothering you?" Yusuke asked, digging his elbow into Kuwabara's back, the human yelping at a startling high pitch.
"No," Kurama said smiling smoothly, "But I can hear Hiei about to implode from here."
Hiei's eyes snapped open, and he glared in Kurama's direction, the man waiting for his gaze with a smile, and twinkling green eyes. He could feel Kuwabara's and Yusuke's sudden abrupt, and rapt attention, curious startled eyes looking over at him. Hiei sighed getting up, too tired to endure any of these shenanigans for another moment.
Kuwabara was giggling like a baboon behind him, and Yusuke called after, "Ah, Hiei! Don't go! We'll be quiet!"
The laughter that followed after confirmed Hiei was making the right decision in walking away.
***
Another mission later, Hiei was startled as Yusuke slumped next to him against a tree Hiei had chosen to settle down by.
"What are you doing?" Hiei asked, no bite to his tone yet, as he watched Yusuke with a cautious eye.
Yusuke pressed further into Hiei's side, and sighed dramatically, "That was a pain in the ass mission! That demon smelled like rotten eggs boiled in cabbage!"
"Before or after we killed him?" Kurama asked idly nearby. He was hanging out his shirt to dry.
Hiei didn't answer, but he also did not disagree.
Their opponent, a demon who fed on the anxieties of humans, had a terribly foul odor. It had distracted the newly formed team quite a bit during their fight, and Kuwabara had even thrown up on himself when the demon wrapped a slimy claw around his chest. To Kuwabara's admitted credit, that didn't stop him from slicing the demon's arm off with that thing he called a sword.
Someone needed to show that human how to properly wield his weapon, and not just throw it around.
"Before!" Yusuke whined dropping his head on Hiei's shoulder. "Even I ralphed when Kuwabara opened him up! The smell got ten times worse!"
This was also true. The putrid stench had even made Hiei's eyes water.
"At least it wasn't all over yourself," Hiei muttered, trying to pull away from Yusuke's insistent need to be close.
Hiei was strangely echoed by Kuwabara, who had appeared from the trees just to the left. There was a little river further down, and Kuwabara had been washing out his shirt, and Yusuke's jacket. Kuwabara and Hiei met eyes, a little startled that they had spoken the same thing, and then quickly looked away from one another.
"Here Kuwabara, I'll ring those out and hang them with my shirt," Kurama offered, holding his hands out. He had also washed a few of his belongings in the river, and was now hanging them to dry on a vine he had stretched from one tree to the next.
"Thanks, Kurama," Kuwabara mumbled, offering out the shirts as he came forward.
Yusuke was growing heavy on Hiei's shoulder, and Hiei closed his eyes taking in a slow breath. His patience lost for any more of this... "quality time," Hiei rose abruptly, knocking Yusuke to the ground.
"Ow! Ah, come on Hiei, just relax here!" Yusuke whined, a smile in his words.
Hiei ignored him and went to find some solitude away from the group.
***
"He'll be okay... right?" Kuwabara asked Hiei in a soft voice as Hiei tended to Kurama's back.
Kuwabara was laid out on the rest of the team's shirts and jackets, giving the fox as little comfort as they could from the hard ground. Kurama was unconscious, his back sliced open and bleeding. Hiei was tending to the wounds with practiced hands, and using a balm he knew how to create for situations like these.
Hiei glanced up at Kuwabara, studying the human's concerned frown. With a snort, Hiei answered, "He's taken much worse than this."
"Yeah, Hiei stabbed him in the gut once!" Yusuke piped up from his place at the fire where he was boiling some water.
Kuwabara's eyes went wide and snapped over to Yusuke, and then returned to Hiei with a confused, startled gaze.
Hiei rolled his eyes, "I was trying to stab Yusuke, Kurama just decided to take the hit."
"This was back when Hiei was being a shit! That mission I told you about with the orb, and mirror... and shit like that!" Yusuke added, shrugging his shoulders casually.
"Huh..." Kuwabara grunted after a while. He smiled at Hiei then, and laughed, "I forgot you were a bad guy before."
Hiei looked at Kuwabara, trying to glare and not just come across as confused. The answering smile told Hiei he had failed.
"Go away," Hiei muttered darkly, returning to his work. "After a night's rest with this salve, Kurama will be almost back to his old self."
"And we can take him to Genkai later! Don't worry so much Kuwabara!" Yusuke shouted again, standing up to remove his shirt so he could pull the boiling pot of water from the fire.
Kuwabara nodded, keeping his eyes on Kurama. Slapping his hands on his knees he sighed, and then suddenly reached out for Hiei's shoulder. He squeezed the shorter demon's shoulder, his thumb stroking Hiei twice, and then Kuwabara hefted himself up and walked to join Yusuke.
Hiei, still bristling from the unexpected contact, stared after Kuwabara, wondering what had the human reaching out for him like that. When Hiei couldn't find an answer, he went back to looking at the scrapes all along Kurama's back. These people were strange.
***
"He did good today," Kurama said, voice soft and eyes tired.
Hiei glanced over at Kuwabara, who was collapsed on his back, dead asleep after a vigorous day of training.
Hiei grunted, "He can almost see me at my top speeds." It was a fact, and not a compliment.
"His power is interesting, don't you think?" Kurama asked sitting next to Hiei, his shoulder pressed to the shorter demon's arm.
Hiei did not pull away. He frowned thinking over Kurama's question, before he asked, "What is interesting about it? He has some power, a weak and pitiful amount, but he has a little bit of ability. What's so fascinating about it to you Kurama?"
Kurama chuckled and lifted both shoulders, "Oh... it's... not violent. There's no... aggressive undertones to it."
"Ah, that..." Hiei muttered.
He had felt it too. A strange kind pulse resided in Kuwabara's power. It was not something uncommon among humans, Hiei had noticed, especially those of the monk persuasion. Kuwabara was no monk, but his spiritual awareness would have allowed him to go down that path if he ever chose to.
"He would be better as a healer or an exorcist," Hiei admitted, and then deciding to continue added, "I'm surprised his weapon isn't a shield."
"Why do you say that?" Kurama asked, tone clearly delighted in Hiei's willingness to have a conversation.
"A shield protects. It's what his power wants to do," Hiei answered simply.
Kurama hummed, "Swords can protect too..."
Hiei sighed and lifted his shoulders in a shrug. Hiei didn't use his sword to protect, or at least he didn't use to. Hiei glanced at the hilt of his sword and wondered privately if that had changed now.
"Well, he'll have to get a lot better if he's going to protect anyone with it," Hiei muttered, a growl in the undertones of his voice, "He can hardly protect himself!"
"Which is why we're training him. He'll come out of this tournament alive," Kurama said with a grin, "Don't you worry."
Hiei's face twisted with disgust and he glared at Kurama, "I am not worried!"
Kurama laughed, pressing his shoulder harder into Hiei. Hiei pressed back.
"Of course," Kurama sighed softly, "Of course."
Hiei snorted, disgusted by Kurama's misunderstanding. He was not worried about a human. But if he was going to fight at his side, that human better be able to take care of himself. His thoughts drifted over to Yusuke, somewhere training on his own. Frowning, Hiei muttered, "Yusuke better be getting stronger as well."
"Oh, now worrying about him is silly Hiei!" Kurama teased immediately, a smile stretching across his face, "Yusuke is very strong."
Hiei got up, intentionally pushing Kurama over who laughed.
"I am not worried!" Hiei snapped, before storming away to seek some time to himself.
***
Hiei watched Yusuke as he slept.
The tournament was over, Toguro was defeated. They could go home, but Hiei sensed things would be different from now on.
His arm throbbed, and Hiei glanced at it.
Yes, things would be very different.
Hiei's eyes shifted back to Yusuke, the detective frowning in his sleep. There were red splotches under his eyes, and his lashes had leftover tears. Yusuke had started to cry in his sleep, ever since Genkai's passing. Hiei had thought it might stop now that everything was all over, but he was mistaken. He would not judge Yusuke for his pain.
He shifted his eyes over towards Kurama who was feigning sleep. He could tell by his rigid shoulders that Kurama was lying awake, perhaps going over his battle with Karasu. Karasu had poked at the wounds of Kurama's heart, and dug out the cruelty Kurama had tried to lose now that he was not a Youko. Hiei did not understand what feelings were disturbing his companion in the corner of his mind, but Hiei would keep an eye on him.
It was all he knew how to do.
Shifting his gaze to look at Kuwabara, Hiei was startled to see the human was sitting up.
Hiei froze, keeping still in his place by the window, and watched as Kuwabara pushed back his covers and shuffled over towards the bathroom. He flicked on the light, closing his eyes at the harsh white light, but Hiei could see what had woken Kuwabara. His bandages were bloody.
Hiei was amazed Kuwabara had survived such an attack. Even if Toguro had been intending for a nonlethal stab, the wound had been very grievous. Kuwabara's spiritual powers had kicked in and closed the wound largely on its own, Kurama contributing to the rest. Still, it was remarkable that Kuwabara was alive, let alone able to walk around easily with that wound.
Kuwabara's hand rubbed his chest.
Well, maybe Kuwabara wasn't walking around easily, but was good at faking it.
Kuwabara changed his bandages with quick and practiced care, and then shuffled back out into the main room. Instead of returning to his bed, Kuwabara shuffled over to Kurama, checking on him. Kuwabara plucked at the loose comforter, and tucked it around the man's shoulders with a slow tender care. Hiei could see Kurama's body language relax, and he wondered if Kuwabara could tell Kurama was awake too.
He then shuffled to Yusuke and stared in silence for a period of time. Even if the room wasn't dark, Hiei wasn't sure he would understand the expression on Kuwabara's face. Eventually, Kuwabara raked fingers through his mussed hair, and then reached down to fluff one of Yusuke's pillows, and tuck the smaller man into bed. Gently his hands were on Yusuke's shoulders, and Hiei could feel Kuwabara sending a soothing energy into Yusuke, a skill he did on instinct alone.
Yusuke sighed in his sleep, the pain in his face smoothing away, and shifted into the comfort of his bed.
Kuwabara then turned towards him.
Hiei snapped his eyes closed, fighting to keep his body from going rigid.
He could sense Kuwabara standing over him after a moment, and there Kuwabara stood for a long time. He was attempted to open his eyes and ask him to go away, but remained quiet, curious what Kuwabara would do.
There was a shuffling sound and then a blanket was being tucked gently around him.
He opened his eyes staring at the top of Kuwabara's head, the human's face lowered as he concentrated on his task. Kuwabara's hands were being very cautious of his arm, and Hiei could sense Kuwabara's nervousness pooling off of him. Kuwabara's hand settled on the wrist of Hiei's good arm, and Hiei felt a small sleeping wave of comforting energy.
Hiei closed his eyes, and let Kuwabara slink away without getting "caught."
He listened as Kuwabara resettled into bed, and vaguely remembered a conversation he and Kurama had shared some time ago.
Kuwabara would be better suited as a healer.
***
Sensui was dead and gone, and Yusuke was a demon apparently.
Hiei couldn't deny how much sense that made.
In fact, it was really laughable that he had never noticed before.
Currently, Kuwabara, Yusuke, and Kurama were all piled against each other, all dirty and half asleep. With the way Kuwabara's mouth was hanging open, Hiei suspected Kuwabara was fully asleep.
Hiei privately thought he probably deserved the rest. There was no way Kuwabara would have been able to relax around his captors.
Hiei had just pulled himself from that pile, irritated that he had been dragged into it, to begin with.
He looked at the people he had been working alongside for the better part of a year, and glared at them as he tried to label them something other than what his heart was whispering.
It was no use.
They were... his friends now he guessed, a word that was as uncommon as peace. But that's what they were, and that was what they brought him. Peace.
It was all so strange.
"Hey..." Yusuke grunted, popping open an eye, "Don't move around so much... you're exhausted."
"You're exhausted," Hiei returned petulantly, receiving a cheeky grin in return.
Yusuke held out an arm, and lazily waved Hiei over, "Hey. Come on. Just... settle down with us."
Hiei made a face, but stepped closer.
Yusuke grinned, shaking his head with a sigh, "No one is looking, and also who gives a fuck. Just come join us and exist for a bit."
"I don't..." Hiei tried to say, but the words were dead before he could voice them. He... was not opposed to settling down against his teammates, enjoying the feel of their closeness, and relishing in the fact they had all survived. Somehow.
He could allow himself this, just once, right?
"Don't think. Just... fall," Yusuke said with a sigh and a careless shrug.
Hiei cringed, but reluctantly tipped forward, and let Yusuke catch his wrist. He was tugged down, and pulled hard into Kuwabara, who groaned as he was jolted into alertness.
"Jesus! Watch it Urameshi!" Kuwabara snapped, shoving Yusuke, while seeming unbothered that it was Hiei who had been thrown into his side.
Instead, Kuwabara settled himself more, giving Hiei room to be pressed against his side. Yusuke pressed into Hiei's opposite side, and from around Kuwabara, Kurama's hand reached out and squeezed Hiei's forearm.
"Shut up Kuwabara," Yusuke said, voice soft and teasing.
Hiei's lids were heavy, and he settled against the group quietly.
How strange it was to have affection for these three strangers he'd been forced to endure.

part thirty-three to this
The flatlands on the edge of Mukuro’s territory are ideally suited for Kuwabara’s scheme.
“Hardly anyone lives there,” she says, “and the open fields mean we’ll see B’valan approach from any direction. Unless he chooses to come from directly beneath us, of course.”
In which case, they have Hatori. “I have something of a finely tuned sense for things that would like to devour me,” he assures the room.
The plan needs only two people to put themselves in harm’s way.
“Three,” Mukuro corrects Kuwabara. She puts a finger in front of his lips when he tries to speak. “I would help you even without our mutual friend pleading for my assistance. How often is one granted an opportunity to see the end of a myth play out?” Not very, Kuwabara reckons.  “At any rate, you are way more likely to die than I am.”
He shuts the fuck up, after that.
Yusuke and Kurama also have some concerns regarding his arithmetic.
“I think you’ve miscalculated, Kuwabara,” Kurama says pleasantly. “Your plan is missing two people.”
“Us, you asshole!”
In hindsight, Kuwabara should have expected this--both his friends insisting they risk their lives alongside his and the half-nelson Yusuke grapples him with.
“Five. Five people!” Which is more than three, and still more than two, but it’s certainly not the dozens upon dozens of people present. “How did we end up with every competitor in the Demon World Tournament and half the spectators showing up?”
He and Hatori stand alone in the center of the flatlands while folks sprawl along the edge of a wide circle.
Jin charms Keiko with a boisterous tale--told at Yusuke’s expense, judging by the way he stalks across the field to tell Keiko his version of events. Chu’s howling laughter can be heard a mile away.
“A chapter in Makai’s history will soon draw to a close,” Hatori says. “Everyone feels it. They wish to be a part of it.”
Many of the merchants from the market B’valan wrecked have come. They pass out food and drink generously without asking for payment. Kuwabara can make out a few kids, too, scouting the horizon for a glimpse of the fabled creature.
He doesn’t sense an impending bloodbath in the air. It feels...right for people to be here, to share in this moment.
Gonda hops around the parameter keeping an eye out for B’valan. Kuwabara wonders if all that jumping is good for his concussion. Enki and Yomi, too, have been released from the infirmary. Enki seems as friendly as Yusuke describes him. He waves at Hatori and Kuwabara when they catch his eye, bearing no ill will towards the former for beating him soundly and robbing him of a second term as king of Makai. Yomi’s ears, however, twitch in his direction ever so spitefully whenever Hatori speaks.
The possibility of Yomi hating him forever delights Hatori.
“It’s been too long since I have had a nemesis,” he confides.
Kuwabara has never had much luck with nemeses. His rivalries with Yusuke and Hiei were both one sided and also just dumb crushes on his part. “You’re not Yomi’s nemesis. He’s just mad you made his son cry.” Shura stands at Yomi’s side, fussing over his father’s injuries at the slightest hint of any discomfort. “Also, B’valan is gonna show up at any moment. How’s he supposed to feel when you’re content to replace him with anybody?”
There’s the ear twitch of indignation. It’s for Kuwabara this time, and so is Shura’s stink eye.
Speaking of B’valan. “What do you think is going to happen when the armor comes off? Is he still going to be a worm monster, but like, a naked worm monster?”
“Thank you for sharing that particular vision.”
Any time. “Seriously, though!” He might be easier to fight, but it will be a lot fucking grosser.
“Removing the armor will end his contract with the Waste King. I don’t know what that means for B’valan.”
He could turn into an old man or a pile of dust. Or he could go back to being the same as he was the day he put the armor on, completely unaged.
“Did you ever meet him before your lady sent you on a mission to kill him?”
“Once, though I knew of him for quite some time. I grew up in My Lady’s cult--what is it?”
It’s sort of an awkward thing to explain. “The word ‘cult’ has a certain connotation where I'm from. It, uh...never mind. You were saying?”
“B’valan was My Lady’s champion. His place in the cult was to protect her worshipers and follow her tenets. When my village was struck by a blood sickness, he personally brought us medicine. Healers often chose to study at My Lady’s temples, you see. He was...friendly. I remember him playing with some of the children before he took his leave.” Hatori traces the medallion at his waist. “I suppose he considered such duties beneath him.”
“Maybe he’s learned a lesson since then.” Hatori glances at Kuwabara curiously. “I had this uh, connection with B’valan? He sent me a message in my dreams. He sounded...exhausted. He doesn’t want to be alone anymore.” Who would, after so long? “The loneliness just barely edges out his jealousy for you.”
“He is jealous of me?”
Extremely. “He called you the ‘false hand.’”
“Ah, for my position.” Hatori has a place at the Violet Queen’s side; B’valan does not. “He has only himself to blame. I would have died a little known farmer had he not broken his vows.”
The thought brings a pang to Kuwabara’s chest. A lot of strange, unlikely events have brought himself and Hatori together, but that’s true of most of the important relationships in Kuwabara’s life.
A cloud brings momentary relief from the sun.
“I’ve never considered B’valan my enemy,” Hatori says. “I pity him too much. If I had known it was within my power to spare him his torment, I would have done so long ago.”
Because he’s an honorable man. “Will she want to see him?”
“Perhaps. I know your friend will. B’valan has troubled you both extensively.”
There’s no reason mentioning Hiei should make Hatori smirk like that. “He’ll get his chance.” Kuwabara won’t close the portal unless the plan backfires and B’valan tries to attack the Violet Queen.
Hatori murmurs something in Demon.
“What?”
“It’s an idiom popular among My Lady’s people. I don’t know if it is still commonly used. It means ‘the web will bear the weight.’ We say it to encourage others, to have courage when they fear there is none. Kuwabara.” Hatori squeezes the back of his neck. “The web will bear the weight.”
The web might, but what about his heart?

Folding Clothes
While chores aren’t the most exciting thing in the world, they do have a perk to them — one Yuusuke is happy to teach his son.
Chapter 1 of the Doin’ the Human Thing fic and part of the Guns and Roses series on Ao3. For more updates of this specific fic, follow the doin the human thing tag.
Yuusuke had come to terms with the idea of chores being a necessity in everyday life. While it wasn’t the most exciting thing and he would’ve hardly liked to take out the trash, clean dishes, or sweep the floors — having a clean house took work. Especially when it was a house full of people who needed a bit of cleanliness to wreak their usual havoc. Chores weren’t exciting. However, doing them with his family did provide a certain appeal.
Kurama was often the go-to option if Yuusuke needed something done, and work divided between them was done in no time flat, albeit with no small amount of teasing and a few stolen kisses here and there. It was certainly hard to complain about washing dishes with Kurama hugging him from behind, the solid warmth of his body pressed to Yuusuke’s back and soft lips at his ear whispering wicked things.
Deft fingers toying at the waistband of his sweatpants, quickly moving to safer territory when tiny footsteps accompanied by even tinier voices interrupted the moment. Never failing to make Yuusuke laugh when Kurama shifted from tempting lover to doting father, addressing the small duo who pulled him away for their own needs or the simple want of playing with him.
Normally, Yuusuke would’ve been amenable to Kurama’s helpless glances but the dishes did need to be done. In fact, he might have taken a little longe with them. Allowing the sounds of his children’s squabbling with their father to lull him deeper into his thoughts until the rumbling of the dryer stopped with a loud beep. Drying off his hands, Yuusuke threw the dish towel over his shoulder and started off toward the laundry room. Piling all of the warm clothes into a basket and hefting it in his arms easily, the weight nothing compared to most of the heavy lifting he had to do over the years.
Compared to handling territory disputes and sitting on a makeshift throne while Yomi and Mukuro bickered at one another, Yuusuke would’ve taken folding clothes anyway. Especially if it granted him a view like this. In the short time he’d been gone, Kurama managed to wrangle their two kids into some semblance of order.
The tinny 8-bit music coming from the television’s speakers occupying their son, Asahi, as he swayed from side to side, attempting to beat the most recent level of his game. Yuusuke spied Kurama glancing up from his laptop once or twice, glancing toward the screen, his eyebrow raising when Asahi made a questionable move and lips curling up at the corner when Asahi passed another obstacle.
Kurama’s relationship with video games had been a little rocky ever since their battle with Sensui and while he did enjoy them, it wasn’t until Asahi expressed his interest that he’d truly thrown himself back into the love of them. Time was needed and a few child-friendly explanations on why his father’s breath hitched whenever Asahi reached a “Game Over”, or why he needed a break when Asahi asked him to let him win. But things were getting a little better steadily — it wasn’t fun — but some things in life weren’t.
A little tug at his pants leg turned Yuusuke’s attention downward to a little girl who was no taller than his knee. Her dark hair falling in her eyes as she rubbed at them, tiny sniffles coming with a sleepy whine. Yuusuke setting down the basket to swing her up in his arms, tucking his hands beneath her as she curled closer to his shoulder with a content sigh.
“Tired, Tsubaki?”
“Mm…”
Yuusuke caught a glimpse of golden eyes slipping shut before her small faces pressed to the side of his neck. Gentle snores and even breathing coming after a few pats to the back and a soft hum, the basket lifted up beneath his opposite arm and carried to the couch.
“Do you want me to take her, Yuusuke?” Kurama asked, his voice a touch softer as he reminded Asahi to turn the television’s volume a little lower as to not disturb his sister. With no complaint, the tinny music was barely audible.
Yuusuke hiked Tsubaki up on his hip, ensuring she was still asleep before he turned around to look at Kurama. “Nah, I got her. ‘Sides, how’s work co—“
A rustle of fabric and the basket creaking drew his ear and Yuusuke’s brows furrowed, his gaze dropping to the head of red hair peeking from beneath one of Kurama’s white dress shirts. After moving it aside and squinting, eyes as brown as his own opened, gazing up at him questioningly. To Yuusuke, it was a little cute how much Asahi resembled Kurama. Like his father, Asahi possessed the same mane of red hair, long and filled with demonic energy in every strand which meant it was impossible to cut and wouldn’t stay short for long. It grew at an impressive length and his bangs often covered wide rounded brown eyes. Yuusuke might have been a little biased but he felt blessed with having two beautiful kids, although Asahi’s cuteness was just as weaponized as Kurama’s was.
Asahi smiling up at Yuusuke despite clearly being burrowed in a basket of clean clothes and Yuusuke was hard-pressed not to smile back. Hearing the muffled chuckle from Kurama only earned him a sideways glance.
“… What’re you doing?” Yuusuke asked gently, amusement lilting at his voice betraying him.
Asahi poked one foot in the air and wiggled his toes, seeming to tuck himself deeper beneath another one of Kurama’s dress shirts and Yuusuke’s jacket. “It’s warm in here, daddy.”
Yuusuke couldn’t help laughing. Soft though it was, Asahi didn’t take well to being laughed at when he didn’t know the joke. His nose wrinkling cutely. “I get that, kiddo. I just took these out of the dryer, but I mean what’re you doing in there.”
Asahi squints at him as if he asked the easiest question in the world, and the look is so blatantly him that Yuusuke snorts.
“Being warm?”
Arguing with four-year-old logic seemed a little futile and he did look cozy, but Yuusuke knew that the clothes would lose their warmth eventually, and not fast enough for him to coax Asahi out of them. Tsubaki shifted in his hold, pressing her face against the side of Yuusuke’s neck earnestly, a little brush of something against his arm reminding him of her tail. Her ears following shortly after, twitching and tickling his cheek. Small snores reminding him that she was fast asleep and he sighed.
Like a beacon of hope, Kurama came to the rescue.
“Asahi, those were just cleaned.”
His tone ever patient and gentle when regarding their children, although Yuusuke could practically hear the smile in his voice, the older redhead far too amused with his son’s antics.
Yuusuke could hardly blame him though. He was entertained daily with the mischief that his children got up to and while Asahi shared a greater deal of his looks with Kurama, his creativity was surely derived from Yuusuke. His imagination was vast and wild. Often times, Tsubaki was his partner in crime but whereas she shared Yuusuke’s looks, she had more of Kurama’s disposition down to his humor and wit.
It made them a devastating duo but also the best of friends. Yuusuke was an only child but his friends — namely, Kuwabara — gave him some sense of what it would be like to have a sibling. All of them had become a family to him of sorts and while Kurama was also an only child, they agreed that having more than one child would be nice. And seeing the pair that they had, Yuusuke still felt the same, even when his son dove into a pile of clean clothes just to be warm.
Turning his attention back to Asahi, Yuusuke chuckled seeing the younger redhead staring at the older.
“But I am clean, dad,” Asahi argued and Kurama quirked a brow, leaning against the arm of his chair.
“Yes, but not ‘out of the dryer’ clean.”
Before they could delve into a verbal sparring match, Yuusuke intervened. Laying Tsubaki down on one end of the couch, he freed his hands to lift Asahi out of the basket, not minding his pouting and squirming. Swooping him in close, Yuusuke nudged his nose against Asahi’s own. The pouting ceasing almost immediately and a sunny smile wormed its way past his surly expression, soft giggling as Yuusuke peppered his cheek with kisses before plopping him in Kurama’s lap.
Vendetta between older and younger immediately forgotten as Kurama wrapped his arms around Asahi, practically dwarfing him with his larger frame. Asahi didn’t seem to mind, always happy to cuddle to one of his fathers, and happier when he had a wider view of the world.
His smile impossibly bright, legs wiggling a bit with socked feet narrowly reaching the screen of Kurama’s laptop until Yuusuke eased it out of the way. Sharing a look with Kurama and giving him a kiss upon his head as Asahi finally made himself comfortable.
“… Okay daddy, I don’t wanna lay in there anymore,” Asahi kindly informed Yuusuke, the former detective shaking his head.
“Good to know.”
Pulling down a blanket from the back of the couch, Yuusuke tucked it around Tsubaki, carefully scratching behind her ear and listening to the soft mumbling as she curled into a ball. Her tail tucked close to her and ears pressing back against her head, tiny nails sharpened to claws and twitching. She might have been dreaming about running through Makai again. Yuusuke making a mental note to have another camping trip with the kids on the weekend. Kurama wouldn’t have to work and he could ask Keiko to take over the shop for a little.
He’d have to bribe her with a little something from Makai but it was worth it. And it wasn’t as if he wouldn’t have gotten her anything anyway.
Setting to the task of folding clothes, Yuusuke was acutely aware of the conversation going on behind him.
“Dad…?” Asahi asked in the soft curious tone he used when he was on the verge of asking for something.
Kurama didn’t respond for a second but the clicking of his keyboard slowed. “Yes, little one?”
“Can you move over there?”
Yuusuke arched a brow, glancing over his shoulder long enough to see where Asahi was pointing. Kurama looked as well and smiled, nodding to Asahi’s request.
“Of course.”
Asahi brightened up immediately, hopping down from Kurama’s lap and waiting until he moved to the other side of the living room, sitting down in front of the television with his laptop in hand. It took a moment for him to settle and he leant back against the low table, but Asahi waited patiently, picking up the controller left upside down by the console. After Kurama settled, Asahi leapt into his lap and made himself comfortable, cuddling close to him and picking up his controller. Unabashedly resuming his game as Kurama fiddled with a new set-up for his laptop while allowing his son to sit in his lap.
Yuusuke snorted, pairing together some of Asahi’s socks as he asked teasingly. “Did you really just ask your dad to move so you could sit comfortable?”
Looking over his shoulder amusedly, he saw Asahi peek from around Kurama’s arm with a sheepish smile.
“… Maybe?”
Yuusuke sighed. Well, there was no harm in it. Kurama seemed comfortable where he was and settled into his work just as easily as he did in his own chair. Asahi returning to his game and the quiet evening rolling on until Tsubaki started to make small noises in her sleep. Upset whimpering and sniffling, a signal that she was going to cry before she woke.
“Ah, hell…” Yuusuke cursed under his breath, dropping the t-shirt in hand.
From behind, Asahi called. “Language, daddy,” at the same time that Kurama muttered absentmindedly, “Language, Yuusuke.”
Yuusuke rolled his eyes. Like father, like son. Reaching down to ease the blanket from her tiny fists, Yuusuke tucked his arms around Tsubaki and cradled her close to his chest. Grateful that he wasn’t wearing a shirt as his youki wrapped around her. Skin-to-skin contact, as Shiori put it, worked wonders.
Gradually, her whimpering and warning cries eased into soft grunts and sniffling. Her eyes slowly opening and peering around the room. Golden and glistening with unshed tears, she peered up at Yuusuke and his heart melted. It was hard to hear her crying although he knew at times it was for no reason, he’d do anything to make her feel better. Pressing a few kisses to her crown and muttering softly against her skin.
“There we go. See? It’s just me…”
Tsubaki folded into him, clinging to the longer strands of hair brushing against the back of his neck. A wince barely visible when she tugged a little harder than he liked. He’d have to ask Shizuru to cut it for him again. Nudging the basket to one side, Yuusuke sat at one end of the couch and tucked Tsubaki against him.
“Just me, kiddo.. It’s just me.”
“Why’s Tsu crying?”
Yuusuke glanced up in time to see Asahi’s concerned look, the 8-bit music completely ignored as his character plummeted into the abyss. Most kids would’ve been a little miffed at losing a game but Asahi’s attention wasn’t most kids and his attention was solely on his sister when she was in distress. It was one of the things Yuusuke loved most about him. Asahi took to being an older brother like a fish in water, and helped out tremendously. It was a little jarring at times how one of them would try to complete a task only to find it done, albeit at times sloppily, but practice made perfect and Asahi gave it his all where Tsubaki was concerned.
“She’s still little,” Yuusuke explained. “She gets a bit fussy when she wakes up and isn’ sure what’s going on.” Seeing his confused expression, Yuusuke decided to try a different approach. “When you’re really small, all you wanna do is be warm, safe, fed, and loved.”
That seemed to do the trick. Realization forming as Asahi’s mouth formed an almost perfect circle, his head bobbing. “So… when you get older, y’don’t wanna do that anymore?”
Yuusuke shook his head. “Mm… when you’re older, you start wanting to do more stuff. Like me. Doing chores, looking after your sister, talking to you. Doing stuff like that makes me happy.”
Asahi seems skeptical at that, squinting at him. “… You’re happy doing chores?”
Ah, maybe his kids picked up on the lost love between him and chores after all. “Well, not really. But I’m happy giving your dad a break, and lettin’ you run around and your sister sleep.” He chanced a glance down at Tsubaki, hearing her sniffling subside and her soft sighs as he rocked her back and forth. “That stuff makes me happy, so I do chores.”
“Oh…”
Yuusuke figured the conversation would end with that until he heard soft footsteps and a small quiet voice ask, “Can I help?”
He arched a brow, seeing Asahi pointing at the basket and staring spat him. While he had no doubt that Asahi would fold some of them wrong, it was an easy mistake to rectify. Though it did surprise him. When he was a kid, he didn’t take to doing chores very well, but he was also rebellious in many ways. Part of him thought his kids would pick up the same mannerisms but he’d been surprised thus far.
“Yeah,” Yuusuke said, giving him a smile. “Thanks.”
Tsubaki steadily roused from sleep and once she was entirely awake, she insisted on helping as well. Yuusuke never thought that showing his kids how to fold a shirt would be fun but it was hilarious seeing them do it and attempt to copy him. A wave of affectionate youki pressing against his back while he laughed at Asahi’s attempt to be a ghost beneath a sheet, Tsubaki’s shrieks of laughter bringing a smile to Yuusuke’s face while Asahi chased her around the living room.
Feeling the wave wash over him with familiar warmth, Yuusuke glanced toward Kurama who smiled at him. A look of fondness in his eyes that was returned almost immediately. Damn, he really was getting soft.
Eventually, the kids wound down and the laundry was neatly folded and placed in the basket to be tucked away in the correct drawers later. Asahi climbing up on the couch and nestling close to Yuusuke’s side while Tsubaki curled up on his chest, both succumbing to an afternoon sleep spell. Tucking a blanket over the pair, Yuusuke hugged them close to him and settled down with his back pressed to the couch cushions. His eyes slowly slipping shut down and again until he felt a weight beside him, a deep voice speaking close to his ear.
“You are very good with them, Yuusuke.”
Opening one eye to glimpse Kurama smiling happily, Yuusuke sighed in return and shifted to allow Kurama to take most of his weight. “You really think so?”
He doubted Kurama would say it without meaning it but it meant a lot to hear his answering hum. Strong arms fitting around Yuusuke’s own, careful fingers gliding over Tsubaki’s cheek and the tips of her ears, the pair twitching as Kurama pulled his hand away. Asahi cuddled closer to Yuusuke’s side, sighing softly when Kurama combed his fingers through his hair.
“Did you ever imagine being a father?” Kurama asked after a moment, his hand resting on Yuusuke’s upper arm, rubbing small soothing circles.
Yuusuke snorted harshly. “Hell no. I barely imagined making it past fourteen. Didn’ even have a dad… seeing them, makes me wonder how the hell someone can just… leave it all behind.”
“I can’t fathom it either.”
Kurama’s hand squeezed his upper arm, a warm strong hand that could be just as gentle and nurturing as it could be forceful, tenderly coming to rest against Yuusuke’s shoulder. Kurama’s chin resting against his shoulder. Yuusuke sighed. He knew that things in Makai weren’t as picturesque. Kurama was one of the lucky ones, with a mother that loved him to pieces and an unbelievable father-figure. But others of his kind were seldom abandoned, as was tradition. Grow strong or die. And Yuusuke balked when Kurama mentioned it, though seeing the indignation at his kind’s tradition and ferocity in which Kurama threw himself into being a father — Yuusuke knew he wasn’t in this alone.
“They’re tiny people with big emotions,” Yuusuke muttered offhandedly, finding the filter between his head and his mouth loosening more than usual. “Half the time, adults were always telling me to shut up and sit down when I just wanted to know. Asahi’s every bit of curious as I was and I’d tear someone apart if they treated him like people did me.”
There was always that balancing act. Not wanting to repeat what was done to him but also not wanting to do his kids a disservice. Even if he didn’t have a father of his own, Yuusuke had plenty of father-figures, some less perfect than others, but he’d do the damn best he could for his own.
“As would I,” Kurama said and Yuusuke snorted.
“Oh I know you would, Mister Threaten-A-Plant.”
Kurama gave a one-shoulder shrug, grinning playfully as he nuzzled against Yuusuke’s cheek. A habit that Yuusuke had gotten very used to over the years. “I protect my kits,” Kurama muttered, brushing his lips against his skin.
“Yeah? Well, your kits aren’t slouches. Asahi nearly knocked someone’s head in when they almost made Tsubaki cry.”
Kurama chuckled, pride in his laugh and the glint of gold in his eyes as he regarded their son. “He’s quite protective over his sister.”
“Almost puts Hiei to shame.”
Their conversation lulled into silence and Yuusuke noticed Kurama’s hair slipping over his shoulder as he relaxed. His breathing evening out and one of his hands resting upon Tsubaki’s back where Asahi’s had also fallen. One hand, larger and calloused. The other, smaller and still growing. Yuusuke wasn’t sure what kind of person his son would grow up to be but with Kurama by his side, he was more than optimistic about finding out.
“… You sleepy too?” Yuusuke asked after a short while.
Kurama quietly mumbling. “Comfortable..”
“Right, right, my bad…” Yuusuke chuckled, pressing a kiss to his cheek. Kurama was always cuddly when he was tired.
Slowly, Kurama opened his eyes and green met brown, his smile warm. “.. Thank you for taking care of the laundry.”
Yuusuke’s heart fluttered, his lips meeting Kurama’s in a chaste kiss before he leant against him. “Anytime.”

The making of Anomaly, chapter 3
Link to chapter 3
I’ll openly admit that, at this point, I had no idea what I was doing, but I was in a YYH mood and Makoto seemed to have piqued people’s interest, so I thought I might as well keep going.
The chapter opens with Makoto and Yuusuke trying not to die as they run laps around the lake. That’s Amemasu’s home, so when she sinks her head in the lake, there’s a good chance they saw her for the first time in many years.
I didn’t know yet what lived in the lake, and neither did Makoto, but Amemasu had been aware of Mako as early as Nana first brought her to the temple and was shown around the lake. At this point in the story, she hasn’t been in the forest in a long time, so Amemasu probably had a very confusing moment as to who this young Nana lookalike with youki was.
"There is something odd about his aura. I cannot pinpoint it, but it's there."
"As I understand, he died and came back to life."
This is Makoto actually sensing Yuusuke’s weird wavelength that almost got him stuck in the afterlife. Genkai offers a passable explanation, but what Makoto’s picking up isn’t due to his resurrection, it’s the budding demon genes that are still obscured by Yuusuke’s very human… everything.
He wasn't supposed to be there. That's why Kurama's death had been so clear to her, it had to be. Her prediction hadn't accounted for this guy because he just wasn't supposed to be there, wrecking everything he came in contact with. He was tearing down the very paths of fate.
Plucked from the river of life and thrown back in without a care, the ripples he caused were affecting the people he crossed paths with.
The mother of all anomalies. The source of her headaches for over a week. It had been his fault all along.
I cannot stress enough that this wasn’t planned and I was just following Makoto’s thoughts to their logical conclusion. Luckily for me, Makoto turned out to be a very reflexive character, and I think a lot of Anomaly’s charm is due to this: we as fans know the story in a way that is hard to be surprised anymore, but re-experiencing these events through the eyes of someone with inside knowledge of how things work in-universe and no idea of how events will play out opens up many avenues for analysis. She notices things that our familiarity or ingrained first impressions make us overlook. At least, that’s how it worked for me.
And Anomaly could very well have ended here, with its main mystery resolved, but I was having way too much fun to let go yet.
I didn’t expect Mako and Yuusuke to get along so well. I honestly thought she’d just write him off as dumb and loud and he’d think she was off-putting and had a stick up her ass. I didn’t realize until I had them alone in the same room that Yuusuke and Fumiko are not so different, and Mako was used to dealing with her more than with anybody else. I think she finds some comfort in people who are so radically different to her, who’s always gone through life restraining herself. And after his trip through the afterlife, Yuusuke is not the judgmental type, so when he brings up her oddities, he does so in the same straightforward way Fumi does, with no ill intent. She knows how rare that is and appreciates it.
The other thing that I cannot stress enough is that Kurama is a nightmare to write. Their little back and forth after school was torture to write because I can never figure out what is going through his head. Rereading this with some perspective, I’d say that he found her funny and he was very curious about Makoto’s power. He’s taken a liking to her, of course, since she was worried about him and his mother back at the hospital, but at this point she’s a bit of a sociological experiment to him. Though, to be fair, all the connections Kurama forms along YYH have that feel. Human World relationships are a novelty he hasn’t experienced much.
"I'm sure you look fantastic when you exercise. Not a hair out of place, all prim and proper with your clothes neatly pressed."
I just want to point out that I share Makoto’s saltiness regarding this matter.
"Good morning, Makoto," he said amicably.
She refused to take her eyes off the road. "Are you a stalker?"
It’s fun to write people with little regards for social conventions.
At any rate, the entire conversation they have during the run was me trying to set the inner workings and limits of Mako’s ability for my own benefit as much as for the readers.
By the time Mako’s back to the temple, Yuusuke has surpassed her, maybe not in energy reserves, but 100% in technique. He’s a prodigy and she’s slow, she’s assumed that there are some things she simply cannot do, and this is why she won’t catch up to the others in terms of battling skill for the rest of the fic.
Mako’s habit of counting to three fit so well with it being a habit from training as a child, like a ballerina counting steps, that when I thought of it I was like, ‘Oh, so that’s why she does that!’
Genkai hummed and, after a few seconds, she said, "You should also know that you are always welcome here."
This small remark was, in the end, what decided Makoto’s fate at the end of the fic. I kept coming back to this sentence, thinking of how Genkai wanted the temple grounds to become a refuge for non-humans. She knew that Makoto was bound to feel out of place no matter where she went and wanted to help with that in her own way. It sort of worked, in the sense that it became Mako’s home down the line, but Makoto never felt it hers. She always felt like she was just the keeper of the grounds, waiting for the true master to come back, and she sticks to the philosophy of welcoming everyone, first to honor Genkai’s wishes, later on because she realizes that it is important for everybody to have a place like that. This is something I would love to explore in the sequel, if I ever get around to writing it.
As for her parents, they are just regular good people. They aren’t very interesting, nor were they meant to be. Mako’s home life is the model of what a nuclear family is supposed to be: happy suburban couple with a kid, a two story house, stable jobs, a nice car, and not a worry in life other than doing too much overtime. Makoto is weird enough for all of them, so her family didn’t need to be.

::: DO NOT REBLOG. Anyone who does will be hardblocked :::
[ While little attention is given to Mikoto’s feelings about the coup in canon, I headcanon her thoughts concerning it to be...complex.
     First, concerning the clan’s history:
It’s made clear that, since the founding of Konoha, the Uchiha have been - at times slightly, at times majorly - ostracized by other parts of the village. The lingering distrust between them and the Senju - who, for as long as Konoha has existed, have maintained major power while the Uchiha have had near to none - meant that any chance of things ever completely settling were nearly nonexistent. All Hokage have either been of Senju blood, or had Senju teachings. Hashirama, Tobirama, and Tsunade belong to the clan. Hiruzen was taught by Tobirama, Minato taught by Hiruzen’s student Jiraiya, Kakashi taught by Minato, and Naruto taught by Kakashi (and fathered by Minato). The bias is...extremely evident.
While Hashirama had every intention of bettering the relationship between the clans, his rather early demise shattered that dream...and it only got worse when Tobirama was named Nidaime. Lacking his brother’s idealism and optimism, he tried a more hands-off approach to the Uchiha: he made them the village’s police...while keeping both their district and their new station tucked away in the rear of the village: a physical reminder of how they were very much the ‘others’ when it came to the clans of Konoha. They were also barred from positions of power: they were disallowed from becoming ANBU, the most trusted and highly-skilled warriors of the Hokage seat. Nor were they allowed to hold positions within the council of elders.
This was all in spite of the fact that not a single Uchiha defected to follow Madara in his rebellion against Konoha and Hashirama, choosing instead to remain loyal to the village. Tobirama’s trust could still not be earned.
Hiruzen, also tied to the Senju line as a student of Tobirama’s, was not nearly as anti-Uchiha as his teacher was...but his nevertheless slight bias was still present. Things remained mostly unchanged for the Uchiha for much of his time as Hokage...until the Kyūbi incident. When Obito attacked the birthing team assisting Kushina in delivering Naruto and unleashed Kurama, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that an Uchiha had to have been involved. And while that was technically true, Obito acted of his own volition, and had no support or knowledge concerning his clan. They hadn’t even known he was still alive.
At the time, most KMPF officers - rather than confront the Kyūbi directly as the shinobi did - instead tasked themselves with the evacuation of the civilians, whom they were most responsible for as the village’s police. This left near to no shinobi witnesses outside the clan that could account for their whereabouts during the attack. Even as Mikoto’s sister Manami lost her leg protecting a family from the beast, and both Mikoto and her husband Fugaku assured Hiruzen that they had nothing to do with the attack, suspicion remained...and conditions for the Uchiha got worse.
Rights - slowly but surely - were squeezed and narrowed for them. A curfew was enacted for the entire clan, their communications outside the village were subject to search, and intelligence was kept from them. Talk began stirring within the Uchiha of a coup, and nearly the entire clan was for it from the beginning. Outliers included Manami - Mikoto’s older sister - and her son Shisui, as well as a few others (including Itachi, unspokenly)...but not nearly enough to halt the talks of rebellion.
Itachi, having shown great promise, was the clan’s first and only ANBU officer ever fully instated. (Canon says that Shisui, too, was ANBU...but he is never shown in their garb. And given Fugaku’s later suspicion of Itachi stemming from his position as ANBU, him asking Shisui of all people - as another ANBU officer - to keep an eye on him makes no sense. Therefore, this blog sees him reach tokubetsu jōnin rank only, not ANBU). This was done purposefully by Hiruzen as a means to offer an olive branch to the clan...but Fugaku immediately used it as a weapon, demanding his son become a double agent, which he agreed to...but in truth, he was a triple agent, working for the village over the clan.
Fugaku, up until that point, had been negotiating on and off with the village - more so in recent months - since the attack by Obito to try and stem the backlash from the village. But every offer and compromise he brought forward was shot down.
This was seen, at the time, as the continued prejudice against the Uchiha, and only served to stoke their fires of rebellion further the more time went on. In truth, nearly all of the extremism present in the proceedings from the attack onward came from Shimura Danzō, who - more than anyone, and at odds with Hiruzen - adopted Tobirama’s anti-Uchiha sentiments.
Those feelings were also coupled with greed over their eyes, having been making secret arrangements with Orochimaru to allow them to continue their research in return for any advancements deemed useful for the councilman, which would later revolve around Hashirama’s cells, and Uchiha eyes. His continued hardlining against the clan was in part due to his bias and belief they were a genuine threat...and a want to take their power for himself. By having the clan killed, he would both eliminate their threat, and receive their eyes for his own personal use. The massacre, from the beginning, was his idea, and his alone. The rest of the council - more partial to Tobirama as well, and therefore often siding with him over Hiruzen - were easily manipulated into following his lead, not knowing the true extent of his motives.
With all of this in mind, Mikoto’s feelings therefore mostly concerned three main factors: the overall well-being of her clan; the safety of her sons; and the circumstances surrounding her friend Kushina’s death.
For the clan, she knew that - given the unrelenting refusal from the village - if they were to have their freedom and their due respect, war was almost inevitable. If Konoha would not listen to reason and continue to treat them like second class citizens in a village they helped found, defend, and remained loyal to even when Madara himself turned his back...then they would resort to force.
On the other hand, she had seen the effect the last war had had on her eldest son. She herself knew the horrors of war. Subjecting Itachi and Sasuke to that was something that weighed heavily on her. As much as she wanted to fight back, she didn’t want their childhoods colored by civil war if they could in any way avoid it. ANBU or not, Itachi was still a child...and Sasuke was barely enrolled in the Academy. Though she gave Fugaku her support, she also begged that he keep trying to salvage the talks for as long as possible...if only for the sake of her boys.
But what had the most weight leaning her into war - a deeply personal feeling of betrayal and anger toward Konoha - came not by blood...but by friendship.
Uzumaki Kushina’s death rattled Mikoto to her very core. The pair had been best friends since their Academy days, and Mikoto trusted no one else as much as she did Kushina, save her sister and - in some regards - her husband. The loss was just as keen as if she’d lost a sister, and she mourned openly for weeks. During that time, having been in the hospital often to visit her sister Manami as she recovered from her amputation, Mikoto spotted baby Naruto within the maternity ward...and she immediately knew he was Kushina’s son. He looked too much like Minato to be mistaken, and the birthdate matched perfectly.
But what confirmed it more than anything was the angry red chakra Mikoto could practically feel calling to her Sharingan: the chakra of the Kyūbi...the demon that had attacked their village, disfigured her sister, killed her best friend...and had changed the lives of her kin forever.
Few had been allowed to know about Kushina’s status as a jinchūriki. Mikoto, even if not technically allowed, had been one of them. Once the secret was out, Kushina confided much in her best friend, including the Uzumaki preference for sealing the beast due to their chakra and sealing techniques.
...first Konoha had let someone steal the Kyūbi and thereby kill her best friend. Then they sealed the beast into her baby, and left him an orphan.
     Mikoto wouldn’t stand for it.
She’d gone - after leaving her boys at home - straight to Hiruzen’s office, demanding to adopt the boy. Who else was more suitable than the best friend of his mother? Jiraiya, his godfather, was nowhere to be found, and was hardly in the position to care for a newborn. Mikoto was an experienced mother, and already loved the boy like a son as the child of her closest friend. He didn’t have to grow up alone and ostracized. He had her.
     ...but the council refused.
     And she knew why.
It was their decision that he would remain parentless, alone, and kept ignorant of his past and lineage. There was a loving, familiar family just waiting for him...and the council refused.
It boiled her blood like few things had ever done in her nearly three decades of life. It was then that Mikoto truly realized there would be no overcoming the bias against them. There would be no justice - for them, for those like Naruto...none of it was fair.
So, it was with the weight of her clan’s and her best friend’s son’s lives on her back that Mikoto fully aligned herself with the coup, and saw it through until the end...when her own son cut her down for the sake of a village that would throw him, too, away when the time came. Danzō, Koharu, Homura, and Hiruzen: it was them she cursed just as Itachi’s blade swung.
...she refused to forgive them, even in death. ]

me: i don’t even think about naruto nowadays
also me: but mikoto’s friendship with kushina should have been brought to the forefront, because the rest of canon would make far more sense. it goes like this: mikoto is one of kushina’s closest friends and consequently, one of the prime suspects regarding the kyuubi’s attack on konoha. because she’s the only one who knew kushina’s due date outside of the third, biwako, minato and taji. minato still doesn’t know who the masked dude who unleashed kurama is, but he does see the sharingan, and he manages to relay that info to hiruzen before he dies.
so, while fires are still being put out, bodies being identified and everyone’s still in shock, mikoto is questioned for hours because they suspect her of leaking info about kushina to the masked man. (she’s also a jonin...so i say she has the sharingan.) in reality, kushina didn’t tell her that much info, but the investigators are like “how do we know that you’re telling the truth that you didn’t know, you two were such close friends. she trusted you, didn’t she.” in the end they’re all “we don’t have enough evidence to prove you were involved but you will under no circumstances interact with or approach the new jinchuuriki.” it’s a secret but official warning. so that explains why she never interacted with naruto, her good friend’s son at all—which is otherwise an awkward omission in canon.
and importantly, she specifically, gets bitter and angry that they believe that she would ever harm kushina. that in the eyes of the konoha, she can never escape the shadow of madara: as they see it—of course an uchiha would turn on even their closest friend and konoha someday. after all, that’s what madara—one of konoha’s very founders—did, amirite? and she’s resentful too. maybe if they trusted her enough—since she has the sharingan and could fight another sharingan-wielder or help to restrain kurama—she could have saved kushina and saved everyone killed in kurama’s rampage. so the reason for the coup isn’t just “they are unfairly discriminating against us” or “we want more power” but also “konoha’s present leadership is rotten and doesn’t allow us to lend our strength to truly protect the village.” which is why so many of other clan members supported it. instead of a vague, generic suspicion, they knew that the wife of the clan head was personally accused. that konoha’s leadership thought she would try to destroy the very village her family helped to found—is beyond offensive and insulting. and that’s how it all begins. Ty for coming to my talk.
