What perfumes do the HL boys wear, by a complete perfume lover who is not an expert.

Hello there. I have been inactive for too long. Ever since my label as a scent witch by @pandanscafanfiction and being bullied by @tennoujinerin to post this, here it is. What perfumes I think the HL boys would wear:

I know I have done this before but after some revision and seeing how each character has been developed, lo and behold my new choices.

Sebastian Sallow:

Ah, the one who stole our hearts at first when we played the game. I chose Cedarwood as his main scent note for it's association with healing and death. Sebastian is an all rounder, not the type to have multiple bottles, one scent will do the job. Burberry's Hero, YSL's La Nuit De La Homme and Margiela Replica's Whispers in the Library (I chose this on purpose) have Cedarwood as it's note

Ominis Gaunt:

Ominis is upper class but it doesn't strike me as someone who wants to shout his status. It is a kind of scent that is subtle but you know it comes from the upper class. For that I chose Leather fragrances as it usually wears slowly on the skin, but on the right person it comes across as a quiet strong person. Gucci's Guilty Absolute, Dior's Fahrenheit and Margiela Replica's Jazz club are a great reflection of this.

Garreth Weasley:

As a potioneer who relies on his nose a lot, Garreth wouldn't see the point of wearing perfume. At best he would just need something that smells clean and fresh, but I added some citrusy notes for his fun loving nature. For that Chanel's Allure Homme Sport and Dior Homme Cologne would do the trick. To get is attention, choose a scent that sits close to the skin in an almost intimate level that would turn his head, such as Margiela Replica's Lazy Sunday Morning.

Leander Prewett:

For Leander I actually went for "Annoying" fragrances at first but seeing how he has been developed into the fandom, I rearranged for scents that are fresh with a twist. I wanted something that comes across as a people pleaser but there is the note that you can't put your nose to it (It's Rosemary) that makes you take a second sniff. For that, Armani's Aqua Di Gio Porfumo, Bvlgari's Aqva pour Homme and Issey Miyake's Fusion d'Issey are my picks.

Amit Thakkar:

I really wanted to pay homage to India for Amit, as India is the land where scents are used quite frequently in daily life. I chose a sandalwood perfume (Diptyque's Tam Dao) for it's usage in the worship of the Hindu Gods and Goddess, Cardamom (D&G The One) for it's usage in food and Saffron ( Penhaligon's Babylon) for the colour worn by Hindu Priests ( it symbolic of Sunsets/Sunrise and healing, apparently).

Andrew Larson:

I am amazed at the headcanons for Andrew but I digress he doesn't smell like herbs. Instead I chose Juniper Berries! Is this an odd choice? Of course, but considering it's freshness yet spicy notes with medicinal properties (not to mention it being found in most parts of the globe) it is a timeless scent. I tried my best to find scents that are light, something not too strong as it will need to sit close to the skin. Take a peek with Blvgari's Glacial Essence, Gucci's Guilty Cologne Pour Homme and Penhaligon's Juniper Sling.

The idea of figuring out what the Only Friends characters smell like came up in a discussion I was having and it made me want to assign everyone a fragrance--like, the perfume/cologne kind, not just some kind of smell. What follows is not based on any close reading of the show and is full of stuff I made up but it's made-up stuff that is consistent with how I'm currently thinking about the characters (without having had the repeated viewings or having engaged in the detailed analysis some have with this show). So, you know, nothing serious. But I enjoyed writing it.

Top: Cuir Oud Padishah (Auphorie)

Top prides himself on knowing about niche things that are considered high-quality by discriminating people so of course he likes Auphorie. The fact that the label is from Southeast Asia (Malaysia, specifically) appeals to him as well. This fragrance is heavy on animalic, musky notes which I think Top would think makes him some kind of sexy badass (it doesn't), and it has a prominent oud note, and the rare and fancy aspect of oud is something that would appeal to his snobby side. Whenever someone compliments Top on this fragrance he launches into a whole spiel about Auphorie and small-batch natural perfumery that comes off as pedantic to anyone who isn't already convinced he's the second coming.

Mew: En Passant (Frederic Malle)

Mew likes that this is from a fancy, niche label that isn't that well-known, and he likes that it's a unisex scent because he likes being a little hard to pin down in that department, but his favorite thing about this fragrance is that the combination of lilac, cucumber, and springy green notes reads as really innocent while actually being low-key alluring. The sweet drydown is another aspect that is like the version of himself that Mew presents to the world. Someone on Fragrantica pointed out that "en passant" is, among other things, the name of a chess move in which a player captures an opponent's pawn while passing by them during an opening move and I think that is just so Mew.

Sand: L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme (Issey Miyake)

This is a pretty affordable fragrance but definitely an interesting enough composition to interest a guy like Sand who is a little particular when it comes to his aesthetic preferences. It's also from the 90s, like some other things Sand likes, and I can totally see him checking ebay to get a vintage bottle. In theory it hasn't been reformulated but he'd be convinced that older was better. This would also be a likely crowd pleaser across genders which is something Sand would be into. L'Eau d'Issey (the fragrance for women, which came first) was kind of an un-perfume perfume, fresh and translucent but practically nonexistent. The Pour Homme variant is more balanced thanks to some low end from woody, aromatic, and spicy notes. It's still on the subtler side, though, so he wouldn't have to worry about seeming like he's trying too hard even if he oversprayed, and you know Sand has a horror of seeming like he's trying too hard. My choice of this fragrance for Sand may be influenced by a certain singer/guitar player/songwriter person I dated in the early 2000s who was very popular with his gender of choice, had a whole collection of different-colored Converse low-tops with contrasting shoelaces, and used to spray a puff of L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme into the air in front of him then step into the cloud because a girl taught him to do that once.

Ray: Philosykos (Diptyque)

This was Ray's mom's signature perfume. It's distinctive and sophisticated but easy to like, exactly how she wanted people to see her. She's kind of like Ray in that way--like him, she was high-maintenance but always wanted to seem just the opposite. The shift from mother to son worked out well because it's a very gender-neutral fragrance. At first Ray wore it in remembrance of his mom and then he just stopped thinking about it and just kept wearing it out of habit. He can hardly perceive it anymore after all these years but every so often he gets complimented by a stranger and it makes him get a little bit full of himself. Philosykos often gets described as the photorealistic scent of a fig tree--not the fruit, but the whole tree--and Ray likes to imagine that it's the smell of a particular tree someone would remember fondly from their family home even though he has never felt that rooted in any place ever.

Boston: Sauvage (Dior)

Boston's taste in fragrances is basic as fuck but that works really well for him, because what he needs is something that appeals to the lowest common denominator of dudes. He secretly wishes this was more overpriced because while he doesn't like to admit he's a rich kid, he has a secret love of pointlessly exclusive things. But he gets more attention with this one than he did when he wore Gucci Guilty so he keeps wearing it. He originally tried it because he saw a review by some straight guy complaining that he didn't get compliments from women on this scent, only other dudes, and he's had the same experience, but doesn't see it as a problem for obvious reasons. Boston has become inured to the smell of this stuff and barely notices it anymore, but then he barely noticed it in the first place. It was and is only a means to an end for him.

Nick: Bleu de Chanel (Chanel)

Nick's last job was at a kiosk in a mall and he used to visit the perfume section of this one department store on breaks because a hot guy worked there. The hot guy recommended this stuff, and when Nick smelled it he thought it smelled like something an extremely cool and attractive person would wear. After that he was determined to get it somehow despite its ridiculous price tag. He never got the hot guy's number but he did convince him to sell him a half-empty tester of this under the table for (relatively) cheap. He uses it sparingly to try to make it last but sometimes he sprays it on his sheets and pretends the hot guy from the perfume counter stayed over.

Anne Sallow: Bvlgari's Wood Essence

MC kept coming around since Sebastian first brought him over Feldcroft. It was nice, having someone else to talk to other than Ominis and Sebastian. Anne didn't want to admit it, but she was looking forward to MC's visits. That one particular visit came with a surprise, an early Christmas gift. MC had given her a scarf knitted in green and peach wool, saying something that she needed to keep warm at all times. Hers was getting threadbare. Anne shyly took the scarf and got that wiff of comfort. At first it was the smell of citrus and lemon, giving way to a cedarwood note that crept up to her nostrils. A warm scent that reassured her everything will be all right, like a cozy blanket and a cup of hot tea. For a minute she thought MC was giving her a hug and telling her she will be all right and loved. Anne slept with that scarf that night. Uncle Solomon didn't ask questions, to her relief.

Poppy Sweeting : Jo Malone's Poppy & Barley

She only wanted to know if Highwing was doing okay. MC understood and took her into the room of requirement, showing Poppy the costal vivarium where Highwing came down, greeting the two of them. MC let the two of them catch up, while he cared for the rest of the beasts. Highwings is doing fine, and in fact a mother to a baby hippogriff! She is overjoyed that Highwing now has a safe home. Wait, Highwing, what do you mean, thanks to that nice smelling gentleman? Oh, you mean MC. That comment on him being nice smelling got Poppy curious, making her get up and approach MC from behind. Oh, she understood what Highwing meant. MC's scent was light, oddly enough. It smelt like the blackcurrants her grandma used to pick, but then it fades ever so gently to a green woody note from barley and.... poppy? Whatever it was, MC smelt like a gentle sunrise in a tiny British cottage in the countryside, with a bowl of boiled oats to ensure one was ready for the day. Poppy didn't even know she was that close to MC until MC turned around, accidentally making her fell to the floor. MC was startled but helped Poppy get up, telling her to be careful. Damn, Highwing was right. He smelled nice.

Imelda Reyes : Frederic Malle's Geranium Pour Monsieur

She is incredibly frustrated with MC right now. How is it he not only beat her time, but scored higher as a Chaser? It was not a good idea to challenge him to see if he had a place within a Qudditich team. When MC landed, a flurry of tirades came his way. Imelda grabbed his robes and kept saying how it wasn't fair, but MC's shocked expression made her stop. MC said that she has always been healthy competition, needing someone to keep him on his toes. He gave her a reassuring smile as he left to get changed. Imelda sunk to her knees. That wasn't the only reason she stopped herself from her rant towards MC. When shaking MC, she caught the smell of mint and geranium that was fresh, but that quickly gave way to the spicy notes of cinnamon and clove. It teased her, taunted her to chase after him and demand for another rematch like an enemy that has romantic feelings for you. How dare MC beat her and now taunt her nose with that perfume? That's it. She is getting up and wanting another round of Quidditch practice with MC.

Natsai Onai : Issey Miyake's L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme

The camp containing the last of Harlow's men didn't know what hit them. Natty asked MC to come along, she can always use a backup partner. MC happily agreed, tagging along as the flurry of dark wizards attacked them upon sight. It was a tough battle, when did she consume this much Wiggenweld potions? Natty admitted it was getting to her, her energy spent. She had to take a moment to catch her breath when she felt herself being tackled to the ground forcefully by MC. MC asked if she was all right and she nodded, trying to compose herself as MC got up, striking on finishing the last Ashwinder that attacked her. What caught Natty by surprise was the scent on MC, a yuzu and citrusy note that blended well into the warmth of nutmeg and cinnamon, with musk holding everything together. It was a clean, fresh scent that wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty if he has to. It reminded Natty of a brave man, her father. MC called out to Natty, telling her the camp was cleared. She shook her head as she headed to MC's direction, trying to focus on what just happened.

Samantha Dale : Tom Ford's Mandarino di Amalfi

Ok, she did owe MC for helping her with her brother. So here she was in the Herbology class, helping MC to play catch up. Admittedly, MC is a fast learner, she only really needed to give a few pointers as MC scribbled furiously on his notebook. There was something bothering her nose. Sure, Samantha was used to the scent of every plant under the sun, but to smell a fresh citrus of grapefruit and lemons in the middle of winter is and oddity. Where did that orange blossom came from, alongside with the slight spicy note of pepper and coriander? Samantha let her nose trail and oh. MC. That scent was on his shirt as he muttered to himself, adjusting his tie. That scent got stronger, hitting Samantha like a brick. She felt like her whole being transported to the lemon fields of Almalfi, Italy, dancing her way into the sunset instead of dreary Hogwarts. Samantha didn't even knew MC called her name, asking her what plant this was. Oh right, she composed herself and answered the question the best she could, trying to hide her blush.
