Medication.

When I was 10 years old, I was sent to my first juvenile facility. I arrived after lights out and was sent straight to bed. The next morning, I was woken up and told to stand in the line for medication. Confused, I stood at the end of the line and when it was my turn, I was handed a little paper cup with a cocktail of pills inside of it and another paper cup with water. When I asked what they were for, I was told that I had been diagnosed by the Psychiatrist with bipolar.  A man that had never spoken to me diagnosed me, a 10 year old child, less than 8 hours after I had arrived (nearly all of which was spent asleep) with bipolar disorder.  I swallowed the pills. I had no choice. For the next 5 and a half years I would be put on more and more medication. Not once did I actually see or speak to a doctor, much less an actual Psychiatrist.

I don’t usually post this kind of thing but I really think it’s important. Historically residental style re-education schools are always a fucking disaster. Individuals who go through these programs experience life long trauma like Complex PTSD, PTSD and other trauma induced anxiety and depressive disorders. the practices used at Provos’s Desert School have there roots in the Charter Medical a for profit psychiatric hospital chain. Children of Fuedamentalist Christian who didn’t fit the norms and foster children from with mental health problems from all backgrounds were frequently given to the care of this institution. The troubled teen industry is wracked with abuse and continuously failures to proved safe and adequate care for the children and adolescents confined at these institutions. The staff at these organizations are frequently uneducated in providing any kind of psychiatric care. The whole troubled teen industry needs to be shut down. These kids needed real psychiatric help not a abusive trauma filled reeducation.

The abuse she suffered which includes but is not limited to a forceful escort in the middle of the night to the facility, solitary confinement, mandatory prescribed medication, and verbal abuse led to a lifetime of nightmares, PTSD, trust issues and more.
