Something I keep seeing when I speak to others about MTMTE Megatron is basically the idea that he's going on a personal journey to become a better person, that the point isn't for him to be "redeemed" but for him to get a chance to do good and die as a person he can live with again. That MTMTE presents a unique take on this because being away from Cybertron gives Megatron a chance to be a person rather than a political figure and this is how it gives him more depth as a character. Or just generally pointing out in a narrative sense that Megatron being in MTMTE limits his story options so of course his story is going to be more focused on a personal journey than on politics of him dealing with the Decepticons/Earth/etc and that just because JRO made a choice to take that path with Megatron doesn't mean that it's inherently bad.
And I'm just, mmm like I understand all of those points and acknowledge that they all contributed to the MTMTE Megatron we got. I even think that without JRO writing Megatron we wouldn't have had his lore be as fleshed out and 3D as it ended up becoming.
(Post starts out as a sort of meta analysis or at least me giving a reasoned explanation for my interpretation of the story, ends up being petty bitching in the last 1-2 paragraphs)
I just..... I just personally don't agree with the "he's becoming a better person by getting a chance to relax and experience happiness and trust after a life of trauma" as being the best choice for his character? Because the problem is that maybe if he were a random Decepticon foot soldier that would be appropriate, but he was literally the leader of the Decepticons that made them Like That and has political/cultural/societal responsibility for why things are the way they are? To be completely frank, I don't care about him going on a personal journey for self-peace, I think that he should become a better person by helping to un-fuck all the things he actually screwed up???
Like idc about the debate of whether he can be "redeemed" or if he should've been killed/imprisoned/etc at the ending. It just comes down to the fact that for me personally, I feel that since Megatron's wrongdoings were at a social level, him "being a better person" would've been better shown by him engaging with those people who he wronged instead of just going on a frigging personal journey for his legacy and self-peace???
Especially since in other series (exRID, possibly Windblade) we literally got plots like "the neutrals hate Autobots but they hate Decepticons even more" and "the Decepticons have been taken over by Galvatron and are now invading earth 2 electric boogaloo" and "yeah the Decepticons are literally living in slums because people hate them so much and won't give them any work." It just leaves me wondering why in the hell people are like, "oh Megatron got to be happy and have a chance to be a normal person." I don't want him to be normal! I want him to repay his debts to the people he actually wronged! Like if you want to cast Megatron as a hero of the people so badly (which so many of his stans do as if he actually cared about the Cons) then how do you reconcile the fact that Megatron just fucked off and left the Decepticons to suffer on Cybertron? Including some of them attacking during his trial and getting killed and Megatron is basically like "sorry, I'm not coming with you and this isn't going to work." And then Megatron complains about "toxic Decepticon loyalty" as if he didn't literally make them that way? Like I get that MTMTE Megatron is still an asshole but if you've read something besides MTMTE and know what the Decepticons are going through, it just ends up being really grating.
I just don't see Megatron as being a particularly good hero or having a particularly fulfilling story if he's completely isolated from all the bad things he did on Cybertron/the way the Decepticons are suffering until LL#25 where it's like "ah damn I'm going to trial now, well this is what I deserve so it's fine." Why could we not have seen something like Megatron trying to deradicalize the Decepticons or change their public image so they could integrate into normal Cybertron again? They were living in SLUMS and getting gunned down by Starscream's badgeless enforcers!
The best we got was the Functionist Universe but like.... I'm sorry, but JRO inventing a whole alternate universe for Megatron to save doesn't do jack shit to save or fix the people he left behind in this one. It was especially grating to read because JRO literally wrote in someone saying "you saved billions of lives from the Functionists" as if he was trying really hard to show how good Megatron is because he saved people (and also if not for Megatron existing Cybertron would be even worse and half of your faves would be enslaved or dead, also the Functionist Council was going to genocide organics too so technically they're WORSE than Megatron since they hate organics AND want to enslave their own race).
I read Barber's, JRO's, and MScott's series concurrently using the omnibus + a release order list for phase 3, and after all that I'm kind of puzzled why the fandom seems to ardently love MTMTE Megatron and think he's so well written but then also shit on Optimus for things that he did during the same points in the story? Because, and I know this is a blazing hot take, I honestly think that Optimus makes a better hero of his story than Megatron does for his, and Optimus' personal journey combines his personal and political identities into a narrative that's a lot more gruelling and questioning of his goodness than we got for Megatron in MTMTE. Which is fucking saying something considering Megatron committed crimes against sapient species and Optimus is the guy who tried to stop him from doing that and has always been pro-equal rights for all beings. But people pretty much just cherrypick things like Optimus annexing Earth or beating up Prowl and go "he's bad" and I'm like no??? IDW OP isn't a bad person or a bad character??? It's just that unlike MTMTE Megatron he's placed in a narrative that actually suits the nature of his actions and has themes that match. To the point that IMO sometimes Barber's narrative shits on Optimus excessively or paints him mainly in the most unflattering ways.
But like. It's just funny to me because Optimus spent his entire part of the story doing things like trying to stop Earth from being invaded/colonized yet again. Grappling with his identity as Prime and dealing with the fact that people literally worship him vs. the fact that his upbringing made him see the Primacy as nothing more than a facade of authority/leadership. Having people get mad at him for prioritizing politics over friendship/relationships with other people. Even getting shit on for being a cop a decent amount so people can STFU about IDW OP being "copaganda" or "not held responsible for his actions". The problems that Optimus dealt with were personal because they had to do with his self-doubt, culpability for the war as a leader of one of the armies, distance from his soldiers, etc. But all of these are also POLITICAL struggles. Because Optimus gave up on the chance to just be a normal person having personal struggles when he chose to become a LEADER, which also means that he's held to extremely high standards that he regularly fails at in the eyes of others.
That's why, to me, MTMTE Megatron falls flat in comparison and really as a "hero" or heel-face character in general? Because he also made a decision to be a leader, and IMO once you do things like become the commander of an army and start your own galactic empire, you lose the right to prioritize your personal problems and instead are obligated by the power you've chosen to wield to focus on your POLITICAL problems. If Megatron's power, influence, and crimes are of a social-political nature, then his heel-face turn arc and ways of showing that he's a better person/helping to heal what little damage he possibly can should have been shown with actions that help on a social-political LEVEL. That's why I'm not particularly impressed with his character arc and feel as if it was overhyped by other people in this fandom: sure, the extra character depth and emotion is nice, but I'm not really going to see him as extraordinary or even particularly good when the extent of him "becoming a better person" happens entirely on a random road trip to fuck-off nowhere. Especially not when the ending of LL tried to sell me a "they lived happily ever after" ending while basically leaving the freaking MUTINY as just Rodimus going "oh it's okay you're forgiven, we're all together again" and I guess everyone was fine with Megatron and wanted to spend an eternity on a ship with him just because Getaway died.
This is why I like (the concept/themes of) exRID/OP and the way Optimus' character arc was handled a lot more. Because for Optimus, the personal and the political were as one. He was held accountable for his actions towards others and the disruptive effects they had on a social level, sometimes to a ridiculous extent (the fucking "oh Megatron is an Autobot so now that makes the Autobots colonizers" plot and that stupid colonist screaming about how Optimus is "literally fascist" my beloathed). Even his very personal issues like his relationship with Zeta were still cast in a wider lens of, yeah this is a personal struggle that Orion faced, but he was still part of a Society TM and his actions were sometimes ill-informed or harmful to others. Even if I had a lot of problems with the way Optimus' story was written by Barber (plot holes, little meaningful character interaction, forced conflicts), at least the BASELINE of it was way better than Megatron's in MTMTE. Especially since Optimus' struggle was explictly about things like struggling with responsibility and how he feels he HAS to intervene in political affairs because has to save people/make up for his past mistakes. That's something that a good leader/good person actually does, so I found Optimus to be a better hero (even if his actions weren't all "good") because he was trying to be a good person by actually getting involved with Cybertron/Earth and subjecting himself to something he hates (leadership, war) and dealing with a shitload of criticism instead of just going on a fuckin "personal journey" lksdlkfsd.
Which just makes me extra salty that people hold up MTMTE Megatron as the pinnacle of Megatrons and literally the best Transformers writing evar! while turning up their nose and ignoring or outright despising IDW Optimus. Like okay. I guess since Megatron got handled with silk gloves on while Optimus got put through the wringer of being shit on by every other person in the story, it's easier for you to pretend that Megatron is a poor uwu boy who just needs friendship and love while Optimus is literally the worst bastard to ever exist. Or maybe it's just that since Optimus' story involves him sometimes fucking up, being criticized, or making things worse, that makes him morally bad. As opposed to Megatron who disrupted a lot of other characters' stories in MTMTE, had to have an entire alternate universe invented so that he could "save lives," and got to sail off on a quantum Lost Light happily ever after, so since he's happy and the story says he saved people that means he's a good hero.

Well that got my back up right off, oof.
I was browsing through the TV Tropes character page for Ravenloft, because it gives a nice intro to older lore, and I came across this entry on Addar, Darklord of the Phantasmal Forest:
“Mentioned in the writeups for the Shadow Unicorns, Addar was promoted to Darklord status in the Kargatane's Book of Sacrifices netbook. Hailing from a sylvan forest on an unknown Prime world, Addar chafed against the traditions of unicorns submitting to elven maidens as bonded steeds, seeing such an act not as a bond of partnership and purity, but a symbol of humiliation and servitude. Though the other benevolent fey spirits of his forest recoiled from such bitter, poisonous prejudice, darker spirits rejoiced in it. Most prominently, a female nightmare, who began to contact Addar in his dreams, seducing him with stories of a new forest, far away, where he would become a great champion and worshiped like a god, much like the guardians of his own forest. Even as Addar's ego grew on this noxious fuel, the elder fey strove to break him of his arrogance; they arranged for an elven princess of unparalleled purity and grace, a mighty paladin-in-training, to be given his name and told she was to invoke the pact with him. When she came to summon him, however, Addar fought with all his might, recoiling against what he still saw as an attempt to enslave him and reduce him to a mere beast of burden. His defiance allowed the nightmare to slip between the worlds and attack the elf-maid, setting the forest alight with her burning mane and hooves. Free of the spell, Addar began to flee, only to realize the elf-maid was caught by the flames; choked by the smoke, she couldn't hope to escape on her own... but Addar's pride would not allow him to let her ride to safety on his back. Instead, he turned and abandoned the screaming princess to her death, following the nightmare into the mists. Upon her, he fathered the first Shadow Unicorns, and became ruler of the Phantasmal Forest; a foul and dismal place of dead, dying trees whose black, noxious soul nourished only weeds and evil plants, inhabited only by dark fey and predatory beasts.”
So, okay. I just gonna … I’m gonna side with the Darklord here? Yeah.
Not on the whole ‘seduced by a dark spirit with promises of being worshipped like a god’ thing, that’s fair enough as a villain origin. Carry right on. But the bit where he saw being bound to someone as servitude, and the response of the people around him to that …
Right. So. To sum up. Addar saw being bound to an elf as being bound into servitude, and the fey around him saw this as possibly racism and definitely pride, and their ‘benevolent’ solution … was to send someone to punitively and magically bind him into said servitude against his will, specifically for the purposes of ‘breaking him of his arrogance’?
Um. Explain to me how that’s not slavery?
It doesn’t matter how pure and beautiful a paladin she was. It doesn’t matter that the bond is normally not slavery because (I’m assuming) the other unicorns consented. In this case it absolutely, one-hundred-percent was slavery, because Addar did not consent to it and they tried to magically force him anyway, and I feel like every ‘benevolent’ fey involved in the decision should have slipped immediately over into Lawful Evil, for valuing their tradition over the will and consent of one of their own.
Like, this is phrased in such a hostile way to his interpretation of what was happening to him? I just … I love how this frames him as entirely unreasonable here. That his wanting not to be bonded to anyone is ‘bitter, poisonous prejudice’, that his recoiling while being bound against his will is only struggling against what he saw as an attempt to enslave him, as if he’s wrong about that and it was blindly willful of him to fight. That this binding is explicitly meant to correct him of his arrogance, that he’s being bound to someone to humble and punish him, and somehow this is not slavery? That it’s his defiance that allows a dark spirit to slip into the world, but if you didn’t force him against his will, maybe he wouldn’t have to fight and let nightmares into the world? It’s his ‘pride’ that causes him to abandon the woman who attempted to enslave him to her death, not an entirely reasonable unwillingness to help someone who just tried to force him?
Sorry. I had a surprisingly strong reaction to this, is all.
But. This is just the TV Tropes summary of the story, so I went to look up the original, in case TV Tropes was leaving stuff out or putting a slant on the story in the process of repeating it. And … sort of. The original does gentle a few things:
Addar was not aware of the nightmare’s nature at first
The fey spirits were not aware of the nightmare at all, since she was only approaching the unicorn in his dreams
The spirits could feel a corruption in his soul as a result of the nightmare’s temptations, and without knowledge of her presence, his hatred of ‘servitude’ was the only thing they could tie that corruption to. This doesn’t make their ‘solution’ any better, but it explains a bit why they were so adamant, if the nightmare was having a tangible magical effect for the worse on him
The spirits didn’t think of it as ‘breaking him of his arrogance’, they thought of it as teaching him ‘a lesson about the virtue of sharing and partnership’
The elf they chose had no knowledge whatsoever of any of this, she was just told that Addar was a unicorn who wished to bind with her and was given permission to perform the ritual
She spammed the ritual repeatedly despite his resistance because she didn’t know what was happening and thought he might be trapped somewhere
He realised she was in danger, and turned away from her truly because he didn’t want to bear any elf, and he thought another unicorn for whom that wouldn’t be a problem would reach her in time
Things the original story doesn’t help, though:
It still seems to imply that a unicorn must bind with someone pure, whether they want to or not, and everyone is apparently fine with that
“Such bitter thoughts, coming from an average person, would normally be seen as mere prejudices, and might even go unnoticed by most others. But it was no less than an appointed guardian of Goodness and Nature who was spitting those poisoned words, and that was seen with concern by some inhabitants of the forest, and with joy by others. These last were, of course, creatures of darkness and foul spirits, who were barely tolerated by others as part of the natural balance.” Virtue and goodness mean surrendering your right to autonomy, but for other people wanting to not bind yourself to someone is okay?
“She was training to be a noble warrior-priestess, and the ancient spirits dictated that Addar should be her steed. So, she was told Addar's name and given permission to tame him. The spirits thought he would finally accept the noble partner and once again become true to his nature, leaving the perverted ideas behind forever.” She’s beautiful and virtuous, so she deserves to ride him, and he should leave all ‘perverted ideas’ of bodily autonomy behind him
The ritual is still explicitly a forceful spell, an enchantment that does not require the consent of the unicorn, and can wear away their strength to resist: “Addar, who was finally losing his powers to resist the enchantment, suddenly felt free once again, when the nightmare took his place.”
“As he turned around one last time to see the princess choking to death, he knew in his corrupted heart that he was never going to allow anyone to ride him, under no circumstances. He would be king of his own forest.” This is meant to be the heart of why he’s a Darklord, the epitome of his corruption, and yes it’s extremely selfish to refuse to carry someone out of a literal fire that was burning her to death, and yes to the whole ‘prideful desire to be king and ruler no matter the cost’ thing, but on the other hand is it really meant to be evil to not want people to feel free to use your body against your will just because of your species?
I just … this whole thing sort of rubbed me completely the wrong way. It’s an odd thing to get riled up over, I know. But the whole … Ignore bodily autonomy, ignore consent, take someone’s species as license to bind them into service, declare them evil for not wanting to allow that, if they object too many times just magically force them anyway …
Look. The base fact is, the binding of the ritual is slavery and is not a ‘partnership’ and ‘a prize and honor for both beings’ in this case, for the sole and simple reason that Addar did not consent and everyone else ignored that and tried to force it on him anyway. Partnership requires consent on both ends, and forcing someone into servitude against their will is sort of the definition of slavery.
I just … I’m gonna side with the Darklord here. Not on the whole ‘allow myself to be corrupted and move to my own world where I’ll be king’ part, but on the whole ‘refuse to allow someone to use my body against my will and rebel when they attempt to magically force the issue’? Absolutely yes. The spirits were completely in the wrong there. The elf maiden not so much, because she didn’t know and acted in innocence towards someone she thought had consented, and it’s definitely tragic that she died for that, but I’m mostly going to put the blame for that on the spirits as well. Addar maybe should have helped her when he saw her dying, but they’d given him literally every reason not to by tricking her into, essentially, trying to enslave him and override his will. If someone tries to magically enslave me no matter how hard or long I fight, and winds up in mortal peril because of it, I’m not going to be too pushed about helping them out of that mortal peril either. Gonna be honest.
I reacted really strongly to this. Oof. Sorry.
It’s just … is it just me, or does D&D sometimes have some problems with consent, particularly when it comes to issues of magic, as well as some really dodgy views of ‘virtue’ and ‘evil’, particularly when it comes to magical species and what’s expected of them?

It had been a good idea. For her, if for no one else. And they didn’t look like they were doing poorly without her - not that she had ever doubted that. She left someone responsible in charge; someone she watched mature and rise and fall and rise again; they’d be fine. They were fine.
The Keeper smiled as she leaned on the bridge’s railing with her chin in the palm of one hand, her grey tail curling up fondly as a Lalafell threw open the doors of the Mare Tranquilitatis -- er, Shady Boughs -- with an armload of gardening implements. The young woman gently kicked the door shut behind her and dodged around the table on the front porch, maneuvered down the stairs, and dropped the lot of tools in a semi-organized manner on the edge of one of the garden plots in the front yard, made a show of rolling up their sleeves, tugging the brim of their hat into place, and diving in to dig out the weeds and tend for whatever crop they had coming in. 
The sunlight felt good. The breeze off the lake and the sound of the little waves upon the shore were relaxing, tranquil, and she closed her eyes and breathed in the smell of Lavender Beds, of home, though she made no move towards the house across the waters. This feeling was different than before, where home felt like the night, the wind rushing across the roof, the cacophony of the waterfall behind their little cottage; the shouting, the running, the friends bursting in at all hours. Back when they couldn’t afford their own houses. Then, they were constantly in each others’ hair and business and lives. … but those friends were gone now, moved on with their lives and their own adventures, and she’d been trying that too, lately, hadn’t she?
The first to drift had been Kel; it hadn’t been long after moving into the larger house in a different district - this district - that he had taken up semi-permanent residence in Ishgard, setting in motion what would eventually become the Ishgard Restoration Project. She’d seen him once or twice around the city - they had had tea once, but he was a busy man now and while she had thought his talk a little technical before this undertaking, now it was overwhelming. Not in a bad way - in that… well, that nostalgic Kel sort of way. 
Next had been… Cae. Cae had always been the “mom friend”: strong and driven and organized and strict with her expectations, and welcoming, caring, people-oriented. She was a caretaker and a fierce friend and she missed having her influence in her life, but somewhere along the way they had drifted, and while Cae had continued to count herself part of the Pretty Guardians for a long while after, she felt it was more for nostalgia and loyalty than for that feeling of connectedness. She had moved on - she met new friends, started an amazing and flowery business - she was a full-time healer, now, and wandered to collect the best herbs for both her medicines and her tea; her place was very pretty, very soft and pastel, and very much Cae. She seemed happy, and she was glad for her. And for Kal, and L’uana; she didn’t often have a reason to visit Shirogane these days, but she always made a habit of stopping by when she was there, and when the big-hearted owner wasn’t home, she doodled in her guestbook.
During that time was when their influx of new recruits really started to grow; at first, it was just one or two, like in the old days: just picking up strays that needed a home, like Alannah and Kel; but over time their registered numbers really started to climb as individual members started picking up one or two adventurers that needed an affiliation for safety, even if they didn’t really stick around the house all that often. She had been happy to give that: the Pretty Guardians were there to help, even if it were just to lend their name and a hand to their members when necessary. Some, however, stuck around, getting close with everyone, even as the old guard started fading away…
Alannah got married to that rascal Nine from the neighbourhood around their first Free Company cottage - their story not exactly typical in any way beyond ‘they were somewhat neighbours’, but that was their story; she was happy for their happy ending, even though it was sad to watch her move out of Lavender Beds and into a charming little cottage in La Noscea. She wasn’t around as often after that, not that she could blame her. She had a baby, Ash, that she brought back for meetings and playdates with her “aunties”; the little girl was adorable and was fun to teach things to that Alannah may not have exactly wanted her to learn so quickly, but that’s what she got for their free babysitting services. Alannah was still there, welcoming in new members, keeping track of the day-to-day goings-on, connected to the house through moogle mail and linkshell while not there in person. She entrusted her with everything.
But it had always been Adelpha and her that were the fixtures of the house - its caretakers, trainers of new recruits, calling shots, and organizing FC activities, but…
Adelpha’s retirement had been unexpected. She wasn’t that far away - she was back in Gridania, having taken a steady job as a researcher, going into the family business after her father had suffered a fall. She knew her father - they had met through her father; but what she was doing wasn’t just being noble or making a sacrifice for her family, it was what she wanted to do. They had been friends for nearly a decade; she had dragged Adelpha clear across Eorzea and beyond, had pulled her into the Scions, thrown her into dangerous situations and jumped in right after. They’d had fun; they were each other’s backup. Adelpha was her playmate, her grumpy, easily-aggravated-on-the-outside, clearly-enjoying-acting-that-way-on-the-inside best friend. … but adventuring forever hadn’t been her dream. 
It was Sinaka’s. 
And maybe that was what she needed to realize, and to let go of. All of her original friends had moved on, left their adventuring in their twenties or early twenties, and settled down into the occupation they wanted to have for the rest of their lives: occupations that made them happy and fulfilled, callings that they had found and fought for, and while that didn’t align with the dream they had shared nine years ago, it didn’t make that dream any less real. The time they had spent together had been real, and special, and something she wouldn’t forget for the rest of her life, and had to believe that they would never forget, either. 
But still, Adelpha leaving had led to a period of loss for her: the end of an era, and the idea of facing it while still running operations for the new recruits -- a reference she really had to stop making, seeing as how it had been years since most of them had joined now -- left her feeling hollow, unable to give the same lively performance they were used to, so she took time off to travel, to reflect, to see if adventuring was still her calling or if she had been hanging on out of duty and nostalgia and stubborn loyalty to the people of her past… 
It had been five months since she had transferred leadership to Alannah and left in the middle of the night. She had left a letter, sure, but she could just imagine the face the hyur would have had upon reading it. She grinned, taking in a deep breath that smelled of water lilies, and let it out slowly. 
She wasn’t ready to go back just yet, but she would be.
It was good to see the place was still standing, though, and that the symbol above the door still matched the pin she wore on her lapel, even if the house’s face had changed drastically from when she had seen it last. She didn’t know how Alannah was dealing with all the flowers, but it looked nice. 
The Pretty Guardians were okay.
And she was okay.

Waow XD (btw I had headcanoned years ago that her Path Companion, Sol, had traveled not 5 years into the future but to a different shard and man did shadowbringers bring me glee in letting that be a storyline I could wrap up hahahah)) but also give me a little moment to say...

Thief of Light? Ooh. I’vve 8een rather lookin forwward to this one. I’m sure none of you can guess wwhy ::::p Here’s my take on Vriska Serket’s Mythological Role, the…
Title: Thief of Light
Title Breakdown: One who actively appropriates (steals, lays claim to, acquires, seeks out) Light (relevance, attention, literal light, knowledge/information, and fortune)
Role in the Session: So, the first thing that I think we ought to consider when discussing Thieves is that they’re not, by nature, greedy. Rather, they so want their Aspect because they lack it, because they believe (usually accurately) that they have been unjustly deprived of it. The reason Thieves are often bound to become greedy is that in their quest to acquire what they lack, they often don’t know when to stop, taking more and more until they realize that they had what they needed long ago. This is not the Role of a Thief; rather, this is the result of a Thief failing to step into their Role. More on that later.
The next thing we ought to consider is what it means to be deprived of Light. Light is an Aspect most commonly associated with Luck, due to Vriska Serket’s reliance on it as a tool, and the heavy-handed luck/fortune symbolism that lingers around her. However, on an ever-so-slightly-more meta level, Light is about focus and attention. Vriska, for example, grew up in a viciously oppressive society, literally and figuratively overshadowed by her cruel and demanding Lusus Naturae, an archetypal “Devouring Mother” figure that not only refused to allow her to “grow up” symbolically, but also demanded that she kill her peers in order to sustain its ongoing existence. Vriska was, to but it bluntly, out of luck, and was forced to kill or be killed, to satiate a Void that was not hers but was imposed upon her by an external force. This is but one possible way that the privation of Light could manifest – indeed, we see it manifest rather differently later in Vriska (Vriska)’s narrative arc – but it highlights the sort of desperation that pushes Thieves into their Role.
A fully realized Thief of Light is one who is able to win their luck back, get their share of the spotlight, and know when to stop. Just as all Passive Classes struggle to embrace their Aspect and direct its flow, so too do Active Classes struggle to resist the temptation to push their Aspect beyond its limits. A Thief at their best steals away things that would stand in the way of their Session’s success and repurposes them to serve the team’s interests. While a Thief can’t share what they steal, as might a Rogue, they can nonetheless use the resources they appropriate from a Session’s enemies for the common good, rather than for more selfish aims. Because they’re the only ones capable of accessing and utilizing certain resources, Thieves are often drawn to last-minute feats of heroism, providing the team the “final blow” necessary to secure their victory. A Seer of Mind could well provide the Thief of Light with the wisdom and guidance needed to use their knowledge and fortune for just purposes; likewise, a Blood player (perhaps a Knight or a Page) could act as both a line of support and a staying hand to the Thief, helping to ensure that they retain their allegiance to the team despite their Role’s tendency to try to go it alone.
Opposite Role: The Page of Void is one who equips others with, or call others to defend and serve, darkness, secrecy, silence, and oblivion. Besides the fact that those are concepts and forces that the Thief of Light is all-but-certain to despise, there’s also the fact that the Thief and the Bard have one of, if not the, widest Active-Passive disparity of any Opposed pair of Classes. The Thief of Light will likely look down on the Page as cowardly, due to Pages’ unfortunate tendency to begin the game, and to remain for a long while, incompetent when it comes to the use of their Aspect. The divide between them may grow yet sharper and more antagonistic if and when the Page of Void reaches the height of their powers, as the Thief would harbor a rather impassioned hatred towards the notion of being called to “serve Void” – such service would be terribly reminiscent of the time they spent in the absence of Light.
God Tier Powers
Light is the Actual-Associative Aspect, and as mentioned above, it is associated with such domains as attention/relevance, knowledge/information, and fortune/luck. It may also have symbolic connections to the Light of Skaia, in parallel to Void’s connections to the Furthest Ring. The Thief is the Active Appropriation Class, whose abilities center around acquiring their Aspect (usually at the expense of whoever happens to be nearby) and using it to their advantage at the most opportune moment. With these things in mind, as well as our knowledge of the beloved canon Thief of Light, Vriska “Fucking” Serket, here are a few ideas as to the powers an Ascended one might have access to…
Lights Out: The Thief of Light, to put it bluntly, knocks someone out – rendering them unconscious and thereby depriving them of their access to Light in the form of information. Note that unlike a Prince of Light, who might permanently consign a person and all they know to oblivion, the Thief of Light doesn’t destroy information but simply deprives a particular person of access to it. Indeed, a particularly adept Thief of Light might be able to assume direct control of the perceptions of someone whose Light they stole in this manner, gaining access to their direct experiences, if not their subjective memories thereof.
All the Luck (All of It): The Thief is unnaturally fortunate to a very high decree; but this fortune inevitably comes at the cost of misfortune for either the Thief’s future self, or those who travel with the Thief. Pre-Ascension, the Thief may not be aware of this ability, and therefore may inadvertently sabotage their team (or perhaps they are aware and use it nonetheless). However, if the Thief takes care of how and when they’re applying their vast surplus of luck, they can draw on their enemies’ Light rather than that of their allies, and prove themselves Heroic rather than Just.
Steal the Spotlight: The Thief would hate nothing more than to be forgotten, irrelevant, or overshadowed by another. With this ability, the Thief forces the narrative to pay attention to them, either deliberately or inadvertently weaving a complex web of Luck and Knowledge to draw events ever closer to their return to the forefront of the story. Such a return is not permanent, and may well end with a Final Death (Heroic or Just) for the Thief, but for many Thieves (of Light and otherwise), a last chance to make a meaningful move, to draw the gaze of the players and the audience alike, is worth just about any sacrifice.
Personality: The Thief of Light is bound to be dynamic, dangerous, and more than a little dramatic, attracted almost magnetically to the poles of heroism and villainy. They’re paradoxically both selfish and well-intentioned, torn between two equally strong desires: preventing others from suffering what they’ve suffered, and regaining their own lost Light (and then some). While Light is the Aspect of knowledge, I somehow doubt that a Thief of Light would be particularly scholarly; given how active the Thief Class is, I’d expect our Thief of Light to have a more hands-on approach to acquiring knowledge. Perhaps they’re explorers, illuminating new ground and staying one step ahead of their enemies, or maybe hackers, or thieves of letters or books. There are plenty of options here. In their personal relationships, the Thief is rather likely to suffer from a reputation for treachery or egotism, and it will take some effort to prove themselves trustworthy. Nonetheless, they aren’t manipulative for its own sake – their motivations, however misguided, do contain a grain of magnanimity. Whether that grain will grow to become a pearl of uhhh, (A/N: rapidly losin control of this metaphor D::::) uhm, before the Thief’s ambitions destroy them, will be the question looming over the Thief’s life and journey.

FEAR & HUNGER LORE TALK: THE OLD GODS OF HUMANITY
So out of inspiration to write about Fear & Hunger, I wrote the lore of the Old Gods, going by all that I could gather from the game, the wiki, and (DISCLAIMER) personal thoughts, speculation and theories. The concept of the Old Gods in this game fascinated me a lot, so I wanted to write in detail how I think about them, and what they can exactly represent compared to our real world history and mythologies. 
God of the Depths... 
The God of the Depths is an old god, maybe the oldest. Unlike the other gods, he is not a concept made into a being by collective thought, nor an ascended mortal, but an entity which hearts still beat to this day, and whose essence flows beneath the earth at the darkest and most unreachable depths. It might represent the Earth itself. Present before any other being. It is worshipped by insects, and is associated with all sorts of creatures form the natural world. His form is one that resembles a colossal plant root, with a gaping mouth that makes a wooden creaking noise when it breathes. You need to travel through its own entrails to find it. The God of the Depths has no normal followers. It is mostly worshiped by those who are forsaken and forgotten. The creatures who shy away from the dark, and prefer the comfort that provides the darker corners of the earth, outcasted from the rest. A race of primitive Cavedwellers worship it strongly, for example. The God of the Depths is responsible for the layouts of the infamous and eldritch dungeons of Fear & Hunger, changing the shape of its labyrinthine passages in order to challenge trespassers. 
Gro-Goroth, God of Human Sacrifice.
Generations, eras and ages of human violence, sacrifice and blood spilling created this eldritch entity whose real forms could shatter the mind of a person by just peeking at it for a moment. Gro-Goroth took the shape of that to which blood sacrifices are made. He wears the skin and bodies of other creatures to hide his fear and imperfections. It provides some form of relief. He is a curious god, more than any of the rest, and despite abandoning humanity, he might still walk the earth among humans, wearing the bodies and skin of men and women alike, or among massive piles of corpses. Despite his efforts, his presence and influence is fading. He is also the father of blood magic, and all sorts of destructive powers. Granting terrible power to those that succumb to the dark desires for violence. His followers tend to be bright but viciously mad mages and wizards, who train themselves in the use of said destructive powers and blood magic, making them fearsome living threats. It's easy to go mad in the dark world that is blood sorcery, getting drunk on power and becoming bloodthirsty witch slaves to the Old God. 
Sylvian, Goddess of Love. 
Love, Lust, Fertility and Sex, to be precise. While Gro-Goroth represents Destruction, Sylvian represents Life and Love. Her own vision of life and love, that is. She is the creator of humanity, made at the dawn of time, to her image, and taught them the secrets of her power, including reproduction, and even things beyond nature, like Flower Magic. The best way to get her favor is by performing a True Act of Love in her honor, in which you merge with your partner in passionate carnal mating... Literally. During the process, the lover's bodies mold into a fleshy blob, until regaining shape as a new being, composed of the two. A holy Marriage. You are blessed with more vitality and life, your deformed and grotesque state. Secrets of Flower Magic also teach how to create life, like healing wounds and pain with Loving Whispers. Enchant others with Pheromones and even manipulating life through the most horrible of means, like impregnating corpses with Demon Seed, to give birth to a Demon Child of your own blood. The benefits of the holy fusion of Marriage is weird to take in at first. Why would someone go through such horrifying deformation process? Well, given the teachings of Sylvian, it's all about vitality and life manipulation. Could be said that a marriage, a body made of two lovers into a single being is blessed with an extended life, and extended vitality, despite their disgusting shape. Similar to Gro-Goroth's cult, one can lost themselves in the acts of praise to Sylvian, which involve massive and passionate love making that can refilled your self with life and heal any wound but with the risk of losing one's sanity and sense of control. Also, the need to shape and control new life can bring horrible consequences, such is the abominable existence of the Demon Child, who lives only for violence. 
All-Merr, The False God.
Last of the older gods, was born in Jettaiah, raised by a virgin mother and supposedly sired by a "False God". He gathered his 12 apostles to bring back the old world order. Corrupt kings and sultans captured Alll-mer and hung him from the cross, where he ascended into the city of the Gods, Ma'habre. He returned back to his weeping 11 apostles and tried to save mankind with his strength by murdering the Kings and Sultans, bringing back the old world order. Year 0 marks the birth of his new self. 
His symbol is the cross. All-Merr's holy body now resides somewhere deep within the ancient city, perfectly preserved. Maybe some necromantic tricks could spark some new life into the ancient being? Well, despite his tragic existence on earth, and the rejection of his cult at first, he is the one among the Older Gods to have the strongest and most numerous following, and still be remembered to the present day.
And lastly, the one above all...
The Trickster Moon God.
One who still observes mankind to this day, while the rest of his kind lost a lot of their influence and abandoned humanity long ago. He is of a jealous kind, and believes humans should not share the same rights as gods, nor achieve godhood, which is why he despises the New Order of the New Gods, who replace each other every certain age, ascending one after the other, as if it where a mere insignificant title. He has many plots to diminish their influence and ruin their plans for transcendence, and operates with very few but very efficient agents on earth who worship it. Like a particularly well dress and spoken merchant with a cat mask, known as Pocketcat, with a peculiar interest in acquiring children in exchange of exotic goods. Pocketcat is a minor influence in the world compared to the Mages of Gro-Goroth, Sylvian’s marriages and sex cults, or All-Merrs enormous following, but he is quite unique in that he is a creature spawned by his older god sent to do his bidding, rather than an adherent. Another creature in service of the Moon God is the Lady of Moon, an ethereal being with the shape of a spectral jellyfish, and many serene human faces, who roams all around the world. Her power and intentions are kept to herself, but she seems like an immensely intelligent being, and quite polite, open to telepathic communication with other creatures, even if so briefly. The plots of the Moon God are... Always unknown. Everything surrounding this deity and his following is incomprehensible and enigmatic even to the New Gods. A theory of why the agent Pocketcat gathers children is that children in this world hold a great power that can be used through sacrificial rituals. So buying children is a way of subverting the power of other gods by keeping them from being used for other religious purposes.

Rogue One or Why I (Probably) Won’t Watch This Movie Ever Again
It’s not as if I disliked “Rogue One”. I found it excellently made, from the political, philosophic, psychological point of view as well as with regard to settings, action scenes, acting, music, effects etc.
But why didn’t anyone tell me how deeply sad this story is?
“Rogue One” tells the story of a group of persons who all, for different reasons, have nothing left to lose and thus sacrifice their lives to help the Rebellion against Palpatine’s Empire. There is no reason for us viewers to get attached to the members of this crazy suicide mission: it is their destiny to die and we can sense that right from the beginning. Personally, I never felt compelled to root for them, I only felt terribly sorry for them.
It sure is interesting to be confronted with the reality that so many heroes gave an important contribution to the end of the war but never got anything good from it; also, how bleak and dangerous their lives in this totalitarian Empire were, constantly on the run, always oppressed, losing another piece of themselves over and over - family, health, mental sanity, safety, integrity, in the end life.
The only character I could feel with a little was Cassian, who stayed by Jyn’s side to the bitter end so she wouldn’t have to die alone. Jyn on the other hand never requited his feelings; her entire being was set on doing her father’s will, and Cassian, like everybody or everything else, was just a meaning to this end for her. (Though, in all honesty, she never compelled or manipulated anyone.) She may have been meant as a strong female character, but I didn’t find her in the least compelling or admirable. Jyn did what she had to do because she did not know what else to do with her life.
Jyn’s fate is a somewhat sarcastic take on the bond between child and father emphasizing that a father may give his child’s life direction and purpose but that this must not necessarily make him (or her, in this case) happy.

What baffled me most, in retrospect, was the reaction coming from most Star Wars fans. Long before I had watched the film, I had heard respectively only read of enthusiastic responses, usually culminating in “A real Star Wars film again, at last!”
Of course setting and design remind very much of “A New Hope”, because the story is set shortly before; and for brief periods we see the Death Star, Governor Tarkin, Leia and Darth Vader.
So then, this is what fans want, this is allegedly “real Star Wars”? Excuse me, depressing? Not the aesthetics and the message of the Prequels, the energy and drive of the classics or the new impulses and hopeful glimpses of the Sequels? Does it only depend on cosmetics whether a film is defined “real Star Wars” or not?
This whole story is a tragedy. It’s not a call to adventure with a happy ending like “A New Hope” or “The Phantom Menace”, a Greek-style drama like “Return of the Sith” or anything of the sort. It’s supposed to bring home that there is nothing wonderful about war and that everyone involved will lose much more than they win. This also fits to one of the Sequels’ themes, when we meet the old heroes again; they had won a war and founded a family - but before that, Luke and Leia had lost their old families, Luke had to give up his dream of becoming a pilot, and all of them suffered through tremendous physical and psychical horrors. And, as we learn, after a period of peace they had to watch their victory go up in smoke again as the embodiment of their hopes, their son and heir, nephew and pupil, turned his back on them and devoted himself to becoming evil like his grandfather, the very person they had fought against respectively tried to rescue and redeem all of these years before.
Yes, in a way “Rogue One” is “real Star Wars”. There is a person with father issues at the center, it’s an authentic, honest story, the characters are well-developed and the narrative is well thought out. But I was left almost in tears thinking how the hope Leia expressed in the last scene was founded on the absolute lack of hope of the protagonists of the crazy Death Star mission. I felt depressed for two days after.
Even “Revenge of the Sith” doesn’t make me feel that bad when I watch it, though the outcome is so terrible. There is Padmés funeral scene that leaves the viewer space to mourn, and the scenes with the twins and their surrogate families announcing that not all is lost. “Rogue One” just makes a quick cut when all is said and done and that’s it.
No one will ever think about these persons ever again, no one will mourn them, no one will be grateful to them or call them heroes. A brutally honest take on war and rebellion, opposite to the end of “A New Hope” where the heroes are celebrated and seen as such, though they are responsible for the death of everybody who lived on the Death Star. (Not that I’m blaming them, in that situation it was either destroy them or be destroyed.)
Luke Skywalker, hero of the first classic film which directly follows after this one, never knew his parents, lost his foster parents and his mentor during the course of a few days, but he joined the Rebellion and thrived on it. For Jyn, the loss of her family is a dead weight which hangs on her shoulders until it leads to her death. Jyn merely survives, making one heavy step after the other; she never rebels and goes her own way like Luke did.
I was also surprised since I had heard that Jyn was supposed to be a strong-willed woman, designed to be a role model to female spectators. I wouldn’t want any girl to choose Jyn as a personal example to go by: she is a cold, cynical person whose life never knows fulfilment, not a symbol of hope but of relinquishing of life, hope, happiness.
Her characterization is particularly bitter when we compare her to Han Solo, to whom Star War’s second spin-off was dedicated two years later. Though Han has a sarcastic streak, he remains generous and humorous, and he always cares and is cared about by someone. Despite his name, he is never really alone: he bonds with Qi’Ra, Chewbacca, Lando and Enfys Nest, while Jyn never is close to anyone. (Is it a coincidence that the names “Han” and “Jyn” are so alike, I wonder?)
Also contrarily to Jyn, Han turns his back on his father figure Beckett, deciding to go his own way. And in both cases, this attitude is not heroic in the conventional sense, but personal; Jyn does her father’s will because she feels committed to him, not to some greater cause. Han, too, rejects Beckett when he feels personally betrayed and let down by him. No wonder Han, as we get to know him in the classic films, is the most independent and worldly-wise of the characters. He initially had no father figure, then he found one but in the end, he chose to do without him. And I don’t think it’s a coincidence, when Han kills Beckett in self-defense, that his last words are “You made a wise choice”.
The difference between Han and Jyn, or also Luke, Anakin and Rey, to name other Star Wars heroes, is that he doesn’t have a father figure but he also doesn’t look out for one. He gladly befriends Beckett who is more experienced than he, but when he finds he can’t trust him he turns his back on him, with regret but not mourning him for long.

Han never knew where he came from, but with that also came the freedom to make his own choices; and as we know, contrarily to Jyn he still had a long and fulfilling life and found real friends, a home and a purpose. Very fittingly, “Solo - a Star Wars Story” is a feelgood film and not in the least depressing.
In both cases, we have a very realistic and not at all starry-eyed outlook on what “heroism” and “fighting for a just cause” means. Star Wars remains true to itself by hammering home all over again that it is not at all gratifying to be a lonely hero, and that on the other hand having a family may be a good thing, but being defined by them is a crushing burden. Picking up that burden and doing what you believe you have to do in order to feel connected to them may lead to the desired end, but then the question arises whether that end is really so desirable if the cost is so high. Again, Star Wars is not about the good guys blowing up the bad guys, but about growing up.
Luke Skywalker never knew about his family for a very long time, and after he had learned about it his father died, leaving it to him to repair the damage Vader had caused together with Palpatine; and as we see him again in “The Last Jedi” his character shows a bitter parallel to Jyn - lonely and disillusioned. This also follows the line of the Prequels: even if you have the best intentions you may still err, and deciding to give your life to what you perceive as a higher cause may literally become your, not exactly happy, fate. Becoming a Jedi master Luke became emotionally detached, which brought to the downfall of his temple; only when he communicated with someone again - Rey, Yoda, Leia, and also with his nephew a little - his existence gained new purpose.
In his last moments, Luke announces that he will still be there as a Force spirit; and after death he is remembered by many people in the galaxy, whether they knew him personally or not.
Jyn and Cassian die in the blaze of the Death Star fire, giving up what little they still had or were; Luke’s death is illuminated by the light of the twin suns which this time rise instead of setting. He loved and was loved, that is why he will never be truly gone. Jyn, Cassian and the other members of the Rogue One mission are forgotten, despite the invaluable service they did to the galaxy at large. This is what “Rogue One” ultimately is about: complete, utter and inescapable loneliness.
So, thank you for the food for thought, “Rogue One”. But I don’t think I will watch you ever again.
