Book Review - Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine
I finally finished a book this year, yayy! Well, it technically started off as an audiobook when I was driving but it was engrossing. I was able to pay attention to traffic and also keep track of the plot. I did get impatient and skimmed through the last pages of the book because I wanted to find out how it ended. It's a decent book overall.
I could relate so much to Eleanor OIiphant in all her social awkwardness, obsession with celebrities we barely knew (though this was when I was a teenager). We did grow out of it in a similar, kind-of heartbreaking way. The thing I related to her the most was her loneliness. "There have been times where I felt that I might die of loneliness.”
I remember writing in my journal long ago: "Indifference will be the death of me"
Eleanor and I pride ourselves in our ability to take care of ourselves without depending on someone else. We also hate tardiness. “I find lateness exceptionally rude; it’s so disrespectful, implying unambiguously that you consider yourself and your own time to be so much more valuable than the other person’s.”, she says.
She talks about the ridiculousness of social conventions and she has a point: “If someone asks you how you are, you are meant to say FINE. You are not meant to say that you cried yourself to sleep last night because you hadn’t spoken to another person for two consecutive days. FINE is what you say.”
“These days, loneliness is the new cancer—a shameful, embarrassing thing, brought upon yourself in some obscure way. A fearful, incurable thing, so horrifying that you dare not mention it; other people don’t want to hear the word spoken aloud for fear that they might too be afflicted, or that it might tempt fate into visiting a similar horror upon them."
She also goes through phases of frustration of not knowing how to figure out herself. In the end, she realizes that she doesn't need someone else to fix her but that it's nice when someone kind wants to sit with you when you figure it out yourself. And she says it best -
"In the end, I survived"
My favorite thing about this book is that the author did not use the highly overused trope of "Love is the answer". Well, I mean love in the romantic sense. Eleanor eventually survives because of a friend - platonic love. I think it's wholesome.
TL DR:
Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ out of 5 Review: Light, easy, and wholesome read. Very funny, poignant at times and very honest. Took off a star because I don't have a favorite part that makes me want to go back and reread it again.

redheads piss me off so much when they claim they're oppressed because of casting choices for comic book/animated/book characters. like, only 2% of the world's population has red hair, and most of those people are irish or scottish. and most of those people don't have BRIGHT red hair like the characters in comic books or disney princesses do. for most redheaded roles, actors dye their hair, and redheads don't seem to have any issue with that as long as it's a white person.
no one has a problem when julia roberts, emma stone, blake lively, rachel mcadams, amy adams, etc. dye their hair red. and, in fact, I've seen people fancast some of these people for redhead roles that they're angry about people of colour getting.
it's only an issue when they cast a person of colour, even if they dye their hair for the role. like, I'm sorry, but NO ONE looks like starfire irl!! no one has orange skin and bright red firy hair!! if they'd cast some white actress and dyed her hair, everyone would have been FINE with it, but because they cast a gorgeous dark-skinned black woman, the redheads are convinced they're being erased from media.
savannah welch, who played babs on both gotham and titans, isn't a natural redhead, but I genuinely didn't see anyone angry about her dying her hair for the role (and I'm glad I didn't, since disabled actresses need more work and I'm so glad we got a disabled actress playing babs!) but no one has that same energy for leslie grace, just because she's latina.
sorry for ranting, I just felt so tired seeing the backlash against leslie grace which just feels like the exact same backlash we've seen over and over again against halle bailey (ariel), zendaya (mj), candice patton (iris west), mehcad brooks (jimmy olsen), quvenzhane wallis (annie), anna diop (starfire) and many others. like, just say you're racist and go...
don’t apologize! you’re totally right and i 100% agree with you. im a white natural redhead myself and it’s incredibly frustrating to see others do this bc its blatantly racist. we are not oppressed and we don’t need representation for our hair color LOL it’s absurd. like there’s no gingerphobia and like you said all those actresses dye their hair and even become known as redheads despite it not being natural but these people have zero problem with that. it only ever comes up with a redheaded character gets cast as a poc.

A Character Study of Cadence Nash
Tumblr media
Cadence Nash, at the start of the series, is a 24-year-old fire-metahuman who is tasked by the Assassination Bureau to not only kill Barry Allen, but use his connections with STAR Labs to get information on Harrison Wells and the Particle Accelerator explosion.
Cadence is on the shorter side, at five feet, four inches. She was originally an even five feet tall, her short stature due to her gymnastics and cheerleading background, but I changed it to her being taller simply because of how visually (though mentally, since we can’t actually watch fics, lol) hard it would be to have certain things happen later down the line. She has long, dark brown hair that she either straightens or leaves wavy, depending on her mood. She has hazel eyes that tend to look bluer or greener depending on the lighting. She has a thinner, athletic body due to her background in sports, and has a scar on her left cheek that becomes more noticeable when she’s smiling, often off-setting her outgoing personality with a hint of mystery.
She was born in Metropolis, Kansas to her parents Kent and Maya Nash, who came into their wealth from their advertising company. Cadence grew up as a spoiled, only child who was granted anything she asked for. In return, she had to keep up the appearance of being the ‘perfect family’ in the public eye of the socialites with the likes of the Luthers in Metropolis, and the Queens in then Starling City. As she grew older, Cadence easily balanced the life of being the ‘perfect daughter’ who didn’t talk back and did as was asked and the ‘perfect student’ who aced all her classes, was co-captain of the cheerleading team, a social butterfly, and the most popular girl in school along with what her parents didn’t see; that she regularly drank and partied, and skipped class with her friends and boyfriend (though she was careful not to get drunk unless knowing she wouldn’t get caught). However, it wasn’t the biggest secret she held; she was a fire metahuman—a Firestarter—and had been since she was eight-years-old. Keeping so many secrets made it easy for her to juggle the different parts of her life with ease, though it slowly started to eat away at her.
She met and started to date Ryder Moseley after he moved to Metropolis from Savannah, Georgia. The two fall in love and ultimately fall pregnant when Cadence is 16. They keep it a secret from everyone until she starts to show, which results in her alienation from her peers and being kicked out of school until she gives birth. Ryder steps up and wants to be there for the baby, but his parents, out of embarrassment, send him to Coast City in California. On her own, Cadence decides to name the baby boy Braden Michael Nash—Braden after her name, Cadence, and Michael as Ryder’s middle name is Michael, and raise it on her own. Her parents are hot and cold about her pregnancy; extremely upset at first, but then adore the baby when it arrives. However, it isn’t long until Kent determines that Cadence needs to move out, leaving her baby behind to ensure he gets the proper care while she makes a life for herself, but Cadence refuses, takes her baby, and moves out on her own, cutting off all ties with her family.
She eventually finds her way to Central City where she slowly starts off her life in homeless shelters while caring for her baby, and making her way through school until she receives her degree and goes through residency until the fateful day she runs into Barry Allen in the waiting room of the office she was doing residency in.
However, it’s not until later that she (and readers) realize that all isn’t as it seems.
Cadence is a very outgoing girl, to the point that it’s no surprise to anyone she used to be a cheerleader. She loves to have fun and will do anything for a laugh, even harmlessly tease those closest to her. To that extent, she is blunt and likes to potentially embarrass others though her mild teasing. On the other hand, due to her past and being a teen mom, she can be very serious in contrast to others who are her age. She is dedicated, loyal, and courageous, all seen as she decided to take the risk and take her baby with her as she moved from her home with nothing but the clothes on her back. However, on the negative side, she can be closed-minded, ruthless, and dishonest. Her greatest fears are losing loved ones and being hated while the things she wants most out of life is respect and love from those around her. She is deathly afraid of insects.
Cadence’s parents are Kent and Maya Nash; as much as she loves them, she also hates them for having kicking her out of her house after becoming pregnant and giving birth. Over the course of the series, their relationship strengthens though Cadence does continue to make comments that her parents are ‘insane’. Kent is a strong corporate man who will stop at nothing to crush his opponents, however he is very loving to his daughter and grandson. Cadence was so much a daddy’s girl that he was intensely disappointed when she became pregnant (it is this disappointment and his growing brain tumor, unknown to Cadence, that causes him to push his only daughter away). Maya, on the other hand, is a woman who loves her socialite life and tends to come across as naïve due to her view of the extravagance the world has to offer her.
It is later reveled that Kent and Maya are Cadence’s adoptive parents while her birth parents are Harrison Wells and Tess Morgan, of whom Cadence knew to be her parents’ best friends. Kent and Maya suffered numerous miscarriages before being told they couldn’t have children due to the danger that is posed on Maya’s life. Harrison and Tess are pregnant, but find that they don’t have space for children in their lives and decide to allow their best friends to adopt their baby girl (who they named Cadence due to their love of classical music) so long as she doesn’t know they’re her parents. A tough decision that Harrison and Tess struggle with over the years. Cadence doesn’t have a relationship with Harrison and Tess until after the revelation of Tess being alive and her true parentage. She is angry at both sets of her parents for a while until deciding to allow them all into hers and her sons’ lives.
Her relationship with Team Flash are her biggest relationships throughout the story. Originally, she doesn’t tell Team Flash that she’s Brady’s mother, but when she does, they receive the news with respect and understanding (until Barry is whammied, anyway).
Barry Allen is her target within the Assassination Bureau, a mercenary group who is hired by others to kill their targets. She’d killed numerous targets before meeting Barry, finding herself at odds with being able to kill him as they grow closer, sharing their experiences of being a metahuman, not knowing many others. It isn’t until the Assassination Bureau go in to capture Barry that she finds out they used her and brainwashed her to get to him. Barry is angry with her at first, thinking she’s betrayed him, but Cadence manages to earn their trust when fighting back against the group. They were real close friends since their meeting before falling in love and ultimately ending up engaged by season 3 and married in season 4.  She and Barry are partners in every sense of the word, they complete each other within their own shortcomings and their powers work together offensively in attacks and defensively to “recharge” each other.
Cisco Ramon is Cadence’s ride or die buddy, they both love to have fun and considering themselves the more entertaining duo of STAR Labs. They don’t have much of a relationship at first; he makes her suit for her after Harrison’s insistence, and they bicker over her superhero name, but their relationship doesn’t grow much further until the break between seasons 3 and 4 where they’re the more senior members of Team Flash.
Caitlin Snow is Cadence’s best friend, encompassing fire and ice. Cadence holds the fire and Caitlin the ice, both complimenting and contrasting each other. It doesn’t hurt that as much as Cadence likes Barry, she also likes Caitlin. Being the only girls in STAR Labs and with a shared medical background, they quickly fall in with each other and become best friends; often quickly defending each other and supporting each other when needed.
Joe and Iris West are the ones of Team Flash that Cadence are the least close to, to the point that Cadence hardly interacts with them. Cadence only knows Iris as the woman Barry loves, until Barry gets over her, and Joe as one of her co-workers at the CCPD. That relationship continues to develop at that slow place throughout the series, with only Barry as the anchor between them. However, there are times where Iris and Cadence will team up when trying to figure out journalistic mysteries and to tease Barry. Their relationship, due to Barry, becomes strained in season 4 when Iris is excited for Cadence to join the West Family, and Cadence coldly telling her that they aren’t and won’t be family as Barry isn’t a West and Cadence and Brady will never be Wests either. It is hinted that Iris loves Barry as well, and despite Barry never telling Iris he loved her and fell out of love with her, that Cadence knows it and is uncomfortable due to it.
Cadence’s past with the Assassination Bureau follows her through the first four stories (which was originally going to be the first three seasons/one fic per season, before I split Flash Fire and Crossfire in half)/her first arc through the series. She struggles with knowing she worked with them for the money to give a better life to her son, and leaving the past completely behind her. Breathtaker and his followers, Stratos, Mindboggler, Incognito and Brigade (Cadence) are very much like the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. All until Cadence finally breaks through the darkness within her because of the Assassination Bureau, engages her full potential through the Fire Fall, and finally kills Breathtaker.
Starting in season 4, Cadence deals with the consequences of her action within the Assassination Bureau as well as coming into her own as a hero.
Cadence’s superhero name is Flare, though she’s also been known to go by Flash Fire at the very beginning of the series.

The end of the French César 1782 by  François Aimé Louis Dumoulin 1804
César was a 74-gun ship built according to the standards defined by French shipbuilders in the 1740s. The design aimed to combine good manoeuvrability and armament cost effectively, so as to counter British warships.
At the time of the French entry to the American War of Independence, César was under the command of Captain Joseph de Raimondis d'Allons. On 13 April 1778, César sailed from Toulon bound for America, with the 12 ships of the Comte d'Estaing's fleet. The fleet arrived at the mouth of the Delaware River, north of Baltimore, on 8 July and pursued several enemy ships. On 8 August, it forced the straits at New York and entered the mouth of the Connecticut River, where the British forces were anchored. The British burnt seven of their ships and their stores. On 11 August 1778, the César was separated from the squadron by a violent storm at the time when they were about to engage in a battle with the forces of Richard Howe. On 16 August 1778, César battled HMS Iris and then went to shelter in Boston, where she was joined by the other French ships.
In December 1778, after d'Estaing's squadron had transferred to the West Indies, the César took part in the French defeat at the Battle of St. Lucia. On 6 July 1779 César was part of the rear squadron in the hard-fought battle of Grenada against the forces of John Byron. After Estaing's failure to support the Siege of Savannah in October 1779, the César returned to France with the other ships that had arrived on America in 1778 in order to be refitted and to recruit new crew. In 1781, the César left for the West Indies under the command of Charles Régis de Coriolis d'Espinouse in the fleet of the Comte de Grasse. On 28 April she was present at the Battle of Fort Royal, attempting to raise the blockade of Martinique. On 24 May César was part of the squadron which covered the French Invasion of Tobago. On 5 September 1781 César was present at the decisive battle of the Chesapeake, which completed the encirclement of the British forces at Yorktown.
In 1782, still with De Grasse's fleet, César sailed to the West Indies and in January took part in the Battle of Saint Kitts. César was then at the Battle of the Saintes on 12 April 1782, during which she was totally dismasted and then captured by HMS Centaur. In the night after the battle, a fire broke out in the magazine, causing it to explode. The César was destroyed, killing 400 French sailors and 50 British members of the prize crew. The César was one of the twenty ships lost by the French Navy during the American War of Independence.

Musings - Life in 30's
I am in my early thirties - which as a millennial means that I just started feeling like an adult. I don't know if it's me, or if I am being influenced by people around me, but I am at a place in my life where I want stability. The main difference I noticed about myself in my 20's vs now is the need for excitement. I don't crave for excitement anymore. Excitement is good, but too much of a good thing, you see. Now? Nothing would make me happier than coming back to a cozy home at the end of the day, snuggling with my dog and mindlessly watching TV as I try to edit photos. 20s-me was still trying to find her place in this world. 30s-me thinks she has already found it. Not a geographical place, but a state of mind. 30s-me craves stability, appreciates routine, and is very mindful of what/who she gives her energy to.
Don't get me wrong. I loved my 20's but do I love them enough to want to relive them? Only if I can keep the wisdom I have right now 😂. What wisdom, you ask? Off the top of my head, not to ignore my gut instinct - something that I still have to remember to remember; next, as my therapist put it "don't put yourself on fire to keep someone you love feel warm". Metaphorically speaking, of course. I will be honest - the hairs on the back of my neck stood up when she said that to me. I may write more about therapy in another post.
I don't truly know if I should thank the pandemic or my dog for this paradigm shift. Maybe I should thank the pandemic for giving me an opportunity to slow down and spend some time introspecting, and of course for letting me spend time with my dog. My dog has helped me so much more than I could ever put into words. I've had her since she was a baby. I've seen her grow up but honestly, we raised each other. She taught me how to be responsible for another being's survival. And I've taught her - you know - toilet training and stuff :p . We talk to each other. But more importantly, we understand each other. She smiles when I ask her if she's a good girl. And she lets me know when she wants attention. People tell me that she is a lot like me. Maybe she's absorbed some of my personality. Like how she needs her space. She's most comfortable at home where she is allowed on the furniture. In fact, we sit on the couch and watch tv. She has a big goofy grin on her face a lot and I keep discussing tv with her.
I digress. My point is, she is without a doubt the most healthiest form of love in my life. She reminded me that love includes a lot of making mistakes and forgiveness, and to never take the little things in life for granted - like cuddles. Perhaps how we love indicates how we wish we were loved and she has set a standard for how I want to be loved. I've loved people way less deserving and it was heartbreaking. But my dog would never do that, at least not intentionally. She loves me for who I am even if she doesn't know what that is. She will never be unkind to me via words or actions. Ever since I got her, my heart has been exploding with so much love for her and it changed me. For the better I hope.
The biggest highlight of my 30s is that I found the love of my life and it's my dog <3

We Asked 15 Brewers: What Are You Drinking in Dry January?
Tumblr media
It might still feel like 2020 in some ways — OK, a lot of ways — but 2021 has indeed arrived, and for many people the dawn of a new year means setting resolutions for a cleaner, healthier life. The most temperate (and trendy) goal is Dry January, the widely popular month-long practice of abstaining from alcohol.
There’s a good chance someone you know (it could even be you) is pledging sobriety for the first 31 days of 2021. According to the London-based nonprofit that started the now-global challenge through a campaign to combat unhealthy drinking in 2013, more than 6 million people said they would become teetotalers this month, up from 3.9 million last year. The dramatic increase is not at all surprising, as data suggests alcohol consumption has risen sharply during the coronavirus pandemic.
Interestingly, the burgeoning segment of nonalcoholic beverages also continues to thrive amid today’s duress and uncertainty. In the first six months of the pandemic, sales of non-alcoholic beer increased by almost 40 percent, according to Nielsen, pointing to the legitimacy in the growing momentum of the sober-curious movement.
Depending on who you ask, having a Dry January this year could be extremely difficult, pretty easy, or somewhere between. Whatever you’re doing, we’re not here to judge. But we wondered: Are brewers participating? Here’s what we learned after asking 15.
Keep reading for details about all the recommended drinks!
“I definitely cut back after the holidays, and totally support Dry January, if it’s truly healthy for the person doing it. Me, I’m mostly alternating between low fills of our IPA and pils on the weekend. And for weeknight dinners I’m having an ice-cold Heineken 0.0, straight from the bottle. It is, by far, the most beer-like nonalcoholic beer I’ve tried, and it’s exactly what I want in the occasion: crisp, cold lager.” —Kyle Kohlmorgen, Founder and Head Brewer, Wellspent Brewing Company, St. Louis
“Scottish Blend tea. I’m not joking.” —Keir Hamilton, Brewer, Alewife Brewing Company, Sunnyside, N.Y.
“Local businesses, from breweries and bottle shops to bars and restaurants, are struggling right now, so I’m supporting them anyway I can. In lieu of Dry January I’ll be continuing to purchase beer from some of my favorite small businesses and I encourage everyone else to do the same. I’ll be saving the sobriety for more stable times and drinking saisons like Väsen’s Mierka until then.” —Brian Mandeville, Head Brewer, Fine Creek Brewing Company, Powhatan, Va.
”I have to be honest: I’m usually the first to tell trend-followers to get bent. But considering last year made me want to dive into a pool of strong Mai Tai, I decided to give Dry January a Mai-try. As with any vice, you give one and grab another. So I started drinking the glorious solution of my people, imported Mexican Coke. Why? Because it’s tasty as hell.“ —Javi Gonzalez, Brewer, Pacific Plate Brewing Company, Monrovia, Calif.
“I was planning on doing it, actually for the first time, and then an insurrection mounted against the Capitol and I realized it just wasn’t the right time for that.” —Candace Holmes, Brewer, Bearded Iris Brewing, Nashville
“My wife and I are both doing it, partly because she tested positive for Covid on Saturday and I a few days later, after first showing negative. Crazy. So we’ve been quarantining with a lot of La Croix.“ —Todd DiMatteo, Co-owner and Brewer, Good Word Brewing & Public House, Duluth, Ga.
“I’ve been drinking lots of water and coffee this month. We’ve also been experimenting with dry-hopping nonalcoholic seltzers with and without fruit purees, so I’m fortunate to enjoy those during and after my shifts.” —Eric Berg, Packaging, The Bronx Brewery, Bronx, N.Y.
“I really appreciate Dry January and any attempt to be a bit more mindful about sobriety and what we consume. This year obviously is a bit different, but in the past it’s been cool to see people drinking nonalcoholic options in social settings, proving even us awkward introverts don’t always need to be half buzzed to have a good time out. At the brewery we’ve been experimenting with these awesome little drinks we call Soft Seltzers. They’re fermented with a mixed culture we’ve cultivated, less than 0.5 percent ABV, bone dry, have some cool funky and refreshing herb and fruit flavors, and that seltzer-like carb and drinkability. I find most kombuchas and other fermented sodas either too sweet or too aggressively sour and gross. The Soft Seltzers are much more ethereal and delicious. Lately I’ve been crushing bottles of one with ginger and holy basil out of some clear bottles that, after a bit of time in the sun, gets a saison-ish, funky skunk character. They make me so happy.” —Gerard Olson, Owner, Forest & Main Brewing Company, Ambler, Pa.
“Whiskey and Diet Coke. I’m doing a beer-only Dry January because your boy gained that Covid-30 (pounds, that is) and it’s time to see my toes again.” —Tyler Smith, Founder, Kitsune Brewing Company, Phoenix,
“Despite brewing beer for a living, I don’t drink much, so the idea of participating in Dry January never even occurs to me.” —Jacob Mitchell, Head Brewer, Craft Brewing Company, Lake Elsinore, Calif.
“Local breweries need all the help they can get this winter, so I won’t go dry and instead wiIl pick up beers from our friends in our Gowanus neighborhood. For one, pretty excited to grab Antithesis, Wild East’s new West Coast-style IPA.” —Alex Biedermann, Brewer, Strong Rope Brewery, Brooklyn
“With all that’s gone on this past year, Dry January isn’t really in the cards for me. At work, my coworkers and I basically drink whatever lager is close to finished at the time. As soon as that’s packaged, we move on to the next one, and so on and so forth. I think it probably has something to do with the exclusivity of it. And maybe the convenience. Anyway, it feels like our little secret. And when I get home I’m usually drinking gin or Scotch. The weekends I save for a special bottle of whatever mixed-fermentation ale I can get my hands on.” —Savannah Roberts, Brewer, Triple Crossing Beer (Fulton), Richmond, Va.
“Lagunitas’ Hop Water is actually pretty fantastic. But these days it’s a shit-ton of seltzer, pretty much. Maybe mix in some lime and bitters if I’m feeling fancy.” —Bob Oso, Brewer, Austin Beerworks, Austin, Texas
“I think a major problem I, and maybe others, have is that I associate beer with fun and good feelings. And so I start to reach for a beer because of the way I’m hoping it makes me feel versus just enjoying the way it tastes. This month, I’ve been getting into trying different hot teas and creating a cozy, enjoyable atmosphere to retrain my brain into realizing I don’t need alcohol to have a good time.” —Jillian Farrell, Brewer, Grand Canyon Brewing + Distillery, Flagstaff, Ariz.
“With a lot of breweries struggling from the pandemic, I’ll have some beers this month. It’s to support the local industry via buying and drinking beers from my peers, and because I enjoy drinking some every now and then. Maybe I’ll just do a double-DRY-hopped January, instead.” —Linus De Paoli, Owner and Brewer, Kitzingen Brewery, Wyoming, Mich.
