Summary thoughts: this was really good and I like that MW has taken the time to address the NE fallout before moving on to whatever is coming next, I'm mostly just excited for that whatever-comes-next now. I didn't expect this story to still be focused on the same planet, but it's cool that it was! And now we're moving on with more machine intelligences and rogue secunits in play!! And they mentioned the comfortunit from artificial condition so hopefully that'll come back into play soon as well! I feel like something is building up wrt construct rights in the setting and I'm very excited to see that, but in the meantime I loved getting this familiar romp through MB having a very bad day and working through its emotions while also trying not to die. And it was fun having the twist on the usual formula with things being so isolated and it having to handle everything while being off its game, it felt a lot more tense than some of the other entries just by virtue of the fact that MB's narration was so much less confident than usual, and it made it really nice to hear the fire come back to its voice once we hit that point in the story. 11/10 as usual I love this bot so goddamn much

Like the old nativity scenes, Hob thought in passing. Of blessed mother, sacred child and divine angel. 

And oh, what wings! A kaleidoscopic array of colours, casting rainbow hues as a crystal refracts light. All about her sang with life and vibrancy in their presence. Then, with a shift of their feathers, they were immense, dark windows to the universe. Utterly devoid of all light, pulling forth energy from everything that surrounded her, as if she bore two black holes at her back.

Hob peered one eye out from beneath his goose feather fortress, before pulling himself free with a sigh. "Dream, come back to bed. Your simple human needs a few more hours if he's going to face 30 odd freshmens tomorrow."

Pulling his bare legs out from beneath him, Dream dropped gently to the floor. Hob's old shirt hanging in loose  folds about his thighs, one sleeve draped precariously off his shoulder. Tip towing silently across the floor and slinking back into the bed, Hob granted him a tired yet loving, lopsided grin. Already fighting the droop of his eyelids. 

"Look at you, shining like a star." 

Dream smiled indulgently as Hob let out a loud yawn. Tucking himself snuggly against the side of his body. Basking in the heat of his duvet cocooned skin. With his head neatly resting in the curve of Hob's neck, he let out a small chuckle."I do no such thing Hob Gadling.

She made an immediate start toward Night, joy and relief flooding her features, before her sense of  proprietary reasserted itself. Halting subtlety and walking instead towards Dream, a courteous expression on her face as she bowed respectfully. 

"My Lord. It is an honour to welcome you home."

Dream smiled graciously, before turning to look briefly at Night, then back to his Librarian. He gave her a compassionate smile, before gracefully stepping aside, "It is alright Lucienne, I understand."

Lucienne's face shone with gratitude, "Thank you sir." She said with palpable warmth, nodding her head once more in deference, before striding quickly towards Night. 

Night reached out to her, their hands immediately joining as they smiled with open affection at each other. "Oh sir, we were all so worried! We thought…" Tears formed at her eyes and Night rubbed at her hands soothingly. "Dry your eyes Lucienne." He said softly. "All is well now." 

Pulling her hands from his grip, she dabbed gentiley at her eyes. Then returned her attention to him, a look of immense pride and wonderment on her face. 

"You are resplendent sir"

Dream's head reared with a snap, mouth set in a violent snarl. Darkness bled from iris, through his pupil, until his eyes were a pitch, fathomless black. Starlight pinpricks flaring in the centre like a nova. 

"Desist talking in riddles you harpies!"

They let out another hideous cackle. Hob's anger soared. For once, he wished he was more than mere flesh and bone, more than human…So he might have the power to smother them.

"Harpies are we? So cruel, landless king." 

"You wound us, once of the seven."

"Mind your tongue, Dream no longer, lest we rip it from you."

ϟ for IRIS Log #1548, the moment(s) that made me the sicko in the window was a) when dick thought jason and cass had blown up and b) when jason asks to throw up and bruce was like "he's always been this way" there is just SO MUCH conveyed in this fic through dialogue it's amazing

this is a full sickos moment to me. talking past each other. Jason is not being serious- he would say the same thing in this instance to Roy or Kory or Dick or Artemis, (etc). All of whom are people he does really like and respect, and who would respond in different ways but would not think he's being serious (for the most part. Dick would ignore it, but because he and Jason don't talk about their relationship, Jason thinks that's the same thing as Dick thinking he's joking. oops!) Bruce, however, is taking him seriously. They've lost the ability to listen to each other and to phrase things in ways that the other understands, and in absence of communication comes assumptions, which are any relationship death knell and are for sure murdering this one. Jason thinks Bruce doesn't love him anymore, feels disowned and abandoned. Bruce thinks that his love for Jason is unwelcome and unwanted and tries to keep it from him so that it doesn't make Jason angrier for feeling parental things about Jason that Jason doesn't want from him. (insert my unpublished bruce and jason relationship analysis here). FULL sickos to me in 2 lines.

Something that never made it into the fic which i regret now is that Dick ordered Damian off of comms not because of the sex jokes (although that Is what made him remember damian was on there, just because that's when damian spoke for the first time since the direct crash aftermath) but because he didn't want damian on the line if they all ended up listening to jason have a serious medical emergency and perhaps dying. damian is aware of sex. talia is a doctor. bruce does sex ed regularly and it's only moderately traumatizing. Damian however has seen and heard enough people die that it doesn't even occur to him that that could be something Dick is worried about, and if Dick says that it's the issue he was thinking of in front of everybody Damian is going to start talking about how that doesn't bother him and how hardened he is to death and that Will make dick feel worse!!!!!!! haha. yes... yes!!!!! (sickos)

and my littlest one. for the longest time at the very beginning it was just "Selective Line, Batman, Robin:" because I wanted to convey to the reader a sense of the structure in the beginning so that when it changed later it would not be a surprise or feel like bending the format to the story instead of making the story fit the format, but I didn't actually know what to put there, so it just floated there, alone, mocking me. And finally we figured that they should be arguing about damian going to go and visit Dick in bludhaven for the weekend (sickos moment on many levels), and then Damian pulling out his secret weapon of calling talia, but not for himself. Specifically for her to visit jason. Bruce can be regular about talia in his own way in most circumstances but in the context of jason and talia he becomes the fucking grinch.

Damian does not end up calling Talia. Talia busts into the hospital to read his chart and heckle everyone about his care and treatment while Jason's still waking up from his long ass orthopedic surgery and Damian goes and hangs out with Dick while Bruce is in the hospital with Jason. LOL. Everybody wins!! not bruce though. bruce wins talia interacting with jason in front of him, and a migraine.

anyways. im glad that the background characterization threads running through this fic were notable to people who weren't just me <3

Other Girls Characters & Their Mario Kart Mains

so essentially the bestie @souplover13 just wrote another great fic for my musical "other girls" and the opening scene features two characters playing mario kart, which reminded me of the summer of 2021 and 2022 i was obsessed with unlocking every character/vehicle on mario kart wii while working on other girls (writing in 2021 and preproduction in 2022) so needless to say i had a lot of time to think about who each main character's mario kart main(s) would be and why. and since this is my blog and i can make whatever unhinged posts i want here's all those thoughts (note: characters are limited to the mario kart wii roster bc that's what i was playing on)

Lillly - Rosalina

in terms of aesthetic one might assume lillly would be closer to peach, but lillly likes rosalina more bc instead of being the love interest who's being saved rosalina is a loner with a vaguely fucked up backstory and cool vibes. the blue aesthetic might be a bit of iris's influence too (for these purposes lillly and iris are counted as the same person). but mostly lillly chooses rosalina over the other princesses bc rosalina is in the heavy weight class and she likes running into people and knocking them off the road

Hunter - Luigi

one might expect the reason hunter plays as luigi to be because of the green aesthetic or being the sidekick etc. however this is actually because hunter used to be a mario main - like he's the type of guy who played mario kart as mario using the standard kart. lillly roasted him so hard for this the first time they played together than hunter decided to switch things up by playing luigi on the standard bike and it stuck

Juno - Yoshi or Daisy

this might be just a me thing but i feel like picking yoshi is a vibe for questioning people. like not everyone who picks yoshi is questioning their gender but if you are yoshi is a good choice idk i can't explain it. however juno is always willing to give up the role of yoshi if someone else wants them (mostly dinosaur facts, who is willing to fight to play as the dinosaur character) and in that case they'll usually pick daisy just for aesthetics

Aubrey - Formerly Dry Bowser, Currently Waluigi

aubrey would be obsessed with unlocking dry bowser (one of the hardest characters to get). ze would then be obsessed with playing as dry bowser. every time someone else, whether they're a human player or an npc, would be in a race as bowser, ze would insist on referring to them as "wet bowser". a lot. all conversations would be dominated by trash talking wet bowser. eventually, the rest of aubrey's high school friends would be like hey, it makes us very uncomfortable that you won't stop saying the phrase "wet bowser", leading to both bowsers being banned from all mario kart matches. now aubrey plays as waluigi, for the purple and the memes, and instead insists on doing a waluigi impression the entire time. it's slightly more tolerable

AIIIGHT LESGO YOU ASKED FOR IT

As you guys know, 105 is Iris Thompson, the girl who can manipulate reality through photographs. In SCP 5000, the Foundation decides to destroy all humanity to save us from a much worse fate at the hands of the Entity, also known as IT. It just so happens to be that those are Iris Thompson's initials. That's not just a coincidence, as in SCP 3002, there is a girl that shows up in every person's memories in a single town. Recalling the memory is often a chaotic process, and sometimes causes the individual distress. They recall the girl from their childhood was Eastern European (same as Iris I think) who was new to their school. In all memories she was a pale, blond girl (also same as Iris) Lily Veselka, which can be translated and interpreted as Iris. Put simply, when you tell someone about the memory, whatever 3002 is gets access to that person's memory. FULL access. Capable of removing altering and replacing any memory, it can effectively change a person's actions and personality. Then, it can pretty much take over your mind. In this way it could easily create a MK Class EOTW scenario (end of human consciousness). Other GoIs have said about the anomaly "you should have seen this coming" and "we fear She is among us now." Now what does all of this have to do with 5000? The Entity, the 3002 entity, IT, Iris Thompson…. they're all suspiciously similar and I theorize that they are the same person. At the end of the 3002 document is a proposal for dealing with 3002, no description, and we don't know whether it was approved or not. But I think that it was, and furthermore it spawned Project PNEUMA from the 5000 article, where through PNEUMA research they connected the dots, just like I did here. (Probably not realizing it was Iris though.) So they decide to eliminate humanity themselves, instead of leaving IT (Iris) to mess with our consciousness at her will, possibly putting us through much worse than death. Why didn't IT just take over the world then? The 5000 process did take a long time, after all. Well it's because IT/3002 was put under an anti-meme, which limited its effects but only for a short period of time, allowing the Foundation to carry out their plan. All along IT had been playing along, with joining Alpha-9 and being docile and all that, only because it was under influence of the anti-meme. As you might know, in the end Pietro manages to stop the world from ending and resets reality back to the time before the Foundation decided on destroying humanity. But he also reset it back to a time where they had no idea what IT could do. Basically, after the reset, IT had free rein. The Foundation losing was the bad ending.

I love connecting SCPs. Was she really playing along during her time in Alpha-9 or was she not yet aware of the extend of the foundation's actions and eventually turned on them?

And pictures are basically solid memories. I can understand an anonymous effect on pictures expanding to the nonphysical concepts of memories, I really like that concept. I need to reread all of these with this idea in mind

The simple "pinhole" eyes of nautiluses do not have the sclera-iris-pupil setup that human or coleoid eyes have. It's basically just an open hole that works like a camera obscura.

The red eyes of stoners are caused by increased blood flow to the whites of the eye. This wouldn't happen if there isn't a white area where the blood vessels are visible. Therefore we should probably not expect Gnarly Eddy's eyes to be red.

i.e. what are the most common beliefs about it, is there fear surrounding death or something else, are there any gods of death and how to people in your world feel about them, is there an afterlife that people believe in and how does it work, what rituals and practices are there in regards to the dead (burials, mummification, burying them with important objects, burning the body, etc), and anything else you would like to share

It took me forever to answer because I actually had to think about this one, but here I am 😅 I went into details for two species instead of the 5 (vampires, Faes, mermaids, werewolves & witches) I had in mind, because I need to think more about the others, but I hope you'll like it anyway ^^

So... The thing about La Fledgling is that it's a story about endings. Lou is immortal, Jo is not. Lou (and most of their friends) will live forever or something close to forever, Jo will die. She has limited time and so much to do, which means that, concrètement, she hasn't really thought about what comes after.

(Which means that I, the author, hadn't thought about it either, but let's blame it on the character, shall we? 💀)

So... Death...

For the vampires:

Vampires can die (insert *people die if they are killed* meme here), as vampires tend to do in other fantasy stories. So decapitation, silver, symbols of faith (and real faith, just waving a symbol won't work - you have to believe), fire, sunlight, stake through the heart... the classics will work, but if you really want to be original and take them by surprise, you could also poison them through the blood servants they feed from. I'm just throwing this out there, no reason.

Several vampire families were killed during the hunter/vampire wars, entire Coven burnt to the ground, knowledge evaporated, entire lignées brought to the brink of extinction. Needless to say, it terrified the vampires who then decided to retire from the public eye and live secular lives among themselves, where they don't have to interact with humans (much. Feeding is another story entirely).

They feared death during these few centuries when it came knocking at their doors, but during the novel, none of the vampires think about death as something that concerns them. Death is something humans and semi-mortal creatures go through, and something that happened to them a thousand years ago.

There is no afterlife for vampires, because they are not supposed to die.

For the Fae:

Fae live until they get tired of living, at which point they can choose between several options :

become a tree -> really popular, as long as it's not in the moral realm because on Earth you tree might be cut down and you will spend the rest of eternity as a very ugly couch or coffee table

spend a few years as an animal and live as a cryptid in either the fae realm or on Earth (I'm not saying le Dahu is a Fae but... yeah that's exactly what I'm saying) -> marginally less popular and often time not the definitive choice. Old Faes who don't know if they really want to "fade away" or not will spend a few decades or centuries as an owl, a cat or some kind of made up animal/creature, and when their time is up, they'll seen if they want to go for option 1 (*be the seed*), option 2 (go back to their ancient life and keep on living until they get bored again) or option 3 (below)

reincarnate -> the least popular choice by far (Iris Adam, who chose to get reincarnated 250 times is an outlier and shouldn't have been counted), because the fates like to mess with faes and there is no guarantee a Fae will be reincarnated as a Fae in her next life. She could be human. Or a cockroach. Or the southern wind. Or she could be a Fae but come back wrong. Really, there's nothing sure about this option.

Fae who chose to become trees all planted their roots in the same forest and they can be heard, from time to time, giving unsolicited advices to the younglings having fun beneath their branches.

For the witches:

They mostly have the same approach as the humans, except they live up to 500 years instead of 80, which mean they start worrying about it a lot later. They still are the weakest (physically speaking) of all the magical and semi-mortal species, which means they are much more prone to accident and very few actually reach past their second or third century.

For the mermaids:

They also live very long lives and have the advantage of being away from humans most of the time, so when wars or conflict start again on the surface, they can just... swim away and wait for the storm to pass. The older a mermaid gets, the bigger she is, and the more she has to eat. There are only three really old (we're talking several thousand years old) mermaids because they feed on weaker mermaids - or, more precisely, younger, weaker or otherwise hurt mermaids are send bound and pre-broken to the deep caves in which the dwell and the three leviathan feast of the flesh of the unwilling.

Death is either a sacrifice (eaten by a leviathan) or a victory (not eaten by the leviathans bc they 1) died in combat so they at least were not eaten alive or 2) ran away on land to escape their fate which brings its own problems)

For the werewolves:

Mix between the witches and the mermaids. They die of old age (live longer than humans, less prone to disease or accident than witches) or in a fight and then they get eaten by the rest of the pack so that their spirits and knowledge can stay with the pack. Yay.

For Jo (sole human in this crazy friend group):

She doesn't think about it. She'll die when she'll die. She used to be really religious, but her faith was shattered when her whole family was murdered and Lou became a bloodsucker, so she doesn't really believe in an afterlife (be it hell or heaven). But should she be proven wrong, she's ready to throw hands with whomever is here to welcome her.
