Life Update (And it’s a good one!)

Hey everyone! I’m back. Let me explain my radio silence for the past few months.

My husbands family owns about 100 acres of land out in a rural area outside the city. We had the opportunity to buy a pre owned trailer from one of his cousins, and move it to the 10 acres that was left to my husband. The land that was left to him (us) was completely undeveloped and no one had lived there before so we had to start from scratch and work FAST as our lease on our apartment in the city ran out September 1st. So we started working on the land in early July. We had to cut down trees, put a driveway in, pour a concrete pad for our house, run power, water, and internet up to our new home, move the actual trailer from its original spot up to our 10 acres. Also, the trailer hadn’t been lived in for two years so we had to put many many MANY man hours of blood, sweat, and tears into our home. We repainted every room, put in new light and water fixtures, scrubbed floors, fixed toilets, put up blinds and curtains in every room, there isn’t a single surface in this place that hasn’t been redone. So while we spent every single weekend and night up at our new home, every hour spent at our apartment we were packing. Even though we only lived there for a year we had accumulated a massive amount of stuff between the three of us. The week we moved all of our stuff up to our new home, my husband‘s grandma passed away.

Since our new home was in a rural area we were losing the child care we were using for one year-old a.k.a. my parents. My husband had gotten a huge raise around this time so I was finally able to quit my job as a secretary and be able to stay home every day with our daughter. This is all I’ve ever wanted since she was born. To be able to stay home with her and spend every moment of my free time with her and it was finally plausible due to this move. We paid cash for our home and we own the land. Our Internet is subsidized through the government since we live in a rural area so that falls under our power bill as does the trash. So we literally have two bills every month and everything else is paid for. Life couldn’t have worked out any better for us.

We’ve been in our new home for about a month now and since were finally settled in, I’ve decided to return to blogging since now I have the free time to do so. I can’t wait for y’all to see what I have planned for this blog and my social media.

5 Things I Wish I Had Added To My Baby Registry-- And 5 Things I Wish I Hadn't

One of the FIRST things I did as soon as I found out I was pregnant, I RAN (not walked) to several different sites and immediately started on my baby registry. I googled checklists, pinned examples, and asked my mom friends every question I could think of. Luckily for me, I had a few other mom friends and an older cousin that had just given birth who I inundated with questions and hypotheticals. After a few weeks of meticulous planning, I was ready to share my perfected list with my family and friends.

5 Things I Wish I Had Added

Diapers of EVERY size. While I was pregnant, I kept hearing “stock up on diapers now!” So in my pregnant nesting craze I got 500-something diapers in the (N) newborn size. Let’s do some math here. My daughter was in size (N) diapers for about a month and a half before we needed size (1). Assuming she used about 8 diapers per day (some days she used more and some days less, I'm sure) for 45 days, that's a mere 360 diapers. We were left with over 200 something unused size (N) diapers!! Instead, I wish I had asked for about 100-200 diapers in EACH size. That way, you have a few to start off with and you can just buy small boxes once you use up that first initial batch.

Cold weather clothes. Now maybe this is just because we live in the Deep South where it gets ACTUALLY cold (below 50 degrees) maybe 2 to 2 ½ months out of the year, but I had almost no cold weather clothes. I had stocked up tons of newborn onesies, expecting her to be in those for months, HA, how wrong I was. Instead, I should’ve been stocking up on more cold weather clothes to prepare for those colder months. Get a variety of sizes since it will be colder for longer periods of time depending on where you live. (If you live up north, don’t forget your warm weather clothes!)

Rechargeable batteries. Now bare with me on this one, it seems like a silly thing for a baby registry but kids toys go through batteries FAST! Especially when that one bouncer seat or one song that toys plays, seems to be the only thing that will soothe the baby! Put AA and AAA rechargeable batteries on your list (don’t forget your charger!) and thank me later.

Bath toys. I was so busy buying our little girl books and toys that I completely forgot about bath time toys! Get your little one something waterproof to occupy them during bath time. There’s all sorts of squeeze toys, floating toys, washable tub crayons, the options are endless. Once they get a little bit older, they will need something to distract them to keep bath time smooth sailing and fuss free.

Socks. I reasoned with myself while pregnant saying “Well she won’t leave the house much, what do we need socks for?” and in hindsight, I really wish I had stocked up on more socks. I’ll be honest with you now. Those cute little shoes you can't wait for your baby to wear? They won’t last much longer than the few seconds it takes you to snap your instagram worthy baby OOTD pic. Specifically get fuzzy socks for warmth for 0-3 months, and socks with little grippy pads on the bottom for crawling/walking/climbing for 3-12 months.

5 Things I Wish I Would've Left Off

Humidifier. We live in the Deep South where it is humid almost all year round. I had read a bunch of baby blogs saying you DEFINITELY need a humidifier on your registry without taking our weather into account. Looking back, I wish I would have added a DEhumidifier instead of a humidifier.

Baby Stroller Bag. I got an extra bag that attaches to the handles of our stroller to carry extra stuff while out and about. I realized after purchasing that we honestly didn’t need that much storage. Our stroller already had a compartment in the bottom, two cup holders, and storage between them. The extra bag just ended up getting in the way and weighing the stroller down.

Bath Thermometer. I was extremely overly paranoid of making AJ’s bath too hot and scalding my poor baby so I asked for a baby bath thermometer on my registry. I used it about twice before realizing I had a twenty-something-dollar rubber ducky she was never going to use. If your baby’s skin turns pink and they're sweating, turn the temp down. Simple as that! Who woulda thought?

About seven different brands of bottles. I kept hearing you need to let your baby try multiple different brands of baby bottles to see which one they would like. This becomes difficult once you realize each brand has its own independent system of nipples. It became confusing trying to remember which level nipple she needed on which bottle. Start out with one brand and if the baby wont take to the nipple, then try another. This will save you a lot of headache later!

Portable Pacifier Sanitizer. The idea seemed great in theory, but it was super heavy and took up a lot of space in the diaper bag. Instead, I’d carry around two or three pacifiers and if one fell on the ground, I'd move it to a separate pocket, pull out a clean one, and keep on trucking.

It might take you weeks to come up with the perfect registry, and hopefully my small bit of insight will help you make those final tweaks to your list. Use some common sense and don’t let your nesting take over, and you’ll come out ahead and without regrets!
