Crack That Knuckle...

Are you ever out and about and all of a sudden hear a crack, like someone was in a chiropractic appointment but your walking the streets living your life? That person is me! So many older when I crack my knuckles try to tell me, “don’t do that you’ll get arthritis” and I’m like nah its all good. It sounds to me like “you’ll shoot your eye out kid” from A Christmas Story. Of course in the movie he does, but this is real life not a movie.

What’s funny is my sister also cracks her knuckles a lot. She mentioned to me the other day, it’s nice to just be around someone that cracks their knuckles too. I remember being younger and hearing that all the time, and defiantly asking a doctor, A LEGITIMATE DOCTOR, who I went to Tae Kwon Do with, “Does cracking your knuckles lead to arthritis?” “No it does not.” THE DOCTOR(S) SAID IT. I will often quote this memory to people. But it got me thinking a little bit.

One, where did this “old wives tale” come from? Second, why is it that I/sister can do it but it seems like everyone else can’t? (And maybe thats why they are so bothered by it?) But a great place to start is, what even is “Cracking Your Knuckles?”

What is Cracking Your Knuckles?

The “popping” or “cracking” sound that happens when we crack your knuckles is caused by popping bubbles in your synovial fluid, which is responsible for lubricating your joints. When you pull your bones apart, there is a buildup of negative pressure, causing these bubbles to burst.

Will Cracking Your Knuckles cause Arthritis?

"Cracking your knuckles does no harm at all to our joints," says Dr. Klapper. "It does not lead to arthritis."

How many people can crack their knuckles?

Over time, various researchers have found that 25–54% of people crack their knuckles and that men are more likely to do it habitually than women.

I thought for years that I could do it more because I was double jointed, in both my fingers and toes. Funny my hands are a weird mix of characteristics: double jointed, trigger thumb, piano fingers, man hands. Anyways, that means I am one of those people that can do this...

It tends to gross most people out so I don’t really do it. It relaxes me a lot, some say its a nervous gesture. I am curious, are there any other double jointed people out there? Can you use your toes like your hands? Who cracks their knuckles? This is a common sight around the Basin and Range region. After a quick bit of research the following is a paraphrase of what I found. Harvester ants strip the ground of vegetation, then build their mounds in the center of the stripped area, creating vegetation free circles. Some of the seeds that the ants like to harvest have attractive glands that ants seek out. The ants then take these seeds into their chambers where they remove the glands. They then discard the seeds outside of their dens typically placing them in their “garbage dumps,” resulting in these flower rings. I would love to learn more about this, as I am fascinated with both ants and monkey flowers. I would appreciate any insight and corrections on what we researched and posted here.
