Eames led me in with his hand on my back in faux professionalism but with genuine care. We had dressed up all nice and proper for our first day. The thick black dress hugged my curves in a way I was not used to, and revealed my legs way more than I could stand. It felt constricting compared with the jeans (which I’d had for years) and baggy shirts I usually wore on jobs. I fixed my newly acquired fake glasses and my disguise was complete.
We walked up the stone steps to the house that loomed like my private gallows. Why was I so nervous? Eames was right next to me, and this was hardly the first intel operation I’d done with him.
I wobbled about in my precarious heels and my ankles practically gave out when I reached the fourth step. My embarrassment was saved by Eames’ quick grasp of my elbow, righting me lest I draw attention to our entrance.
Our fancy dress shoes clinked in synchronisation and stopped to face each other before we breached the fateful doors. One last debrief.
“What are we here to do?” Eames prepped me.
“Gather as much information about the father-son relationship and see what we can use to our advantage. And you’re going to be studying Browning to mimic his movement, mannerisms, and speech.” I completed with pride.
“Very good baby Cobb.”
“Hey! I vetoed that nickname!”
“The most important thing is don’t be seen.” I raised my eyebrow at his ridiculous request. “You know what I mean, don’t draw attention to yourself. And whatever you do, don’t talk to Fischer.”
I laughed at how serious he looked holding my gaze. I tried to leave to go in, thinking the conversation was done. But I was held in place by his hand on my arm.
“Don’t talk to Robert.” He tilted his head, and I felt the meaning of his words. He’d seen me with the picture. I shucked his hand off my arm and left abruptly.
“Don’t be ridiculous!” I seethed.
He met the quick pace I had formed so he didn’t see the distress I felt at his distrust. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust me, he thought he needed to manage me. Take care of me. Like I was a child.
We both arrived at the top of a dark oak staircase that exuded the feel of wealth and prosperity. The house was so quiet that my heels were like a gunshot in a library. I began to tilt my head up to look at the expanse of the house in wonder. It seemed it had more shadows than glimmers of light. The house choked on its own emptiness.
“Mr and Mrs Trent?” A perky blonde approached us as we walked around the first floor aimlessly.
I panicked at her assumption. “No, no, no, no. We are not a couple—not even--. Miss James.” I shoved out my hand hoping she and I would both forget my stuttering. Great first impression.
She reluctantly met my hand. “Okay, I see well if you both come this way, we can get you started. There is quite a lot to do due to Mr Fischer’s declining health. You will both be responsible for sorting through the different files; making sure, if an account is prepared, it is filed away, and if it’s not, it is highlighted to be looked at.” Eames’ and I’s mouths ached from the smiles we were forcing towards Little Miss Big Boobs.
But we both righted our faces to make it seem like we were focused on the 'challenging' task rather than admitting this kind of work was trivial compared to our own jobs. We placed our bags down, took the exaggerated lapel badges handed to us, and began to quickly complete our task. We had previously discussed that we would complete the task first, not wanting to have hindered the Fischer empire any more than we were already going to, then go about our snooping.
I opened my first file, quickly read it, then assigned it it’s place. I’d always had a mind that worked faster than most. Arthur used to joke that my projections run rather than walk. This meant general schoolwork had seemed mundane to me when I was a child. Kids can be cruel to the kid who always finishes first. No one likes a show off.
After I had read my 10th file in less than 5 minutes, I noticed Eames was gesturing and mouthing something towards me.
‘SLOW DOWN’ Ah I forgot. Don’t draw attention to yourself.
My job here wasn’t exactly defined, by Fischer or Eames.
Eames trailed Browning like a shadow, subtly mimicking every move in a sort of dress rehearsal. I tracked him with my gaze, in awe at his skill. Partially because his skill was slick enough to pass between everyone’s tired eyes.
All at once, a commotion began around my section. Some balshy intern had decided to push Browning for an answer on question he didn’t want to hear. He went on to sarcastically suggest that the intern should bring the question to Maurice himself. He strutted away and drove open the large double doors that blanketed the room. When the oak parted I found myself moving away from my corner to peek into the scene revealed.
Maurice Fischer lay on his hospital bed surrounded by equipment which stood in contrast to the dark interior that sat around them. Browning walked through and instead of approaching Fischer senior; he made his way to the window where a man stood. His back was to me, but his figure was distinguished. My feet edged me forward a little more.
“Argghh” Maurice flailed out his arms. In his frenzy, he had knocked down a picture from his bedside. The man turned at the noise and it was there I saw the face I had longed to see. Robert Fischer.
He moved to pick up the picture with a sort of meekness. And as he looked up to his father there was a sense of shame there. As if he was once again the height of a young boy. He rose, broken picture scarring his hand. I see Browning and Fischer exchange words. I inch forward more so that my frame centres in the doorway. Suddenly…
“Mr Browning, I have some—” CRASH.
The balshy intern from before slams into my shoulder and knocks me onto the floor. Papers fly everywhere and I audibly wince when my knees come in contact with the hardwood floor. Shit.
I compose myself, trying not to consider how obvious I just made myself. As I slide my pages back together, 2 more hands join my own. I stop in my tracks, registering the person before me. I reluctantly look up and fall into a pool of blue.
“Are you okay?” I sharply intake.
He studies my face as I fail to speak. When I see him poised for an answer, my brain snaps back.

*Robert’s pov*
“I put it there.” My finger drags down the cracked memory. “He didn’t even notice.”
My thoughts are overtaken when a loud crash reverberates throughout the room. My head snaps up, annoyed at the offending noise, but when I look up, I am overcome. I see a girl on the floor struggling to clean up her mess. I rush to her aid, glaring at the man who had knocked her down. As I passed him, I gently stated,
“You’re fired.” He goes to argue but retreats back into the office.
I kneel in front of her rushed attempt at clearing up and chuckle at how she had just seemed to make more mess in her haste.
“Are you okay?” She met my eyes and my breath caught as I fully took her in. She was beautiful.
Minute long seconds passed of us just gazing. I could have stayed there a lifetime if she let me.
“Yes, I am fine. I am so sorry about the mess; I’ll clean it up and I’d understand if you want me to leave.” I stopped her rambling by clasping her hand in mine. I then picked strands of her hair to place behind her ears to reveal more of the face she was trying to hide. Her spew of words was like music to me and what interested me even more were her little laughs between thoughts, as if apologetic for what she said.

My sputtering was pathetic, but I was rendered speechless when he held my hand. I quickly retracted the offending limb to push up my glasses as if they could save me now. My thoughts were equally filled with his words but also my warnings. I had to leave and tell Eames the mistake I’d made so we could rectify it.
Together we had collected the papers into a transportable pile, and I stood up. But I braved it too quickly and found myself stumbling in my heels once again. Robert hadn’t let go of me even as I stood up, making sure I was okay. My leg which had gone numb from my position on the floor gave out and pushed me into Robert’s awaiting arms.
I let myself sink further into the perfect feeling of being in his warmth. He felt like a warm beach in the afternoon sun. But I quickly remembered my place. I jumped back in fright.
“You’re bleeding!” Robert exclaimed. As I stumbled back, he had noticed drops of blood adorning my newly scraped knee.
“Oh, it’s nothing.” I tried to placate his worry as I began to make my way to the exit.
“No, come, I’ll clean it up.” He grasped my hand and led me through his father’s room despite my protests.
“Mr Fischer, please, you are far too busy. I can sort it myself.” We had made it through another door that led into a room which was so uniquely childlike.
“Please, I’ve been looking for an excuse to leave.” He smirked at me and led me to sit down on the window seat. He went to a drawer for plasters and then another for disinfectant. He moved about the room with assuredness. He returned and lifted my leg so that it rested over his knees. I tugged down the end of my short-ish dress. He opened the disinfectant and dabbed it with cotton wool. As he went about this, I took in the room around me.
It felt busy but not cluttered. In the middle of the back wall sat a single bed with light blue cotton sheets. The sheets were decorated with multi-coloured windmills. The white bedside tables held many trinkets of a young boy. The chest of drawers was home to more pictures and framed memories. My head lifted higher, and I saw the sky painted blue and it held wooden planes that flew around the room with a freedom I believe the owner wished he had.
“This is your room, isn’t it.” I whispered.
He didn’t look up from my scar. “Yes.” He chuckled. “Not that I stay in it.”
We both laughed. “I could see you still squeezing into that.” I pointed to the neatly made bed.
“I have thought about it.” He remarked.
I braved my next words. “Or maybe you just want to sleep in a simpler time.” Our eyes met again.
I noticed a familiar picture which sat on the chest. And I realised it was the same one that rested on the window seat between us, covered by Robert’s jacket.
“Is that you and your dad?” I mentally smacked myself for such a stupid question.
“Yeah.” He spoke.
“How old are you here?” I picked up the delicate frame. I smiled at the picture of a young Robert blowing on a handmade windmill, sat in his father’s lap. I could feel the love radiating from this image. It now seemed so different to the coldness one felt in this house.
“10. The nurse said he may respond to being surrounded by happy memories. That was the happiest day of my life.” He placed his arms around me to join mine on the frame.  “I just didn’t think that it might not be one for him.” As I turned to face him, I realised how close we were. One gentle slip and our lips would touch. Each exhale was felt on the others face. “There’s something. Have we met before?”
What was I doing?!
I retreated back, freeing myself from his arms. I had to leave. Find Eames and get out of here.
“I am so sorry, but I have to go—I just—I--.” I barely even finished a sentence as I ran out, back to the office. I threw my hair in front of my face as if that would help me now. Eames, Eames, EAMES!

*Robert’s pov*
I ran back to catch her before she left. I was unsuccessful so I asked Browning. She’d left so quickly I’d never even gotten her name. But I knew I needed it.
“That intern, what’s her name?” I asked my godfather.
“I don’t know, why? Where did you just go off to?” He responded.
“I’ve had to be numb to a lot in my life, but just then I felt something.” I would see that girl again if it’s the last thing I do. "Something real."

Eames and I were safely in our rental car, driving back to the warehouse. Eames seemed pleased at his progress and thankfully hadn’t noticed my absence.
“I have Browning down to a T and I think he is going to be the key. If we can somehow get Robert’s own projection of Browning to—” As he prattled on, I struggled to quieten my breathing after my speedy getaway. All I could do was watch the world pass by my window, willing my mind to forget everything that just happened. How Cinderella of me.
“You, okay?” Eames looked over to me concerned.
“Yeah. I think the bad relationship with the father is the way in. Everything about that dynamic is so…broken.” I softly spoke.
“Nice. I like a good gap to sneak through.” I rolled my eyes at his childishness but also couldn’t help but laugh.
“He saw me.” I admitted.
The car came to a grinding halt. I sat cowering hearing Eames’ heavy sighs. “I’m sorry.” I managed to stumble out through my choked throat. Eames’ head hung low in his hands.
“Why?” he huffed out.
“I didn’t really have much control over it!” I argued back. This wasn’t a complete lie, in more ways than one. It had to happen. “Please don’t tell my dad, I can’t have him thinking I blew this whole case. Because I didn’t okay, because it’s fixable! You know that! Please you can help me fix it!” I was now begging Eames by scrambling at his coat to force him to look into my apologetic eyes.
“I thought you were better than that.” He spat.
“So did I.” I slumped back in my seat. A minute of silence passed. We both just stewed in it.
“I won’t tell your dad.” I let out a breath I hadn’t realised I’d been holding on to. “But-“ I gave him my entire focus. “You mustn’t get distracted. Promise?” He held his pinkie out to me. I giggled remembering fondly.
“I promise.” I finished, linking my pinkie with his and then we both kissed our thumbs together whilst making a corresponding sound.
We drove off once more. Eames satisfied in the promise he’d made me make. I was terrified that I would break it.

The doors let you go with a ding and they close. Stepping onto the main waiting area, you walked through the floor; through the waiting and meeting rooms and to a hall—the path led by shiny wooden floors. You make your way to the end of the hallway to the door of Robert’s office. His name is in bold, black letters embossed on a golden plaque.
You take a breath and lean closer to the door, the three soft knocks that announce your presence.
———
“Come in.” A voice from the other side beckons. You follow the voice and open the door, to see Robert starting to clean up his stuff, getting ready to head out. You meet his small smile as you enter the door, and immediately help him gather some papers. “Sorry Mr. Fischer, I was just checking up on you. Here, let me.” You offer and your hand gently lays on the desk close to his for the papers. Your words temporarily stop him for a moment. You were checking up on him. A small smirk made its way to his face as he slowly took the papers from you. “It’s okay Y/N, you’ve done too much today. I should repay you for your help.” He says, his voice was soft. His soft and gentle tone is rare to hear, as it was not meant for the cutthroat workplace that Fischer-Morrow was. You smiled with a mirrored smirk and a chuckle. “You do repay me Mr. Fischer; with my salary.” Your chuckle at your joke painted a bigger smile at your boss, who looked at you with his beautiful blue eyes.
“Don’t be silly Y/N. I mean it. You helped me more than I can count.” You looked up at your boss and smiled. Oh, what you would do to kiss him right now. Those ocean eyes are starting to make you melt under pressure. I mean, they always have, but this time he looked at you differently; you couldn’t put your finger on it. “Oh, well, of course, Mr. Fischer.” You said with a small smile.
Robert smiled sweetly, clearing his throat and feeling the nerves start to get the best of him. The words seem to be stuck at the base of his throat: his palms are starting to sweat and he can feel his heartbeat increase tenfold. The waiting look you’re giving him is making him melt.
Robert takes a breath and chuckles off the growing nerves. “And to repay you, I’m offering you to join me for dinner tonight—unless you want to of course.” Your heart felt like it was about to burst through your chest. The words that came out of your boss’ mouth were something you thought you never would have wanted. With your relationship already hanging on a single thread, your crush on Robert increased. But you never done anything considering it was unprofessional…wait. Was it unprofessional if he was asking?
You smiled and felt a heated blush touch the surface of your cheeks. “I would love to, Mr. Fischer but; would this be considered inappropriate?” You asked, crossing your arms in thought. Robert smirked shyly. “It’s for business if anyone asks. You have your organizer, correct?” He said as he finished packing his suitcase. You stood there in awe and a dumb smile. “Yeah, I do.” “Then let’s head out.” He smiles and opens the door for you. You turn around and return a short ‘thank you’ as you walk past him; trying so hard to contain the glee that’s about to jump out of your chest. Unbeknownst to you, however, Robert was doing the same thing. The sheer happiness and warmth that you said yes was hard to contain—especially on his facial features.
Following him closely behind, Robert swiftly walked outside, being a gentleman throughout. Letting you step first, holding the doors for you, etc. You smiled at the gesture, as you both ended up outside the large Fischer-Morrow building. With his hand on your waist leading you forward, the driver arrived just in time to open the door and collect both your and Robert’s briefcases.
Stepping into the car and settling in your usual spot, Robert did the same and muttered to the driver the restaurant name and soon, the car made it’s way onto the busy city roads.
You felt the air already get awkward and you took a breath, before turning to your boss with a smile. “So, what’s the place you had in mind?” You politely asked, hoping to lighten the air and the car ride. Robert turned his attention to you, a soft smile painting his lips. “A small place. Nothing fancy.” You chuckled, and it took Robert everything to not react the way he wanted. Your laughs and giggles were certainly music to his ears. “You know we have different definitions of fancy, Robert.” He shrugs playfully. “I don’t think so. I think we’re about the same.” You titled your head sideways, looking at him with a playful look. “I think in one of our late night overtimes in your office, fancy is very different in our books.” “I do remember. And I do like your version of fancy. It’s simple.” You too engage in small talk, like you have done thousands of times before.
“So I should expect dazzling chandeliers and high ceilings?” You humoured. He chuckled, glad you were playing along. “It’s a hole in the wall place. I usually don’t go here for meetings. It’s more personal.” He smiles, watching your blushing face under the moving lights from the street. You felt your cheeks heat up and you smiled, hiding your face as you cast your eyes downward.
———
You had arrived at the fancy restaurant with Robert. Of course, he had humorously labelled it as a “small place, nothing fancy”. You begged a differ when your eyes went wide with awe at how beautiful the restaurant was in fact, and how you immediately felt out of place.
Robert immediately took note of your equal awe and embarrassment and guided you closer to him with a hand on the small of your back. The waiter approached the two of you and led you both to your lavish table, overlooking the Sydney city skyline. “Is this okay for you?” Robert asked, taking you out of your trance. “Yes of course! This is more than okay, Mr. Fischer, I assure you.” Professionalism still lacing your voice he chuckled. “You know we’re not at work Y/N, you can call me Robert.” A breathy chuckle escaped your lips as your eyes downcast in another wave of embarrassment. Oh, the effect he’s putting on you. “Um, right, yes. Sorry, Robert.” You let out a heavy sigh and smiled up at him. “It’s just a habit I guess. I don’t necessarily see you outside of Fischer-Morrow so…” Robert smiled; his eyebrows furrowing in curiosity. “Hmm. Well, I’m sure you go out more days than I do; have friends of your own.” “I don’t. You’re probably my only real friend if had in years.” His look softened while his heart skipped a beat inside. “Sorry, that wasn’t supposed to be sad. It’s just a fact. A fact that I am okay with.”
“It’s okay, Y/N. I think we are the same in that sense. You know how the company has become my life—it’s hard to form real connections nowadays. Especially with my father—” Your hands immediately go to Robert’s in comfort, noting the slight crack and tone change in his voice when mentioning his father. “—it’s okay Robert. You don’t have to talk about work and your father here. It's a safe space!” You quipped at that last part, hoping the comfort was what he needed. He gave a shy smile and a nod, agreeing with your words. “You’re right. Thank you.” And with that, the waiter had come by with already Robert’s preferred wine and water for you. He asked the two what you would order and you looked at the menu, unsure of the dishes. Barely any photos provided visuals are the countless dishes and you hid yourself in your menu, lowering your head in embarrassment. The waiter spoke to Robert, and before moving to you, he quickly leaned in closer to Robert only to leave once again.
“I don’t know what to order. All of these look…great!” That last word you said playfully, hoping that the tone would fool Robert, but it didn’t as she shared another chuckle and tapped the top of your menu to get your attention. You lifted your head to showcase your eyes and to hide the growing blush on your cheeks. Robert gave a small, but genuine laugh at your demeanour, one that he frankly didn’t have much of. “It’s okay, I gave us a few more minutes.”
The huff of relief that gave away in your expression put a permanent smile on Robert’s cheeks, and he watched you put down the menu almost immediately. He had never seen you so animated. If this is what you acted beyond work, then my god was he falling for you hard. Due to your younger age, you were somewhat more casual and cheerful at work—it was refreshing really. Especially in a cutthroat work environment like Fischer-Morrow was, everyone took themselves too seriously. Of course, that was the face of the company; but it was a marvel that you could easily be just as animated and pure yet so professional. Robert saw it as a blessing and was glad that you were able to move in under his wing. It gave some light into work, especially now since it's been nothing but getting ready for the dark inevitable.
“Thank you, Robert.” You simply replied as he helped you decide what to order. It was a lot of playful exchange, with Robert describing some of the dishes and your face squinting in confusion. Simply put, you asked what was something classically delicious that you could pronounce, and with a small chuckle, Robert helped navigate which one you would like. The waiter soon came back, took the orders and headed to the kitchen. Silence befell the two of you once again until Robert coughed to clear the air.
“So what about you, Y/N? Anything going on at home?” He started with a small smile; His eyes focusing on your delicate hands that lay on the table. You chuckled at the thought and shook your head. “No. My life outside work is not interesting.” Robert’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “Not from what you tell me. And that’s coming from me, where work is nothing but my life. C’mon, what about that trip you were going to take?” You chuckled nervously. You remembered that you hinted at a “trip” away from the city, which just meant away from your abusive boyfriend and out of that horrid house. “It’s still on the table, but, I guess on hold for you and the company. We both know that you’ll need it most now that—” You stop at your words and give another breathy chuckle; catching yourself talking about work. “I’m sorry, I’m breaking my own rule.” “It’s okay, we can change the subject.” You nod along and look at Robert, only now, his expression changed from calm to worried.
He reaches for your hands and grips them ever so gently. “Y/N, are you really okay at home?” You try to retreat your hands to hide the small bruises on your knuckles but Robert immediately calms you down. “It’s okay, Y/N. You can tell me. Remember? It’s a safe space.”
Your head tilts at his words and you can feel your heart flutter. Your heartbeat also increases tenfold and your hands start to generate sweat. “It’s nothing. I…” Robert gives a worried, almost pleading look, wanting to know the truth. “I can handle myself.” And that’s all that he needed to hear as he let go of a breath. “I can make it go away Y/N.” You nod your head. It’s sweet enough but with dealing with his father already you felt guilty that you had to add to his list. “Robert, you’re really sweet but it’s okay really. You have your father and the company to worry about—“ “Y/N, you are part of the company, an important part in that too. Please.”
With your hands in his, he rubs soothing and gentle circles with his thumb on your hands. The look he gave you would surely make you melt, and that’s when you realized that you could not deny it anymore. You’re in love with Robert. And you knew what you had to do. You nod ever so slightly at his words and his eyes finally soften.
Robert felt his heart drop with the thought of someone hurting you. You could never forgive himself as she felt like he should’ve addressed it sooner, but now was the time he could do something. It was going to be hard of course, with his father and the company, but he was going to keep his word. You were the only thing in his life that made sense to him—brought him friendship, loyalty and comfort at the worst times, and if he could return and do the same for you, he would do it in a heartbeat. He realize that he does love you.
———
The dinner had painted a smile on your face the entire night, and it felt great. But after Robert and his driver dropped you off back at home, you noticed the hesitation before he let you go inside. The hold on your hand lingered more than it should’ve but you didn’t care—you’d savour every moment with him if you could.
The late-night masked you in the dark home. Closing the door quietly, you made your way upstairs to the bedroom and suddenly, the lights turned on as you had quietly started to change into your pyjamas.
Your boyfriend stood in the dark. His figure sitting up on the bed looking at you with an unreadable expression. “Y/N, where were you?” You looked away, shaking your head in annoyance, switching your attention to removing your socks. Your heartbeat increased, however. “Overtime at work, I don’t need to explain again.” Suddenly, he gets up from the bed and rushes toward you, shoving you into the dresser. He traps you between him and the large dresser and his large frame. The dresser knobs dig into your back as the shock from the sudden rush startled you. “Don’t you talk back at me.” He says in a low, almost dangerous tone. Your breathing grows heavy and you immediately duck and get out between the dresser and his frame, shoving your boyfriend with all your might, he stumbles back.
He reacts with anger, throwing the nearest object at you, which is one of your favourite perfumes. The glass bottle shatters behind you and the liquid spills on the wall, staining the dark paint. You ducked just in time and moved when he threw it, missing you completely but you felt the shattered glass pieces making their way to bounce off of your back. “Stop it! I’m sorry okay?” You yelled at him. You ran to the bed, the farthest away you could get to your boyfriend when he tried to chase you. He jumps onto the bed and you try to get away, but he traps you within the bed, getting on top of you and using his weight against you.
“You really mean it?” He says, the tone of his voice different than it was before. You huffed as you were out of breath and couldn’t meet your boyfriend’s eyes. “Yes.” You say breathlessly, your tone shaky. “You know I just want to spend time with you. You’re never home and it’s driving me crazy.” He says, his voice different than his actions. “I love you. I just wanna be with you.” You nodded silently, as he started to bring kisses to your neck. You closed your eyes, exhausted with the same treatment you get every night. “I’m sorry.” He apologizes, his hand making its way underneath your shirt.
——
Your boyfriend lays asleep beside you in your shared bed, completely drunk and dozed off. You get out of bed and walk over to grab your discarded shirt on the floor and wrap it around you. Making your way under the covers you scoot away from your boyfriend as far as you possibly can on your bed, and you face away from him, towards your bedside table.
You see the phone on the bedside table, thinking about Robert’s words from dinner. Your hand reaches towards it, but you hesitate and stop. Looking back at your boyfriend, you get up again from the bed and go into your shared home office, turning on the laptop. The bright screen illuminates you from the darkness and your fingers quietly type away. The screen shows you the nearest hotels and their price listings, and you open another tab for any houses and spots to rent nearby work.

What is the most resilient parasite? Bacteria? A virus? An intestinal worm? An idea. Resilient... highly contagious. Once an idea has taken hold of the brain it's almost impossible to eradicate. An idea that is fully formed - fully understood - that sticks; right in there somewhere.

The Flirting Game | Eames x gn!reader
Anonymous asked: Eames: Hi!! Hope you're doing good 🖤! May I please request something using the following prompts for Eames X non-binary, male, or gn!Reader: "Just fucking leave it, alright?!" Thank you 🖤!! 🐍anon
summary: tensions are rising, and it's not fun for you or Eames.

Eames hummed as he shuffled his playing cards at the table, only daring to look at you from the corner of his eye; you had been sour all day, and he couldn't pinpoint why. Your bad mood, he assumed, was just one of those days. It had to be. He couldn’t think of any reason why you would be in such an awful mood, after all.
But then, maybe it was something he had done; he thought about it for a moment, then shook his head. No, he hadn’t even spoken to you that day except a few texts here and there to check in with one another like usual. But Eames couldn’t wrap his head around it, and frowned as he looked over at you as you made yourself a cup of coffee; something was definitely wrong, as a heavy metal song he knew you loved was playing on the Bluetooth speaker connected to his phone, but you didn’t even mouth the lyrics like you usually did when you made coffee.
He furrowed his brows, you were definitely up shit’s creek and he was sure that he was holding the paddle; he used his phone to turn up the volume a little bit, but you didn’t notice. Something was absolutely wrong. He rose from his chair, letting his playing cards fall to the table before he made his way over to you, grabbing your sides like he usually did but doing his best not to hum in disappointment when you didn’t play along like usual.
“What is it?”
“Don’t fucking worry,” you huffed, brushing him off.
That wasn’t normal, either.
You never brushed Eames off, the same as he never brushed you off; you were the best of friends, always had been. You never brushed one another off - sure, you kept secrets and you had boundaries, but you never, never brushed each other off or pushed each other away. He was confused, and admittedly, a little hurt.
“Darling-”
“Just fucking leave it, alright?!” You snapped, pushing him away from you before storming off to the bedroom.
Eames frowned, wincing a little when the door slammed shut. He sighed, shaking his head as he didn’t know what the fuck he was meant to do. He didn’t know how to comfort you, he didn’t even know what was eating away at you so terribly. If he knew, maybe he could have comforted you; he knew though, that his own problems would have to wait.
Sure, Eames had been pining after you for years upon years and had wished that he had had the time to tell you how he had felt for so long - but either his work, personal shit, or your work always got in the way. Like the universe was against him and didn’t want you together as anything but friends. He sighed, resigning himself to the table and drinking your coffee. He hated it, it wasn’t made the way that he liked but he drank it anyway because he loved you enough to look past a different taste in coffee.
He sighed, going back to his cards and shuffling them as he waited and waited; it felt like years before he heard the door open again, and quiet, hesitant footsteps approached. Eames looked up when you reached the chair beside him, and he dared to smile as he cleared his throat.
“Good evening, darling.”
“I’m really sorry, dearest,” you said softly, shaking your head. “I just… a lot of shit right now.”
Eames nodded in understanding. “For all of us. It’s alright.”
You sighed, shaking your head again. “It’s not.”
“Darling,” he scoffed, shaking his head fondly as he started to lay his cards out for a game of solitaire. “I love you enough to forgive you for drinking shit coffee. I’ll forgive you for a little lashing out.”
“You’re not pissed?”
“No!” Eames almost laughed. “If you had broken my mum’s shire horse ornament, then yeah - but you didn’t. So I don’t care. A door can be replaced - you can’t.”
“Thanks…” you muttered, leaning your arms on the table. You rested your chin just below your hand as you sighed. “Can I let you in?”
He nodded, placing one card on another. “Always.”
“It’s Cobb,” you explained, “he keeps flirting with me and sending me all these really flattering and… weird, if I’m honest, messages. Like he wants to, I dunno, go on a date or something but I… shit, Eames, I can’t imagine doing something like that with anyone but…”
“But?”
“Anyone but you,” you muttered, shaking your head. “I know, I know I’m an idiot and I should probably jump at the chance to spend time with anyone else but… but you get me. You let me in, and I let you in. We’re…”
“We’re good together, darling,” Eames replied, doing very little to not sound smug. “Aren’t we?”
You nodded in agreement, daring to smile. “We are, yeah… quite honestly, I’d be fucking livid to spend my days with anyone but you.”
He grinned, nodding. “So it’s mutual… can I let you in?”
You nodded. “Always.”
“I’ve been meaning to tell you for ages,” he started, “but my work, your work, personal shit with both of us always gets in the way… but, my dearest darling, I’ve wanted to be something different to friends for so long. I told you - I said, you mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger. What if my dream’s being able to spend my years with you?”
“Then I’d tell you we need to do everything we can to make it real,” you said softly. “But, y’know, Eames, I have to admit something.”
“Go on.”
“You’re so much better at flirting than Cobb is,” you laughed, shaking your head. “Really. So, so much fucking better.”
Eames grinned as he licked his lips. “Someone like you? I always have to be on top form - can’t have someone else snatching you up, can I?”
You grinned back as you shrugged. “I guess not.”

You were in a car with Cobb, Arthur, Saito and Eames following one taxi driver. Cobb bumped into him and stopped the car. You saw angry taxi driver step out of his car and mumbled swears on Cobb. But Cobb pointed a gun at him. The taxi driver turned pale and closed his mouth.
‘Walk away.’ Cobb said with a gun in his hand. Arthur and Saito ran out of the car to get in the stolen taxi. You with Eames were getting ready to go out too. When you saw Fischer got into the taxi you opened door and with Eames you ran to them.
Fischer was telling Arthur adress where he wanted to go when Eamas opened the door. Eamas hold the door for you and you quickly got in. It was raining a lot so you didn't want to get any wetter than you already were.
Fischer turned to look who opened the door and when he saw you he froze. You were absolutely beautiful. He never saw prettier girl than you.
He quickly shake his daze off when he saw Eamas. ‘What are you doing?’ Fischer asked no one particular. You looked at him with a little smirk on you face and he blushed a little. His blush was light but you still could see it.
‘We are sorry, we thought it was free.’ Eamas answered. Fischer looked surprised. He was little speechless at this time. But he quickly again shook it off. ‘No, it’s not.’ Fischer said with a hint of anger in his voice.
You giggle a little bit and it seemed to catch his attention. He give you a quick little smile.
‘Maybe we could share.’ Eames suggested while he raised his eyebrows. Fischer frowned. That was ridiculous. How dare he said something like that. Fischer thought.
Fischer turned to Arthur. ‘Can you pull over to get this-’ He didn’t even finish the sentence when Saito pointed a gun at him.
Fischer let out a loud sigh and leaned back against the seat. You and Eamas looked at him with grins on your faces.
Meanwhile Cobb picked up Ariadne. They were right behind us when a big black train rammed into them.
You heard a loud blow but Fischer started talking. ‘It’s 500 dollars in there, the wallet worth more than that. At least drop me where I want.’ Fischer said while putting the wallet on your lap.
‘I’m afraid that-’ Eamas couldn’t finished because Arthur stopped the taxi.
You could felt how Fischer let his hand on your thigh little longer. But you were more interested in the car which stopped in front of you. You saw two man got out with guns. Arthur tried backed but there was another car with some man with guns in it.
‘Cover him!’ Arthur yelled on you. You put a piece of rag on Fischer’s head and pull him into you. More precisely into your belly. He was right in the middle. He was glad you couldn’t see him because he was red like tomato.
Those mens started shooting on the taxi. And they didn’t miss. They shot out the entire rear window. Arthur stepped on the gas and drove into the grey car in front of him.
Eamas turn to those mens behind us and start shooting back at them. You pulled Fischer more into you and put your arms around him tight.
Arthur was driving like a crazy to get us out of there. Saito looked out the window and starts shooting too. He shot one guy and he fell on the floor. Arthur backed up again wile four mens where coming to us. We were surrounded.
One guy shot through front window. Luckily he missed Arthur’s head. Arthur quickly shot one guy and start driving again. Fischer put his arms around your waist and he snuggled up to you. You cover him with your body.
Suddenly Cobb bumped into one men with his own stolen car. You pull out your gun and started shooting too. Arthur backed into one of the armed guys. But he didn’t kill him. He wanted to shot you to back of your head.
‘Take him down!’ Arthur yelled on Eamas. Eamas quickly shoot the guy and covered himself. ‘Thanks.’ you said to him. Eamas nod as a sign that he heard you. Arthur could finally leave. ‘You alright guys?’ Arthur asked. You looked up on Arthur and you nod at him. Fischer was still curled up in your arms.
‘I- Yeah, yeah I’m okay.’ Eamas answered. Arthur turn on Saito who was sitting next to him. ‘Saito?’ Arthur asked. This time the question was aimed at Saito.
But when Arthur looked at Saito he could see that Saito get shoot. He get the shot into his left shoulder.
Arthur was right after Cobb’s car and he stopped in some street.
Eamas ran out the car to open big white gate. You drive in. ‘Get Fischer to the back room now!’ Cobb shout at you. You grab Fischer who was still wearing the piece of rag on his head and take him out. You found the back room, got in quickly and closed the door.
You put Fischer down on the floor and sat in front of him. You took off the rag from his head and checked him out. ‘Are you okay, they didn’t shoot you right?’ you started look on his face, arms, chest and legs. You never know.
He raised his head and look at you. He had the most beautiful eyes you ever saw. He had messy wet hair from the commotion.
He was still shaking a little so you stroked his hand quickly. ‘I’m okay.’ he answered to you. You gave him little smile when you start standing up. You were almost at the door when you heard him speak again. ‘Thank you.’ he mumbled. You turn to look at him actually little surprised. ‘You’re welcome.’ you answered.
You left the room and he sigh. Maybe his kidnappers weren’t that bad. No he thought it wrong, you weren’t that bad. Those other people who were with you were bad but you are absolutely perfect!

Meeting Your Mark
Robert Fischer x reader
description - Y/n knows the most dangerous move you can make is to fall in love with your mark.
word count - 1.7k
warnings - mentions of death, the sharpness of cillians cheekbones, how piercing his blue eyes are.
a/n - okay so I promise the Robert stuff is coming! The next chapter will be an important one, this was just a filler pretty much. Also I loved writing about y/n and Ariadne cause I felt they would both relish in the other when surrounded by men - specifically y/n.
a/n 2 - We finally have Tom Hardy in this chapter!!

I sat on the window ledge, clutching my coffee like a lifeline. It tethered me back to reality. I got out the picture from my jean pocket. I brushed my fingers over the fake braces and then found them stroking the faces of my siblings. Their gleeful smiles frozen in time.
The door creaked open, announcing Arthur’s entrance. I hopped to it and wiped away the tears that had escaped. All morning my mind had been plagued with visions of a man. I wasn’t even dreaming and yet he still remained. He’d nested within my brain, and he wasn’t leaving any time soon. But no matter how much I strained trying to make out the face, I was at a loss. It was almost like I couldn’t create the face because he had already been made. But I was yet to meet him. With how much closer I’d been getting to his figure with each time asleep, I felt our meet was imminent.
“You sleep, okay?”
“Like a log.” Arthur’s eyes drifted to the case I had hurriedly packed up.
“You went under?”
“No.” I lied. But he didn’t breach the topic any further as we were both stopped by Ariadne clearing her throat.
We turned around.
“Cobb said you’d be back.” Arthur remarks.
“Yeah, well, I tried to not come but- “
“There’s nothing quite like it.” I finished for her. She smiled softly at me.
“It’s just—pure creation.” She held her gaze with me. There was a brief silence between us three, waiting for someone to continue the discussion.
“Let’s look at some paradoxical architecture.” Arthur broke the silence and led us both to 3 deck chairs he’d laid out. We lay down and hooked ourselves up. Within seconds we were away.
-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-
We found ourselves in a structured glass office building. Arthur winked at me. It was the first building I’d ever created, and he’d saved it all these years. This is where I’d honed my own paradoxical skills. He led the two of us up a staircase.
“You’re gonna have to master a few tricks, if you’re gonna build three complete dream levels.”
“Excuse me,” I said as we passed a woman who had dropped her files.
“Why three?” She asked.
“Successful inception depends on planting the idea deep enough that the genesis of the idea becomes too foggy for the subject. 3 levels deep, 3 dream levels.”
“Anyways, what kind of tricks do I need?’
“In a dream you can cheat architecture into impossible shapes that lets you create closed loops.” We had been walking the staircase in a circle now, proving one of my favourite closed loops. “Like the Penrose steps.”
“Aka, the infinite staircase.” We passed the woman with the dropped files once again. “See.”
Ariadne suddenly took stock of her surroundings and saw the end of the staircase culminate in a sharp drop.
“Paradox.” We left the staircase and began to walk around the office building so Arthur could explain further. “So, a closed loop like that allows us to disguise the boundaries of the dream.”
“But how big do these levels have to be?”
“Well, it could be anything from the floor of a building to an entire city. But they have to be complicated enough so that we can hide from the projections.”
“A maze.”
“Right, a maze.”
“And the better the maze- “
“The longer we have before the projections catch us.” I smirked at how quickly Ariadne had grasped the concept. She truly put my dad to shame. And having her with us meant I no longer had to work with incompetent male architects. This girl was the real deal.
“Exactly.”
“Well, my subconscious seems polite enough.”
Arthur and I chuckled. “Just wait, they’ll turn ugly.” I answered. “No one likes to feel someone messing around in their mind.”
“Cobb can’t build anymore, can he?” Ariadne questioned. I wanted to argue but she was right. He thought about mum too much where his mind could never be clean enough to build anew.
“Well, I don’t know if he can’t, but he won’t. He thinks it’s safer if he doesn’t know the layout.”
“Why?”
“He won’t tell us.” I lowered my head, Dad might not have told me why, but he told me enough.
“But I think it’s Mal.”
“Yeah, no offence but your mum was a piece of work.” She laughed, gesturing to me. “What does his ex-wife have to do with it.”
“Mal’s not his ex.”
“They’re still together?”
“No,” I spoke up. “She died. What you see in there is just his projection of her.”
Her eyes softened when they looked at me. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine.”
“What was she like in real life?”
“She was lovely.” I smiled thinking back in my memories.
-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-
Ariadne and I sat talking with our coffees and croissants. Arthur had left to get some supplies, so we decided to have a rest. We’d been drawing and planning all morning, so a break was well earned.
“You have an architecture degree?”
“No, I never got to finish it.”
“Why?”
“My dad needed me here. So, I left.”
“Oh.” She sensed the underlying sadness so left the topic. “But your drawings are amazing, why can’t you build.”
“Oh, I don’t build anymore.” I laughed brushing off her statement.
“Does it have something to do with your mom?”
“We all have our own demons, I guess. And it’s terrifying when they get opened up to the world.”
“She’s still your mom.”
“No, she died. That person in his head, that’s not her.”
“Seems you have a better grasp on that then he does.”
“I guess.” I rose, uncomfortable with the conversation, and she took my tone as her cue to end the conversation.
-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-
Dad had arrived back from Mombasa. When he entered with Eames I immediately ran into his awaiting arms.
“My favourite little troublemaker! How’re you doing darling?”
“So much better now you’re here!” I cheekily winked at him.
“Oh, I can imagine working with Arthur is the most exciting thing imaginable!” Eames sarcastically said.
“Nice to see you too, Eames.” Arthur huffed as he walked away from us two.
“Don’t insult him or he’ll start going over safety procedures again!”
We both laughed and finished with another hug.
-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-
I sit with Eames and Cobb out on the roof. Saito flings a file towards the three of us and it opens out onto the table.
“Robert Fischer. Heir to the Fischer Morrow Energy Conglomerate.” Dad looks at the file and then hands it to me.
My breath catches in my throat as my eyes meet his steely blues. The rest of the world became water that flooded my ears with white noise. I couldn’t grasp onto any sound in the world apart from my beating heart. My finger raised to stroke the picture. He stood there, dressed to the nines. His hair perfectly styled, and his body adorned in riches. But his eyes, as piercing as they were, held a sadness. He was lost. I could feel it through the ink.
“What’s your problem with this Mr Fischer?” I snapped up but failed to notice that my daze had been caught.
“That’s not your concern.” Saito’s tone cut through the air. I scoffed at his brazen attitude.
“Mr Saito, this is not your typical corporate espionage. You asked me for inception, I hope you understand the gravity of that request.”
I couldn’t stand it. This may have been purely business and transactional, but something shifted. This couldn’t be purely business with our skills involved. I decided to speak up.
“The seed we plant in this man’s mind will grow into an idea. This idea will come to define him. It may come to change, well, everything about him. This man is on a course of fate and. We. Will. Alter. It.”
Saito took a moment, considering my words. He relented to my warning.
“We’re the last company standing between them, and total energy dominance and we can no longer compete. Soon they’ll control the energy supply of over half the world. In effect, they become a new superpower.” He pounds the table. “The world needs Robert Fischer to change his mind.”
“And that’s where we come in.” Eames perks up to give his two cents. “How is Robert Fischer’s relationship with his father?”
“Rumour is the relationship is quite complicated.” This tugged at my heart for some reason. My eyes drifted to my own father.
“Well, we can’t work based solely on rumour, can we?”
Eames turned his file around the show us a picture of an obviously esteemed individual.
“Can you get me access to this man? Browning, Fischer seniors right hand man,”
I read my own file. “And Fischer juniors godfather.” I finished.
“It should be possible, if you can get the right references.” I chuckled at how simple this request was for Eames.
“References are something of a speciality for me, Mr Saito.” Eames cheekily stated.
“Then it is done.” All three of us got up.
But I felt changed and Eames noticed my subtle slump.
“I saw how you reacted to the picture.”
“What? He has nice—cheekbones? And blue eyes.” I stumbled through my unsure answer.
“Don’t worry, I’m not your dad.” He laughs at my bad attempt at lying. “How do you fancy a quick internship at Fischer’s house.” He raised his eyebrows, inviting me into another mischievous mission. I smirked and happily agreed to his scheme.
-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-
On the other side of the roof, Saito, who had been looking at y/n intently throughout the meeting, stopped Cobb before he left.
“Your daughter. She is committed to this mission?”
“I don’t doubt my teammates.”
“What about your family?” He probed. Cobb became silent. “I saw her demeanour when she saw that picture. I’d hate to see your one chance disappear because of your daughters schoolgirl crush. Perhaps she is not as reliable as you think?”
Cobb halted his movements and considered Saito’s words as the man left the roof. He looked towards y/n who still had the file open in her hands. In that moment, he saw his daughter for who she truly was, a child without a childhood.
Would she be that impulsive?
Would she be that stupid?
Would she risk it all for him?
-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-
Yes. Yes I would risk it all for Cillian Murphy too.

"Overexposure to dream sharing can cause an individual to be unable to dream naturally. Many people who can no longer dream must use a PASIV device if they wish to dream while they sleep."
Wait, I've just confused myself - does this mean for hardened dreamsharers, extractors etc. should they suddenly find themselves in a dream, having spent months or years without being able to dream without a pasiv, the automatic assumption would be to assume you were being extracted from? Is it almost an automatic failsafe? Wake yourself if you find yourself suddenly dreaming because someone must have plugged you into a pasiv? Or am I imagining a plot hole/point that doesn't actively exist?
