Another reportage illustration from the @nycmarathon last year. I imagine the walk through the park after the finish is like nothing else. This one is going into my new and improved portfolio along with a few others like it. I'm aiming to do more live drawings like this throughout 2019 as a professional. From sporting events to concerts to street fairs, I love seeing other people in their element, and it would be a great privilege to have my drawings in an article about their events. Last night my illustration class visited Ogilvy and met with the director of their sketch group. It. Was. Awesome! What really impressed me was how quickly their illustrators work across totally different mediums. In the morning, they might paint portraits of business leaders for a corporate conference the next day. Then, in the afternoon, they might cut paper stencils for an animated GIF that a startup needs ready in two days. Later in the week, the might be using 3D printers. The turnover looked insane. The director was very encouraging when reviewing my work. He and a couple illustrators (former students of the class!) said the speed comes with experience, and the work I'm doing now is on a good track. They suggested I allow myself to cheat more: use photo references, trace things, draw straight into photoshop etc. I taught myself to draw by sticking to opposing principles - draw from life, draw with pen and paper, etc - so this is all new to me. But I left last night feeling more excited than ever about what I can do moving forward. There are so many cool things to make in this life. I am very, very lucky. For those of you artsy people, I highly recommend Grant Shaffer's class at SVA. He has been an excellent resource and a great coach. I am sad that his class is nearing an end, but also deeply grateful for what it started. PORTFOLIO BOOKS

Q: I’m bored with the book I use to show my illustration. What else is there?

Conference season is coming up! (It’s always conference season somewhere, isn’t it?) And we sometimes want to rethink how we present our illustration work. While the book and binding itself are not the main attraction, illustrators often think long and hard about what format works best for their specific priorities: portability, flexibility, uniqueness…and any number of other factors.

So the Girllustrators got together to share our portfolios. We chatted about the pros, cons, and how-tos. This collection is not comprehensive; we don’t go into the various standard portfolios offered in art supply stores, or the perfectly valid choice of a simple presentation folder from the office supply store.

Eliza ordered a custom-made book from Etsy, and asked her sister to create the laser-cut flocking for the cover. The paper is 11x14 with screw-fasteners. To attach art to the pages, she uses Best Test paper cement. “I really want to make some endpages too.” Eliza reminded us of her emergency solution for last year’s regional conference when she realized her Etsy book wasn’t going to arrive in time. We all remembered loving this playful thrift-store folder!

Vanessa ordered her book and pages online too, from Kolo/Top Drawer. It’s another 11x14 book, and has a space for a namecard to be inserted in the cover. Patty pointed out: “You can get those on QVC too!” And several Girllustrators mentioned Pina Zangaro being a popular brand available at a number of online art supply stores. Vanessa uses scrapbooking tape to attach her art on the pages; she gets her work printed at White House Custom Colour, which has a location in nearby Houston and delivers in two days.

Marsha chose to order a custom-printed 8.5 x 11 hardback photo book for the last conference; she used Picaboo, which was having a promotion offering 2 free copies with her order at the time. She went with landscape orientation and lay-flat pages, which use a thick stock. “I was very happy with this,” she commented.

Patty did something similar, but ordered a softcover in a square format from Shutterfly. “I just wanted a down and dirty solution that was fast.” She liked the fact that she could design the pages herself online, and she used the opportunity to print art will full-bleeds just as it is in her picture books.

It was Lalena who asked the question today! She had been using this standard, professional portfolio book for several years, which she likes for the versatility of being able to rearrange work for different purposes (being a graphic designer as well). And it has pockets and an elastic strap for including dummy books and postcards. But she doesn’t care for the glare of the acetate pages, and would like to size down for ease in transport. So, thanks for your input, Girlls!

We just want to wrap up by pointing out that there is no all-around right choice for a portfolio book, and there is no need to spend a lot of money, either. Most importantly, the presentation should be tidy, organized, and user-friendly. But aside from that, as Rivkah says, “They aren’t going to be looking at the portfolio, they’re going to be looking at the work.”
