not to keep vagueposting about animal welfare discourse, but i happened to run into one of the blogs that was shitting on scout for their cow husbandry and the shit they were saying was so fucking stupid...it was something along the lines of 'rabbits aren't social animals because their wild ancestors have a social group set entirely by mating/the HRS tries to force you to bond rabbits unnecessarily and is a peta-affiliated organization/its unnecessary to spay female rabbits because the 85% association between uterine cancer and not spaying is only supported by two studies', all of which may make sense for breeding rabbits is complete and utter bullshit when dealing with pet rabbits.

Rabbits are indeed social animals that grow anxious when alone and should have SOME form of companionship most hours of the day. This does not have to be another rabbit, and the urging to establish a bonded pair is typically done for people who are OUT OF THE HOUSE most of the day. HRS and shelters don't 'force' pairings, they encourage them because having someone around 24/7 isnt always viable in American households. When I tried to get Celeste bonded because I was worried about her welfare (this was when I was 14 and new to rabbits), both the HRS and shelters talked us out of it because she very clearly did not care about other buns, and didn't need to be bonded because there was always someone around them. But if you're a singular person who's away from home most of the time, then yes you need some sort of partner animal because it reduces stress in your rabbit.

Those social structures are ofc going to be different if you have unfixed breeding animals, but the core aspect of it is still the same. Rabbits are social animals. They are comforted by the presence of others around them, form bonds with other rabbits, and feel more secure in groups. Just because they are more territorial when unfixed (as they should!) doesn't reduce the fact that they are social prey animals, it just means that you need to keep them in different conditions than you would a fixed creature with less hormonal urges

The HRS is not aligned with PETA. They denounce affiliations with meat breeders because they're entirely based on improving the welfare of rabbits that are kept as pets. I can see why some might feel offended on their stance against meat rabbits, but rabbits are still primarily viewed as livestock, and after hearing enough comments about people wanting to eat my rabbit, I can understand why they'd be so clear on it. People are assholes about pets that are commonly viewed as feeder animals.

There is indeed a high risk associated between UNBRED unspayed female rabbits and uterine cancer. This is supported by several studies on animals with similar breeding lifestyles by multiple veterinary institutions. You won't notice it in your breeding females because the risk is SPECIFICALLY for unbred animals, aka most pets. So yes, spaying is necessary for your doe's health if you do not intend to regularly breed or have stopped regularly breeding

Even if there wasn't a very real danger to their health, you'd still need to get them fixed to reduce behavioral problems. Unfixed rabbits are much more territorial, destructive, and aggressive, making them more difficult to keep in a home environment. They will growl, they will lunge and bite (and rabbit bites are not something you want to fuck with- I have scars from Celeste's nips), they will piss and shit to mark their territory and it WILL be pungent and unsanitary even if they are litterbox trained. They can still be cuddly with you, sure, that won't reduce their value as pets, but a perpetually sexually frustrated and territorial animal is not fun to deal with and is arguably unethical for the rabbit. If you want a pet rabbit, you need to get them spayed. And I say this from personal experience- Celeste wasn't spayed when we got her, but after she did get spayed, she became much more manageable and less likely to bite. She was still manageable beforehand, but afterwards she was a hell of a lot more relaxed and not stressed

There's nothing wrong with having significantly different husbandry because you are a meat/fur breeder; unfixed animals have different temperaments, different needs, and are typically kept in different conditions that are more economically and behaviorally suited to turning a profit. But those care requirements change drastically when you have only one to two fixed animals in a home environment, which means that you cannot pass judgement on pet care requirements when you're a meat breeder, and visa versa.

Unless you're in India, they're not habituating because they're not wild animals, they're feral domestics. If they're hanging around and being fed, congrats, she's got free range peafowl. It's free birds!

As for the mix, I would cut out the nuts. Fruits are fine but they don't really like citrus and they shouldn't have avocado. Fresh fruits are better than dried, dried concentrates the sugars and doesn't provide any hydration. If she'll listen to you, tell her you have a friend that breeds peafowl and that they suggested better treats would be live mealworms or superworms, dubia roaches, farm-raised hornworms, or mouse pinkies. They also like fish (at least feeder fish, but possibly also larger fish they can pick apart) and meats. They can be given veggies, but they don't rip things apart the way chickens do their beaks are not as able to tear into hard things, so veggies should be chopped small. They will happily rip up greens or melons that are cut open though. Banana too! They love banana and berries.

Black oil sunflower seed and safflower are good seeds, limit corn intake. No beans allowed except refried ones. Planting clover in her yard will be a good source of nutrient-rich greens (and good for bees!).

But honestly, a good high-protein dry chow with some water added fresh to it will provide a lot of benefit, just as much attention, and probably be cheaper since you can get 50lb for like $20. I use Belstra 28% turkey starter crumble from a local feed mill. It may not look as interesting but my birds get a LOT of varied treats and chow mash is one they'll eat every day without any hesitation, and leave nothing behind. The only other treats that is true for are bugs and farmer's helper golden egg nugget treats. Even peanuts they have turned their noses up at a couple of times.

As for the white color, it's not that rare. A lot of people don't like to keep them because they get dirty easily and because colored birds often HATE them. Hens often won't mate with them if they can see other males, and males often attack or attempt to chase off white hens. In the wild, a white animal draws attention and opens the flock to predation.

So, let's talk about exotics and why you're probably not a responsible owner. (This isn't directed specifically at OP as I don't know them or their situation, rather just in general.)

Most celebrities with money to buy the best enclosures, food, care, vets, etc. aren't even capable of taking care of exotics. Let alone "normal" people.

Most people are not equipped to best care for an exotic animal because the simple fact is exotic animals aren't meant to be pets. Animals mixed with coyotes or wolves, lions, chimps, or any other exotic animal.

Ethics of breeding

Before you even get the animal, you have to deal with the ethics of them being bred. How do the breeders you're looking to use operate? Do they poach babies, for example? Such as the high rate of trafficked cheetahs.

Do they practice unethical breeding practices such as excessive breeding or inbreeding?

What are the conditions their animals live in? Are they well taken care of with lots of space? Are they in good health?

Space

The biggest issue people run into is simply not having the space for the animal. Wolves, for example, cover around 30 miles a day while hunting. They can run up to 40MPH.

These animals cannot be kept in the house. You simply cannot give them enough exercise if you keep them in the house and just walk them.

So, let's say you keep them outside. You have to have a big enough yard for them to run full speed if they want to.

Do you have that kind of space available to you?

But you also need fences to keep them in the yard. Coyotes can jump up to 8 feet and wolves can jump up to 12. So, you have to have a fence that's taller than that and it would probably be best to give them at least a couple feet extra just in case. Do you live in an area that allows you to have fences that tall? Most areas have a fence height of a max of 8 feet.

You also have to worry about them digging out. Do you have a feasible plan to stop them from being able to dig out from underneath the fence?

Food

Exotic pets often cost so much money to feed. Wolves need at least 3.7 pounds of meat at the absolute bare minimum just to survive. But on average, they eat about 10 pounds. Do you have a place where you can buy that much meat? Do you have a place to store the meat that isn't being currently eaten? Can you afford to feed them that much? With prices being up so high, people struggle to even feed themselves meat, let alone an animal.

With different kinds of animals, it's also important to provide them their array of diet. Animals such as raccoons and coyotes are what's known as scavenger animals. This means they eat whatever they can come across. It's important to feed them a variety of foods to keep them healthy.

It's also important to be providing them with the appropriate levels of things such as calcium and other vitamins that keep them healthy.

Because there's not a premixed food for them (like there is for dogs or cats) that means you have to do it yourself. It will be at the very least difficult, if not impossible, to make sure they're getting the right amounts of different foods and vitamins needed.

Health

You'll need a vet nearby that you can take your pet to as well as the money to afford them. Where is the closest exotic vet to you? Do they actually care for the type of animal you have? (Keep in mind, there's often a difference between an exotic vet and a large animal vet.) Do they cater to the public or only zoos? What all can they do? Can you afford their vet bills?

Enrichment

Not only does an animal need a lot of things to keep them occupied, they likely also need company. Where it's easy to keep a large group of rats, it will likely be harder to keep a large group of wolves. The average pack size is 4-9, but a minimum of two can happen. Do you have the space and money for at least two wolves? What happens if they become aggressive with one another, what's the game plan at that time?

Danger

Exotic animals pose not only a threat to their owner (who has consented and taken on the risks associated), but also strangers and neighbors who have not consented to taking on that risk.

Do you have kids or animals in your neighborhood? If so, having an exotic pet that can seriously injure/kill something likely isn't the best decision. Coyotes, for example, are notorious for attacking and/or killing pets. And there's even been a few cases of children being attacked by coyotes, and at least one child death due to them.

What happens if your pet escapes?

Pet chimps, for example, have a long history of escaping and posing a threat to others around. They are often a danger to children, animals, and adults in the neighborhood.

What precautions do you have in place if your chimp begins to attack someone or something? And more importantly, can you emotionally and mentally use them?

Calling the police will take too long and they will likely not be equipped to handle the situation.

Do you have sedatives that you can administer successfully from a distance? How long does it take you to get it ready? How long does it take to work?

Do you have a weapon in case you need it? Are you emotionally and mentally able to kill your pet if needed?

TLDR: While there's nothing wrong with truly ethical exotic pet ownership, the vast majority of people simply do not have the means or preparedness to ethically own an exotic pet.

Crewmate Care Specifics

It's important to note that this is NOT a catchall guide for how to take care of a crewmate, and that if you're considering getting your own you need to do your own research first! Having said that, here's some basics on care.

Food

Crewmates are technically omnivores, but they have trouble eating meat and will likely not recognize it as food. I feed my crewmates mostly fresh fruits and vegetables, with the occasional egg or insect for protein. Ideally, you should provide your crewmates with unlimited access to vegetables and clean water, additional protein twice or three times a week, and one small piece of fruit once a day. Anything with added sugar, such as fruit juice or amogus-safe candy, should be limited to no more than once a week.

Enclosures

Amongi can get pretty big (up to around 3' at maturity for most breeds), and therefore need a lot of space! It's common practice to let the amongi free-roam around the house, but if you don't want to do that, they can live in a medium sized room as long as they get regular walks and trips to amongi parks (which I'll touch on later). Their enclosures should have a litter box, some sort of pet bed, access to enrichment and task toys, and food/water.

Enrichment

Enrichment for crewmates mostly involves task toys and interaction with other amogi. There are special task toys designed specifically for crewmates, but children's toys with moving parts also work. Think similar to those baby-computers where you press a button and it makes sound. As for socialization, if you only have one amogus, you'll need to play with it quite a lot. Crewmates are pack animals, and need frequent socialization. This can also be accomplished by taking your crewmate to an amongus park, which is similar to a dog park, just for amongi!

Acquisition

So, you want to get a crewmate! There are many ways you can go about this. You can adopt from an amogus shelter, purchase from a breeder, or buy from a pet store. No matter what, you want to make sure your source is ethical and treats their amogi well. You can research amongus adoption centers in your area; they're common everywhere amongi live, which thanks to them becoming popular as pets is pretty much everywhere. If you're looking for a specific breed, you'll want to go to a breeder. Some breeds, such as teacup amogi, are unethical and can cause heath problems, so choose your breed carefully. If you want a smaller amogus, consider choosing the teakettle variety instead; teakettle amongi grow to about two feet at maturity and have none of the health problems associated with teacups.

"Well, it wasn't by choice. Toothless fell into it and of course he couldn't fly out until I made his fin" Hiccup said. The dragon rushed over to the lake, to find fish. Merida sat on a nearby rock, watching the Night Fury. She was reminded of her mum as a bear, trying to fish. Hiccup sat next to her and started drawing.

"Want to go swimming together" Merida suddenly asked. She saw Hiccup stopped and turning red.

"Ur… Mer…we can't. We shouldn't…..I…I…" he said flustered.

"Hiccup, I'm joking, don't worry. I don't know if" Merida replied before rubbing her arm. Now regretting what she'd said. Hiccup could see Merida was also nervous about having an intimate moment like swimming together but mostly, seeing each other's bodies.

"Hey, hey. It's ok. Let's take our time with things" He reassured his princess, taking her hand and softly rubbing her knuckles. "Maybe one day we can and anyway you're beautiful".

"Thank you" Merida and gently kissed his cheek. Just as she pulled away, Hiccup turned and kissed her on the lips. She was stunned but instantly kissed him back. They were enjoying this moment of passion when the sound of flapping wings put a stop to their magic moment.

When the dragons landed, the riders relaxed on the stones while their dragons played.

"So there no dragons in DunBroch?" asked Fishlegs.

"No, most people don't believe they exist" Merida said holding Hiccup's hand while his arm rested around her shoulders.

"So, what's in DunBroch?" Astrid said.

"Well, we have sheep, cows, hawks, horses oh and bears" Merida said, counting them on her fingers.

"My mum saw a horse once, she said it had four legs, one big eye with a upper human body and no flesh" Tuffnut said. Everyone, including the dragon looked on in confusion. Even though most of them never seen a horse they could tell that wasn't right.

"No, that's nothing like a horse" Merida finally said.

"Oh, still she dreams about it. Always goes white" Ruffnut said.

"Speaking of things aren't as their seem." Snotlout said "Are you sure you're a princess?"

"Aye. Why?" Merida asked.

"Because you don't act like a princess"

"Oh, and what, pray tell. Should a princess act like" Merida asked crossing her arms.

"Well, something like this" Snotlout announced as he stood up and said in a high pitch voice "Oh look at me, I'm a pretty princess. I love wearing fancy dresses and singing about love" as he pranced around.

"No, I'm not like that at all" Merida answered.

"Definitely not" Hiccup added as he hugged Merida close. Just then, they heard the dragons growling. The teens looked over to see them watching something out at sea. "What is it bud?" Hiccup asked Toothless as he and the others joined them. The Night Fury pointed his head in the of the direction of the disturbance and Hiccup pulled out his telescope to see. "oh"

"What is it?" Merida asked.

"See for yourself" Hiccup said and handed the telescope to her. Merida put it up to her eye, it took a moment but she could see a large boat.

"It's a ship," cried Merida.

"A dragon hunter ship to be exact" Hiccup answered. Merida knew what he meant. Hiccup told her there were Vikings who still hunted dragons. "Ready for a dragon rescue" Merida heard Hiccup asked. Merida didn't need to answer, she was ready.

They didn't waste any time, they all got on their dragons and flew off.

"Should we take Merida back to Berk" Fishlegs asked.

"I'm perfectly fine coming along" Merida said crossly as she held on to Hiccup.

"She's more than capable to join in" Hiccup mentioned before they flew higher. Merida knew that the best way to do this was to use the element of surprise. "Ok Fishlegs, Snotlout, you distract them on the left. Ruff, Tuff, you take the right. Me, Mer and Astrid will jump aboard to save the dragons".

"Ok" "On it" the others called as they flew into position. With Hiccup on Toothless and Astrid riding Stormfly they hovered just near the ship. Merida took out her bow and pressed the button to release it to its full size, as she fasten the string, she saw in time the first dragon fire at the boat. They heard cries and shouts before the twins on Barf and Belch had sprayed gas and then lit the gas to cause a fire.

"Ok let's go" Hiccup said, and the teens shot down on their dragons, making the Viking men on the deck scatter in fear, Toothless and Stormfly landed. The girls jumped off with their weapons in hand followed by Hiccup, who was walking up to a unconscious man to retrieve the keys. "Ok, got some but we need more".

"We'll look for more!" Merida said, as the girls ran off while Hiccup and Toothless began to open the cages. Merida and Astrid were battling the Viking men, as one released the dragons, the other would fight to defend and search for the remaining keys.

"Nothing here" Astrid told Merida before pushed an unconscious Viking out of their way. Merida had unlocked a cage containing a Monstrous Nightmare and its babies, they quickly flew out of the ship like the rest of the captured dragons.

"We need to keep looking" Merida quickly said, when they suddenly heard something roaring beneath them. "Did you hear that? There are more dragons below" Merida said looking at Astrid.

"What are we waiting for? Let's go" Astrid replied, the girls soon found the trap door leading to the deck below, Astrid easily opened it with her axe. Merida climbed down and Astrid was about to jump….

"Don't you dare" shouted a huge man who'd suddenly appeared before them. He lunged his enormous axe at Astrid. The blonde haired girl had let go of the trap door to defend herself.

The hatch slammed shut, Merida could only look up as she was suddenly in the dark, as her eyes got accustomed to her surroundings the rays of light were visible around the edges of the hatch. It seemed like nothing was down here, Merida readied her bow, just in case when a loud bang came from behind her. Stealthily, Merida walked towards the sound. She realised there was a cage built into the back, she looked through the bars and found nothing but darkness. She wasn't sure where the sound had come from but she knew whatever made the sound was definitely here.

Merida turned for a second when she felt someone or something was watching her. She turned back to find two huge bright blue eyes looking straight at her.

The princess backed off as the eyes followed her from side to side, to Merida's surprise, white scales appeared around the eyes to reveal it was a white dragon. At first glance, the dragon looked like Toothless except being white and it's fins and body were different she thought it looked like a female dragon.

Suddenly the white dragon lunged at Merida but failed. Merida noticed that it was chained to the wall and muzzled. The redhead couldn't help but feel sympathy for the white dragon. Seeing her locked up and tied down, she knew she needed to free her. As the White dragon pulled and struggled to be free from her chains, Merida quickly broke the lock with an arrow. The lock fell to the floor which caught the attention of the white dragon. Growling, the dragon watched as Merida slowly walked in toward the dragon.

"I'm not going to hurt you" Merida reassured "I'm going to release you" but the response she got was a loud roar from the dragon. The Redhead wasn't sure how to calm this dragon down, watching the dragon as it pulled on its chains, it gave Merida a warning look, although she couldn't help but feel that there was something familiar about her. "I know it's the worst thing in life, being cage up, treated like an prop, use by others to they own desires and longing to be free" Merida softly said. The white dragon slowly tilted her head, showing that she was listening. Merida went closer before sitting a few feet away. "You know, I wonder what its like to fly. It's wasn't too long ago that I flew, and it's the most incredible feeling. You love the feeling of flying, don't you?"

The white dragon nodded which made Merida smile. She took a few more steps closer till she was next to the dragon. The dragon looked directly at her. The princess saw the dragons face now up close, it began to make a sound, to Merida's surprise it was a purr, the dragon was purring softly. At that moment, both of them stared into one another's eyes. Merida could see in the dragon's blue eyes an untameable fire and reckless wonder that she had. It was like looking in a mirror, seeing herself in this dragon, she could tell that the creature was thinking the same thing. Merida remembered Hiccup telling her when he met Toothless he too saw himself in the Night Fury.

Suddenly there was a loud bang, they both looked up to find one of Vikings coming through the hatch.

"Let's get out of here" Merida quickly said. She removed the dragons restraints. Luckily Hiccup had given her some lockpicks before they had boarded. She unlocked the chain from the wall when one of the men appeared. Merida and the white dragon hid against the wall as the Viking walked over to the cage.

"I know you're in here girl!" the huge man called out. Merida heard heavy footsteps coming closer. She quickly pulled out an arrow and place it her bow. The white dragon looked over and watched as Merida crept in the dark. "You must have a death wish" he growled. Merida readied herself as the Viking opened the cage door and walked in. "You should be scared; this monster is the deadliest thing on this earth".

"Ha, the only monster here is you!" Merida said bravely as she entered into the light, her bow ready.

"Oh, what pretty little thing, you are. Shame to spoiled that pretty little face of yours" the man sneered although he looked a bit surprised to see a young girl here.

"I would say the same thing but I can't" Merida replied which made the white dragon smirk. Merida kept a straight face, not wanting to show any weakness.

"I surprised you're not dead" the Viking said "Maybe I should get" he stroked his sword gently with evil grin, but before he could come close, Merida shot him in the shoulder. He screamed while Merida fastened another arrow. "Why you little.." the mad man grabbed Merida and caught her around the neck. Merida tried the break free but it was too difficult he squeezed tighter.

She may have passed out if it wasn't for her new friend. The white dragon roared and dived at Merida's attacker. The princess tried to get her breath back as the dragon held the man down. After coughing, Merida grabbed her bow and got to her feet.

"We need to go. He's not worth it" Merida said to the dragon. The white dragon gave one last roar at the frightened man before both girls walked out and locked the cage. Ignoring the shout of the Viking, Merida heard the commotion above them. She looked over to the dragon who was showing her back as if saying "Come on, hop on".

Merida climbed on, holding on as the dragon blasted through the door and flew out. It was hard to hang on with no saddle but the redhead just managed it. They were right above the ship, now the deck had fires dotted around, all of the cages were empty and she could see the dragon riders in the air. Merida tried to see Hiccup, Astrid and Toothless anywhere, then she finally spotted Astrid, reaching to her dragon, but just behind the blonde Viking was a other Viking man. Quickly, Merida place an arrow in her bow. As the white dragon hovered, Merida aim and fired it. The arrow flew and pinned the man's hand against the wall. Astrid turned and punched him in the head.

"Astrid where's Merida?" Hiccup asked looking around worried.

"I think she's fine, come one" Astrid reassured him before they jumped on their dragons. She didn't know how but when she saw the arrow, she had a feeling she knew who'd fired it.

Merida and the white dragon watched the others fly back to land and they followed. They reached the foggy cliffside and landed, Merida slid off the white dragon with ease. They landed the other side of the cliff the others so didn't see them.

"I think it makes us even, thank you" Merida said, her new friend purred then both heard the freed dragons roaring in the distance. Merida could tell the white dragon needed to go. "You need to help, don't you" Merida asked. The white dragon growled as if to say "yes" but the princess could see she was torn. "You're a free spirit, the last thing I want to do is to tie you down" the dragon seemed to physically relax hearing those words. Merida wanted a dragon since meeting Hiccup and Toothless but this dragon was much like her that she couldn't take her. The dragon noticed the sad look on Merida's face. The dragon came closer and licked the girl's cheek, making Merida laugh. "Thanks, we'll meet again one day. That's a promise".

Suddenly a thought came to Merida, she remembered Hiccup's story when he placed his hand on Toothless's head. She also remembered the feeling when she'd done it. Without thinking Merida reached out her hand. The dragon flinched making the princess stop, seeing this, Merida closed her eyes and reached out again. At first, the dragon was unsure what the human was doing but something was drawing her. She slowly pressed her head against Merida's hand. The redhead opened her eyes at the touch. She could feel what she had with Toothless but it was ten times stronger. Both knew they had a bond. An unbreakable bond.

The dragon pulled away and smiled, Merida couldn't stop smiling either. She never thought she'd have a dragon as a friend.

"Merida!" They heard Hiccup shouting. Instantly the white dragon took to the skies. Merida watched as she turned invisible, as if disappearing into thin air.

"Merida" The princess turned to see Hiccup running up to her with the Night Fury behind him. He ran up to her and kiss her. Merida felt his relief and worry in it, she kissed him back to reassure him. "Oh Mer, I was so worried…"

"I'm fine Hic" Merida said rubbing his cheek to calm him. "I managed to escape on one of dragons and landed here".

"Oh, and the dragon?" Hiccup asked and Toothless purred curiously.

"Oh, it flew off" Merida replied which was true.

"I'm just so glad you're ok" Hiccup said before holding on to his princess.

They then heard footsteps and the others joined them.

"Merida, thank the gods you made it" Astrid said.

"Aye, I'm glad as well" Merida answered.

"Well, we better get back home, it's getting late" Hiccup said. They got on their dragons and set off into the evening sky. Later that night, the teens sat around the fire, enjoying meat and telling each other about their rescue.

"You should have seen me firing fireballs at those suckers" Snotlout said proudly.

"Yeah, before you fell off Hookfang before they shot at you" Tuffnut said and Ruffnut chuckled. Snotlout look on sulkily.

"I noticed a few new species of dragons. We definitely need to study them" Fishlegs said to Hiccup.

Merida couldn't help but think of the white dragon when she heard that. She thought about telling them but after meeting her, she knew she wanted to stay hidden. She also knew Hiccup would drop everything and go off to search for her. She didn't want to keep this from him, but even if she wanted to she did not know where to start.

"Merida, what's wrong?" Hiccup asked. She saw Hiccup and Astrid looking concerned.

"Oh nothing, just tired. Too much excitement" Merida reassured them. She felt Hiccup's arm around her, she smiled at him as she rested her head on his shoulder.

"Mer, were you the one who shot that arrow that stopped my attacker" Astrid asked Merida.

"Aye"

"I knew it, thanks. I'm impressed. From that distance, you definitely need to show me your skills tomorrow" Astrid commented.

"You're on" Merida replied. Both girls grinned.

"See, I knew you'd get along" Hiccup said giving a sheepish grin which made both Merida and Astrid giggle.

He was right, Merida was having a wonderful time here and had made great friends. At that moment, Merida noticed an outline in the sky. She recognised it instantly as the white dragon, the dragon flew across the moon before it disappeared again. The princess hoped one day they would meet again.

The quickest and most efficient way to begin producing your own food sustainably:

1-3 guilds (miniature food producing mutually supporting ecosystem).

Cultivate a relationship with local wildlife.

Save seeds.

Grow trees from seed wherever possible.

Fats/oils are needed for stamina and to infuse flavor and heighten nutrition-- suspend soft herbs and spices in fat, divvy into cubes, and freeze. Store and preserve most of your harvests and begin building up your pantry/root cellar. If you want meat, aim for locally caught/hunted fish/game. Brassica and root vegetables both freeze well, and a decent chest freezer requires about 2000 watts to power (just fyi if you're gonna do solar panels). Also: Most cereal grains are a huge pain in the ass to grow/harvest, and are best left to a specialized operation to grow. Someone else is likely gonna have to specialize in textile production (bamboo, hemp, alpaca, wool, etc.)

just finished the book after like maybe 2-ish hours of sleep and two coffee, and I'm not disappointed. That's a great way to end a book, sorta like a full circle, with her visiting some places he's been to, and eventually returning to that diner. the end of fucking Blackbird cracked something wide open in my brain. the scene where she's standing at the crossroads, i think it was, and she sees the street names............

i have respect for people who can root up their lives and transport themselves to a new continent entirely. it's like you're in a subgroup that managed to unlock the other 90% of their brain power

this new book is called Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica, and you can get the pdf for free online if you just google "tender is the flesh read online free." essentially, at its core the premise is that in some nearby future setting, all flesh derived from animals has become deadly to humankind because of a mysterious virus strain making their meat totally inedible. so relying on their produce as we do now would have society facing mass extinction. basically, the world has no choice but to institutionalize and "normalize" human cannibalism as a last ditch hope. and BABY, THEY DO.

it is so incredibly fucked up because the story is not even an interpretation of cannibalism itself. that's not what's supposed to GETCHA. essentially, they start literally breeding human beings to create a sort of secondary species to solely rely on for meat harvesting. it introduces people living (with the mental capacity of domesticated animals) as slaughterhouse cows do. so you're exposed to a sort of conscious separation of people and then humans who are not people and will never be viewed as such. they're meat. the main character is a nihilistic, depressed butcher who's profession is to quite literally slaughter "the meat."

i think what makes it so intense is the fact that it's not a barbaric story where the cannibalism itself is meant to be the big shock affect. it's set years after the initial "transition" to this lifestyle the world has been forced into, and it paints a picture of this sterile dehumanization of society with the presence of specific laws regarding human breeding/a sense of normalcy and acceptance based around the whole thing, etc. really showcases how easily our morals can be stripped from us. a slow, lethargic horror with graphic social commentary.

book contains some HARD ass quotes though. weirdly philosophical.

“He tried to hate all of humanity for being so fragile and ephemeral, but he couldn't keep it up because hating everyone is the same as hating no one.”

"How many heart need to be stored in boxes for the pain to be transformed into something else? But the pain, he intuits, is the only think that keeps him breathing. Without the sadness, he has nothing left."

- he would have three large pins just next to his mountain

- lots of cows, rainbow sheep and pigs with saddles

- "I think the magical Minecraft fairy spawned it into the world?"

- "It's super weird. But I'm gonna kill some cows for their leather"

- and to your shock, a secret door in the mountain opens and Changbin comes running out

- would only be about building

- he would be the first one to have a diamond pickaxe just so he could mine cobblestone faster

- would also get efficiency V just so he could speed run through the mines

- would wander through different biomes for days to collect clay so he could make concrete

- and while you're busy actually playing the game, he would beg for you to pick flowers on your trip so he can dye the concrete different colors

- his first house would be a mansion

- but he would give up half way because he kept falling off the roof and dying

- would forget he is actually playing the game and would get scared when night falls and mobs start spawning in his unlit house

- not like you didn't tell him countless times to put down torches

- but he kept saying they ruined his aesthetic

- but now he keeps dying because mobs are literally waiting at his spawn point, killing him over and over and over again

- and he begs you to set the time to day and kill the mobs for him

- but you just laugh uncontrollably at him because karma really is a bitch

- but in the end, he ends up making an entire city, and invites the others to come and play on the server.

Jisung

- would be just like Chan

- a pure ass baby when it comes to playing minecraft, but super eager to play the game

- his first spawn would be in the middle of the night (because of server)

- and you would try to tell him to not leave the safety of spawn, but he just wouldn't listen

- "Listen, Y/n, I know what I'm doing! I'm a pro at this!"

- and he would run confidently into the night, like the actual idiot that he is

- he wouldn't get too far before he was attacked by all the mobs and got killed

- "Well that was just rude!"

- "Oh my god Jisung, I told you not to do it."

- "Well how was I supposed to know they were going to kill me?!"

- and you can only shake your head at his stupidity

- he would eventually wait until daytime, but unfortunately all of his items would be lost due to despawning

- it's not like either one of you were equipped to go and retrieve his items

- zombies sucked man! And skeletons are the worst!

- but with a new day comes a new adventure and you both head out to find a place to call home

- Jisung would run the entire way, even though he had no food to keep his hunger up

- he also wouldn't be paying attention to where he was going and would fall into a hole

- a very BIG hole

- "Really Jisung?"

- "I couldn't see it!"

- playing with Jisung would be a very challenging task, because he would never learn

- because by the time he had diamond armor and ready to fight the wither, he would have fallen from fifteen cliffs, twenty holes in caves and three ravines

- "That's it! I quit!"

Felix

- You would be so hyped to play with Felix

- You've seen him play other games, so you knew he'd be great at minecraft

- Getting the server had been his idea, the easiest way everyone could play together

- First day of spawn, Felix would already be listing off the things that you would need to accomplish

- wood, cobblestone, iron, seeds, sheep

- it was all just so overwhelming

- by the time you make your first complete set of wooden tools, felix would have iron tools already

- he'd been ten feet underground, digging for more resources while tasking you to find the animals for food, wool and feathers

- easier said then done

- and when he resurfaces and you don't have animals, he would simply sigh and go do it himself

- which would upset you because you would spend hours looking for just one god damn cow

- meanwhile, Felix would take five steps in one direction and come across hundreds of cows!!!

- WHERE DID ALL THESE COWS COME FROM?!?!?

- he'd travel the whole map just to find a jungle to get coco beans

- seriously though, how did he find the fucking jungle?

- it like doesn't exist

- except it does and Minho most likely lives there with all his cats

- Also, there's pandas!!!!!

- Felix would try and tame a panda, even though it's not possible

- When not trying to show off, Felix would be in his crappy little hut (cause hyunjin was still making the city), making cookies and cakes because why wouldn't he?

- at least he shares, unlike someone.....

- Felix would be absolutely unstoppable at the game, while you struggle to get to iron level armor (while trying to keep Jisung alive)

- Felix would have just a big ego

- it's okay though. One strike from Seungmin's sword and he'd be put back into his place

- Revenge is a dish best served Seungmin.

Seungmin

- the worst of the worst

- he would be the one to pretend to not know the game

- but really, he would be a minecraft expert

- read: troll

- every chance he would get, Seungmin would try to do something to ruin your day

- don't ever go mining with him. EVER!

- he would be the one to lead over a creeper to you in a ravine while you're trying to mine diamonds, right next to a lava pool

- the first one to explode wouldn't do any damage, thankfully

- "Don't you dare bring a creeper over here!"

- "I wouldn't."

- somehow, you wouldn't be convinced

- but you decided to trust him

- y/n clown

- you're just mining away at the diamond when a big explosion happens

- and you notice two things

- 1. the diamonds and the surrounding area were blown up

- 2. you were now in the pool of lava, dying

- meanwhile, Seungmin was running away, cackling like the evil little shit that he was

- the holy terror, that's what they would call him

- he would purposefully go out and fight creepers just to gather their gunpowder so he could make dynamite

- no one was safe from him

- except Minho

- because no one knew where he was

I.N.

- Jeongin would spend at least two days researching things for the game before actually playing

- he would want to have some knowledge before walking into hell that was the Stray Kids server

- it's okay though, because everyone loves Jeongin

- really, he wouldn't need to do a thing

- diamond armor, enchanted? check

- enchanted weapons? check

- his own cat and dog? double check

- everyone would do anything for this baby

- but Jeongin isn't one to mooch *coughJisungcough*

- even with all his presents, he would still start with the basics of punching a tree

- while others have found this skills in cooking, mining, falling into holes, redstone and building

- jeongin would be more interested in potions and enchanting

After a successful photoshoot the MCPTF duo took for a detective magazine, Haru bashfuly thanked the camera crew for their work and started to gather his belongings. After a couple of seconds he didn't see Daisuke moving much from his spot at the studio backdrop so he decided to check on him.

Daisuke was still standing there, petting a beautiful cat on his shoulders. He was smiling for the first time in a long time and Haru couldn't help himself but to tease him a little.

"You have a soft spot for kittens, huh Kambe?" "Huh?" "You love animals don't you?" "Don't get the wrong idea. Just because I helped that little boy with a dog back the-" "I get it, no need to get so self-defensive." Haru approached the two and pet the cat as well. Daisuke continued "We had a family cat back in the days but she died from a kidney failure." "I'm sorry to hear that." "Pedigree cats are always difficult to maintain."

He then approached the studio producer and asked "What's the name?" while pointing at the purring ball of fluff. "Oh the name's Kumo-" "No, I meant the name of the breed." "It's a Maine Coon my good sir."

Daisuke took his phone, dialed a number and a lovely lady could be heard on the opposite line "Yes, Daisuke-sama?" "Suzue, do we have all the predispositions that satisfy the adoption of a cat?" "I mean yes but we can't charge a butler to take responsibility for everything. Consider chipping, regular visits to the vet, special shampoos, nail clippers, toothbrushes, specialized treats, eye drops, litter box, toys, climbing frames, there are many factors which need to be taken care of Daisuke-sama. Besides, it's been such a long tim-" "Alright"

Daisuke ended the phone call with a dissatisfied sigh before asking quietly "How much?" to which Haru needed to interfere. "Didn't Suzue-san just tell you not to take a cat home?" and Daisuke gave him an annoyed side-glance "I'll figure something out."

When he arrived to the mansion in his Bentley Continental GT, he glanced at the backseat to address the feline comfortably lying in the fancy pet carrier. "You better not make a sound, understood?" to which the cat just purred in satisfaction. Daisuke felt so silly at this moment, like a little boy hiding a broken vase from his mother.

When he was about to enter the mansion, he accidentally walked on Suzue typing something on her tablet. She looked up and was delighted to see Daisuke coming home safe and sound. Daisuke stood at the doors, one side of his body peering from the corner while the other with a cat was hidden behind the wall. "Welcome back Daisuke-sama, the crack-open naengmyeon is already served on the table, you can take your seat." "Actually, I was planning on doing something else beforehand. Would you please excuse me for a moment?" "Of course." Suzue turned around and waited for him in the dining room. And although Daisuke was very good at keeping his serious demeanor, Suzue still noticed that something was off, with the tone of his voice for instance. It was very faint but Suzue was able to recognize things like this since she knew him so well. Still, she decided not to question him about it.

Daisuke entered his room and laid the pet carrier on the floor. Opening the zipper, the cat jumped out and rolled cozily on his bed. Daisuke held his phone and took a picture. He decided that he couldn't leave it by itself so he went downstairs to the storeroom where he took a litter box and filled it with old newspapers just in case.

After that he joined Suzue for lunch, they talked about Daisuke's photoshoot and Suzue's data she collected on certain people regarding a case. Daisuke told her that the magazine will be published in three weeks or so and Suzue was so happy she promised that she'll be the first costumer to buy it. Daisuke smiled more around Suzue after he let go of his past and threw his father into the jail. Now that all the bad things are behind him, he can finally indulge in his life and pay more attention to Suzue to whom he has yet to make up for all she has done for him over the years. He's thinking about marrying her soon.

While they were eating and pleasantly chatting, a high pitched "mrow" could be heard from the upper floor.

"What was that?" Daisuke let out a dry cough and said "My apologies. It seems that I needed to take a thicker coat before leaving for an appointment." "But.. you always pay attention to things like this." "It's true, but today I was a little late, had other things to do." "Don't overwork yourself, you need to think about your health." "Seems like you need to take better care of me.", he said with a smirk plastered on his lips to which Suzue just laughed and replied "You're so spoiled." and he scooted closer to her whispering "But I like it better when you do it.", and almost kissed her before the two heard a soft thud coming from the above.

"Excuse me for a moment, I need to check what's happening up there. Will be right back.", maybe the moment was ruined but he kissed her forehead nonetheless and went upstairs, leaving her full-hearted and all mushy inside. Her mind was so hazed from the thought of Daisuke kissing her forehead and almost kissing her lips that she didn't register the cause of his concern.

When he arrived to his room he had things to behold; scattered papers and documents all over the floor and the ashtray he typically used after his "adventurous nights with Suzue" was lying on the ground right next to the nightstand. The cat was sitting on his working table licking her paw as if nothing of this concerned her in the slightest. Daisuke sighed in disappointment and put her back in her "baby jail". She already gave him such a hard time but he couldn't be angry with her, she was his baby (yes he already considered himself a dad for god's sake).

Since they already finished with their meals, Suzue went back to her tech room to finish her work and Daisuke took the opportunity to place some meat and water on small plates and bring it to his naughty little friend.

The cat calmed down instantly after she ate and went straight to sleep. Daisuke couldn't believe his own eyes, the audacity, the sheer amount of spoilage this creature showed was unreal. It reminded him so much of himself and he smiled a little. He really missed having a cat.

After he cleaned up and finished his other tasks, he laid on the bed next to her and pet her soft white fur, making her purr louder and snuggle up beside him. Daisuke knows that Suzue is not stupid and that she'll eventually catch up on him sneaking behind her back to give Furry Elise treats (yes her name is Furry Elise, "Für Elise" might be one of Beethoven’s best-known piano pieces and Daisuke knows how to play it too).

And it actually happened that same night. Daisuke was about to fill her small plate with more meat when he met Suzue in the kitchen and she asked him what he was doing. He instantly gave up because it would be so blatantly obvious and incredibly stupid of him to say that he was trying out a new weight-losing tip when no one in this god-forsaken world ate raw chicken.

So he took her to his room and showed her Furry Elise. And although the cat purred really loudly upon seeing them, Suzue wasn't happy about it. In fact, she looked really disappointed and Daisuke needed to apologize. He explained her how it happened and how he wished to have a pet after a really long time. He thought she liked cats as well and therefore concluded that it wouldn't be such a big deal to adopt this cute little feline she loved so much, but apparently it was, so he asked her one more time why she was so reluctant to the whole idea of owning a cat again.

Suzue now shredded a couple of tears and Daisuke was seriously alarmed upon seeing her like this so he carefully cupped her with his hand behind her back and hugged her, asking why she was crying all of a sudden.

"It's just.. I don't want to go though this all over again." "What are you talking about?" "You see, my parents died, your parent died, our previous cat died so soon. I'm living in fear every day and asking myself if something's going to happen to you as well, that's why I'm so excessively worrying about you. And everything I need right now is another sweet creature that I love so much leaving us again. I don't think I'd be able to handle it anymore."

"Suzue.. I never thought..", Daisuke kissed her head and felt a big amount of guilt dawning on him. He was so selfish for only thinking about what made him happy without considering Suzue's emotions. But then he reclaimed his mind and tried to concentrate on saying the right thing. Hopefully he can make her feel better again.

"Suzue, my dear, you shouldn't limit yourself to things that make you happy. It's not healthy. You see, none of us is eternal; neither you, nor me, nor this kitten down there looking at you with so much love in her eyes. But for that very reason that none of us is eternal, we should dedicate our time to one another and make most of it. So please don't deny yourself or your feelings. Instead of dwelling on the sad things, we should concentrate more on our time spent together and be happy, okay?"

Even Daisuke didn't know how he managed to word it this nicely but he did and he realized that both of them were crying by now. They shared a passionate kiss but got interrupted by a small furball rubbing on their feet like it wanted to share a hug as well and Suzue smiled through tears.

She squatted and carefully took the cat in her hands. "What's her name?" "Furry Elise." Suzue now needed to laugh so much and she hadn't even recovered from her previous emotional outburst.

"I love it, you're really good at this.. it's.. the song you used to play for me all the time before you went studying overseas."

He looked at her with so much love and adoration at this exact moment.

"Know what? I think I'm falling for you all over again, Mr. Millionaire." Daisuke swore, his heart was full that night and no money could ever compare to this feeling.

3. Feeding your turtles: What do pet turtles eat? Most pet turtles are omnivores, which means they consume both meat and vegetation. Animal products, vegetables, and fruits should all be included in an adult pet turtle's diet.

Younger pet turtles , between the ages of 7 and 10, require a greater proportion of animal-based meals. The amount of animal and vegetable food your pet turtlerequires is determined on its species.

Sources of animal food Processed pet meals like drained sardines, turtle pellets, and trout chow are examples of animal-based food sources for turtles. Cooked chicken, beef, and turkey are also good options.

Moths, crickets, shrimp, krill, feeder fish, and worms are examples of live prey. To assure quality and safety, purchase insects from a pet store or an undeveloped area, or cultivate them yourself.

Sources of plant food Leafy greens like collards, dandelions, and mustard greens should be the main sources of plant-based diet for your pet turtle. Some of these veggies, such as chives, parsley, and spinach, have high amounts of oxalates, which should be avoided.

Apples, cantaloupe, bananas, berries, and mangoes are examples of fruits. Non-toxic aquatic plants such as water hyacinth, water lettuce, and duckweed can also be fed to them.

Feed an adult pet turtle once or twice a day, and a juvenile turtle one to two times a day, depending on the species. The amount of food your pet turtle should eat is determined on its species.

As a general guideline, only let your pet turtle consume as much as they can in approximately 20 minutes, especially with pellets and other non-living items, and then remove any leftovers.

When it comes to eating habits, sea turtles and land turtles have distinct tastes. Because aquatic turtles can only eat when submerged, you'll need to put food in their water tank. Place your land turtle's food on a flat, firm surface, such as a rock or grass, if you have one. Many turtle owners like to cut a variety of veggies to feed their pets so that they don't simply consume one type and miss out on other, more nutritious plants.

Pet turtleshave different nutritional needs depending on their species. Research the nutritional requirements of your pet turtles species, and if you have any questions or concerns, contact your veterinarian.

Pet turtles, like humans and many other creatures, may become fat. Overfeeding your turtle can cause them to gain weight, making it difficult for them to withdraw their arms and legs inside their shell.

To minimise overfeeding, make sure your turtle has plenty of room to roam about. Tanks for turtles up to 6 inches long should be 30 gallons at a minimum, and up to 125 gallons for pet turtles over 8 inches long.

Heat lamps for tortoises and turtles come in a range of wattages, but it's vital to figure out what bulb wattage the cage requires to maintain the proper temperature. Larger enclosures often require greater wattage bulbs, whereas smaller enclosures require less wattage to maintain proper temperatures.

Aside from the mercury vapour bulb, which emits UVB rays, there are ceramic heat emitters and ordinary reptile heat lamp bulbs in various wattages. Ceramic heat emitters produce just heat and do not produce light, and they screw into a clamp light.

These are wonderful since they last a long time, are less brittle than light bulbs, and may be used at any time of day or night because they emit no light. In addition to heat, regular reptile heat bulbs can emit white, red, or blue/purple light.

It's officially been a month since we first landed in the Mother City. I sometimes have to remind myself we're in Africa! In many ways, it's just like home. We go grocery shopping, commute, get gas and do laundry just as we would at home. In other ways, it's quite different and even exotic. This past weekend, we visited a lion sanctuary we drive by regularly, definitely not something that happens at home! 

This sanctuary, Drakenstein, rescues lions being kept in undesirable circumstances. Some were being mistreated in zoo's or circus's, one was captured and survived a hunting farm. Another was kept as a pet on the balcony of a 14th floor apartment in Beirut, we learned Lebanon doesn't have any laws against keeping wild animals as pets. For a variety of reasons, these lions cannot be released into the wild even after rehabilitation, instead they (some) are brought to this sanctuary. Another note about this sanctuary, they do not breed lions, only care for those rescued from harm and there is no physical interaction with the lions, just viewing. Needless to say, we felt we could visit without much guilt. I've read countless accounts of sanctuaries that don't take care of their animals so we wanted to be sure we didn't inadvertently support one of these locations. All this to say it was amazing!!! Of course neither of us had seen a lion in real life let alone up close before. Talk about BIG cats!! Drakenstein currently houses 29 lions 😮

We didn't think much about it and visited at 4pm which is the hottest part of the day, so most of them were lounging in the shade but this guy, Shumba, got up just as we were about to leave and it was magnificent.

Yes, I'm aware he was just walking, it was magnificent!!! We were told they feed the lions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday so Brian and I agreed we must go back for that soon. I never thought I'd want to see a lion eat up close but now I feel I must! They also have a few white lions, which are quiet rare. For some reason most of those were chillin out in the sun. Brian got this picture of another group there with us.

African families visit lion sanctuaries too! You definitely don't see wild animals walking around the streets like it's normal. The girl taking her selfie is my favorite 🙂 

Visiting the sanctuary was fantastic! I'm quite excited to go back! There is a cheetah sanctuary nearby as well, we'll be visiting soon!

We were also invited to Braai this weekend and had a blast! This South African family lives on a vineyard and invited us into their home. It was absolutely wonderful!! Being in wine-country, I've felt we're missing a whole side of this country from what we've experienced. As a comparison, wine country in California is not exactly the best representation of the country as a whole or even the state. I mentioned this to a friend and he put together this Braai to show us his side of South Africa. For me, it was like being back home with my family. We're all talking over each other and constantly laughing not to mention the music blasting and everyone dancing! If you've ever been invited to the Taylor's for a dinner party, you know to have a snack before because we won't be eating until late (we’re having too much fun to remember cooking) but there will be lots of drinks in the meantime and the wait is worth it! We had the most amazing meal yet. Pap which is quite similar to grits (better in my opinion) and Chakalaka which Brian said is very much like Brunswick stew. Of course meats; boerewors, lamb, beef and chicken. It was all delicious but the best part were the people. Everyone is family and after just a few minutes, we are too. Kids are running around and the adults are cracking jokes constantly. Even when they're speaking Afrikaans you're laughing along because you know someone's being roasted! I was told I have African rhythm, which I take as the ultimate compliment and had a full on tickle fight with some of the kids.

Of all the things we've done in country so far, this was my absolute favorite evening. Anytime you are welcomed into someone's home and given a meal, it's a heartwarming experience. For me, it was so much like home. We already have plans to go out dancing soon and I can't wait!! Of course, the view from their backyard was absolutely stunning.

One month down, two to go. I can only hope we continue to have as much fun as we have been 🙂 This week we move up to Stellenbosch, perfect timing for the official start of harvest!

Maybe, eventually, I’ll get around to talking about all the wine we’ve had! No shortage of wine, just the brain cells to write about it 😘
