#ie Luffy letting go and needing to be stronger

You are deep in the paint about One Piece and me and my datemate watched OPLA recently so I will tell you this thing I said while we were talking about Shanks.
He said something to the effect of Shanks is CRAZY STRONG, perhaps one of the strongest, and has some special ability that allows him to tell anyone weaker than him to GTFO, so it's a fucking mystery why he lost his arm when by all rights he never needed to lose the arm. He's still the strongest without it, but why'd he lose it in the first place if he didn't have to???
So I replied, after like a minute of thought, "Because he might not need the arm, but Luffy needed him to lose his arm". Luffy needed the lesson he was going to learn for Shanks giving up that piece of himself to save Luffy's life. He needed to see the stakes and be given that lesson of actions, consequences, collateral damage, giving pieces of yourself for the sake of your crew/family/nakama.
Furthermore, with Sanji and Luffy being connected through "my mentor/surrogate father literally gave up a piece of himself to save my life", stands to logic that Sanji also needed that lesson in the narrative sense. These older guard pirates passed along something vital, giving up something that they don't need to live fulfilling lives but would be seen as incredibly important, to teach the next generation something and give them tools with which to do better.
I don't go here (I don't have the spoons for the entirety of One Piece tbh), but I liked the conclusion I came up with and wanted to share it in the hopes that you might like it too. I don't think I'm breaking any new ground here tbh but as an outsider, it was neat to think about.
I SURE AM, BUDDY X'''D Thanks for popping in! 👀 I got thoughts (and manga screencaps since you won't read it anyway, FREE REIN:
Hm. I mean point taken, but I mean...even the strongest people aren't infallible? Even IF Shanks has Conquerer's Haki (the power in question) which is something very special someone has to be born with and trained to use to its fullest, that doesn't mean it'll fix everything. Also like. He's also been shown to kinda....lose control of it when nervous or on edge.
Tumblr media
Like my dude did not have to do this. He mentions later he doesn't like being on different territory or something LOL (he's visiting a different powerful pirate leader here).
Anyway to rescue Luffy at that time, he had to act FAST and was probably SCARED FOR HIM so like. Maybe didn't have the time to make the Haki register? It came down to losing Luffy or bodily thrusting his own arm forward to block the bite from the sea king....and well. Shanks has 2 arms. Only one Luffy. The choice was easy. Even upon losing the arm he didn;t seem upset by it really.
Tumblr media
For the sake of the new era he says....the face of it being Luffy himself. And yea the wording really is "I gave it up" and him clearly having no regrets.
STILL I think you do have a point, this was VERY important for Luffy to learn. This same kid stabbed his own face to prove he was "manly enough" to be a pirate (so Shanks wouldn't leave without him....like his brother Ace....like his brother Sabo, to an extent, through "death" in his case) so the realization that being a pirate....would not be easy. There would be sacrifice. There would be pain. But also in a way, it was Shanks showing how important Luffy was to him. This, and passing down that straw hat much to big for Luffy....yeah.
It's clear then he's not ready. Not yet. It's with these parting gifts that Luffy is finally able to let Shanks go, and improve himself so he's strong enough to protect others, so they don;t have to do for him what Shanks did. Luffy learned to live, and while Shanks's sacrifice was devastating to Luffy, he took it to heart to keep going and grow stronger. And yea, that Nakama is just that important, more than limbs. More than life.
NOW SANJI ON THE OTHER HAND....similar but different. Luffy and Sanji were very lonely kids, but for different reasons. Luffy was clingy to anyone who showed him anything close to kindness, while Sanji....puffed up like a scared cat. Without going deep into details, he's from an extremely abusive family that beat into him he's not worth anything because he's weak. Especially from his father. So when Zeff gives him all the food, and sacrifices his own leg....well...
Tumblr media
"Why did you do that for me?! I never gave you a reason to be kind to me!!!" And Zeff responds with their shared dreams of the All Blue...but I also feel like it's just. Sanji is a kid. He's just a kid. Again a face of the new generation to come. Zeff had his chance to search for the All Blue and be a pirate, but Sanji's life is just beginning. I'm sure that fueled his decision too.
But unlike Luffy, this just made Sanji cling harder. In a way he gave up his dream to support Zeff, out of guilt, out of a sense of duty and kindness he'd....not really experienced and didn't know what to do with. And Zeff probably allowed it for awhile, because goodness Sanji is just a kid, and he needed someone to help him grow and learn.
But it took Luffy to come along, bringing "I will live for you" to challenge Sanji's "I will die for you" conclusion.
Tumblr media
Which uh. Didn't really fix Sanji's self sacrificial nature, but it HELPED, lmao. Eventually he was able to let go of suppori=ting the Baratie to finally chase his dream...as long as he doesn't die for a crewmate in the process hsdhfhdsk
So YEA IDK how much their mentors/father figures knew/thought about their sacrifices, but there sure were willing choices to give up their limbs for the upcoming generation/era, no matter what. I loved Zeff emphasizing that to Garp in OPLA, I think that's extremely important and a huge theme to One Piece in general. Cycles, power, and how many conflicts rise from powerful forces refusing to let go of their power, thus suffocating the new generations (the World Government smacking down so hard on the age of pirates).
Shanks and Zeff gave their support and protection to ensure these kids could live their fullest lives, and I think that's beautiful!

I SEE TALK OF ONE PIECE AND POKEMON AND I REALIZED
I made trainer cards for ASL months ago, but never explained my choices
Also i love Pokemon and like to go very into the lore so I HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE YOU SEEK
Tumblr media
Ace gets Rapidash, Marowak, Wailord, Kyogre, Houndoom, and Ninetails
Rapidash are known for their speed, but they're also known for how picky they are with riders. This pokemon won't let anyone on it's back that it doesn't trust. If someone tries? They'll burn them. But the flames won't burn those they trust.
Marowak is known for grieving the loss of it's mother in previous evolutions.
Wailord CAUSE WHITEBEARD
Kyogre is based on an orca and Ace is very much like orcas. They're one of the smartest creatures in the whole world with family relationships stronger than even ours. Bonds that can't be broken right here.
Houndoom are feared just because of who they are. Lots of people in pokemon believe they're the grim reapers. AND NOW THAT I'M THINKING ABOUT IT Absol would have also fit here because they're believed to always foreshadow something bad happening and also feared
And Ninetails are the epitome of vengeful
Tumblr media
Sabo gets Charizard, Farfetch’d, Salamence, Honchkrow, Hydregon, and Lucario
Charizard are very much known to loose control of their fire when they get angry. They’ve accidentally burned down whole forests before. This is also a pokemon who’s trust needs to be earned.
Farfetch’d will search far and wide for the perfect leek stalk (lol like sabo’s pipe) to wield. They’ll even fight each other over them! That stalk is their weapon and they use it like a sword.
Salamence had such a strong desire to fly (ie. be free. since flight is always associated with freedom) that they triggered their own mutation in the species to allow huge red wings to grow!
Honchkrow are leaders, and they look a lil fancy too! Whenever they need help, they’ll call all the Murkrow to their aide (Sabo calling other revs for help if he ever needs it) and command them like leaders.
Hydregion is another that’s known for loosing it’s temper. They are violent and will attack anything that moves basically. They also eat a shit ton of food.
Lucario (MY PERSONAL FAV) are defenders of justice. They are very well known for their natural sense of justice and very loyal to those they trust. Like in the movie Lucario got from the series, he was loyal to his trainer/friend even long after the man had died. They’ll always try and do what’s right and defend others.
Tumblr media
Luffy gets Lapris, Sunflora, Monferno, Ambipom, Scraggy, and Pyroar
Lapris are the ships of the sea! They’re known to ferry people across oceans and are very often used for water travel!
Sunflora cause cmon the boy is like walking sunshine. They always are more active and very playful when the sun is out. They’ll chase it even!
Monferno can stretch and control the size of the flame on it’s tail, kinda like Luffy’s devil fruit! They’ll use it both to keep opponents away or assist in fighting them! They especially like to jump around, staying very active and fast when they attack
Ambipom are both the sweetest and most trouble-making monkeys you’ll find. When they really like, they’ll wrap both their tails around you in a tight hug! They love exploring and will search far and wide for the perfect trees to rest in
Scraggy don’t know when to quit. They’ll fight anything and everything, even if it’s bigger than them. It hink it’s said that if you even look at them the wrong way they’ll charge with a headbutt. They can also stretch themselves for defense! Again, like Luffy’s devil fruit.
Pyroar are just like any typical lion. And while the only thing they may have in common with Luffy is that they like to eat meat raw, that’s not why I put one with him. Shanks is associated with lions by Oda! And Luffy always has a bit of the redhead with him~

With the Wano Arc, One Piece is Finally Nearing its Endgame
It’s been clear for a long time that One Piece has been building up to something big. For as much as people joke about its length, One Piece has always been the type of story with a clear end goal in mind. Eiichiro Oda himself commented that the time-skip was about Wan Pisu’s halfway point, and while Oda’s estimates haven’t always been accurate (he originally expected One Piece to last about five years and that ship sailed almost twenty years ago), Wano is proof that One Piece is nearing its endgame.
Just consider how much time the series has spent setting it up. We first met Kin’emon back at Punk Hazard, which was also where Law first mentioned Kaido as the alliance’s target. And now, seven years later, Kaido is in reach. This isn’t like Whole Cake Island where Big Mom was more of an obstacle to rescuing Sanji than someone to be defeated — defeating Kaido is the entire reason the Straw Hats are in Wano. Even though Orochi is nominally the main target in Wano, he’s not much more than a puppet for Kaido. He obviously couldn’t have come to power without Kaido’s backing, and defeating him doesn’t mean much as long as Kaido’s still around. There’s no getting around it: Kaido has to go down. But, Kaido is no ordinary villain.
Ever since the Four Emperors were first mentioned at Water 7, One Piece has always been clear that they’re at the top. Whitebeard — the first we saw in action — was introduced as the strongest man in the world, and proceeded to prove that by going toe-to-toe with people even Luffy didn’t stand a chance against. Even as recently as Whole Cake Island, Big Mom proved to be more of a force of nature than an opponent to fight. But things are different now. Luffy’s beaten Warlords, other pirate captains, and even an Emperor’s top fighter. The next step from there is fighting an Emperor directly. Once that happens, we’ll know that One Piece is really nearing its conclusion.
Think about it. Part of what makes One Piece so great is the cast’s visible progression over the years. Luffy’s gone from being proud of his 30,000,000 berry bounty to taking down people worth over 100,000,000 with little trouble. Each major arc showcases Luffy and his crew getting just a little stronger, just a little better at what they do. Each improvement puts them just a little closer to the One Piece, however long that journey actually is. So what happens when they finally reach the top? That’s when you know the One Piece is finally within their grasp.
Then again, fighting an Emperor is completely different from anything the Straw Hats have done before. Luffy tried doing things his usual way — finding the main enemy and charging off to fight them — but Kaido isn’t a typical foe. We’ve seen Luffy lose before, but usually because his opponent either had some special ability he didn’t know how to counter (ie. Crocodile) or because he was already injured or otherwise didn’t have a chance to go all out (ie. Kuma). None of that happens here. Luffy hammers Kaido with punches from Boundman — the same form that matched Katakuri and outmatched Doflamingo — only for Kaido to get right back up and end the fight in one blow. That blow is a statement: Emperors aren’t going down that easily.
The Wano Arc embodies this sentiment: Things are different now. The Straw Hats aren’t just a scrappy little crew fighting their way up the ladder. They’re a famous pirate crew that’s nearing the top of the ladder. And things don’t work the same way at the top. You can’t just charge in and win through sheer determination when your opponent is a monster like Kaido. So much of the arc thus far has been spent preparing for the right moment to attack Kaido and Orochi to catch them off guard. Kin’emon’s plan is necessary now, since Kaido won’t be going down by brute force alone. But even if his plan goes off without a hitch, they still need someone capable of fighting Kaido, meaning Luffy has to improve fast. There aren’t any more enemies he can beat on the way, no steps between him and Kaido, just one massive leap to prove he’s able to take on an Emperor.
No matter how things end up, Wano is do-or-die time. If Luffy wants to keep advancing (and we know he does), he’ll have to surpass Kaido. And if he does, that’ll be a game-changer like nothing we’ve seen before. Look at all the upheaval that happened after Whitebeard’s death. The Navy went through massive rebuilding and restructuring, new pirates went out to snap up Whitebeard’s territory, and Blackbeard ascended to the level of Emperor. If Kaido goes down, the same thing is likely to happen, only Luffy will be at the center of everything this time around. Once that happens, we’ll know the One Piece is in sight.
Though One Piece still has plenty left (the subplots from the Reverie alone will probably take years to resolve), the events since Luffy’s arrival at Wano are proof that the endgame is approaching. The One Piece may not be within Luffy’s grasp just yet, but it’s closer than ever before.
What do you think of Wano so far? Are you excited to see One Piece nearing the end? Let us know in the comments!

Mine from Akame Ga Kill.  She's bratty, self-centered, thinks her word is law, and in the end she suddenly falls for Tatsumi and dies dispute calling him useless and unprofessional throughout the whole series. Plus we're supposed to sympathize with her for being bullied as a child and feel that that justifies her anger towards Tatsumi, but it doesn't.
Takagi from High School of the Dead. She's pretty much a richer, taller, more spoiled, weaker version of Mine. The main difference is she doesn't end up loving anyone nor become likable in the end. She complains 24/7 particularly during the worst times, constantly reminds everyone that she's the smartest, and she's so weak and useless she constantly needs help from Hirano but proceeds to call him a fat nerd. She's also aware that he'll do anything for her because she's hot. At least Mine has somewhat of a justification for her personality, but Takagi's justification was she was too rich, too smart, and mommy and daddy weren't around enough because they had jobs.
Heroku from Maken-Ki. She has a kind heart and is very powerful, but what makes her annoying is the fact that she proceeds to bully and beat up Takeru for liking other girls out of jealousy. The worst part is she refuses to confess her feelings to him! Instead, she hits him every time he so much as hugs Inaho, forces him to join the security committee, and continues to whine about it. She doesn't even feel that what she's doing is wrong, plus she constantly denies having feelings for Takeru. I get that telling your best friend you love them is hard, but being a bully won't make them love you. Plus it's sad to see such a strong female character act so petty over a boy who barely deserves her.
Yuka from Elfen Lied. She pretty much had the exact same problem as Heroku. The main difference is she's in love with her cousin! Poor Kouta is completely oblivious to her rage because even he realizes it's wrong to be in love with your cousin! She's a nice person, and you want to like her but come on. Of all the men in the world, you choose your cousin then beat him up for liking and being kind to a girl that's prettier than you? Lucy may have been a murderous psychopath, but at least she was nice when she was around Kouta.
Excalibur from Soul Eater. If you've seen the original anime, I don't have to explain why he's annoying.
Amelia from The Devil is a Part-Timer. She's loud, insecure, and extremely stubborn. Not to mention the petty jealousy she had towards a 16-year-old girl for having bigger boobs than her. She constantly invades other people's privacy and constantly reminds everyone that she's the hero. We get it, you're the good guy, or at least that's what anime forces us to believe. Compared to Satan she's really unlikable. She actively tries to make Satan the bad guy, even though he is, whenever he tries to do something good. Not to mention she constantly complains and ridicules him at the most inappropriate times, even when he's saving her life. I know she has every right to hate him, but she doesn't need to be a self-centered bitch about it.
Ritsu from Mob Psycho 100. He's jealous of his older brother for no reason other than the fact that he has something that he doesn't have. Ritsu had everything Mob didn't. He was at the top of his class, had tons of friends, was athletic, and the favorite child. But he was so set on having psychic powers he didn't even know how good he had it. Instead, he acted like the world was unfair to him and was completely oblivious to how impractical psychic powers are. Sure they're cool but so what? You can't get good grades nor get a high paying job using telekinesis. Plus he has no idea about all the ridicule and alienation Mob had to go through. Ritsu didn't even think about why he wanted them other than to be superior towards his brother who wished he has everything Ritsu had. In the end, he got what he wanted, but that still want enough. He was still jealous that Hanazawa was way stronger than him.
Homura from Puella Magi Madoka Magica. She basically said fuck everyone else and repeatedly turned back time for the sake of 1 person. Yes, Madoka was her first and only friend, but come on! Are you that pathetic and desperate to spend the rest of your life with that one person you completely ignore the billions of other people? It also doesn't help that she acts like an emo throughout the whole series. What do you call a person who repeatedly does the same thing expecting a different result: insane. Homura is insane, and in denial thinking that she can outsmart a being who is basically an immortal god. She even refuses to listen to Kyubey after he point-blank told her the only reason Madoka is so powerful and is destined to turn into a witch is because Homura kept turning back time.
Sakura from Naruto. Pretty much the center of everything wrong with that show. She's whiny, almost completely useless for the majority of the show's runtime, and continues to throw herself at a boy who beats almost killed her. If she had the slightest bit of sense and gave Sasuke the beating he deserves and dumped his emo ass she would be so much better.
Luffy from One Piece.  Yes, that's right it said it. The beloved Monkey D. Luffy is annoying as shit. He constantly gets stronger without any training and dumb luck. I'm aware he trained with his grandfather and Rayleigh but in between that he has little to no training and yet he somehow was about to beat people who are seasoned warriors. For example when he first used second and third gear. When did he learn any of those? Luffy excels at the "because he's the main character he always wins" cliche. He's also the worst captain ever. Flowing him is like following a toddler. He doesn't take any of his crew's advice to consideration and is the sole reason some of the Straw Hats almost died and constantly get dragged into unnecessary conflicts. The only reason any of the Straw Hats follow him is because he saved their lives. Other than that he has no sense of direction nor any good leadership qualities other than that fact he possesses the conqueror's spirit, yet another convince he gets because he's the main character. Let's not forget that that most beautiful woman in the world is completely infatuated with him, but he's not attracted to her and called her by the wrong name the first day they met, kind of a dick move. Also, I can't be the only on who hates his voice.
Bonus: Every female character from Ladies vs. Butlers
