Insektober day 22: Masquerade! (sorry its late)
Queen Bakrakra and General Lukanus at the masquerade ball. Lukanus wishes to dance with the queen but alas, he's a never been much of a dancer and she hasn't moved her legs this much in years.... they'd be a disaster on the dance floor.
So instead Bakrakra will stand and watch her subjects like ants, while Lukanus scours the premises for a certain ant! (FULGOR!)
This piece takes place at the same time as day 7! Same masquerade ball. The whole Masquerade thing is an episode of my rewrite (still a WIP....) and @dnpanimationstudioclone came up w the idea for it! It's meant to go between Koa the Frog and The Reskue, a transitional state between the Kruds being unable to put a face on the Verigreen threat and the Kruds recognizing Fulgor as the main threat of Verigreen resistence (and Aelia, but they don't really take her seriously since they see her as a weak butterfly)

Statements Of The Day 10/27/2023 12:05AM
"Awwwww such a lil Seraphim babyyyyyu"
I really like reading Idolomantises webtoons. The latest chapter in Monsters and Girls is kind of sweet and cute, like most their comic strips but this got an audible reaction. It's just so cute.

I think in a vacuum idolomantises designs and art is decent and I wouldn't blame any of his fans for disagreeing with my criticism regarding it , considering he managed to get his bug comic off webtoon canvas and be "official" (idk exactly how that works or proper terms for it?) , he clearly worked hard for it. Regardless of my personal opinions, anyone who can find the motivation to commit to a long term project and put themselves out there deserves respect for that at the very least
It just my first exposure to him was from his redesigns and criticisms regarding Vivziepop , so I can’t help but compare the standards he sets onto other artists (mostly vivziepop) and than now that applies to his own art
I won’t deny there's some bias on my end when discussing his work. Not because I think Vivziepop is an artistic genius who can't do no wrong (my god has she done a lot wrong) , but it's incredibly fascinating to me how idol is capable of going in depth regarding giving criticism to Vivziepop's work
and then you look up his actual art and writing , and it's not only suffering from similar issues to Vivziepop's work, but it's got even more glaring issues I'm frankly surprised Idol didn't spot before posting?
I will say I think Monsters and girls is the better comic compared to Bugtopia , primarily because it’s not meant to be as plot focused and works more as a gag strip collection. I think with that one idol either needs to make the lore of monsters and girls actually relevant to the characters and have the art reflect said lore ,(just look up my post discussing Sera’s design for why) or just throw it all out the window and be more weird with it. Like the looney tunes logic of “who cares so long as it’s entertaining” but it’s lesbians instead of drag queens
With idol’s bug comic however, it flip flops to a story that you’d expect for a young child (like Dot trying to find a cake or a bunch of kids going to school) to discussing the sex life of random characters with no lead way or transition, it just randomly does that throughout
Obviously you can have children characters in stories for older audiences, even ones for just adults. The problem is the tone feels extremely different when idol swifts focus between the characters
It’s like if in the Rugrats the babies had their normal baby adventures, but then we switched focus to the adults and suddenly they’re discussing BDSM and their fetish preferences. It’d just be genuinely bizarre to do, even if said hypothetical Rugrats example was an adult only cartoon
and like I got a lot of problems with the world building but I’m just gonna leave it at this: How come tiny little insects that exist in a world with normal sized animals (and presumably humans) , somehow have human food and objects, such as New York styled cities, that’s insect size? Why isn’t the comic taking advantage of the fact these characters are bugs and using that to make creative environments to enhance the world building/lore (like homes inside of trees or cell phones as TVs?) ???

Creature Awaits #227
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry. Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )
Today we begin a special series for October.. "Cute…but Deadly" : )

The Devil's Flower Mantis
Scientific Name: Idolomantis diabolica
Region: Central eastern Africa
Size: Up to about 5.1" (~13cm) long if female, about 3.9" (~10cm) if male
Interesting Notes: Though not harmful to humans, this gorgeous mantis is quite deadly to any prey lured in by its near-perfect disguise. Possibly the largest floral mimic mantis, this swift and precise hunter stays perfectly motionless until any enticed insect flies close enough to strike at. Once locked in its inescapable grasp, the mantis then uses its powerful mandibles to quickly decapitate and consume it before returning to await its next target.

Insektober day 1: Weather!
Prince Max and Queen Bakrakra enjoy a warm snowy day. Warm? Yeah warm! The snow is rainbow because it's weird warm snow generated by the Sky Breaker machine! I remember watching the original episode 10 and thinking it was strange that Bakrakra DIDNT have any opinion of the snow but Krabo considered it a failure anyways. Like wouldn't Bakrakra be stoked abt this weather??? it's warm AND it's fun! Maybe she'd be a little miffed or conflicted since its so colorful... but who cares abt that when it's exactly what she needed!!! idk. Wasted opportunity IMO. I think the rainbow snow's pretty OP.
So in my actual drawing Bakrakra has been sitting outside in the snow for a while and is very uncertain abt the whole thing, I guess reconsidering her thoughts abt... everything tbh. Isn't it interesting how your mind clears when it feels like you're in less pain than usual? That's why I think the rainbow snow's OP-- if Bakrakra was just operating at her proper temperature she'd have a better grasp on her kingdom and the wants and needs of the Kruds, PLUS the Kruds wouldn't have to fuel the Hypotherm anymore so it'd be a net positive for everyone... except for KRABO, because he'd lose his control over the other Kruds that way. GOD now that I think abt it Bakrakra's situation is way more interesting than I expected it to be upon my first few viewings of Insektors... they rlly could've explored that well I think!
I don't think Bakrakra is a particularly compassionate person nor do I think she has much regard for the Verigreens, but unlike Krabo, she is willing to put aside her hatred for them when it benefits her directly or indirectly (wow what a saint LOL), whereas Krabo is so stubborn he would never accept help from the Verigreens even if his life depended on it. So I suppose even though Bakrakra is often made out to be the more imposing threat, Krabo is the largest threat to Joyceland as a whole and, honestly also the Kruds themselves. I just thought that was fascinating tbh!
Anywayz I hope u liked my post and my ramblings today. I like Bakrakra a lot! And I am doing Insektober again just like I did last year, funny random color schemes included!

Devil's Flower Mantis
Idolomantis diabolica, a species belonging to the monotypic genus Dolomantis in the family Empusidae. Commonly known as the devil's flower mantis or giant devil's flower mantis, it's not just large but possibly the biggest flower-mimicking mantis out there!
This impressive mantis can reach up to 13 cm (5.1 in) for females and about 10 cm (3.9 in) for males. Native to Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Somalia, Tanzania, South Sudan, and Uganda, it's a true marvel of nature with its threat display adorned in magnificent colors – a stunning blend of red, white, blue, purple, and black.
The Devil's Flower Mantis, beyond its size, showcases a fascinating floral mimicry. While maintaining the basic anatomical structure typical of the Mantodea order, the species has adapted its morphology to enhance its ability to mimic flowers.
