It's a Wonderful Life Ch. 1: New in Town
Rus doesn't know the first thing about farming, but he knows if he spends one more second at his soul-sucking corporate job in the city he will probably kill someone and then himself.
He's willing to try anything once.
Notes:
Heavily inspired by all the farming Sim games (Harvest Moon ofc, also Story of Seasons, Stardew Valley, Coral Island)
This follows some of the familiar paths you've seen in such games and will end up being a harem of Papyri for our main character Rus lol. As the story progresses I might take player suggestion what Rus does next or who he romances the most, I think it would be really fun to see everyone's ideas so feel free to tell me in the comments everything you wanna see and I might use it!!
Characters we meet and their roles will be in the end notes of each chapter. I can also make notes about likes/dislikes and stuff if you guys want.
Heavily based also on my own HarvestTale, which has always been an undertale/farming sim crossover idea. Visit the Tumblr for it! @harvesttale
Only difference is I've taken Stretch and made him the MC instead of his usual role in town. Some other things have been tweaked a little and I added Wine and Coffee.
First chapter word count: 2210

YES.
ALL OF THIS.
THIS is why this film still hits so hard after all these years.
It’s not some sugary BS about “you can think yourself out of suicidal depression by just learning to appreciate what you’ve got”.
It’s about the fact that people who work really fucking hard for their communities experience active, targeted, criminal pushback from exploiters.
About the fact that caring, in all its manifestations, is incredibly physically and mentally taxing and is often done by disabled people - YES, George Bailey is a disabled protagonist. His impairment prevents him from military service and actively causes him chronic pain that, as a person who lives with it, *will* affect his energy levels and fatigue constantly.
Notably, IAWL actually has a bunch of disabled characters. Not only is George disabled, but I’d put money on his uncle who loses the money being ADHD and very possibly having other learning disabilities and the film *actively* flagging that fact to the audience, even if it doesn’t necessarily know what ADHD is.
Which casts a whole new light on its principal villain being disabled. Instead of Old Man Potter being a flat caricature of “disability = evil”, what he *actually* is is a fantastic example of the fact that marginalisation in one axis does not prevent someone being an active oppressor - and wealth and class privilege, in particular, tend to mean a person actively acting to oppress other people who share their marginalisation in order to privilege the interests of their own class as a whole. Sometimes even damaging their own individual interests to do so.
It’s also super interesting that the *material* miracle in the film is not the appearance of an angel to show George what life would have been like if he had never existed, but the *community solidarity* that saves him from jail and his family from penury. The supernatural intervention can change his *mindset*, and that is *incredibly* important, given it *literally* stops him killing himself, but the *material* intervention is mutual aid from his own community that he has given so much to.
Which is incredibly radical as a message. It’s not saying “faith is worthless”; it’s saying “faith can be an incredibly important factor in creating resilience in moments of despair, but we can’t, and *need not*, wait for a supernatural miracle to save us; we have the capacity to save ourselves and each other in our hands right now”.

So I read in your newest fic’s (which IS INCREDIBLE btw you never miss 🩷) notes that you originally conceptualized the fic as being in the vein of “it’s a wonderful life” and I’m wondering…….how do you think that would have gone? Just curious 💕
Ty!! I note that I haven't seen it for quite a few years so it would have been a fairly basic comparison bc I forget the specifics of the context in IAWL, but yes... The spirit of Jordie (or possibly just Kaz's brain pulling a Really Complex Hallucination, I think the idea was it's like a fucking weird dream after he either nearly drowns or gets beaten up) pulls up, and says Hey Kaz Want To Know What Would've Happened If You HAD Died and Kaz is like. 'Um not really actually' but it's too late. I do have a bunch of notes app scraps of it, that I repurposed slightly for the current fic, so I'll paste em under the cut for your perusal. Ultimately I found this way of doing things a bit unsubtle but it was very interesting!
"Is this some guilt complex shit?" said Kaz.
"If you want it to be."
"No, I don't." Kaz wriggled out of the way and got to his feet. "I'm just going to—"
***
The sheet was wrenched away.
Kaz had seen plenty of death in the Barrel and on the Barge, and he had known who was going to be under the sheet. It didn't matter. He had to crouch abruptly in the corner before his legs gave way. He clamped his hands over his mouth and tried not to look anywhere in particular— not at Jordie, dead beside him, or Jesper, dead on the morgue table with a set of terrible wounds. He could hear snatches of conversation:
"...ran up debts... gangs... sent debtors after him..."
****
"Well, Miss Zenik— I run a little thing called the Hellshow," said Rollins. "Heard of it?"
Nina shook her head.
"Don't," Kaz said, even though it made no difference.
***
With a horrified start, Kaz realised it was Wylan; leaning on the wall in neatly re-hemmed Barrel flash and hastily cut hair.
"I want my cut now," he said.
"You'll get a cheque in a few days."
"In cash; now."
"You think I'm running a charity?" said Wylan. "You think all this information and all those chemicals come free? If you want to run this job without me, that's fine. But I won't bail you out of the Stadhall Jail when the Stadwatch grunts catch you with a fucking circular saw at the vault."
Per Haskell exchanged glances with Red Felix and Beetle. Eventually, there was some fumbling, and a wodge of kruge was produced. Wylan took it and counted it.
***
Kaz watched him go.
"He won't get out," he said.
"He might," said Jordie.
"He won't," said Kaz. "He can't. He's in too deep, now. He should've folded and left months ago, but he was too conscientious about the money and too anxious about being scammed."
***
"I get it, alright?" Kaz said wretchedly. "I get it. I understand."
"Do you?"
"I know I have to live for everyone else to make it, too." Kaz spat. "I know. What do you want me to say?"
"Fate has plans for us all, Kaz."
"Killing her and taking her platitudes? That's fucking rich." Kaz turned and paced the cobbles furiously. "Fuck! Fine! So— what? Go on! Tell me! Give me the moral!"
***
It's interesting bc I kinda like the idea (I miss Kaz when he's not there I get very upset when he's not around. Like a baby at a party screaming when everyone holding them isn't the Specific Person They Want) but also I think I'd never have finished this lmao. Also I'd have had to decide if it was a real supernatural kinda thing or if it was just Kaz's brain on a mad one. And like I say, I kinda prefer the ominous absences... To deploy Kaz's favourite tactic, planting an idea but leaving a lack of specifics or certainty, creates a lot more unsease.

Steddie thought- I was doing my yearly "It's A Wonderful Life" rewatch & immediately thought about them at the beginning. During the whole "Is this the ear you can't hear on? George Bailey, I'll love ya till the day I die" scene, imagine Eddie doing this to HOH Steve except oops. It wasn't the ear he was looking for & Steve heard everything.
listen you cant do this IAWL is one of my favorite christmas movies

43 and 46 for the weirder asks if you want x
Ooo thank you pal!!
43. what’s your take on spicy foods?
Okay so here's the thing. I grew up very very very white in a very white place with very white parents. I also have some, err, challenges with cognitive flexibility related to food haha, BUT. I have come to reallllly love very flavorful foods and I do eat widely from a lot of different global cuisines. I just can't take a lot of heat. I think it might be because I'm sensory (though I'm not a super taster), and my sad lil white lady palate gets overwhelmed easily. Except for siracha though, I actually love siracha. Oh and bread dipping sauce with parmesan and red pepper flakes. I can eat that, like A LOT.
46. favorite holiday film?
It's a Wonderful Life. It's a great movie of course, lots of people love it, but it's got a personal resonance for me. My dad was a philosophy professor (I know it explains a LOT) and he spent a lot of his career on Aesthics, and he loved movies SO SO MUCH. So I used to go to movies with him when I was a kid, and we always watched IAWL every Christmas. He just loved that stuff. He died a few years ago just before Christmas, and now every year, I watch the movie and drink a really nice glass of wine (another thing he loved haha) and think about my Dad. It makes me really happy.

*clears throat* by the way, all of j2m didn't say die hard, as cute as that would have been.
Misha answered It's A Wonderful Life, and someone in the audience screamed die hard, and he nodded.
this is what happens when you're a gossip rag spreading word from other gossip rags. No like i mean literally the people 2po hangs out with are like human rags. [points at pinned post about the doxxing etc]
haven't checked into if the other two actually said it I just know that one for sure so. you know. it's a very minor piece of misinfo on 2po's part compared to his normal fountain of made-up and often hateful garbage spun wholecloth from nothing but, I'm at a point I'm just going to continue to nail in how unreliable his shit is.
(fwiw, IAWL may have also been audience suggestion he engaged, i'd have to view it but one of the crows was like... uhhhh DH was audience suggested, they think he said it IAWL, someone else doesn't and thinks it came by audience, but either way, yeah they were led answers)
