file this one under things i’m gonna die mad about: the way james dean’s character jim stark from rebel without a cause became a pop culture symbol of cool, rule-breaking bad boy-ism but that whole concept is now very removed from who jim stark actually is: a guy trying his absolute damnedest to be good and being continually fucked over by his circumstances, a peace-seeking young man who shows nothing but kindness to the people around him and just wants to make friends but is continually forced to fight, a guy self-aware enough to know he has problems and needs help but unsure what to do about it or what he even can do about it, a guy who for no crime other than being himself has been deemed “bad news” by the society around him and is now being continually punished for it.  rebel without a cause is about found family and mental health and the struggle to be a good man without a clear role model, and it’s queer cinema, and goddammit, jim stark is awkward and earnest and kind.  he isn’t a heartbreaker as in he’d have a fling with someone and then scram, he’s a heartbreaker as in the people who care about him are stuck watching him get screwed over again and again with no idea how to help him.  hell, his love interest judy is way more of an asshole than he is, at least before she realizes he’s a genuinely nice person.  the entire tragedy of the movie is watching jim and his friends be condemned when they don’t deserve it, watching them run away together someplace safe and free where it’s just them and watching the violence of the real world come back after them.  jim wants peace more than anything else.  but somehow this whole bad boy idea now connotes something much closer to his in-movie rival buzz gunderson, a misogynistic bully who torments others for fun and decides to become physically violent towards jim simply because he seems an easy target.

once again saying i hate what pop culture has done to rebel without a cause. he's not a "bad boy" he's a fucking teenager whose peers keep mercilessly fucking harrassing him and his only crime is that he doesn't roll over and take it. that movie is about and for weird kids who got bullied NOBODY ELSE

society could be built on selecting random women to be put in a blender and pulverized monthly and tiktok would be like “how to SLAY the blender look! if you don’t want to get blended you’re just a pick me. getting blended is an act of rebellion in our society. how to dress more blendercore. trans women will never know what it feels like to be worried about getting selected for the blender every month (even though trans women get blended more often than cis women). trans men are traitors because they don’t get selected for the blender anymore (even though they do). actually women are more biologically suited to be blended because our soft frail bodies are easier on the blades and our brains are full of goopy feminine emotions and fluff so there is nothing of value lost when they’re crushed into a chunky red liquid. it is an act of divine femininity to be blended.”
