Rough and Tumble aren't the most interesting antagonists out there, but I do think "Jobber Villains" are important when you are trying to expand your story's world. Not every villain should be a world-ending threat, so having a few opportunist bullies our heroes get to knock around can be pretty fun if you know how to handle them.

Sonic's world recovers from the Eggman War – Volume 1: Fallout! (#1-4)
I've been reading Sonic comic books since I was a tween. I remember picking up Sonic the Hedgehog #145 from my local comic shop because it had the tagline "Shadow returns... and Sonic doesn't stand a chance!" and I was obsessed with Shadow the Hedgehog as a kid.
I had no idea what was going on or who any of those characters were jumping into the Archie continuity so late but I knew one thing: I wanted to read more!
There's no better time than now to get into reading Sonic comics if you're a fan, like me! With the license passing from Archie to IDW Publishing in 2018, an entirely new continuity has begun and you can find trade paperbacks of every issue easily at big booksellers and comic shops alike. And what's even better is the new series is in the games' continuity so you have all the background you need if you're a gamer. Bare minimum, you just have to know what happened in Sonic Forces to know where we are in IDW Sonic.
Tumblr media
Last time on Sonic Forces, Dr. Eggman nearly took over the world with one simple trick: a gemstone called the Phantom Ruby controlled by a mercenary who called himself Infinite. With the help of a brave Resistance fighter "Rookie" (who you get to create and customize in the game), Sonic and Classic Sonic were able to defeat Eggman and Infinite!
IDW Sonic picks up in the immediate aftermath of that conflict. With Infinite defeated and Eggman missing, the world is left to rebuild. In the absence of a leader, the doctor's badniks have begun to roam the countryside directionless but still dangerous.
My mega review of IDW Sonic begins with volume 1: Fallout! which collects issues 1 through 4 of Sonic the Hedgehog.
Story
Tumblr media
Sonic arrives in a small town beset by badniks and super badniks. He bumps into none other than Tails and the two team up to save the town. Tails however is concerned that this band of badniks was more coordinated than usual and theorizes that someone must be behind this, but with the lack of evil speeches and knowing Eggman's flare for the dramatic he doubts it could be the doctor's doing.
Tails resolves to stay behind and help the town rebuild while Sonic runs to the next closest town to see if he can unravel this mystery.
Once there, Sonic teams up with Amy Rose to stop yet another badnik horde. She tries to convince him to return to the Resistance to help coordinate their next move, but Sonic believes he’ll be put to better use scouting ahead and helping more towns. He can cover more ground alone with his signature speed, of course.
Tumblr media
With the help of Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic saves another town from a pair of bandits, the skunks Rough and Tumble.
Finally, Sonic makes his way to Spiral Hill Village, home of Tangle the Lemur, the first original character of the IDW cast. Tangle is a ring-tailed lemur capable of using her tail to fight as well as pulling and launching herself all over the place. She’d been defending her home for a while from the directionless badnik hordes, but this more organized bunch is another story.
Tumblr media
Sonic begins to help but then another ally from his past arrives: Blaze the Cat. Sonic informs her she’s several months late to help with the Eggman War, but she might be just in time to help with this new problem. The trio dispatch the horde in short order, as you might expect.
All the while, we see a shadowed figure in Eggman’s old command chair watching Sonic and Co. from a distance. His menacing dialogue is clear — there is someone pulling the badniks’ strings, but who and why?
Presentation
Artwork
All of the artists in what we’re calling part 1 are returning artists from Archie Comics’ Sonic series, though most of them are new to me as their tenures started after I stopped reading Archie.
Tracy Yardley is one of the longest-serving artists for Archie Sonic and having him return to illustrate the debut issue of IDW Sonic was no coincidence. Yardley’s art style perfectly fits Sonic and his mastery of these characters’ likenesses is essential to establishing the authority of the new series.
While having Yardley, in the beginning, was comforting, he’s eventually phased out in favor of newer artists like Evan Stanley and Adam Bryce Thomas, whose work has absolutely blown me away.
Tumblr media
When I first opened up issue 4 and saw this spread of Sonic outside Tangle’s village (above) I was completely blown away by the level of detail Adam Bryce Thomas was bringing to the table.
Evan Stanley’s art has quickly become my absolute favorite for this series, to the point that I wish the games and TV shows would start using her art as a reference. The stylized colorful eyes, the shapes of the characters’ features and their expressiveness adds a youthfulness to everything and highlights Sonic’s appeal to children.
Out of this part, the only artist I didn’t like was Jennifer Hernandez in issue 3. While Yardley’s art is functional and familiar, Stanley’s is cute and vibrant, and Thomas’ art was breathtaking, Hernandez’s is just a little too simplistic and chibi for my taste. It doesn’t fit into the other three art styles in this arc and it honestly clashes.
Tumblr media
The highlight of her issue however was the introduction of Rough and Tumble, whose character designs really shine through. They immediately present like past hoodlums in the Sonic series like Fang, Bark and Bean and they help make Sonic's world feel "lived in."
Characters and Writing
Continuing the trend of relying on the old guard of the Archie days, Ian Flynn is the head writer of the new Sonic comics and I couldn’t be happier.
Ian Flynn is by far the best writer for Sonic across all mediums. His grasp of these characters is rock-solid and you can tell he does his best to push the development of these characters as far as he’s allowed to with Sega’s strict guidelines because he genuinely wants the best for this series.
Tumblr media
The new characters introduced in these first four issues are immediately endearing. In terms of named characters we have Tangle, Rough, and Tumble.
The best part of Tangle is that she fits in like a game character. She's not just a random humanoid animal, she has a game mechanic with her stretchy tail and you can easily imagine her as a playable character someday. Plus her bubbly personality somehow both fits in with Sonic’s colorful crew while also standing out.
World-Building
The world of Sonic that we got in Sonic Forces was different than what we’ve seen in the past, but the IDW team had to make it work as if the games have one continuous continuity. For example, in Sonic Adventure (1999), we see that Sonic lives in a world populated by humans in metropolitan cities like Station Square. In Sonic Forces, the world is primarily populated by anthropomorphic animals and Eggman seems to be the only human.
We see in the IDW comics that the animal population lives in small villages spread across a beautiful, undisturbed landscape. To me, this fits into older Sonic games’ focus on the nature vs. humanity theme with natural areas like Green Hill Zone in sharp contrast to the industrial Scrap Brain Zone. It does, however, make Sonic’s world look very small and simplistic compared to what we’ve seen in the past. In future issues, we’ll see that the animals also live in their own metropolitan areas, though this clashes with the environmentalism we see in Part 1.
I also enjoy how Sonic is shown to be a celebrity figure in his own world. After saving the world so many times, he would obviously be a hero in whatever cultures exist on his earth, but beyond that we see animals talk about getting his autograph.
Tumblr media
The Verdict
Overall, IDW Sonic starts strong and cements itself as the definitive Sonic comic book experience. I would never recommend a casual fan start with the previous Archie book when IDW exists.
The creative team is exceptionally talented and making great efforts to put out the absolute best book possible for fans and children alike. You could easily pick up issue 1 with no prior knowledge of the Sonic series and not be lost at all, while at the same time, dedicated fans have plenty to chew on.
Next time we'll be reading Sonic the Hedgehog vol. 2 "The Fate of Dr. Eggman" which collects issues #5-8. If you'd like to read along, pick up a copy for yourself and I'll see you next time!

The side story is more heartfelt stories of the Freedom Fighters helping families in exchange for Gaia Keys, this time revolving around Tails and Bunnie and how they relate to a broken family in Adabat. Hernandez is still killing it in the art department and Flynn always makes some good dialogue that fleshes out the characters just a little bit.
It doesn’t hit quite as hard as the last issue, but effectiveness of the wholesome interactions, introspective flashbacks and how Bunnie has grown wiser over the years cannot be denied!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The overabundance of heartwarming moments and call-backs in these Sonic comics could never bother me. I live for this stuff!

Hi there! I was wondering about the IDW comics-is there a way to read them online? I've been trying to find a way to read them but it seems like you have to buy them one by one. Thanks!
Tbh, I’ve been reading them online here, but I’ll be buying them soon. I’m just not sure which format I want yet. IDW has digital copies on their website - issue #1 is $1.99, and volume 1 (the first 12 issues) is $19.99. Places like Amazon, ebay, and Barnes & Noble have them, too. The art is incredible, and I would much prefer to buy physical copies so I could see it on an actual page, but the prices are pretty steep, especially for those fancy hardcover volumes, and they’re frequently out of stock, so I’ve been hemming and hawing about it.
They did release a FREE issue about Tangle and Whisper, so if you’ve ever been curious about those two, check it out here! I really like them.
I’d highly recommend IDW not just to Sonic fans, but to literally anyone with eyes. It’s great for a million reasons, but I’ll focus on the art here. The covers are beautiful and action-packed, right from cover A for issue 1...
Tumblr media
(Artists: Tracy Yardley & Tyson Hesse)
...to the latest, beautiful renaissance-inspired cover B for issue 59:
Tumblr media
(Artist: Natalie Haines)
She made an actual painting for this, and she’s damn proud of it. As she should be. Just look at it!
More pretty IDW art and accompanying ranting under the cut.
I adore the introductions they give to the characters. Here’s Amy being a cute badass in issue 2. She’s earned it!!!
Tumblr media
(Artist: Adam Bryce Thomas)
Side note: I like how they introduce characters in the order they were created, so Tails was issue 1, and issue 2 featured Amy. Knuckles didn’t show up until issue 3! This series gives Amy her proper place right from the get-go. It’s a nice touch.
Blaze is always cool in IDW--well, figuratively speaking. Look at her awesome introduction in issue 4!
Tumblr media
(Artist - Evan Stanley, colorist - Matt Herms)
IDW’s artists do a great job portraying dynamic motion and physical impacts. There’s another really cool use of her powers later on, but I don’t want to spoil it! 👀
It’s not just the characters. The backgrounds and scenery are great, too. This is Angel Island from issue 9. Love the foreshortening in the back:
Tumblr media
(Artist - Tracy Yardley, colorist - Matt Herms)
And the art being as good as it is fuels how strong the characters are. When was the last time the games properly showcased Amy and Cream’s friendship? IDW does it right, and issue 22’s art reinforces that:
Tumblr media
(Artist: Priscilla Tramontano)
The context makes it significantly more heartwarming, too, but it’s another spoiler.
Apart from Amy, the one character who I think benefits most from this is Silver. This is his cutest, dorkiest, most endearing iteration yet, and I am here for it! Top two images are from issue 8, and the gardening segments below them are from IDW’s 2019 annual. It has some cute Silver/Blaze moments, and it doesn’t have any real spoilers for the main series. You can read it independently. It’s $3.99 on IDW’s website.
Tumblr media
(Issue 8 artist - Evan Stanley, colorist - Matt Herms) (Annual 2019 artists - Jonathan Gray, Jack Lawrence, Jennifer Hernandez, and Diana Skelly)
I can’t help but smile whenever I see him. He’s cute in other iterations, too, but I always picture IDW when I write Silver.
Oh, and one last thing: after Amy and Silver’s cute meeting in Sonic 06, I headcanoned that she has a tendency to mother him. It fits well into the Shadamy-Descendent-Silver theory (y’know, that concept that was “sarcastically” suggested by Ian Flynn, Mr. IDW himself?), and I incorporated it into Shellshock. It was only after I’d gotten into the habit of writing them that way that I read further in IDW and ran into instances like these (spoilers removed):
Tumblr media
(Issue 14 artist - Tracy Yardley, colorist - Leonardo Ito) (Issue 25 artist - Adam Bryce Thomas, colorist - Matt Herms)
And she is always the one to do this. No one else mothers him like this. Headcanon confirmed! Three points for the descendant theory!
