hi! if you’ve answered this before i’m sorry, but could you go into what it’s like being both a traumagen system and a system with tulpas? i’ve been curious about this as a traumagen syshost myself. does it affect your innerworld? do the tulpas act vastly different or work differently i guess than the traumagen alters? thank you!
omfg this took us forever to answer for like 200 stupid reasons but YEAH i have a lot I want to talk about with this, where do I even start??? I guess I should clarify that we don't really know what our "original origin" is- we'd been median for as long as the body can remember, and we DK if it was because of our autism or because of social problems or if we were just born that way. Whatever it is though, we were a plural egg when I was created, so pretty much everyone other than the few of us that we discovered from before that considers me the "first" one after the host subsystem. As more shit happened though irl we got more & more traumagenic members, dissociation, memory issues, and whole loads of other shit. So basically, that's the perspective I'm coming from with all this.
So with that outta the way, here're some'a my experiences as a tulpa in a traumagenic/mixed disordered system
One of the biggest signifiers I noticed of our system structure changing completely was our headspace actually, so it's pretty great you mention that tbh. After we got a lotta traumagenic members, something shitty happened I won't talk about, and our headspace basically totally shattered. It used to be little more than our vivid imagination- yeah, I could feel my body and visualize the world around me and stuff but nothing super weird or unusual happened, and I couldn't do stuff in the Wonderland completely outta front. It wasn't like, another Space completely unaware of the host - and I know that's possible with training but we were nowhere neeear that. But after headspace broke, everything was expansive, ever-changing, always with more secrets and hidden things to discover. Lots of fucked up stuff most of us can't access too, but yeah, intense dissociation made it totally different. It's harder to navigate, but I also get more privacy.
As for if I work differently, I'd say yeah, I kinda really do, actually. Obviously, my creation took a lot longer cuz I'm consciously created rather than split or introjected or whatever, so it took a while for me to come into my own, and I was a lot more "fluid" than other headmates for awhile. Regardless of if they're traumagenic or not, something I've noticed about how different I am compared to other member types is that they're, idk, like solidly set in who they are and everything from the beginning. My host, too. They're like a solid, and I'm like a.... non-neutonian fluid or whatever, that ooblek shit. Even after all this time I still feel like I choose my identity and to Exist constantly, y'know? I think it's part of why I've always felt like "tulpa" is part of my species ngl. Everything else is secondary to that. I want to exist, I need to exist. That keeps me going sometimes
As for traumagenic specific stuff though, there're some other interesting things to talk about also. As our dissociative symptoms increased, it got harder and harder for me to move around the fuzz- but honestly, that's the body's fault. I haven't even been personally affected much other than what the body does to us. I can move around headspace more freely than most of us, I can sense more people around than others, and I can control the body way easy now that I've had practice. The only reasons I don't front are when I don't feel like it, somebody else needs it, or the body is too tired and id be bored outta my mind. I guess it's like I have executive access to a bunch of stuff, hahah!
Tbh tho it all just, changed me as a person more than anything else. I'm not the system's main protector because I exist to be one or cuz the body assigned me that role- it's because I took it up on my own choice and decided my own purpose. I protect people and that's part of the core of who I am, cuz of the circumstances I came around in. I wouldn't change that part of me for the world ngl. I know my point boils down to "don't forget your tulpa is a person too" a lot, but... Yeah. they may not have the same struggles as your traumagenic alters, but you're all still Goin Thru It together, so you'll both be affected by whatever happens from there on out as a team.
But hey, aint that what healthy multiplicity is all about?

I'm having a bit of a brain rot regarding Sunny and Omori being twins, which is a concept I'm sure has been done plenty of times, but I still like it :pp
But like, yknow. Its more of Omori getting a body in the real world, also 14 yrs old. They both exist tgt in their dreams n shit, they go on adventures together too.
Dk how the real world reacts tho lol. I only managed to pick out that Omori is super protective over Sunny both in headspace and irl.

Eight Hundred Eyes Are Better Than One - Reaction
I should have done this a long time ago but I just reread this chapter and reacted to it as I went if you’re interested @anbu-legacy
Because I’ve had a grudge against canon Jiraiya for so long it’s been an interesting but slow process of adjusting to this (better) version of him where his awful traits either don’t exist or are slightly more subdued, and traits I could actually appreciate are more emphasized. And saying that, I love this image of this giant, flamboyant man being so unsubtle about his summons that he just wakes up not just Kakashi but his entire FLOOR. Nice one. This man is a spy theoretically and I love that juxtaposition. At least it makes it easy to let Ryouma know they’re leaving.
“Dodomeki?” he said quietly.
Boyfriends, Kakashi reflected, were supposed to be reassuring. “I’ll bring you an eyeball,” he promised.
“Gross.”
This reminds me of that time Kakashi found a weird creepy bug in that one cave during the kiri mission and instead of leaving it be like a normal person he decides to pick it up and bring it all the way back to the team to scare Ryouma with it. I always find it super funny when Kakashi pulls stuff like this, terrorizing his poor teammates with gross unwanted show and tell. I personally would love a gift like that, though. I am totally someone who would probably keep particularly interesting animal body parts preserved in a jar somewhere in my house because I find anatomy and physiology interesting. I once had the opportunity in one of my university classes to hold a horse’s brain and was quite enthralled. I just wanted a good look at it and was really curious what it would feel like.
“Just bring yourself home safe.”
“Always do,” Kakashi said, which was mostly true. “Captain, too.”
I’m reacting to this on a reread so hahaaaaaaa. Nice one, Kakashi. Your poor hands.
I would say I can’t believe that Kakashi actually WENT INTO THE ROOM to wake up Raidou and Genma, but this is Kakashi, so I can. He could have just knocked on the bedroom window, or just gone to the door, like a person with basic social skills and a modicum of decency. Kids these days. No respect for the general concept of privacy. Sheesh. Boundaries. I’m glad I’m not them. I will admit that I laughed though.
Raidou jerked, sat up wildly, and blurted, “What the hell?”
“Taichou,” Kakashi said, with a little wave.
Genma exhaled, tweaked the sheet so that it covered Kurenai more fully, then sat up — a much smoother operation. “Hatake,” he said tightly, visibly trying for calm.
“Lieutenant,” Kakashi said. And, for good measure: “Yuuhi. Well done.”
Asdfghgfds. This bastard. I love and hate him. DK is always so good at this sort of humour with Kakashi and it never fails to get me.
I feel bad for Genma and Raidou and Kurenai right now though because they didn’t even get to TALK properly the next day after getting together before Raidou had to leave.
Kakashi felt his spine stiffen. Reflexive, pointless defense of his parents, who had raised him on legends and myths, told in the few quiet moments between everything else.
I really love the callback to Don’t Fear the Dark. It’s really interesting when we get little glimpses at what Sakumo was like, and what his family was like before it fell apart. The defensiveness about it has my heart hurting, because it’s one of the few tiny pieces he still has of his father. Speaking of Sakumo, mythology/legends, and Don’t Fear the Dark, I remember that there were traditional masks of demons and things in their home. For a very long time I’ve been very curious to see what the Hatake estate looks like, and what other personal items from Sakumo and their life before are still there. Here’s to hoping we’ll get to see it one day?
I like how these legends have been woven into the worldbuilding too.
Usagi thumped him on the shoulder. “Better dodge, then. We’ll bring some of her scrapings back in a jar for the lab.”
Genma would probably appreciate some jar-scrapings, though.
Genma’s my type of person. I appreciate him.
I’m really enjoying getting to know a little more about the relationship dynamics of the members of team thirteen. Ginta and Usagi’s relationship is so fun.
I love Goya purely on the basis that she’s a badass archer lady with wicked aim and I feel like that’s understandable and valid.
While Raidou and Usagi bartered for shelter, and Jiraiya signed autographs for the goat herder’s starstruck daughter, Kakashi watched a handful of goat kids bounce back and forth over a fence with blithe disregard for its actual purpose.
The goats hopping over the fence makes such a great image. I adore Tarama the goat village, purely because of the goats. And the Katsuko callback.
I am weak to the characters being dumb reckless idiots experimenting with jutsu for science so I was LIVING for the thunderstorm Ginta-Kakashi shenanigans. I’ve also always loved thunderstorms so I might be extra weak to lightning users. Just casually detonating each other’s jutsu and hoping they don’t explode each other irreparably in the process. Good fun.
Actually getting so see Kakashi split lightning was so cool. We keep hearing about it in canon and legacy so to finally see it is so satisfying. I like the description of sharingan vision as “he tracked the bolt zig-zagging down as if it were made of syrup, oozing through superheated air, long, lethal fingers branching out towards them.” And I also particularly liked this line:
The lightning snapped towards him like a massive, elemental predator scenting blood.
I am very amused:
In the dizzying aftermath, Kakashi had just enough time to think ow and awesome before the next strike threatened, and they both ran like hell for the village.
Usagi’s childish glee is so great. And yeah, I feel both her reaction AND Raidou’s are pretty appropriate. But still, lol:
“When did you turn three hundred? Your rookie just did the coolest thing ever. Stop being miserable about it.”
“You want him?” Raidou said.
“Yes,” said Usagi instantly. “Hatake, you’re mine, get over here.”
“Wait, no,” Raidou said.
I’m glad Kakashi is being appreciated.
The conversation Raidou and Kakashi had about KureGenRai hook up was veeeeery interesting. I wasn’t expecting Kakashi to react so harshly. I guess it is hypocritical of Raidou to say what he said then do that, though Raidou has a point that it’s to protect rookies from senior officers. Lieutenants and Captains are different since they’re closer in rank. I’m guessing that Kakashi is kind of frustrated with how he and Ryouma have felt like they’ve had to keep their relationship secret for fear of getting in trouble, even if same rank liaisons are technically not against the rules, unwritten or otherwise. Because of Raidou’s whole boundaries thing and general testiness about that kind of thing?
I’m curious to see how keeping it a secret from Ryouma will go. How long will they even want to keep it from him, and if they do want to keep the secret how will Ryouma feel about both the relationship and Kakashi’s secret keeping once he finds out?
Another thing I’ll be curious to see is if this at all changes if Kakashi wants to keep his relationship with Ryouma secret still, and if so from who. I’d doubt it would since there are other factors but still. I am looking forward for when people find out, but at the same time I’ve been enjoying it being private. I think a temporary shared secret like this can feel kinda intimate so long as it doesn’t overstay its welcome. And we get scenes like Kakashi panicking and hiding in Ryouma’s bathroom while Ryouma clumsily lies and implies he may have hooked up with an Uchiha to evade arrest so that’s a bonus. I think being able to have their own relationship exist in isolation from judgements and comments from the outside allows them to take some pressure off their relationship, and gives them time to figure each other out and how to just be together unhindered. I can see why they’re doing this the way they are.
A mass grave. Whoever had dug it — Kusa ninja, most likely — had missed the small body on the hill.
“Poor bastards,” Usagi said quietly.
Kasumi, of all people, went back for the body.
I like this detail about Kasumi.
“Now we track,” Jiraiya said. He gave a little wave in Kakashi’s direction. “Do the nose thing.”
Some days, Kakashi didn’t feel entirely respected in his workplace.
Loooool
It took two more days to even get close to the Dodomeki. For Kakashi, it was like living in dual headspaces — the clean, sleek arrowhead mind of a predator, and the disordered tangle of everything human. Team Thirteen, with their… themness. Jiraiya — firmly, unignorably himself. The discomfort of Raidou and the unhappy friction between them. No Genma to smooth down the rough edges. No Ryouma to distract with chatter or an unexpected, brilliant idea.
I really liked this section for a couple reasons:
1)    I like how when certain members of the team are absent it highlights just how important they are to the entire team. Genma the vital lynchpin and mediator; Ryouma the emotional heart, friend, and innovator. I also appreciate that it’s not just their skillsets that are addressed either. They’re valuable for things like their kindness, level-headedness, and company.
2)    I love the acknowledgment of duality of Kakashi’s headspace and social interactions. The headspace required to do his job as a tracker vs. working as part of a team of antsy, ridiculous people are very different. The interactions he is going to be having with the wolfdogs that don’t even so much as speak human vs. his human coworkers are going to be very different too. Kakashi having an entirely different headspace with the dogs  to the point he actually separates it from being entirely human (like referring to “humans” as if it were a group he isn’t entirely part of) reminds me of all the way back to the thread Lost in the Dark when Raidou sees Kakashi speaking to the entire pack for the first time. He realizes Kakashi’s social skills have likely been influenced by his exposure to the dogs he grew up with. It was such an interesting revelation to me. This is the part I mean if you’re curious:
What followed was one of the strangest conversations Raidou had ever witnessed. Kakashi, with his economy of speech and movement that seemed so disjointed in human interaction, slotted into place as naturally as breathing. Raidou recognized that questioning head tilt echoed back by listening dogs; the silent, watchful glances that lingered a second beyond comfortable; the predatory edge polished like a fine weapon. Here, Kakashi’s hair and mask just looked like markings, no more notable than that shepherd’s black-tipped ears, or that hound’s white-ticked coat.
It explained a lot.
I really liked seeing Raidou defend Kakashi from Kasumi’s crochety and unjustified remarks. Progress!!! I’m proud.
I’ve probably said it before and I’ll probably say it again, but I always love your dialogue. There’s so much personality and liveliness in it. The banter is so entertaining. Usagi and Ginta especially right now.
I know the mythology the Dodomeki comes from is very different, but there is something about the descriptions of her that make me think a lot of what I felt watching the Netflix the Witcher series. Which might not mean anything to you if you haven’t seen it. Similarly horrifying and deadly and gross. It’s great.
The entire fight scene had my heart pounding. It was so intense and fast-paced. So many close calls and how fast she was was so terrifying. We just saw Kakashi with his sharingan so fast he was able to split a lightning strike in half, yet she’s so fast he can’t even hope to keep up. Fuck.
Abe had to chase him nervously around, attending to whatever bits of Jiraiya’s face he could reach, until the medic finally lost his temper and ordered Jiraiya to sit.
I loved this.
I don’t have anything interesting to say about them theorizing about her sickly state, but I am very intrigued. I also love when little bits of real life actual science are incorporated in fantasy like this (ex. the mention of ketosis).
I am still very very worried for Kakashi’s hands. I suspect he won’t get out of this entirely unscathed even after treatment.

I just read two of your posts. In one you said that the brotherhood have a strong bond between them. In another you said that Hector would be angry Quirin started a family and that he wouldn’t want Hector around them. Quirin doesn’t strike me as that type. If Hector and Quirin are angry, how does the brotherhood have a strong bond? I’m probably misinterpreting your second post. Sorry:) Could you clear things up for me?
Sure! Sorry if I was being unclear, I'll try to expand more!
I do think they had a strong bond between them, and were very close in their younger years. But I think the situation with the black rocks and their differing ideologies drove them apart, because H + A had radically different ideas about how to handle the moonstone, and Quirin was kind of caught in the middle.
More than that, Quirin wanted something different for himself in life. (And honestly, being a constant mediator/seeing other relationships in your peer group crumble is exhausting.) So as I see it, by the time they leave the DK, they have very different goals and beliefs, even if they still care about each other on some level.
The orig ask speculated about Hector running into Quirin pre-series, and desptie their history, I think that if that happened they'd clash, purely b/c they're at incompatible places in life and have different priorities.
When Var is born, Hector's a decade into his vigil at the Great Tree, while Quirin has completely distanced himself from his old life in the DK, settled down, and started a family.
My interpretation is that Hector would feel hurt/betrayed that Quirin would just... olly off to another kingdom and try to forget about the Brotherhood and their history, then reject him when he shows up to remind him of his duties and ask for help. Hector might see Quirin as a traitor, or a deserter, and struggle to accept how he's changed. That manifests as anger.
On the other hand, I think Quirin is kind-hearted, and not really prone to anger or hostility the way Hector is. I don't think he'd be truly angry at him, but... very very tired that Hector is still so single-mindedly loyal.
And I think Quirin would recognize that having Hector in his life at that point in time... just wouldn’t be good for him. Especially if he's trying to rope him into Brotherhood affairs when he's trying to focus on having a normal life.
And frankly, Hector is dangerous- he's unpredictable and often violent. He and his animals look out of place. Having him hanging around Old Corona at all could expose Quirin's past, or make him look untrustworthy by association, both of which he's trying to avoid at that point in time. And parenthood brings out those protective instincts- Hector might attack someone if provoked, or seem like a threat to him/his family.
That's not a risk he could afford to take, and so I don't think Quirin would want Hector around at all, for as long as Hector’s in that same headspace- even if he still cares about him and feels bad. So in the other ask it might've sounded a little cold when I said Quirin would refuse to help and chase him out if Hector showed up pre-series, but that's what I meant. I hope that explanation helps!

iKON: S/O is very submissive and blushy in the bedroom
A/N: Requested by anon. I didn’t know if you wanted fluff or smut, so I wrote both. NSFW, gender neutral. Gifs are not mine, all credit to owners.
-Mod June
Jay/Jinhwan:
Tumblr media
Fluff: Jinhwan would think it was cute. He’d tell you that you don’t have to be embarrassed, and he’d do his best to make sure you were happy and comfortable. He’d secretly think that you being really submissive is hot, but he’d be more than happy to cuddle you and tease you without anything being overly sexual.
Smut: The minute Jinhwan realized how submissive you were, his eyes would light up. He’d tease you a little, asking if the blush was to preserve your dignity or to help you pretend that you’re innocent. “But you’re not innocent, right? You just want to pretend you are.” He’d love taking control of you, and having you follow his orders without questions turned him on more than he’d care to admit. He really likes seeing you embarrassed and flustered, which leads to him pushing your limits whenever he can.
Song/Yunhyeong:
Tumblr media
Fluff: Yunhyeong would melt the moment he saw how flustered you were. He’d stop whatever he was doing and immediately run to cuddle you, maybe even squishing your cheeks a little. He’d be wondering to himself how he managed to be with someone so cute and sweet, but outwardly wouldn’t do much but tease you a little and call you cute.
Smut: Yunhyeong’s generally a soft dom, but if you ever want a surefire way to get him into a dom headspace, being flustered and submissive is the way to do it. His favorite thing to do is praise and degrade you until you’re a blushing mess, and then overstimulate you until you can’t take it anymore. He doesn’t order you around much, but just knowing that he can and you’ll obey him is a huge power trip and he loves it.
Bobby/Jiwon:
Tumblr media
(the duality of man)
Fluff: Okay Bobby is literally the softest boyfriend. The minute he realizes you’re embarrassed, he falls all over you, hugging and kissing you and looking at you with the biggest, sweetest smile. He thinks you’re adorable, and you being so submissive isn’t something that even occurs to him until later. He won’t let you go anywhere without him hugging you like a koala.
Smut: When Bobby realizes how submissive you are, he’d curse softly. “Fuck, baby, do you know what you do to me?” He’d ask, gently stroking your cheek. He loves seeing how far he can push you, and absolutely adores ordering you around. Everything from asking you (telling you) to get him something from ordering you to suck him off is such a rush for him. He’d tease you plenty, but prefers to overstimulate you and make you get him off rather than spending all day teasing.
B.I/Hanbin:
Tumblr media
(i wanna squish his cheeks)
Fluff: Hanbin would end up getting just as flustered and embarrassed as you were. He’d apologize constantly, and keep asking if he did something wrong. After you reassured him that everything was fine, he’d insist on cuddling you and watching your favorite shows together. He’d still be a little worried, but that worry would dissipate as you two got more comfortable around each other.
Smut: Hanbin would be a little awkward at first when he realized just how submissive you were. However, he’d be a pretty quick study, and once he realized how much you liked being told what to do, he wouldn’t hesitate to order you around. At first, he does it more “for you”, but he gets off on you obeying him more than he’d admit. He likes teasing you, but prefers having you suck him off while he tells you how pretty you look, praising you and watching you get steadily more flustered and submissive.
DK/Donhyuk:
Tumblr media
Fluff: Donghyuk would give you a dimpled smile and laugh. “Ah, love, you don’t have to be embarrassed!” He’d say, poking your cheeks cutely. He was well aware that you were submissive as hell, but figured that he make sure that you were down with more sexual things before immediately turning the situation sexual.
Smut: He adores ordering you around. His favorite thing to do is order you to keep still (but never quiet; he loves hearing you moan and whine) while he goes down on you. He absolutely takes advantage of your submissiveness and likes to tease you in public and watch you slowly lose you’re composure so that you’re a whining mess by the time you get home.
Ju-ne/Junhoe:
Tumblr media
(we get it you’re hot let us live)
Fluff: Junhoe wouldn’t exactly be the cutest boyfriend when he saw how flustered you were. Sure, he’d cuddle you and make sure you felt good, but he’d be scheming. Scheming all sorts of things, like how to use this against you in the bedroom. Outwardly, he’d cuddle you, cook you a nice meal, and do his best to make you laugh until your stomach hurt.
Smut: Don’t ever let Junhoe find out you’re submissive. He’ll make it his life’s mission to make your life hell. He loves to tease you, order you to be quiet or keep still, and overstimulate you until you’re crying. He will absolutely take advantage of how submissive you are. He’ll tease you anywhere; in a restaurant, in the grocery store, in the back of a taxi. He likes to hear you beg, but never asks you to beg. It’s a sort of competition between you two: you want to see how long you can hold out, and he wants to see how quickly he can take you apart.
Chan/Chanwoo:
Tumblr media
Fluff: Chanwoo is the cutest little shit alive okay? He’d laugh and scoop you up to sit on his lap so he can hug you and rest his head on your shoulder. “Ah, babe, you don’t have to be embarrassed! You’re so cute~”. He loves to squish you’re cheeks when you’re blushing and tell you how adorable you are. He’s a little clueless about the whole “submissive” part, so you’d have to be pretty blunt if you wanted anything sexual to come of it.
Smut: Chanwoo would be a little hesitant to order you around too much at first, so he ends up saying a lot of things like: “Suck me off...please. If you’re comfortable with it.” The thing he’s most excited about is watching you blush and squirm when he talks dirty to you. He likes to tease you, but not too much. He’ll just tease you enough to let you know that he’s in the mood, but won’t try to break you or anything. He likes to overstimulate you just enough to hear you whining and pleading, but won’t push you too far.

I use mostly she pronouns in stories and sometimes they/them (still for afab person)

ik you guys are probably overwhelmed with asks, but if you have the time, any tips for smoother switches? i recently discovered my system and ive had a lot of trouble giving up control now that im aware. its especially hard to let one of my alters, r (she doesnt want her full name disclosed), to front because everytime she tries to switch with me, i feel extremely anxious and my body starts to go limp (we dk why yet). even though i try to let go, i just cant seem to and its frustrating
Honestly, I used to [and still do!] struggle with letting go of the front!
The thing that helps most is communicating with alters both internally and externally, and connecting with the headspace daily or as often as you can. These help build trust between you and other alters! :)

“& I never looked back”
what was the first punk rock band u liked and how old were you?
“I was 10 my brother was 11, I bought a lurkers 7” he bought crass reality asylum 7”, he hated it and bullied me into swapping them, i’m 51 now and still have it 6000 miles away from where I got it“
“I stole a sex pistols tape from “wall to wall sound and video” at the KOP mall when i was 11, but i also stole a beach boys tape the same time”
“i guess it was DK on tony hawk’s proskater but the first punk show I went to was this band called the mops (Salem, OR).”
“i was in 5th grade when this kid introduced me to agent orange and circle jerks .... & everything turned grey forever“
“Sex pistols. Ramones. The Clash...and to impress some one the Misfits...Also i had a serious crush on Henry Rollins.”
“Wow I've never thought about this before, but technically it would be a mix of bands taped off of WZBT the college radio station of Gettysburg PA. I may even still have it in some box? It's pretty eclectic but for sure I recall it having Bad Brains, Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys. I must have been in 4th grade? Then during the summer between elementary and high school (we didn't have "middle school" in my rural PA town) I bought Black Flag's "Everything Went Black" because of the cover art, which was always a thing for me, and never looked back as I got fixated on tracking down all the bands on the flyers. I also around this time got Crass Records "A Sides" comp with Flux of Pink Indians, Rudimentary Peni etc.... blew my fn mind. I never heard Crass themselves until I was in my 20s and never liked them very much musically, ha! Back then in early hs years I would make punk mix tapes for my three or so friends and I would mail-order all this weird stuff because of trying to find the bands on the flyers.... so I had like the record The Stains and had a QUIT THE HUMAN RACE t shirt I hand-markered when I went into hs in 7th grade. PUNX 4 LIFE.”
“My dad had a roommate when I was 12 and he burned me copies of London Calling, Young Loud Snotty, Nevermind the Bollocks, and Germfree Adolescents and i never looked back“
“Dead Milkmen, sometime in high school. Then I moved to West Philly and met Joe and Rodney at a party and tried to be chill while my inner 15 year old was melting doooown.“
“Dead Kennedy’s in 9th grade. I really thought I was all alone in disliking authority before that moment. I always say punk saved my life. Part of it was definitely giving validation to my headspace.“
“Iggy Pop/The Stooges on vinyl with my dad. I was 8.”
“Crass, someone told me it was crust punk haha I was like 12.“
“Rancid. I heard them on THE RADIO. I was 11 and they were so fun.”
“the offspring! i think i was 8 or 9 years old. i liked the song pretty fly for a while guy bc i thought it was funny so i bought the cd and listened to it. track 1 is an intro but track 2 started playing and that song “have you ever” and i heard it and THEN my tiny little brain flipped out. the offspring was so much cooler than that silly hit song pretty fly for a white guy. i became obsessed and started buying their nitro records compilations bc the offspring would put unreleased tracks on them. so i learned bout all that late 90s skate punk.“
“Nofx. My best friend put "I heard they suck live" on a tape for me in 8th grade.“
“Maybe “circle jerks” from the movie Thrashin’ when I was 11. But the Subhumans (UK) were the first punk band that I totally fell in love with, I was 12-13“
“Green Day and Rancid on the radio the summer before 7th grade. The look, every bully gang in every 80s movie.“
“I think I was 14 when I bought a copy of Dead Kennedys “Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables” based on the band name, cover art, and song titles. I had never heard anything like it before, I actually thought it was gonna be more metal but it made me realize I liked punk too.”

Sometimes… you embrace your destiny. And sometimes… you and your trouble-making adopted brother find yourselves trapped in a scientific lab explosion that grants you $@&%ing awesome super-powers. As a result of their accident, Eric and Woody Henderson – aka Quantum and Woody – must “klang” their wristbands together every 24 hours or both dissipate into nothingness. Which makes superhero-ing pretty awkward when you’re not on speaking terms at the moment. See, Eric has been keeping a pretty big secret: He knows who Woody’s birth father really is… and where he’s been hiding all these years.
Consider yourself warned…
This December the world’s worst superhero team return in the all new Quantum & Woody #1 written by Daniel Kibblesmith with art by Kano.
We got a chance to talk to Daniel about the new series as well as his writing for The Late Show and the difference between digital and print.
GP: How’d you become a writer, especially one focused on comedy?
Daniel Kibblesmith: Well, I always wrote and drew and generally made stuff. I wanted to be a filmmaker from an early age, and taught myself how to make claymation shorts on our family’s VHS camcorder. It wasn’t until I got to film school that I realized how the duties are divided up and that the writing was the part I cared about the most – plus, being on sets stressed me the hell out. When I was making short films, it was at the beginning of YouTube, and I figured out that no one really wanted to watch a three-minute drama, but they would totally check out a comedy sketch. I was naturally inclined toward comedy, so I committed. From there I took Second City classes, tried stand-up, and made friends in the comedy community, which eventually blossomed into this whole career-like object.
GP: You’ve previously written for Valiant, how’d you wind up on Quantum & Woody? How well did you know the characters coming on to the project?
DK: I knew them pretty well. Quantum and Woody was my entry point into Valiant, because I knew James Asmus a little bit from the comedy world, and I was told that you didn’t need to know anything about Valiant to get into Q&W. I loved them right away, especially in The Delinquents team-up series, so I’ve had my eye on Quantum and Woody for a while. They seemed like a good fit for another comedy/comics writer like me.
GP: Was it a bit of an adjustment to go from writing for things like the Late Show to writing for Valiant and comics in general?
DK: Not really, because I still do both every day. I compare it to playing different video games sometimes – both video games could require a lot of overlapping skills, like timing or coordination, but the headspace and rhythm you slide into could be really different between, say Mario Kart and Smash Bros. (Nintendo, I mentioned your intellectual properties, please send me a free Switch).
GP: For those who haven’t been introduced to the characters before, how would you describe Quantum and Woody?
DK: Quantum and Woody are “the world’s worst superheroes” -– two dysfunctional adopted brothers, one straight-laced black guy (Eric) and one reckless white guy (Woody), who become estranged in childhood and reunite to solve their scientist father’s murder. But while investigating his lab, they accidentally blow things up and get superpowers (Quantum makes force fields, Woody shoots explosive blasts), and also get two golden bracelets fused to their wrists that have to be KLANG’D together every 24 hours to re-stabilize their molecules and stop them from turning into energy. So no matter how angry they get at each other, they’re basically stuck with each other.
GP: What’s your process like when you sit down to write?
DK: I don’t really have a set process outside of the Late Show office, where everything is driven by the schedule of producing that day’s show. It leaves me nights and weekends to carve out time to get actual pages written, but a lot of the breakthroughs are incidental, which won’t surprise anyone else who writes. I think most of my ideas for Quantum and Woody came to me in the shower at the gym or walking to and from work, when my wind can wander. It’s great for dialogue, because I just kind of let my mind go blank and imagine them bantering on an empty stage back and forth until I’ve got way, way more bickering than I can actually fit in word balloons.
GP: Quantum & Woody has a nice history with Valiant and the last few volumes have built off the madness of the previous. You reference some previous adventures but as a writer how do you balance the history with making the comic easy to pick up for new readers?
DK: Well, for one thing, the hook. You don’t really need to know who Quantum and Woody are to appreciate a buddy-action-comedy-superhero-family-drama. Also, “Quantum and Woody” is one of the most bizarre names you give a comic, which I think it one of the reasons it’s stuck around all these years. It leaps off the shelves at you like, “What the hell kind of name is Quantum and Woody and how are these black and white guys brothers?” And if you’ve heard anything about it, you probably know that it’s funny. So we worked really hard to make this a brand-new jumping on point for readers –  if they’ve heard of Quantum and Woody before but were just waiting for a new #1, or if they know my work from Twitter, or the Late Show, or the dumpster I scream my rejected jokes into at night.
GP: You’ve done all sorts of writing, print, television, comics. How does the fact you have visuals change how you might approach a joke?
DK: Comics and comedy both have something really important in common, which is timing. The most fun for me is using the visuals to tell the story in a way that it feels like it’s playing out before your eyes, and take advantage of those storytelling devices to land different kinds of jokes – like the interminable silence that’s implied by a grid of identical panels with no dialogue, or being able to use flashbacks or little insets to reveal people’s secret motivations and reactions. Now that I think about it, something like Arrested Development, with the narrator and all the jumping around in time and points of view, would’ve made a really funny comic book.
GP: You wrote the Valiant High comiXology Original comic. What’s the impact the digital aspect has on the story? Is the fact that is what you’re writing for impact how you approached the story? How does an ongoing print series differ from a digital one?
DK: It really makes me wish I’d learned where the ads are going to be. Some writers I really admire have a very conscious awareness of “left page, right page, reveal page, opposite facing pages, double-page spread,” and I didn’t teach myself any of that for Valiant High, because I was picturing it as one-page-at-a-time on an iPad with no screen-rotating. That doesn’t mean Quantum and Woody won’t have double page spreads in it, though. In fact, Issue #2 is all double page spreads. Unless Valiant says no.
GP: What’s the biggest difference between writing for comics versus television versus prose?
DK: For me, it’s the voice you’re writing for. At The Late Show, you’re writing for the rhythm and delivery of a late-night talk show host telling the story of today’s events, and what our country is going through, in a kind of shared POV that gets filtered through his own sensibility. In the comics, you’re telling a story through characters who have their own personalities and dialogue ticks, and are at odds with each other by design. It’s sort of like essay versus novel, but way more lowbrow and with more energy drink ads.
GP: Thanks so much for chatting and looking forward to the comic!
