hello, my sweet sweet tumblr friends. i have a new book out one month from saturday. here we are together, the book and i:
Tumblr media
this one was fun. i wrote it with my sister! when we were young, we were cutthroat competitive. she (older) would forbid me from reading the books on her shelves, and i (gremlin) would booby-trap her room, so you decide which of us committed the greater sin. now we have a blast.
our names are pronounced REE-uh-nock and SHEE-fra, and our book was pitched as THE PARENT TRAP meets THE VANISHING HALF. it releases August 15th, 2023. logline is "Two half-Chinese half-siblings collide for the first time at a summer art camp, not knowing they're related—and begin to understand who they are as artists, as brother and sister, and as Asian-Americans."
it's a book about summer camp hijinks, about passing, about what we long for and where we belong. it also says "Robinson & Robinson" on the spine, which makes us sound like an accidental injury law firm. sweet.
of all the books with my name on it, this one is probably the "book club"-iest. if you like coming-of-age novels or stories about the AAPI diaspora, you might like this one :)
you can preorder a signed copy from my local indie here, or non-signed copies from Bookshop.org, Barnes and Noble, or Amazon. i really cannot stress enough how much every single preorder helps, as i am what the industry calls "a midlist author," also known as "an obscure author who has difficulty placing projects with publishers because of sales figures lmao." (this is not to whinge. the majority of working authors exist in this financially & existentially precarious position)
alternatively, i would be totally thrilled if you reblogged this post, or mentioned the book to any teachers, librarians, bookstore workers, or other readers in your life :)
happy summer everybody—may it be the lazy river of your dreams. xoxoxo

❝ he was handsome enough, though he'd had the bad luck to inherit his father's weak chin, and his eyes were so heavy-lidded that he always looked bored or slightly drunk, but now he seemed to have roused himself from his perpetual stupor. ❞

I think I just need to accept at this point that I’ve lost any ability I might once have had to distinguish between the titles of actual YA fantasy novels and parodies of the same.

Need something to do tonight? Try my stream!
We're taking another bold step outside the public domain on Paper Cuts tonight, this time with Marion G. Harmon's Wearing the Cape!
I absolutely loved this book from the first time I read it in high school, it's got an absolutely fascinating take on superheroes and how they'll enmesh with celebrity culture in a world not unlike the one we knew then. The series at large poses some fascinating questions about duty, legacy, and just what it means for these cities to court powerful superteams, and this first book in particular focuses on the difficulty of "coming out" into hero society.
Want to hear more? Need specifics on some of what I pointed out there? Come drop by tonight, 8pm pacific time, and I'll be reading it aloud, live!
(That's April 5th, 8pm pacific, and if you miss it, there'll be a VOD, too!)
And if you want to grab the book to read along, you can find it here:
Last but not least, if you like the sound of a live audiobook, go check out the podcast, available in your favorite podcatcher! I'd suggest looking for titles that sound interesting, I name the first episode of each book after the title!

Finished Babél by RF Kuang last week and reflecting on it. What did ppl think of it? I found the writing very heavy handed and didactic but I can see why it is a hit w the intended (?) audience (highly educated white people who haven’t yet discovered that colonialism is a bad thing or a thing at all 🥴) I can also see that this is a topic RFK herself is really grappling with like right immediately now as she is writing it lol. The world building and character archetypes are kind of simplistic but it serves the above mission of dictating an anti-colonialism 101.
I liked the character relationship between Robin and Rami 👍 will be giving my copy to the neighborhood children via the community lending library, I think they could enjoy it.

mal in the grishaverse is to alina what jacob in twilight has been to bella. in this essay i'll...
#okay so in twilight jacob is like bella it's unnatural that edward is alive he should have been dead long ago. and if he was and he didn't#meddle with natura and the timeline i would be the one for you in our timeline. but he's here because he's extra special and that makes me#obsolete. because like alina and mal matched until they were both common and not special but now alina is a summoner and#she's the specialest of special girls and mal is throwing a tempter tantrum over that right#and they are like. they should be best friends and nothing more.#anyway that was point A#I'm over not one not two but three glasses of wine but even like this I know that one point justification belongs in my friends DMs not#an essay so let me present point B#so he's like the firebird right (he just circled her hand where the last amplifier would go and they felt weird#incredible foreshadowing btw) so like he belongs to her but only part of her belongs to him and that's very jacob vibes with all the#renesmee business. and also mal is just. so desperate to define himself by what he is to alina like he expects the answer to his own#identity crisis that is the consequence of his own actions (deserting literally no one asked that of him) from her#like the only way he thinks about defining himself is in relation to her . and like yeah ig they are teenagers and 'in love' or whatever#(they have zero chemistry while the darkling and nikolai are constantly standing next to alina and it works but ig I digress)#so i'm just constantly being told and they are in love and want a simple life (and that's the very thing that made me side with Gale instead#of Peeta back when so I'm probably primed to not want that for characters) but idk I just don't see it that they'd make such a good pair#anyway I guess this is a Mal hate post and I'm dragging the moder YA lit's each and every love interest into this 'analysis'#blueberry wine is excellent by the way would recommend#miaing

srsly my problem with ya genre of books and movies is mostly how it's all about romance. even the hunger games that are about survival in the authoritarian country is full of romantic relationships and the main character is wanted by two boys and she doesn't know which one to choose uwu 🥺 and the big bad president seems to be bitter because of a heartbreak 👉🏻👈🏻 like, write some ya book about a teenager locked in her bedroom going absolutely insane while she feels her life slipping through her fingers and crying herself to sleep after isolating herself from all the people and situations that would make her feel more real. thank you

sometimes i remember my own work is just *the unending burden of memory* *recognition through the other of the self you can never have* *the inherently cyclical nature of pain and suffering* *examinations of grief of loved ones yes, but also of childhood and self* *does god hate you if you are god?* *hope as religion and friends as family* *the inherent cycle of rebirth and renewal*
