Fic: gemtho [NC-17]
Inspired by the "game" from Gem's S10E03 (aka I found an excuse to write filth).
--
“You said I could take anything,” Gem reminds Etho, who stares up at her, eyes wide and skin flushed above the line of his mask.
“Yeah, but I meant — ”
Her hands work at his belt and then his pants, getting both of them open, pushing and shoving for what she wants.
“I made my choice,” she says, managing to slip his pants far enough down his hips that she can see he’s half-hard already. “I’m gonna take you.”
His hands are tight on her waist and his mask shifts in time with his breathing, but he doesn’t argue. Not even about the fact that she has him flat on his back in the grass just outside of his home, where anyone might see.
“You could’ve just asked,” Etho groans when Gem spits into her palm and reaches down to stroke him.
“It’s about the game,” she reminds him, and it feels good to have the weight of him in her hand again.
They haven’t done this since they moved, swept up in the chaos of starting over, but she’s missed it — missed him.
And it’s clear Etho feels the same, because it hardly takes any effort to get him the rest of the way hard, the curve of his cock and the wet tip of it making Gem ache inside.
Etho’s hands slide higher, groping at her in a way he doesn’t usually, not unless she really gets him worked up, and she finds out quickly that it’s what she needs.
Part of her wishes she was wearing her skirt still, because if she was, all she’d have to do is tug her underwear to the side and she could take him. Instead, she has to pull back, away from everything she wants.
Etho grunts, but it doesn’t take Gem long to kick off her boots and slip out of her pants and underwear, and Etho stares like he can’t get enough, even after seeing her bare so many times before.
Briefly, he reaches down as though wanting to get her fingers on her — or maybe in her — but she bats his hand away, too impatient for anything that’ll slow her down.
“Gem,” he tries, voice tight, but Gem’s already holding his dick steady, guiding him into her as she slowly sinks down.
Etho’s head tips back, his throat bared, which makes it easy for Gem to fold forward and get her mouth on it.
He feels so good filling her up and he doesn’t move, letting her set the pace she wants, even as she works a bruise onto his skin. The fact that he doesn’t tell her not to makes her even wetter, knowing he wants to walk around with it, that he’s okay with anyone seeing it.
She digs her teeth in, just enough to make him moan as she finally settles on his hips, his cock as deep as she can get it. It’s been long enough that the stretch of it stings a little and she knows she’ll feel it later.
She gives the line of his jaw a final kiss before pulling away, sitting back and looking down at him.
His headband has shifted, his hair a little tangled and flyaway, but he’s breathing hard and staring back at her with dark eyes.
“Still wish I’d taken something else from your base?” Gem asks and Etho exhales forcefully.
“No.”
She smiles at the fact that he answers, like he knows she’d force him to if he didn’t, and then rolls her hips, giving him what he clearly wants.
He lets out another breath and Gem continues, enjoying the feeling of him nudging so deep inside, and she keeps at it for a long moment, reaching between her legs to rub at her clit to help adjust to him.
She could come like that, given enough time, but she doesn’t think she has the patience for it. After so many weeks with nothing but her own hand, she wants Etho to make her come hard and fast.
“Y’know, I never said you couldn’t move,” she muses, watching Etho’s expression shift. “You’re doing that voluntarily.”
His gaze tracks her and she sees the moment he understands, and she feels the moment he understands when he brings his hands up to her back and the world starts to tilt.
Somehow he manages to roll them, slipping out of her only long enough to untangle his pants from around legs, before he pushes her thighs open again and shoves back inside.
She laughs, throwing her arms out and enjoying the softness of grass beneath them.
Etho fucks her with a strength she still hasn’t grown accustomed to, still takes her by surprise, and it’s exactly what she needs.
“God,” she groans, curling her legs around his waist, trying to pull him even deeper with every thrust. “I missed this.”
The frantic snap of Etho’s hips wordlessly says he feels the same, but she can see it in his expression, too. The way he stares at her as though he’d try to find her in any universe they fell into.
She shuts her eyes and turns her hands palms-down, clutching at the ground beneath her, breathing hard and chasing the feeling growing inside her.
Etho moves against her, though his thrusts never stop, and Gem startles as his mouth finds her own, mask no longer in the way. She pushes a moan between his lips alongside her tongue and he kisses back with a fierceness she’s never felt from him before.
It’s like it’s the only way he knows to tell her he never wants them to be apart again.
“Yeah,” she says against his mouth when he finally breaks away to catch his breath, and she hopes he knows it’s the answer to his unspoken question.
Their bodies are loud in the silence around them, but she can hear and feel how Etho is already beginning to lose rhythm, the way he trembles trying to keep up the pace.
“Want me to pull out?” he asks, lips grazing her cheek and Gem shakes her head.
“Don’t care,” she pants, because either way she’ll have to wander down to the river to wash. She’s so wet, she’s a mess already.
Etho adjusts, just enough that every thrust manages to rub her clit at the same time, and she doesn’t stand a chance.
“Etho,” she begs, and in no time at all, he has her coming the exact way she’s needed — deep and devastating.
She’s still shaking from it when Etho gets a hand under one of her knees and pushes it up, fucking her faster but with none of the precision, and when he follows her over the edge, it’s with a loud groan that she can feel through his chest.
He keeps moving — maybe to push his come a little deeper, though probably just because it feels good — and with how wound up she feels, she knows she should take advantage.
“Keep going,” she tells him. “Just a little bit more.”
He’s probably sore and oversensitive, but he still obeys, and Gem reaches between them, circling her clit with two fingers just long enough to make herself come again, the second orgasm hitting sharper, but just as hard.
“Gem,” Etho says, sounding a little astonished, a little broken, but Gem lets herself go boneless with a laugh, her legs dropping from around Etho’s waist.
“God, I needed that,” she sighs, and Etho carefully pulls out before dropping into the grass beside her.
She stays there, eyes closed, catching her breath, a gentle tugging at her hair that suggests Etho’s playing with it as he rests next to her.
She can feel his come dripping out of her, cooling quickly, and yet can’t bring herself to care.
When she opens her eyes, Etho’s watching her, but when he notices, he smiles — a rarity for her to see.
Carefully, she rolls toward him, throwing one leg over his own and bringing a hand up to his face, thumb nestling in the dimple of his cheek.
“I’m glad we’re neighbors,” he tells her, and happiness bubbles up through her chest and escapes as a laugh.
“I’m glad, too, Etho.”
When she leans in to kiss him, he meets her halfway.

anyway posting some thoughts from the discord about how many 'irl relationship' things they're dealing with in ep7 and how much i am eating my mattress about it
they rushed into sex and ed regrets it and that doesn't stop it from having been consensual and fun but the fact that it was consensual and fun doesn't mean that it was a good idea
ed feeling like he can't watch stede make the same mistakes he did but also feeling like he can't ask stede to leave piracy for him when stede is just getting started. and ultimately he's too scared to ask stede to leave piracy for him because what if stede says no? what if stede looks him in the eyes and confirms yes, you are unloveable, yes i'm choosing piracy over you, no i don't love you enough, why would you ever think i could love you enough to do this for you?
just the overall turmoil of being at a different life stage to your partner - like the difficulty of when you're at the beginning of your career and they're established in theirs, or when you've had lots of relationships and they've only had you, or when you're ready to settle down and have kids but they're not, and nobody is in the wrong, it's just difficult
making a breakup about a completely unrelated issue bc you can't voice the actual problem. twisting it into 'we're fundamentally incompatible' (fishermen and pirates are completely different) so you can convince yourself it's not because you're not good enough. if you hit self destruct and leave without explaining things maybe it'll be less painful than opening up about what's actually wrong only to have them throw it back at you and leave you anyway. maybe if i pretend it was never going to work out i don't need to think about why it stopped working in the first place
stede still feeling like he's not good enough for ed and trying to change himself to make himself feel more worthy. unable to comprehend that anyone could possibly love someone so soft and inadequate. feeling like he doesn't even want ed to like him for who he is, feeling insecure that ed only likes him bc he's weak, feeling like he needs to toughen up to earn ed's love. the eternal worry of 'my partner is the best person in the world and i am just a worm so why are they here, why are they staying with me, what's their motive, what can i do to change myself so they actually want to stay for me and not for whatever reason they've got going on'
basically these 18th century gay pirates are experiencing every problem you've ever had with a partner and they're gonna be fine and so are you i love you

Reader asks TR characters: would you love me if i would be a worm? 😁😅
Hhhhhh. Ok, this is one of my favorite couple questions. I feel like it'd be so fun to annoy the guys especially with this. I chose Draken, Hakkai, Tetta, Emma and Hina. Might add more if I get ideas.
Thank you nonnie~♡.
Ken "Draken" Ryuguji.
"Baby, I have a very important question. And I really want you to take this seriously, it could change our relationship forever..." You talk.
Draken stopped his movements on his bike, lowering the tool he had in his hand and getting up to sit by your side.
"Alright. What is it? I promise it won't change a thing, I'll always stay by your side, okay?" He says in a soft voice, looking at you with seriousness in his eyes.
You take a deep breath, getting the words ready before you look him in the eye. "Would you still love me if I was a worm?".
"..."
"Actually, I don't think I love you as a person." He goes back to his bike, working on it silently.
"Come on! This is serious! Would you? I really wanna know..." You whine as you walk behind him.
Draken let's out a sigh. "Yes. I would love you if you were a worm."
You perk up and go crouch next to him by the side of his bike.
"Really? Even if I was an ugly one?" You ask cheerfully.
"You already look like an ugly worm." He teases blankly, neutral voice.
"KEN!".
Hakkai Shiba.
"Hey, Love Of My Life? Prettiest Boy Alive?" You call to your new boyfriend.
He turns his head to the side to look at you, "Hm?" he's still not fully confident in your company, but he's getting better at actually conversing.
"Would you love me if I was a worm?" You ask.
His face goes red, eyes wide. "Taka-chan didn't prepare me for this!" He thinks. "Uh... I-... Y-yes?" He asks, more than affirms.
"So you're admitting you love me, then?" You can't help but tease him when he looks this cute.
"Ah! I- I don't-! I mean- I do!- N-no! What I mean-" You just laugh as he stutters. Yeah, this relationship will be fun.
Tetta Kisaki.
"Baby..." You start. The second he hears your tone he KNOWS you're gonna say something stupid.
"Don't." He responds simply.
You lie on his arm and pop your question. "Would you love me if i was a worm?" You say with doe eye.
"..." He finally sighs. "What kinda worm? Eath? Venomous? Caterpillar?" He trails off. You think. "I don't know, any worm."
"There's a difference. Venomous?" He asks. "Mm, caterpillars are more interesting. Sure." You decide.
"Mm..." He thinks, thinking about it a bit too seriously. "Yeah." He settles. "What if i was an earthworm?" You continue.
"No."
Oddly enough, his last response doesn't sound like the truth.
Emma Sano.
"Princess... Would you love me if i was a worm?" You ask your girlfriend.
"Ew." She says with a small disgusted expression. She then leans on your arm and looks up at you, trying to give you a cute face.
"Would YOU love me if i was a worm?"
"That's unfair, i asked first!" You complain.
"Hmph... Fine... Yeah, i would, you'd be a cute worm." She says, finishing it off with a sweet smile.
A giggle escapes your lips. "Well, i would love you too if you were a worm. You'd be one of those cute fluffy ones." You realize.
"Aww. We could go on worm dates, squiggling through the leaves. Settling down and having worm babies." Emma starts trailling off, in her little worm fantasy.
You blink a few times. "Ok, that's enough."
Hinata Tachibana.
"Hinaaaaaaaa." You call out, to your girlfriend sitting on the other side of the couch.
"Yeah?" She responds, tilting her head with a small smile.
"Would you love me if i was a worm?" You ask.
"Yeah!" She tells you. "I would get you a little terrarium. Fill it with fresh soil and spraying it a bit, putting little leaves in it and making sure you're well nurtured." She explains nonchallantly.
"Would you get me little decorations?"
"Yup. Some tiny sticks and little branches with holes for you to hide. Some pretty rocks too." She adds cheerfully.
"..." You stare at her. "I love you."

One of my favourite things about Deep Space Nine is imagining how Sisko's superiors must have been reacting to his shenanigans behind the scenes.
I mean just imagine it.
You're an admiral or something in Starfleet. You belong to an organisation that spans half the galaxy, has access to unimaginable (to many civilisations) levels of technology, and contains numerous different cultures.
You are well aware that the power and technological advancement of the Federation makes you inherently dangerous to less technologically advanced peoples. Like the moment any group is introduced to you, the development of their species is basically going to be changed forever. A single individual fucking around can, if careless, negatively impact an entire world.
Avoiding this kind of thing is therefore one of the core values of your civilisation. Your Prime Directive. There are huge lists of rules and regulations over when it is an isn't appropriate to intervene. People have literally died rather than break them.
And then there's this one world, whose people have only just overthrown an oppressive regime and are looking to join your Federation. You and your colleagues vote to help them rebuild, while steering clear of interfering with any of their politics, of course, and send some of your guys over to help administrate.
One of those guys then goes and DECLARES HIMSELF A GOD.
Like, we, the audience, know that Sisko was chosen by the Worm-Hole Aliens to be their Emissary. We know that he struggled with accepting the role at first and that he had visions and eventually came around to whole-heartedly believing in the Bajoran religion.
But Starfleet doesn't know that! Starfleet isn't inside Sisko's head!
From Starfleet's perspective the most logical explanation for all this is that they sent some guy to the back of beyond, the local people got him involved in their religion and then he either went crazy or saw an opportunity to gain power, and now he can impact the entire planet's political decisions on a fucking whim and there's nothing anyone can do about it.
I mean, this has to be every higher-up's worst nightmare, right? This is the sort of extreme scenario they'd come up with in school textbooks to explain to children why the Prime Directive is necessary.
If the Dominion War hadn't happened, Sisko's main legacy in the Federation would have been "the reason why we have all these extra regulations about interfering with non-Federation worlds, and why all Starfleet Captains operating in the vicinity of such worlds have mandatory psych evaluations every couple of months."
And they can't even do anything about it! They can't remove him and replace him with another Officer, because the local people are 100% on board with this 'Sisko's the Messiah' thing and won't work with anyone else. You can't back away from the situation entirely and give them a few years to repair the damage because it's super critical for the war you're currently fighting.
You can't even really control Sisko, because although he makes a show of being The Good Starfleet Captain, in practice there's always a risk that if you say something he disagrees with too strongly he'll just go off piste and do something else entirely and justify it with: "the Prophets told me to".
Which, again, the audience knows is a very real thing that is actually happening to Sisko, but from Starfleet's perspective could be anything from "Sisko is hearing voices" to "Sisko is legit just pulling things from his ass and trusting that we won't risk pissing off the Bajorans by contradicting him."
Just saying, from the perspective of the Federation, Sisko is probably as well-known a cautionary tale as he is a hero.

AG: Tavros, you give confidence a 8ad name. I gave you all the chances in the world to earn it, to earn REAL confidence, and you failed.
Tumblr media
Pictured: Vriska giving Tavros 'a chance to earn real confidence'.
AG: You couldn't even do the one little thing I asked you to! The one thing that would have made you man up once and for all.
'Man up' is a funny idiom for a troll to use. We've occasionally seen trolls fall into human gender stereotypes, but it's quite rare, and always sticks out like a sore thumb.
There's an interesting conversation to be had about troll genders. With a reproductive cycle so different to ours, their gender framework will inevitably be different as well. Yes, there are male and female trolls - but what do male and female actually mean to a troll?
On Earth, your assigned gender carries cultural baggage which simply wouldn't exist on Alternia. Assigned gender plays no role in reproduction, nor does it influence household division of labor, since trolls don't have households.
Gender aside, do trolls have a concept of masculine and feminine? Beyond a few stray idioms, the only evidence I can find is their clothing styles. We haven't seen any male trolls rocking a skirt - not yet, at least.
tl;dr: 'Man up' is a cultural can of worms. I think that was probably unintentional, though, and I think we're supposed to interpret that line as if a human spoke it. Vriska's calling Tavros a wimp, which is business as usual.
AG: So instead you flew away and cried, and decided to sleep away your sorrow for the rest of the adventure.
Tavros already alluded to this incident during his conversation with Jade. I guessed that Vriska would be involved, but that was a bit of a no-brainer.
Vriska's trying to frame Tavros as pathetic, but it sounds like he actually put his foot down, flat-out refusing to participate in whatever she had planned. Much like the FLARP incident, this sounds like a victory for Tavros, even if she's convinced him otherwise.
AG: Do you have any idea how sick that made me? Everything a8out you makes me sick.
He rejects your advice. He rejects your advances. His lusus cared for him. He was allowed to be kind, and accepts kindness from others. He doesn't care about winning, but he never lets you win. No matter how much you torment him, he refuses to get any stronger, which means your mindset might be wrong.
'Sick' would be an understatement.
AG: Your plan to control her lusus really wasn't a 8ad idea! AG: And using your a8ility to "save her life" (lol) was a pretty good way to test how effective your powers are across sessions. [...] AG: Practicing your a8ilities is important, so when it comes down to using them for something that really matters, you know you're ready for prime time. AG: I know this first hand. AG: I got lots and lots and LOTS of practice with your little guinea pig friend. ::::D
So that's why Jade was constantly napping? That can't have been good for her brain.
Tumblr media
AG: The catch is it's not going to work! [...] AG: You couldn't sic the guardian on Noir even if you were inclined. Not even if I were to MAKE you inclined! :::;)
Like I said before, it's really Vriska who can control First Guardians.
Tumblr media
AG: 8ecause you are dealing with a pro here. I already thought of that. AG: I thought of everything! AG: The guardian is not going to attack the agents who engineered him in the first place. AG: Or who I should say were "encouraged" (lol) to engineer him.
Why the fuck would you do this?
Tumblr media
When Vriska prototyped Bec, she explained that the event was mandated by the Alpha Timeline, so she didn't make anything worse by causing it. I don't agree with her argument, but I do understand her logic.
This is different. Up until now, there has been no evidence that Bec can't harm Agents. Vriska had no prophecy to fulfil, and no reason to believe that this was required to preserve the timeline. Yes, now we know it's baked into the timeline, but only because Vriska wanted it.
Having Bec help with Jack was a really good idea, and removing the option to do so helps no one. Where's the benefit?
AT: wHY WOULD YOU DO THAT, AG: Tavros, at this point it should 8e o8vious. AG: I am the unseen hand 8ehind every major event in their session, and to some extent, their whole lives. AG: At least those events not happening 8y the volition of their own natural incompetence! AG: Don't you think this is how it should 8e? Shouldn't the greatest player leave her fingerprints on every step of the rise to power of her ultim8 nemesis?
I know Vriska likes to feel in control, but this is ridiculous.
Inserting yourself into Alpha loops is one thing, but nerfing Bec when you don't have to is straight-up sabotage. Couldn't she just stick to micromanaging John's outfits?
Tumblr media
AG: I have every angle covered already. The human session is on full Serket lockdown. Any effort you make to disrupt my plans will 8e laugha8le, just like everything you have ever done in your life. AG: The only thing left to do now is prepare to kill Jack myself, and save everyone's ungrateful asses.
Oh my god, I think I've cracked it.
Vriska thinks she's the only one with the right to kill Jack.
She describes him as her ultimate nemesis, which reeks of main character syndrome. Bec isn't important enough to kill Jack, so she eliminated him as an option. It has to be her, the most powerful Player, who's gained all the levels, because that is how these things are done.
It's not just ego, either - there's a deeper motivation at play. If Vriska doesn't beat Jack, she doesn't win - and if she doesn't win, then what was all that abuse were all those challenges for? What was the point?
In Vriska's head, Jack needs to be her nemesis. She needs to be destined to kill him - because if she is, then everything she went through was justified. She'll have secured her position as the most powerful Player of all, and she'll never have to be jealous of anyone again - least of all that wimp with his sweet little fairy lusus. They're all weak, and she's strong.
If she doesn't kill Jack, she's a loser.
Tumblr media
And losers may as well be dead.

Here for smut requ!!
Steven having a crush on shy reader n they go on a date and Marc coaches him on what to say and do cuz Steven is a bit nervous and he knows she likes his hands and him praising her and stuff but he doesn’t know how to go about but Marc does 😼
So when they make it to his apartment the once so gentle Steven became rough and dominant.
PLEASE INCLUDE OVERSTIM DIRTY TALK AND THE USAGE OF “good girl” IF UR COMFORTABLE WITH IT.
Thank u and if u don’t end up doing it sorry for wasting ur time.
Just Go with It
Tumblr media
Summary: A very nervous date leads to going over to Steven's place. The both of you are very shy but with the help of Marc, Steven manages to get something started by talking to you and pouring a cup of tea.
Warnings: I didn't actually make smut from this, I'm sorry, but there is talk about the reader having a thing for Steven's hands and being flustered by compliments and praise from Steven. It's kind of a fade to black depending on how you want to look at it.
Author’s Snip: I know that Anon asked for smut but I just couldn't find it in me to actually write some smut, so I did my best to make it a fade to black instead Also it's not fully what Anon asked but I don't really like the trope of the system swapping without the reader knowing that there even is a system. So yeah. I hope this is good enough.
I’ll shut up now. Enjoy! And don’t be afraid to request.

Steven isn't usually nervous or scared when entering into his own flat, but right now his nerves are all in power drive. After a nice date with you, that he had to have Marc coach him through because he didn't really know what to say or do, Steven, on his own, asked if you wanted to come back to his flat to have some tea and talk some more. Something that he has no idea how he managed to courage up saying when waiting for the bill to come back. And when you said yes, he tried to keep his cool and excused himself to go to the restroom, thankfully empty, to make himself more nervous about the possibilities of what might happen now.
"Why are you freaking out, Steven? You managed to do that on your own." Marc questions in the reflection of the mirror. "Because I didn't mean to open up a bloody can of worms, Marc! I just meant that as in actually talking and having a cup of tea!" Steven exclaims as he hides his red face in his hands. "Okay? Then just do that, buddy." Marc answers. "But what if she thought that I was secretly asking to hook up with her and she expects me to make a move at some point?" Steven whines. "Well, in that case, I'm sure she'll have a tell once you're there and if that happens then just go with it if you want," Marc suggests, "It's not that hard." he comments. Steven cringes at that last statement, "It's not that hard for you, mate. But it is for me. I've never gotten intimate with a person before.".
Marc sighs. "Steven, listen. This is your date. You managed to do pretty well on your own with a few pointers from me. I can only help you so much. But if it comes to maybe getting laid tonight, I can't really help you. I'm willing to bet that you don't want me in your ear while you're getting it. If you want, I can tell you if she's giving signs that she wants to go all the way but after that, it's all on you." Marc explains, giving his alter an offer and some extra help in the situation. "If she doesn't show off anything then you guys can just have your tea and talk or whatever." Marc says. Steven looks towards Marc and nods before taking a deep breath and leaving the bathroom to head back to his flat with you.
So now with a kettle on the stove, you and Steven sit on his sofa. "Dinner was nice." you comment, attempting to break the silence in the flat. Steven nods, embarrassed at the idea that he let an awkward silence brew, "Yeah. I found the restaurant a while back, I needed to do something else around there and when I came across it I was like "Oh would you look at that", you know?" Steven rambles before realizing that he was rambling. He also realizes that he's been fidgeting with his hands and immediately stops and folds them when he sees you looking at them, giving a whispered 'sorry'.
"No no, it's fine. I fidget with my hands too." you say as you look back down at them. "They look nice," you mutter under your breath, "They are?" Steven questions. You realize what you've said and backtrack, "I mean, you know, they just look very well maintained. Guys hardly take care of their hands and they sometimes look kinda ugly." you explain.
"Do they really look that nice?" Steven asks as he holds his hands out for the both of you to get a better look at them. You shyly take one of them and feel the skin with your thumb "Yeah." you say, "They feel really soft actually." you remark as you give the one you're holding a little squeeze. Upon looking closer you ask "You file your nails?". Steven, who was caught up in the fact that you were holding and feeling his hands, and thus he was feeling yours, snaps out of it and answers "Yeah, I do. I bite at the edges of them sometimes and so I file them so that they look better.", "It also helps to keep them short so that dirt doesn't get under them." he adds. "Well, they look very well kept." you comment timidly.
Steven nods as a thank you before hearing a 'psst' nearby. He looks towards the source and finds Marc looking at him from the reflection of his TV. Steven gives him a 'what' look. "She likes your hands." Marc points out. "Yes, I know." Steven responds in his head with a slight I'm-not-dumb tone. "No, Steven. She really likes your hands." Marc objects, "Maybe she wants you to do something with them?" Marc prompts with a tone that reads 'if you know what I mean'. Steven thinks about it before he notices that you're still holding and slightly feeling up his hands.
Steven tries to think of something to say or do in this situation, realizing that this might be going faster than he thought it would, but the sound of the kettle starting to whistle steals his attention before he can. With a quiet "Excuse me." and pulling his hands away, Steven gets up, takes the kettle off the stove, and grabs two mugs.
"Pour the tea in front of her. Give her a bit of a show." Marc suggests. "Shut up." Steven mumbles but freezes when you ask "Hm?" indicating that you slightly heard him, Steven recovers by saying "Sugar in your cup?" like he's repeating himself. You smile and say "Yes, a spoon, please." you request. Steven nods and pours a spoonful of sugar into your cup but takes the empty cups to the coffee table and actually does pour the tea in front of you like suggested.
Your eyes flicker between his hands that are on the kettle with a rag and Steven's face. You blush just a little, that would have gone unnoticed if Steven wasn't slightly expecting it. He pours his cup and walks back into the kitchen to leave the kettle. "I told you she'd like it." Marc says from the reflection of the kettle. Steven flashes him a look that radiates the words "Shut the hell up." before dropping it once he makes his way back to the sofa with you.
"You know I really enjoyed spending time with you tonight. I was surprised when you asked me out to dinner." you say as you gently swish around the tea in your cup to help the sugar mix as it dissolves. Steven raises his eyebrows for a bit in surprise at hearing that, "How come?" he asks. "Well..." you stammer, "You're very smart and polite, and handsome. I thought that you would have had someone already. Most guys like you are hard to come by nowadays and most have partners already. So I figure that you also had somebody already." you explain. Steven blushes at being called such attractive things. "Well then you would be surprised that I was both scared to ask you out to dinner and shocked that you said yes." Steven says, "I would have thought that such a beautiful and smart woman like yourself would already have someone or at least have many men trying to ask you out all the time." Steven claims.
"Seems like you got lucky then." you giggle as you blush at the idea that Steven, the man that you've been crushing on for a long time, was saying that he expected to have competition when asking you out. In the meantime, Marc makes a suggestion, "Keep going, Steven, she seems to like it.". Steven nods and does his best to do that. "I mean it. I really do." Steven says, "You really are a rare one. I'm happy you agreed to go out with me.". You sigh and hide your burning red face, "Stop. I don't think I can handle getting any redder." you beg. Steven scoots towards you on the sofa and gently takes your hands away from your face so that he can see you. "I really like your face, in any color it may be in." Steven says as he looks into your eyes, now staring back at him.
A second passes by the two of you while you softly stare at each other, it feels longer, but in a pleasant way. Steven could feel that Marc was going to say something again, but he didn't want to hear it and just did what he figured he was going to suggest. He leans in more and kisses you on the lips, with you flinching just a little before kissing him back.
The kiss is gentle and sweet, but there is a little bit of something in it between the both of you. When Steven pulls away, he notices that your hand is placed on his shoulder with your thumb timidly placed on the base of his neck like you were originally going to keep him pulled in. Steven smiles a bit at the idea and looks towards you, but you are leaning in yourself and manage to press a kiss on his jaw. The soft kisses continue from there and Steven feels less nervous about things possibly going farther tonight and he can sense that you are too.

The hardest thing for a show to do without absolutely Destroying its audience's belief in stakes is fake out deaths. It happens all the time during a season or even series finale: A main character dies, but then is revealed to be mildly/moderately/extremely hurt (throw a dart).
All the emotional payoff a character dying is immediately followed up with a cathartic return of a beloved figure. When its done right, it's Effective. That's why it was so popular, that and another reason.
The other reason is that its relatively Easy. It doesn't require the writers to change the status quo. Silly fun adventures with the gang go on as always without any real changes. This is so Cost and Idea effective, that it got overused and now everyone is jaded.
Now there's good ways to do this of course. AtLA comes to mind: Genuine threat of death, maguffin from last season finale which has been haunting the previous episodes comes into play, and the status quo changes: Aang is recovering from a serious injury for weeks, is furious that he died and failed Again when the world needed him, and he can't tap into god mode anymore.
So what's this got to do with the tags? Well if you know you know. Otherwise spoiler warning so gtfo already.
Sir Pentious, and I suspect Adam, did die a fakeout death, but the death part was genuine. Sir Pentious was not found in the rubble of the Hotel. Sir Pentious didn't respawn and explain that Adam's divine energy beams weren't angelic steel. Sir Pentious was Genuinely dead and the status quo has genuinely changed.
But! The show's premise is that the Hotel can help sinners redeem themselves. Redeption isn't a reward you seek. Its a condition that one meets on a personal, individual level. Sir Pentious came to the Hotel as a spy, and when he was shown that Charlie was willing to forgive him, it changed his understanding of the world. He realized that he could improve, it just starts with one good sorry.
Sir Pentious put aside his self loathing, his shame, his anxieties. He used his inventions to put himself on the line rather than keep himself out of danger (I mean that's what the airship is all about isn't it?). He fought for the people he cared about. He died to protect the ones he loved. And that transformation: from a paranoid worm of a human being (slimy? Snakes are not slimy), to an actualized individual willing to put himself on the line, earned him salvation.
Now Sir Pentious is an Angel! He's in Heaven! Even more so he bypassed the Pearly Gates and functionally respawned In the Seraphim's boardroom. Frankly He was one of the older sinners to be around so it doesn't surprise me the implication that he's powerful enough be worth the notice of the Seraphims.
So what about Adam? Why do I mention him? He was killed by a filthy janitor. Well. As another post mentioned: In the 10,000 years that Adam has been in charge of killing his own descendants because Lilith and Eve (where the fuck is she anyway?) screwed him over with the assistance of a short, dumb, naive angel (poor guy just wanted to share his ideas, look at him. 10,000 years later and he's hardly got a drop of malice in him that isn't put there by someone else), Adam has become Prideful, Slothful, Lustful, and Wrathful. Even one of those is enough to make you fall. Yet he was tolerated by heaven, most likely due to his extenuating circumstances.
Adam has died. He died full of Wrath, and Pride. He died because he was unmotivated to come up with a better solution, and unwilling to keep himself in shape. He died because of his Blood Lust.
So I think that very early on in season two, we will get to see Adam's demonic form.
Two fakeout deaths! But not really. Both characters have provably died and both (theoretically) will create a new status quo not just by dying, but by reincarnating across enemy lines.

ok gamers I rewatched tristamp one more time in order to write a post about the soundtrack, and some of the stuff I found blew my socks off (even though I've seen every episode like 6 times) so buckle up because oh my god. oh my god
this will cover most of both volumes of the OST (which you can find on spotify), with a focus on wolfwood, and a little bit of vash, meryl, and the eye of michael
...and a very thorough breakdown of "drain arm" :)
Tumblr media
notes before I get into it: -I won't be analyzing the plant song because I. already wrote an entire separate thing about that haha (a link to that doc will be in the replies section of the notes if you're interested)
-you won't need to know anything about music theory, because I'm just pointing out where certain themes come up (with the exception of "duet", but I'll explain terminology there). timestamps will be included so you can listen for them as you read
-if you're obsessed with the OST like I am, most of this probably won't be anything new x) but I hope it's enjoyable regardless
-my credentials: I was a pianist for 10 years and an oboist for 7.5 years and I only had 1 semester of intermediate music theory but I got to analyze the 1st mvt of tchaik 5 and I think that permanently altered my brain chemistry
-the tracks I recommend being familiar with to have a better grasp on this post are: -> "whistling/blues harp in the wasteland" (vash's leitmotif) -> "reality" -> "childhood memories" -> "duet" -> "human subject" (eye of michael, or EoM, leitmotif) -> "drain arm" (technically optional)
-please don't take any of my interpretations/speculation as fact! you are absolutely free to come to your own conclusions I just have a lot of thoughts about the soundtrack lol 👍
here we go :]
EP1: -you can hear a variation of the plant song in "immigrant space explorer" (0:36-1:00)
-vash's leitmotif is first heard in "no man's land" (0:41-0:48)
-only about half of "mystery man" plays, and his leitmotif (0:38-0:51) is actually cut from the scene so it's not heard at all
EP2: -"escape" has vash's leitmotif from 0:18-0:31. they also took out the lyrics in the episode's version of the track x)
-it's possible that we'll hear "might is right" or a new arrangement of it if we get to see the rest of the nebraska family in future episodes, since there were posters of marilyn. I think people largely associate the song with EG the Mine but due to the track title and the fact that it first played in this episode, I feel like it's more about the nebraskas
-I'll talk about "childhood memories" in ep12 because it's related to rem's themes
EP3: -the plant song can be heard in "compatriots" (1:01-1:11)
-"reality" is first heard here, right before the episode in which wolfwood is introduced. keep this in mind for later :')
EP4: -"undertaker" has a dissonant sax part (0:48-0:54) that's similar to the one found in "irritation" (1:05-1:11), but it's an ascending passage rather than descending. it doesn't show up anywhere else so it might become a motif we'll hear in the future, but there's no way to know until the next part is released
-"planet zaji", from 0:55-1:04, has that one part from "time left" (1:02-1:09). it's heard while wolfwood's spinning the punisher around but I think it's just something that sounds cool, and you can't really hear it anyway because of the sound effects/dialogue. if zazie gets any additional themes in the future I might have more to say on this
-vash's leitmotif kicks in in "hungry !" (0:21-0:43) when wolfwood introduces himself at the end of the episode. I really like this track I hope we'll get to hear it again x)
EP5: -I don't think there's any meaning behind "shadow" borrowing from "worms network". I'm pretty sure it was just for mood (and to be fair it is a cool track)
-you can hear vash's leitmotif at the beginning of "boy and vash". this is the part where vash is escorting rollo back to the village
-"cyborg" introduces a new 4-note pattern (0:07-0:14) that I'm calling the eye of michael leitmotif. if hearing this reminds you of episode 6 then you already understand what I mean
-"dud" has vash's leitmotif as well (2:20-2:59), which starts playing when vash is begging rollo to wake up after wolfwood kills him
-only a small part of "human subject" (0:25-0:35) is used for the final scene, right when the windmills start turning. using the EoM leitmotif as a sendoff to the empty village is. really haunting
EP6 (this is a long one I'm sorry): -the EoM leitmotif can be heard in "reborn" (0:09-0:14, but it's easier to hear in 0:26-0:30). this is the opening scene where wolfwood guns down the deserter
-they do reuse "worms network" when livio first opens fire on vash but that's more for mood in my opinion. you could say it hints at zazie monitoring the sand steamer though
-we're probably going to hear "the desert rogue" again when the bad lads gang shows up in a future episode, possibly with a new arrangement for brilliant dynamites neon (this is one of my personal favorite tracks actually. it's a shame they didn't get to use the whole thing because 0:45 to the end is really cool)
-"boyhood" contains the EoM leitmotif and it's very in-your-face in this song (1:15-2:19). in the episode itself the track gets cut at around 2:10, but in the OST the piano motif from "orphanage" can be heard one more time right at the end of the song at 2:18-2:20. which is an evil thing to do. anyway
-"nicholas the punisher" is an arrangement of "reality". let that sit for a second, maybe go listen to those two tracks or something.
okay so we can look at this in a few different ways:
-> the end of episode 3 is of course a reality check, supported by the corresponding track being titled "reality" (even though it's fabricated by nai: to suggest and then prove to the people of no man's land that vash is indeed deserving of the $$6mil bounty; and to tell vash that his presence will pose a threat to humans). you know who else is supposed to be* grounded in reality? the pragmatic nicholas d wolfwood, who's introduced at the start of episode 4 *tristamp wolfwood hasn't quite found his resolve yet, as shown by his hesitation when livio appears
-> in the scene where "nicholas the punisher" is heard, vash is insistent on rescuing livio while wolfwood pushes back and says it's too late for him. he's clearly wishing he wouldn't have to eliminate livio though, and with "reality" as the foundation of this song, it presents wolfwood's inner turmoil in a new way for the audience: vash, who is physically right there trying to persuade him that there's still hope for his brother, vs his role as "nicholas the punisher" in sound, in his mind, and the "reality" that developed along with it (death is/can be a mercy, and sometimes it's necessary to sacrifice one life to save many)
(I also want to add that while legato's dialogue shows he intended for the orphanage to be eliminated through livio's death, it seems wolfwood didn't even realize that killing livio would mean more kids would be taken by the EoM for experimentation. he thought he had to choose between livio or the children, but it was a "test" of loyalty; and legato was attempting to obtain said loyalty by force)
-> outside of the episode, if you were to just listen to this track within the OST it's very representative of his character. contrary to "undertaker", which is fairly laid-back and....honestly kind of playful (and equally reflective of wolfwood's personality, when he's relaxed), "nicholas the punisher" is a more somber and contemplative piece. the fact that it's built on "reality" already suggests that he's someone whose beliefs conflict with vash's; and even without knowing that, both of wolfwood's themes contrast with the energy of "vash the stampede" quite clearly (even if I personally don't consider that track to be vash's official theme, it's still associated with him). I think it's really interesting that vash, the quieter one, has more raucous songs while wolfwood, the one with a sharp tongue, has calmer tracks :)
you might be wondering if "orphanage" is in "nicholas the punisher" and the answer is......yes, but actually, no. but kinda if you're delusional like me. this little pattern from 0:29-0:42 in "orphanage" is found in the low brass from 0:57-1:11 in "nicholas the punisher" (although it's in a different key and has a slight variation in the 2nd half). it's not quite the same, but both phrases start by going down a half step, then down a P5 interval (D->C#->F# for "orphanage", F->E->A for "nicholas the punisher"). lastly the sand steamer's leitmotif (I guess) is also present but that's. obviously because this is happening on the sand steamer lol
-"whom to kill, whom to let live" is just a faster/more tense arrangement of "orphanage" with saxophone over it. starting at 1:07 you can hear the worms leitmotif (1:31-1:34 in "worms network")
I can't say whether or not legato is already represented in the OST because he's currently not associated with any unique tracks, but they might tie the dissonant saxophone passage from "irritation" to him. it's first heard when legato stops wolfwood from escaping the facility, and as far as I can remember it's not played anywhere else. if he plays a bigger role in the next season, which I'm sure he will, I'll be keeping an ear out for this x) (I only mention the sax thing because I don't think he's represented by the sax solo that plays in "whom to kill, whom to let live")
EP7: -a little more of "the desert rogue" is heard when the bad lads make their way onto the sand steamer but it's very hard to make out over the gang yelling in the background lmao
-we're treated to the entirety of "human subject", for the scene where livio briefly returns to himself. if you somehow weren't convinced that those repeated 4 notes had anything to do with the eye of michael, this is the last instance where it's heard: the moment livio's overcome by whatever brainwashing was used on him by the EoM
-I think most people associate "time left" with ep12 but it's first played in this episode and I believe that it was primarily composed with the ion cannon sequence in mind (though a majority of the tracks in the OST only play once for specific scenes, with some songs being cut short and getting different parts played across 2+ episodes. "irritation" and "human subject" are examples of this)
EP8: -this one's a little hard to hear because the 1st note is implied in the C drone but vash's leitmotif starts at around 0:09 in "complicity" and runs all the way to 1:06
-it's also in "home" (1:38-1:57), playing at the moment luida hands vash the red coat :)
EP9: -I've talked about this before but I really like that there's 4(?) measures of polyrhythm (2 or more differing rhythmic lines that are played within the same time signature) when vash joins in, before the brothers come together on the same even rhythm. you can see how vash's quarter-note pattern doesn't line up with nai's quarter-note triplets, and in fact, neither of them ever land or start together:
Tumblr media
(for the sake of comprehension I wrote it out with a faster tempo to stretch the polyrhythm part over 8 bars instead of the slow tempo/4 bars. I'm not sure what the official tempo is. I think a sane person would write it at a faster tempo so that the part doesn't look stupidly cluttered but a good musician would be able to play it regardless. anyway-)
it sounds even more stilted because vash is playing on the offbeat. polyrhythm's such a great way to represent the brothers' relationship because it seems so chaotic but both lines are still in time together, following the same beats. they're so different but in the end they're still brothers who (are trying to) understand each other. and I love that vash is playing secondo, a more harmonic/supportive part, while knives has primo, where the melody/ornaments are. it says a lot about their personalities :')
since I don't know what the original sheet music looks like I can't say if this is true but you can hear that the plant song at 1:03 is played in octaves (2 notes that're the same pitch with one higher than the other). because of the nature of a duet, and the fact that this was played by the twins when they were little, the octaves were probably split between the parts. so vash was playing the lower octave of the plant song with his right hand, and nai played the upper octave with his left hand (we don't get to see this because it cuts to nai playing the song alone at that point). also: vash favors his right hand while nai favors his left
-now for something far less interesting: "last run" is a medley combining "ethics and morality", "compatriots", and "millions knives"
EP10: -"a cruel sight" seems to be unused. it was probably intended to lead into "bio-power reactor" in the scene where meryl and roberto meet elendira in the tank (given that it ends the same way "bio-power reactor" starts), but they cut it and just played a version of "bio-power reactor" without the melody
-elendira's themes ("elendira the crimsonnail" and "which is the monster?") seem to have some lyrics that're most audible in the beginning of the tracks but they're almost impossible to make out without some kind of editing software, which I don't have lol. they're already very quiet in the background and they echo, on top of sounding like they were put through autotune
also this is entering speculation territory but it makes me wonder if elendira's theme is going to evolve with her. we've seen some concept art with her having a more teenage appearance, so I think it'd be really cool if the vocals also changed accordingly
additionally she doesn't have the EoM leitmotif anywhere but she DOES have a proper 4-note chromatic pattern that descends from D in "which is the monster?" (1:32-1:35), which is the same note that the EoM leitmotif starts on. if we consider EoM's broken chromatic passage to represent the failed experiments, then elendira, with an actual chromatic passage in her theme, is a success
-"meryl's regrets" is ALSO an arrangement of "reality" :') this is the track that plays during roberto's final moment, which was. you know. the consequence of meryl running off in pursuit of the truth. the "reality" roberto had warned her about several times prior to episode 10. interestingly, while "nicholas the punisher" expands on the original track, "meryl's regrets" is a reduction--it's mostly just the baseline with some notes here and there. she doesn't have a theme yet, but 1:23-1:33 might be something we hear again if/when she gets a track associated with her
EP11: -"nicholas and meryl" is an arrangement of "boy and vash", with erhu echoing vash's leitmotif. I think it's a neat way to show through music that both of them are here because of vash :]
-the tracklist goes slightly out of order at this point for some reason. after "memory retrieval", "memory of geranium" is what plays in the final memory, when nai decapitates rem
EP12: -"memory of rem" is a combination of "childhood memories" and "memory of geranium". "childhood memories" is also found in "knives's piano", which is based on "duet". one fun way of interpreting this is that the "childhood memories" part of the duet is actually from rem, if she was the one who taught the twins how to play piano, which would make "duet" a musical representation of vash and nai's roots (pun intended. sorry). this also suggests nai misses rem, with how often he plays the piano, even if he thinks he hates her.
but "childhood memories" can also simply be seen as a theme that's associated with rem, nai, and vash's brief time together x)
-okay this is the part where I get to rant about "drain arm" because THIS SONG was literally the reason I decided I needed to rewatch stampede. I was listening to "drain arm" a couple weeks after the finale aired and I heard vash's leitmotif near the end and I was like "NO WAY!!!! HOW DID I MISS THAT"
as it turns out, it was cut from episode 12.
:)
not to worry though, I still have plenty to say about it. even if I'm a little disappointed. just. a little.
-> from 1:13-1:25, you can hear vash's leitmotif in the cello. this DID make it into the scene, and it plays when vash rises through the clouds
-> 2:44-3:10 is where some of the lyrics from vocal version of "millions knives" play: "remember how / we used to be / no turning back / sky's (skies??) falling down". although you can't actually hear the "remember how" in "drain arm" (at least not without blasting the song into your ears, which I don't recommend), it starts right when the image of vash and nai sitting in the geodome appears
-> we finally get the plant song at 3:36, when the condensed energy starts to leak out/charge. and then after it fires, but before nai dives into the beam, we hear "I still care for you" (3:44-3:52). and while it's originally from the vocal version of "millions knives", in the context of the scene I think it's a sentiment from both brothers: vash, who pleads for nai to let go and releases the energy away from him; and then knives, desperately reaching for the cube because he believes the success of his plan will ensure his family's (and especially his brother's) safety, the only ones he's ever cared about
in other words: plant song in cello = vash -> "I still care for you" -> continuation of plant song in low brass = knives. they're connected by this single sentence
-> knives's leitmotif (I didn't talk about it because it's only found in songs that signal his appearance, so it's really obvious, but yes he's got one of those) plays at 4:03 for the "nai is dead. you killed him" exchange
-> it goes back to a variation of the plant song at 4:29 (I LOVE the piano at 4:40-4:49 btw. it's so good. I could cry about it. probably)
if you've read my plant song analysis you might be wondering how to tell when it's being associated with the name millions knives instead of the plant race. since we know that a good chunk of the songs in the OST were written like a film score, the visual context (and/or the song titles themselves) can clue you in. "drain arm"'s use of the plant song is meant to highlight that vash and nai aren't human, so it's the latter
-> now here's the part that was removed, probably due to the runtime: vash's leitmotif in the cello again, from 5:03-5:09. if you revisit the part right before nai lets go of the cube, you'll hear that it skips these 6 seconds and goes straight to knives's theme ("but that's the plant song!" yes. we'll get to that in a sec). this missing bit right here?? fucks me up EVERY time. it's the most mournful his leitmotif has ever sounded, appropriately so, and it's absolutely criminal that it wasn't included. especially because knives's theme, the plant song melody, follows it up on violin as the cello continues to play a line in harmony.
and it's knives's theme because in this moment it's about him dying, not the plants. they spent a whole season tricking us into thinking that the plant song was knives's theme, and then they used it to send him off.
-> and then july city explodes o7
as much as I'd love to hear "drain arm" again for another chance to let the weight of vash's motif come through, I think it's too intertwined with this scene to be recycled. like. maaaaaaaybe they could use it for fifth moon if that's supposed to be the climax of the next part but they kinda?? already did the "fire a really big laser at the sky" thing? anyway yeah I'm totally normal about "drain arm". so normal
Extras: -the punisher and the double fangs have these cool sound effects when they transform and it kinda makes me think that their guns are built from lost tech, if the punisher's laser cannon wasn't evidence enough of this
-there's no equivalent of "sound life" in stampede, and I don't think there's going to be one. however, I do think that it would make a lot of sense if rem taught the boys how to play piano, because we could get something like:
-> rem asks vash about the plant song (the memory in ep12) -> she gives the boys piano lessons -> she helps them compose "duet"
-they didn't use "stampede out" for this season but I really hope we'll hear it in the next part. I know it's just a longer version of "escape" but it's a fun song :]
-this is. obvious but you can hear "gate" in "millions knives". no idea if they'll put "gate" into more songs, especially for vash now that he seems to have some control over it
-there's also something kinda fun with key signatures too: -> "millions knives" is in b minor -> vash's leitmotif is in d dorian (of course this changes depending on the key signature of whatever track it's used in) -> "undertaker" is also in d dorian -> I think songs associated with no man's land/humanity are usually in some dorian scale or specifically the key of a minor but this is solely based on jeneora rock since july city had its own unique theme so I'm not totally sure yet. "duet" is in a minor by the way -> "nicholas the punisher" is in d minor. if "undertaker" is tied to humanity (which is tied to vash) then "nicholas the punisher" is linked to the other side: knives, through the EoM. it adds another interesting layer to the contrast between wolfwood's two themes, but I don't consider this to hold any meaning lol -> I WILL say that b minor is the relative minor of D Major, so having knives and vash's songs be written in those keys was likely deliberate. and what makes it really interesting is that to get d dorian, you take a D Major scale and lower the 3rd and 7th notes by a half step
-I'm not 100% sure but I think plucked piano strings were used to create the low, scratchy string sound effect in some of the songs (one example is literally at the beginning of "irritation"). I think it's really cool that piano is everywhere in the soundtrack, but not necessarily by hitting the keys
-I am unbelievably excited for livio's/razlo's themes because they have the opportunity to do some REALLY COOL things with the music for them. we might not get them in part 2 (though I think we will) but whenever it happens I'll be so ready for it >:)
and that's all!! o(-< thank you for reading! if you actually took the time to go through all of this with the soundtrack pulled up, I'm. impressed. i think. anyway I'm a big fan of OSTs with strong storytelling and tristamp's OST is no exception :]
if you've got questions, feel free to ask ^^ I definitely didn't cover everything I just picked out whatever I thought was worth mentioning. which was uhhhh quite a bit x)
(also again if you're interested in reading the plant song analysis I did it's in the replies section of the notes 👍 I recommend reading it on a computer though)

y/n's days were usually peaceful.
or, that's what they used to be.
lately, they've been anything but that. not since what happened about a month ago…
your head snapped up when the words left neteyam's mouth. he looked nervous, his face carried a tight-lipped smile and his eyes were avoiding your own. and your silence wasn't making him feel any better. after what seemed like forever, you finally decided to speak. and coincidentally, neteyam decided to vocalize something at the same time.
"i can't accept this."
"i see you."
the two of you said in unison. after both pieces were spoken, the two of you stared at one another with wide eyes. you, shocked at his confession and neteyam, shocked at your rejection.
after the initial shock, neteyam was the first to speak.
"what? why not?" was the first thing he asked. he sounded upset and the look on his face didn't make you feel any less terrible for rejecting him.
"because this is serious. and i haven't done anything to deserve this." you said, putting the necklace back in his hands.
"y/n-"
you cut him off, "i didn't tell you my name for months, i avoided you every time i saw you, and i couldn't even understand when the great mother sent me a sign, two signs at that. so no, i can't accept this, because i don't deserve it."
once the words left your lips, a silence fell over the two of you. shaking your head, you started to get up from your seated position. a cool breeze washing over your calves and feet that were no longer immersed in the shallow water of the pond. you didn't even bother grabbing the half weaved anklet and you honestly didn't even care about it at the moment, you just wanted to leave. the last thing you wanted to do was deal with the aftermath of the now undoubtedly awkward situation you created.
neteyam watched you with a hurt expression. he really wasn't expecting this to be the reaction that he received. the worst case scenario was unfolding and he was having trouble wrapping his head around it.
but neteyam wasn't letting you walk away just yet. he was like his brother that way, never admitting defeat until it was absolutely necessary.
you had almost disappeared from his line of sight before he spoke up, making you stop in your tracks.
"i saw it." was all he said.
you turned around, looking at him in confusion. you wanted an explanation and he planned on giving you one, he just needed you to stop walking away first. neteyam stood up and began slowly walking towards you.
"i saw the atokirina that day, you thought i didn't see it but i did. i saw it." neteyam confessed, "i didn't understand what it meant at first so i went to talk to my grandmother to ask her about it. she helped me realize that you mean so much to me and maybe eywa was telling me that the two of us are meant to be something more for each other. i was originally going to wait until after i went through uniltaron to do this but once my mother told me you actually came to the marui to drop off my visor, that let me know that you are trying to be more open and that means a lot to me. so i knew now was the right time. i know you have your own reasons as to why you didn't tell me your name and you can explain when you're ready, but i don't care about that because nothing can get in the way of my feelings for you. i see you, y/n."
it was as if your brain went haywire. your mouth was parted slightly in surprise while your eyes began to water. there were so many things you had to process but didn't have enough time to. he saw the atokirina that day, so maybe it was a sign for the both of you. his speech also made you realize that he is willing to be patient with you even after you did everything in your power to push him away. even now, you tried to walk away from this situation. he wasn't giving up on you that easily. he wore his heart on his sleeve and now it was him that deserved an explanation, and you were finally ready to give it to him.
you let out a sigh, "i.. i never really liked attention. being the sibling that nobody really knew about. it was more peaceful that way. and so when you, the son of the olo'eytkan wanted to be my friend, i knew that would draw attention. attention that i didn't want. so i thought if you didn't know my name and if we didn't speak at high camp, i could still have a sense of normalcy while being your friend."
neteyam didn't say anything, he just stared at you as you continued to explain.
"but you mean so much to me and i realize that not only was i taking you for granted, i was also pushing you away. and i apologize for that." you sent him a small smile, hoping your explanation made sense.
for a moment, the sound of nature was the only thing that could be heard. neteyam began to walk closer towards you. his steps got smaller as you two were now nearly chest to chest. he then took your face into his hands, softly caressing your cheeks as he looked into your eyes.
the close proximity was intimate and you had no choice but to look into his eyes as well. and in that moment, you felt a sense of comfort and normalcy. like this is supposed to be your new normal.
neteyam smiled softly, "there's nothing to apologize for. i see you."
"and i see you." you breathed out, a smile stretching across your face once you said the words.
neteyam smiled before leaning in, bringing your lips together. you wasted no time in responding to the kiss. it was slow, but that's all it had to be. it was passionate and that's all that matters.
once you pulled away neteyam took a step back, "are you going to accept my gift now?"
you laughed and nodded, "yeah of course."
he smiled before motioning for you to turn around. you did so and lifted your braided hair so he could secure the necklace around your necklace. while he was doing so you suddenly remembered something.
"you know, i went to the tsahìk to ask her about the atokirina too."
"really?" you couldn't see but neteyam had an amused expression on his face.
you nodded and he shook his head, "that's probably why she looked amused when i explained everything to her. because you had already told her."
"hey, i needed answers and she's wise."
"that she is."
it's been a month since that day and you and neteyam have been moving at a pace comfortable for the both of you. you've been getting closer while still keeping some things the same such as still hanging out in the forest and going on ikran rides together. the only difference is you're now romantically involved with one another.
but your presence within the clan definitely changed. thanks to your big mouth sister, the entire clan now knows that neteyam is officially courting you.
now, everywhere you go, people are either staring at you or trying to speak to you. it was like you were suddenly the main focus to everyone. most people didn't even know you existed so they were curious to see who the future olo'eyktan was supposedly planning to mate with.
dealing with all the attention was very stressful at first. you didn’t want to leave your marui because of all the people that would stare at you. but of course, neteyam helped you get through it and eventually, you got somewhat used to it. it still did bother you though, but you tried your best not to think about it too much.
Tumblr media
today is a very important day. today is the day that neteyam finally goes through his final rite of passage before he finally earns his place among the people forever.
uniltaron is a rite of passage that all omatikayan people are required to go through. even though it was a significant tradition in omatikayan culture, that didn’t stop it from being dangerous.
the first step of uniltaron was for the tsahìk to place a eltungawng into the navi’s mouth. this glow worm gave the na’vi the ability to hallucinate. then the olo’eyktan would take a kali'weya and have it stab the na’vi twice in the shoulder. the venom from the kali'weya mixed with the compound from the glow worm gives the na'vi the opportunity to experience their vision from eywa. but, the venom from the arachnoid was powerful enough to completely stop someone's heart. there have been na’vi people that have died during the ritual. the occurrence was rare but, never impossible.
your uniltaron happened about two months before you met neteyam. it usually took hunters/warriors longer to go through the rite of passage because he had to complete other things before reaching this destination. since your place in the clan is being an artisan, all you had to do was tame an ikran beforehand. neteyam on the other hand had other tasks to handle first.
even though you made it through okay, that didn't mean you weren't scared and nervous at first. and you were feeling those exact same emotions for neteyam.
during the ritual, there are other clan members surrounding the na'vi that is going through uniltaron. these clan members are usually people that are close to them. meaning family, friends, and partners. since you and netetyam are now promised to each other, that meant you were going to be in attendance.
your palms were slightly clammy and your stomach was in knots as you walked through high camp. and because your nerves were at all time high, you barely noticed the couple of people that turned their heads at the sight of you.
once you got to your destination, you peaked your head in the marui that the sullys resided in. seeing that they were all there. tuk seated on the ground, messing around with her hexapede toy. lo'ak and spider were in their own world, holding a conversation of their own. your eyes scanned the room before finally landing on the boy you came for.
neteyam was seated while his dad kneeled down in front of him, talking to him. his body language looked serious so you assumed that he was most likely giving him a lecture or a pep talk for what was to come. jake is the one that has to do the part that frightened you the most. beside him was neytiri and kiri, they were preparing the white body paint that would go on both his face and body.
you decided to finally make your presence known. you walked in and everyone’s head went up, seeing who just walked in. luckily, everyone greeted you with smiles.
neteyam had properly introduced you to all of them a week after he began courting you. the two of you knew that there would be a lot of questions and demands your families would have so the first week was just you and neteyam. enjoying your time together before everyone knew. when you told your family a week later, they all said they had a hunch. they noticed the necklace that resided around your neck and knew something was up because it wasn't crafted nearly as well as your usual accessories. they were just waiting on you to say something
kiri was the only sully that knew for the entire week since neteyam told her your answer the night he got home. she was happy for her brother, happy that he found someone. she was also delighted that she was able to help make the necklace for you.
when neteyam told the rest of the family, tuk smiled and said she was happy for him, which was expected. spider started laughing, turning his head to his lo'ak and telling him that he owed him a ride on his ikran. lo'ak started objecting, telling spider that he didn't win the bet because they haven't mated yet. neteyam shook his head, not even surprised they made a bet.
his parent, on the other hand, were surprised. they knew their son had some type of romantic feeling towards you but wasn't sure if he was bold enough to act on it. they were a little skeptical at first, not knowing if he was serious enough about this and if he was making the right decision. but after having a conjoined dinner with both of your families, it was clear to jake and neytiri and your parents that you and neteyam were very serious. mo'at had even said that she saw something special with the two of you. after that, they were more than happy to welcome you into the family.
and it wasn't long before your sister started running her mouth to everyone in high camp, telling them about you and neteyam. she was mainly the reason why and how the entire clan found out rather quickly.
while you began to hang out with kiri more, neteyam hung out with nanti a lot more. nanti and neteyam had a general sense of respect for one another so it didn't much for them to get along.
but being accepted by the sullys meant a lot to you so it warmed your heart that they were more than happy to have you around.
as you walked over to neteyam, you greeted jake properly. he was still the olo'eyktan and you wanted to be respectful. he greeted you back before giving neteyam a firm pat on the shoulder. he then stood to his feet and walked away. neteyam smiled as you sat down in the spot jake was once in.
"good morning, yawne." neteyam smiled.
you blushed at the pet name, "good morning teyam."
your eyes shifted to neytiri, who had just finished making the paint with kiri.
"i can do it, if that's okay." you say to neytiri, motioning towards the bowl. she looks at you before smiling and handing it to you.
she and kiri stand, walking away as well. you then dipped your fingers into the white paint before applying to neteyam's face in a series of patterns.
"are you nervous?" you asked him, briefly making eye contact with your boyfriend.
"not really. i mean i've been preparing for this my whole life." he answered honestly, "i can tell that you are though." he laughed.
"it's not funny." you frowned as you dipped your fingers back in the paint, now placing the patterns on his neck and collarbone area.
"i just don't want anything bad to happen."
"i know you're scared of the kali'weya but nothing is going to happen, i promise." neteyam spoke, bending his head a little to make eye contact with you since your eyes were focused on his neck.
"you can't promise something like that."
he leaned in and placed a kiss on your forehead, "well i just did, tute asevin."
you smiled softly before the sound of gagging took you out of your trance. you and neteyam turned your heads to see lo'ak and spider fake gagging as they watched and listened to your conversation.
“you can’t promise something like that.” spider said in an over-exaggerated feminine voice.
lo'ak then licked his lips, puckering up and then kissing the air dramatically which neteyam rolled his eyes at, "well i just did, tute asevin."
"you two are insufferable." you laughed.
"and you guys make me sick." lo'ak rebutted.
you and neteyam waved them off before continuing your conversation. once you finished applying the paint to neteyam's body, it was time to go.
Tumblr media
uniltaron never took long. the ritual itself took maybe an hour if that. but right now, it felt like hours. you sat in a circle with the neteyam's family, as well as your sister while neteyam sat in the middle of the circle. since neteyam now considered nanti a close friend, she was also in attendance. your parents were happy that their two most antisocial children were actually venturing out and being more open.
the ritual had begun and it played out just how you remembered. neteyam had consumed the eltungawng and it was taking effect rather quickly. you watched intently as his father took the kali'weya out of the bowl it was residing in. your breath hitched as it stabbed neteyam twice in the shoulder.
you gasped as the boy groaned as he hissed and doubled over, placing his hands on the ground in front of him. the tsahìk began fanning smoke towards him as everyone in the circle began to sing a traditional na'vi song. you sung the song as you stared at neteyam with concern. he was still in the position from before. you tried not to panic because you remember the pain that it causes but you couldn't help it.
after a few moments, neteyam sat up, which you were relieved. the singing continued as he had his vision from eywa. once the ritual was over, you thanked the great mother for allowing him to get through the ceremony safely.
after the effects of the insects wore off eventually and he was back to normal, the entire clan gathered at the vitraya ramunong. jake recited a saying before declaring neteyam as one of the people. he then placed both of his hands on neteyams' shoulders. mo'at did the same and everyone followed in pursuit, holding onto the shoulders of the person in front of them. you held onto the shoulders of kiri and nanti placed her hands on yours.
once that was completed, everyone returned to high camp for the celebration. so far everyone was having a great time. people were singing and dancing as the music from the blue flute played. there was food and drinks. parties like this were always nice.
you didn't want to be glued to neteyam's side for the entire night, especially since a lot of people were going up and talking to him. he respected that you didn't really want to be that social so you both agreed to meet at the tree of souls again after the party was over.
"yo i got us something!" lo'ak exclaimed as he rushed over to where you, spider, tuseÿa, and ri'an were sitting.
"what?" tuseÿa asked, looking at him weirdly. once it was out that you and neteyam were serious, tuseÿa had to let go of her crush on lo'ak, reluctantly doing so but she loved you and neteyam together.
lo'ak grinned before handing swoaseys to all of you. you took the swoasey from his hands and looked in it, it had some type of liquid in it. you went ahead and smelled it. the strong smell of naer filled your nostrils.
"lo'ak who gave this to you?" you asked, grimacing at the smell of the beverage. you were old enough to drink naer but the rest of the teenagers around you definitely weren't.
"sanari snuck me some. all i had to do was tell her she has pretty eyes." lo'ak laughed as he drank the liquid from his small bowl. you have drank naer before but you weren't really fond of the taste so you didn't drink it often. and to your surprise, all the teens around you downed their cups with ease.
"is there something i'm missing or?" you asked as you looked at them in confusion.
tuseÿa laughed, "we've all drank before y/n, what do you think we do when we're out with our friends at night."
"well i don't like naer so one of you can have mine." you said, outstretching your hand with the swoasey in it. lo'ak went to grab it when a hand came out of nowhere and took it from you. you looked up to see kiri holding it, staring at lo'ak.
"unless you want to be drunk in front of mom and dad, i suggest you calm down with the drinks." she glared at him. lo'ak rolled his eyes and in response as kiri sat down beside you.
"hey." you greeted her.
she looked at you and smiled, "hey y/n, why are you hanging out with these losers and not my brother?"
"hey!" the teenagers all exclaimed. she ignored them as she awaited your answer.
"this night is all about him so i wanted him to enjoy it. also there's a lot of people coming up to him and you know how i am."
"well he looks like he's losing his mind without you." she laughed, lifting her hand and pointing in a certain direction.
you followed her finger to see neteyam talking to two men. they were both built and wore cummerbunds so you assumed that they were both hunters. you were surprised to see that neteyam was staring at you as he was conversing with them. a smile crept on your face and he smiled back before looking away.
"he's so fucking whipped bro!" lo'ak shook his head, speaking english.
Tumblr media
after a while, the music being played on the blue flute had come to a stop and the party ended. many na'vi were intoxicated as they stumbled their way back to their marui's. others had their kids sleeping in their arms from being up so late and others said goodbye and goodnight to their friends.
it was now time for you to meet neteyam at vitraya ramunong. you quickly went to your marui to grab something you had made a couple days ago. as you were making your way to the ikrans, you unexpectedly bumped into a figure, causing you to drop the item in your hand.
"oh i'm so sorry!" you rushed out, looking up noticing that you bumped into jake.
"it's all good y/n, let me get that for you." he bent down and picked up the item. once it was in his hand he stared it before looking at you, "did you make this for neteyam?"
you nodded, a little nervous of what his reaction would be. after a moment of silence, a smile etched onto his face. it was small but it was still there nonetheless.
"you're a good kid, y/n. and i know you make neteyam happy. you'll make a great tsahìk one day." he spoke before handing you what you dropped and walked away. you were frozen in your spot. a great tsahìk? did he think that highly of you? well, you are promised to the future olo'eyktan but it didn't really hit you that you were technically the next tsahìk of your beloved clan.
you managed to walk to your ikran despite the shock still evident in your face. you mounted your banshee and flew to the tree of souls. you landed in a spot that most ikrans resided when there were gatherings here.
neteyam was already there. he had his kuru connected to a few of the bioluminescent vines that hung from the beautiful tree. when he heard the screech of your ikran, he disconnected from the tree and watched as you got off your banshee and made your way over to him.
once you were close enough, neteyam rushed over to you and swiftly picked you up off your feet and spun you around.
"hello to you too." you giggled once he put you back on the ground.
"i missed you." he said, resting his forehead against yours.
"it was only a couple hours."
"i know but i wanted to spend the entire night with you. but i know you would've been uncomfortable with the amount of people that were coming up to me." he says, backing away from you so he could see your face better. he went to grab both of your hands and noticed you holding something.
"what's that?" neteyam asked.
you looked at the item he was talking about, "ok so as a gift for completing your final rite of passage, i made you your very first cummerbund." you handed it to him.
neteyam's eyes lit up as he took it from your hands. no surprise that it was neatly woven and the patterns were well put together. he looked up from the cummerbund and threw his arms around you.
"thank you so much yawne, this means a lot."
"you're welcome." you smiled as he began putting it on, "your dad told me that i would make a good tsahìk one day."
neteyam paused, looking up from the accessory and at you. he held a look of shock on his face. he didn't know that his father thought that highly of you.
"really? how does that make you feel?" was the first thing he asked. he wanted to put your feelings at the forefront of the conversation.
you noticed neteyam's fingers fumbling with making sure the cummerbund was on securely. you moved closer to him and made sure it was on correctly.
"i was honestly surprised, i hadn't really thought about it before." you answered honestly.
"if you do not wish to be tsahìk then you don't have to be."
"i know.. but is it something that you want for us?" you looked up at him.
"i'm fine with whatever you're comfortable with. so don't worry about what i want." neteyam reassured you. you gave him a warm smile before stepping back, looking at the cummerbund hug his stomach.
"it looks good on you." before you could take another breath, neteyam grabbed your hand and pulled you back towards him. your chests now pressed each other.
neteyam used a finger to bring your face closer to his. his lips ghosted over yours. your eyes fluttered shut, drinking in this moment of intimacy.
"all thanks to you." he muttered before placing his lips on your own. the kiss felt like any other kiss the two of you shared. gentle and affectionate. lips moving in sync as the environment around you glowed in different hues of blue, purple, and green.
you were the first to pull away, giggling when neteyam's lips chased your own. you looked at him, admiring his face as his bioluminescent dots glowed in the night.
"now that you've gone through your final rite of passage, we can finally.. you know.." you trailed off, hoping neteyam would get the hint.
and judging from how his eyes widened, he definitely did.
"are you sure? you know we can wait."
you nod your head, "i want this. i want to be with you."
neteyam physically felt his heart swell at your words. he brought his hand up to your face and caressed your cheek, "oel ngati kameie."
"oel ngati kameie." you leaned into his touch.
the two of you then reached for your kuru's before bringing them over your shoulders. the hair at the end of the braid moving to the side as the pink tendrils made themselves visible. you looked at neteyam who was holding his kuru, looking like he was waiting for your approval. you gave him a confident nod and brought your kuru closer to his.
once they were close enough, the tendrils in your neural queues connected with one another. your mouth dropped as you felt a sense of euphoria washing over you. you felt like you had to catch your breath. once doing so, your eyes locked with neteyam who looked like he was feeling the same emotions as you. you leaned in and pulled him into a passionate kiss.
you and neteyam were now mated for a lifetime.
a lifetime you couldn't wait to live.

SAGAU: My Style
Back at it again with sharing my personal ideas with the Self-Aware Genshin AU. I don't see myself writing a full-on fanfic about it because I do NOT trust myself with characterizing everybody properly, and some of the ideas I have in mind wouldn't make for a good universal experience for all, if that makes sense. So, instead, I'll just stick to pitching like I'm at a silly ol' business meeting and providing a simply layout. Now, keep in mind, this is going to focus more on my rendition of an Imposter AU specifically, which means I'm also going to do a little nitpicking of some common tropes in it that I find could be done better or even differently. It won't be me saying that anybody who writes them in the traditional sense is bad or doing a bad job, just what I'd do differently. So, without further ado, check out my mish-mushed ideas below the cut:
It all starts with the Creator Themsleves, aka, us. Or, rather, us before we became us. Not making sense? That's fine, but lemme delve into that a little better. Game lore-wise for this AU, there actually was a fully existing, fully breathing Creator that's been around since even before the Archons (but not by too much; Zhongli's still no spring chicken in spite of this). Yes, they did create Teyvat and all that's good in it like the flora, the fauna, and the creatures, and they had a close bond with said Archons not just as people serving, advising, and worshipping their God/ruler, but also in a legitimate friendship (so, no, they're not 100% subservient or gutless ass-kissers-- it's more of an equal dynamic). Maybe one Archon of your choice (within reason) being close enough to the point of being (secret) lovers, if you'd like. Such explains the Archons' deep attachment to the Creator, and their eagerness to see them again after tragedy-- like, say, the Cataclysm that razed Khaenri'ah-- renders them comatose and not to awaken again until present day. Until then, the Creator's body lies safely in sleep like Princess Aurora within their main temple/palace, occasionally visited by their old companions (minus Ei, who's in her hidey-hole until the Inazuma AQ's, but that goes without saying).
But, just before they do wake up, here comes a little (presumably Celestia-sent) POS known as the Imposter, who worms their way into the temple where the Creator lies, steals their garbs and replaces them with normal, less divine attire before sending their body far away apparently never to be seen again and lying on that resting spot acting as the Creator on the verge of waking up. And since no one knows what really happened, it looks like the promised day has come without issues, and the Imposter is welcomed by nearly all back to a throne that never actually belonged to them. As for the actual Creator... they're in good hands, because Teyvat would never mistake another for the All-Parent that breathed life into it and acts to protect their body hidden amidst nature in whatever region they landed in (your choice) until they really do wake up.
And when our in-game body does wake up, our real-life consciousness is transferred into it and overwrites our old, godly memories with our normal ones. Since I can't stand isekais that require us dying an early death IRL (like, at all, actually), we're either magically transported to Teyvat the old-fashioned magic way, or part of our consciousness goes into our in-universe body and leaves our physical forms in reality alone, thereby creating two versions of us going around two separate worlds. For better wording, that is, but that's the gist of it. Either way, we're the real deal Creator, but one without our old memories (apart from short visions we get of our old divine life that come up every now and again) as far as everyone else in Teyvat is concerned. They're not totally wrong, anyway. I was thinking this could be justified to everyone by our "past self" saying pre-slumber that they will reawaken without the knowledge of this world (aka, the Genshin one), but it will still very much be them/us.
By the way, when we stumble into the main town or city of whatever region we wound up in, the locals don't just immediately attack us for looking like the Imposter. While sometimes, I do enjoy kicking back and enjoying pure angst, I otherwise found that aspect of Villain/Imposter!SAGAU to be, comment dit-on... absurd, especially with nobody in Mondstadt (outside of that one nun not buying it and simply scolding him) giving two honks about Venti despite him looking like (being) Barbatos, and nobody in Liyue even noticing the resemblance between Zhongli and Rex Lapis/Morax. And given how much those nations revere their god, the argument of us being a higher deity cannot be made. So, instead, at absolute worst, people are just really unnerved by the uncanny resemblance we have to the Creator, but otherwise don't get alarmed... until the Imposter catches wind of us and changes that. The reason people start attacking us at all is because the Imposter weaves a forewarning of the Creator's antithesis equal to them in power known as the "Destroyer" will descend on Teyvat, attempt to steal the throne using the Creator's face, and do worse to the world than the Abyss Order ever could try to if not stopped. And, this may sound like something they just made up to get us killed, but in a way... it's true, only issue is that the acolytes + citizens have the wrong idea of who's who, of course. Plus, the actual, all-powerful Creator, if pushed too far by say... an incredibly lengthy and traumatic manhunt after being mistaken for the Destroyer, is capable of tearing the world limb from limb, because those who create can as easily destroy, but those who destroy can never create.
Speaking of "all-powerful"... why are we always completely powerless in these SAGAU works apart from crying and/or getting really angry (which ARE realistic and valid reactions to the shit we're going through, but it's not mutually exclusive to getting cool abilities)? Because we're not actually from Teyvat? Even Aether and Lumine have the power to wield the elements despite coming from somewhere else, and for us to not get that same honor is frankly dull as dishwater. That's a lot of missed potential to dip into the fantasy aspect of a fantasy game like Genshin Impact. It's here I'd like to take some inspiration from a show I've enjoyed for years known as none other than "Avatar: The Last Airbender". Not to mention, the term "avatar" generally refers to a "divine incarnation in human form", hello??? Ahem! In other words, instead of being completely incapable of defending ourselves, we-- being the almighty Creator-- are able to wield all seven elements at once, but we have to gradually learn how to effectively use and master them. We do start with one element (any of your choice), then work our way up in order of the loading screen. IE: say your element is Cryo, you'd have to go Geo -> Pyro -> Hydro -> Anemo -> Electro -> Dendro. Such was the same in our past life, but we had the Archons to teach us and help us master those abilities through time.
Which means now, we need other people to help us do it again in our new "incarnation", and that's in the form of 5-star Vision holders since they fit the bill of "master" a bit better, being the rarer, stronger characters and junk. Of course, this is likely with discretion, because some might not be wise to learn from (such as Klee, funny as that'd be). I'm also discounting learning from the Archons because not only has our time with them from the previous life passed, but I don't find it fair to learn from a powerful god of that element, even if we're a god ourselves. It's more balanced learning from someone beneath that level (so, yes, an adeptus would still qualify). Also, important note here: not every single playable character is going to try and kill us for the Creator-Destroyer thing. NPCs are one thing because, let's be real, they're sheep, but it isn't realistic or in-character for everybody playable to want us dead. While a fair chunk would probably be on board for the sake of not letting the world blow to smithereens (and not because, you know, Same Face Syndrome, because that's completely insane), some might not outright believe the alleged prophecy for one reason or another, such as not being fond/trusting enough of the apparent "Creator" to just listen to them right off the bat, or getting to already find out who the real Creator is and knowing we're not the enemy. Whatever the reason is, we're going to have allies, including ones that join us in our quest to defeat the Imposter and take back the throne to restore balance to Teyvat. This can also include those who initially sided with the Imposter, but for one reason or another such as seeing our gold blood, they have a change of heart and tag along for the ride. For us to just go about Teyvat on the lam with nobody having our back is just... depressing, and not even in the fun way, either. I understand this faction of SAGAU tends to be purely angst-based, but come on, it doesn't have to all be a total bummer all the time. There's no rule that says we can't go through the angsty, heartwrenching stuff with traveling companions to call our own there for us through it all.
Now, of course, whoever those traveling companions are is really up to you because not all of us are gonna wanna tag up with and learn from the same bitches as the next guy. So, it's anybody's game with anybody's reasoning and circumstances (such as which region we wake up in, who our first companion(s) would be there, then which region we move onto, and even what element we have to learn next). Also, fitting the max. number of characters you can have on one team, it'd just be four actively traveling alongside us through Teyvat with other allies remaining where they are, whether they helped us master an element or not. But, no matter anybody's personal tastes and choices, I really wish there was more of a thrilling "fantastical group adventure" kind of element to this genre of SAGAU, because the potential is there, just-- seldom reached, from what I've seen, personally. I'd be more than happy adding onto this with anything I might have missed, but that's basically the gist of my view of this AU.

gwen is going to be a nervous wreck after this and everyone's going to be soooo confused.
are we thinking the bonzo thing was the suit itself being cursed or was it just this Thing that made itself? much to think about
so much happened in this episode I don't even know where to start to be honest

just wanted to say I'm really liking this au so far, mike's character breakdown is so fun and I just wanted to thank you for a part of it! when I first read that he wasn't good with guns I deflated a little because I thought oh, it's another incompetent mike and macho will situation 😞 but the fact he's not good with guns because that's a NERF, and he's otherwise actually competent, respectable, intelligent, commanding, just - mike wheeler himself - made me really happy! that's a fun take, and I appreciated the effort in how you used the dnd charts etc too it's so cool!
it makes me look forward to the other character intros, and I already loved how sweet will looked in the party line up art even while holding a gun 😂 idk if you plan to have him only embrace the skill because it's necessary and not entirely what he likes, or something else, but I just liked that kinda contrast in the art regardless it made me giggle
oh also: "would never hesitate to do something deplorable to protect the party: family first" <- iconic. I can see the ruthlessness already I love you mike that's our leader, kind badass boy
this ask made me squeal and kick my feet like five times so thank you for that LMAO
i'm so happy that you (and others) have been enjoying the mike characterization i've put out for this au :"D i put a ton of thought into all of them and i'm having a lot of fun! mike in canon seems to be one of the most intelligent characters in the show, closely rivaled to dustin in making plans and having them go right, so him being incompetent is like an oxymoron.
there's a reason he's the leader of the group, and when people paint him as incompetent and / or babygirlified (in the "damsel, innocent, weak, must protect" sense) because he's played by finn or because he has terrible physical capabilities, it kinda makes me annoyed. so what if he's weak physically? he's still the one who actively squares up to people even when he knows he's about to get his ass beat :P he is the one who puts everything into action. his intuition and plans are correct most, if not all the time, and it pisses me off when people undermine that to try to fit him into someone who needs to be saved.
of course, in this au, his weaknesses more lie in his emotional incapabilities rather than survival. he isn't the best physically either, but that doesn't mean he can't do anything (its the apocalypse - he had to have learned something at some point).
the pressure that bears down on him in this au isn't based on society, and more related to the fact that he sees himself as the sole "caretaker" for the group. being put in charge of the lives of five other people followed by your own is scary as hell, and he doesn't really have an outlet for the pressure he faces until he enters that fwb relationship with will. that's an entirely different can of worms though so i'll stop with that for now!
i'm actually so happy that you mentioned how sweet i drew will in his design <3 will's character sheet will be posted tmrw so hopefully it will make sense why i drew him the way i did. i hope that my explanation regarding the rifle makes sense and does his character justice! him being good with guns was also a way for him to bond with lucas and explore his character a bit - it'll be explained later :O
and abt that last line regarding his ruthlessness... in all of the group's backstories, they all had people outside of the party that very much helped shape their identity and how they act. all i'll say is that mike is very much influenced by nancy in the moral compass department >:)

Can you explain/expand on can “be two lizards sometimes if you pick it up wrong”? I’m really hoping you just mean sometimes you don’t realize there are actually multiple lizards when going to pick one up, but with how strange some animals can be, I don’t want to assume
I do not, I'm afraid - most lizards of this size can practice autotony, which is the ability to just self-amputate a limb in a pinch to distract predators. In this case, the tail. All three UK lizard species, if picked up by the tail, will just detach from it and leave their extraneous body pieces behind, all the better to leg it to safety while the predator eats it. They can also then grow the limbs back, but that takes a LOT of resources and comes with an infection risk. Plus, it looks proper painful, like. It's real gross.
If you work with reptiles here you therefore have to be trained to pick them up properly, so you get the body. Not so bad with the leggy Bois, but it's harder with slow worms because the lack of legs means you can't see where the tail begins.

I've been really enjoying your fic and it got me curious about how your campaign went??? I got the important parts (your Durge denied Bhaal, Shadowheart spared nightsong I think, Astarion obviously didn't ascend) but what else happened? Will we ever see any of the other companions?
Thanks for enjoying the story! I can say with pretty much certainty we won't be seeing any other canonical characters from the game, Jaheira, Minsc and Halsin would have stayed behind in Baldur's Gate, as well as Wyll. My Durge killed Lae'zel early in the game and Karlach also died at the end of my campaign.
Gale's character decided to go after the crown, and while he was the staple fourth member of my party the relationship had always been uh... Tense. This was before they apparently patched out how needy he was, but frankly it made for a really interesting story since i just kind of assumed his character was kind of a creep wearing a nice-guy's face. Also, to be fair, I DID fall for his "wanna see a magic trick" line but that just kindled the fire to my theory that he's actually a fairly manipulative person (and perhaps he's unaware of it). MIND YOU PLEASE that this doesn't mean i don't like his character - honestly i feel like I got a REALLY interesting side of him in my campaign and i wouldnt have it any other way - this was a party composed of the dark urge, Astarion, Shadowheart and GALE and to have us all turn down power and glory only for the goody-two-shoes wizard of the camp to turn kinda evil and power-hungry made for a really satisfying narrative.
... Sorry i ended up rambling about Gale LOL to actually answer the rest of your question, my campaign went like this:
I made a Fighter, champion sub-class, BIG hulking drow because i thought it would be funny. Because i went in blind I started off as a confused homicidal murderer who is a liiiittle weirded out about his urges but he doesnt stress TOO much about it. Is fairly standoffish and distrusting toward all of his companions which made for a weird start. Motivated by gold, killing things, getting this worm out his head and making off-color jokes. Ends up siding with the Tieflings because i also decided that, as a very hedonistic character who thinks we should be lunatics because we want to rather than because a cult is telling us to be, my durge would profoundly hate the absolute. As a male drow he also really hated Minthara so yeah, easy choice there. As mentioned above, I also killed Lae'zel when she tried to murder-suicide everybody.
I wasn't going to fuck anyone, believe it or not, so during the tiefling party i went with Gale because it SEEMED like he just wanted to show me something neat (it ended early because i failed his checks and i guess he can't get hard unless i can cast fireball). Also, at this point even though i made mostly "good" moral choices i *was* still a dick the whole time - despite this, everyone in camp wanted to fuck me BESIDES Astarion, which was so fucking funny and devastating that I decided my Durge would, from that moment on, turn on the charm and the flattery and make it his mission to bang him. So yes, they were manipulating each other. I don't have to explain why that made for a really really fun little dynamic. Also Astarion had to tell me he was a vampire through dialogue instead of biting me and i got to say "yeah duh" which was hysterical.
I finally banged him sometime during the underdark (didn't go to the creche at all) and during Act 2 I followed the same pattern of doing mostly the Good Thing while being arrogant the whole time, I fell into a kind of chaotic-neutral/true-neutral aligment and watched my little homicidal maniac cluelessly stumble his way into a hero's journey. I had also really grown to like Shadowheart at that point after having a really negative first impression of her character and she basically became my durge's best friend. Astarion also grew on me for all the reasons we know and love and he did his confession to me sometime in late act 2. I Never met Araj (though i think i mention her in the fan story only because her interaction is interesting) so I got the dialogue that isn't prompted by her encounter. I also had to "break up" with Gale at this point which boy that sure came as a surprise to me! I also didnt break the shadow curse.
Because I didnt kill isobel (Again, my guy didnt like people telling him what to do or not to do), my little butler guy made me wanna kill Astarion. I SWEAR this happened pretty late in game, maybe even in the first night in baldur's gate which i realize is unusual. Naturally I didnt and I decided that would be the turning point where my Durge decides to not just Go With The Flow of things but actively fight his urge and pursue its root cause. He tried to be more of a good person from that point on which was kind of a clumsy effort lol
He completely antagonized the emperor immediately upon him revealing his true identity, stole the orphic hammer from Raphael's house, betrayed Gortash after setting an "alliance" with him, killed Orin (she kidnapped the orphan and killed her in front of me because i failed the check :| ) stopped Astarion from ascending and helped Shadowheart kill everyone in the house of grief, i let her make her own choice regarding her parents and she decided to kill them. I also encouraged her to not immediately align with the Selunites just because of her past.
I got Astarion the thing that helps him read the necromancy book and i cannot tell you how satifyins it was that, after giving up unspeakable power by killing Cazador, that dude and his little ghoul army basically mauled Orin and her grandad for me practically by themselves while I was down on the floor with 1 health. PROUD OF YOU BUDDY.
Gale spoke to Mystra as well at some point and i swear I NEVER encouraged that guy to take the crown for himself. It was always either "do whatever you want" or "i think thats a shitty idea." At this point my Durge was super sick of him so they had a bit of a crappy relationship which may have something to do with how things turned out.
I betrayed the emperor, released Orpheus and when he asked if any of us wanted to be a mindflayer i went "Fuck No" big time and luckily the guy just did it for me. Chaos ensues, I kill the emperor and the absolute in an epic battle that took me like a whole day. I also killed Orpheus when he asked me to. Karlach died ( :c ) and Gale told me he was gonna fuck off to get the crown. In the final Astarion dialogue I told him we would find a way to get him to walk under the sun again.... AAAAAnd thats it i think? Man this game is huge lmao i swear i wasnt trying to be long-winded.

Tumblr media
@theiaphage ok i'm just going to make this into a post because tumblr replies have a really short character limit and i can go on At Length while im explaining alec vasil. the short answer is that:
Brian, Lisa and Taylor had their own dynamic.  They were friends.  He considered Brian a friend, but it was more along the lines of someone he could play video games with, talk about movies.  It wasn’t much different from if they were coworkers or roommates.  He smiled at the thought.  They kind of were, when it came down to it. Regent knew he was a background character, for the most part.  He played along, he didn’t make waves, he didn’t stand out.  He wasn’t close to any of the others.
(interlude 10) alec knows exactly where he stands with the team--i.e., that he's not close friends with anyone, and his relationship with brian is 'work friend i could talk about movies with.' there's no actual intimacy there, and he knows this, and he wouldn't cross the boundary of inserting himself into brian's personal home life to fuck with his car for A Bit.
the longer answer re what his dynamic with brian and aisha is actually like after she joins the team is this entire post which is good and i love. it's a crucial cornerstone of alec's character that he's deeply lonely. that's why his power is the ability to force people to help him or act like they care about, with the ironic twist that he can't force them to actually care about him, and he's aware how much they hate him the entire time. his entire life, he's been lonely and isolated and abused, he's been taught that no one will ever deeply care about him or want to support him, and he's learned his only options are either to be like his father and take it by force, or to just live as "a background character" and try to convince himself that he's okay with that.
so, it's meaningful for him that he has a light friendship with brian. it's not enough to change how isolated he is, it's not enough to change that he's not part of the more emotionally intimate brian-lisa-taylor dynamic he mentions. but it's a crumb of affection for a boy who's had virtually none for his entire life.
after he meets aisha, what i describe in the linked post happens:
brian doesn't get to be a teenage boy playfighting with another teenage boy anymore--now he has to be Brian Adultguy Laborn, Responsible, Firm-Handed Older Brother. he feels the need to place himself above alec & aisha, become an authority figure capable of keeping her safe. it's why they start eye-rolling and calling him & taylor "team mom and dad."
and the whole dynamic shift is so bittersweet because. alec is best friends with aisha. aisha is the closest he's ever been to anyone in his whole life. they have a deeply meaningful and intimate connection, one that's so powerful for alec that he ultimately decides that he'd rather die for aisha than live in a world without her. for the first time in his entire life, he's found someone who really gets him, and who trusts him to understand them back. but it comes at the cost of brian drifting away from him, not because of anyone's fault, but just because brian is traumatized in a specific way that means he doesn't know how to navigate aisha being on the team without treating alec poorly. over the span of just a few months he goes from playfully bantering with alec to sneeringly telling him to be quiet when the adults (i.e. him and some other people who are, like, 17) are talking. (& there's hints of this tendency of brian's even early in worm, when he like...chides alec for going 'woo triple headshot :)' abt his video game while taylor and brian are talking, but it's not even half as bad as it is after aisha joins.)
and alec does not react to this by clinging to him or by overestimating how close they are, nor by needing "a stern talking to" that educates him. brian tries to give him Stern Talking To's quite a few times in the book, and it's more or less always 1. condescending and unnecessary or 2. not unnecessary, but too condescending to be useful. and alec's reaction is never to go "oh ok i see sorry," even if brian is fully in the right--the way brian delivers it means that alec's ptsd toes are getting stepped allllll over and he reacts by just being dismissive and passive aggressively annoying until brian gives up/decides it's not worth the effort. i.e. exactly how alec has been trained to react to people scolding him as a child in order to minimize the vulnerabilities via which he could be targeted for abuse. guy who doesn't know how to express displeasure with someone without mimicking his shitty father & his tragic friendship breakup with guy who doesn't know how to react to someone expressing displeasure w/ him from a position of authority without responding like he's trying to avoid giving his shitty father a way to hurt him more than he already is. it's sad. :(.

Whumptober Day 1
Uta
Tumblr media
Lmao so we're starting off with Uta this year because I noticed October 1st is her birthday, and what better way to celebrate than to give her the first Whumpday hororororororo TW: Mention of destruction, abandonment, guilt of unconscious criminal actions, and Uta considering herself a monster
For as long as she could remember Shanks and his crew had been there for her.
Until that fateful day, the music island had been destroyed.
With the pirates being the only survivors, they fled the scene with her before the Marines arrived. Uta slept in Shanks' arms, unaware of what they were discussing.
"What do we do?" Roux asked pushing the plate of food away from him. "If the Marines found out she was the one behind this..."
The members worriedly glanced at Uta who clung onto Shanks' arm. Heavy silence only fueled the anxiety clawing in their minds.
"She might have a higher bounty than the Devil of Ohara." Hongo set the stack of bounties he had been looking through on the table.
"It's not right for kids to have bounties," Yasopp said, his arms folded and staring at the ground.
"She would've gotten a bounty eventually," Limejuice reminded the group. "We're pirates, and marines don't discriminate who to make an outlaw."
"Well, we didn't expect it this soon."
"It'll be dangerous if she stays with us."
"We can't just drop her off and leave her behind."
The last statement ceased the others from conversing further. Shanks, who had been quietly looking at his daughter, at last spoke up, "Let's head to Dawn Island."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Luffy waved goodbye to the pirates, shouting he'll meet them again someday with his own crew, when a thought wormed it's way into his mind. He dropped his arms and scratched his head in search of his memory. Did he say bye to Uta? She didn't talk to him as the crew was packing up to leave, which was weird. Uta would've been right by Shanks, teasing him before Red Hair gave the strawhat to the boy. Maybe she was already on the ship sleeping, her devil fruit did take up a lot of her energy. Luffy shrugged it off and walked back to Makino's bar.
"Makino, can I have some juice?" Luffy requested as he climbed onto a stool in front of the bar.
"Of course, Luffy." She smiled and got out a glass.
Luffy happily waited, kicking his legs back and forth, when he heard a girlish yawn behind him. He spun around, eyes going wide. "Uta?! What are you doing here!?"
"Hmm?" Uta shot him a confused look as she rubbed her eyes. "Why wouldn't I come here? I'm hungry, I want breakfast."
"Luffy-" Makino tried to explain the situation but Luffy opened his mouth first.
"BUT SHANKS LEFT! I THOUGHT YOU WERE WITH THEM!"
"He wHAT?!" Uta snapped awake not processing what he just said.
"Shanks and his crew left earlier this morning, why aren't you with them?"
Uta's face contorted to one of horror and she dashed out of the bar, unable to hear Makino calling out to her. Her little legs carried her to the docks, she glanced around in devastation at the empty port.
They left her.
They actually left her.
She thought the conversation she overheard was a bad dream. They wouldn't abandon her, right? They loved her, she loved them. So why? Why did they leave her here?
Just as the question appeared in her mind, a brief memory from Elegia's destruction popped up and for now her questions stopped. She bawled her fist as rain fell onto the ground in front of her. Luffy ran up to the docks, Uta wiped away the rain before turning to the boy wearing her dad's strawhat.
"Did-" she paused to get a hold of her emotions. "Did he say if he was coming back?"
"No, he said they won't be returning," Luffy bluntly said but quickly scrambled to fix it. "But- uh- I'm sure they'll come back for you. I mean- we can get Makino to call them and have them pick you up-"
"Don't bother." Uta brushed past him. "He's not going to come back."
Just like her world shattered. Her family, that she could fall back on, disappeared. All that remained were gaps that needed to be filled with answers explaining why they would leave her, and she had a vague idea of what they were.
As the gaps filled with her thoughts of the music island's destruction, a seed planted itself in the back of her mind.
'Monster.'
