It's a hilarious and sweet story that I believe is hugely under-appreciated.

The Fifth Type of Non-Contact Force by Caixx (Not Rated, 83k, WangXian, Modern AU, High School, Slice of Life, Slow Burn, Fluff and Humor, Actually Somewhat Canon, Mutual Pining, Horny Teenagers, Angst with a Happy Ending, Non-Graphic Smut) this fic has been on my mind a lot lately!!! i love the yearning and exploring the complexities of their relationship in this setting. i also just love the way the author's prose

ruined me with your regard by laallomri (T, 46k, WangXian, Post-Canon, Slice of Life, Introspection, Epistolary, it is not all letters but there are quite a lot of letters, Discussion of Canon Events, Pining) there's so much lyricism and elegance and emotion and I keep going back to it every time I need it.

Keep Holding On by abCEE (M, 316k, JYL & WWX & JC, wangxian, canon divergence, demonic cultivator JYL, YLLZ JYL, yunmeng siblings dynamics, role reversal, ghost general WQ, sunshot campaign, angst w/ happy ending, established relationship, accidental baby acquisation, PTSD) I’ve always LOVED roleswap AUs, and this one is the most in-depth one for mdzs. I’ve always loved reading WWX in JYL’s role just because I have the inner need to see him doted on and loved like she is, and this has all of that. Even past that, everyone in this fic is very fleshed out and all of the arcs still follow the og mdzs timeline, but have just enough divergence so it’s fresh!

C) show JYL and WWX being close and spending time just with each other, - I can't really find any where get to do that without JC being there and while I like Yunmeng trio I would like to see them have a bond independent of him

There's a fic that I can't find yet, its short (tagged angst) where lxc hurts himself with his sword in guanyin temple as leverage so jgy doesn't hurt wwx. he's either angry or cold toward him iirc

i do mean top lwj and bottom wwx (only because sometimes the other dynamic can get a little ooc, which is fine, put the blorbos in situations! but not what i'm looking for currently), but /also/ canon dynamics for me means exploring while keeping their personalities: lwj being mean and bitey and awkward, but respectful when it counts, wwx being bratty but confident and enthusiastic. both dom & helpless waif wwx are interesting headcanons rather than canon to me. (also cnc/breeding kink r nice but not obligatory ofc adskjkfs)

tl;dr basically i've been 4+ years in this lovely fandom, and i feel im still not done appreciating the thoughtful way mxtx writes the characters and their dynamics, literally none of her MCs or MLs can be called 'typical' in BL standards

Instead of taking his core, Wen Zhuliu takes that child out of Lotus Pier and straight to Wen Qing and renounces the Wen name, going back to Zhao Zhuliu (independent King, we love to see it)

Basically pledges pledges allegiance to Jiang Cheng and kinda follows him around like a guard dog for the entirety of Sunshot

Wen Zhuliu doesn't make the connection of Jiang Cheng potentially being his son until he's got his hand in his chest and is melting Jiang Cheng's golden core

In this AU there'll be some weird thing where you have parts of your parents in your core I don't really wanna explain it

"Jiang Cheng’s golden core was strong for a seventeen year old and was filled with unbridled potential that only the son of the Violet Spider could hold or hope to live up to"

"It spills all over his fingers then onto the floor and he lets it, staring transfixed as his son’s livelihood falls through his fingers"

Basically, Wen Zhuliu gives up his core for Jiang Cheng via Wen Qing and surgery instead of Wei Wuxian and everything else plays out the same minus the demonic cultivation

Jiang Cheng still kills Wen Zhuliu however when he searches his robes he finds a letter addressed "Jiang Wanyin"

Edge of Seventeen (Jiang Cheng Sect Leader succession during Sunshot, potentially Zhancheng 👀)

Pretty much just a character study of Jiang Cheng

Set during the 3-6 months that Wei Wuxian was in the burial mounds

2022 Fic Fanwork Recs

Saw someone doing end of year fic recs and I decided I wanted to talk about fics. And then I started going through my ao3 bookmarks and realized I had a lot of vids I really loved in there. So under the cut (because even limiting to not too many per fandom and only things published this year this got long) are some things I've liked this year!

DMBJ

So Beat the Drum Slowly by Thimblerig gen: Wu Xie goes to A Ning's funeral I am the center of the target audience for this fic. I love A Ning and this gave me some actual closure over her death.

Wish Your Bed was Already Made by ilgaksu Wu Xie+Heihua I love ilgaksu's version of heihua always. Would recommend this fic for fans of all the times in Ultimate Note where Wu Xie is forced to third wheel them and for everyone who assumed Hei Xiazi put a tracker on Xiao Hua in the heihua movie.

Practical Applications of a Formal Education by Pandelion gen: 5+1 snippets of tomb adventures This is about the most important character in dmbj (Wu Xie's architecture degree). Fun tomb moments and character dynamics for everyone.

Pépito is Out by ladysisyphus iron triangle ot3: snippets of post-reboot hanging out I love the iron triangle and I love most of the ot3 hanging out being retired fics. This one also has a lot of cute visiting reboot characters and a very cryptid Xiaoge.

With Water and a Star by afrikate Hei Xiazi/Xiao Hua/Huo Xiuxiu (mind the metadata: this is the only tomb show fic I've linked that's rated m and not super short) The rare tomb show fic that's mostly about the politics of running mob families (tbh it's rare in canon too except for sand sea so maybe there's a lot of this in fics I haven't read for spoilers reasons): Huo Xiuxiu takes over the Huo family! Love to see her getting to actually be badass. I was skeptical of the ship going in, but this is a getting together fic for all the sides except heihua and it really sold me on the various dynamics.

vid: spike the punch by stellarer Ultimate Note. heihua vid!! this vid really gives you the sense that these weirdos like each other so much and is just really joyful to watch

vid: you're a 10 I'm a four leaf clover by absternr also UN, also a heihua vid!!! they're so weird and they flirt so weirdly <3 and this vid does a great job conveying that

vid: Still Not Dead by teyla multi-tomb show. Honestly if you're in the dmbj fandom and you haven't gone and watched all of teyla's multi vids, congrats, you're gonna have a good day today, go watch all their vids they're all great. This one is a bop but also a good thing to watch if you want to think really hard about Wu Xie as a character.

vid: I'm not your friend by absternr UN. My reclist so I'm gonna rec a little Ultimate Note A Ning vid where she gets to be hot and badass and not dead.

The Untamed/MDZS I've been in this fandom for over 2 years now, so my untamed fic recs are all things that are a little different from a lot of the stuff I've already read. If you're just kind of looking for a wangxian fic there's a lot of new good ones that I am not mentioning here.

the fair and the good and the brave must die by Lise wangxian... kind of. canon-era, during the 13 years Lan Wangji finds Wei Wuxian's angry resentful ghost and has to deal with that. This fic is upsetting and I love that.

grandmaster ranked in demonic cultivation by tshirt Jin Ling centric (Jin Ling & Jiang Cheng among others): modern ...league of legends au? as in they play league I know nothing abut league but this fic author clearly does and I love to read a niche au. Funny and also really really good characterization for both Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng.

年年有虞 | Sweet, but not too sweet by frostferox Jiang Cheng centric: modern au - elementary school Jiang Cheng has a bake sale Okay so you can tell who my favorite untamed boy is from this list :p but this is a really interesting take on what all the Jiang family relationships look like without the big stressors of canon. Also a fic about being first gen kid in a US elementary school.

vid: Fixer Upper by absternr Burial mounds vid! Lots of Wens (+ Wei Wuxian) feels about trying to build a home when everyone wants to kill you. This made me cry.

Nirvana in Fire

The Young Marshall's Ghost by ConvenientAlias gen: Mei Changsu solves a mystery After reading this I went back and read the rest of the series it's in, but given that I read it in this order, it obviously works as a standalone. Fun if you like to watch Mei Changsu be smart but framed more in a mystery way than a political drama way.

boiling point by caulkhead Lin Chen & Mei Changsu This should really have the exhausted character finally gets a nap tag. Lots of cleverness and friendship feels.

All the Distant Stars by BromeliadDreams Mei Changsu/Xiao Jingyan: scifi au This is one of the only setting aus that I've really liked in this fandom, but it's doing really cool things with how you come back different in a scifi setting. More running around having adventures and feelings vibes than political intrigue.

"The wise person avoids parties as far as possible" by Nemainofthewater Jingrui goes to a party (no not that one) choose your own adventure fic This is such a cool fic format and there are so many different possible endings

vid: Mei Changsu is climbing the mountain by sandalwoodbox general nif plot focus This is a remix of another vid (that is also excellent and you should watch) and it's a really cool tonal shift between the two vids. It's somewhere between saying something very serious about canon and doing something very silly.

vid: ...Baby One More Time by absternr Jingyan/Mei Changsu(or should I say Lin Shu?) Okay so I'm choosing the silly nif vids I guess but the thing about this vid is you go in being like haha a Brittney Spears song haha there were so many signs and you come out being like oh no Jingyan's lonliness is killing him I am so sad now every time. Which is the ideal nif vid experience imo, can't spell knife without nif, go have some feelings.

Misc Vids

Don't Worry Be Randall by lizardjay For Infinity Train but I'd rec it even if you haven't seen the show - it's just a charming animation of don't worry be happy

But the real draw of this vid is it really gets that Anthony is a terrible awful garbage man but I love him and so does Kate unfortunately. Just a really fun time and a very iddy look at this generally very iddy ship.

This is an extremely late answer, because, uh..............it is. But yes! With reference to this post here, the Watsonian and Doylist explanations for why Lan Xichen's relationship with Jin Guangyao is Like This in Musical Chairs. Because obviously it's a bit different than it is in canon! Lan Xichen is getting less manipulated, and while he's not absolutely clear on what's going on in Jin Guangyao's head (because no one is), he's more right than anyone else is.

Doylist Explanation

I, uh, struggle to handle ensemble casts. That is to say, I can write group scenes, but I can't do real character work for more than a couple characters in one story. I get confused, I get bogged down, the pacing drags. I generally cap myself at about two, max three; I did once try four (in a fic that has never seen the light of day and is unfinished), but it was very, very hard. In its initial conception---which does not necessarily reflect exactly what it's looking like now, but I never actually planned to write this much of it---Musical Chairs was a story about Jin Guangyao and Wei Wuxian. Not as in they were going to fall in love, but as in they were the primary focus of the narrative. Which means they were the only ones who got character arcs; their love interests were there to be love interests.

The narrative effect of this on Lan Xichen is quite simply that I couldn't afford to have him not understand Jin Guangyao better. This is a fic with a happy ending (in the universe where the ending gets written), and in a real happy ending, Lan Xichen can't be in love with the mask, he has to be in love with Jin Guangyao as he really is. But I didn't want to handle character arcs for four characters (for narrative balance, if I'd added Lan Xichen, I would've also had to add Lan Wangji), so I couldn't do a narrative where Lan Xichen has to grapple with the idea that Jin Guangyao isn't who he thought. Which is why, in this fic, Lan Xichen has essentially already grappled with that and come to the conclusions he has.

Watsonian Explanation

Jin Guangyao is still super messed up in this, because.......well, because otherwise he wouldn't be him. But he's less deeply, incredibly, wildly fucked up, in large part because he hasn't crossed as many lines.

To start with the obvious, this version of Jin Guangyao has never killed anyone. There's no demonic cultivation; he's never been in a war; killing people would be terrible for his image.

But the difference that's really central to this fic is, of course, his relationship with Qin Su. In my personal opinion, his marriage to Qin Su in canon is the real point of no return. Obviously there's the moral event horizon of his murder of Jin Rusong, but there's also the fact that once he's decided to go through with the wedding, he will never be able to be fully honest with anyone ever again---there isn't a single person he can tell about the incest (which, once he's married her knowing, is now an active choice he's made, because he values himself, his status, his relationship with his father, and his potential future power more highly than he values any morals or affection that would've pushed him to stop the wedding). I could get more into this, but that's not the point.

In this fic, Jin Guangyao responded to the revelation about them being siblings by telling Qin Su. This is because here, in a modern au, things with Qin Su are really, really different. Just to start with:

by the time they're talking marriage and he finds out, they've been together way longer, he literally just cares about her more

dramatic breakups are something celebrities do all the time, and while this may not be Jin Guangyao's preferred direction for his image, it's very workable

birth control and abortion both exist and are relatively available, especially given their means

the benefits to his career Qin Su has provided are already significant, will last even if they break up, and are not exclusively tied to their romantic relationship and potential marriage, especially if she continues to support him (which his understanding of her leads him to believe she'll do, and he's right)

......look, to be perfectly honest, because of societal etc., they had a lot more sex in this universe, and it would be really hard to explain to her why they should get married but stop fucking

it's just not worth it---consequences of breaking it off are less, benefits of going through with it are also less

So he tells her instead of marrying her! And they don't get married, and they're both very messed up about it, but they're able to eke out a relationship besides that, because they were in love and because Qin Su still cares and because Jin Guangyao still cares and because a relationship with her is still really good for his career.

Instead of this relationship turning into something he can never tell anyone ever, this relationship is a secret he shares with someone. Lan Xichen understands Jin Guangyao better because Jin Guangyao is hiding less because Jin Guangyao has less to hide. He didn't tell anyone but Qin Su about the incest---and he didn't really feel like he could, and he definitely wouldn't have without his hand getting forced---but he knew that if, for instance, Lan Xichen found out, he could always truthfully say that he didn't know and they ended it once he did.

Which isn't to say that Jin Guangyao isn't still hiding things, or even that he hasn't done things that Lan Xichen would disapprove of. Of course he is, and of course he has. But the things he's hiding aren't as dramatic, he's hiding fewer of them, and thus Lan Xichen is allowed to know him better. And so Lan Xichen has already had the opportunity to get to a place where---regardless of the completeness of his knowledge of Jin Guangyao's actual actions and history---he's aware of who Jin Guangyao fundamentally is.

FUCKIN BATHOUSE AU LOREDUMP

Okay so Sebastian was still born a demon in a family of demons. In this AU Hell is very vast and has a lot of different sections, some sections being rather touristy or heavily enjoyed by locals. Sebastian's family has a bathhouse that's been passed down for generations that gets a variety of guests from Hell and beyond. They also serve homegrown tea and food.

Sebastian has two sisters in this au one older and one younger. The younger one is named Sakura because she liked the flower and wanted an S name for her human name just like Sebastian. She really looks up to Sebastian as her cool big brother and wants to be just like him. Sebastian's older sister is named Misa I might change this I just named her after misa from deathnote but ermmmm.

Misa is the one thats set to inherit the bathouse next so from the get go she's had a lot of weight placed on her shoulders. She's always been pressured throughout her life to live up to the standards cultivated over thousands of years from both her family and the pressure to carry on traditions. In her earlier years this caused her to rebel and start getting up to normal petty crime type teenage shit you would expect. She got involved with a lot of the wrong crowds to cope and got even more weight pushed on her from her family because of it. Eventually she just learned to suck it up to carry on the family traditions because they're very important to her but she can't help but resent Sebastian for being able to be as free as he is. Sebastian acts like a bit of a dumbass in this au so she's naturally like what the fuck why wasn't I ever tossed a bone nobody ever cut me any slack yet my younger brother can run amock around humans without so much as a slap on the wrist. She tries her best to be a good sister to Sakura and despite her resentment of Sebastian she does love him even if they fight.

Their father really isn't in the picture in this Au. He died a while ago and nobody really discusses it unless its those 2am sorts of conversations where you're looking at the stars. They do have a mother though.

Their mother has always been the harsh type because she wants them to live up to a certain standard. She does love them and has always done her best to try and build them up to be strong but at the same time the pressure she puts on her children especially after the death of their father causes a lot of tension in the household. Misa has all of the pressure of being the older sibling, Sebastian needs to learn how to mature and stop being a fucking idiot around humans for once and step up to join the "real world" to try and fill the hole his father left, Sakura has to deal with her siblings fighting constantly and never reslly gets paid attention to with all the drama that goes on.

In retaliation Sakura will pull a bunch of pranks and in general be loud and reckless in hopes of getting attention but also partially to mimic Sebastian. Like Sebastian is not a total himbo dumbass in this au he moreso thinks with his heart instead of his brain which is especially weird in their culture but that combined with the slight isolation causes Sakura to be a lot more sensitive than most demons which in turn makes it hard to make friends.

Sakuras favorite job is running the baths beforehand because she likes the way it smells and how warm it gets. Misa likes to cook if her mother isn't already and Sebastian likes to cultivate and prepare the tea. Sebastian gets like real big into it too and starts cross breeding strains of tea and throwing different things into the soil to get the chemistry just right. The effort pays off too. I think as Sebastian "matures" kind of and starts controlling himself a bit more he actually starts to act a bit like Tanaka.

Speaking of Tanaka in this Au all of the servants are dead. It's the modern era. The servants reside in the afterlife but neither Ciel nor Sebastian are able to track them down. Sebastian nearly died performing a ritual that was way above his skill level transforming Ciel into a partial demon. Ciel's lifespan will be lengthened significantly but Ciel cannot shift and morph his form like a full demon could which leads to him being a bit ostracized.

When Sebastian's mother found out he did this she was pissed. Her son literally almost died because he fell in love with his food. They had a big fight but it eventually settled down to where Sebastian could introduce Ciel to his family.

Sakura LOVES Ciel. She's so curious about the human world, she heard all the stories from her family's travels and wants to go up there so bad it's like the forbidden fruit. Misa is initially angry at Ciel because she's angry at Sebastian but her and Ciel are actually so similar personality wise and relate to each other's childhood pressure they become homies.

Sebastian's mother is WEARY of Ciel. To her Ciel is a human gone wrong that will just ruin things for everyone. She does not like Ciel. Ciel has to WORK for her trust. He starts learning their language, helps out around the house, spends more time with the family, ect. and with time she actually comes to like Ciel. She likes his maturity, his drive, the way he can buckle down even when he doesn't like to do so, how cool he can stay even when emotions are tugging at him. She sees him as a wonderful friend and influence for Sebastian. Once she sees how Ciel gets along with Sakura and Misa she starts to see him as a good friend for the family in general and eventually one of them.

Hey @river-of-light ! Here's my @mdzsgiftexchange art for you!! I hope you like it C;

I was super inspired by your prompts, and I immediately thought up this fusion au that really hit me in my interests lol. So this is a modern au where wwx and lwj are married archaeologists and they uncover this ancient buried tomb, and guess who's inside! Yeah it's their past forms they were 100% reincarnated and found each other again because they're soulmates lol.

This au is like totes not actually following proper archaeological procedure lol, maybe procedure is different in a world where cultivation is still being practiced. I imagine that wwx does demonic cultivation lite™ where he can sense resentful or demonic energy and prevent further degradation of bodies, maybe he can pop into their brains with Empathy and he then illustrates what their life was like afterwards. (I love the mental image of every museum having a demonic cultivator to preserve bodies, lqr would hate that lol). Lwj is still a Lan™ and had learnt like, spirit communication and veganism and how to be buff, though he mainly interviews spirits and writes up their field reports into Proper Academic Language to be published. Together they form an achaeology dream team lol. (Maybe the juniors are there as their field and lab assistants, maybe they're wangxians adopted kids, maybe they're both, you decide)

I'm imagining a sort of crosssver between real actually super preserved corpse Lady Dai (who had been buried for over 2000 years but was preserved so well it was like she'd just been buried) and like, weird demonic cultivation preservation. So when the dead wangxian are uncovered they don't look like skeletons lol. Living reincarnated wangxian are firstly like, 'holy shit they look like us', then go on to write up an incredible paper that wins them science awards or smth idk

How did ye olden wangxian die? Idk fam your choice, tho they defo were buried in the same tomb (lwj insisted on the ribbon and burial arrangements, wwx accidentally did the preservation cos he was just so full of that good good demon energy)

Thinking about prompts for Do Good Weirdly. So far I've got:

FFXV: Ignis gets turned into a furby. (Yes, you read that right.) The bros try to survive. Sania is intrigued.

FFVII: AerTi. Aerith is a medium who is haunted by the ghost of Zack Fair, who sends her in search of his long lost lover friend, Cloud Strife. Aerith meets Tifa along the way . . .

MXTX: One of the prompts from the MXTX reverse trope fest. Probably anti-de-aging or becoming elderly, possibly wangxian. Or maybe something Little Apple centric.

I've also got some WIPs I can work on:

FFXV: GladNis divorce fic (they're still in love with each other). World of Ruin AU where no one is coping very well.

MXTX: Modern cultivation AU HuaLian and WangXian, sort of "fake dating" featuring jealous WWX and Hua Cheng.

ETC.

Other than that, I'm open to considering prompts if anyone wants to send one in. If I like it, I might write something for it during the stream. "Don'ts" and fandoms under the cut. I'm particularly open to femslash for femslash feb.

Hello Yuletide Author!

How wonderful, to be able to participate in this exchange for another year! (Or maybe your first year? If so, welcome! I don't get to do it every year, but I'm always sad when I miss one, so it's good to be back.)

I'm generally a cheerful, hopefully-thoughtful person, and that's what I tend to like in my fic, as well. As you probably noticed from the DNW's, I pretty much never want Major Character Death or unhappy ending. But I love romance, casefic, wacky hijinks, character studies, lore-building fic... anything that allows one to have fun with the dearly-loved established characters.

If you want to snoop on me by checking out my AO3 account, you should know that I have two: Danmei is usually under Midshipsman, most other things are under ChibiSquirt. I write-- *looks at their AO3 accounts* --I write a LOT of smut, and of course I enjoy reading it, too. A/b/o, genderbends, and trans or ace headcanons are all welcome. Squicks are: feederism/stuffing; medical kink; and jealousy.

But I also love gen fic! And although I don't tend to think of them on my own, AU's are great, too. I would prefer not to have an AU that erases a minority identity; Fu Shen, for example, should remain both disabled and Chinese. Kid-fic and high-school AU's aren't my cup of tea, either, but in general modern AU's are fine.

I filled in the form this morning at light speed, because I realized I would miss the signup-window if I waited, so I intentionally kept the form light. I figured I could put more detail in the letter after signups were closed. So, here's a fandom-by-fandom breakdown:

Sunshine:

I wrote in the form that I wanted Sunshine, Mel, and Con, but that's not exactly true: I'd love all three, but any two interacting is also good. Sunshine and Mel re-negotiating their relationship post-canon? Great! Mel and Con working together to find a Sunshine who's gone missing? Also fantastic! The reason I asked for an "expansion of lore" is that the book has such a rich, tapestried setting, but backstory counts as lore, and fics that reveal some of that backstory on the way to do something else also count.

Smoke series:

Gosh I love Tony and Lee. They're such *numbskulls* together, it's adorable! There's all sorts of potential ways you could go with this: sweet, hot, funny... I'd love a glimpse of them in the future, navigating their lives as a couple a few years post-canon. I'd also love something from the past, though; maybe Lee during that period when he was remembering the haunted house, but not *with* Tony yet? Also, although I've listed both, a fic where only one of them actually appears on the screen would count as long as the other is still influencing the plot. (For example, that Lee-between-book-2-and-3-fic would be fine if Lee spends it thinking about Tony.)

Doctrine of Labyrinths:

This one is mostly what it says on the tin, I think! Gimme all that good BAMF!Mildmay fic! Things that lean into the setting--vaguely-steampunk, horror-rich, multi-lingual--are delicious. I only ask that it not be incest!fic. (I can actually enjoy Mildmay/Felix sometimes, but I'm very idiosyncratic about which ones I like, and I'd hate for you to write something I couldn't properly appreciate! So, best to steer clear for this exchange.)

Golden Stage:

Here's what I love so much about this canon: the two leads have every opportunity to get jealous, or to not trust each other, or to have a fight... and they just... don't. They trust each other. They make the choice to trust each other, consistently, every time. THAT'S what I want in a fic. (Also, they're each in their way a badass. Fuck yeah!!) I don't have much ability to follow the politics, I'm afraid, but canon settings are fine! Wild AU's are also fine! Are they werewolves? Pirates? Cultivators? (Werewolf-pirate-cultivators?) Go for it! Is it canon-setting and you're just writing some PWP? Gosh, it must be my birthday! (I'm a sucker for a good first-time, btw.)

I feel like this was an exhaustive Yuletide letter, but I know every time I go to write one, I feel like I need more information. I hope this was more helpful than not! And, regardless--

I appreciate what you're doing for the fandom and I really hope you can help find a missing fic- WWX is the moon god and wangxian met when LZ was young and he tended to WWX's injury cause he fell off the jingshi roof. They keep meeting every new moon as LZ grows and falls in love with WWX but content not telling him. Its not quite unrequited bc WWX being a deity cant love. It was a WIP but it ended where WWX gave up his divinity, put it in a lotus tassle(?) and asked LZ to keep it.Thank you❤

A little excerpt of a modern police Au

---

"What," Madara growled, pinching the bridge of his nose with one hand, "and I do mean this," the other white knuckled the arm rest of his recliner.

"The FUCK is going on?!" Madara's eyes flickered from Naruto and Sasuke, scowling from on their knees in the middle of his living room, to Obito and Shisui.

Both had a vice grip on the the indignant pair and who were covered in....what...

What WAS that? Madara squinted.

Cake batter?

A thick pale yellow substance clinging to their uniforms drying in a tacky mess. Frosting smudged over their faces and hands transferring to Naruto and Sasuke's clothes.

They even had sprinkles, in multiple colors and shapes Madara noticed, in their hair.

It was too fucking late, or, well, early for this shit, it was now a quarter after 3.

Then his eyes went to Kakashi and Yamato, still red-faced, trying to catch their breath from bursting through his god damn front door after Shisui and Obito dragged Sasuke and Naruto, kicking and shouting, through said door.

Finally his eyes settled on an amused Kagami and far less amused, possibly murderous, Tobirama. Both had taken up residence on his love seat, sitting a little too close for Madara's comfort, half a cushion was exposed in Kagami's side.

Tobirama's arms crossed and tapping his index finger against his bicep.

"Officer Uchiha, care to explain?" Madara grit out, tilting his head back against the cushion, a migraine rapidly forming behind his eyes.

Obito, Shisui and Sasuke argued over each other, with their version of events, voices over lapping into an unintelligible garble of words.

"SHUT UP." Madara boomed, hair rising and bristling over his robe, effectively silencing all three of them.

"Why did I hire so many people with the same surname" Madara muttered to himself, no one dared to give him an actual answer.

"Officer SHISUI Uchiha. Explain." Madara tried again, his tone pitched low, drumming his fingers against his thigh impatiently.

"We got a dispatch call at 12:45, from a concerned neighbor about two people climbing through the basement window of professor Senju's home."

Madara knew where this was going, he leveled Sasuke and Naruto with a narrowing of his eyes, and nodded for Shisui to continue.

"We arrived at professor Senju's home at 12:57, I knocked on the door while Obito went around to check the window, there was no sign of forced entry so he came back. Kagami and Tobirama opened the door for us and invited us in, we informed them of the situation. Tobirama lead us to the basement, which

is also his lab-"

"That's where we found these two brats rilfing through his shit!" Obito glowered at his cousin, tightening his grip on Sasuke's shoulder, who grimaced but kept quiet.

"Then they ran away! Out through the god damn window again like little gremlin racoons!"

Shisui sighed as Obito fumed, undeterred by the interupption.

"We followed them, not out the window, well Obito followed them out the window I took the stairs."

"Im not going to commend you for having at least one brain cell between the both of you."

"Anyways," Shisui shrugged off the insult,

"While Obito followed them on foot I took the car to follow him, we ended up at...the Akimichi's Sweets Plant--"

"The fuckers ran in there! Like they mapped the place out! Some Scooby Doo type shit! At one point I was running away from Shisui with Naruto!"

Madara resisted the urge to put his face in his hands.

"They even set traps! Who the fuck--"

"Spare me the details of how you two came to be cake pops." Madara interjected and Shisui continued.

"Long story short, they had a car on the other side of the factory, they got in it we got in our car and Sasuke drove like a bat out of hell until he pulled up on your lawn, we tackled them coming up the porch."

Madara sat up to glance out the window, sure enough there sat Sasuke's car, headlights still on, the tires crushing the flower beds he had painstakingly cultivated to impress Hashirama. Behind Sasuke's car was Shisui's cruiser, also parked on top of a painstakingly made gift.

If he wasn't angry about being bothered after 2am with this garbage, he was angry now.

He cast a wrathful look towards Kakashi and Yamato.

"You two came into this how?"

"Got a call from Sasuke about the investigation, he said he found evidence of guilt and were being followed by "compromised" officers."

Madara raised an eyebrow.

"And you two just happened to be in the same place, together, at this time of night."

"We're off the clock, sir. And car-pulling was eaiser." Kakashi turned up his eye in a smile and Yamato put a sheepish hand on the back of his neck.

"Right." Madara clicked his tongue, crossing one slippered foot over his knee.

He didn't even want to check where their car was parked.

He turned his attention to Kagami and Tobirama.

"Am I to assume you also "car-pulled"?"

"Yes?" Kagami gave a nervous chuckle.

"And just what were you doing at professor Senju's residence at 1 in the morning, Kagami."

"Well, you see, research mainly, I'm there all the time and I-"

"They live together." Sasuke cut in.

"They're married!!" Naruto shouted, pointing an accusing finger at the pair before Shisui gently smacked it down.

Everyone, except Shisui who opted to look at the ceiling, snapped their attention to Kagami and Tobirama.

"S-surprise!" Kagami put his hands up, in surrender, the light catching the ring on his left finger.

"Unbelievable." Madara hissed through his teeth, rubbing his temples.

"I have proof that professor Tobirama is behind the grave robbing."

"Oh, do you." Tobirama's voice was dry, unimpressed. Kagami's eyebrows pinched at the accusation, he looped a protective arm around Tobirama.

"Yes, Sasuke, do you?" Madara leaned on his thighs, resting his cheek in his palm.

Sasuke wrenched out of Obito's grip, throwing a folder at Madara's feet.

"Here."

Madara picked up the folder and opened it, leaning back and inspecting the contents. His left eye twitched and a muscle in his lip jumped as he skimmed the reports.

He snapped the folder shut.

"Did you obtain this without a warrant?"

Sasuke snorts.

"Of course I had a warrant."

"Mhm, very well. Senju, is this yours?" Madara handed it over to Tobirama who opened it.

"Seems to be."

"Is that your hand writing?"

"Seems to be."

"And you're short hand and codes?"

Tobirama gave an agreeable hum, but seemed otherwise unaffected.

"It is my hand writing, my codes and my short hand. But I didn't write this." Tobirama put the folder down.

Madara closed his eyes in annoyance.

"And that means what?"

"I do not cross my Ts in that manner nor do I curve my Cs so sloppily."

"That doesn't mean shit! There's too much information that wasn't reported on!" Sasuke snarled.

"Shut up!" Madara snapped, Sasuke's jaw clicked shut but he matched Madara's glare with his own.

"This is what is going to happen," Madara sighed, "Everyone is going to go the hell home, Shisui and Obito are going to take a god damn shower before reporting back to the station and 8am. I also expect Kakashi and Yamato to show up on time and in separate vehicles. Tobirama you're going to be arrested tomorrow morning as a person of interest. Both as a formality and procedure. As for Naruto, you'll be reporting back to forensics where you're supposed to be, under Yamato. And Sasuke? You're off the case and I'm putting you on probation."

Madara put his hand up before anyone could voice their grievances.

"Very well." Tobirama conceded, standing up. Kagami rose with him, almost relieved to get out of this unscathed.

"Oh and Kagami."

"Y-yes Madara?"

"As for you, you are going to inform everyone of your eloping. Everyone and you'll do it personally."

"Even Izuna?"

"Dress appropriately, I hope your mile has gotten faster."

Kagami went pale as Tobirama lead him to the door before stopping.

"Give my regards to Hashirama." Tobirama smirked as Madara sputtered and a door in the back of the house closed softly.

I think it was a long fic (50,000+ words) and could have sworn I read it on ao3… but I can’t find it again! Help!! #12 on post

The fic was set during the CR study arc, and IIRC something happened in the library that caused WWX to drop hard, revealing the truth to everybody. He never went with the jiangs or any sects. When he was still on the streets he got betrayed by an “esteemed” cultivator because of false accusations (vendor told the cultivator that he caught wei wuxian stealing from him, but in actuality wei wuxian was at the wrong place at the wrong time), it was another kid that stole a toy from a merchant, if I’m not wrong. He was also a part of an illegal underground fights where he “won the bet” against the strongest fighter. He’s also claimed by wen qing to be the killer of a murder because the only one who knows around needles is herself, and she met wei wuxian and taught him the arts of needles. There’s also a wei wuxian - xue yang connection by said syndicate because the chang sect was a part of it. #9 of post
