The real loss of Capcom putting Kristoph in the basement is that we can no longer get any more scenes or context about the weird gay shit he and Phoenix had going on. I think they painted eachothers nails and shotgunned cigarettes together during the late hours and explored eachothers bodies once or twice, you know what I mean. OK!! New big post because it seems the interest in psychonauts lost media has gone COLD

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS DISC??

This is gonna be a longish post but it breaks down some of the lost media digging I've been doing and links back to my archival site so I'm just gonna put it under the read more

Years and years ago when psychonauts first came out, majesco did TWO sweepstakes, one was marketed as a golden disc from select retailers, there were 15 golden discs in total but only 5 were eligable for a grand prize of 5'000$ each! It's not certain if their even is a disc though(while their promotion states DISC!!! Their actual rules say 'certificate!!!'. ) And if there is.. no one has any clue what it could look like! Is it painted? Is it shiny? ... is it cardboard?(joking!! But really their marketing was real bad)

The SECOND sweepstakes is also... well lost? Ish? Kind of?? Majesco built an online community to Duke it out on who was the biggest nerd: PSYCHOPORTALS!

This was exclusive to the states(and even in the states, their was only a few areas that were eligable to participate) , and supposedly they had people running around the streets handing out flyers, on college campuses doing events, they even has a national radio campaign! (And I haven't found a single thing!!!! Well except for some cool web page assets and a few small articles that were archived from the wayback..)

Their were 10 online portals to unlock, and LA Won!! Kind of. Well they won PART of the contest ,,,(so says a mixnmojo post from the time that dosent expand on it further, no other sources say LA DIDNT win the whole dang thing though!) THREE seperate forums say to tune in next week on April 28th for more info but... theirs kind of no record after that! Theirs some information on a 'psi recruitment seminar' as an in person event held with tons of cool gear and trivia but I only ever found one news article for it.. wich means there's more stuff out their were missing!

So all that information to say: hey theirs cool stuff here!! I made an archival website just for it! All the merch and dates and lost things I could find have all been compiled right here(brand new website too! Redecorated and new code from the ground up! It's still a wip but it's got all new info and lots of old images of merch)

people who think clem surviving makes no sense are so funny. "they were literally foreshadowing her death the entire season" let me introduce you to the concept of a red herring. she tells lilly she isnt lee and shes right. the narrative was forcing her down that path, a path she saw as an inevitable fate waiting to take her too, but its a narrative broken by aj, who is also his own person and not S1 clem

"it happened to lee, and itll happen to you" lilly tells clem she'll die protecting aj from some mistake he makes, when in reality his defiance of her will is what saves her life after she had already accepted her fate. he breaks clem free from the lee cycle and they get their relatively happy ending. good for them

the way he narrates like it's a storybook. the gentle treating of his role like a camera. focusing on different aspects slowly with this theoretical lens--the movement from characters to a small escapable details in the background. how he shows only what's necessary and makes the rest of it all suffocatingly frightening. what isn't there is a constant raised hair on the back of your neck.

the way he uses dialogue tags--"'mister nathanial,' he says, 'come with me.'"--so short and quick, like he's narrating an audiobook.

and the way he is constantly So Hyped About His Players. if mercer has "you can certainly try," starke has "that's so cool!" hype man to the extreme.

I know I joked about DVDs but in all seriousness, I'm really glad that there's an option for watching VODs that isn't on Twitch and YouTube. It's been mentioned a few times today, but both of the interfaces of these platforms have been increasingly enshittified. I simply do not use YouTube anymore because of how horrid the interface is. I caught up on campaign 2 entirely on YouTube (and sometimes via podcast) in 2019 with no issues, but it is straight up maddening trying to use it now, and I don't know that I would have made it through the campaign if I was trying to catch up today.

I absolutely understand being tired of additional streaming services and I am absolutely in the same boat, but I also don't know how many people really recognize how gutted media distribution has become in the last ten years in the name of convenience. We all kind of realize it, but it's hard to grasp just how extensive it is. We can talk about independent business choices separately, and we should, but when the only platforms on which you have the option to distribute your work are at best frustrating to use and at worst hostile to human life, when monetization services can censor anyone they please with little explanation and have been cracking down on any content they arbitrarily deem inappropriate, when it is not clear that centralized conglomerate social media sites will continue to exist in the next year let alone decade, it is genuinely crucial for independent creators to start building alternative avenues of distribution that they control now.

#this is not about discussing the independent business choices but just for the record #i do think the way this has been handled thus far is solid and extremely reasonable. #and also i do think people would've lost it if dropout had not started largely subscriber-only and made that decision later. #just saying. I 100% think dropout's model is reasonable but they are STILL more restrictive in subscriber-exclusive content than this is #frankly at this point I do tend to favor creators who actually exhibit some business savvy cuz like #I don't necessarily presume that others will be in the space long term and i just don't have that much time to get invested in things #also cuz imo those people also tend to understand format better which is my vibe lol so there are other reasons but #i did work at a digital media company for five years and felt like fucking cassandra over literally this issue exactly so like #I'm not here to claim that I'm an expert but I do get it #the current situation SUCKS and trying to get through it is like threading a needle during an earthquake. while you're on fire.

#my art #the x files #dana scully #fox mulder #alex krycek #i was talking about this on twitter yesterday but #i have a LOTTTTTT a lot of thought about this part of season two #mainly because i think that while scully probably realized she was never going to find peace ever again after emily #i do believe that the last time mulder ever thought everything would be okay was right before scully’s abduction #which is also kind of why i think mulder was closer to killing himself in ascension than in gethsemane #at the end of season four mulder is kind of resigned to his and scully’s lives unravelling #he’s more suspicious and slower to trust then he ever was #while ascension was the first time he was like. Oh okay. It’s over for us forever and ever #and the fact that he was still open and still kind of okay before that just kind of makes it worse #that he was just betrayed and left hanging and lost everyone he thought he had in one fell swoop #ascension jades the fuck out of him and you can see it. like through the whole series there are threads of it #his tendency to rely on skinner regresses for a while. he becomes even less functional when scully is gone. #he has far less patience for his informants and he refuses to rely on anyone the way he tried to on krycek #like it’s just. such an obvious shift in his character that you can tell his mindset about his and scully’s life has changed #and that’s a huge part of the show’s tragedy i think. ​there is no peace. there is no rest. it’s never going to be okay
