how to build a chair........... director's cut ∠( ᐛ 」∠)__ this is about to be a very long very self-indulgent post where i just talk about my own writing. i also doodled on all the pages i think it makes the whole thing more fun to go thru. welcome to my ted talk
Tumblr media
SIKE before i begin. credit where credit is due, this post was the start of it all. it changed my brain chemistry my jaw was dropped i was in awe i was obsessed and before i even finished it i knew that i would eventually have to make something similar for the commander or else i would be cursed to think about it for the rest of my life. and i Was cursed for like two years every day i would just be like........ is today the day i sit down and draft the commander chair fic of my dreams....... maybe tomorrow......
and then i got accepted as a writer for the gw2 zine ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ the chair idea was actually my backup option in case my first idea didn't pan out, and thank god it didn't, bc this one worked so much better. (still working on my initial idea, just turning it into a full fic! it was wayyy too long to be a zine submission.)
this is the chair i used. i downloaded the assembly instructions and tried out a bunch of different free pdf editors until i found one i liked, which ended up being sedja. if anyone's interested in doing something like this, i recommend printing out the pdf and writing directly on it! it was a lot easier for me to just figure out everything on paper first and then digitalize it after :P here's a picture of my physical copy
Tumblr media
okay actually getting into it for real this time !!!!!
1. yeah i could've just erased the ikea logo and left a blank space but then i realized i could turn it into an in-universe joke. and then i ran with it.
Tumblr media
2. i ripped this straight from the product description on the website. thanks ikea
Tumblr media
3. i'm not sure if anyone went and looked it up, but it's a real item code!
Tumblr media
hehe :3c
Tumblr media
4. if your commander willingly goes to therapy i'm happy for them but TO ME? you'd have to drag the commander kicking and screaming. it's not that they don't know that something is wrong with them, they know, and they know YOU know. you're just never supposed to talk about it. they don't look at their own psych eval results bc that's none of their business.
Tumblr media
5. i normally avoid specifying the commander's race when i write them bc i enjoy the challenge, but for the zine i was assigned to write about a norn commander! as a human main i was uhhhh very ill-equipped. but that just meant i had to study up on my norn lore (•̀ᴗ•́)و i spent hours on the wiki, then went around interviewing norn mains for their opinions, which was great fun :D it all helped me narrow the focus of my piece: joining the war on commander objectification on the side of commander objectification (ㅅ´ ˘ `)♡ and no one self-aggrandizes quite like the norn commander!
and to balance that i knew my narrator had to be patronizing as shitttt. they've clearly been following the commander since the beginning and seem to know a lot of intimate details about their life, despite not thinking very highly of them. wonder who that could be :3c
Tumblr media
6. i can't stop making references. so the original part number is actually #122620 in the manual but i've changed it here (and on the previous page!) to #082812, as in 08/28/12, the date gw2 was released! no real reason for it, @dalennaugw suggested it for funsies and i liked it. if you're my pal and i show you a wip and you have a cool idea for it, chances are i Will put that shit in. hi dale if you're reading this
Tumblr media
7. another thing about me. i loveeee repetition. here the word "over" is repeated four times to match the picture. honestly a lot of the creative process for this piece was just staring at the pages and figuring out how to tie the pictures to the commander in ways that weren't extremely corny or trite. idk why i enjoy writing like this when i could be frolicking in the beautiful prosaic meadows of a word doc instead but. it's like i see a tiny little restrictive box and i'm like OH BOY can't wait to think inside of that thing!!! i like when the format matters just as much as the content and in some cases informs the content. am i making any sense here. well all you need to know is that i'm a virgo and my favorite book is house of leaves
Tumblr media
7. aw fuck just realized i wrote 7 twice. whatever i'm not changing it this is 7 part two now. the theme of my piece is glory, what it means to the norn commander, and how far they're willing to go for it.
Tumblr media
8. does norn culture place emphasis on seeking individual glory Yes are norn also very community-oriented Also Yes. i think it's common to see norn kids napping together in a big pile, usually after they've worn themselves out playing games outside. it makes sense practically (apes together warm) and socially (pack bonding good) but that's just my hc. growing up i used to share a bed with my cousins all the time so it's normal to me.
a young, naive not-yet-commander, with no real combat experience, has no point of reference to compare a "blaze of glory" to. but the way everyone talks about it, it must be a good thing. a wonderful thing. a reward fit for a life well-fought and a legend hard-earned. so they imagine it must feel like falling asleep surrounded by the people they love, who love them in turn.
Tumblr media
9. .........i was playing a lot of ace attorney when i wrote this page. i wish i was joking 👍🏼
Tumblr media
10. ohhh shit the truth come OUT this whole chair thing was all a ploy just so i could write about the departing. again.
Tumblr media
will i ever stop thinking about her. reply hazy, try again later.
11. out of all the pages, this one has the most emphasis on text placement, like comparing the enlarged picture of the screw to a sword, the numbers counting the screws, and "up up up" being arranged to mimic a wisp of smoke.
i also wanted to lean into the viking/norse mythology influences with my word choice.
Tumblr media
12. more nods to norn culture. i didn't know they referred to the six human gods as "spirits of action" until i was doing the research for this piece :O
and the domain of the lost is called a hall of ghosts....... cause valhalla.....
13.
Tumblr media
i'm sorry this so funnyyy. SAYS the guy who literally clawed their way back to life for a rematch.
me when i'm in a sore loser competition and my opponent is the COMMANDER!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
14. arms as in "limbs" and also arms as in "armaments" :•]
15. haha get it because the picture makes it look like there are two mirrored speech bubbles while the text paints two opposing interpretations of the norn commander. one that's selfless and humble versus one that's selfish and vainglorious.
16. and the best part is IT DOESN'T MATTER which one is true bc at the end of the day no matter what their motivation, balthazar is dead by their hand. ofc i'm of the opinion that the most compelling interpretation of the commander is both, simultaneously. contradictions are good for the soul.
Tumblr media
17. i could've name-dropped kas, the only person present that would do something like that, but i felt it was better to leave it ambiguous.
18. low-hanging fruit. the metaphor was so obvious here but i had to do it. for the culture
19. the alternate title for this piece was "THIS COULD BE GLORY". "how to build a chair" was only supposed to be a placeholder title til i figured out a better one, but the innocuousness of it grew on me. also i came up with the other one too late and had already advertised under the chair title lol
Tumblr media
20. my first instinct was to end it with something more reassuring, like "what you have built so far is enough" but that would've been an ooc switch-up for a narrator who has been nothing but snide and detached this whole time. gotta stick to my guns
21.
Tumblr media
obligatory chair joke as the last line. for realsies though it’s meant to be an earnest appeal to the commander to take a break, to have a seat, but it’s also a challenge. are they willing to lean on their friends? are the bonds they’ve forged strong enough to hold their weight? are they willing to put their faith in someone else’s hands? are they brave enough to try? well. only one way to find out.
also guess what that wasn’t even the real last page of the manual. it's THIS
Tumblr media
but no way i was letting this be the image we ended on. IT LOOKS LIKE A DICK AND BALLS!!!
and on that note, THANK YOU if you made it this far!! a very special shout-out to @hawkepockets, my lovely boyfriend and beta reader, without whom this piece would not be nearly as polished. i would bring him pages to look over and he would say Scrap half of those lines you can do better than that. kill your darlings. i would complain and argue for a few minutes then we would revise. rinse and repeat until we had honed this thing to perfection. i can't stress enough the importance of having a second pair of eyes on your work throughout your creative process, even better if it's someone who challenges you. i don't even pay him 🫶🏼
and if there was anything i didn't cover that you still have questions about, please feel free to shoot me an ask! (ㅅ´ ˘ `)♡ thanks for reading! see u later dudes ;P

I saw your electronic dice set and thought it was really neat! I don't know if anyone has asked you before, but how exactly did you get in to tinkering with stuff? It's always interested me, but I don't know where to begin. I finished half of a mechanical engineering degree a few years ago, but unfortunately I left before we could get into any serious machine work 💀
there are a lot of layers to that answer. as a kid I was extremely into lego and computers, took a bunch of tech classes where you'd do stuff like program a really simple video game in a week. I did some freelance web design stuff starting when I was in high school.
probably the biggest single turning point was when I was in grad school and my car's engine kind of blew up. it was an old jeep I'd had for my entire adult life and I wasn't ready to give it up, but I couldn't afford to have everything that was wrong with it fixed professionally, so I found an old pdf copy of the service manual on some weird Russian piracy site and got to fixing it up myself. I learned a lot from that experience, including not to touch active spark plugs.
a couple years later I got a job where I got to play with robots a lot, and it snowballed from there. also, the pandemic happened and I needed hobbies I could do at home lol

Am accounting professor now and subjecting unsuspecting students to accounting (well, they signed up, so they should suspect something).
But the other week my department leadership puts a bunch of people in a group together and tells us "do this thing" with no information at all about what we are doing or how and no one on the team had been on one of these teams before. So after the initial meeting where we realize no one knows what's going on, I started digging around and found old notes and information and was like "hey, I think we are supposed to have done this and here's how the reports are supposed to look, and I even updated the excel so that it has a built in If/Then logic test to see if our assessments meet the required pass rate and you don't have to manually enter that" and one of the business profs was like "how did you manage all this? You are really holding us together" or something and I was just like "well... I'm an accountant. I'm used to figuring out what the heck is going on with less than a quarter of the information I need and a piece of bubblegum."
If you like solving mysteries, sudoku, logic puzzles, and when numbers match, try accounting today.
i managed to work miracles with the many spreadsheets i inherited from my predecessor by adding basic if/then functions and =ROUND (she explained to me when she started that there were a lot of things you "couldn't" do math for in excel because there would be rounding errors :| ). you don't even need lookup to make people think you're a wizard.
i offered to automate something for a coworker in excel and she was very excited even though it was very basic math, because doing math in excel was scary to her. so i threw the spreadsheet together and initially i was going to put in those little pop-up things, where you select a cell and it tells you what you're supposed to enter. but i realized immediately that there was no way she would understand this or even know to look for it. then i was going to make a PDF of instructions but realized immediately that she would never be able to find the PDF because she didn't know how to find any files except through her downloads folder. so then i just made a second sheet in excel, so there was one named 'worksheet' and another named 'notes'. and on the notes sheet there was nothing but a single screenshot of the worksheet that i drew all over to indicate where the numbers were supposed to go. then i added a border and slightly tinted the screenshot so that it would be obvious that it was an image.
anyway when she called me over to her desk because the spreadsheet was broken, she was on the notes page dragging the screenshot in frantic circles trying to figure out how to enter her data into the sepia-toned image.

I've been organizing a bunch of the loose files on my computer the past little while (it's a busywork sort of task I can do while listening to music/podcasts). My music files have always been uniformly named and meticulously organized, and the video files are organized well enough for Plex to scan correctly, but I still had hundreds of gigabytes of ebooks/.pdfs and pictures that were only loosely organized. The documents were a mess, a lot of files I don't remember downloading and all of them with completely nondescript names that wound up being things like a 1946 US Army manual for soldiers still stationed in France about why the French are like that, or an academic journal article about the invention of fishsticks and how there was never any organic demand for the product and nobody likes them.
I'm moving onto the picture folder which is a little better organized, although there are still a lot of obtuse political memes from like 2012 for which all context has been forgotten. Then I unearthed a whole bunch of old pictures of myself in some subfolder, and it's making me feel incredibly depressed. You know, I used to be a halfway decent looking guy. I look like shit now.

last november/decemberish i made the egregious mistake of asking my dad if there were any out-of-print technical books he wanted me to print and bind as a christmas gift, especially given that i now have a wide-format printer; turns out the answer was "yes, many," and he sent me three crusty-ass pdfs of which i selected the least crusty.
however
it pains me, deep in my soul, to turn out a work product with my name on it that's That crusty, and some of the photos etc. (originally meant to be full-color) weren't parseable anymore. so i got my grubby hands on a copy of the original via interlibrary loan (there were EXACTLY three copies in the link+ system which covers a bunch of public and university libraries in the bay area, and i ended up with santa clara university's, which was kind of neat because Back In The Day i took a bunch of physics and math classes at SCU) and manually photographed every image in it on my phone (best camera i have). then i spent approximately the week prior to christmas in a deathmarch slog 1. de-skewing, color correcting, and pasting in all the photos in god's worst pdf editing software (xournal++), 2. retyping all the image captions (originally printed in this lovely dark red that got viciously mangled by b&w scanning) and screenshotting them + pasting them in, and 3. for those photos that are sufficiently clean or unimportant that i don't need to edit + paste in replacements, but that have large black areas in them, covering them in semitransparent white rectangles so i don't wind up printing big black areas on my poor inkjet.
needless to say, this is the worst, most tedious process i can think of except for actually re-typing and re-typesetting the entire book in latex, a process which tempts me every time i work on this albatross around my neck. i only got through part 1 of 5 before christmas so i gave my dad a different book (bought from the bookstore, like a loser) and the promise that i would Definitely have it done by his birthday.
and then i stopped working on it for several months because IT SUCKED AND I HATED IT SO MUCH
and then partway through april i was like "oh shit, his birthday is in two weeks". so now every evening is this cold war with myself where sometimes the project wins and i piddle through another section of part 2 and sometimes procrastination wins and i do a medieval twin-cord binding of my immortal. anyway his birthday was technically today but we are celebrating it next week so i have a LITTLE more time to get the bitch done
whenever i complain about it to my dad he's like "just give up!! just print it as-is!" (accompanied by profuse apologies because he didn't mean for me to go to anything like this much effort) and on the one hand it would feel like giving up but on the other hand i would be FREE OF THE ENDLESS TORMENT but on the third hand there would be a VERY visible delineation halfway through the book where you can tell i Just Didn't Care Anymore

I saw your recent video essay/3 hour ttrpg understanding extravaganza and just. DAMN!
You're an excellent mind to listen to discuss a topic so near and dear to my heart. I'm a ttrpg designer with a couple little games; what's your reading list for ttrpg design as a topic? what books, videos, podcasts etc have shaped how you think? because i love the way you think, and would love to know more
Well hello, thank you for my first tumblr ask of all time. 😅 Congrats on tracking this blog down, and I'm glad you liked the video.
First of all, read Luke, Jared and Snow's blogs. Just read whatever strikes your fancy (https://lukegearing.blot.im/, https://jared.blot.im, nerves.games). Snow's most recent post is actually a reading list, I livestreamed a bunch of Luke's posts, and Jared is Jared. If Jared's ideas and opinions sound declarative, that's his voice. I think he dislikes half-committing to ideas, or couching his thoughts, and he has big opinions, so they can come off uh... standoffish? Unfriendly? But he's a big softie, I love him.
For proper philosophy, read Against Procedurality by Miguel Sicart (blog post: https://gamestudies.org/1103/articles/sicart_ap), and his book "Play Matters." His ideas on appropriation and playfulness have literally changed the way I move about the world in my day-to-day. Not every chapter is a banger, but it's good. The Forms and Fluidity of Play by Thi Nguyen is also great (https://gamephilosophy.org/pcg2014/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/C.-Thi-Nguyen-2014.-The-Forms-and-Fluidity-of-Game-Play-PCG2014.pdf), as is Cybertext: Perspectives on Ergodic Literature, even if it was written in the 90's. It's very readable, which is important, but also full of excellent ideas.
I'd also recommend um... just reading a lot of adventures. There's a lot of bad ones, but I trust you to form opinions! I'm currently reading Luke Gearing's Wolves Upon The Coast and loving it for different reasons than I loved his adventure The Isle. I'm a big fan of Mothership's instant classics Dead Planet and Pound of Flesh, and I hear the Warden's Manual in the upcoming Mothership boxed set will have some good practical advice. Dread Manse by Micah Anderson was a recent read I liked a lot. I also love/hate/love Orbital Intelligence, but buyer beware: it's a weird as fuck bibliography. XD Dip a toe in as a treat, and treat all of them (including Crapland) at least a little bit seriously.
Also go watch my Zedeck Siew video and pick up a copy of whatever you think sounds coolest. Spy in the House of Eth is a good start, alongside Lorn Song of the Bachelor and of course Reach of the Roach God (which I haven't read yet, but is available at spearwitch.com). This one's a bit sad because of some recent drama, but the books are still good. Oh, and go listen to the Adventure Tourism podcast, and if my episode on Deep Carbon Observatory sounds cool, go read the original (NOT THE REMASTER).
I will say: Don't read any rulebooks for context. Vanilla Game is alright, but people (including me) have said some really Forge-y stuff about Mothership's mechanisms, DCC is huge and its spells aren't especially fun to read, Best Left Buried is... like, I don't want to say anything bad about it because I was (under)paid to edit it, but ehh.
I say that because a lot of those adventures are for """"OSR"""" games, which people say are inherently high-lethality. This is almost always parroted and twisted to be More Forge Bullshit. The rules don't matter. Most of them are D&D clones in lipstick. I recommended adventures (not rulesets) because they're easily appropriated. Just ask how you would use any piece of them at your table, or how you would change them to fit you or your table. It's a good way to play! It's an inherent part of play. I've said it a million times, but my Mothership home game is 2% Alien, 98% Cowboy Bebop, because fuck the rulebook. I don't like the stress and panic rules anymore. Sorry, Sean!
Let me know if this is coherent or helpful at all, and thanks again for the ask. :)

Hasbro released a toy "smart" R2-D2 back in 2016. It has three basic modes: one where it beeps and flashes lights in response to various stimuli, one where it does that and also moves about, and one where it acts as a motion-detecting alarm. But the big draw was the Bluetooth-connected smartphone app, developed by Sphero, that let you drive it around or program various behaviors into it.
I picked one up a few years ago, and played with it a little, but then it sat for some time. I decided to try playing with it today.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First problem: the app has not been available for download since 2018. Okay, I've got an old copy, it's on my phone now. Second problem: the toy won't connect to the phone. Indeed, according to reports, it won't connect over Bluetooth on any Android version newer than Android 8.
(The app screenshots are from an old PC Magazine review.)
I mean, boo and curses, right? Now, it's not a pure brick without the app. The standalone toy modes still work. But obviously, there's a lot less you can do with it, and so the proper recourse is to hack the thing. Unfortunately, a quick search didn't turn up anyone who'd already done this, so I'd be starting from scratch, and obviously you don't expect a product that had a two-page PDF manual to have a lot of manufacturer's notes on the wiring.
But!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This thing spoke Bluetooth, so it's a radio. And if you sell a radio in the US, it has to have certification testing done for FCC approval, and that testing is done by folks who want to know what they're testing. So they often get a bunch of internal documentation, and all the data is saved in the FCC's database. So we look at the lettering on R2's back that says "FCC ID: RS4B7493", and that turns up not just that tiny manual, but a block diagram, the complete schematics, and photos of all the internal parts. Hooray!
Back to unfortunately, one thing the schematic makes clear is that the processor is not reprogrammable, so making the thing connect to new devices or run arbitrary code would require a brain transplant. Probably the most compelling hacked mode would be to have the new microcontroller have a WiFi connection and host a web server, which would then either show the same sort of remote control buttons as the original's "drive" mode or expose its own programming environment. Maybe both a graphical language like the app and something classic like Logo?
I'm really blue-skying here, and this project isn't gonna be at the top of my priority list, but I'm more positive about the prospects than I was originally. Sometimes it's really nice having a signals bureaucracy.

my dad offered to send me their old camera to fuck around with. they had one apparently mostly for taking nice photos of my mom’s jewelry work back when she did, like, lost wax casting. it has arrived
first of all: it reeks. there is a stank. they sent it with the bag and a bunch of lenses and accessories and stuff and it smells like an antique store. i’m hoping it airs out but like, it’s permeated the camera itself, which is fascinating. i don’t know where the fuck they were keeping this thing because it doesn’t smell like my parents’ house, nor does it smell like my childhood really. as far as i can tell this camera was manufactured ~1980 so it’s probably lived in at least three houses. and now my room smells like this thing too. most things seem like they’re in good condition except there’s one... camera case? cover? thing? that seems like it’s breaking down and has gone all gross and sticky and left nasty residue on my hands.
i am lucky enough that the instruction manual was still in the bottom of the bag. i probably could have dug up a pdf easily enough but it’s convenient. it’s also cute because it’s clearly from the 80s. one page notes i shouldn’t throw dead batteries into a fire because they might explode. i told my dad i was surprised he still had the manual and apparently he didn’t even know it was in there
i figured out enough to pop the battery case open and there are still coin batteries in there. supposedly the coin batteries last a very long time but this is probably pushing it. they don’t seem to have leaked. i also figured out enough to pop the case open and oh fuck there’s still film inside. i have to assume it’s completely fucked by now, right? this thing can’t have been in used in like, 20 years, easy
anyway this is a long-term project i guess

Question about ur bookbinding: ive done blank journals before but i cannot figure out how to get printed stuff in the right order. Are you manually editing pdfs? is there an easier way? (please tell me theres an easier way than manually editing pdfs)
hi! yes i’m manually editing them. it’s not the easiest way but it gets the best results.
if you don’t want to do that you may find this video tutorial for printing pdfs helpful: https://youtu.be/EGuED0m51lc
if you decide to typeset it yourself here’s what i did, using libreoffice: start by copy/pasting the entire body of text, then style it, then format for print. i followed this doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Boa-vauo-Sig10zuqAVpA3fuOPPFsVNiV-gSkmcCE0s/edit i would say page numbers are absolutely necessary so be sure to add them, although you may want to exclude them from title pages, table of contents, etc. so set them to a different page style than your main one/s (you can either have just one for simplicity’s sake or left and right styles which can also help with assembly).
either way, printing and assembly goes like this (this is for at-home, have no idea how this would work if you used a copy shop):
-make sure you know what size paper you’ll be printing on. i used 8.5x11 because it’s simple. it’s important to know the difference between a sheet of paper and a page, because with this technique (which is the one i used and the one in that video) 1 sheet holds 4 pages, since they’ll half-sized (5.5x8.5) and double sided.
-you don’t print the entire book at once, you print one signature at a time. i did 24 pages per signature, which was printed on 6 sheets of paper (twice, since they’re double sided). to do this open the print menu (i’m talking specifically about libreoffice but most editing and reading software is similar), type in the “pages to print” as 1-24 (to start), set it to “booklet” or “brochure”, and “flip on long side”. (i’m not sure whether it’s libreoffice or my printer, but i had to rotate it in addition to flipping because the second side would print facing the other way). if you did it correctly, you should see that the page on the top of the stack has two very far apart page numbers (1 and 24), and the one on the bottom has page numbers that are right next to each other (12 and 13). and remember that title pages/table of contents/etc sometimes make the page number inaccurate/not literal so be sure to figure out if you need to adjust for that.
-the next signature is pages 25-48, then 49-72, 73-96, 97-120, and so on. be sure the keep them in order with paper clips or alternating the orientation you stack them in (like in the pic i posted). you might end up with a bunch of blank pages at the end of the very last signature because it has to be a multiple of 4 (if you’ve ever wondered why mass-produced books have that, that’s why). i think it will adjust for those blank pages automatically if your document doesn’t have the right number of pages, but if you’re editing it yourself i would add in the number of blank pages you need to be safe.
-now on to folding them. i start from the bottom of the stack (12 and 13) and work to the top (1 and 24), with each new sheet wrapping around the one before it (the second sheet should have both the previous page and next page from the pages on the other side of the first sheet, which i think would be 10 and 15?). when you’re done 12 and 13 should be facing each other in the middle and 1 and 24 should be on the outside. repeat for all the signatures, make sure their last page (24) goes to the next signature’s first page (25), and then you’re ready to sew them together
i think that’s pretty much it. it’s definitely confusing, i had some trial and error before i figured it out. once you crack it it’s a great skill to have so i’d suggest continuing to hunt for instructions until you find some that make sense to you (like i watched sooo many youtube tutorials but what finally made it click for me was 2 sentences on the adobe help forums)

End of the workweek!
You read that title correctly! Due to "Hemelvaart" in Belgium and Holland, we have thursday and friday off! Today I will be going over Monday and Tuesday with you! On monday i came into the office and had my usual morning talk with Glennrick! We talked about the state of the printers and some more IT stuff! Once I was done I went to Dwayne to see if he had any tasks for me. He handed me an empty USB drive and asked me to make a bootable USB for windows 10 pro. So i started working on it. I ran into some issues so i couldn't finish my task by lunch, I also had to make an instructions manual for Adobe Acrobat reader, showing people how they could add a digital signature to their documents. At lunch, charees came to me and asked me if i wanted to go along with her to the Parlement of Aruba to watch a friend of hers give a presentation about child mistreatment. It was very nice to see the parlement from the inside. And i felt really good after the presentation because you could see the happines on clem's face, just because a few of us showed up to support her. There was a very big table where we all sat down. And being there with 2 ministers and a bunch of head's from department felt very important. A room filled with important people while i'm sitting there as a student was a little intimidating, yet very impressive. Once we were done there, we went back to the university. There weren't any tasks left for me to do, so I just worked on my blog a little. On tuesday morning there was a symposium in the aula which i sadly enough couldn't attend because of a few tasks. I finished the manual and went back to working on the bootable USB. Around 11AM, Glennrick told me to hop in the car because we were going somewhere. Francis, a student of SisSTEM needed help. He wanted a VOIP phone installed in his office. He got a dedicated office from the local hospital to do research on how AI Aerobics coaching affects your cardiovascular health. Upon reaching his office we instantly noticed he doesn't even have ports to install a phone. Francis explained some more about his research before we took off again. In the afternoon, Dwayne took me to the computerlab to label the computers and put them back in the right order. We also looked into bolting the desks to the ground so students couldnt move the desks and break the cables.
At the end of the day, we went out for dinner at Bugaloe, where I tried a surprisingly delicious sloppy joe. As the evening progressed, we encountered some friendly gentlemen from the United States who struck up a conversation with us. We danced and had a blast throughout the night. Before parting ways, we exchanged contact information. It turned out they were all members of the United States Army, and it was their last day before deployment. I expressed my gratitude for their service and mentioned that I wished we had met earlier. We promised to stay in touch, although they mentioned that communication might be limited during their upcoming three-week deployment. They assured me they would reach out once they were back. I will be eagerly awaiting their return.
On Wednesday, I headed straight to work with the task of creating a tutorial video on adding a digital signature to a PDF document. Unfortunately, the university's expensive microphone failed to connect, so I had to rely on the built-in microphone of a webcam. The sound quality was poor, but with some editing magic, I managed to make it sound decent at least. In the afternoon i was asked to prep a slim computer (very small computer that runs on the domain) for the VRES room, this one had a solid state drive instead of a regular hard drive, meaning it would go faster. At the end of the day, Glennrick wanted to have another mentor meeting with me to update me on my progress. I was satisfied to see the "good"box ticked almost everywhere. Next week I can give it my all and hopefully get to see a couple "excellent" boxes being ticked! In the evening, the rest of the group went out for drinks! I wasn't in the mood and decided to stay at the appartment to relax and blow of some steam for the upcoming long weekend! That wraps up my (brief) work week! Stay tuned for more updates coming soon! Signing off for now with love <3 Bon wiként!

Hello I have entered into a minor research abyss and I understand you maintain Cold Boys Research Central, where there is (among many other delightful things!) a link to a PDF file of a bunch of letters to and from Harry D. S. Goodsir, entitled "Goodsir Letters Complete Backup".
What I would like to know is: where did the PDF file come from? And do you know whether the letters were digitized using optical character recognition software or if they were transcribed manually and Harry Goodsir's spelling was Actually Just That Terrible?
I think i grabbed it off the Remembering The Franklin Expedition facebook group and i'm gonna be real i have 0 idea where it came from or who made it. So if someone wants to go check out the letters IRL, then they can report back as to its accuracy!!!!!!

Players Do Not Need The OGL: Truly Independent Fantasy Tabletop Roleplaying
Tumblr media
There is a lot of talk about the new version of the open gaming license that effects everything 3rd party D&D related. And for creators, there's a lot to chew on, and discuss, and mull over. But for players... well, for us, there's two things that I want to remind everyone of. First, you do not need anything besides two or three core rulebooks. The player's handbook, the dungeon master's guide, and maybe the monster manual. That's it. Aside from a runthrough of Strahd, I've rarely had a character in any "official" campaign setting since the original printing of "Keep on the Borderlands." That is perhaps one of the biggest strengths of tabletop roleplaying. The second thing? While Dungeons & Dragons -- and all the D20 variants it's spawned -- are pretty good, they are not the only fantasy games in town, and arguably not even the best, depending on your playstyle. Here's four other independent systems from independent or small publishers that can scratch that fantasy tabletop itch (in no particular order): Swordplay & Sorcery (Unisystem)
Tumblr media
The oldest of these three, this is a modification of the Unisystem that powered the Buffy the Vampire Slayer RPG. Written by Jason Vey, the 19 page PDF is still available for free from his website. You will need the Buffy core system, which is currently on sale from DriveThruRPG for $20 and is well worth it on its own. The Unisystem was well ahead of its time, providing a very cinematic style of play, with streamlined combat and relatively quick character creation. DungeonWorld
Tumblr media
As part of the "Powered by the Apocalypse" family of games (which includes MonsterHearts and Monster of the Week), Dungeon World is a full-fledged system in its own right, and has a whole plethora of extra settings, playbooks, and various content available on DriveThruRPG. The core rulebook is only $10 there right now as well. It won a whole bunch of awards when it first came out, and as a PbtA game, it is definitely cinematic in style and speed. D6xD6
Tumblr media
While I have this system, I've not yet actually tried it out, but it's another interesting and completely different take on game mechanics, with only one main stat - focus. Is your character a jack-of-all-trades, or a highly focused specialist? The system is meant to be able to be used in a wide variety of settings, many of which are included in the full core rulebook ($15 on DriveThruRPG), but there's also a specific "Dungeons RPG Zine Edition" (which contains the base rules) that is also available on DriveThru for only $7.50. Minimus
Tumblr media
The Minimus RPG is four pages long. Four. Written by Ken Burnside, this system has just enough rules to give you some structure, while being brief enough to get out of the way and let you focus on characters and gameplay rather than looking up tables and doing math. It's also easily the most inexpensive of these, and is directly available from the publisher for only $3. So while it's important to push back against the (far more restrictive) update to the Open Gaming License, take this opportunity to try out some really different takes on fantasy tabletop roleplaying with these systems from independent game creators. I also totally agree on making sure the electrolytic capacitors are in good shape - this goes for any older tube amp.Listing of all original Fender guitar wiring diagrams in PDF format for Jazzmasters, Jaguars Showmasters, Toronados Cyclones and more. Another largely overlooked and thus relatively inexpensive but cool little amp that comes to life with a decent speaker to replace the tinny little thing they came with. 57PrecisionBassVintageSeries (US1983)manual.pdf. NOTE TO Mike Schwartzman and Dave Mudgett:the other version uses 6AQ5 power tubes - NOT EL84's (6BQ5's)!Ībsolutely - I know that, that was a typo I'm so used to typing 6BQ5, it just slid off my fingers.īoth versions sound good, but I've had several of each over the years and I found the 6AQ5 version broke up earlier. But usually the original power tubes are still in great shape and will still last for decades! I have rarely had to replace them.ġ930's/40's Rickenbacher/Rickenbacker 6&8 string lap steelsġ921 Weissenborn Style 2 Hilo&Schireson hollownecksġ959 Fender 400 9+2 B6 1960's Fender 800 3+3+2 1970 Emmons SD10 Cuttail (Courtesy ReSound '65) However, they SOUND very close to the 6V6 version - and NOS 6AQ5 tubes are usually very cheap compared to NOS 6V6's and EL84/6BQ5's! This version can often be found cheaper because owners think the tubes are obsolete. NOTE TO Mike Schwartzman and Dave Mudgett:the other version uses 6AQ5 power tubes - NOT EL84's (6BQ5's)! Many buyers make the mistake of thinking they can use their existing EL84 tubes as replacemts, but they won't even fit - it's a smaller, 7-pin socket. With fresh caps and a new speaker (the original is junk for ANY instrument) these are great amps - the 6V6 version is known as the "poor man's tweed Deluxe when loaded with a good alnico speaker (NOT a so-called reissue Jensen, which are not close to the originals) but for bass you need a high-wattage (stiffer) ceramic magnet speaker. And you often have to TELL the tech to change them, as many will only do work to make an amp "playable" to avoid sticker shock. The amp may sound fine with original capps but can blow at any moment with zero warning - and take out the power transformer (I've replaced a bunch of them - and it lowers the value of the amp)Įvery one purchased used should go straight ot a tech unless the seller has documentation of proper service. Last time I gigged mine for slide, it was honestly too loud until I turned it around to face the side wall.Įvery one I encounter needs new filter capacitors - they have a service like of only 15-20 years and most owners do not know they need to be changed at that interval. These things are great for slide guitar or lap steel. Not a clone by any means, but similar in many ways. If you look at the circuit diagram, you will see many similarities to the Harvard. I think of these more like a tweed Princeton on steroids or perhaps a poor-man's tweed Harvard, and that is a very good thing for the right situation. With its totally open-back cabinet, it's pretty weak as a bass or pedal steel amp, but it is OK for really low-volume practice. That transformer-based phase inverter gives it a different character than a blackface/silverface Princeton or Deluxe, which is nice. If you push it, it will still break up but has enough headroom to not turn to mush. I replaced the tinny original speaker with a Celestion Vintage 30 and it's a great guitar amp now. I personally prefer the 2圆V6 version and that is what I have now. I've had a few of these over the years, both 2圆BQ5/EL84 and 2圆V6 versions. Oh, I see the date, I was just out of the hospital, no wonder.
