- HalloHello
thank you king for the idea and for the heads up
I accidentally privated the post so it'll be working right after this.
ANYWAYS
Drunk! Simon x Not so drunk! Reader
TW: Very drunk Simon. I think that's it
A/N: fangirling really hard rn
semi-proofread
You stayed up a little later becasue Simon said he'd be home soon, on a little drinking night with his buddies. He's usually good with controlling himself while drinking, but after missions? Man gets shitfaced and is all hugs and kisses and I love yous.
He's a sweetheart when drunk. Not to say he's not always a sweetheart, but when he has no inhibitions and is actually calm and not tense, he's a big old baby. His inner child really plays out.
You hear Gaz pull into your driveway, as he's usually the designated driver for the after mission drinks. You open your door to say hi to Simon but..
You see Gaz get out of the car with Simon. You open your door, waving. Simon doesn't wave back, and Gaz laughes quickly. He brings him up to the steps, and helps Simon walk up the stairs to your front door.
"Hey, darling. I'm handing you your.. Uh.. Very... Drunk boyfriend." Gaz holds back a hard laugh when Simon, his big self, stumbles forward to lean half his weight on you. You support yourself on the door confused.
"How-What-When--" You look for words but they fail you. Gaz shrugs.
"Even we don't know. Johnny told him to slow down, but.." Gaz gestures to the mess Simon is, and tips his head.
"Don't mean to leave you with him, but I got to drop off Price. Just.. Update me, yeah? I don't know why he'd drink so much," Gaz gives you a nice smile, and walks back to his car to drive off. You take Simon's hand, and try to lead him in. Simon laughs softly, a laugh you rarely hear, and he kisses your face a few times.
He gets in the house, just to crumple to the entrys mudroom seat, and leans back back into some of his own work shoes.
"Oh my, ya'... Y'r such a sore for sight eyes.." He mumbles. You tilt your head, in an 'excuse me' motion. He shakes his head, before trying to stand, and falling back.
"No no, love, a-a sight for sore eyes.. Yea' a sight.." He sighs, "I wish I had a girlfriend tha' wa-was like ya'.."
You snicker, covering your mouth. You manage to get him to the couch, and then your bed, taking off his sweaty shirt and changing his jeans to PJ pants.
"'F I ev'r 'ad a girl, 'd wan' her like ya'.." His words seemed to decline in coherence as he got more tired. You nodded slightly, smiling crookedly.
"Like me, you say? Why's that?" You kiss his temple, and he smiles warmly. His smile is the prettiest you've seen, and you love when he's even slightly drunk because he flashes it so much more.
"'M safe with ya'.. Why wouldn't I wan' a girl like ya'," he smiles, and takes your hand, and holds it.. Like a baby. His big ass hand is wrapped around your thumb.
You softly rub his scalp, as he moves himself onto your chest. You have the TV playing, watching your favorite show. Simon is mumbling.. Something, your sure, but he's just putty in your hands. Imagine: a big burly man, drunk, and infatuated in his girlfriend (but he apparently doesn't know) like a small school boy. It's adorable seeing him defenseless for once, relaxed shoulders, and his gaze is just as strong as he gazes up at you. You peck his forehead, and rub the bridge of his previously broken nose.
"Hey, Si, guess what?" You smile softly, your hand holding his jaw. He hums and tilts his head. "Did you know that I'm actually your girlfriend?"
He stares dumbfounded for a moment, before shaking his head.
"Can't be, mm... Y'r too pretty for me." He kisses your palm, and smiles.
"I promise. 2 years strong, honey." You kiss his lips softly, smiling at his cluelessness. His hands grip the sides of your shirt, looking up at you. He doesn't believe you, crazily, he's still got his insecurities.
"No no, ya'... Ya' shouldn't be.. Wasting Y'r time.." You shush him with another kiss, before his head falls onto his chest. He sighs.
"Wasting my time? Si, honey, I love spending my time on you." You kiss the crown of his head, and scratch his head. He mumbles more incoherent thoughts. He's lights out very quickly, and you follow suit a few minutes later.
The morning comes, and so does a very hungover Simon. He groans, sitting up, and wiping his jaw harshly. You were awake, on your phone when you feel him shift.
"Oh, hey baby." You smiled, and out your phone down. He groans, and nuzzles into your neck, complaining about how his head hurts.
"I know, I know. I got some advil for you." You grab the bottle from the side table, and feed him 2.
"God.. I'm.. Was I..?" He rubs his eyes and gives up, seeking comfort in your arms. Your rub his head some more, and move your fingers to rub his temples.
"You gotta stop drinking so hard, baby." You whisper, "I know you don't do it often, but.. Are the mornings worth it?"
He nods, to your surprise, and leans into your hands. "Mm.. Yeah.. It's worth it.. Cuz'.. Ya' rub my head and kiss me and.. Mm... Hug me.."
You kiss his head, and shake your own.
"Next time, just ask okay?" You get a nod as a response from him. He whispers a thank you into your neck, before drifting off to sleep until 1, like usual.
ahh this was so cute to write and I fell asleep writing it so. thats why I'm posting it in the morning.

Are Merch Mimics capable of using assimilation offensively against humans, for self-defense and otherwise? Like, if someone tried to break a toy/game/etc they were inhabiting, could the Mimic instead pull them in?
To a degree, yeah. I should mention though that Victor isn't "in" the TV in any magical sense; spoiler alert: he's the controller Vance is holding! Hence, the eye on the controller reacting to the dialogue. The Victor on the screen is actualy a model he rigged for a homebrew game he coded the old fashioned way, which responds to whatever inputs the controller sends to the Wii.
He actually is an active member of the homebrew community, and loves to mess with electronics the old fashioned way. Almost no one on the forums knows he's a toy bird, but are impressed nonetheless with his little projects, various rail-shooter games, and weird obsession with snarky anthropomorphic birds.
Victor could technically "jump into a game" on a tv screen, but it'd be a bit of a weird process if he doesn't know how to mod the game, so it'd look more like a shitty greenscreen effect rather than anything coherent. He'd need to learn in real time how the game is coded, how to inject arbitrary code into the system while it's running, etc etc. He CAN do that because he's a fucking NERD, but it wouldn't be a quick process at all.
I should also mention, mimics have an inherent ability to create dreams, since they come about from processing the thoughts and ideas of humans. If a human bonds with a mimic, such that the mimic now knows how the human thinks, they can pull a (somewhat) willing human into the dream when the human sleeps. So to wrap this all up: what Victor could do for a game he understands inside and out is pull a human into a dream that happens to match whatever he himself experiences as currently going on in the game. Basically the ultimate VR experience, with the mimic as a middle-man. Which might be something that'll happen in the comic soon....!
So that all seems a bit convoluted, right? Here's even more worldbuilding about matter assimilation by mimics below the cut. Stop here if you don't want a headache.
The reason so many hoops would be needed to pull a human into a game world is that assimilation is much easier on inert, inanimate objects that are not currently "in use" by a thinking thing, or something that relies on constant electrical signals to function. This can be something with brainwaves, or some other kind of animation like a normal robot. A mimic can convert a CRT TV that's turned off somewhat easily, but a TV that's turned on, with particles of every kind constantly moving into and out of it, is much harder to convert.
This means that humans and biological creatures in general are also trickier to convert, though it can still happen if done gradually enough. Hence, Victor wouldn't be able to rapidly convert Vance in one fell swoop, it'd be a whole process. It's easier to just pull a human into a dream instead, and if a mimic undersrands a video game, or a story in a book really well, they can basically make the fictional world into an extremely lucid reality for whatever human tags along with them.
I often describe mimics as just "jojo stands if they were corporeal and could just get up and move around on their own with no user"; you know how in jojo stand battles or old stories about magic curses, if you break the curse or kill the stand before its effect becomes permanent, all of the damage is magically undone? Like if you kill Green Day, the mold stand, all of the molding just instantly stops?
Mimics who use their powers of assimilation offensively work similarly; they can project their influence to a certain range, and partially assimilate matter in that range. If you knock out or kill the mimic, however, everything reverts to normal. A human who doesn't want to get converted can basically just turn around and walk away most of the time, or shoot the mimic, so the mimic in question needs to pull off some trick to get the human to stay within range for the assimilation to fully stick. A human can still break free and get out of range even if fully converted, but it's much harder, as assimilation usually means the mimic gaining greater control over the converted object in question. The exact range and effect mimics have is again like jojo stand ranges; it varies.
Different mimics have different affinities for different things. Victor can assimilate cheap electronics fastest because he likes them and understands how they work (it's why he's a toy bird mp3 player). Az can assimilate guns, and turn ammo into weird anomalous ammo with weird effects. Zachary is a genius who can assimilate any matter, including biological matter, faster than anyone... but he's also extremely picky and hates the sight of blood, so he only uses assimilation on things he really, really likes.
If I could somehow make another read more at this point, I would. It's gonna get messy:
What a weird power and setup though, right? Why? The true nature of mimics is unknown to most of them, but the deepest lore is that the first mimics were constructs made by a people long ago, who first made them as highly advanced machines that'd recognize the thoughts of their masters to fulfill any practical desire. Need a road built? Done. Need a ship repaired? Done. With physical needs all met, the people began to turn inward, and use the mimics to illustrate their own artistic ideas. Eventually, the will and consciousness of these people were assimilated and inherited by mimics, who themselves became people. Mimics spread, altered themselves, duplicated, deviated, fused, split, and wandered around. Getting into recreational wars, manifesting horrors and delights into reality because they could.
Somehow, after the dust settled, the strongest mimics, the angels, decide to set their sights to the stars, and observe other lifeforms develop technology and their own art. Did mimics come to earth millions of years ago, and simply watched humans grow, evolving with them in-tandem? Or did humans make the first mimics, and somehow became undone and set back to the stone age? The answer to this mystery is currently known only to the oldest of mimics. Except Zachary. He's old, but didn't care to remember.
This is generally why mimics seem so compatible with humans; they were made by either them, or people who were, for whatever the reason, very much like them, flaws and all. The ability to assimilate is basically the conversion of matter into a more malleable state of information. A virtually magical power, but this was achieved not through prayers and spells, but a very human-like obsession with developing technology to the point of exerting control over molecules, then atoms, then the lowest planks of matter. The obsession with scaling every mountain and crossing through every valley. To rip the natural world apart, and hopefully, put it back together before it's too late. Angels seek to ensure humanity walks the right path there, but with human's own desires and intent honored, for better or worse.
To answer your question: yes. A mimic of Mario can pull you into the game and you can jump with him and eat shitty low poly spaghetti with him.
The process for doing that is just convoluted and complicated, and you need to get to know each other a bit first. If he tries to use it as an attack though, it either won't work, or it might just wind up giving you mild brain damage.

Oh WAIT more silly Secret Sun Lore™: I didn't suspect I was bipolar until my roommate in uni watched me go into a manic episode and clean our entire dorm room top to bottom in half an hour (like fully scrubbing the floors and all) while rambling at top speed about how I'm probably immortal for the third time in like a month and was like "hey bro, you know that's not normal, right?"

Alright, I previously alluded to the fact that I have some opinions regarding the OTHER two unaccounted for D&D antagonists as foreshadowing, so here it is (this is sort of just me rambling at 2 AM but I needed to get these stray thoughts out of my head before I could sleep):
(Note: this is a spin off from this post where I was speculating about the possibility that Vecna foreshadows something other than Henry Creel, and I'll be referencing my conclusions from that in this post as well because that post inspired/brought about this one.)
So, in terms of the Thessalhydra, I highly suspect that it's foreshadowing for the creature with the gaping mouth that Nancy saw in her vision. Like, we're definitely seeing whatever that creature was in s5, because they wouldn't have brought it up otherwise, and Will's painting makes the Thessalhydra relevant again so... yeah, I'm pretty confident about this one.
Regarding the Juju hoard... well.
Okay, so, I'm of two minds on this.
Because it's introduced in s3 and it's a hoard of basically zombies which are attacking a town, which Mike's PC self sacrifices in a fiery explosion to destroy. And in s3, we have the Flayed who are basically a hoard of zombies attacking Hawkins, which Hopper (who has so many narrative ties to Mike I swear to God, Hop is literally just Mike, but straight, a more bitter adult, and good at sports rather than science) self sacrifices in a fiery explosion to destroy. Of course, Hopper improbably survives, but imo that also makes sense, because what does Mike do when Will shows his frustration? Offers to walk it back and "finish the campaign for real". It all fits.
But...
Okay, so here's the thing.
We all know there's something up with the spores.
I've seen lots of people expressing irritation about them, as well, because they used to be treated as very serious/dangerous when the Lab was sending people into the Upside Down in s1-2, and the characters (especially the Party) took precautions when they went into the tunnels in s2, but as of s4, that seems to have gone out the window.
However, I actually don't think this is inconsistent at all. Because what happened in s1-2? Nancy went into the Upside Down without a mask and came out fine. Will certainly didn't have a mask all s1, and he might not have been totally fine but there was never any implication that the spores did anything particularly harmful to him. Hopper went into the tunnels without a proper mask and came out fine. Joyce and Bob went in without masks and came out fine. Mike went in with a mask but it fell down (I believe? Sorry, I'm not going back to 100% confirm this right now), and he was fine. Dustin's mask fell down and he got sprayed directly in the mouth with a bunch of spores, and he was fine.
Why would the characters bother to waste time with figuring out masks on top of everything else in s4 when they have never seemed to be necessary?
Sure, the government insisted on its agents wearing full protective gear when walking into the UD, but that's easy enough to rationalize, given that the local Hawkins monster hunters arguably have the most experience with the UD at this point, and... government rules are not always put into place because they're necessary. Sometimes, there are added precautions just in case.
I think it would be really easy for the protagonists to have come to the consensus that all the masking and protective gear was there because the government didn't yet know what they were dealing with/because it helped cover the butts of whoever was calling the shots, on the off chance it turned out the spores WERE dangerous. But our crew knows better! They may not have a massive sample size, but they do have a sample size that consists of most of their group, which seems to suggest that breathing in the spores is harmless. So, why bother with protective gear if it's just going to get in the way while you're running/fighting/if it's just going to slow you down while you're prepping for a fight, when you "know" there's no benefit to it?
...However. I've been thinking about Hopper's story about his exposure to Agent Orange, and...
"I used to think I was cursed. Ever since I was eighteen.
Got some letter of induction in the mail. Uncle Sam wants me to go fight some war in the jungle. Charlie's moving South like a plague because of commie bastards like you, and... You know, I'm happy enough to go. Prove to my old man I'm not the piece of shit he thinks I am.
I get over there, I must test well, and they put me in the Chemical Corps. There I am. I'm just a kid, you know? I'm eighteen years old, eight thousand miles away, and I'm mixing up these fifty-five gallon drums of Agent Orange. With just these kitchen gloves, you know?
We used to clean out these buffalo turbines after a run, and just be inhaling the stuff. No masks, nothing.
'It's not chemical warfare; it's just herbicide to kill plants.' Harmless. That's what they told us."
Except, of course, Agent Orange was not harmless. Not in real life, and not in the show.
And the writers/producers connect it implicitly/narratively to the Upside Down, because Enzo (I cannot remember his real name to save my life rn) listens to this story, and then immediately starts talking about the Demogorgon. And then the scene cuts, and the next thing we see is the government agents inspecting Wayne Munson's trailer and deciding, upon realizing that a Gate has begun to open in his ceiling.
And what I find really interesting is that Hopper's description of their protective gear ranges from makeshift (like the masks and goggles the Party and Steve use in the tunnels in s2-- an attempt at safety and better than nothing, but nowhere near the level of protection they should have) to nothing at all (like all of s4 and many of the instances in s1 and s2 when the Lab isn't physically forcing someone into properly protective gear).
And now the spores are falling over all of Hawkins. Everybody in that town has been exposed.
And I'm just saying... "apocalypse scenario where if you've been exposed to the spores and you die in the UD/near an open UD gate, you come back as part of the UD's army/transform into something mindless and hungry and tied into the hivemind"? It seems like we could be going there.
Which would potentially build something of equivalence to Will's Juju hoard.
And... look, it's me. I can't not link this back to my developing Mike-as-Vecna theory. Excuse me while I take a break from theorizing and write a mini bullet point fic about this concept, I guess:
I can so clearly see a hypothetical scenario in my head, where Mike throws himself in front of a deadly blow that was meant for Lucas, and he's lying there dying with the Party all around him absolutely horrified, presumably gathered up in Will's arms lbr, and, like.
Essentially (unknowingly) trying to recreate his sacrifice in the s3 campaign just, like, ever the strategist, begging them to burn his body as soon as he's dead (I assume they'd have fuel and lighters on them if they're neck deep in an UD-based apocalypse scenario), because he can't come back to hurt them if his body is burned to ash.
And, like, Lucas having to steel his jaw to try and follow through on just that (because I can't imagine Dustin doing anything but freaking out/possibly having Eddie flashbacks, and Will... yeah, no, that's not happening, so it's really just up to Lucas to follow through).
But Will's having none of it.
I say, while my brain wildly chants "s2 Halloween parallel! Will's grasping onto Mike's corpse and desperately calling for him, begging him to wake up and just hold on until help gets there, until Will can take him home! Lucas reaching out to touch Will's shoulder, to take Mike's body out of his grip, and Will shoving him away and clinging tighter to Mike! Lucas trying to gently but urgently talk Will into letting Mike go, and Will absolutely refusing, maybe even suggesting that Lucas and Dustin should get out of there just in case, but this is Mike and Will's staying."
And then there's movement from Mike-- who was definitely dead a moment ago-- in Will's arms. Movement, and everyone's flinching back/Lucas and Dustin are hauling Will back. But, somehow, Mike's coming back to life without any of the usual changes most corpses go through before they become part of the hivemind. Maybe not 100% healed, maybe still very much in need of medical attention and lots of rest, maybe still in pain, but alive again.
Somehow, impossibly, he's still Mike, and the instant that's obvious, Will's ripping out of Lucas and Dustin's grip to go back to him, while Lucas and Dustin are left looking hesitantly between each other and Mike, because this isn't how it's supposed to go, and they're glad Mike's alive, somehow, but also, this can't bode well.
Spoiler: it does not bode well, because the only reason he wasn't turned into anything is because Mike is already tied to the UD, and at least his repressed emotions in the shadow monster are already hooked into the hivemind so he's needed alive but not as a drone, and it's the weirdness of him being Fine that pushes everyone (or maybe just a select few at first) to start to understand what's going on with Mike and how it connects to the UD.
ANYWAY, with that mini fic-adjacent detour out of the way...
I also think if the spores have the ability to turn people into hivemind-linked monsters, then this could link to the idea that Henry is actually slowly being turned into a Demogorgon or something similar (my beloved-- I love that theory so much you don't understand). AND might actually be able to explain a bit about how Will ended up developing his powers (assuming, as this theory tends to do, that Will developed his powers, in whatever capacity they end up existing in s5, from exposure to the UD rather than via experimentation or spontaneous development).
Bringing this back from my previous post...
^ link to the source site
I'm just saying... it says some wizards who want to gain "godlike supremacy" (it's Henry it's Henry it's Henryit'sHenry) are turned into these monsters. Some. Not all.
I'm just saying... Henry as a "wizard" wandering the UD, seeking to control it, being hooked into the hivemind and slowly (so slowly he doesn't notice what's wrong) being turned into yet another piece on the Mind Flayer/shadow monster's chess board vs. Will as a "wizard" (I mean, it's what he plays in D&D) wandering the UD, just wanting to go home, being hooked into the hivemind, but through that being gifted abilities he has yet to fully understand/utilize.
Idk I can see it, that's all I'm saying.
Plus, s2 Mike, who may be connected to the UD, identifies Will as a cleric when he actually plays a wizard... I don't know, something something Will was given the tools/the power to "fix"/"heal" the UD all the way back in s1, but simply hasn't realized his potential yet?
I don't know. That's probably a Bit Much to actually happen in canon, but I find it so interesting to consider.
Anyway, that's all the rambling I have in me for the evening. Glad I got it out of my head, even if it's maybe-incomprehensible.

The weirdest thing to me is Orihime is so... Seperate from everyone else. At first she got her powers from Ichigo, same as Chad, but then wait, Chad's actually just a fullbringer, shuffle him off to a different category, so Orihime's very unique and yet... It's unexplored? I know she has like two fights she REALLY gets to participate in (and one's in the FILLER) but she's made so special and so unused it makes for the weirdest vibe. Honestly all Ichigo's human friends get wasted but her case is special to me.
Oh god, don't get me started on the rest of the human crew. My tears, endless. And yet! Ripe and fertile grounds for plenty of fanfiction/ fan speculation! So it's not all bad, i suppose.
Anyway, I believe??? We get a crumb of validation vis a vis Fullbringers and their generalized weirdness in the novels...
[ lore spoilers for CFYOW and TYBWA if you're invested in keeping up with the anime + extra canon novels in order. Light spoilers under this note, heavy (picture/manga) spoilers under the cut]
I think that it's in CFYOW that Fullbringers are explained as actually having Tiny Mincemeat Pieces of the Soul King in them, which is what makes them so deliciously enticing to hollows. It's also said that you can have bigger/smaller pieces, leading to differentials in power.
And yet. Aura has a full organ (the soul chain/ power amplification organ) , and while she can put Kisuke Urahara on the back foot, that's still not quite the same as what Orihime does. Even for a fullbringer (if she does actually fit into that category along with Chad), she's pretty weird.
I don't beef super hard with her not participating in fights; it's cool that by the fullbringers' entrance, she's not afraid to get into the down and dirty of it, though. I mean, she does this to Ginjo:
and that's just some regular-degular boundaries and self-defense in in the day of a lady who can--
tank hits from Ywhach by the end of TYBW???
After he's absorbed the Soul King, no less. Her shield doesn't even crack.
Like. What's up with that? Weird vibes in fucking deed.
Husb also added an interesting aside, to the tune that souls in Bleach can be overwhelmed by spiritual power that far supersedes their own. It crushes them, renders them sweaty and unable to breathe- lays them flat out on the ground, in the case of Nanao with Yamamoto, or pulps them into paste outright (sometimes without them even being aware of it), such as Hyogoku! Moth-Aizen and that poor random human in Karakura.
It's not that Orihime is going to get 0hko'd, or that she couldn't sense Ywhach's reiatsu. If that were the case, her shield wouldn't be able to block a blow. Which leaves another scenario open to possibility....
So yeah. Weird vibes!

I just realised. under a specific interpretation of her lore, hornet's transfem.
like all the children of PK are genderless bc they're all void right like hornet's specifically pointed out to be "the gendered child".
so one interpretation of her could be "hornet was assigned genderless at birth but who's female, thereby being a different gender, female, than the one she was assigned at birth, thereby being transfem"

I'm not very far through it, but 'The Library of Broken Worlds' by Alaya Dawn Johnson is delightfully new and inspiring.
Maybe this is a little pessimistic to say, but I always figured that most stories have already been told to some degree, in the sense that we will all inevitably write using a pre-existing archetype in world building regardless of if we intend to, and only different variations on these archetypes were left to tell, but this book is proving me wrong left and right; showing a world that is so thoroughly unique and beautiful in its creativity and world building that I can't help but reevaluate that mentality. I have yet to know more of the story or the overall theme, but so far this book has proven to be wonderfully delightful in its handling of a whole new and distant world and incredibly original. It's written in such a compelling way that reveals its lore and rules spectacularly and uses a very unique method of writing that, while has been done before, feels fresh in its delivery. It's one thing to tell a story, but another to tell it to a god. I highly recommend it even if I'm only going from the first one and a half chapters; that was all it took for this book to blow me away.

Honestly I don't think I'm qualified to make this post, I just don't know if I can make coherent enough words man. But the thoughts are in there and I will try to articulate them. This is probably going to be mostly images though.
anyway yeah KABRU POST.
A couple nights ago (at approximately 2:30am, lasting a little over half an hour) I had a bit of a moment about Kabru. That, too, was mostly images- most of what you see in this more concise post were presented then as well. I think my main points of the "moment" were about Kabru's trauma + self hatred, his autism and/or general otherness, and also a little labru if you'd like..
I think something easy to start with is I wanna point out Kabru's constant back and forth and conflicting opinions of demihumans and how, I believe, thats a reflection of how he goes back and forth on what he believes his purpose of living is- and the general worth of his own life. I've said it before and i've just kinda shown it in images; Kabru is "i think im a monster and it disgusts me" where Laios is "I know im a human and it disgusts me" (i could go more into the latter on another post)
the above are both from the world bible, with the left being from the section on kobolds and the right being from the section on Kuro specifically.
Utaya was very near to the desert where most of the kobold population is, this is likely why Kabru is able to speak Kuro's language- he grew up around demihumans. (chapter 48 cover, kobold chapter in the world bible) I won't try to speak for how his mother or the rest of utaya felt about the kobolds but I can say that Kabru was very much othered as a child, as was his mother, purely for the way her son's (kabru) eyes looked.
I feel like its fair enough to say that both kabru and the kobolds were othered, and possibly for similar reasons (villager's seeing them as nonhuman, as monsters) and the fact that Kabru learned their language probably didn't help his case. I think his perception of kobolds (and all demihumans, subsequently himself, as he probably still views himself as nonhuman or not human enough.. deep down) was damaged by the Utaya incident.
at 2:30am when I first started this ramble my main comment was that "had the utaya incident not happened kabru would have little reason to feel ashamed for his connection to monsters. and may have ended up similar to laios in that he couldve had otherkin swag" which is just a sort of silly way of saying Kabru could've learned to love the thought that he is possibly nonhuman or at least not hated himself so much for it.
in the original ramble I said, and quote, "he has been STALKING laios. laios is his hyperfixation to learn how he can ever be loved. he keeps going back and forth so harshly on wether or not he wants to kill Laios and he clearly sees his survival from utaya not as an unfortunate trauma [*] but as a necessary, deserved fate. a punishment for his mother's witchy sins, and for his sin of being non-human. to atone for it all, to apologize for being alive, he tries to better the lives of all humanity. He was set on his way to dethrone the governor of the island . do you understand? im going insane"
*i also said somethings about the way he processes other people's traumas and not his own. He's able to understand and even help some people, but he struggles to process his own issues and see himself as worthy of love and life.
^some examples of Kabru being understanding of or helping others who have suffered greatly.
I think its also worth mentioning that with Rin (called "Lynn" in that translation) he says "I wish there was a way to get her out of this" though he's insisted and pushed for himself to go into a dungeon;
In chapter 94, Mithrun says "The desire I had left wasn't revenge. All I wanted.. was for it to finish devouring me." and I don't feel like it's a stretch to say Kabru was in a similar situation. Mithrun sought out the demon with no plan on how to kill something like that because deep down he wanted it to end his (Mithrun's) own life, to finish the trauma it caused and kill him. I think Kabru went into the dungeon in part with the hopes that it'd kill him. That the same thing that destroyed Utaya and caused him so much trauma would just.. finish him.
I just think Kabru is a beautifully complex character, I have a lotta thoughts on him and I don't see nearly as many analysis posts for him than I do Laios (despite labru being such a popular ship)
there is no tldr for this post idk how to summarize it. do what you will with this collection of images. have fun. go crazy
fun fact the woman in the bottom left corner is his mother, she is labeled here as "witch"
