Childe x reader ~ “Why’d you only call me when you’re high?”
Details: Modern AU!, Soulmate AU!, F!reader (if anyone would like a male reader I can rewrite it to be with a male reader instead and post that too)  Character: Childe/Tartaglia (Genshin Impact)  Trigger Warnings: A very toxic relationship in the beginning (not with Childe), mentions of the mafia, mentions of attempted kidnapping, childe literally breaking into your house(?).  A/N: I love Kaeya but I couldn’t think of a better name so I just used his name for the ex. In now way shape or for is this how I see Kaeya or want others to see Kaeya so please keep this in mind when he is mentioned. Thank you <3
Tumblr media
“The mirror’s image tells me it’s home time,”
The music blared from you phone as you curled into a tighter ball, pulling the polyester material closer to your face as it soaked up the stray tears. Why were you crying over him again, Kaeya, he wasn’t even your soulmate... Where was your soulmate? You’d been on this earth for twenty-two years yet you hadn’t heard a peep. Not a single word, tattoo, flare of pain. There was no red string tied around your finger like so many others had. Did you have a soulmate? Surely he would have shown up by now, or at least made his presence known.
“But I’m not finished ‘cause you’re not by my side.”
The song was little more than background noise now as you found yourself stuck in your own head. After coming to the conclusion you were one of the unfortunate people born without a soulmate, you had turned to meaningless relationships. You had thought they were meaningless, until you had began a relationship with Kaeya.
“And as I arrived, I thought I saw you leaving,”
It had started off beautifully, everything perfect and as it should be. You weren’t sure what had changed within the time you had been dating but at one point the magic of a new relationship had faded and the curtain had dropped. Not once has Kaeya made an effort to show he cared about you, all of the effort had stemmed from you. You were the one who woke up each day and texted him good morning, you were the one who would listen to him rant only to be shut down when you were crying and in pain. Every phone call revolved around him and what he had to say while you could do nothing more than offer up how you agreed with him.
“Carrying your shoes, decided that once again I was just dreaming of bumping into you.”
You had thought it was normal at first, you were both in a happy and loving relationship so why should it matter if he listened to you or not. He didn’t have a soulmate just like you, so why did it matter? You were meant to be together, this was the universe’s way of giving you a soulmate. Right?
“Now it’s three in the morning, and I’m tryna change your mind.”
It took you longer than you’d like to admit to come to terms with the fact you didn’t have a soulmate. Having someone else who shared the pain with you, the feeling of losing something you never had to begin with, was the best feeling. It had filled what you thought to be the gap of your soulmate, like fitting a piece into a puzzle that wasn’t from the same set. It wasn’t supposed to work but it did. You were so happy to have someone like you, or so you had thought.
“Left you multiple missed calls, and to my message you reply”
He had a soulmate. That piece of information had snapped the last thread holding your relationship together. You had clung to the hope that there was someone else like you, but there wasn’t. You two had been arguing, over what you couldn’t remember, but things had gotten heated and he had screamed that he should have never dated someone who wasn’t his soulmate.  “You don’t have a soulmate though, you’re just like me! We’re meant to be together because of what we lack!” He had laughed cruelly, “You really think we were meant to be together? What are you stupid?”  You watched in horror as he pushed his long sleeve up his arm to reveal a gorgeous tattoo of a bundle of yellow carnations. You couldn’t hear him anymore, you couldn’t see anything except for that bundle of carnations inked onto his arm. There was no doubt that it was the mark of his soulmate.  “Get out of my apartment.” That’s when the tears had started falling.
“Why’d you only call me when you’re high?” Childe muttered as he walked down the bustling city street. “She’s listening to that song again? What is it now, the third time this week?” He thought, pushing his way through the crowd that blocked the entrance to the subway. Childe had ignored his soulmate for as long as he remembered. He refused to communicate in any way, never drawing on his skin, never singing to a song no matter how catchy (ahaha for ✨plot✨); not once had he tried to reach out. It wasn’t because he didn’t care about them, oh how he longed to hold you in his arms and whisper sweet nothings in your ear, it was the exact opposite. Childe cared deeply for his soulmate and, in his mind, being the soulmate of someone deeply rooted in the mafia was more of a blessing than a curse. The Fatui were feared in most towns, known mainly for their debt collection tactics and their deep roots in politics at a national level. Childe had been taken in at a young age, handed over by his father in hopes to pay off his debt to the Fatui (yes I know in his actual backstory his father sent him to the Fatui in hopes to change is attitude, sorry I couldn’t find a way to fit that in properly). Childe had grown up, and soon rose up the ladder that was the Fatui, eventually becoming a so called “Harbinger,” one of the highest ranks within the Fatui. So, deciding that living life constantly worrying about his soulmate was not one he wished to live, Childe had decided to ignore his universe given other-half. That is until the universe had other plans.
It was supposed to be a simple job, to give someone in debt a little bit of incentive to pay the Fatui back. They had found that Kaeya was close to a woman named Y/N. After a little bit of digging they had found out that Kaeya was in a relationship with Y/N, and that he had constantly been in and out of her apartment until a few days ago. Despite his recent break in the pattern of visits, his calls to Y/N’s number had remained more or less the same. Stepping out of the subway car Childe found himself running through the job once more. Break into the apartment, kidnap Y/N (yes, I know it’s cliche), leave a note for Kaeya and leave with you until he payed back his debt. It’d be quite a bit easier than most of his previous jobs, shouldn’t take him longer than two hours; the majority of it being the drive. What Childe hadn’t been expecting when he picked the lock and opened your door, was to see the very person he was supposed to kidnap cocooned in blankets, sobbing, and listening to the exact song that had been playing in his head the entire way here. Raising your tear stained face the two of you made eye contact, your red and puffy eyes meeting his wide and terrified ones. There was no denying it for either of you, the syncing of your breathing, the song that was now playing through both of your heads, you two were soulmates. Childe wasn’t sure how to react, halfway through the door and unsure if he was supposed to come any closer, he just stood there, unmoving. A pure mixture of fear and joy was pounding through this veins as he stared back.
You on the other hand, had no idea how to feel. You had spent your entire life believing you didn’t have a soulmate, and yet here he was half way through your door and a very bewildered look on his face. He was handsome, there was no doubt about that but you couldn’t say that your first impression of him was the best- seeing as that he had picked your lock and broken into your apartment while you were crying your eyes out. The circumstances of you meeting him had been less than ideal, as was the history of your relationship with him. You were so happy to have finally met him, that gap in your chest finally filled... but that wasn’t the only thing that filled your chest at the current moment; pure, burning, unbridled rage pooled in your chest and spread through out your body. You had a soulmate, but not once had you heard from him. Not a single sung lyric, not a single doodle on your arm, no tattoo or shared pain, nothing from the man who now stood fully in your apartment. Before you could process what exactly you were doing a harsh smack echoed through the space of your apartment.
Childe wasn’t sure how to feel now. After finally walking all the way into your apartment he had watched as you sprung from your bundle of blankets and stormed towards him. Apparently your way of greeting your soulmate wasn’t a hug or a handshake, it was to slap him straight across the face with surprising force. Childe was now looking at your wall with a stinging cheek and a blank mind.  He found himself speaking to you before he could think about what he was about to say “Well that’s one way to greet your soulmate.” Perhaps that wasn’t the best thing to say to you. “Greet your soulmate? Greet your soulmate! ‘Greet your soulmate’ my ass I think I have every right to greet you like that when I didn’t know you existed until a couple of minutes ago! Keep in mind I have lived a soulmate less life for twenty-two years and here you are waltzing into my apartment after you picked the damned lock!” “At least I know you aren’t younger than me...?” And that’s how Childe found himself with not only a hand shaped mark on his right cheek, but a large goose egg on his forehead from the book you had unceremoniously flung at his face.
The two of you now sat on your couch, you with a freshly poured glass of wine and Childe with a bag of ice pressed to his forehead.  “So you mean to tell me that I have spent twenty-two years believing I didn’t have a soulmate, because you were part of the mafia and didn’t want to put my life at risk.” “That’s exactly what I’m saying, I’m so glad you under-” “God nobody told me that if I had a soulmate he was going to be such an idiot.” “-stand... I’m sorry what was that just now?” Of all the responses Childe had expected, yours wasn’t one of them. “I know you heard me perfectly fine.” You snapped back, reaching for the book that now sat on the coffee table. The look of pure fear on Childe’s face was one you wouldn’t forget as he raised the hand that wasn’t holding the ice pack in surrender.   Letting out a small huff you instead opted to grab your wine glass and drink the rest of the nearly full cup. “Look I could care less that you’re part of the fatui. While I don’t appreciate the fact you were going to kidnap me in order to get my ex to pay back his debt, I do understand why didn’t make yourself known all these years.” A guilty look overtook Childe’s face, one that made your heart ache, but you kept going. “We could have worked things out, I could have learned to protect myself better and you could continue to do your job. I understand you wanted to protect me physically, but you gravely miscalculated when it came to mentally protecting me.”  There was a beat of silence before Childe spoke, his words carrying an emotion you weren’t sure you could identify. Three words that carried so much meaning and heart, there wasn’t a doubt in your mind that he didn’t mean them. “I’m truly sorry.”
Silence overtook your apartment once more, yet it was somehow lighter than the last wave. A mutual understanding, and forgiveness. Sure your soulmate was an idiot for not contacting you, and sure you could have not thrown a book at his head, but he was there. And so no words were exchanged as you rose from your chair and sat down next to Childe, leaning against his chest as he wrapped his free arm around your waist. You would figure the rest out later, but for now it was just the two of you- and you were perfectly fine with that.
“So would it be too much to ask for a kiss?” “Don’t push your luck pretty boy.”

"Here, this is my number." Chuhan said while writing on a napkin. The summer heat was beating down on our heads and our drinks had condensation running down the glass. We both had our phones, yes, but in the moment we ignored the fact for the simple gesture of handing his number to me before he left with Minseok and Myungho. "I'm going to be busy for the next few months so I don't know if I'll be able to get over here much."
I smile and remember the first few times I saw him.
It was a few months ago. I had been frequenting a nice courtyard near a musical theatre that had a coffee cart and tables to seat at and spend sometime in the sun, doodling, journaling, or doing whatever I desired that day. I was doodling the theatre building because it was a cool looking building and I wanted to try my hand at drawing prospectives (it wasn't good, but it was worth the practice). A random guy sitting at the same long table with some of his friends had leaned over and started up a conversation with me. The random guys ended up being Minseok, Chuhan, and Myungho. We started chatting and then the next time I went, they showed up too. And the next time. And the next time. It kind of became a thing that we did. Sometimes Minseok and/or Myungho didn't show up. But Chuhan always did. It never really occurred to us to exchange phone numbers until today.
A pout forms on my lips as I begin to worry about Chuhan and his friends/coworkers.
"I hope they're not too busy." I murmur to myself adjusting my mask as we still all have to wear them. As I do this, it kind of occurs to me that I've never seen Minseok, Chuhan, or Myungho's faces without masks on.
I shrug off the thought and refocus on the small back alley I'm walking through. It's barely big enough for a car to fit down yet somehow the drivers here manage to squeeze through like it's no big deal.
Bobbing my head along to the music playing through my earphones, I don't hear the biker coming up behind me on the narrow road. Before I can register what's happening, the biker speeds up next to me, kicks out a leg and knocks me over, and then is speeding away as my forearm stings against the prickly ground.
"Hey!" A male voice shouts at the biker (who's too far away to care) from behind me as my knee echos the sting of my forearm.
I sit back on my butt and rip out my earbuds before gingerly looking at my injuries. My purse flew off my shoulder and landed a good foot away. My knee is a bit scratched up and my forearm is as well, though small blood droplets are starting to appear.
"Are you okay?" A male with blonde hair and soft asks, kneeling down next to me, and another appears standing on my other side. "Oh, you're bleeding."
"I'm okay, yeah." I say in a shaky voice, the shock of it all throwing me off guard. "I live just down the street, I'm okay."
"You should clean that off right away." The male standing says with concern, "Our company is literally right here, at least come and wash it off so it doesn't get infected."
Against my better judgement- the one that says going anywhere with strange males is bad- I nod. It's just something about their eyes and their posture. Plus, the one who screamed angrily at the biker is still staring in anger at the path the biker disappeared down minutes ago.
"Here, let me help you." The once kneeling male offers me a hand, "My name's Jisoo."
"(y/n)." I tell him and take his offered hand. I try to put pressure on my scraped knee but the sting intensifies and I stumble to regain balance on the uninjured leg.
"Careful." Jisoo warns, gripping my arm tighter.
"Just back here." The other male points to my left. Standing around us and the entrance of a building are 11 other males, all masked, of course.
"Someone come and grab her stuff." Jisoo calls out to the group who is looking at me with concern.
The other guys start to shuffle around, one even holds the door open a few steps before Jisoo and I reach the door. I notice, though, that three guys stand a little ways away, all staring at me dumbfounded, and very quiet. I take a couple seconds to look them over and they're wearing outfits EXTREMELY similar to what Minseok, Myungho, and Chuhan were wearing.
"Watch your step." The one holding the door open says as a warning and I have to revert my attention to where I'm placing my feet.
Jisoo turns his head and says something to someone behind me while I tune him out and take in the interior of the building. The white walls reflect the fluorescent lights and brighten the room. Turns this way and that and up a small flight of stairs and Jisoo leads me into a large open conference room, which looks oddly familiar.
"Sit here." Jisoo instructs me and pulls out a chair. He then pulls out a chair for himself.
I lower myself into the chair and try to bend my knee. Bad idea. The sting makes me suck in a breath and squeeze my eyes shut. It's the kind of sting that's sharp and sometimes causes shivers to run down my spine. The worst kind of sting, in my opinion.
"Here's the stuff, hyung." Another guy comes trotting into the room with a red cross labeled white box. Another brings a bowl of water and a couple of hand towels. The others gather in the room with mumbled conversations.
I pull the mask off my face and lay it down on the table as someone else sets my phone and purse next to my mask.
"Thanks." I smile at him and he nods back.
After taking his mask off, Jisoo wordlessly dampens one of the towels then pats the space between his legs.
"You don't have -." I try to refute his offer but his face silences my voice. For a second I forget how to breathe but my scrapes quickly remind me that I need to otherwise they're going to rain hellfire on my nerves. "You're not just a random Jisoo." I exhale in shock.
Joshua leans back, slightly afraid that I'll start screaming. I look around at the others and slowly piece together the number: 13, and the room we're in: it's the same as where Seventeen filmed their fifth year anniversary idea session. I'm just looking at it from a VERY different angle.
Everyone in the room seems to be holding their breath, uncertain about how I'm going to react. I think I surprised them because I definitely know I surprised myself with my response.
"Okay." I say surprisingly calmly in response to Joshua's instruction for me to put my leg up. "But only cause I have one arm out of commission."
And like someone took the kettle off of the heat, the members all exhale.
"You sure you're okay?" Seungcheol asks, taking his mask off and the others follow.
I nod, my nervousness being replaced with confidence the longer I'm under the realization that I am being helped by the Seventeen.
I nod but the action is cut short as Joshua cleans off my scraped knee causing me to inhale quickly and scrunch my face in pain.
"Sorry." Joshua mutters but continues to wipe away the dirt from my skin.
"It's fine." I squeeze out through clenched teeth. "Almost done." Joshua tells him and continues to clean the scrape.
"So, where were you coming from?" Seungkwan wonders with curious eyes in attempt to provide some distraction from the pain.
"Uhm, I was just hanging out with some friends." I answer him, forcing myself to look way from my knee.
"Was it far from here?" Hoshi followed up.
I shake my head, "It was just in the courtyard by the theatre that's like 6 blocks away or something."
"Hey, isn't that where you guys said you were going?" Dino points a finger towards Vernon, DK, and The8.
I glance at the three and they're the ones dressed the same as Minseok, Chuhan, and Myungho. The room is silent as the three share a nervous look. Then Joshua breaks the silence by ripping open a bandaid.
"We did..." DK trails off, staring directly at Vernon and Myungho. I feel Joshua stick the bandaid over my knee before patting my foot, silently saying that I can lower my leg.
"Maybe you guys saw each other!" Jun comments happily.
"I... I think I did..." I stare at the three avoiding any eye contact with me. The pieces slowly starting to fit together. Joshua reaches out for my arm which I easily volunteer over. "Oh, I definitely di- oh, mother-!" I yelp mid-sentence as Joshua wipes away the dirt and blood.
"Sorry, sorry." Joshua mumbles apologetically.
"It's fine." I breathe out and redirect back to the three who's familiar eyes aren't just from the computer screen. "Chuhan, Minseok, and Myungho?" I question them on the names they used with me.
DK and Vernon just smile while The8 adds a tiny and shy wave.
"And you were going to be too busy to come meet with me because of the comeback..." I continue to guess.
They nod and some members stare at the three in awe while the others snicker under their breath. Joshua just continues to wipe away at my arm which is still stinging.
"And you made up names because....?" I lean forward, trailing off to wait for an answer.
"We didn't know how you'd react to us?" Vernon offers but states it more as a question.
"This is going to sting." Joshua informs me just mere milliseconds before spraying something that most definitely stings.
"Ugh." I groan, "I'm never walking down tiny roads again."
"You're going to have to if you're going to come visit us." Seungkwan pouts.
"Who said I was visiting?" I question, realizing a couple seconds later how that actually sounds coming out of my mouth.
"No one but I know Vernon gave you his number so I was kind of guessing." Seungkwan replies as Joshua rips open a few bandaids to cover up my injured arm.
"You mean Chuhan." I correct him with a smirk.
"CHUHAN?" Hoshi repeats the name, "You told her your name was CHUHAN?" He throws his head back and laughs out loud. Dino, Jun, Jeonghan, and Seungcheol join him while others just smile in amusement.
"Okay but like did (y/n) never question how ridiculous the name was?" Mingyu interrogates me, amused at my naiveness.
I shrug, pulling my arm closer after Joshua lets it go. "I know people sometimes have crazy names and I've heard weirder names so it seemed like a plausible name."
"Okay but did it never hit you because DK hyung used his name backwards and The8 hyung used his korean name!" Vernon wonders with a tiny ounce of whine laced in.
"I couldn't see your face. And the masks obscure a lot of people's visuals." I explain and wave my hand in front of my face to emphasis. "Including celebrities. Isn't that the reason celebs constantly wore them before we were all required to?"
"She has a point." The8 points at me in agreement.
"So were you boys ever going to spill your secret?" I ask, leaning my cheek against my fist.
They all stutter with a loss of words.
"We're taking that as a no." Hoshi crosses his arms and moves to stand behind me.
"Yes we are." Seungkwan agrees and joins Hoshi.
I start to panic slightly at the thought that I might have started a rift between the members but Vernon's laugh breaks that tension.
"No, it's not like that." He explains, "We were going to tell her just like not for a little while."
"It was nice to talk with someone who didn't know who we were." Dokyeom continues while I just look at them in amusement.
"I just tagged along cause it got me out of the dorm." The8 gives his very simple reason. Jun chuckles and gives him a high-five.
"So, you knew I was a fan from the multitude of times we discussed music and yet you still didn't bother to let me know?" I question.
"Yeah... kind of." Vernon confirms, smiling sheepishly.
"Fair." I nod and lean back in my chair.
"So you're not upset?" DK asks, curious at my response.
I shake my head, "Why would I be? You were trying to protect yourselves cause I could've been a crazed fan. Makes sense. I probably would've done the same thing."
Before they can reply, my phone starts to buzz with a call. I smile apologetically to the members before answer the call.
"Where are you?" My friend asks over the phone, "You were supposed to be here like 25 minutes ago."
"Shit." I guess being knocked over completely made me forget my plans. "I'll be right there."
"I forgot I was supposed to meet my friend." I tell them apologetically.
"Yeah, yeah. Go ahead." Seungcheol nods, "Next time, let us buy you a meal." "You don't have to." I shake my head quickly.
Seungcheol holds up a hand, "No, no, I want to. This all happened in front of our building so I feel bad."
"It wasn't your fault though..." I try to reason with him.
"It was that stupid biker." Vernon mumbles angrily.
"Still, you'll let us know if you have free time?" Joshua presses.
I nod in defeat. "I will." I say and stand up then stand slightly awkwardly as no one moves.
"Why don't you walk her out, Vernon?" Wonwoo suggests and I nearly forgot he was there as he was so quiet standing in the back with Woozi.
"Yeah, walk her out." Hoshi agrees and nudges me towards the door while The8 does the same to Vernon.
Vernon holds the door open for me and I walk out holding my bandaged arm close to my chest.
"Sorry for lying." Vernon apologies once we're down the stairs.
"You don't need to apologize." I say, "It makes a lot of sense why you didn't tell me so don't feel bad. Again, I would've done the same thing."
Vernon smiles softly, "Nice to know it wasn't a completely crazy idea."
"You were the one to suggest it?" I question in amusement.
"No, The8 hyung did." He explains, "I just agreed to it before DK hyung could suggest a crazier idea."
"Good thinking." I compliment his train of thought.
"You sure you're going to be okay?" He asks, voice full of concern.
I nod with certainty, "Yeah, I'll be fine. It'll be an annoyance for like two days and then it'll start to heal and I'll forget about it."
"Good, good." Vernon inhales then exhales, "I can't believe a person can be that rude. Especially in broad daylight." He releases his bottled up annoyance.
"Yeah, but without them, you would still be Chuhan to me." I reason with him, seeing the bright side of the situation.
"True, but still." Vernon scrunches up his nose. "You still have my number right?" He asks as we reach the front door.
I search my purse for the napkin, "Yeah, it's right here." I pull out the scrunched up napkin.
Vernon nods in satisfaction, "Text or call me sometime. I'm sure we could hang out more privately before Coups hyung forces you to him buy you a meal."
I smile and let out an airy laugh, "I'd like that."
"I'll be waiting for your message then." Vernon says happily.
"Thanks for helping me out." I say and step outside.
"Not a problem." He replies and both of us hesitate to end the encounter.
"I, uh, I should probably get going. Don't want to keep my friend waiting." I smile lightly, deciding to break the barrier first.
"Yeah, yeah. Get there safely." Vernon reminds me as I step away and he waves back as I wave at him.
I turn around to face the direction I'm walking and quickly pull out my phone.
"Bruh, you will NOT believe what just happened!" I text friend.
"WHAT?" She replies in one second flat.
I giggle with giddiness and my fingers type as fast as they can, unable to contain my excitement. "So I was knocked over by a rude biker..."

please please plewase tell more literally Anything about your first blood the descent crossover i love it so much please
asmr i just wanted to draw gore featuring my dad but first blood isnt good for gore purposes but the descent is so dmsljfkds
ended up dissociating all day so all i have is poor quality doodle
Tumblr media
[looks at coherent time dates][throws them out the window]
anyways
tweaking first blood plot so i can do what i want but like post the mines get fucking blown up so like cut to rambo wandering the mines to try and get out but then making his way into an Actual cave system and not the mines
but also turns out the network of caves is connected to the cave system descent gang is in because it never says where they are other than the states so theyre in washington state now
theyre having fun and arent aware of the crawlers yet its nice
cut to rambo with a torch trying to figure out where the fuck he is and can Vaguely make out that theres something else in the caves
he directly confronts the crawlers First in like that one blood pool and tries to head out after but cave slippery momence so [casts spell of slipping in the dark and taking an involuntary nap]
descent ladies are under fucking attack one by one and when they reach uhh the blood pool find his torch like barely lit but its there so they find him and go to help him out but theyre under attack before they can get him out of the hole
he wakes up to asmr women screaming as theyre being eaten alive and crawlers screaming and is struggling to get back out but he manages but a little too late to help anyone but he does try to help beth from bleeding out to death though its not very effective but he keeps her alive a long enough for sarah to spawn in
sarah is [wh] at this blood drenched man but he helped beth out so hes ok :) shes [ah] about beth knowing shes going to die and after mercy killing beth asks rambo if like he knows whats going on
hes just as clueless but hey theyre working together now so thats happening
juno and co get fucking Lost on their own but sarah wants to try and save sam and rebecca from juno since juno yknow was the one that caused beth to bleed out
mission failed
so asmr sarah obliterates junos knee and she and rambo try to head out through the uhh remaining entrance theyre aware of but hey girl path is blocked by crawlers and theres too many to take on with just axes, a knife, an ice axe and few things of rope they managed to recollect from sam and rebbecas corpses
so now the 2 are stuck in the caves until the crawlers leave after a few attempts of trying to lead them away with noise that theyre learning so now they gotta try and hopefully find a new way out without dying or survive in the area long enough for the crawlers to lose interest in the area and leave
and thats what i got rn

“Please do not tell me you are already doodling on a cup for Y/N,” Hongjoong more-or-so states rather than asks, as he walks into the break room to grab some more coffee beans from the storage unit. Yunho looks up, caught red handed with a paper cup in one hand and, currently, a blue sharpie in the other. Yunho opens his mouth to respond, but Hongjoong holds up his hand, stopping him.
“Don’t even bother making excuses,” Hongjoong laughs before disappearing into the storage unit for a moment, “you might as well write your number on it!”
“What?” Yunho exclaims, “no way! That’s too embarrassing. She’ll think it’s weird.”
“Yunho,” Hongjoong sighs walking back into the break room, “you’ve had a crush on her for the past three months. I’m about to ask her out for you.”
“You wouldn’t dare,” Yunho glares at him. Hongjoong raises his eyebrows and briefly smirks.
“Pretty sure six o’clock is in ten minutes,” Hongjoong teases.
“Hongjoong, stop,” Yunho whines causing Hongjoong to laugh at his best friend.
“I’m teasing!” Hongjoong laughs at him while he walks back towards the door to head back to work. He stops and looks back at Yunho, “seriously though, write your number on it. She’ll definitely text you.” Hongjoong exits the room leaving Yunho alone once again. Yunho takes a deep breath to calm his racing nerves and looks back at the doodled cup in his hand. He’s not the best artist, but he tries his best when it comes to decorating you cup. He always starts with a big pink heart on the side that has “SMILE” written in the center. Then he moves on to different colors and randomly doodles shapes, objects, and words on the rest of the cup.
Yunho always writes little messages on cups for customers, but something sparked it in him to do something a little more, and you happened to be the first person he did that on. So he left a little heart next to the message he wrote. Little did he know you planned on continuing to come back to the little coffee shop. The first few times Yunho just did the message and little heart, but when he began to really recognize you and start talking to you he started adding more and more doodles. Each time you came in one more doodle was added to the cup. Now it’s to the point where he has to sit in the back on his break and decorate your cup.
You on the other hand love the doodled cups Yunho gives you. You actually don’t live near the coffee shop Yunho works at, nor do you work near there either. You first stumbled upon the coffee shop after visiting you boyfriends apartment… well now ex-boyfriend. You fell in love with their coffee, and you take the bus everyday after work to get some. You also took a liking to both the young baristas of the shop which you’ve made a mutual relationship with both of them. Some days you’re able to have a small chat with them, others you aren’t due to the amount of college student’s who decide they want to stay up all night long doing last minute assignments.
You patiently wait on the bus; the traffic is heavier than usual today and you keep checking the time on your phone. You’re not really sure why you’re too worried if you’re going to arrive at exactly six. Most days you’re either there just before or just after. So you’re not sure why you feel a little on edge today. You’re not going on a date. You don’t have any extra work to complete. And you’re more than sure that you don’t have any plan other than getting your coffee and talking to Yunho and Hongjoong.
When you notice the time slowly inching a little further past six and the bus not having moved in the past five minutes, you ask the bus driver to let you off where you are. You get onto the busy sidewalks and make your way towards an area that’s not as crowded to check the map on your phone to check how far you’re from the coffee shop.
“Four blocks?” You mumble, “that’s not too bad.” You put your phone back into your bag and begin you small trek.
“It’s almost 6:30,” Yunho slightly whines as he props his elbows up on the low counter having to bend down to do so.
“She might just be late,” Hongjoong tells him as he washes some of the equipment they use. Yunho loudly sighs causing Hongjoong to just roll his eyes. “She’ll be here Yunho. Don’t worry too much about it.” Yunho knows Hongjoong right, but he doesn’t like waiting. He’s usually not impatient- he’s just excited.
Yunho perks up when he hears the bell above the coffee shop door rings, but deflates a little when he see’s a few college students walk in instead. So to make time pass Yunho takes their orders and starts making their drinks. Just as Yunho is starting on the last of the three drinks ordered, and being in his own little world Hongjoong’s voice breaks him out of his thoughts.
“Y/N! You’re here!” Hongjoong greets you as you walk through the door.
“Hey. I had to walk the last four blocks because traffic wasn’t moving,” you laugh as you walk up to the counter.
“I’ll have Yunho start on your drink,” Hongjoong tells you, already knowing what you’re wanting… well it’s not hard since you order the same thing every time. You hand Hongjoong you card and without you knowing he adds on the employee discount as he does every time and charges you. Yunho finishes up his previous drink order and calls out for the students names.
Hongjoong hands him the doodled cup he left near the register earlier and begins working away.
“So how was your day?” Hongjoong asks as he moves towards the pick up counter.
“It was long. I honestly haven’t had a good week, so I’m happy for it to be Saturday tomorrow,” you tell him, “how has work been? Doesn’t seem busy tonight.”
“It hasn’t been. Which is nice. My feet aren’t killing me for once,” Hongjoong jokes causing the two of you to laugh.
“How about you Yunho?” You ask looking over Hongjoong’s shoulder. Yunho perks up like a puppy who’s been asked if they want a treat.
“Oh, I’m good,” Yunho shyly smiles towards you, “just been keeping myself busy.”
“Being a lovesick puppy,” Hongjoong rolls his eyes before slightly laughing.
“Oooh. You like someone Yunho?” You ask cheerfully.
“He sure does,” Hongjoong quickly answers for him, “doesn’t shut up ever. I’ve been bugging him to ask her out and he won’t.” Yunho continues to make your drink as he feels his nerves really kick in. Not only that but his ears have turned a bright pink because of how flustered he is. He feels as if he’s about to be caught.
“You should ask her out,” you encourage Yunho, “she’d be the luckiest girl in the world.” Yunho turns around, holding your completed drink.
“Plus she’d be dumb to say no,” Hongjoong adds and you nod your head agreeing.
“Y-you think?” Yunho asks as he hands you your drink, slightly stuttering but he catches himself.
“I know,” you smile, “you should really do it. Does she come here a lot?” Yunho presses his lips together tightly but manages to give you a small smile and nod his head. “You should totally write your number or like ‘date?’ on the cup then! Really cliche but it’s cute.”
“Okay. I’ll do it,” Yunho shyly laughs and wipes his hands down on his apron out of nervousness.
“Good,” you tell him and you look at your phone to check the time, “I think I’m going to head out. I’ve had a long day and still haven’t had dinner. I better hear more about this girl tomorrow.” You point at Yunho teasing him a little, causing him to blush.
“Oh you will!” Hongjoong smiles and waves as you make your way to the door.
“Bye boys!” you smile. The boys wave back and you leave the coffee shop and walk to the bus stop around the corner.
“You put your number on the cup,” Hongjoong smirks having seen the number written on the cup as Y/N held it. Hongjoong leans against the counter, crossing his arms. Yunho doesn’t respond as he cleans the equipment tools he just used to make Y/N’s drink.
“YOU REALIZE THIS RIGHT?” Hongjoong grabs the tall boy and shakes him, “she’s going to call or text you within the next hour.”
“You don’t know that,” Yunho quietly tells him.
“You idiot,” Hongjoong slaps his hand to his own face and shakes his head, “she literally said ‘she’d be the luckiest girl in the world’.”
“But she wasn’t even thinking about if it was her,” Yunho clarifies.
“She. Will. Text. You,” Hongjoong tells him, “I bet you $20.” Yunho looks doubtfully at the red headed boy.
———
The traffic hasn’t seen to lighten at all, and it had already been half an hour since you arrived to the bus stop. You drank just about all of your coffee. You had been observing the little doodles on the cup here and there. Usually you wait till you’ve drink everything so you don’t spill it. So you quickly swallow the last of the coffee in one go. You lean the cup more to it’s side and begin looking at all the little doodles.
“Always creative with his ideas,” You laugh looking at the multiple different colored flowers, and his attempt to draw himself and Hongjoong. As your eyes scan over everything you double back when you spot something other than a drawing.
“Wait,” you whisper and you count the numbers, “oh my god.”  You think back on your conversation with the boys and it hit you. Yunho has a crush on you. Without second thought you hurry back to the coffee shop… hopefully his shift hasn’t ended.
You open the door and Hongjoong looks up from the his phone laying on the counter. He just smiles and points to the break room. You hurry back and open the door loudly, causing a startled Yunho to jump. When Yunho lays his eyes on you, he instantly knows. The two of you quietly stare at each other for a moment before you speak up.
“You like me?” You ask with a surprised smile on your face, and you watch Yunho’s ears turn pink, “you do!”
“You don’t need to make fun of me,” Yunho quietly tells you, looking at the ground.
“Make fun of you? Yunho, why would I- I like you Yunho,” you tell him, and Yunho’s head shoots up, “yeah I come to the coffee shop everyday, travel across town for it, to have your coffee and to talk to you and Hongjoong. But I want to see you. You always make my days better Yunho, even if all you do is smile and give me my doodled cup. You know I’ve kept every single one? They’re stacked up on a shelf in my room.” Yunho’s eyes slightly widen and his mouths drops.
“You’ve kept every cup I’ve doodled on?” Yunho asks breaking into a small smile.
“Why would I throw away the one thing I have of you?” You ask, “they hold memories.” Yunho drops his jacket, walks up to you, and envelopes you into a hug. You hug him back, and you two just hold each other for a minute. Yunho pulls away and you look up at him. He gently cups your face and leans down to plant a sweet short kiss to your lips. When he pulls away he gives you his famous big smile.
“How about dinner since you still haven’t ate?” Yunho suggests, now in a giggly mood.
“I’d love to,” you answer, smiling back at him. Yunho grabs his jacket, closes his locker, and the two of you walk out of the break room.
“FINALLY!” Hongjoong cheers, “seriously Y/N, it was weeks. Thank you.” You laugh as Yunho’s ears turn pink for a third time tonight and the two of you wave good-bye to Hongjoong before leaving the coffee shop, the doodled cup still in your hand.

Somehow a very simple drawing idea spiraled into me Thinking About Things.... I didn't end up doing any additional drawings for the concepts I wound up considering (aside from some notebook doodles that didn't turn out good enough to post) but I'm putting some ramblings under the cut (ID in alt text)
Tumblr media
So, suppose Neil does encounter Yotsuba Koiwai in the field instead of the bad luck demon. How'd she end up in Massachusetts? Don't think too hard about it, but let's assume that she got lost somehow and is wandering around all by herself. Hey, actually, maybe this is from before her dad adopted her... or in an au where he never met her? Hmm, much to think about right off the bat. Anyway...
Neil decides that she's a good luck charm because of her hair and he cheerfully shows her off to Ryan and Kevin. They decide to take her home with them (because they're a bunch of bozos who don't consider the ramifications of something like that)
Yotsuba is kind of confused by these guys and their whole deal ("New kids? Ahaha, but you're grown-ups!") But they make a good impression on her because she's never met grown-ups who hang out in fields picking clovers and flying kites before. It's weird but it's also fun, y'know?
You know how the second scene from the lost episode was supposed to be them building a house of cards? I think they're still doing that while Yotsuba is sitting on the floor next to them stacking blocks. Eventually she says she's hungry; cue the "oh geez what do kids like??" discussion
She says she likes milk so they give her some "milk chocolate" to tide her over while Ryan cooks her something
K: Ryan's a good cook, y'know. He makes a deadly batch of cookies, literally.
N: Geez, don't put it like that, you're gonna make her think we're trying to poison her or something! [Aside] You're not putting any poison in there, are you, Ryan?
R: What was that? Put poison in this?
N&K: NO DON'T!!
It's fine, he makes a normal plate of curry or something and Yotsuba loves it enough that she decides to keep hanging out with them
We already know Kevin is good with children because his introduction as a character is him entertaining a kid and he canonically ends up with grandkids as an old man. He takes Yotsuba to the park and they play catch with a football
However, the football accidentally hits her in the face and she becomes distrustful of him from that point, much to his chagrin
Now clearly nkotr doesn't take place in the same universe/timeline/whatever as the video "MarcoBat16 Visits Neil Cicierega" but I'm going to borrow a bit of lore from that video and say that Neil is protective of his puppets and doesn't want other people touching them. This causes a bit of tension at first but the issue dissolves once Neil and Ryan bring out some other puppets and toy-type things that they don't mind if Yotsuba borrows
On that note I think Yotsuba is just young enough not to register anything about Ryan as creepy or weird. Like you know those stories about little kids who love scary monster animatronics or whatever because they haven't been taught that those things are scary yet? It's like that. Ryan is like "and here's my weird mannequin head and my voodoo doll!" and Yotsuba is like "wow awesome!! :D"
I also think that she braids his hair and puts lots of bows in it and stuff. She's never met a guy with long hair before so this is an exciting new opportunity for her
Neil tries to teach her to play video games and it doesn't work at all, she's still too little to really get how the games work and just hammers madly on the buttons. He somehow takes this as another sign that she's a good luck charm, because ever since he started playing against her he always wins!
Kevin makes several attempts to win back Yotsuba's good graces, including introducing her to Rocky because kids generally like dogs. This backfires because Rocky jumps up and barks too loud, which startles Yotsuba. She warms up to the dog quickly enough, though
What finally does succeed in getting Yotsuba to trust and like Kevin again is him agreeing to lend her some money so she can buy candy after both Neil and Ryan told her no
Assuming that the premise here is just that Yotsuba got extremely lost while visiting overseas, this would be about when her dad finally finds her and takes her home. HOWEVER, assuming that this is a timeline where Mr. Koiwai never adopted her....
After she hangs out with them for... let's say a couple of weeks? The new kids decide she should "start pulling her weight" and get her to help them out with filming their next webisode. She has lots of fun with the camera, but they don't really teach her how to use it (they assume she already knows even though there's no reason why she should know something like that) so all the shots are really unfocused with lots of shaky cam and poor framing, etc.
But it's too late to re-record so they submit it to the studio as like an avante-garde found footage piece and the studio actually approves
After a quick "background check" to make sure she's not going to turn out like Spencer (she passes this test with flying colours because she doesn't even understand the concept of liking things ironically, or know what Myspace is or what onion rings are) they officially welcome Yotsuba onto the team :3 Her theme colour is green, of course

High Expectations - Ch7
You know those 1 minute doodles people do?  Well this is pretty much the digital equivalent.  As soon as I sat down I had a kid perched on each knee and a constant refrain of ‘Can I go on the magic drawing pad?’ which made doing anything just a little tricky.  I would love to have half a day to sit down uninterrupted and get to grips with even the basics of digital drawing but that’s not going to happen any time soon.  Instead you have to make do with what I could manage around two small humans (literally - I had one tucked into each arm).
More thanks to @willow-salix who has put up with my ramblings every step of the way.
Earlier parts: One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six

Chapter Seven
Tumblr media
Gordon was awake long before Virgil the following day.  He quietly flicked through the TV channels, the volume down low, until he heard his brother moving around in the bedroom.  Experience had taught him not to disturb Virgil’s slumber unless he fancied being in close proximity to a grumpy bear.
As Virgil stumbled through his morning routine Gordon made himself useful fixing breakfast.  He searched through cupboards and the fridge and was relieved to see that Virgil kept the apartment well stocked.  Both brothers had a voracious appetite and a fast metabolism.  By the time Virgil had finished his shower the eggs were in the pan and the coffee was brewing.  When he emerged from his bedroom wearing yet another red checked shirt Gordon was just plating up.
“Hey, you can stay more often.”  The appreciation was mumbled around a slice of toast from the large stack in the middle of the table.  The portions were generous and the eggs were light and fluffy with just the right amount of seasoning.  “When did you learn to cook?”
“Right around the time you and John moved out and me and Alan got shipped to the coast.  Dad wasn’t often back in time for dinner.”
Virgil could sense there was a story to tell there but knew better than to press the issue, especially before he had had a second cup of coffee.  During his own visit back home he had taken on the cooking without even thinking about it and hadn’t given a second thought as to who normally kept the household fed.
“I’ll cook tonight if you want” Gordon said, tucking into his own pile of eggs.  “If you want pizza though you’ll have to ask Alan next time you’re back.  That kid has a knack for dough.  Just don’t touch his pasta, I’ve never known someone find simple boiling so hard.”
“Sounds great, you can show me what you can do.  Maybe you’ll end up at catering college.”
Virgil’s joke fell flat as he sensed the shields rising up around Gordon.  It seemed any mention of the future made his brother touchy as hell.  He made a mental note to avoid all talk of future plans for the rest of Gordon’s stay, even if they were only made in jest.  Unfortunately he still had his own work to do, troubled brother or not.
“So Gordon, I’ve got a lab slot today.  I was going to take you in and show you around but perhaps engineering isn’t really your thing.”
Gordon shook his head gently.
“Hey, there’s a pool a couple of blocks over, it should be pretty quiet at the moment.  How about you put yourself through your paces this morning then we can hang out in the afternoon once I’ve got back from campus.”
This sounded infinitely preferable to Gordon.  The routine of swimming was ingrained now and he had thrown his kit into his bag as a matter of habit.  The idea of watching Virgil doing…whatever it was Virgil did was not appealing, especially now knowing of his father’s ulterior motive for suggesting he spend time with one of his college based brothers.
With breakfast over and the dishes carefully washed the brothers departed and headed their separate ways; Gordon heading to the pool while Virgil made his way onto campus.
Just a few short minutes later Gordon was stood, bag in hand, outside the pool building.  It was shut.  A noticed taped to the door proclaimed the apologies of the management for unscheduled maintenance and the assertion that the facilities should be open again the following day.
Gordon dug out his phone and tried to call Virgil but the line connected straight through to voicemail.  Virgil had warned him that there was a policy of no phones in the labs and workshops and it looked like he had already missed the opportunity to get hold of his sibling.  He didn’t have a key to the apartment either.  Apparently the spare set was with the letting agent, whoever that was, but even if he could find the right place there is no way they would just hand over the keys to him even if he did have the right surname.  Instead of a morning burning off his frustrations in the water he was faced with the prospect of being stuck in a strange city, alone for the next few hours until Virgil resurfaced from his project.
He wandered back past the apartment and towards campus with the vague hope that he might bump into Virgil but deep down he knew that hope was futile.  Shopping didn’t appeal and galleries and museums had never been his thing.  He was destined for a boring morning.
His footsteps led him to a small square and he flopped down onto one of the hard, metal benches that lined the perimeter.  He may as well wait here as anywhere.  The wind was picking up and the enclosed space gave him some protection from the chill air that felt like it was blowing straight off the surrounding mountains.  The clouds above looked dark and stormy and the day had turned unseasonably cold.  The turbulent sky matched his mood.  It felt like the entire world was conspiring to stop him from swimming.
The first rain drops soon began to fall.  Heavy, penetrating globules of water that hit the ground with force before bouncing back up again several inches.  Within seconds the drops had turned into a raging downpour; the sort of rain that obscures your vision and soaks everything in an instant.  The drumming sound of rain hitting concrete and roof slates filled Gordon’s ears with white noise as though attempting to drown out his very thoughts.  He sat there as the stinging rain beat against his body, turning the exposed skin of his cheeks a raw pink.  In some perverse way the discomfort was enjoyable.  A penance for being the sole aquatic element in a family that revolved around the sky and the stars.
A hand landed on Gordon’s shoulder and broke through his reverie.  He spun round on the bench to be confronted by a young man in military uniform gesturing to the store front behind him.  He didn’t have much choice but to follow as the man picked up his bag and dashed back to the cover of the building.
As the door slammed shut behind him the noise of the storm became muted.  Two men were in the room, one sat behind a desk while Gordon’s assailant and bag thief was shaking water off his cap.  Both looked to be about 25 and were in contrasting uniforms.
“So, were you aiming on hypothermia or just trying to drown yourself out there?” his attacker come rescuer asked.
Gordon just shook his head mutely.  His hair was slicked down against his head and the action caused trickles of water to drip down his cheeks.  He unzipped his kit bag, pulled out a towel, and scruffed his hair back to some semblance of dryness.
“I was meant to go swimming but the pool was closed.”
“And swimming in that downpour looked like a better idea than going home?”
“I’m just visiting.  I’m locked out until my brother gets back from class.”
“So how long do you need to wait?”
Gordon looked at his watch.  “He’ll probably be another couple of hours.”
“Well you can’t go back out in that, you’re already shivering.”
This was true.  Stood there with his clothes plastered to his skin Gordon became uncomfortably aware of just how cold and wet his was.  He tensed his core muscles in an attempt to still the shivers that made his body tremble.
The man behind the desk stood up and headed over to a coffee pot that was set up in the corner of the room.  He called over his shoulder to his companion.  “Kid’s not getting ill on my watch.  I’ll make some coffee and you can take him upstairs and stick his clothes in the dryer.”
Gordon felt like he had little choice but to follow the man through a door at the back of the office and up a narrow set of stairs.  They were right about one thing; he couldn’t sit out in the rain for hours.
The upstairs of the building was converted into a tiny flat and the two military personnel evidently lived up there, despite their conflicting services.  There was a small living area with kitchenette built along one wall and a couple of extra doors that Gordon assumed led to a bathroom and bedrooms.  Gordon soon found himself kitted out in a pair of dry sweatpants and a hoodie while his own sopping wet clothes were put through a drying cycle.
Back downstairs, with borrowed clothes and a hot coffee warming him through, Gordon began to take more notice of his surroundings and his temporary companions.  Emblems of the World Security Patrol and its four component parts adorned the walls.  Badges of the World Space Patrol, World Navy, World Army Air Force and Universal Secret Service all had their place.
With nothing else to do until his clothes had finished drying Gordon settled in to make the best of it.  The two staff seemed personable enough.  One wore the uniform of the World Army while the other was clad in the WASP insignia of World Aquanaut Security Patrol, the submarine service of the World Navy.  The pair were good natured with a touch of friendly inter-service rivalry.  Coming from a military family himself Gordon was well versed in the different factions although he was more familiar with the United States Air Force that the various world forces on display.
“What is this place?”
“Joint Services Recruitment Office” came the response.  “The World Security Patrol has offices all over the place.  Good engineers are like gold dust which is why this office is so close to the campus.  The different services staff it on rotation, two at a time.”
“So how did the pair of you end up here?” Gordon asked.
“Random allocation for me” answered the World Army representative, who Gordon soon learned was called Daniels.
“I’d just got back from an extended submarine tour and my C.O. thought I could do with some sunshine.  Not much of that today though; I stayed drier under water” laughed Green, the WASP who had pulled him in from the storm.  “It’s not too bad though, except for the land snails.”
“Hey!”  Daniels launched a promotional stress ball at Green.  “Less of the land snail you jumped up sardine.  Thank goodness I’ve only got to put up with you for another eight weeks.”
The two men evidently got on well together.  The traded insults were laced with laughter.  It was a far cry from the attitude his eldest brother displayed while in uniform.  Maybe it was the lack of officers to keep them in check or maybe Scott just didn’t have a sense of humour any more that accounted for the difference; the pair in front of him certainly weren’t dour or serious.
“I can’t see Scott being happy getting sent to one of these places.”
“Scott?”
“Eldest brother.  He’s Air Force.  He’s not happy unless he breaks mach three at least twice a week.”
This description was greeted by a double eye roll, evidently WASP and World Army were prepared to unite against a common enemy.
“That’s flyboys for you.  I guess this isn’t the brother who locked you out?”
“Nope, Virgil’s here doing his postgrad at the moment.  Some sort of engineering project.  I’m only here for a few days while Dad is out of town.”
“So you like to swim, huh?  Think you can swim 200 meters in under three minutes?”
“Stop trying to recruit the kid, Green.”
“Hey!  It’s my job at the moment, of course I’m going to have a try.”
A competitive glint appeared in Gordon’s eye.
“Think I can do it in under three minutes?” he mused, cocking his head as though seriously considering the question.  “I know I can do it in one, forty-four point two.”
“Like hell you can.  Jeez, that’s gotta be some kind of record.”
Gordon just smirked.  Out of the pool and with clothes on he wasn’t particularly recognisable, his father’s policy of minimal contact with the media had seen to that.  The pair in the recruiting office only knew his first name and had nothing to go on to connect him to the Olympics.  He couldn’t help but feel a little bit boastful at the chance to show off his achievement.
“Yup.  Butterfly.  Set it out at the Games a few weeks back.”
“Wait?  You’re Gordon Tracy?”
Gordon nodded.
“Bloody hell.  The guys back at base aren’t gonna believe I had you in my recruiting office.”
Green was now actively goggling at him and even the more reserved Daniels was looking slightly thunderstruck.
“Told you to stop with the recruitment spiel.  He’s got better things to do than mess about in your tin cans.”
“Those tin cans are highly specialised submarines I’ll have you know.”
The pair were back to the ribbing that seemed to characterise their working relationship.  Gordon looked on enviously at the obvious camaraderie that existed despite their differing career paths.  It showed a team spirit that he yearned for and the idea of locking himself away from his family at the bottom of the ocean was sounding pretty good at the moment.
Before his brain had fully caught up with his mouth he blurted out “So what would I have to do other than swim to get my hands on one of those subs?”
Gordon left the recruitment office a few hours later with more than just dry clothes.  Stuffed in the bottom of his kit bag was a print out of the scores from the aptitude and reaction tests he had sat there which showed he more than met the standard required for WASP.  On top of these Green had placed an application form which, if submitted alongside the test results, would earn Gordon an invitation to a selection week.
He had no real plans and sitting the tests had more been something to do to pass the time until Virgil was back.  The military was Scott’s thing, not his, but Green had been animated and engaging in his description of the submarine service giving Gordon much food for thought.  The picture he painted of service life was very different to the stories Scott brought home.  Perhaps it was because WASP was a peacekeeping entity rather the aggressive environment of Scott’s fighter unit or perhaps it was the idea of exploring the oceans that appealed but something made him keep the forms.
Gordon shoved the whole idea to the back of his mind, burying it as deep as the paperwork that was hidden at the bottom of his kit bag.
xoxoxox
By the time Gordon made it back to the apartment Virgil was there to let him in.
“Good swim?”  A mug of the ever-present coffee was placed in front of him before Virgil returned to the kitchen.  Gordon picked up the mug and wandered over, leaning against the door frame to watch as his brother made a start on lunch.
“Pool was shut.  Should be ok tomorrow though.”
“Shut?  You found something else to do, right?”  Virgil looked up from where he was buttering a stack of bread for sandwiches, feeling a gnawing guilt at his little brother being left alone in a strange city.  The concern was clearly evident in his voice.
“It was fine.  Even without a pool I’m perfectly capable of looking after myself for a few hours.”
“I know you are.  Do you want tomatoes in with your ham?  Or I’ve got mustard if you prefer.”
“Tomatoes please.  You got any cheese?”
“Sure just grab the block out the fridge for me and I’ll add some in.”
The pair manoeuvred round each other in the small space, passing ingredients back and forth until a sizeable stack of sandwiches had been created.  They carried them over to the table and settled down to eat.
“I’ve rearranged my lab slots so I don’t have to go back to campus for a few days” Virgil mumbled around a mouthful of bread.  “I’ll still have to fit in some work here but it means you won’t be on your own so much.”
“You didn’t have to do that.  I don’t need babysitting.”
“I didn’t do it because I think you need babysitting,  I did it so we can actually spend some time together.  Maybe watch some movies.  You know, catch up a bit.”
Gordon looked for signs of an ulterior motive but instead saw only genuine honesty in Virgil’s expression.  Now it was his turn to feel guilty for second guessing his brother’s intentions.  Since when had he got so suspicious of everything?  Probably since he found out this trip was yet another attempt by his father to mould him into the narrow ideals of what a good son should look like.
“Sorry.  I guess I’m still a bit on edge.  Even half a continent away I still feel like Dad is watching and keeping an eye on me.”
Virgil swallowed his mouthful, all too aware that Jeff was rather more than half a continent away.  At that very moment he knew their father was somewhere in the South Pacific making sure the island that had been chosen as the future family home was just right before completing the purchase.
“So, this afternoon?”
“Films sound good, just none of that art house stuff.”  After his soaking he didn’t fancy heading out anywhere again that day but he also wasn’t in the mood for some high-brow foreign language film or any of Virgil’s other niche preferences.  “You sure you don’t need to do any more work today.”
“Maybe just half an hour or so to transfer my notes from the lab but I can always do that later.”
“How about you get that done while I clean up from lunch and fix us some snacks for the film.  I think I spotted some corn kernels when I was looking for the salt earlier.  Can’t have a film without popcorn.”
“If you’re sure?  Kernels are in the top cupboard.  I don’t have a popcorn maker here so you’ll have to use the stove, are you ok with that?”
Gordon’s only response was to roll his eyes; of course he would be fine making popcorn on the stove.  He started to clear the plates.
Virgil, free of chores, headed over to his desk.  He rummaged through his bag and dug out the smart moleskin notebook that he liked to use for rough notes, he found it easier to doodle down sketches on paper than on his tablet.  Soon he was completely engrossed in transposing figures and observations into his main files and cross referencing against the work he had done previously.
He was snapped back to the present by the arrival of Gordon on his elbow with a cup of coffee.  Once he was in the zone he could completely lose track of his surroundings, he had almost forgotten his brother was even there.
“We can save the films until tomorrow if you want to carry on.”
“No, it’s fine.  Just give me a couple more minutes, I’m nearly done.”
Gordon picked up a file that was half covering a coaster to make space for the mug.  One or two loose pages slipped free and made a bid for freedom.  He carefully put down coffee then dived under the desk to retrieve the pages.
“Oh, sorry”, he took a look at the pages as he straightened up.  “I didn’t realise your project was in aviation.  That thing doesn’t look like it should be able to fly though, it’s like a bumble bee with those stupid stubby wings.”
Virgil flustered slightly and snatched the pages out of Gordon’s hand with a little more force than was strictly necessary, hurriedly stuffing them back in the folder before shutting the whole bundle away in a drawer.
“Um, it’s not.  I mean, that’s not my project.  That’s just something I’m working on for, um, after.  Please, I’d uh, appreciate it if you didn’t tell Dad what you’ve seen.”
Gordon quirked an eyebrow in surprise.  Whatever Virgil was working on it looked like their dad was unlikely to approve, or at least that’s how it came across from Virgil’s reaction.  The last time he had seen Virgil acting so guilty was when he tried to deny eating Scott’s Easter chocolate while still having the remnants smeared as evidence across his face.
“Chill, Dad and I don’t exactly have a ‘chats over dinner’ type relationship.  So what’s the big deal?  I thought I was the only one not toeing the parental line about future plans.  Is he pressuring you to go into the Air Force like him and Scott?”
“It’s nothing like that.  And anyway, I’m a pacifist, remember?  I think Dad knows me better than to suggest the military of all things”
“Well at least he knows what one of us likes.  So, is this some PhD topic you’re thinking of?  Cos if it’s to do with planes I’m sure Dad will be fine with it.  Unless you’re thinking of setting up solo as a competitor to Tracy Aviation, now that would make him pissed.”
“Look, can you just drop it, please?”
Gordon was slightly taken aback by the abruptness, it normally took a lot to get their gentle giant riled up.  It was almost impossible to have a fight with Virgil because it just wasn’t in his nature to be argumentative.  That wasn’t to say that Virgil didn’t have strong opinions, it was just that he was normally so uncontroversial that it was hard to disagree with him.  Perhaps he wasn’t the only one feeling the pressure to conform with their father’s ideals.
“I’m sorry.  I promise I won’t tell Dad but, whatever it is you’re working on, don’t let him put you off.  I’ll understand if you don’t want to talk about it but don’t let him dictate your life.  No point both of us being miserable.”
“Yeah, maybe.”
Virgil felt guilty leaving Gordon with the wrong impression but it was easier to let him believe that Jeff disapproved of his future plans than try and explain away what was really on the cards.  He made a mental note to take better care of the notes he had made.  Of course it would all be much easier if the whole family knew what was going on but Jeff had been adamant; no sharing anything with anyone he hadn’t personally brought into the scheme, and that included younger brothers.
By mutual consent the brothers treated the future as a banned topic of conversation and by the time Gordon was due to return to Los Angeles he was in a much calmer frame of mind.  A few days without the burden of responsibilities or parental scrutiny had soothed his soul and left him feeling lighter and more relaxed than he had for a long time.
Unfortunately all good things had to come to an end; he couldn’t hide out in Denver forever, tempting as it may be.  As the plane headed back west Gordon found his mood sinking like the setting sun he was heading towards.

I was pretty stupid at twelve. Might get into the causes for that later, but long story short I got into self harming. Yeah, that wasn’t glorious. I never really planned on actually doing this, but I’ve come to realise a few people I know close to me have been having the same issues lately. And I can’t lie, it’s been pretty triggering for me getting into the details of why, how and when every time someone reaches out to me for help. So I figured why not just write about it. I guess here’s how I got out of it, and what keeps me going. Because I feel like no matter the what caused it to occur, self harming never is the only thing you’ve got left. Welcome to one of many unwritten therapy sessions.
Part one- please listen to me
I think, looking back, that one of the main reasons I got into self harming was I didn’t feel listened to. Or “left out”, as I would call it. I could’ve had dozens of friends around (which I did not anyway lol), I would’ve always felt alone. Well not alone, but lonely. And I remember even back then wishing so hard to have someone close to me, someone so persistent they would’ve gotten through the walls I was (subconsciously) building around myself. Having no one, or at least feeling like you don’t, can quickly become the start of an even deeper downfall. And that’s exactly what happened with me, but once again I am not getting into the details of this now.
So how do you make someone struggling with self harming actually FEEL like you’re there? I’d say first off, be available and let them know you are. But don’t insist on it, else it just feels like you’re trying to get them to tell you something. It starts with nothing, really. Even just sitting with them for a minute and asking about their day helps. Or just sit in silence with them if they let you, feeling someone’s presence can be extra comforting sometimes. Or watch with them that one show they like so much. Show them that you care always. Don’t be too intrusive, leaving the person their own space is key, but let them know you’re free for them whenever they need. No matter how hard you want to help someone that might be struggling, do not ever push them to talk about things they want to keep a secret. As long as you let them know you’re here and not going, you’re becoming sort of a safe space to them. And you do not always want to talk when in a safe space. So don’t ask questions, but listen instead. If they want to talk to you and feel safe enough with you they will. It never really is a one way thing though. Put some trust in them as well. Confide in them, even on the most little stuff. Inevitably that makes them feel somewhat valued, which is crucial when it comes to helping them trust you. Most importantly, it’s so incredibly hard becoming part of someone’s safe space without forcing yourself in. It takes so much time, gentleness and patience. Don’t blame yourself if they don’t talk to you right away. Some people can build the highest walls around themselves without even trying which can even make you feel rejected, but trust me there always is a way in if you’re patient enough. Always. Listen. Even silence can mean a lot if you listen hard enough.
Part two- alternatives?
One of the main things that helped me cope with self harming whenever I felt like doing it was finding alternatives for it. You can probably find a bunch online if you look them up, but for me what worked the most was writing. Well it was journaling really, but I’ve always hated the whole concept of a diary so I refuse to call it that. I used to have this old yellow copybook by my bedside I would grab pretty much every night, whenever I felt the urge to cut. And from there I’d just start writing about my day or whatever it was I had on my mind. Sometimes I’d copy quotes I liked (mainly from Grey’s are we surprised), sometimes I’d even just doodle. Whatever it was that kept my mind off cutting for a while. I think in a way I felt like writing about my own problems made them a little bit less heavy, and more real if that makes sense. On some days that would be enough to make the urge pass.
Music was also a great therapy for me. I’d literally sneak my old mp3 in bed and blast sad songs in my earphones at 2am. Sometimes I’d get so caught up I’d even get up and cry dance out to whatever it was I was playing. I used to do that until passing out of exhaustion most of the time and I actually loved it, it was such a great way to evacuate.
“Replacing the harm” was something I used to do as well to keep me from cutting. That was basically just replacing the harm caused by cutting by something that was technically a bit better. Still harmful but better. And for that most of the time I’d either do sports, eg running really hard until the sole of my feet was aching, or I’d just use the elastic method. That just consisted in keeping an elastic around my wrist at all times, most often a hair tie, and snapping it on my wrist or arm whenever I felt the need to take something out on myself. That worked wonders especially because it was so discreet I could use it whenever I felt the need to at any time of the day, which would always take a considerable amount off the buildup that would make me cut at night.
The butterfly method was also something I used on a few occasions. That just consisted in drawing butterflies on your arms (or wherever else it is you usually harm yourself) so that when you felt like cutting you’d see them and would be kept from doing it, because you’d metaphorically be cutting their wings off and killing them if you were to actually were to cut. I didn’t use that one often but it did help a few times. I found it also worked with writing names of people I loved (real of fictional), and basically any other doodle of an animal.
Once again though, these alternatives are only what worked for me and what I used the most when I was into self harming, most of them I still use even now as they’ve just stuck with me. But they’re far from being the only valid ones existing.
Part three- NEVER say don’t
That one is about to be very short, but do not ever tell a person who self harms not to self harm. It’s plain stupid, won’t make them stop and they probably already know it isn’t good for them. It’s also invalidating as hell and will only make them feel worse if they’re anything like me. Instead you can try and show understanding. I remember once a girl online told me something like “I won’t tell you to stop cutting because I know you won’t, but please make sure you at least clean up your wounds properly and get stitches if necessary”. And that honestly meant so much more than anyone could ever imagine. I didn’t feel blocked of forced to stop but accompanied and understood, which itself helped me a lot and if I’m being honest it was so unexpected her words have stuck to me to this day.
Part four- stop counting clean days
When self harming, I found a lot of people tend to count their clean days (dc’s) as a way to encourage themselves to recover (clean days being days during which you don’t self harm). I did it as well, that for a very long time. It only makes you feel like pure shit when you relapse. Because inevitably there ARE relapse days during recovery, which is something practically no one talks about. You don’t just snap out of it you know? Every time I’d relapse I’d just look at my previous clean days count and think to myself the most horrible stuff. Let’s say I had just broke off a 12dc’s, I wouldn’t sit there and be proud of myself for lasting so long, instead I’d just tell myself “Wow see? You went so far up for nothing. You’ll never recover so why bother trying anyway” and that itself would trigger a urge to go even harder on myself. The moment you stop counting clean days is the moment you allow yourself to heal, slowly but surely, even if you can trip a little down the road there.
Part five- people you relate to
One last thing I can think of that helped me with self harming was finding people I was seeing myself in, somehow. I’m thinking personally of Amelia from Grey’s Anatomy/Private Practice who had a drug problem, and mostly a YouTuber called Johanna Cadence. Ana used to make videos on YouTube mainly talking about her own depression, suicide attempt(s) and self harming issues. Sometimes they were just videos of her rambling, sometimes they were art videos, sometimes poetry readings. Whatever it was she put out, even song covers, would comfort me. We basically grew up together. She was always so different from me yet we were similar in a lot of ways, and I always admired her so much for that. By the time I started watching her her channel was called Howsenselessdeath Howpreciouslife, but she’s renamed it to Universal Hobo since then I believe. Most of her early videos are still up if you scroll far enough.
My point with this is, find yourself people who make you feel like you belong. They don’t have to be Amelia from Grey’s or Ana from YouTube, there are plenty of people out there, but finding yourself someone that represents to you what those people were to me undeniably helps, in a huge way.

The Beginning of the Adventures of Frankie and Sage
My therapist told me when I was sixteen that I needed to find a way to “vent” my feelings into constructive energy. Catharsis, he called it. He suggested drawing. The next therapy session I brought in a folder of the same doodle with different colors; a cartoon tyrannosaurus rex, attempting to play a trombone with its tiny arms.
“Your troubles are apparent in what you’re portraying in these. You feel frustrated like the T’rex, because you’ve been given a myriad of what seems impossible tasks.”
“Bullshit.” Then I left. Seventy dollars an hour for complete bullshit. I didn’t go back, but I did take up running. Maybe his advice wasn’t as useless as it seemed. Every time I felt like lashing out,  I started running around our two block street, and sometimes didn’t stop until I was completely exhausted.
That’s where I was now, nine years later, still running. Now it was less an escape and just pure habit. The sweat beaded along my brow, and dripped down my neck. I’d lost track of how long I’d been running, but I was in touch with my body. There was no burning in my legs, a deep ache in my stomach, a taste of dried spit in my mouth, and steady breathing. I could’ve kept going another lap, but the pain in my stomach, caused by my own stupidity of not eating breakfast, was demanding too much attention.
I turned onto Sweets Avenue, and sprinted down the cracked side-walk, extending my stride, and pumping my arms. I closed my eyes and imagined a thick rope  between me and my childhood house. Every time I threw my hand forward I grabbed onto the rough twine and pulled back. My legs were no longer the driving force carrying me to my destination. I drew in a deep breath, lungs burning, heart pumping over time, and took the final steps of my morning jog.
Everything came to a stop. My body hit an invisible wall. I coughed a bit and rested my hands on my knees to stay propped up. Dry heaving wracked my stomach and throat. Then the dizziness hit. I knew I should’ve cooled down properly and walked, or stretched, or something, but I as soon as my stomach decided to reject that morning’s activity I gave literally zero fucks.
I walked into the house. Normally it was well lit and radiating warmth from the kitchen. This morning, as I walked down the narrow hallway, wood flooring creaking with each step, there was an unusual amount of quiet in the Donamaria household. I pegged it on my brother’s bachelor party last night. Although my parents didn’t join us at the “gentleman’s” club, they still stayed up later than usual to make sure my brother, all of his friends, and I got home safely. Anthony was surely sleeping off a hangover, along with the rest of his buddies. I was the designated driver.
I couldn’t let last night’s activities stop me from my morning routine. I made a sharp left, entered the mudroom, and kicked off my worn running shoes. I took off my ball cap and hung it on the wall. Sweaty hair held up by the hat fell into my eyes. I quickly ran my hand back through the mess and pushed the locks back somewhat in place. By feeling alone I was able to tell how in need of a hair cut I really was, and after a quick glance in the mirror I realized chestnut brown roots sneaking through the platinum blonde. On a good day my hair was cut closely to the sides, flopping neatly over the top in a quiff shape.
I could get it done before the wedding.
“Which is..” I mumbled to myself, pulling out my phone to check the date. “In two days.” Yeah, I could get it done. Grabbing a granola bar from the pantry and a water bottle from the frig, I padded up the steps as quietly as possible. I crammed as much of the chewy granola  into my mouth as humanly possible and chomped, washing it down with the contents of the plastic bottle. I took a detour from my bedroom to the restroom, opting for a shower. I adjusted the temperature handles  to my liking and pulled up the plug on the bath faucet to redirect the water to the shower head.  peeled off my sweaty clothes, and stepped under the stream of water that felt cool on my overly heated skin. I closed my eyes and faced toward the water.
I let the events of last night take hold of my thoughts again. The nightclub atmosphere; loud dance music, the smell of sweat and alcohol, careless laughs of the those losing all inhibitions, scantily clad, beautiful women dancing on poles and on other women, gripping their assets. I shivered as  my abdomen heated up.
“Have a little fun, Frankie!” Anthony’s best man, Damien said, hanging his arm around my shoulder. It was a bit of an exaggeration to call it “saying”. Damien yelled, mixed with slurred, over the speakers. I wrinkled my nose at the scent of alcohol on his breath.
“I’m having plenty fun.” I replied, sardonically. “Good, good fun.” Despite his drunken state he remained unconvinced. Less than five minutes later, after Damien had to “drain the vein”, I was being pulled into a secluded room by one of the only fully dressed workers in the place. She closed the door behind me, and not knowing what else to do, I sat in the chair in the middle of the room. The walls were painted black, but there were bright lights shaded pink lining the trim. The shade reminded me vaguely of my himalayan salt lamp back at my apartment in Clifton.
I wished I was there. As I thought about my comfortable bed and cuddling with my border collie, lab mix, Benny, the door behind me opened. The first thing that caught my attention was a gentle wave of long, amber hair that fell down to the middle to a distinctly feminine curve of her spine. I don’t know why I always looked at hair first. Symbolically long, loose hair such as hers was associated with virginity, innocence even, Something told me that was not the case here. She closed the door behind her, and  stalked closer to me.
Next, I took into account her shorter stature and willowy frame. Tanned skin, supple breasts, defined collar bones, accentuated muscles- everything about her screamed sensuality. Her bare leg slipped in between my thighs. I felt her eyes glazing over me, but I didn’t want to make eye contact. I didn’t want to accept I was really letting this happen. She smoothly transitioned into a full straddle across my lap, and gently traced her hands over my chest and onto my shoulders to rest. Her soft touch gave me incredible chills. Her hips began to move and as did her mouth along the crook of my neck. My sweet spot. I couldn’t help it. I melted into it. I let myself go.
“Not quite used to doing this for a lady.” The sultry voice was unforgettable. The words stung my ears and pulled my back and away from reality at the same time. I was no longer in a strip club sitting under a drop dead gorgeous woman, but sitting in Mr. Montgomery’s biology classroom, petrified and on the verge of a breakdown because of one person.
I plucked up the courage to look at my seducer’s face. Striking green eyes stared back at me. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t move. Then after the shock faded the realization hit me; Sage Watson, the mythic bitch that made my life fucking hell for six years was giving me a mother fucking lap dance.
I quickly pushed her off, and stood. I wasn’t enough of an asshole to just leave her there so I helped her up.
“Hey, Miss. What’s the deal? Did I do some-”
I ran out of the room as fast as I could and spent the rest of the night in the car with the heat up all the way, listening to NPR, as I waited for the rest of my party to leave.
I still couldn’t fucking believe it. I had the opportunity to make her pay for everything she had done, but I didn’t. As I rinsed the apple scented soap from my hair I talked to myself like I was still there, talking to her.
“Serves you right to become a stripper. That’s what you get for cheating on your chemistry final. Fucking hell, Frankie, who the fuck would ever actually say that?”
Exasperated, angry, and horny, I masturbated to that one hot chick off of Game Of Thrones, and then sat down under the falling water. I pulled my knees to my undersized breasts and rested my forehead in between them, my thoughts spinning out of control wildly. Why did I she have to come back into my life now when I had come so far?
