Horizon Zero Dawn spoilers but I don't think I can ever really be over Zero Dawn as a project and the truth behind Operation Enduring Victory and just everything it amounted to.
Like at the end of the fucking world, a year and change left to live, and a group of people dedicated that time to making sure Earth could have some manner of future. That even though everyone still alive had to suffer for one company's greed and stupidity there could still be something *someday*. It's such a testament to the part of humanity that wishes the best for its successors even if they can't ever gain from that 'best'. But on the flipside the secrecy that Zero Dawn had to exist under because they knew that no one wants to fight a hopeless war, not to mention the fact that people that worked on Zero Dawn were promised time with their families before everything really ended, it's sad but I have to argue that *surely* some people knew. Even if they didn't want to believe it or think about it had to see what they were up against or engage in one battle and realize just what was happening, and still have to have hoped there was something they had planned. And how Zero Dawn worked, technically. It gave humanity a new chance. Even if it's not all they intended, there are plants and animals and people and they're really living. They have such a rich culture so separate and so entangled with the old world and even if it's 'wrong' I know those that fought for Enduring Victory and worked on Zero Dawn would be glad something good came from all that effort.
And the cradle facility you visit kills me. Apollo failed and they couldn't enter and they could never *learn*, they could never grow past those lessons meant for children, and the servitors couldn't learn to treat them like adults because they were still children. They grew without ever learning anything new and they couldn't even know *why* because they were never taught how to handle that grief and the servitors saw them as kids you can't tell that kind of thing to. You can't tell them that they're the children of a lost species that's been dead for centuries but loved them so so much they lived and died for them to exist. And they were let out into the world with nothing! Their first time seeing the sun and yet it was cold and they were hungry. Everything was new and terrifying and they had to be so angry but they still lived and they did it. They made something new. They struggled and survived. Like, fuck, man. It's so heavy.

Horizon Zero Dawn + Horizon Forbidden West spoilers below!
.

.
Replaying HZD and having a lot of feelings about the main storyline. Specifically how Elisabet sacrificed her life earlier than necessary in order to save her team and the work that would ensure a future for humanity. How, after what we know from HFW, Ted Faro did precisely the opposite by trying to extend his life in order to “welcome” the new generation. After he purged APOLLO and killed the Alphas for the reasoning that the new humans shouldn’t know anything about the past?? Yet, he was an exception to that. He wanted to be the only one with authority on the world’s history, even though he was responsible for humanity’s extinction in the first place… so yeah, just the juxtaposition of Elisabet’s and Ted’s lives/deaths is making me feel things. Curse you, Guerrilla Games (affectionate)

I've not seen anything on this yet so I'm gonna do it myself. HORIZON AND MYTHOLOGICAL SYMBOLISM
We can assume for the purposes of this metaphor that the Chariot line is a separate entity from FAS. The Horus, AKA Metal Devil. Named after the Egyptian god of Kings and the Sky.
The Khopesh, aka the Deathbringer, an Egyptian sword.
The Scarab, AKA Corruptor. Named after a common symbol in Egyptian mythology (from my limited and narrow understanding)
And Ted Faro. A man whose last name is a synonym of Pharoah, an ancient ruler.
The Pharoah asked Horus, God of kings, to serve him. Horus agrees for a time, granting a legion. But in his greed, Pharaoh overstepped and in Hubris saw himself as a god. Horus became angry and turned the legion against everyone, intent to raze humanity to the ground. Aware of this failure, Pharoah sought out Sobek(aka Elisabet), the god of fertility, and protection, to ask for help. Sobek told the Pharoah that there was no stopping the wrath of Horus. But with the Pharoah's riches as a sacrifice, the God of fertility would renew the land and bring back what was lost. Pharoah accepted, knowing there was no other option. Humanity was erased, but Sobek created a new God to aid in renewing the world.
Gaia. The mother of earth. Guardian of life.
Ted Faro saw himself as a god, and his Hubris led to mankind's fall. But Elisabet Sobeck? She could stand against the wrath of a corrupt army and see a solution. She made Gaia to outlast the rage of the Faro Plague.
And thus one God was made to kneel to another.

Ao3 Fanfics
With the encouragement of a few friends, I have decided to start posting here on Tumblr my Ao3 Horizon fandom stories that I write. I'm fairly new to these parts, so please let me know if you see any way I can improve how I put these up. I also would love to hear from you guys so feel free to send me any Asks or messages!
My Works
Stories in Progress:
Road to Mainspring - Aloy/Erend In the weeks after the Battle of the Alight, Aloy is recruited to escort Dervahl to Mainspring with Erend Vanguardsman - a journey neither of them expected to go the way it did. Set after Zero Dawn, before Forbidden West. Rating: Mature/Explicit (for eventual smut)
Blood and Sandstone - Aloy AU re: Carja Red Raids An alternate narrative following the 'what if' of Aloy being kidnapped during the Red Raids for the Sun Ring instead of living her life peacefully in the Embrace, and what her life might've been like during that time. Features: Ersa, Erend (eventual Ereloy), Rost, Helis, Avad, Jiran and so many others... Rating: Mature/Explicit (for dark themes, violence, eventual smut)
Echoes of Enduring Hearts - Aloy/Avad Aloy and Avad navigate a complicated relationship before and after the events of Horizon: Forbidden West. Rating: Teen and Up (for now, who knows, will update if it changes)
Completed Stories and One-Shots:
A Breath of Fresh Air - Aloy/Kotallo (maybe completed, tbd) Set just before heading to the mission to the GEMINI cauldron. Kotallo notices Aloy getting antsy being cooped up in the base as they wait for Beta to prepare herself for the merge and finish the 'rig', so he invites her for an outdoor excursion. Rating: Teen and Up
Embers of the Past - Aloy/Erend Prompt for two minutes Oseramtober 2023 - "Ember" Aloy takes a friend's advice for some downtime and ends up coming face to face with a messy part of her and Erend's past. Will they be able to finally move past it or will it burn everything they'd built to embers and ash? Rating: Teen and Up

Some Thoughts on Ted Far’s ultimate fate
Obviously contains spoilers for Forbidden West, as well as Zero Dawn
Kinda dark, considering the nature of his canonical fate and all that.
Anyway, I found his fate in HFW to be very telling, very fascinating, and also very horrifying in many ways.
He really did go all-out on the pharaoh aesthetic for his bunker(/tomb) from the imagery around it to the treatment of the people he kept with him.
He treated them, it seems, somewhere between servants meant to ensure his comfort and pets to keep him company in the afterlife his bunker.  Right down to having a kill-switch put in them all that he referred to as “putting them to sleep” the way you’d talk about a pet that was no longer suitable for life???  Horrifying.
Really helped hammer home that even before Elisabet sacrificed herself he’d already lost it (if he ever had it).  He really did see himself as above everybody else, and with the whole pharaoh-esque theming for his bunker-tomb, it really sort of implied he already saw himself maybe as a sort of god among men, in a sense.
I mean his attitude waaaay back from HZD we saw he was way too full of himself, way too self-assured without cause for it, way too convinced his own ideas were for the best and that nothing could go wrong with them so it wasn’t exactly surprising, it was more shocking the lengths he went to in his...  Delusion, I suppose, that he was truly so superior and that he knew best.
And once Elisabet died...  He just fell way further into that, embracing the idea of immortality and the feeling that he could be a benevolent god-like figure to the people who would populate the world due to her efforts.  That was pretty fucked up.  The plans were obviously there from the start, but once she died there was no chance he’d ever be convinced to abandon them.
But what really fucks me up the most, is that he was clearly not human anymore in the end--but we don’t see it, nor do we know how long he was still “in” there, so to speak.  How long was he like that?
How long was he alert and aware and unable to communicate (not that there was anyone to communicate with) or do anything to extricate himself, trapped within his own body and bunker alike in a sort of hell of his own making before his mind, his self, was gone?  Eaten away by the changes to his body, when did it finally remove his ability for higher thought?
What were the extent of the alterations to his body?  He didn’t sound human with what we could hear before he was destroyed, so I imagine he was warped into something well beyond any kind of mutation humanity has ever seen arise in reality, transformed into something that’s actually some sort of body horror nightmare fuel.
If so, did he know it was happening?  Was he aware of it, trapped within himself, feeling his humanity and his self fading away, consumed by the unstable mutations warping his body into a cursed form?  How long was he like that?
Did he retain a sense of self for long?  Was it so gradual that he didn’t even notice as his humanity slipped away and it was gone, he was gone, without his ever realizing it?
Or did he spend decades, centuries maybe, aware that he was changing into something that could never do what he dreamed--becoming a nightmare incarnate rather than the immortal god he saw himself as--before the mercy of finally losing himself?
Trapped within a hell of his own making, forced to endure it as his body warped and twisted beyond human recognition into something repulsive and unholy instead...  Did he have time to reflect on what he’d done, how he’d brought it on himself?
Did he ever, for even a moment, truly regret anything for the destruction it had brought upon others and not for the misfortune it brought upon himself?  Was his fate something that finally broke through to him and forced him to reflect and to realize how badly he’d fucked up?
(Somehow, I don’t think he did)
I don’t really know what sort of fate I had hoped for him--dying alone in his bunker maybe, or somehow maybe being in cryostasis/immortal so we could kill him ourselves...
But, somehow...
Somehow I think that his ultimate fate--twisted into a monster on the outside to match the one within, killed when he was no longer of use and his existence would prove troublesome to another, regardless of how long he retained any sense of self as he was mutated into a living horror--was fitting.
Even if it left me with many questions to which I don’t think we’ll ever have the answers.

Something that just occurred to me, and maybe I’m a little dense for not seeing it sooner but it got me very excited!
One thing that I’ve found quirky about the Horizon games is the visual representation of machines/tech being taken over by the sort of weird organic cables growing around them—in blue if it’s by Aloy, red if it’s by the corruption, etc.
HOWEVER
Aloy’s ability to do this comes from a modified version of the Corruptors’ ability. This in turn is granted by HADES, one of GAIA’s subfunctions. HEPHAESTUS, another of GAIA’s subfunctions, is also able to do this (in purple this time). And as we see from the Heart of the Nora cutscene in HZD, in GAIA’s message to Elisabet, HADES seems to develop this cable-y form after the activation signal (and then grants this to the other subfunctions). And the activation signal comes from Nemesis, which we find out at the end of HFW is some kind of swarming, pulsing weirdness that is carrying the result of a horrific digital mind-merge of the Far Zenith colonists.
So, what if the funky coloured cables aren’t just some goofy pseudo-organic representation of hacking to make machine takeover look a little more visceral and interesting, but actually a hint towards the sort of physical form Nemesis takes—a hint that’s been in place since the very first game? A form that it injected in some way into the subfunctions as part of releasing them, a sort of nano-machinery manifestation which gives them power to take over other systems?
If so, game three may feature a return of the Corrupted/Daemonic machine mechanic in its final form—the Nemesis machine—and it would make perfect sense because that’s literally what Nemesis looks like in its physical manifestation: a swarm of horrible writhing cable tentacles.
Which would mean that Aloy’s been using a variation on Nemesis tech from the very start without knowing it—but as soon as she and Sylens figure that out (if Sylens hasn’t done so already, that cagey motherfucker), it could give them an easily-accessible way of trying to research potential weaknesses.
