🔥 on aph ASEAN?
Philippines:  I'm kind of glad that the Philippines turned out to be a guy in canon I know people were upset because a lot of fanon interpretations saw him as being a girl but, idk how to explain it without sounding insane or self hating LMAO but I feel like the Philippines being a guy makes seeing ships like Spain x Philippines and America x Philippines less uhh gross to look at. I mean I definitely don't ship those ships but its leaves a grosser taste in my mouth when I see Spain x woman Philippines for example, purely because we uhh all know what the Spaniards did to the women here lol.
I'm not saying that someones a bad person if they ship those ships I mean at the end of the day it's all fictional and people can do what they want, it's no biggie, I just think a lot of people in the hetalia fandom still don't have the ability to be nuanced about ships between countries with complicated histories. I have yet to see a well done analysis on how Spain x Philippines or America x Philippines would realistically work outside of people shipping it purely because it's a coloniser x colonised ship. I'm sure that a hetalia fan who is informed and can give a nuanced take can probably make me tolerate those ships but for now, no not really. . So if Philippines was a girl I feel like a lot of Spain x Philippines content or America x Philippines content would be a lot more disgusting and f3tishistic because Filipinas are already f3tishised.
Also when it's coloniser x colonised and the only reason why those two countries know each other is because one of them sailed across the world to invade the other one unprovoked, it's different from two nations who are neighbours and who war with each other if that makes sense. I think it would be different if Spain and the Philippines were like, neighbours who've fought each other for centuries and who subjugated each other and maybe I'd even like it if that was so, but it's just not the case (this is all coming from a Filipino)
Malaysia: LOL HE'S A SIMP FOR SINGAPORE (same). But honestly I kind of get it like why did Singapore say that Iceland of all people is his fave like what. Hima why are you trying to shoehorn in random Europeans LMAO
Indonesia: I love him but I wish in the manga he was portrayed a bit more like a Chad lol maybe it's because I'm used to the fanon interpretation of him
Singapore: I don't have strong feelings about him and I like his design but again uhh why is Iceland is fave bro💀 again it just seems like Hima trying to shoehorn in random European nations like shhh Iceland has had his turn being venerated by the fandom let the Asians have their go..
Thailand: No strong feelings about him I love him
Vietnam: Strong feelings about her but none of them are negative I LOVE HER XADKJS I just wish Hima would release a chapter of her just beating up America tho <3
Brunei, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar I don't have unpopular opinions on really because I don't enough about their characters or how the fandom perceives them
Thank you for the ask :D

HWS ASEAN and the Doctrine of Non-interference: Headcanons
Rereading the SEA chapters in relation to the readings I had for one of my ASEAN classes, I can appreciate how Himaruya portrays the "ASEAN Way." The ASEAN Way encompasses ASEAN's guiding principles and norms, including non-confrontation, informality, flexibility, and non-interference. Non-interference means that ASEAN member states refrain from interfering in each other's internal affairs, which is why ASEAN cooperation primarily focuses on economic development, cultural exchange, and regional security.
Now imagine the lengths each SEA country would go to in their commitment to non-interference:
Piri suddenly breaking into a surprisingly baritone rendition of "My Way" when asked about another country's internal affairs. Thailand joins in, showcasing his unique dance moves
Vietnam breathes a sigh of relief when she sees Indonesia's eyebrows furrow, thinking he's going to intervene, but gasps loudly when Indonesia brings out an angklung instead
Malaysia declares a competition with Singapore to create the most creative routine to the song, so Singapore reveals an impromptu flash mob performance with perfectly synchronized choreography????
Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos forming a trio known as the "Non-Interference Enforcers"
Indonesia inventing a "Non-Interference Alarm Clock" that emits a loud siren whenever an SEA country is on the verge of interfering in another's business
Cambodia pranking Brunei and Myanmar by organizing a "Non-Interference Treasure Hunt” and setting up fake treasure maps and sending the two characters on a wild goose chase
Laos holding a "Quietest Concert" where everyone tries to keep a neutral face on while they take turns doing something weird
Piri initiating karaoke nights in which each country gets to sing a song of their choice without any interruptions or comments from the others
Meanwhile East Timor’s confused by their antics and the rest are just like, “You’ll understand when you’re older”

Myanmar Hetalia OC
design explanations under the cut :p
I am Burmese myself so all of this is influenced mostly by my own experience and by family and friends around me :)
The Irrawaddy River scar is more of a birthmark I just forgot the word for it. My mom would constantly tell me that when she was little the Irrawaddy River was clear and full of little green and blue stones and the elders tell me that you could scoop a bunch of them in a jar and most of them would be turn out to be precious stones. That’s where the inspo for the eyes came from cuz in my mind, because of these stories (and the numerous amounts of jade and amber jewelry I get sent every year), Myanmar will always seem like a very rich land with a foundation of gold to me. If you were on hetalia deviantart in the early 2010s you probably know what the long hair with headband version is inspired by -w- the overall design tho is just the most common looking Burmese guy I know lol
btw THIS is the daguerreotype of a Burmese lady with a cigar I was inspired by!! Isn’t she so cool??!

I kinda wanna do personifications of the different states as well in the future. I am specifically from the Kachin state so I drew a quick draft of him at like 2am @w@
I’ve always had kind of a takin the piss out of it relationship with my culture and with the coup and civil war goin on over there right now it is a little difficult to feel any pride about it, worrying over if my family is alright over there. I’ll be honest this started out as a little thing I thought would be kinda silly to do but I found in the process that it was kinda. Therapeutic? Soothing?? I dunno. Gathering all my experiences and knowledge into making one personification made me remember all the good experiences I had being Burmese and made me appreciate it more funnily enough :)

The country formerly known as Burma… Myanmar (12/7/16 – 12/10/17)
Apologies, I know I am extremely behind in updating the blog but here goes.  Since we last left you, we were in Bangkok now we are traveling to Myanmar. If we thought we saw a lot of temples before, this place gave the other countries a run for their money.  Also, you’ll see from the pictures Justin had a serious monk obsession.  It was literally the only photobomb he didn’t mind because he was always trying to capture a candid of monks anyway.
Our first city in Myanmar was bustling Yangon, where we stayed at Chan Myaye Guest House.  The first day we ate this awesome place to try Shan Noodles, so DECLICIOUS, at 999 noodle shop.  Later in the day we went to Sule Pagoda and then to china town for the night market. There were definitely some unique foods there, i.e. things still moving, but don’t worry we didn’t eat those.  On the way back we got some great shots of the Pagoda at night, I love how places look at night… probably more than during the day.
The next day we went to Botahtaung temple, small but very cool with its maze-like gold corridors.  We kind of showed ourselves around but of course had no clue what some of the stuff was, so a seemingly nice monk took pity on us and called out some things.  We figured we would probably have to give him some money but I’m pretty sure he pegged us a target and went for it, annoying but it happens.  We did learn that the temples have areas around them for the days of the week.  You have to find the day you were born, Justin Tuesday and me Wednesday, then you pour 5 small cups of water over the Buddha for that day and 3 over the animal represented making a wish as you do so.  If you’re wondering Justin is a lion and I am an elephant.  After this we walked over to the Bogyoke Market, Justin wanted to look at some paintings and me some sapphires!  Last stop of the day was Shwe Dagon Pagoda, a huge gold pagoda with many small buildings on the complex.
Seeing much of what was in the city of Yangon we decided to venture outside the city hiring a driver to visit Golden Rock Pagoda, also known as Kaiktiyo Pagoda and Bago.  The Golden Rock is literally just that, a huge golden rock.  The rock looks as though it is balancing at the edge of a mountain.  This is considered the 3rd most important Buddhist pilgrimage in Myanmar, as it believed that a strand of Buddha’s hair is the only thing keeping the rock from toppling over.  Anyway, to get all of this in we had to start super early, 4am, to arrive at Golden Rock at about 7:30.  After arriving at the mountain we had to take a truck up another 45 minutes.  Not so bad right?  Well the benches in the back of the truck can really only seat 5 people comfortably but of course they pack 6 people on the benches. Rubbing elbows with the locals, or having them practically sit on you! The ride is more like a roller-coaster than a drive too, zipping around turns on a bumpy road, quite the adventure!  When we got to the top we lucked out because the sky was so blue the pictures came out fabulous. Now it was time to drive to Bago where we saw many temples including the snake monestary which has a 128-year-old Burmese python.  We also saw Shwe Maw Daw Pagoda, the Royal Audience Hall, and Shwe Tha Lyaung with a huge reclining Buddha.
It was a long day but so amazing to see such deep-rooted history represented in these temples, from the extremely ornate décor to the ancient statues all holding so much meaning and bring the culture to life.
Since we were taking a night bus to Mandalay we had the day to kill and after getting some up to date information from my friends at HW I couldn’t get the idea of buying sapphires out of my head.  For someone like me who loves jewelry I felt like I could get a good deal from a region that is known to have the best sapphires in the world.  Well I was right, I shocked many shops with my knowledge but ended up with a beautiful pair of earrings from Justin for Christmas!  I’m a lucky girl.  After that we took the Circle Train, a slow old train that goes around the edges of the city.  It was a great scenic view of Yangon, but at 3 hours was an hour too long for us.  After grabbing food it was time to get on the bus.  Now this bus was NICE, leather reclining seats and warm blankets made sleeping easy.  What did not make sleeping easy was the blasting music.  Justin slept through it but I had a harder time getting more and more annoyed, though i did get some sleep before we arrived in Mandalay at 5:30am.
