Hi there! I’m curious to know have there been a lot of celebrity sightings at the Merrily shows? Thank you for all you do with this wonderful account.
There have been a lot of celebrity sightings at the show, and also off-Broadway, but only a few photos of celebrities have been posted on the official Merrily social media accounts (Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sutton Foster). Unlike other productions, Merrily continues to sell out every show, meaning that they don’t need constant PR so they rarely promote who is at the show.
Recent guests have included Melissa McCarthy (who went backstage and met the cast), Al Yankovic, Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessie Ware, Jon Bass, Lucy Hale, and many Broadway actors and friends. A New York Post sightings column referenced (probably via the PR team) a range of actors who had been to the show early in the run (Maya Rudolph, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Paul Rudd and Hugh Jackman): https://jgroffdaily.tumblr.com/post/731387571451658240/also-this-one
During the Buzzfeed puppies interview, Jonathan mentioned that Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters, amongst others, saw the show off-Broadway.
Zachary Quinto was at the opening and came back a few weeks later with Sarah Paulson and Jessica Lange. Others at the opening included Anna Wintour, Cynthia Erivo, Lena Waithe, Raul Castillo (with Alexis Forte) and Gideon Glick.
Toby Onwumere saw the show with some friends, including Jonathan’s former partner, Tima Botwin.
There was a weekly summary posted on this account of celebrities seen at the show during the off-Broadway run.
Update: Whoopi Goldberg was at the show on 29 November and took photos with the cast. Rachel McAdams was also at the same matinee. Alan Menken and Hillary Clinton were at the 30 November show. David Fincher was at a recent show. Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey were at the 6 December evening show. Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells were at the 13 December matinee. Dave Bautista, Maude Apatow, Renee Rapp, Rachel Bloom, Jules Hough, Alan Mencken, Hillary Clinton. Brian J Smith, Harvey Guillen, Laura Linney, Karan Soni, Marcia Gay Harden. Paul Mescal, Michael Kors, Russell Tovey. Patti LuPone, Woody Harrelson, Betty Who. Glenn Close, Gayle Rankin.

Elisa Leal is looking for some joy in her life. Years of tragedy and struggle took their toll, and now she is searching for new connections to raise her spirits. When she discovers proof that her biological father is alive, she decides to find him and make contact. Her quest leads her to the small town of Bliss, Colorado, and the strangest man she's ever met—Mel Hughes. He believes in aliens and sasquatch conspiracies, but he's also kind of awesome. And there might be even more in Bliss to make her smile. Sylvan Dean and Hale Galloway have enjoyed wandering their way through life, always in motion. Always searching for the woman who could make their life complete. Living in Bliss made them realize it's time to settle down. Van's finally going to college and has a job lined up with his brother when he finishes. That job is in Dallas, and while Hale is happy for Van, he can't imagine leaving Bliss behind. It feels like everything is coming apart until they meet Elisa. She's the one they have been searching for, and she is worth the wait. The future looks bright until the guys' past comes back to haunt them. Danger lurks in every corner, but it may not be the biggest threat to their happily ever after. The citizens of Bliss know how to handle a killer, but handling Elisa, Van, and Hale might require some cosmic intervention.

Quick Q and A with Emma Swift
Quick Q and A with Emma Swift
I first discovered Emma Swift’s music at a Folk Alliance Conference in Kansas City a few years ago. Emma was accompanying legendary singer-songwriter, Robyn Hitchcock.  Their set was a memorable one, high atop the conference in a large penthouse with a comfortable stage.  I remember making acquaintances with some young musicians who were totally mesmerized by the performance. We ooohed and ahhhed…

Happy october hun I luv your blog!! 🖤🖤🖤 I'd love to hear your thoughts about the cast of a Repo! remake because the other day I was talking w/ a friend about it. It's a great movie I don't think it needs a remake, but there are so many remakes being made, if there was one at least it would be great to get more ppl into the fandom. (Also I think like you... hate TZ, love Repo!) Who would you cast? I have no ideas, except for Isabelle Fuhrman as Shilo, she has the look and was badass in Orphan!
Hello dear anon and a happy October to you too! I love autumn and am really happy the hot days are over for now ^^ Finally it’s time for cozy clothes and hot chocolate <3
And I’m very happy you enjoy my blog, thanks for letting me know!
Haha, your question is really great, I had so much fun thinking about it :D But you’re right, it was not quite easy … and took me longer than expected to actually answer, sorry about that.
I’m pretty sure some obvious choices evaded my mind, but yeah, I had fun imagining different actors and actresses in the roles of our beloved (and not so much xD) characters.
A lot of Hollywood names are down there … yes, that surprised me as well, but as you said, dear anon, it IS really hard to come up with something (good) ._. Especially when it comes to male singers/actors. I listen mostly to female artists and found it very very hard to think out of the box for the male roles *sigh* So sorry if this is more like boring than entertaining xD
Mh ... for shits and giggles, here’s an all female cast with ladies I love to listen to first :3 Because why not and I feel like it xD
Shilo: Ulli Perhonen (Snow White Blood)
Nathan: Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (Silent Hill)
Marni: Tarja Turunen
Blind Mag: Simone Simons (Epica)
Rotti: Jessica Lange (Because Fckit, she’s perfect xD)
Amber: Marina (Marina and the diamonds)
Pavi: Zora Cock (Blackbriar)
Luigi: Maria Brink (In this moment)
Graves: Lzzy Hale (Halestorm)
And now a list of several other artists I thought of.
Shilo: I’m toootally with you on Isabelle Fuhrman, she was so amazing in The Orphan! And it’s true she’s got that Shilo look :) Another one that came to mind was maybe Sophia Lillis, I loved her in It and on “I Am Not Okay With This”. She has such a great and expressive face, and just imagine all these “What the Fuck”-looks she could give us xD
Nathan: At first this was tricky, but then, once I thought of him, I wasn’t able to think of anyone else. Namely Hugh Jackman xD He’s got that ambivalence that makes the character of Nathan Wallace, he can be fearsome (think X-Men), but he’s also such a sweetheart and a great “Father” (Les Mis, Greatest Showman). And I think he’d totally rock this part. Oooh, just thinking how he would suffer during “Legal Assassin”, or portraying the transition Nathan -> Repo Man during “Night Surgeon” … I’m getting chills just thinking about it xD
Blind Mag/Marni Wallace: I’ve put them together because I couldn’t decide between Tarja Turunen (ex-Nightwish) and Simone Simons (Epica) for either. They are both very VERY capable singers (I guess most of you could know them?). And I would LOVE to see Simone in some of Mag’s costumes, because she is sooooo beautiful, but Tarja has that “Mag”-Vibe that would fit so well and yeaaah … I just don’t know ^^’ And since we know Marni was also a singer, it would fit either ^^ But I think I’d like Simone a little bit more …
Amber: Katharine Isabelle. That was the first one I thought of and she’s the only Amber I can imagine apart from Paris <3 As my followers know, I've loved every second of American Mary because of her, and I think she’d have a lot of fun playing that part.
Luigi: Bill Skarsgard. He’s got that interesting face while emitting some kind of charme and charisma, and think could really act out on the temper issues xD
Pavi: That was actually quite hard, and I’m not totally happy with the people I came up with. I think it would be funny to use someone who’s naturally good-looking like Zac Efron or Matt Bomer, but then I thought of Ryan Reynolds and how much fun he’d have … But as I said, these are not very good picks :/
Graverobber: Also very hard. I thought of different people, but am also not very happy with what I came up with xD Names that popped up are Sacha Baron Cohen, Tim Curry and Johnny Depp. Each special in their own way and quite peculiar, but as Graverobber? Then I thought of Ryan Reynolds again and how funny it would be to see him act out “Zydrate Anatomy” and “Come up and try my new parts” with his wife, Blake Lively xD Mh, but to be honest I have no idea who I’d cast :/
Rotti: I actually have more picks for Rotti than I originally thought! At first I thought of Russel Crowe (I loved him and his singing voice on LesMis), then Jack Nicholson came to mind along with Danny DeVito (just for the giggles). Theeeen I thought, Wait, why not try something different? And then I landed on Jessica Lange, and actually loved the idea of making this role female :D I really think Jessica would be amazing.
And last but not least: Rotti’s Bodyguards MUST be played by the Soska Sisters as a cameo xD
Sorry for the textwall, this escalated a bit :’D

TV Quiz Questions:
Choose 4 6 of your favourite TV Shows: You should try this out too...
1. Sherlock
2. Teen Wolf
3. Nancy Drew
4. Supernatural
5. Wizards of Waverley Place
6. The Originals
The first character I fell in love with:
Sherlock Holmes
Stiles Stilinski
Nancy Drew
Dean Winchester
Alex Russo
Klaus Mikaelsson
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:
Mycroft Holmes
Derek Hale (I was really suspicious in the beginning but now he is one of my fave characters)
Ace
Castiel (I LOVE HIM SOO MUCH)
Justin Russo
Freya Mikaelson (I was worried she would be evil at first)
The character everyone else loves that I hate:
Mary Morsten (John deserved better from the beginning)
Cora was kind of annoying
I don't have one .. yet
I think some people agree with me - Mary Winchester
I don’t have one
I don’t hate him but Vincent could be so frustrating
The character everyone else hates that I love:
I don’t have one
Deucalion turned out to be pretty good character - even as a villain
I actually really like Amanda Bobbsey - she’s so sweet. (I just don’t want her as Ace’s girlfriend)
Lucifer - He’s just misunderstood (lots of people agree to with me to)
I don’t have one
I actually wanted Finn Mikaelson to come back
The character I would have sex with:
Sherlock is hot
All the guys on teen wolf- Stiles, Derek, Scott, Isaac, Theo, Liam …..
Ace - I know he would be so sweet
Dean Winchester and Castiel are at the top of my list but if I was being real … all of them
None but only cause I think of them as eternally young
All the Mikaelson men and Marcel and Jackson but first things first Klaus
Who are your five favourite characters (In order):
Sherlock, John, Mycroft, Mrs Hudson, Lestrade
Stiles, Scott, Derek, Coach, Lydia
The Drew Crew- Nancy , Ace, George, Bess, Nick (In order)
Dean, Castiel, Sam, Crowley, Bobby
Alex, Harper, Justin, Max, Jerry
Klaus, Rebekah, Elijah, Freya, Hayley, Kol
Favourite minor character:
Mycroft (does he count?)
Coach - THE FUNNIEST GUY EVER and all of the parents
Ryan Hudson- I want to see his relationship with Nancy grow
Charlie- I miss her so much
Mr Laritate
Hope Mikaelson
A pairing that you love (Romantic and Non- Romantic):
I love Sherlock and John but I really want more Sherlock and Mycroft (the brothers are so cute)
Stiles and Derek- They are hilarious!!!
Ace and Nancy - Nace supremacy
Sam and Dean are the centre of everything but I love Dean and Cas too
Alex and Harper- the besties
Klaus and Hope - he loves her unconditionally
Favourite season:
Sherlock- Season 3
Teen Wolf- Season 3
Nancy Drew- Season 2
Supernatural- Season 4 and 5
Wizards of Waverly Place- Season 4
The Originals - Season 1
Favourite episode:
Season 3 episode 1 - The Empty House
Season 3 episode 18 - Riddled
Season 1 episode 17 - The Girl in the Locket
Season 4 episode 18 - The Monster at the End of This Book
Season 4 episode 21 - Wizards of Apartment 13B
Season 1 episode 21 - From a Cradle to a Grave
Character you would kill off:
Molly - its not that I don’t love her but she’s not essential to the story
Baeden - Sterek needs to happen
Carson Drew - It would be interesting to see how Nancy would handle losing both of her parents
Sam and Dean should have been together in death and life
Professor Krumbs - It would parallel the Harry Potter series with Dumbledore
Marcel should have died for a short time and then resurrected - Klaus would realise how much he loved him
The character that I think the show ruined:
John Watson - He wasn’t ruined AT ALL but he was less impressed by Sherlock as the seasons went on
Kira Yukimura- She deserved better
Nick (Ned Nickerson) - only because he’s really different to his book counterpart but I don’t hate him
Crowley - He didn’t deserve to die at all
Mason - I don’t think it was in character for him to ‘cheat’ on Alex - he loved her
Hope Mikaelson - she contributed to the death of her mother
The most attractive male and female character:
Male: Shelock Female: None (I don’t remember)
Male: Derek Hale Female: Lydia Martin
Male: Ace Female: Bess Marvin
Male: Dean Winchester Female: Bella
Male: Mason Female: Alex Russo
Male: Klaus Mikaelson Female: Hayley Marshall
The character death that was the worst for me:
Sherlock’s fake death - John crying was heartbreaking
Allison Argent - she died in the arms of the man she loved and her dad was devastated
Lucy Sable - she killed herself because of extreme bullying and never got to meet her daughter
The first death of Sam - Dean’s speech made me cry soo much
No one died - that I remember
Klaus and Elijah- They died together
The character that is the most like me:
Molly - I am an awkward fangirl of Sherlock too
I don’t think I am similar to any but Id love to be as charming as Stiles and as brave as Scott and smart as Lydia
I’m not like any of the characters but I think I relate most to George- I too have many younger siblings.
Castiel and I are both awkward AF and I don’t understand enough pop culture references
Alex and I are both lazy AF
I have a temper that could rival that of Klaus
The characters that deserved better:
All of them deserve the world but I think Mycroft deserves better
Stiles and Derek deserve to be happy together
Nancy deserves better. She should be happy with Ace and not have to deal with her dad lying and the Hudsons
All of the characters deserve to be happy on Supernatural - They deserve the world, Dean , Sam and Castiel
Max should have got to keep his magic and be happy with his siblings
All of the Mikaelsons deserved to live happily - Klaus should have gotten to raise his daughter
My four least favorite characters, past or present:
Moriarty (I loved to hate him), Sargent Sally Donavan, Mary
Erica, Mr Lahey , Kali , Meredith Walker
Gil Bobbsey (he’s so manipulative), Everrett Hudosn, Ceila Hudson, Diana Marvin
Metatron, God, Samuel Campbell, Mary Winchester
Gigi, Stevie, Hugh Normous, Gorog
Esther, Mikael, Dhalia, Aurora de Martel
A character I’m indifferent about:
Anderson - he felt remorseful after thinking that Sherlock was dead
Kira - Her character was good but I dint love her
Bess - she can be a little shallow at times
Meg- her voice annoyed me sometimes but she loved Cas
Professor Krumbs could be little mean
Sometimes I loved her and other I hated her but in the end I think she is a strong female character
A ship I’ve never been able to get into/ shouldn’t have happened:
John and Mary - She wasn’t a great wife
Derek and Baeden- I didn’t see any chemistry at all
Nick and Nancy - Even they are endgame in the books, they didn’t have any chemistry on screen
Sam and Ruby - Mostly cause she was really sus from the beginning
Justin and Rosie - He was better with Juliet
Hope and Roman - He used her and that’s horrible on such a young girl
A ship I’ve never been able to get over:
Sherlock and John whether it be friends are lovers - they are supreme
Stiles and Derek- Even though its not canon its the best ship on the show
Nancy and Ace- They haven’t gotten together yet but I love the angst
Cas and Dean whether it be friends are lovers - they are supreme
Alex and Mason - those 2 were cute
Rebekah and Marcel- It took so long for them to be together but they finally got there
A cute, low-key ship:
Sherlock and Mycroft (not romantically- ew) as the best of brothers
Scott and Alison were so soft
Nick and George are cute- they are healthy and communicate really well
Sam and Elieen
Justin and Juliet - those nerdy cuties
Davina and Kol
My favourite storyline/moment:
Sherlock tells John he is alive - that was shocking
Dark Stiles - Nigutsune
Nancy finding about her true heritage and talking to Ryan and Nace
Cas saves Dean and becomes a part of the rest of the show
Alex erases herself and her brothers in the movie
All Klaus and Hope scenes
A storyline that never should have been written:
Sherlock’s long lost sister
The whole of season 6b
The death of Owen Marvin - he didn’t deserve to die.
Dean’s final death and Sam having to live without him
Alex and Justin accidentally turn Max int a girl
The death of Klaus, Elijah and Hayley in the final season just because of legacies

If you could change ten things about Teen Wolf what would you change??
OMG BUCKLE DOWN BECAUSE IT’S GONNA BE A LONG ONE! Do asks have a word limit? Guess we gonna find out! (Sometimes I wish I could speak these replies, they sound much funnier when I am speaking out loud to myself and then they are just weird and flat typed up but I DIGRESS! I do that a lot, have you noticed? Doesn’t matter.)
(Also, I did put a “Keep Reading” but for some reason it’s not working. Or it’s not showing as working on my end. But it’s right under this paragraph I swear so if it’s not working, that isn’t on me....)
1) SO! Trauma. People be dealing with their traumas. That’d be a thing I’d like, thank you. Like, I’m sorry, but there is a fuckton of trauma in this show and everyone like, goes to bed at night and wakes up cured. Like MAGIC! I mean, yes, I get that magic is a thing in the show (is it? I mean kind of? Idk, I never saw past season 4, they alluded to magic and then SNATCHED THAT AWAY so, side-note, that’s coming up later!) But yes, I would’ve very much liked for people to, you know, deal with their traumas in a realistic fashion. Let’s get some therapy going, or like, idk, some actual negative reactions to thing! They kind of had that with Stiles every now and then, but he seemed to be up and down episode to episode so like, it’d be like they wrote an episode where he reacts to what happened to him and then four episodes have gone by where he’s fine and the writers were like “OH YEAH SHIT HE JUST MURDERED LIKE A WHOLE HOSPITAL, make him have a panic attack randomly over dropping milk, that balances out, excellent, we’re so smart.” So yes. DEAL. WITH. THE. TRAUMA! Thanks.
2) LESS CHARACTERS, MORE DEVELOPMENT! I mentioned this in another recent ask about relationships but like, they just kept shoving characters in there. Like one of those clown cars. So we got like, 30% character development on the core group and then the rest was like “wait, who are you again?” Like, legit, I have a bad memory, you put too many people in front of me, I ain’t gonna remember them unless they have a good personality or a reason to be there. And like, develop their relationships! Not even romantically, but like, Scott’s mom loves Scott, that is sweet and lovely, but like, we never really… see… that… developed? Idk man, like again, I have a bad memory, but when you really develop relationships WELL (ex: Brooklyn-nine-nine), that shit sticks with you and you CARE about people. The friendships are important, and the familial relationships are important and just developing all the dynamics is important! They spent more time showcasing how much everyone hated each other and lied to each other and stuff and that just got really tiring. Yes, you’re allowed to get mad at your friends, but if you’re a Werewolf, and your human friend is calling you when there is a fucking monster running around killing people, can you maybe stop making out with your girlfriend and answer your phone so your friend isn’t treading water with a 200+ pound Werewolf for 2 hours? Like, JUST SAYING! (Spoiler alert: Me and Scott would not be close friends. Like, I think we’d be friends, but not so much that I’d trust him with my life. If I wanted to grab pizza and a movie, maybe play some video games, he sounds like a treat, but if my life was in danger, thanks I be callin’ someone who answers their phone).
3) Actual consequences for their actions! Okay like, I am also guilty of this in fanfic, but at the same time, my writing is free, I don’t get paid for it, and I write what I want because that’s how it works, so I can do whatever I please (If I wanna make the Hales royalty for the millionth time, ain’t nobody gonna stop me!). But like, when you are a legit paid screenwriter who is writing a show? Consequences! Just because it’s a show about Werewolves doesn’t mean there can’t be any consequences! Like, the best scene, and I feel like we can agree, because fuck it like, hurt my soul and my heart and I was just so like ;~; was when the sheriff got fired (fired? suspended? TEMPORARILY UNEMPLOYED!) because Stiles stole a police van when they locked Jackson up in it. Like, that shit was REAL LIFE CONSEQUENCES for actions, and that shit was intense and it HURT and omg I loved it! Give me more of that! Like, I’m sorry, but you gonna tell me Nogistune!Stiles walked through the hospital murdering a bazillion people and not one camera was working the whole time? Not one? Nobody saw that? Nobody went “hey, isn’t that the sheriff’s kid?” Like, CAN. YOU. IMAGINE?! That would’ve been so amazing, a bunch of episodes of the pack scrambling to keep the Supernatural a secret while also trying to stop Stiles from GETTING ARRESTED because saying “Sorry ma’am, I was possessed by a demon fox who likes chaos and thought murdering a bunch of people would be fun” ain’t gonna fly in court and the FBI sure isn’t gonna believe that but like, UGH! Again, bad memory, but was the fact that Dark!Stiles wandered through the hospital killing people EVER brought up again???? CONSEQUENCES. Woulda really liked that.
4) STOP with unnecessary romances. Like, yeah, I get it, the allos like their romances, but shockingly, you can still have a good show without focussing on the romance. Like, it can be there, I’m not saying don’t put it in, I’m saying DON’T MAKE IT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING! Like, the entirety of season one was Scott chasing Allison and Stiles chasing Lydia. This… this does not make an interesting show? Like, is that just me? And then as the season progressed, EVERYONE had to be in a relationship? WHY? Again, haven’t seen past season four, but I mean, I know Scott and Kira were a thing, and then Stiles and Malia, and Liam and some… person? Idk. And Ethan and Danny (congrats Jeff, you get to tick your “I had representation in my show!” box, well done, gold star, or whatever). And Isaac and Allison, and Melissa and Chris (apparently?). And then Stydia was alluded as being canon, and Scott ended up with Malia somehow?? And Derek slept with half the town and all of Mexico, idek. Like, stop it. Stop. Shows work without everything being about everyone banging each other. (See again: Brooklyn-nine-nine, or Avatar the Last Airbender, or The Good Place, or even fucking Supernatural!) You can have a good, interesting story without everyone banging each other. It ain’t necessary.
5) More actual storytelling (again, this woulda worked better without the unnecessary romances taking up 49 of the 50 minutes of air-time). Like, yes, I get it, pilot’s gotta have some pizzaz! Gotta be spicy and sparkly to make people interested (and like, fucking hell, all I can remember of the pilot is sobbing Allison soaking wet–LIKE, WAS THAT NECESSARY???–about the dog she hit and oh noes is it dead well thank God the lead character works for a vet! And somehow has keys and access to the whole clinic like nbd at all hours? Whatever. I wasn’t even allowed inside my blockbuster as a shift lead if it was off-hours but apparently a high school student doing paperwork at a vet clinic is different, I’m not a vet so what do I know? I HAD A BAD DAY OKAY, I GOT FEELINGS ABOUT THIS RN!) I went off-topic, what was I saying? Oh yes, storytelling. You know what woulda been nice? Werewolves! It happens, we find out about Laura, we find out about Werewolves, Scott gets bitten, all that jazz. And then like… ease in the Hunters? Like, why was there Laura/Derek, Peter, AND the Hunters all crammed into the pilot? Yes, I get it, you need the SUSPENSE and the DRAMA, but you can do that without the Hunters right off the bat. Just, how CONVENIENT~ that the same day Derek and Laura come back, Hunters move to town? That’s just lazy, and again, I can be guilty of laziness, I admit to it, but I literally get paid in—like, do hearts count? I get paid in hearts and pats on the back for my fics, I can write whatever I want. If you’re getting paid to write something, try a bit harder, yes? Yes???
What number am I on? Oh good Lord, I got things to say, okay.
6) MAGIC! Can you like—I feel like this one is self-explanatory. Stiles did the whole mountain ash thing in season one, and it was SO PROMISING, and then that just died. It died like Maes Hughes getting shot in a phonebooth (spoiler, but really, you haven’t seen that yet, that’s a you problem). Why even bother introducing magic if you weren’t gonna use it? Like, was it because people like Stiles more than Scott and the showrunner was like “nonono. If we make him magic, he’s TOO cool, and then Scott is unimportant.” I mean, you coulda worked that in your favour, but no. You just murdered the fuck out of it, like straight up took it out back and shot it. Like, yeah, Derek went kiddo again and Jennifer was apparently all magic beauty spell or whatever, but like?? That’s it??? You had a show about Werewolves and you didn’t even try to make it more interesting by making some of the characters magic? Lydia’s basically the closest and they didn’t even explain her powers that well. Magic would’ve been dope and they totally shoved that to the side. That was dumb. Shoulda done something with that.
7) Explain things more? Don’t mention them once and then do nothing? Like, we got some brief stuff about anchors, and emissaries (which are super duper secret according to Deaton but then like, EVERYONE KNOWS HE IS EMISSARY SO WHICH IS IT DEATON? YOU TELL ME!) Like, they had so much opportunity to talk about so many things and again, maybe that comes out more in the later seasons, idk, but they likely coulda done with more explanations and they didn’t and this angers me GREATLY. They mention something once and then it never comes up again. That’s some Lost bullshit right there. Don’t start something if you’re not gonna commit. You tell me the beginning of the story, I wanna fucking know the end, don’t forget halfway through and wander away, that ain’t right, I NEED ANSWERS JEFF! And like, as above, never really got Lydia’s powers. I know what a Banshee is, but her powers did NOT make sense to me. Idk, could just be that I’m dumb, but similarly, don’t write something so convoluted that it confuses people, that is also dumb. As dumb as I am so like, well done there. And also do we get more on Parrish? I know he’s a Hellhound, but how does one get born a Hellhound and not know until you are conveniently lit on fire by someone trying to kill you for money? (Also, you bean, you absolute treasure, “I’m worth five dollars?” You’re so cute. Silly child.) I feel like being a Hellhound is something that woulda come up before getting barbecued in his cruiser. Like, he works a stressful job, you gonna tell me not ONCE while getting shot at he didn’t have a massive heart attack over a close call and like, burst into flames? No? Is that just a me thing? I feel like the slightest annoyance and I’d be fully on fire, not gonna lie. (I’d be on fire a LOT… CLEARLY I AM AN ANGRY PERSON! No, that’s not true. No yes it is, I am angry, but more angry lately because I’m sleep-deprived and work is dumb ANYWAY back to this)
8) EMBRACE THE SIDE CHARACTERS! Okay, so MAYBE Scott is meant to be the golden child. The Dick Grayson of the show, if you will. The original Robin, the creme de la creme. That’s all fine and dandy if he is, no judgement (little judgement), but you know what you don’t do when your side characters are getting a lot of attention and love? What you DO NOT do is give them less screen time. Because then you’re being petty and, shockingly, you get more positive results when you give the fans what they want. I’m not talking about pairings, because everyone is different, and you can’t cater to everyone, but like, the more people moved away from liking Scott, the harder the showrunners pushed him into our faces. And like, that isn’t how this works. If I like side character 87 a lot, and the lead’s getting annoying, you know what’s gonna make me NOT watch the show? Cutting out side character 87 (hey, for shits and gigs, let’s call him DANNY, just, not coincidentally at all) and then just shoving the lead into my face. That is what makes someone go “Well, four seasons is enough, I can happily live knowing I didn’t waste my life watching two more of them.” Like??? I’m not saying cut out Scott, because the show is ABOUT Scott, but the more everyone tried to showcase how amazing and wonderful and pure and perfect he was, the more annoying it got? Like, Scott has flaws. THEY ALL HAVE FLAWS! If you don’t admit that they all have flaws, it gets boring, and you hate the characters. I know that Scott turned into a douche later (apparently, again, haven’t seen it), but even in the early seasons by trying to make him this pure True Alpha golden angel child who spreads love and hope and trusts everyone, it just got boring. He was vanilla, and also a bad friend, because he was too “perfect” to be around someone “imperfect” like Stiles, and even like, the rest of the pack overall. He was always put on a pedestal and it made the show really… irksome? Idk, I just feel like yes, SCOTT is the Teen Wolf, but you added all these damn side characters, maybe use them a bit more? At least Stiles was interesting, and Lydia was fucking badass, and fucking hell, if you’d done right by Boyd and Erica, the actors wouldn’t have left for better shows so like, come on man, you coulda done better. We coulda had such a dope show, why you gotta crush my dreams like that Jeff? What did I ever do to you?
I know this is only eight, but this is long enough, if I go two more, this is gonna be IN.SANE. And also it’s late and I haven’t finished my fic for the day (I mean, I’m almost done, but I’m not done yet!) So like, I’ma stop here. But yes, hopefully this answered your question. Sorry I got REALLY PASSIONATE about it but it’s been a day.
Also, I feel this needs to be said, but obviously these are my own personal opinions, and as opinions, you are not obligated to agree with them. But you are also not allowed to tell me my opinion is wrong. You can disagree with it, but this is an opinion, not a law, so there is no right and wrong. Don’t @ me, my day’s been bad enough kthx!
HAVE A GOOD NIGHT, BE BACK IN LIKE TWENTY(?) MINUTES!

Page 1: Scott Disick's mid-life makeover -- some guys buy a convertible but Scott already has a garage full of fancy rides, so what else to do when you're edging close to 40, split from the mom of your three kids and are already dating a 19-year-old model? Well, bleach your hair platinum, of course!
Page 2: Contents, Leighton Meester and Adam Brody celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary with a couple's surf session

Page 4: After hosting countless rose ceremonies over nearly two decades of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, Chris Harrison is now in the hot seat himself and facing backlash for defending current Bachelor frontrunner Rachael Kirkconnell who's been accused of racist behavior -- the next day, Chris apologized and said he was stepping aside as host of the dating reality series but the damage was done as Rachel Lindsay who is the first Black lead in the franchise's history revealed she won't renew her Bachelor contract and current Bachelor Matt James supported her -- as for Chris, the fallout continues as Crest are considering pulling down ads featuring him but with critics calling for his ouster Chris wants his job back and no one at ABC wants to see him replaced but those conversations are happening
Page 5: Miley Cyrus has an idea how to help Britney Spears in her legal battle to replace dad Jamie Spears as her conservator -- Miley is hoping she and Britney can record a classic song together like an anthem like Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves or Enough Is Enough and she's hoping to get Britney on board but that may be a challenge with the legal restrictions in place
* Mom-of-eight Kate Gosselin didn't get what she was asking for on her house in Pennsylvania -- it's upsetting that she got less than she paid for it but her hand was forced; it costs a lot to keep up a house like that on 20-plus acres and with years of roughhousing, it needs a lot of work -- with twins Mady and Cara already in college and the sextuplets growing up, Kate hopes to jump-start her career and she's dying to leave Pennsylvania and head to Hollywood
* Paris Hilton's boyfriend of just over a year Carter Reum dropped to one knee on a gorgeous private beach and offered Paris his heart and a sparkler from Cartier and she said yes -- close family was on hand to celebrate the couple who have been friends for 15 years and the party went on well into the evening -- now Paris is already making wedding plans for something simple and elegant with a gorgeous dinner and the couple is ready to start a family sooner rather than later and she's hinted she's already started IVF and if she gets pregnant they'll just push up the wedding
Page 6: Ryan Gosling needed some time off after 2018's moon-landing biopic First Man because he really became Neil Armstrong during the six months of shooting and he was absolutely drained after finishing it and he spent the next two years with wife Eva Mendes being a full-time dad to their two young kids -- now he's back and with three movies lined up, he's looking at a $75 million paycheck this year -- in addition to The Gray Man, he's gearing up for a Wolfman update and another space adventure called Project Hail Mary -- he wants to be a popcorn-movie star and he's going full-blown buff-and-shirtless action hero
* Allen v. Farrow is a new investigation into 1992 allegations about Woody Allen by his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow and her mother Mia Farrow that digs up damning new evidence against the director -- one harrowing home video shows the then-7-year-old Dylan saying her dad touched her privates and later a doorman and a building manager and a maid at Allen's NYC residence raise questions about when Woody began his shocking relationship with Mia's teen daughter Soon-Yi -- Mia also expresses fear in the doc, saying she worries that when the documentary comes out he'll be on the attack again and he'll do whatever he has to do to save himself
* Star Spots the Stars -- Julia Roberts, Joe Jonas, Luann de Lesseps, Christina Aguilera, Kaia Gerber, Tarek El Moussa and Heather Rae Young
Page 8: Star Shots -- With balloons and a box of chocolate in hand lifestyle expert Gretta Monahan arrived at The View, Melissa Gorga snacked on a huge box of sweets between Zoom interviews to promote the 11 season of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Vanessa Lachey prepared to host a Galentine's Day celebration with macarons and wine

Page 20: Normal or Not? Farrah Abraham suffered a serious wardrobe malfunction while hitting the sand in Malibu -- not normal, Nikki Reed gushing over her therapy chicken -- normal, Property Brothers' Drew Scott booty bumpin' with wife Linda Phan -- not normal, Lucy Hale lovingly held onto her new dog Ethel while fueling up her ride in L.A. -- normal

Page 23: Rihanna, Kirsten Dunst
Page 26: Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker are having sexy slumber parties at Kourtney's $8.5 million Calabasas pad and they are spending so much time together and she loves having him sleep over and he'll stay the whole weekend -- Travis who has lived nearby in the gated community for years is already making himself at home and not only has he moved a bunch of stuff into Kourtney's property but she leaves him to chill out and enjoy his space if she has to run errands -- even if it seems the couple is moving and moving in fast, their respective broods are on board with the new arrangement and Kourtney's kids Mason, Penelope and Reign love having Travis around and meanwhile the door is always open for Travis' kids Alabama and Landon, and Travis and Kourtney do a lot of fun stuff with their kids together -- there's already speculation that the move-in will be permanent because Kourtney knows a good thing when she sees it and Travis checks all the boxes
Page 27: Meeting the in-laws might be a little complicated for newly engaged Shailene Woodley and Aaron Rodgers because the Green Bay Packers QB is famously estranged from his Chico, California-based family -- in 2016 Aaron's younger brother Jordan Rodgers exposed the rift while competing on The Bachelorette and at the time, fans blamed Aaron's then-girlfriend Olivia Munn for turning him Hollywood but the trouble continued after their 2017 split -- now that he's with Shailene, Aaron doesn't want to bring her into that toxic atmosphere but Shailene who once called her own folks super f**ked up is not deterred and she is encouraging Aaron to let bygones be bygones but he's not ready
* Melissa and Joe Gorga's marriage troubles will play out on the new season of The Real Housewives of New Jersey but their issues are even worse behind the scenes and they've been butting heads as Melissa's career continues to skyrocket so she's distracted with work and doesn't have time for Joe and he feels neglected and he isn't one to hold back -- it doesn't help that the Envy boutique owner was rumored to be getting close to another man -- the couple is trying to work out their issues for the sake of their three kids but Melissa may be done
Page 28: Cover Story -- George Clooney and Brad Pitt: The Breaking Point -- fights, jealousy and other women -- the former besties had a major falling out and now mutual friend Sandra Bullock is desperate to reunite them -- George and Brad have barely spoken in eight years and they've definitely gone their separate ways and Brad's ex-wife Angelina Jolie played a big part in the demise of their friendship because Angie felt George took Brad away from her and their kids -- Amal Clooney found Angie unbearable and that was kind of the point of no return for Brad and George -- George is struggling to regain his luster as a director while Brad is out there winning Oscars
Page 32: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle: Interview Shockers -- as they prep for baby number two, Harry and Meghan announce a no-holds-barred interview, leaving the palace on edge
Page 34: Celebs in Wheel Trouble -- don't drink (or drug) and drive; these stars got caught making some very bad decisions -- Bruce Springsteen, mug shots of Justin Bieber
Page 35: Reese Witherspoon, Vince Vaughn, Lindsay Lohan, Michael Phelps, Khloe Kardashian, Henry Thomas, Heather Locklear, Jesse Luken, Mel Gibson
Page 36: Beauty -- curl care -- strengthen every type of wave and coil with cool new miracle workers
Page 48: Parting Shot -- Bill Murray teamed up with NFL player Larry Fitzgerald for the AT&T Every Shot Counts Charity Challenge in Pebble Beach -- despite landing in third place, Bill and Larry made a great pair, earning an impressive $209,000 for local charities

some random veep tid bits
disclaimer cause the last time i did a post like this ya’ll wanted sources and i’m telling you all now the following is all from tweets, podcasts, interviews, and commentary on the dvds!
the scene in 3x01 where selina falls out off the chair wasn’t scripted…it was julia accidentally falling out of the chair
one time during season 5 they were told that they were going to open a suitcase and there would be a dildo inside of it and they opened the suitcase and there was actually a dildo in it
the cast/showrunners are always claiming they don’t identify political parties but in the episode ‘election night’ the electoral map on the screen has all of selina’s states in blue, confirming she was a democrat
Tumblr media
they took a hiatus IMMEDIATELY following hillary losing the election. it lasted two weeks
the pilot was shot in a mattress warehouse in maryland and when a mattress was finished there would be buzzing noise and they’d have to stop filming until it stopped
in season 1 whenever a character is on the phone, they’re actually on a real phone call with another cast member
there’s a scene in s4 where gary mentions selina using a hand lotion from la prairie, the line was added bc jld uses some expensive ass product from and when tony hale found out he was so shocked they decided to add it in to make fun of her
at sxsw 2017 the cast received 24k gold vibrators
it was really hot the day they filmed 1x03 so JLD had an idea to try to keep everyone’s moods up by doing a take where they all walked down the hallway making stupid faces and walking weird. reid ended up carrying tony down the hall on his back.
the scene where gary and mike break the queen’s china while in the uk wasn’t scripted either and it was tony and matt accidentally breaking the china and not knowing what to do with it
armando wrote tom james specifically for hugh laurie after hugh said he loved the show
jld’s husband directed ‘c*ntgate’
dan’s last name came from simon blackwell‘s (one of the writers) first love who broke his heart
deidrich bader (who plays bill ericcson) was made fun of by one of the directors because he would catch him staring at hugh laurie with a stupid ass grin on his face when they were both on the show in season 4
in the commentary for 1x01 they mention how jonah was supposed to originally be a heavy smoker/drinker
there’s a scene in 2x06 where you can see that julia taped her sides (lines) to a prop
Tumblr media
when they were filming the end of ‘frozen yoghurt’ (1x02) after Dan, Amy, and Selina get into the car at the end, JLD, Reid, & Anna ended up driving around in the limo making fart and vomiting noises.
when they were doing research for the series, they were across the street from the white house and filming the entrances and they ended up getting swarmed by secret service
mitt romney was invited to their offices summer of 2016 sot hat they could ask him about losing
julia likes to be barefoot when shooting scenes with tim because she thinks the height difference between them is funny
rehearsals for season one took place in london
anna chlumsky went into labor with her first daughter after having rehearsal for an episode during season 3
the entire plot of the season 6 episode ‘blurb’ was to find a way to bring hugh laurie back
it’s been a hot minute since i listened to the commentary so the next time i do i’ll add stuff to this

The calls for action were mounting. It was mid-June, and the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy, which saw thousands of migrant children separated from their parents, was producing waves of outrage. By the end of the month, hundreds of protests were planned in towns and cities across the country. As the plans moved forward, others took notice.
In the days leading up to the protests, a private intelligence company that works with the Department of Homeland Security was monitoring the activity on the ground. Documents shared with The Intercept by the American Immigration Council, obtained through a freedom of information request, show that LookingGlass Cyber Solutions, a Virginia-based firm, gathered information on more than 600 demonstrations across the country, information that was then shared with DHS and state-level law enforcement agencies.
Tracking Facebook accounts affiliated with the protests and disseminating the intelligence to law enforcement fusion centers nationwide, the operation drilled down on physical locations where demonstrations were planned: a high school in Sebring, Florida; a church in Carbondale, Illinois; the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City; a Denny’s in Carlsbad, California; and “the old Kmart parking lot” in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. All were logged by street address and the time of the planned demonstrations.
A “Threat Analyst” in Reston, Virginia, sent the finished intelligence to a “LookingGlass Shared Services” address on June 28, two days before the protests were set to begin.
“LookingGlass has compiled a spreadsheet for State Fusion Centers detailing over 600 planned ‘Family Separation Day Protests’ across the US on June 30,” the analyst’s email read. “These originated from Cyber Threat Center (CTC) and are broken out by City and State; they provide physical location and the Facebook event ID.”
The following morning, the headquarters of DHS’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis disseminated the information to its staff, which was later circulated among Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel.
In a statement, LookingGlass Chief Marketing Officer Joy Nemitz told The Intercept, “As a matter of company policy and confidentiality, we do not comment on matters pertaining to clients or work performed and refer all queries to the company in question.” A DHS official, speaking on background, described the information LookingGlass collected as “unsolicited.”
“The Department of Homeland Security, Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A) works with federal partners, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and state and local law enforcement through the National Network of Fusion Centers to assess threats and analyze trends in activity,” the official said in an email. “In this particular instance, a private sector entity shared unsolicited information it collected through publicly available channels with DHS I&A on protests that were scheduled to take place near Federal facilities. Throughout the summer of 2018, the Department was at a heightened state of security due to ongoing protests outside of Federal facilities and physical threats to DHS employees which did result in a least one arrest.”
The official added: “When DHS I&A receives this type of information, we are required to share it consistent with DHS policy to ensure stakeholders have appropriate situational awareness regarding personnel, facilities, suspicious activities, emerging threats, incidents, operations, and operational capabilities affecting the Department or the Homeland Security Enterprise.”
Jess Morales Rocketto, co-chair of Families Belong Together and a lead organizer of last year’s protests, condemned the monitoring of the demonstrations. “Those protests represented the best of democracy,” she told The Intercept. “It’s especially concerning given that these protests were basically thousands of moms and their kids, thousands of families, and that the Trump administration’s response to that was to put them on a watch list.”
The emails confirming the protest surveillance were released in an ongoing freedom of information battle that the American Immigration Council, or AIC — in collaboration with the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project, the National Immigrant Justice Center, Kids in Need of Defense, Women’s Refugee Commission, and Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP — is waging to pry documents surrounding family separation from the government.
“We’ve been getting them in drips,” Emily Creighton, deputy legal director at the AIC, said of the documents beginning to surface as a result of the litigation. “We have been told in litigation that ICE, DHS, and CBP have hundreds of thousands of responsive records.”
For immigration attorneys working with families directly impacted by the administration’s “zero tolerance” regime, news of protests being monitored makes an ugly situation even worse.
“The public rightly expressed outrage when they learned of the Trump administration’s shocking policy of ripping children away from their parents,” Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Immigrants’ Rights Project and lead attorney in a lawsuit challenging family separation, told The Intercept. “They’ll again be outraged to learn that, rather than focusing resources on reuniting these families, the administration was instead spying on them for expressing themselves.”
Intel for Profit
As an operation, LookingGlass Cyber Solutions appears to fit squarely in the larger universe of for-profit intelligence providers pitching services to law enforcement in a post-9/11 world.
In 2015, the company acquired Cyveillance, “a leader in open-source threat intelligence” that, according to the firm’s website, “delivers an open source intelligence-led approach to security through continuous, comprehensive monitoring and analysis of millions of online data sources to protect client information, infrastructure, and employees from physical and online threats.” Records indicate that Cyveillance previously provided contract work for the U.S. State Department.
In a jargon-heavy brochure, LookingGlass describes its “DHS Cybersecurity Shared Services Program for State Fusion Centers” as a combination of services and platforms designed to provide “insight and technical indicators to support a range of activities from high-level situational awareness to actionable recourse.” The company touts the expertise of its analysts and their ability to provide “deep-dive analysis, technical indicators, and situational awareness reporting,” while highlighting the role of its Cyber Threat Center as “an aggregator of global news, social media, and physical security events aligned to an organization’s area of interest.”
“CTC can be configured to provide analysts with cyber news matching topics of relevance and physical incident alerts in user-defined proximity ranges around a given point on the map,” the company reports. “Since global events can have impacts at local levels, analysts utilizing CTC will benefit from the data collection breadth of global sources from the surface web and Deep and Dark Web.”
Stood up in the wake of the September 11 attacks as another node in the war on terror, the fusion centers that companies like LookingGlass cater to have long been the target of criticism.
In a withering 2012 report, congressional investigators found that “DHS-assigned detailees to the fusion centers forwarded ‘intelligence’ of uneven quality — oftentimes shoddy, rarely timely, sometimes endangering citizens’ civil liberties and Privacy Act protections, occasionally taken from already-published public sources, and more often than not unrelated to terrorism.” The report was particularly hard on DHS’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis — the office that saw fit to distribute LookingGlass’s monitoring of family separation protests.
“This document shows that DHS accepts and distributes surveillance of protest activity on social media, including to fusion centers, which have a track record of monitoring innocent and constitutionally protected conduct,” Hugh Handeyside, a senior staff attorney at the ACLU’s National Security Project, told The Intercept, after reviewing LookingGlass’s work product.
“It also demonstrates the reach of surveillance contractors and the products they’re peddling,” Handeyside added. “We need to know a lot more about these products and how the government is using them.”

70th anniversary of Julie Andrews Christmas pantomime debut in Humpty Dumpty London Casino, 119 performances (21 December 1948 - 5 March 1949)
Seventy years ago this month, the young Julie Andrews realised another significant career milestone when she made her professional pantomime debut in Emile Littler’s all-star production of Humpty Dumpty. Blending music, dance and slapstick into a family variety entertainment, pantomimes, or ‘pantos’ as they are popularly known, are a longstanding British theatrical staple most popularly staged at Christmastime. And Emile Littler, part of a dynasty of theatrical impresarios that ruled the West End for decades across the mid-20th century, was the undisputed king of Christmas pantomime spectaculars  (Hughes, 128).
Being cast in a Littler ‘panto’ was, thus, a major professional coup for the 13-year-old Julie Andrews who had not long come out of her acclaimed twelve-month stint in Starlight Roof. Cast alongside fellow Starlight Roof alumni, Vic Oliver and Pat Kirkwood, and other major UK stars of the era such as comedian Richard Hearne, Julie assumed the titular role of Humpty the Egg. As Julie recalls:
“My first entrance in the show was accompanied by great flashes of lightning and a blackout. The big, prop egg on the wall toppled backward and I, lying on my back in a second, cracked egg backstage, would be thrust upright and through a hidden door in the wall during the blackout to be revealed, sitting cross-legged and surprised, at the foot of it. I was dressed as a boy, with shorts, suspenders, and a jacket. I don’t remember much about my role, but at some point in the show I sang an obligatory song, “I Heard a Robin Singing,” which had nothing whatsoever to do with the story. Fortunately, once again, I received a lovely ovation from the audience on opening night, and the following morning the headlines of one review stated: ‘Young Julie Andrews as usual stole the show’ (Andrews, 95).
Indeed, Julie was singled out in nearly all the show’s notices, with reviewers praising not only her virtuoso singing but accomplished juvenile acting skills:
“Julie Andrews, the 13-year-old pocket-sized soprano, made her pantomime debut..and, once again stopped the show with her grown-up trills. The title role gives her more to say but less to sing than before, but in song and speech alike she is sweetly, unprecociously self-assured” (Wilson, 3).
“The…outstanding success of the show is Julie Andrews, who not only uses that remarkable voice of hers to full advantage…but acts in a convincing manner. She has plenty to do and does it all well.”  (“The Casino”, 2).
“The star of the show is little Julie Andrews as Humpty Dumpty. Her singing is in the top class and she is also a spirited actress” (”London Letter,” 2).
“Humpty Dumpty––as mischievous as is unorthodox––is little Julie Andrews, whose high trilling notes and superb self-confidence took the audience of ‘Starlight Roof’…by surprise and destined her for a Humpty Dumpty of no ordinary kind” (“Humpty Dumpty”, 2).
“Little Miss Andrews, as Humpty Dumpty himself, stopped the show, as the saying runs, with her singing” (”London Notes”, 2).
“A spectacular production…with the pure, unforced soprano of small Julie Andrews proving most effective” (”Panto is Hatched”, 3).
“There is Miss Julie Andrews, who is hardly old enough to be interested in anything but Pêche Melbas, and vocally is really rather a peach of a Melba herself” (”Pantomimes”, 2).
“And, finally, a plum indeed, little Miss Julie Andrews as Humpty treats us to singing incredibly mature for her age” (Keown, 24).
With rave reviews like that, it’s no surprise that Humpty Dumpty proved a huge success. Even before the show opened, 50,000 tickets had pre-sold across the projected two month run (”Variety Gossip”, 3). Demand was so great that Littler opted to extend the season an extra month till 5 March (”Chit Chat”, 6).
Humpty Dumpty even attracted the attention of some rather notable theatregoers. The show was selected for a special pre-opening Royal Performance on 20 December in aid of King George’s Fund for Sailors. Queen Mary was the official royal sponsor of the benefit and she brought along the Duchess of Kent and her two elder children, the Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra, all of whom “laughed heartily at the antics” and joined the “tremendous applause” at the close (“Jennifer Writes”, 6). During the interval, Julie and several of the other principals were presented to the Queen (”Queen Mary”, 4). Word of the show must have spread back at the Palace because a few weeks later, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret attended a performance, escorted by the Duke of Edinburgh (”Princesses”, 1).
Several press reports made special mention of the fact that Julie was unwell for the opening of Humpty Dumpty with what was described as “a cold” but that, in true trouper spirit, she went on and sang beautifully (Wilson, 2). She would, however, miss a performance on the night of December 28 requiring one of the juvenile dancers from the chorus, Shirley (Fuzzy) Alpress, to take over “at a moment’s notice” (”Understudy”, 5). Years later, in her autobiography Julie recalls that she actually had the mumps during the run but was sworn to secrecy by her mother, which can’t have been easy for her, physically or emotionally (Andrews, 96).
With Humpty Dumpty, Julie Andrews proved herself a rounded theatrical performer and not just a one-trick novelty act suggested by her “prima donna in pigtails” turn in Starlight Roof. Co-star Pat Kirkwood later reflected:
“However nervous Julie may have been in Humpty Dumpty, she seemed to have a certain inner strength in that she always knew what she wanted to do and did it. I don’t think she had ever acted before in her life, but she played this part so beautifully, with a kind of simplicity and innocence which she still brings across today” (Cottrell, 51).
Julie’s breakout success in Humpty Dumpty would help secure parts in subsequent Christmas pantos, pretty much every year thereafter, culminating in the lead role of Cinderella at the Palladium in 1953/54 where she came to the attention of visiting US producers looking for a new star to lead the Broadway production of The Boy Friend. And, well, the rest as they say…

Sydney Morning Herald: Lily Collins on outshining dad Phil and her new blockbuster role
Lily Collins is in a good place right now, the best place, perhaps, in her quietly glittering career. The British-American actor, 29, has the sort of resumé – movie star, fashion icon, proper published author – that might make her an object of envy were she not so grounded, so very relatable. But it's her forthcoming, wildly praised role as Fantine, that oh-so-tragic young factory worker, in a six-part BBC adaptation of Victor Hugo's famed 1862 novel, Les Misérables, that looks set to send her stratospheric.
"It's a role I've been preparing for all my life," says Lily, hazel eyes dancing under big, beautiful brows. "I mean, I read the book at school" – that's Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles – "but if I had known I was going to play Fantine one day, I would definitely have paid more attention!"
“It’s the things that make you different that end up making you unique.”
She gives a smile. "Fantine drives the story at the beginning and her essence and memory continue throughout the series. To me she represents everlasting hope in times of darkness, no matter what the time period."
There have been several versions of Les Misérables, of course, the most famous being the musical that is still playing on Broadway and in London's West End, and the similarly sung-through 2012 movie starring Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe, with Anne Hathaway as Fantine.
A sweet-natured grisette (young, working-class Frenchwoman), Fantine's seduction by an older student, the charming cad Felix (Johnny Flynn in the BBC series), results in her falling pregnant and struggling to survive as a single mother. Conned by her child's carers, destitute and desperate, she falls on hard times. Fantine is an iconic character, and one that miniseries director Tom Shankland encouraged Lily to make her own.
"Tom told me to forget every other Les Mis I'd seen and just go back to the writing," says Lily of this song-free version, scripted by Andrew Davies (who wrote the US version of House of Cards) and is delivered in plain-spoken, vowel-dropped English despite the epic backdrop of 19th-century France (or Belgium masquerading as France) at a time of civil unrest.
"We were encouraged to bring a fresh take, to breathe life into a song lyric and make it an episode," she continues in her soft American twang. "Not everybody loves musicals. So where Fantine has a line in one of her songs that mentions her falling in love, now we get to see how it happened."
Lily is here at BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) in central London for the premiere of Les Misérables, the cast of which includes David Oyelowo, Dominic West and Olivia Colman. It's raining outside, but Lily – standing reed-slim in an ultra-tight sparkling minidress ("It's going to be tricky for me to sit down") – oozes the sunniness of California, where she has been based since the age of five, having moved there from England following her parents' divorce. The daughter of former Genesis drummer (and later singer) Phil Collins and his American second wife, Jill Tavelman, Lily might easily have fast-tracked her ascent by trading on her surname.
She hasn't, which makes her success all the sweeter. "I am super proud of my dad," she has said of her hit-maker father, who has five children by his three ex-wives (and who recently toured Australia). "But I wanted to do it on my own. People assume it's easier when you have that name but if you're the kind of person who doesn't want to use it, it's a lot harder."
Nevertheless, from her first on-screen appearance, aged two, in a BBC series called Growing Pains, Lily's rise seems to have been remarkably smooth. Performing is in her blood, after all: as a young girl she'd watch old Hollywood films, many featuring her maternal grandmother Jane Hale, a ballerina and actress, then dress up to mimic her favourite characters.
She attended the Youth Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles, taking part in musical theatre productions. She was also a teen columnist for UK magazine Elle Girl, and a socialite whose alabaster beauty caught the eye of Chanel, which dressed her in a gown for a debutante ball that featured in the reality TV show The Hills.
By 2008, Lily was in demand as a model and brand ambassador (she is currently the face of French beauty brand Lancôme) and making a name as a red-carpet correspondent and children's TV presenter. A year later, she featured as a minor character in the American teen drama series 90210 and made her film debut as Sandra Bullock's daughter in the Oscar-nominated The Blind Side.
The scripts started tumbling in, and Lily dropped out of studying broadcast journalism to take supporting roles in an action film and a thriller. In 2012, she starred in Mirror Mirror as a sword-wielding Snow White opposite Julia Roberts' evil queen.
"So Fantine is not the first time I've played a literary character with opinions," grins Lily, who lobbied for a second audition for Snow White after being unhappy with her first try-out, duly clinching the part.
"I wanted to do it on my own. People assume it's easier when you have that name but if you're the kind of person who doesn't want to use it, it's a lot harder."
There's also been sci-fi (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones), throwback romantic-comedy drama (Warren Beatty's Rules Don't Apply, which got her a Golden Globe nomination), and the CGI-enhanced Okja, in which she played a young animal activist intent on saving her best (four-legged) friend.
And there was a lead role in the controversial anorexia drama To the Bone. It divided critics but Lily has insisted that it helped her understand her own teenage battle with eating disorders, which she detailed in her 2017 memoir, Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me.
"It's very rare you get the opportunity to wear shoes you once wore with a different perspective on things," she told Vanity Fair. "This was an amazing opportunity to gain knowledge, and helped me let go a lot."
As did the writing of Unfiltered. Divulging personal information in print is one thing. Doing so when you have a famous dad and 13 million Instagram followers is another. Lily – who wrote every word herself – says she found the process liberating.
"I decided to write the book because I kept reading what people were posting on social media and thinking, 'You're so brave,' " she says. "It was a really difficult thing for me to do, but the feedback I got made it way more rewarding than I expected."
Boyfriends' names were changed in an essay on dating (if rumoured exes Zac Efron and Chris Evans are in there, she's not saying). Silliness is praised as attractive; those eyebrows, which she plucked to thin lines at school, are reclaimed and championed in all their bushy glory. And in an open letter to her father, Lily tells the 67-year-old that she "forgives" him for "not being the dad I expected", and notes the impact that her parents' famously messy divorce had on her teenage years: "I accept and honour the sadness and anger I felt towards the things you did or didn't do," she writes.
Today she'd prefer not to discuss specifics, though offers You'll Be in My Heart from the 1999 Disney animated film Tarzan when asked to choose her favourite Phil Collins song: "He wrote it as a lullaby to me as a kid," she says, re-routing the conversation to Unfiltered and the main reason she set fingers to laptop: to make young people feel less alone. The sentiment dovetails with Lily's advocacy work for charities including Bystander Revolution, an anti-bullying organisation, and the GO Campaign, which raises funds for orphans and vulnerable children.
"Open communication with teenagers is something I'm very passionate about," she says. "Speaking about insecurities and being honest about what you are going through is vital. One young woman asked me, 'But what if you know you're born different, if your quirks and interests aren't the norm? When you're a green apple when everyone else is a red one?'
"I said, 'Well, I've always loved green apples! It's the things that make you different that end up making you unique.' " She pauses for a beat. "So many kids have these deep, thoughtful questions. It doesn't matter what political, religious, sexual-orientation background you come from, we all go through the same insecurities and realising this fact is the beauty of communications."
"It's very rare you get the opportunity to wear shoes you once wore with a different perspective on things"
Additionally, by setting her own example – by putting it all out there in Unfiltered – Lily was able to let go of personal baggage, which in turn allowed her to go deeper into her characters. Forthcoming appearances include two extremes: Edith Bratt, beloved wife and muse of English writer J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings, in the biopic Tolkien, and Liz Kendall, longtime girlfriend of infamous American serial killer Ted Bundy in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.
"I'd just finished filming that when I jumped on a plane and flew to Brussels in winter to start Les Mis," says Lily. "My state of mind was already very dark, so when I found we were working backwards, that the end of Fantine's life was being filmed on day two of shooting, I used this weird head space to help me lean into her character."
Lily portrays Fantine, a fallen woman who sells her hair, then her teeth, then her body to earn money for her daughter, with a deft mix of steeliness, sassiness and grace. Much of the filming took place in sub-zero conditions; one memorable scene sees a shivering Fantine being physically hurled across cobblestones by police inspector Javert: "David [Oyelowo] got a bit carried away, and there were real bruises afterwards," says Lily with a grimace. "I thought, 'Well she's physically in pain, let's keep going.'
"I've never shot anything out of sequence like that but I'm so grateful because when we returned in the summer, knowing where we ended up, I got to amp up the romance. I wanted people to empathise with her as much as possible."
She flashes a smile. "Empathy," she says, "is everything."
Les Misérables premieres on BBC First on Foxtel and Fetch from March 10 at 8.30pm.
