Really excited here, I stumbled into "Jamaica's first locally produced horror film" on Tubi. Nefarious (2020, written and directed by Rhett S. Butler, not to be confused with several movies of the same name), is uneven in places, which is about what you'd expect from a self-taught filmmakers first film and low budget horror in general. However, if you're willing to cut it some slack for the rough spots, it's overall a really solid piece of film. A good deal of it is both beautiful and disturbing, particularly the outdoor filming, which always has a true to life feeling both in how the shots are handled and in the acting. It almost feels like the crew had to chose between lighting and sound rigged for indoors versus outdoors, and went for the latter. So that's all right, you get the swing of it and you'll get drawn into the world and lives of the characters. The opening shot in particular is immediately engaging. I'm sure there's more depths of classism to get into, with a couple more watches, and we can only hope to see more from Butler in the future. Til then, it's worth a watch purely for the sake of seeing something fully unique in the genre, and a brand new voice in its infancy.

The Walking Dead robbed us of having Michonne and Sasha as an awesome duo. But at least we know Danai and Sonequa have a genuine love for each other and beautiful sisterhood behind scenes.

What did you think of the new Candyman? I felt like making baby Anthony into the new Candyman was an interesting choice
Anon, you've no idea how excited I was when I saw this in my inbox. I could talk about Candyman, or horror in general, all day.
I enjoyed Candyman (2021), though I will say I enjoyed it better on my second watch than I did in the theaters and it was my fault. I went into wanting so badly to see Tony Todd. His charisma and presence on screen is everything that made the original so engaging. He was so invested in his character (which he talks about a lot in the documentary Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror). I say my fault because I shouldn't have had an expectation of the movie before I went to see it. I was only setting myself up for disappointment.
I will say that my biggest criticism of the movie is that it felt like two stories were being told and both were competing for space and time. I loved the choice to tie baby Anthony into the new Candyman. It was a good way to connect back to a film we know and love while also providing a way to tell a new story for a new generation. And it made sense to me. No one escapes Candyman, not even the baby who was saved at the end of the movie. It affected him. I always saw Candyman as being possessive of the things he wanted - he talks at length about his congregation. And with baby Anthony, I don't think it's any different. That is his son now. His progeny and his prodigy. His legacy in a way.
My only wish for this movie after seeing it was that it had been given two films to explore the story they wanted to tell.
Anthony's story would be the first movie where Yahya Abdul-Mateen II did an amazing job conveying this descent into obsession over legacy. I love the connection between him and the original Candyman with their artistic expression and this theme around legacy. What it means to be remembered. What it means to persist in a world that doesn't want to see you succeed. What it means to be affected by your past, both on a very literal level and a grander metaphorical level.
And then a second movie strictly for Teyonah Parris's character Brianna. All of her backstory with her dad and what it meant for her to watch her partner go through what he went through. For her to then begin her research into this urban legend that is no legend. It is real. I also selfishly want it so they can have some of those gothic romance vibes that were present in the first film. And I think both of those actors would be fantastic with it.
I'll leave you with this image: Brianna asleep on the couch. Her research is scattered around her. She's close to answer. A bee lands on her lips. She bats it away. And then Anthony/Candyman's fingers on her lips, lovingly and longingly tracing that familiar curve. She goes to bat it away again only she feels him. She wakes up, alone in their once shared apartment.

As we all know, I'm incapable of saying no to my sister, and so I end up agreeing to the most irritating shit. Tonight, I'm taking her, her kid, and 2 other people to the airport. At 3:45 am. Also pet-sitting for the next week is, apparently, included with the complimentary trip to/from the airport. As I learned in yesterday's novel-length text of instructions. So that's fun. (I also have to let her cleaning person in and thank fuck she finally has a cleaning person. Maybe I won't fear for my health every time I go in her house this time.)
Anyway, I'm also incapable of napping, unless I'm actively ill, so. Of course I'm going to stay up and end up going to bed at like 5 am. (Fortunately all I really have to do tomorrow is feed my sister's pets and wait for my kiln to cool. Oh, and I should send an email.)
Given the whole "3:45 am" thing, I picked something from the list that I know is longer, so here we are with an anthology.

Horror is fascinating. It's all of our cultural anxieties, all of our stuff just on the screen. All of those ugly things society doesn't acknowledge about itself. It's put there, clear as day on the screen, and they just wrap it up in a monster.

Blog #6 - The Final One
I truly can NOT believe that this is my last (required) blog post for my class, Sunken Place: Racism, Survival, and Black Horror Aesthetic. And I gotta say, my Professor saved the best for last. In Week 10 of our notoriously fast paced quarter terms, we had a Student Showcase of the various final projects us students turned in. Sharing was optional. It was split into two groups on two different days. Tuesday was reserved for showcasing student short films and Thursday was reserved for students to read excerpts of their short stories / essays.
And although Professor Due let us know, right from the get-go back in Week 1, that we were going to be amazed by the talent our fellow students had (and which I totally believed!) I honestly was not prepared for the creative projects the students came up with.
The student films were some of the most inventive, creative, short films I have ever seen. Honestly, truly. There was one about a fashion vampire. Who, while dreaming about her upcoming fashion show walk – actually sleepwalks and attacks people at night – all while being unawares. The film ends with breaking the fourth wall – with the Vampiress looking into the camera, blood and surprise etched on her face, and then quick cut to black. It was phenomenal! It also had really funny but subtle moments, like when she went to bed wearing a Red Cross Blood Drive tee-shirt. It was so good I’m still thinking about it. I think it would make for an interesting mini TV show or something. And the student had no previous writing/director experience – I Just Can’t!
My personal fave (though, my goodness, holy moly, were they all so frickin’ good), was called Black Out. And this was my fave for a variety of reasons – but it had to do with group projects – and every single student who has ever had to do a group project in university knows this is the real struggle and horror of college. It also had to do with racism and the writer/director/actor built their own lore that tied this horror with the horror of racism and the theme of revenge. And again, this was her first time making her own video. It’s. Just. In. Sane.
And we can’t forget the short stories! Holy cow! There was a mix of people that had written before (and even for some TV/Networks, so they had industry experience) but also new writers who had never written a horror short story before (or anything) and/or never read/shared their stories out loud before. And I am so glad that they did! There wasn’t a single story that I didn’t want to read in its entirety. As a voracious reader, I need published versions of these NOW. And again, we had around a handful of students share their stories and there was no overlap of ideas – just like with the short films. There were some common themes, though they were used differently (cautionary tale vs consequences vs historical, etc.), but they were all different. There were (essentially slave) Robots, Creepy Carnivals, Black Holes/The Void and Alternative Timelines, and Historical Horror.
I can not imagine even having an ounce of the creativity, originality, imagination, etc. that these individuals do. My professor was right, though I did not doubt it, I sure as heck did not know how talented these individuals were.
I am honored to have watched these films and heard these stories. I hope that everyone who shared/presented continues writing/directing/acting and most importantly – keep sharing.
One of the biggest takeaways of this class – especially as we near the end – is the state of Black Horror and its Future. Black Horror has come a long way – especially with the help of Jordan Peele and the massive success of Get Out, as many artists were inspired by this. TV show/film/novels, etc. would not have been able to be created without this piece of Black Horror genius. Not only is this now a major revenue producing genre of the industry but there are more and more marginalized voices reclaiming Blackness and Horror and the way they relate to each other.
Black Horror is in its Renaissance Era.
And if the voices of the videos I watched and the stories I heard this week are any indication of the future of Black Horror – there is nothing to fear.

Horror Noire shares a name with a documentary I talked about last year, and is pretty good but as the “next chapter in black horror” it doesn’t send me. Anthologies are always uneven and of course a lighter tone really helps, which may be why the final segment lands so well (and was chosen for that reason?)…..
