             standing at the partly opened  door of ‘devil may cry’ after having creaked it open,  he watches the reaction of the other.  and the question that followed suit.  it had been raining and his usually-slicked back style had fallen,  mimicking the current style his brother wore his hair as.  and in the dim light,  his features obscured,  he appeared like a ghost of the past. 

             from his view of the other,  he took note of the slicked-back hairstyle,  the well-put-together outfit,  and posture   —   it was a mirror of himself.  to say he wasn’t surprised would be half-hearted because he was  ;  on usually entering the shop,  he would usually be greeted by dante if the shop wasn't empty.  it wasn’t common to meet another  version  of himself.

             stepping in,  he keeps his distance,  but closes the door behind him.  the sound of rain silenced. as he stood there,  eyes examining the threshold of the building.  before making eye contact,  blue eyes shining behind silver hair  ;  appearing like a lit fire.  before it dulls,  diminishing into a light glow.

author’s note: it’s a little ooc/not canon compliant but it’s such a cute idea!!

though it was late, the lights of your bedroom filled the house. you sat in bed, reading a book that you’d randomly grabbed off of the shelf in the room. your eyes lazily moved over the pages, using the words as a way to pass the time rather than for your own interest.

you turned your head to look at the clock, it was 1:54 a.m. while it wasn’t unusual for jackson to return home late, it wasn’t usually this late. you sighed; eyes returning to the book that was held in your hands.

jackson had never told you the details of what he did for work. you were too innocent— too naive. he found that charming, though; he found your innocence adorable. he was too far gone, too attached to you— completely enveloped by your innocence. he didn’t want to break that.

your eyes had started to close as you slowly dozed off. your eyes snapped open when you heard the front door open downstairs, closing quickly. you heard his footsteps ascend the stairs and watched as he made his way into the bedroom.

“jackson-”

your words were cut off when you saw his face. it was covered in dark bruises, small cuts lining his cheek and dried blood around his nose. the area under one of his eyes was dark and bruised, and a small cut sat on his bottom lip.

“jackson?! what happened to you?”

you rushed to stand up to him, eyes scanning his face for more injury. he shrugged.

“caught a guy trying to break into my car is all, wrong place at the wrong time, i guess.”

“he got you pretty good, jackson.”

you ran your fingers over his bruised cheek.

“nothing i can’t handle, sweetheart.”

what appeared to be a smile formed on his lips. jackson reached a hand up to brush his thumb against your cheek. you were adorable when you were worried.

“let me help you get cleaned up. stay here.”

you walked off to the bathroom attached to the bedroom. sitting on the edge of the bed, jackson untied his shoes and kicked them off. he took off his blazer, laying it on the bed. he unbuttoned his shirt, then his pants, dragging them off.

you returned a few minutes later, a damp washcloth in one hand and a box of bandages in the other. jackson was on the edge of the bed, left in his undershirt and boxers.

“just sit still.”

“be gentle, please.”

jackson smiled, his words dripping with the imitation of worry.

you raised the washcloth to the small cuts you saw on his face. he winced slightly when the warmth of the washcloth touched the sensitive, bruised skin. after a few minutes, you pulled the washcloth away.

“looks better already.”

you smiled and applied small bandages to his cuts, careful to not hurt him.

“lay down, i’ll be back in a minute.”

you picked up the washcloth and box of bandages and returned them to the bathroom. you walked back out, climbing into bed next to jackson.

when he turned to wrap his arms around you, you stopped him.

“oh? what’s this?”

jackson looked at you, his blue eyes searching through the innocence in yours.

“gonna hold you tonight, rippner. i think you deserve it.”

jackson was usually the one in control, but sometimes he enjoyed when you took over for him. he accepted your embrace when you wrapped yourself around him.

“just be careful from now on, please.”

jackson smiled when he heard your mumbled words come from where your head laid against his chest. the pain in his face was numbed by your warmth, and in these moments, he swore he wanted to tell you everything.

Hello! I really enjoyed reading the latest chapter. Right when I was about to go to bed I remembered the email notification and I couldn't resist the urge to read it. Did I have a less than optimal amount of time sleeping that night? Oh absolutely so, quite tired in the morning I was. I don't regret it with a single atom in my being though, it was a great chapter.

One aspect I really love about the awiw and aaa fics is the sheer amount of thought and care being put into everything. including Sashannarcy. The characterization, progression, thoughts, feelings, it all makes Sashannarcy amazing. I love to just think about the interpersonal relationships between the girls. It's incredibly complex and I love it.

Anyway, I love it so much that I needed to make a meme about how the story beats of Marcy's lovelife makes me react and feel about the story and what could happen in future chapters.

You've probably seen this image. I've seen it many times. I have mixed feelings about it.

It's a funny image, and represents a good cause. It's usually posted by people who want to support fairer working conditions for game developers, and want to show support for smaller titles.

It's usually posted in contrast to something like Cyberpunk 2077, Watch Dogs: Legion, The Last of Us: Part II, or God of War: Ragnarok.

There's a part of me that cringes every time I see it, though. I imagine there may be other game developers who feel similarly.

I think the reflexive cringe comes from the phrase "shorter games with worse graphics." People being paid more to work less sounds great, tbh, and barring any sort of production pipeline blocking, I think most devs would be into that.

These are the thoughts that fly through my mind when I hear people say "I want shorter games with worse graphics."

Short compared to what?

Shorter than Elden Ring? Shorter than Hollow Knight? Short like Venba? Short like Celeste? How short could a AAA game be before, even despite posting this phrase, you'd find it unsatisfying or incomplete? How short could an indie game be before you don't consider it a "real game"? Games can be anything from Ulysses to a haiku, but it rarely seems like people are talking about the haiku style of games.

What does "worse graphics" mean?

I just can't imagine a world where "worse graphics" could possibly correlate to Hi-Fi Rush, Undertale, Hollow Knight, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, Celeste, Mario Odyssey, Wind Waker, A Short Hike, or Hades. Even though those are the types of games that I often see people use this meme in support of. Those games have incredible art that talented artists worked really really hard on. It feels like a bit of a sting to associate those beautiful games with the term "worse graphics." That phrasing, sadly, implies that photorealism is the bar by which all other games are compared.

Forever Games

Where do replayable games, like roguelikes, tycoons, crafting games, and farming sims land on the realm of "shorter games"? They're not inherently any shorter than a big AAA game, and they're designed to be replayable and to suck your time in. That can be great, but it also might be a treadmill that is not inherently any more honorable than a game trying to tell a linear story.

Are you really "not kidding"?

This meme has a very confident, smug energy and I think that tone invites this question: Do you REALLY want shorter games with worse graphics? I know this is going to depend on the individual lives of each human being who's ever reposted this meme, and it can never be truly answered, but it really begs the question of whether or not people REALLY DO WANT "shorter games with worse graphics." Because let me tell ya, there's a lot of shorter games with worse graphics right now and they ain't selling very well. Check the Steam reviews. Ask devs how many copies they sell on itch. There are many devs out there who make shorter games with worse graphics and no matter how many times people post this phrase, people don't seem to flock over to support those projects. And that sinking feeling of "oh, these folks don't mean the games that my friends and I post regularly on itch, they mean Hi-Fi Rush and Wind Waker" is a little bit demotivating, given the gusto with which this meme is posted. There are people whose whole careers hinge on the hope that there's an audience out there that wants "shorter games with worse graphics" and there doesn't seem to be an actual sea change that's helping those projects out. There is a treasure trove of games out on itch that you can play in between hyped releases, but most people's playing habits don't seem to shift.

Lastly...

...there are thousands of devs out there who work hard, collaborating with other devs and artists, to make their games the best they can be. Devs work hard to bring their artistic vision to God of War: Ragnarok or to Bomb Rush Cyberfunk or to experimental indies with intentionally-ragged art styles. Everyone is putting their heart into their art to make something that will connect with the player. Sometimes, this can be pulled off by 1 or 2 people. Sometimes, this will require hiring more onto the team. It's slightly dissonant to see people say they want to see "worse graphics" when you're trying to get a job in texturing or particle effects and want to deliver something your team is trying to push a boundary on. This is true in both small projects and big projects. Artists are putting their stamp on Horizon Forbidden West just as much as they're putting their stamp on Venba. There are artists looking for work in the indie space who want to make better and more beautiful "graphics."

Anyway, no disrespect to people who post this meme. I understand that it's a show of support and solidarity. I understand that it's just a joke. I know that it's not a big deal.

But I'd be lying if I said that these mixed feelings didn't flash through my mind every time I saw this hedgehog. Figured I would share them.

ohhh boy hate is a strong word but let's say that if I am on the fence bout a show and see that as one of the tags I am closing that tab and not looking back.

i was literally thinking about this yet again a few days ago like "do I actually hate that trope? I feel like I'm missing something, if it's done well maybe it could be good cause I don't like sad endings but they CAN be good so it should go for love triangles too, right?"

but my gosh I dislike them. I can only tolerate them when the main lead clearly has no interest and shows it and/or the pining one knows when to back down. bonus points if they become friends with the couple, thats super wholesome. it might all stem from the fact I don't like big conflict or that I hate seeing characters hurt from unrequited love or (ughhhhh) going out of their way to be annoying. like we could spend that screen time to develop the main relationship or tie some loose ends. no need to see two characters who like each other but don't act on it and then someone else swoops in to become the main lead, no wish to experience someone obsessing over their childhood friend who doesn't know how to establish boundaries, no desire for looking at two guys measuring dicks and being unnecessarily territorial (esp nasty when one of them is civil and the main guy is being a jerk) (this annoyed me in lbfad too and that's arguably one of the best done love triangles)

that being said, I'm sure it's a good trope, I have some beloved character trios who had to go through that arc. for example I did not enjoy it in Light on Me (I knowwww I know I'm the only one) but I didn't hate it in Hometown Cha Cha Cha (sml was a cutie)

I am thinking of shows I see way too much of on the dash but I realise there are very good reasons for them to be well liked. and it's actually not that they are overhyped - other shows aren't paid the same attention so it looks like these are being paid too much. it's just that we don't hype others as much, that's all. I cant say that shows I don't like as much as others do are overhyped when I can recognise there are objectively good parts of them so I won't list those (although I've got quite a few apparently pft)

Nightmares.

They're something the USBs warned them about. That and trauma. The little Coding had taken the time to scoure the internet for the meanings of those words.

Once it found out.. yeah, it made sense as to why the USBs would warn it.

Now, it lays at the foot of SMG4's bed, watching him closely. His USB had personally asked the code to keep an eye on him. Apparently SMG4 wasn't doing too hot.

It didn't blame him, in all honesty.

The cat-like code, after a few more minutes of watching the sleeping man, closed its eyes. It didn't need sleep, but it had grown accustomed to sleeping. To feel more connected.

It flicked its tail. With Mario in the room, everything would be fine. It didn't seem like the hero was that deep of a sleeper! Or maybe the code was.

Just as it starts to drift off to sleep..

"N-no.."

Its eyes snap open, and it looks at SMG4. He has an expression of pain on his face despite being asleep. Mario was still asleep. It seemed like he was a deep sleeper.

Slowly, the little coding rises from laying.

"N-no.. no, get away.." it watches with worry as his hands come up to his hair. It hesitates. It read conflicting things on how to deal with nightmares induced by trauma.

It reached out its paw before retracting it.

Did it even have the right to comfort him? They weren't even around when the original code was, it had no idea what it had been through.

"No..! S-stop! Le-let us go..!" as SMG4 pleads in his sleep, the little Coding quickly makes its way up the bed. It walks up to his chest and lays against it. And begins purr quiet loudly. It rubs its body against him, hoping to try and lull him out the nightmare.

It seems to work.

It watches as his hands stop gripping his hair and instead lower back to his sides. Well, one does. The other rests over the cat-like code.

It closes its eyes and continues to purr, keeping the nightmare at bay.

'I'll protect you,' it thinks. 'I'll protect you until my final stand.'

AAA thank you my beloved Rune, I appreciate your kindness as always <3 I'm doing well, how are you?

"13. describe your writing style."

I tend to describe my writing style as "punk rock for the literature world". Genre-wise, I can really vary, and even tone can fluctuate, but all my books aim to talk about some sociopolitical and cultural issues that affect the world right now from an explicitly leftist anarchist perspective. I also focus heavily on characters first and like tackling them from a perspective heavily informed by my real-life psychology studies and taking a very psychological angle with their behaviors and actions. There's also a bit of horror in everything I write, because the genre is my home and it's the one I owe my entire career here to <3

"18. how do what you look for in your own writing vs someone else’s coincide? how does your writing influence your reading?"

I don't enjoy a lot of escapism, much as I don't write it at all, and I look a lot for stories that have something important to say about humanity or the world. I particularly enjoy works that focus on the darker side of the human condition, much like my own writing, and I will always enjoy a transgressive and genuinely boundary-pushing work that makes you think about yourself and your own beliefs. Literature like that, that makes me question myself, often influences my own writing and the topics I broach, so my writing and my reading are essentially in a constant give-and-take relationship with each other.

"21. what are the most important facets of creating a character, to you?"

I went over this in another post, but essentially: I believe characters work best when viewed from the angle of trying to write a "person" and not "fiction". I take a lot from my studies of psychology to round out my characters and make them feel like real people, taking in account the affects of environment and interpersonal relationships on their mindsets. I hate concepts like "good and evil" that are too simple to work in real life, and I like to play with those ideas in my stories by deconstructing them in my characters. The long and short of it is that I just watch and study real people, and use my observations to inform my writing.

While she's not really innocent, her naivety and obliviousness to certain things makes her seem like she is.

>Otoha is a bit of a dreamer so she believes in it to some extent. She believes that her meeting Matsu was fate since she really didn't plan on joining the Kira case until the late decision when she got bored.

Meadow Lychnis: how witty are they?

>Otoha is somewhat of a witty person, quickly making remarks and jabs and puns here and there with the right timing. Her confidence and openness about things along with her being up to date with the latest trends/memes, she often makes witty responses.

I can definitely see him as someone who will get caught up in whatever he's doing and tearing him away from said activity is hard- so much so that he has had an accident while on an operative's mission or just at a bar (rare but get anyone skunked enough-)

Oh he totally can laugh an accident off, especially if it happens infront of others- like, sure he's embarrassed as all hell but he and whoever he's with has definitely been covered in far worse than piss.

Personally I dont see him as getting angry over having an accident, for a few moments he'll feel upset with not being able to hold it long than he had initially thought but, he's also just human so he tries to not beat himself up too much over it

Oh hec- I like to headcanon it as a running joke amounst the new vault hunters over Zane's age and there have been cheeky/joking remarks to "get grandpa depends" but it doesnt really go past that (which, lowkey relief to Zane😂)

Zane is pretty good at mapping out his missions, knowing the best places of infiltrating but, locating washrooms is a different story, he'll just hope he'll walk past one while wandering around (which, 98% of the time works, ofc if it's a place with an actual washroom- or outhouses)
