Are you still watching HotD? The first 6 episodes are interesting but I don’t feel like watching anymore. The characters in the Dance era weren’t all that interesting to me when I read TWOIAF and Fire and Blood, and this show hasn’t changed my mind on that. That said, what do you think of the reveal that the “Song of Ice and Fire” was actually a prophetic dream Aegon the Conqueror had?

I didn’t watch last night’s episode, but I’m kind of having the opposite experience? I didn’t like the first two episodes. They were too grim and gross and presenting this simple and reductive narrative of all these noble girls being forced into arranged marriages and being complete agent-less victims. But now that Rhaenyra and Alicent are older, I think it’s getting way more complicated and interesting. I love Rhaenyra and Laenor’s relationship for example. It’s basically the relationship I wrote for Dany and Willas in Crow Flies, and I’m into it. Although I still just feel like this is a placeholder for what I really want, which is to read Winds of Winter.

In terms of the “Song of Ice and Fire” reveal, I actually kind of hate it? I think it’s really lazy storytelling. We knew that Rhaegar was obsessed with prophecy. I think it would have been way more interesting if that prophecy was something that developed once the Targs came over and were integrating into Westerosi culture. Think of the dramatic possibilities if Viserys and Rhaenyra knew a witch in Westeros who spoke of an old prophecy from the time of the first men, and the show dramatized them figuring out that it referred to them and their destiny. It could have been cool, but Aegon having a dream just seems like lazy retconning to me.

shadow (2018) dir. zhang yimou was soooooo insane btw. i love how he uses color it's literally like. in contrast to hero (2002) and house of flying daggers (2004) which were very similar in color palette and the usage/satire of wuxing, shadow tells a story because it's almost ENTIRELY shot in black and white but with the very important splashes of red (blood, skin, desire--) to keep juuuust that bit of color in. he's not one of my fave directors but when it comes to color he's definitely at the top of the list
