I think that after coming back from the dead (waking up) Monomon would want her mask back, so Quirrel asked Mask Maker for a replica. I'm assuming she's alive since one doesn't need to kill the dreamers for the Godhome ending.

Also you said that you'd keep all the ghosts etc dead, and that's fine. BUT.

What if the Shamans were ghosts.

The text is probably illegible so. I think the snails from Soul Sanctum and Queen's Gardens are actually father and daughter. I mean, I think it'd fit. Similar tempers and all. Like father like daughter, amiright?

I still have no idea who the snail from Resting Grounds could be tho.

Completely unrelated but I like to think that with enough lifeblood even ressurrection is possible. Let's take Markoth for example since we've seen his corpse. With enough lifeblood one could bring him back to the world of the living.

Wow I guess it turned into a headcanon dump huh. Oh well. Sorry for bothering you once again. I'd draw more stuff but this already took long enough.

How I think aging works in the Hollow Knight Universe

So essentially, this is how I see aging in the Hollow Knight universe: The stronger a being’s mind power/strength, the longer its lifespan. 

Take this, for example: How would someone like Hornet have been born around the time the infection was first sealed still be/act younger than someone like Elderbug, who only ever saw Hallownest with its gates closed? Hornet would have a much stronger mind strength as she is the daughter of the Pale King, A LITERAL GOD. Elderbug, however, would have much less of a mind power considering the fact that he doesn’t venture down into Hallownest for fear of the infection, and the fact that he is only a common bug by Hallownest’s terms. 

Other Gods of Hallownest also prove a point for this claim. The fact that higher beings (god-like individuals with most likely a strong mind-power) like the White Lady and Unn are still alive yet other common bugs have died, many of old age? 

Although the fact can be disproven by the fact that most of the being’s I’ve mentioned so far are gods, other beings such as Mask Maker have most likely been at their work for a long time (around before Hallownest’s Collapse) and still have not died of old age.

I've kind of rambled on abt AUs and this specific one and such because I'm tired, but I'll put that under the cut.

honestly i was very close to putting this project in particular down because - well, it is a bit indulgent! i am satisfied with how kai's story ends in-game, but i still wondered specifically how his dynamics with other characters would form if he was alive. this was especially important to me because ... we don't get to see much of sara's reaction! which is a shame! because she's the only person that really had any connection with him prior to the death game, and i would've liked to see her process it more.

BUT I've gone on. my point here was: i almost had to put it down because if sara and kai were to begin to reconcile, then kai would end up filling in the place that nao currently takes (specifically as a source of support and not wanting sara to burden herself) and it would be a disservice to both of their characters. and i didn't want that!!!

part of why chapter two hits so hard for me is because of the dynamic between sara and nao after the events of chapter one. they both admire the other for being strong, and try their best to support each other after the losses they endured. in order to keep this, i needed to add other factors to the story that would keep kai from disrupting it - beyond the fact that he wouldn't wish to make her uncomfortable. remedying this was an issue i had for a long time, but because it's been in the background for a while, i've found an alternative way to keep the weight of sou's antagonism, nao's support, and kai having a strong presence in the story without directly interacting with sara herself as often as others do. i could go into that but i am sleepy and this is getting long aghsms

but yeah!!! something i really appreciate about the original game is how these themes (especially of humanity and healing/grieving) are conveyed through the characters and their relation with each other (even in this short time) and in order to recreate the feeling of these satisfying arcs, you'd have to figure out why the original ones were put there at all! which usually ties into the overarching message and...idk aghsms dissecting this stuff is really fun for me, regardless of whether or not I'm trying to recreate it with stuff like this! but it really does help, especially with the relatively short time we have with the characters in this situation, to make it feel complete and fit in line with the impact the game provides without like...completely ripping the same few lines for its use? if that makes sense? like, understanding why this works is a key part to making the au feel complete and not just. shallow...? which sounds a little harsh, and i don't intend for it to be, because those can still be enjoyable! but it's just not my type of story???

surprisingly! i don't really like aus, generally. at least not making them myself. the premises are usually cool! I'll read a few on occasion. but i tend to be really thorough when i write things, and that's part of why my original story stuff has taken so long [alongside the entire. plot revamp OTL] too. i feel the need to pick apart every bit and make sure it's reasoned out properly, which is why a lot of my other wips tend to be left behind too...! if i can't figure out when this would take place, and it's not an easy fix to readjust to be compliant with the timeline, I'll usually discard it or completely rewrite it later on. it's not necessarily a good habit, but it's how i tend to work when it comes to writing!

erm. this was a lot afhsms but my main point is that...it really does mean a lot to me when the effort is actually recognized and i really do hope when i finish this project that it does work well and that I'm able to get the idea across as I've meant to!!! I really love yttd as it stands and i just hope this theoretical ends up feeling as put together and satisfying as most of the game has been so far! (just...hesitantly looking at ch3 ngl agbsms)

The Mask Maker's dialogue from Hollow Knight seriously makes me want to create a game with masks and faces as its general theme.

"Is it mask or face upon the creature? In Hallownest, a difficult thing it can be to decipher.

A mask! A face! Does it need one? Does it not? To define. To focus. To exist.

It sees the face beneath! Or could it just be another mask?

To change a face; to conceal it fully within another... A powerful protection that is, but one with sad consequence. The original mind is destroyed, though those of striking will may still retain a sliver of that concealed self."

raaah, i just need them happy. Also the butterflies + pupils can appear & disappear at will 💥💥 !! ,, Anyways AU explanation when you click read more!!

Okay, Explaining this silly lil "AU" ,, It takes place after the Embrace the Void ending! Ghost leaves godtamer's body, and willingly turns back into a shade. Although now maskless, Ez fix Hornet just requests the mask maker make it a new one (which he gladly does, a nice exact replica of it's old one)

Quirrel is alive!! He sat at the blue lake for awhile, entirely unaware of what was happening until he smelt the air clear from the infection. He's okay guys..... ,, A now fixed Ghost (being the sweetheart it is) brings Quirrel lifeblood as a gift for keeping it company!! He does end up drinking it after a bit of hesitation but he does accept the offer, feeling better after due to lifeblood's healing properties.

As for Hollow, They too were given lifeblood, Although there wasn't enough to fully bring them back to pure health, It did do wonders clearing their body of the harmful stuff the infection had caused, Giving them enough strength to at most reform their arm (With the help of Ghost) !! Although they spend most of their time resting or practicing w/ Ghost, Teaching it all they know. Ghost & Hollow are never seen apart from this point on btw!!

However, Problems of course rise, Nothing is ever perfect.

Ghost still at heart is the Shade lord, making the situation with keeping it's form a bit harder than it used to be. Under extreme stress it does start to transform back into the Shade lord, which is why Hollow & Quirrel often stay around it to keep it calm & unharmed. Just don't let it have a bad day & everything should be fine :o3... Also Ghost uses it/he (mainly it) in this AU bc.. GHOST IS LITERALLY ME!!!! 💥 (( Hollow uses they/it ))

Erm... This """"AU"""" is mainly just a comfort AU so thats why it's so happy yay yippee (besides ghost being more unstable)!!!! Bc the brain needed a comfy hollow knight au (can you tell i heart lifeblood & wish it was expanded on more...)

i've been thinking about hk recently... specifically about masks. i've been thinking specifically about the mask maker and pk and the vessels. i honestly havent brushed up on the lore in years so i dont remember if we were ever told about how vessels were specifically created by hand by pk and then given void... im specifically curious about how thk grew up when no other vessels did. i have to think that another body was created for them when they were decided to be the one fit for the job. recently i was doodling hornet and i was rthinking how i like when people add their own design elements to canon designs since they're so simple. so i like to think that hornet would have more pairs of false eyes engraved on her mask to resemble herrah and the weavers. i also like to wonder that the mask maker's masks have a handmade quality to them. hand painted and imperfect. but the masks pk creates would be really meticulously made. maybe carefully engraved or on the contrary polished to perfection. but once again i havent brushed up on the lore so im just thinking thoughts

whos your fav bug from bug game and why?

!!! My first ever ask :D

It's rlly hard to pick a favorite because unfortunately I really do love all of em, but maybe I could list a few?

First bug I fell in love with was Elderbug!! I remember trying to learn how to speedrun the game and in the video I was watching, the dude ran past Elderbug; I always talked to him so I never saw what happened if you walked past without saying anything and it made me so sad lol

He's a sweet old guy, first guy you meet and I love him lots. I look forward to one day being able to give him the delicate flower myself because his dialogue from it is rlly sweet :')

Another early favorite (of course) was Quirrel!! I still love him w all my heart, mainly because he's the one NPC friend you see frequently throughout most of a playthrough. Some of the hk fics I've read made me love him a little more, and through him I was able to learn more about Monomon and The Archives!

Monomon is probably my favorite dreamer, although I think Herrah is p cool too. I love seeing fan designs of Herrah especially.

At the moment I obsess the most over THK because I'm able to project a lot on that poor broken vessel (sorry not sorry) but also because I love seeing fan works of it being alive n happy.

Honorable mentions include: Cloth, Dung Defender, Hornet, Cornifer, Lemm, Hive Knight, Iselda, Sly, Mask Maker, and Bardoon!! (I really meant it when I said I love pretty much all of them LMAO)

Ok here's my hk character designs

Ghost

I decided in the fictional scenarios I create with these character designs (basically just hollow knight but with these character designs) the ghost can talk, but only because it's the void in them talking. If a Shade is released, they're silent.

Hornet

The scar is from one of the Vessels she fought (or Vespa if the "daughter of three queens" thing still exists), the Needle and its attached string are from the Weavers and the mask was a gift from the White Lady.

The Hollow Knight/Pure Vessel

The mask given by the Pale King shortly before being sealed in the Black Egg. When they got infected it got stuck to their face.

Btw in this masks used by most bugs are purely cosmetic, but the ones used by the vessels and hornet are used for violence related purposes. They redirect damage into the mask. Mask shards are only used to make masks stronger.

If mask maker makes the masks for the vessels or is just insane is currently unknown.
