NWSL Challenge Cup Thoughts: Week 1, West
Part 2 of my general ramblings on the NWSL, this time for the Western division.
Expected Final Standings:
OL Reign
Portland Thorns
Angel City
San Diego Wave
General Thoughts:
The Western group might be the hardest to make predictions about, given that both of the expansion teams are in this group. Although I think both Angel City and the Wave are in better shape than previous expansion teams have been, I think it's unlikely that either of them will come together quickly enough to make a big push here. OL Reign had almost too many top tier players to make the most of them last year, but they seem to have a great balance of players all over the field now, so I think they will win this group, with the Thorns coming in second despite their own significant offseason shakeups.
After looking through the team-by-team breakdowns, interesting to see that the biggest question marks here tend to be in the midfield, although some of that is just my own unfamiliarity with some of the players on the expansion teams.
Team-by-Team Breakdown:
Reign
Despite losing three starters in Eugenie Le Sommer, Dzenifer Maroszán, and Sarah Bouhaddi at the end of their loans from Lyon, the Reign should still be in pretty good shape for this season. They also traded away (or lost in the expansion draft) a handful of players who were not getting many minutes, while picking up defensive player Phoebe McClernon, midfielder Nikki Stanton, and forward Veronica Latsko.
They still have most of the roster that got them to last year's semi-finals, including Alanna Cook, Quinn, Rose Lavelle, Jess Fishlock, Sofia Huerta, and Bethany Balcer, and between the newly-acquired players and Ally Watt's recovery from an essentially season-long injury, they should be able to make up for most of their losses just fine. The only area of concern is at goalkeeper - while their apparent starter, Phallon Tullis-Joyce, has a couple of years of experience in the French league and seems to have been solid during preseason games, she has significantly less experience than Bouhaddi, and both backups are fresh out of college.
Expected starters: Tullis-Joyce; Barnes, Hiatt, Cook, Huerta; Quinn, Fishlock, Lavelle; King, Watt, Balcer
Thorns
The Thorns have quietly undergone some major changes in the offseason - although given how spread out they were, it's easy to forget that this will be a significantly different team than the one that won the shield last year. First of all, their long-time head coach, Mark Parsons, departed the team at the end of the season to coach the Dutch national team. Crystal Dunn will be out for at least the Challenge Cup and the beginning of the regular season, as she is pregnant and due in May; Lindsey Horan is on loan to Lyon; Angela Salem retired; Simone Charley and Tyler Lussi were traded to Angel City; Christen Westphal was taken by the Wave in the expansion draft; and Becky Sauerbrunn will be out at least for the Challenge Cup following surgery to her knee.
The Thorns haven't added many pieces in the offseason - Hina Sugita of Japan and a couple of draft picks - but the Thorns had enough depth that they are probably still in decent shape for both the Challenge cup and the regular season. If there is an area of concern for them, it is the midfield - three of their four usual starters from last season (Dunn, Horan, and Salem) are not with the team now (the fourth, Rocky Rodriguez, is out for the first week, but it's unclear how long term that injury is). The Thorns had done plenty of rotation in that area last season, and with last year's bench players now having some experience under their belt, they should be ok even there, particularly if Rodriguez is able to return to playing quickly.
Expected starters: Bixby; Klingenberg, Menges, Hubly, Nally; Kuikka, Ryan, Coffey; Smith, Weaver, Sinclair
Angel City
Angel City made a pretty big statement with their first-ever signing - Christen Press, months before last season was even over - and since then they have put together what seems to be a pretty solid group through trades within the NWSL and signings from other leagues. However, while they should be too new of a team to be suffering serious losses to their roster already, they have gotten a couple of major injuries already - Paige Nielsen had to have a rib removed a few weeks ago, and Sarah Gorden underwent surgery on her knee. It's not clear how long either player will be out, but I think it's unlikely we will see them in the Challenge Cup. Possibly in response to this, Angel City did made one more trade last week, getting Madison Hammond from the Reign - with the other pieces they have already, that's probably enough to shore up their defense for now.
With a couple of exceptions, most of Angel City's midfielders are new to the NWSL, so it's difficult to predict who will be starting there or how well they will gel with the rest of the team. The attackers, on the other hand, are generally NWSL veterans and most of them are very solid players - Press is outstanding, of course, but they also have former Thorns Simone Charley and Tyler Lussi, as well as Jasmyne Spencer (most recently with the Dash, and with the Reign before that) as well as Japanese player Jun Endo. As long as their midfield comes together, Angel City shouldn't have too much trouble scoring goals.
Expected starters: Haračić; Hammond, Gilles, Swaby, Riley; Weatherholt, Ferrer van Ginkel, McCaskill; Press, Spencer, Charley
Wave
The Wave took a little longer to start making (or at least announcing) its signings, but it ultimately did add several major players to its roster, including Abby Dahlkemper, Kailen Sheridan, and Alex Morgan. They relied a little more heavily on the college draft and on signings from abroad than Angel City did, but they do have a few NWSL veterans on their roster as well, including outside backs Tegan McGrady and Christen Westphal.
The biggest question mark on their roster is in their midfield - while they have six midfielders listed, at least three of them were playing either as forwards or as defenders last season, and it is additionally unclear whether Emily van Egmond has actually made it to training camp yet. While the defense is really solid, there are also some questions about the forward line - they have several forwards over thirty, a few rookies, and not much in between.
Expected starters: Sheridan; McGrady, Dahlkemper, Girma, Westphal; McNabb, Kornieck, Johnson; Ali, Turnbow, Morgan

I think the Reign will win, and my guess on a scoreline would be 2-1 - I think it will be close, but the Reign will get a couple of goals in.
Angel City vs. Wave (9:00, 3/19):
I'm not really sure what to expect here, other than for the ball to spend most of its time in Angel City's attacking half. Despite the Wave's outstanding defensive line, I would probably guess that Angel City gets one through on them, and wins 1-0.
