Iran: They brought a paramilitary man to instill fear at a girls' school and deter girls from protesting, but it epically backfired
Iran - Fear no more: For days now the revolt against the Iranian regime, has spread to the universities and schools, following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurd, that died on 16 September 2022 after three days in a coma, after her violent arrest by the notorious "morality police" for allegedly infringing hijab rules amid Iranian crackdown on women’s dress.
According to @1500tasvir on Twitter, this is the moment of defiance against the regime's rule, at a girls' school, where a Basij (militia force charged with the task of internal security and suppression of anti-government demonstrations) has been called by the school's officials to instil fear and discourage the pupils from protesting. The girls welcomed the speaker by taking off their headscarves and chanting "get lost, Basiji".
“Say to the believing men that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts; that is purer for them; surely Allah is Aware of what they do.” (24:30)
“And say to the believing women that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts and do not display their ornaments except what appears thereof, and let them wear their head-coverings (khumur) over their bosoms, and not display their ornaments except to their husbands or their fathers, or the fathers of their husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or those whom their right hands possess, or the male servants not having need (of women), or the children who have not attained knowledge of what is hidden of women; and let them not strike their feet so that what they hide of their ornaments may be known; and turn to Allah all of you, O believers! so that you may be successful.” (24:31)
“O Prophet! say to your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers that they let down upon them their over-garments (jalabib); this will be more proper, that they may be known, and thus they will not be given trouble; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” (33:59)
Hmmm... tough question. I love a good abaya, but I usually wear those to the masjid only. I'm more street style anywhere else. My go-to outfit is a cute flowy top and a maxi skirt, or a top and some loose pants when I go to fencing class.
The word hijab is a general term for modest Muslim dress and applies to scarves that cover the hair and neck. This type of scarf is the head covering worn by some Moroccan women.
