I watched James Somerton's video when his channel was just starting, where he copied my favorite documentary (The Celluloid Closet) word for word- including saying Gore Vidal's words with Gore Vidal's affect. I have most of that documentary memorized because it was my sleep crutch for years. So, I knew he was a plaigiarist, but I didn't say anything, because I was afraid what happened to that woman who did challenge him would happen to me. The one who didn't want anything about her identity associated with the hhbomberguy video essay because of the trauma. I don't have that kind of energy or courage anymore, to get involved in disputes that don't directly affect me. So I now live in a world where I'm the type of person who doesn't alert or warn others thanks to James Somerton. Caveat Emptor everybody.

I had a weird dream last night that Pixar released Toy Story 5 as an existential post-apocalyptic story.
So I had a dream where Toy Story 5 was out and I was watching it.
The premise was that it took place in a post-apocalyptic world. In my dream specifically, it took place in the same world as The Last of Us (the dream started with me playing as Ellie from TLOU2 before it transitioned away from her to go to Woody and co. So yeah, I dreamed that Toy Story 5 and The Last of Us had a crossover) so most of humanity was wiped out by the Cordyceps Mushroom Zombies. So Woody and co had to deal with the fact they were now living in a world where there was almost no demand for toys. People were more focused on trying to survive. Kids weren’t exactly running out to buy toys. What few toys that did have owners were usually small teddy bears so they couldn’t even bring their other toy friends with their new owners.
The toys at least were safe from the Infected. The Infected ignored the toys since they weren’t people nor could the toys be infected themselves. But they could still have spores stuck to them and risk carrying the infections if they weren’t properly cleaned which was becoming harder as soap, running water and wipes were becoming more rare.
One of the major scenes I remember from my dream was that Woody and Co were held up in a mall that was long since overrun by Infected (that walked around the toys and ignored them). The toy squad couldn’t really go anywhere else since they had no way of knowing where else they could go and they were discussing their options. Woody really wanted to go out and find Andy just to make sure he was safe and was even willing to break their secret that toys were secretly alive just to be able to try and “protect Andy”. Perhaps they could even reveal their secret to the world as a way to show humans they could help them somehow as they could monitor Infected locations and report back without being infected themselves. Buzz was warning against it. Saying that they didn’t even know where Andy is or if he’s even alive. Plus, since they already have been safely living in this mall with the infected for so long, they are likely carrying spores that they haven’t washed off yet. Making them a hazard to any humans they do come across. Plus, since this is the apocalypse, even if they manage to find a human to tell their secret to, it’s unlikely the human would trust them since they’d be paranoid from constantly having to deal with infected and probably attack the toys on sight. And even if they could somehow properly convince a human they were alive and friendly, the lack of internet means others won’t even know about it.
The squad then start to feel depressed since they really have no purpose in life anymore. They can’t even go find another owner since even if they’d do, they’d probably be separated. And that is if they don’t accidentally carry spores around.
Sarge offers they at least help humans from behind the scenes. Like, they scout out areas where Infected are and leave behind notes and warnings to help other humans. So at least humans are more likely to survive. So hopefully, after many years, things can go back to some semblance of normal and later toys may have a life worth living. The squad reluctantly accepts because there isn’t anything else they can do anyway but have no confidence that it will actually work and are just distracting themselves doing something productive to trick themselves into thinking they have a purpose.

I don’t remember what happens next in the film. But I remember I was watching an HHbomberguy video on Toy Story 5. And he said the film is essentially a critique of how capitalism created a world where we buy products that have no value or purpose once a catastrophe happens no matter their quality or potential. Like, even if it wasn’t a zombie apocalypse or toys, imagine that your gaming PC probably won’t be useful when the climate crisis makes it too hot to play games or knocks out the power. Even if your PC was sentient and wanted to help you, it likely couldn’t. That our society isn’t really prepared to consider the future and will continue to rely on entertainment as a distraction until it is too late to do anything about it.

How I feel about the reactions towards James Somerton vs the Internet controversy:
There’s a habit that people have of deflecting when a creator or celebrity gets revealed as a creep, or they mess up in some way that’s harmful. One of the main ways that they do this is by uplifting their own celebrity fave through some version of “stan ____ for clear skin” or “see, if you stanned _____, you wouldn’t have this problem because they’re unproblematic.” Sometimes they even drop lists of supposedly “unproblematic” creators in a given fandom or genre as if to say, “I was able to spot the bad person before you guys did… follow these good people instead.”
However, that’s not how any of that works. When people meet valid criticisms of a celebrity — or news that the public figure has committed crimes or harmed others — with a “Follow this unproblematic person instead” response, it glosses over the fact that we don’t actually know who people are online. A public figure who overshares on their YouTube channel might seem like one of your closest friends thanks to the magic of the parasocial relationship, but they’re all functionally strangers. We don’t know what they’re really like because we’re only seeing what they choose to show us.

I think the one thing that annoys me about 'dog' culture is how easily commonly repeated words used in training will get twisted by the greater public into something unintended, to the point that the words kinda....don't make sense anymore. IE -- 'my dog is reactive' in which reactivity is a particular phenomenom about a particular dogs behavior has been twisted to mean anything about a dogs poor behavior with no further deep dive. Your dog who wants to lunge at and attack other dogs is 'dog reactive', sure, but they're also dangerous and aggressive.
This includes other things like the idea about 'roach back shepherds' vs 'straight back' or how now people constantly parrot 'your dog needs a job' without a further understanding that even the most jacked, work driven border collie needs to be taught to settle when needed.

man if james somerton really did off himself that sucks mostly because hhbomberguy would almost definitely blame himself, like other people on twitter are already blaming him. if he wants to kill himself for getting rightfully criticized that’s his decision, a stupid one but still his, but he’s pretty much taking hhbomberguy, who’d probably live with immense guilt forever, down with him. what a sick bitch he is

Apparently people a few very loud people are going around saying that hhbomberguy's RWBY vid are responsible for RWBY needing to be asked to get greenlit.
It's funny, but also kinda disturbing how much people are treating this as a personal attack on Monty and his friends.
Yeah, I’ve seen some of those posts as well as RWDE reactions to the posts. As you say, it’s important to keep in mind that this is a small subset of the fandom that is not only vocal in-and-of-itself but, more significantly, is saying stuff that gets traction. The more wild the take, the more individual blogs want to react to it (myself included right now!), the more you see it, the more prevalent it seems... but in reality it’s just a couple individuals saying it. I’d also hazard a guess that 99% of their support is just that: supporting someone you follow, whose views you generally like, and the vague anti-RWDE stance that the fandom enjoys indulging in. If you took each person out of the Internet Social Pressure Machine of Instant Gratification (aka I press one heart button and instantly I’ve got some social clout. No reason to think about what precisely I’m agreeing with) and asked them if they really believe one video by one guy online has decimated a series sitting within Warner Bros... I’d hope they’d say “No.”
For anyone who does truly believe that, yeah, it’s ridiculous. What amuses me though is how thoroughly the argument disses RWBY. I mean, we know a YouTube video isn’t responsible for #greenlightvol10, but if someone thinks it is that’s probably a popularity perspective. Meaning, the presumed logic is that someone said RWBY is bad, people believed him, stopped watching, and now the show struggles. That’s a chain of events that implies either:
a) RWBY is bad in a number of ways and people have decided they don’t want to give the show their time/money as a result. b) Hbomberguy is lying (the argument most of these posts make) and so many fans took him at his word, with RWBY unable to persuade them otherwise. The show they originally loved wasn’t good enough for them to stick with once an internet stranger said, ‘Thing you like bad.’ The accolades and praise of friends wasn’t enough to convince new viewers to give it a try because one (1) voice said otherwise. The combined total of RWBY - six seasons worth at the time - couldn’t withstand two and a half hours of criticism; it’s combined worth couldn’t weather one guy’s opinion lasting the length of a film.
So if you believe he’s responsible for RWBY’s current struggles then, sorry, but RWBY doesn’t come out looking too good. Either Hbomberguy merely revealed what’s always been there and RWBY is now reaping its writing + production problems, or Hbomberguy lied for two hours and RWBY wasn’t a good enough show to recover from that staggeringly low hurdle.
Or, you know, the greenlighting of new seasons has nothing to do with someone posting one critical video in an age where every fandom of significant size has more critical videos than you can shake a stick at. Engagement shouldn’t be overlooked as a factor, but it’s far from the only factor and, even if it was, one fan does not have the power to sway an entire community like that. Especially if the show is good enough that fans have no reason to question its quality in the first place.
