252. Madeleine Simon- HeartQuest #2: Talisman of Valdegarde (1983)

The second in the 6 book HeartQuest series of adventure/romance gamebooks set in the D&D world (no specific campaign setting, though), this volume tells the story of Gwynne, an apprentice Druid whose sister gets kidnapped by a troll right as the book starts and must find a way to save her. In the process she can find love and also discover the hidden truth about her family.

This is actually quite a good book, reading through it today it felt a bit on rails, with two clear paths, but this also means that each path is a bit longer than usual, I played the path of joining the elf Bard Neil, which eventually develops into a romance. However, there are moments of real stress here, as some of Neil's actions start being a bit suspicious and you don't get many options to test him or run away from him. There was a bit in there that I was afraid for Gwynne's safety. As I ended the book with a supposed happy ending I am still a bit worried about her.

There are some interesting side-characters here, like a Mimic guardian as well as artefacts, like a strange necklace and wand as well as some magical goblet that you discover in the dungeons. A really engaging book, aimed at a teen girl audience but which is actually fun for anyone who is into gamebooks. A bit hard to find but worth the effort for a D&D gamebook series that was much less well known or successful than the Endless Quest series.

Back in 1982, TSR launched a series of Dungeons & Dragons-based interactive novels called Endless Quest. Aimed at children, they were an immediate success. In 1983, they followed up with HeartQuest, which introduced romance into the formula and courted women readers. It was a dismal failure. Why? The “HeartQuest” books were a series of choose your own adventure books set in the Dungeons and Dragons world, published by TSR, that were romance themed and aimed at girls.

They wanted to make choose your own adventures to sell D&D stuff to the romance crowd. The books were not successful, but they did have some great art by Larry Elmore.

DJ was blown away by the city. He had just arrived in South Korea the day before and he had immediately been grateful that he didn’t need to sleep like a human. There would be no way he could see all the country had to offer otherwise. He had been more places than he could count, but Seoul was truly breathtaking.

He was wandering the streets, glancing through the guide book he had found abandoned on a train seat. There were so many places he was eager to visit, and the book included some helpful phrases in Korean which, thanks to his advanced learning algorithms, he was memorizing quickly. If only he had also found an English to Korean dictionary, then he’d be perfectly set to explore. As it was, he was just planning on picking up what he could of the language as he wandered. Just one of the many upsides to being an android.

He was wondering how he could get to Gyeongbokgung palace and looked up from his book once again to get his bearings. A flash in the crowd caught his eye as a phone falling from the pocket of a young man caught the light of the setting sun. It hit the ground, but the owner continued walking, seemingly unaware of its absence. DJ picked up the device and looked around for the man it belonged to. He saw him, but his form was quickly being swallowed by the shuffling throng of people. Uh oh. Better catch up to him before he was gone forever.

DJ took off at a jog, trying to navigate the crowd on the sidewalk without accidentally shoving anyone into the street. He wasn’t able to move very fast like this. He began calling out to the young man.

“Excuse me! Hey! You! Sir with the bleached hair! Please stop! I have your phone! Sillyehabnida!” He called out the Korean word for ‘excuse me.’ His pronunciation was atrocious, he was sure, as it was a word he had only read from the book and hadn’t actually heard. He just had to get the stranger’s attention somehow!🔌

Oh. Maybe that was a bad thing to mention. Skyler definitely noticed the change in Jung’s posture, brows furrowing for a moment. Did he not like dogs? No... It was probably a fear. Most likely a fear, judging from his friend’s tone.

The brunette peered over the edge of the balcony, shrugging lightly. “Yeah, it was probably just the wind,” he assured Jung, casting a grin towards the other. “It sounds a lot like a howl inbetween the buildings, doesn’t it?” If it was the wind, then they didn’t have anything to fear.

Well, except for maybe being blown off of the building.

“Even if it wasn’t, I’d protect you! Nothing’ll get past me...!”

The honest truth was that Echo really missed playing video games. He missed it almost as much as he missed reading. Sometimes he would just listen to Lets Plays but he also occasionally went to the arcade to listen to others enjoying themselves. He had really liked arcades Before and he missed being able to participate. But this was enough...he could enjoy others having fun at least. The sound of life and laughter set him at ease even if the amount of people made him a little uneasy.

Though with so many people in such close contact he had a little trouble navigating around them. Though there was one game in particular that Echo enjoyed playing that he did not actually need his sight for. He did not know the name of it or what it actually looked like but he could play it without sight since it was a rhythm game. It would give different little sound queues and Echo would be able to just tap the correct buttons in succession. He missed his rpgs and dating sims but this was fun as well.

Although Echo managed to make the ultimate high score on the game since it was the only game he could play.

262. Madeleine Simon (cover by Larry Elmore, interior art by Jim Holloway) - HeartQuest #4: Isle of Illusion (1983)

First thing that jumps out when looking at this, the fourth in the HeartQuest series, is just how familiar the main character on the cover looks, from the face and hair to the design of the armor, this looks exactly like Laurana Kanan from the Dragonlance novels and modules. This is only natural, after all the modules and the novel Dragons of Autumn Twilight a year away in 1984. So Larry Elmore was for sure deep into the character design process for the Dragonlance characters.

Written by Morris Simon, under the lady pseudonym of Madeleine Simon, to appeal to the young woman target audience of this gamebook, the story tells of a princess, Licia, determined to regain her kingdom and rescue her brother who has been kidnapped by the evil wizard Terg. On the way to completing her mission she will find two potential love interests, the brilliant and nice (but weirdly possessive) Max and the rude and uncouth thief Tym.

As the story goes on Licia gets the chance to romance one or both of these characters and there are some good lessons for young ladies here, such as: nice guys who are extremely controlling and possessive are really not nice and jealousy isn't a sign of love. The story is a bit too linear, and it doesn't make you go back and forth that much in the book, you basically keep going forward all the time until the end, which is a bit unimaginative and defeats the purpose of the book, but as a story it's still fun.

He kept repeating in Korean (hoping they would understand despite his horrid pronunciation), hands up in surrender. Seoul was a relatively safe place, every time he visited he never had a problem with the locals. In fact, he mostly visited the tourist populated sections of the country so to the locals, seeing a foreigner was not an uncommon sight. However, being a foreigner also meant having plenty of money and so-- Dimitri found himself in this uncomfortable situation of being mugged.

For God’s sake, don’t make me hurt you.

“ it’s because it’s lonely to be on my own so often that it’s better i don’t get attached , ” the MURMURED RESPONSE comes with mournful , guilty overtures . embarrassment ensconces his svelte frame in uncertainty . a glance through thick lashes gives away just how AWKWARD this conversation feels to the normally cheerful man . where did his SMILES & LAUGHTER go ? the wraith , the leech attached to his soul , answers his self - reflection with an eerie cackle ----- of course that’s why he speaks with such melancholy . the negativity wears on him , like a constant weight against his shoulders & sometimes , he finds himself unable to ignore it .

with this realization comes a halfhearted smile . the GUILT STILL CLINGS to him but he makes an effort to shake himself free of it . the effort becomes a physical event as he pinches his own cheek in the same way one might pinch themselves to see if they’re dreaming . the stretch of his lips becomes more genuine as the dull sheen leaves his eyes , “ ah , i’m sorry . SELF - PITY really isn’t a good look , is it ? i really appreciate you listening !! ”
